Remembering Ellis Nichols

is favorite saying was, “Don’t pray for a lighter load just pray for stronger shoulders that you might bear that load.” As we remember Ellis Nichols, longtime West Florida Electric board member, and reflect upon his life, it is clear that he embodied this philosophy. Sadly, Mr. Nichols died in November 2017. He was born in Clarksville, Florida, on April 6, 1944, the youngest child of Walter and Chrystelle Nichols. He lived a joyous life, filled with love and many accomplishments. He was a graduate of Blountstown High School, Chipola Junior College and Florida State University. As an adult, he became a pillar in the Carr-Clarksville community, serving in many different leadership capacities. He was a lifetime member of Poplar Head Baptist Church in Clarksville, Florida. Coach Nichols served as an educator and a football coach for the Blountstown Tigers for the better part of forty years, impacting the lives of countless individuals during his tenure at Blountstown High School, Blountstown Elementary School, and Carr School. During his coaching career, he helped coach three state championship football teams at Blountstown High School and another to runner-up in the state championship. He was appointed to serve on WFEC’s Board of Trustees in March 1997 to represent District 1. During his service on the board, he served in many capacities including as Past-President and Vice-President. He also represented WFEC on PowerSouth Energy Cooperative’s board in a variety of ways over the years including on their Executive Committee, Engineering & Operations Committee and the Marketing & Economic Development Committee. He also represented PowerSouth as the Florida Electric Cooperatives Association alternate voting delegate. continued page 4

A founding member of the Carr-Clarksville Volunteer Fire Department and an esteemed former president of the Woodmen of the World, Lodge 61, he also served on the Calhoun County Senior Citizens Board of Directors. Mr. Nichols was a culture bearer, carrying on important local traditions such as sucker fishing, hunting, and sawmilling. He left behind his wife of 36 years, Betty Nichols, sister Joyce Mauldin (C.W.), brother-in-law, Howard Johnson, and his children, Terry Nichols (Rosa), Sandy Willis (Rodney), Claudia Bennett (Shane), Bart Nichols, and Gina Miller (Will). He also leaves behind ten grandchildren, Annemarie Nichols, Caroline Nichols, Jordan Willis, Preston Nichols, Georgia Nichols, Drew Willis, Liam Miller, Charlie Nichols, Cane Miller, and Britt Newsome. Mr. Nichols was honored for 20 years of dedicated and loyal service to the West Florida Electric Cooperative Board of Trustees this past December. His son, Dr. Terry Nichols, accepted this award in his honor. “On behalf of our Board of Trustees and staff, words cannot express the void that was created by the loss of Mr. Nichols. We have twenty years of memories working with him as our representative for the Calhoun County members and all members of the Cooperative. He became a dear friend that we enjoyed while managing West Florida Electric’s challenges and accomplishments during his tenure. very year West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) has an annual meeting. One of the most important activities we conduct is the election for the board of directors. These are the nine people we entrust to give strategic direction and ensure the co-op has good governance. 34263001 In 1844 when the 28 Rochdale pioneers created the modern cooperative movement, they were insistent that all members have the right to vote. Unless we consistently remind ourselves about how precious this right to vote truly is we can easily take it for granted. At WFEC, we try to make it as convenient as possible for members to participate in the election by mail ballot. As the utility industry is experiencing some of the biggest changes since its founding, electric coops need your active participation. As a member of a co-op, you have the right (and some may even say the obligation) to help set the direction for the co-op. This is a critical difference between coJoe Rone, President, Board of Trustees ops and other electricity providers, such as investor-owned utilities (IOUs) or municipally-owned systems. With IOUs, you are a customer and there is no required ownership. IOU stockholders live far away and have no direct attachment to the organization other than seeking a return on their investment. Communities served by municipally-owned systems may vote for the mayor or city council, but the connection to the electric service is very indirect. The board of directors of a co-op makes important strategic decisions for Russell Dunaway, EVP & CEO the organization, while the operations (day-to-day running of the business) is entrusted to the Executive Vice President/CEO, management staff and employees. Examples of decisions boards make that impact all the members are: • the level of involvement in community economic development • utilization of renewable energy such as solar or wind generated power • offering value-added services that benefit the membership of the co-op • approving the budget for the co-op • wholesale power supply & purchased power continued page 6 ISSUE JANUARY 2018

So when the next election for the board comes around you may want to ask the candidates where they stand on these or other issues. As locallyowned businesses in the community, electric co-ops have the opportunity to introduce neighbors to neighbors and rekindle that spirit of democracy at the grassroots level. We can encourage respectful debate about the role we see our co-op playing in our community. 89286001 We know that democracy is not a perfect form of governing, it just happens to be better than any of the others. Maybe if we can practice doing it well at the local level, it will have a positive impact on our democracy as a whole.

Josh Rabon, a journeyman line worker, from the Sneads district, Rodney Bowers, a line crew leader, from the Bonifay district and Brandon Taylor, Associate Field Engineer, from the Graceville district were each honored with Outstanding Service Awards. ach year, West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) takes the opportunity to honor its employees with a Christmas party and award presentations. Our employees and their families enjoyed visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus and children wrote letters to Santa telling him what they wished for this Christmas during the event. Since this is the only time of year that our employees are all able to gather together in one room, the co-op uses this opportunity to present awards and recognize those individual employees who go above and beyond the call of duty. The awards presented during the event include service anniversary awards, outstanding service awards and of course, our employees of the year awards. 44580006 This year, Vivian Daniels, a cashiering coordinator in the Graceville district was named Administrative Employee of the Year by her peers at the event held December 5. Daniels was chosen to receive this award by her co-workers because she best exemplifies the following traits: personality, punctuality, safety habits, team work, flexibility and outstanding performance on the job. Her employment with WFEC began in 1998 working part-time at night as a member service representative and became full-time in 2013. She has a bachelor’s and master’s degree and retired after thirty-five plus years of professional work experience including teaching, counseling, and supervisory/managerial capacities for several different schools systems and agencies in several states. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling and spending time with her family. Her travel interest and enjoyment was sparked by her deceased spouse’s career in the military. She continues traveling with her daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter. Ms. Viv (as everyone at the co-op calls her) states that at this point in her life, it’s all about peace, experiences and giving. continued page 14

WFEC Celebrates 80 Years
W
est Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) celebrated its 80th birthday with events in each district office on Tuesday, December 12, 2017. The cooperative was founded by a group of visionary rural residents in Calhoun, Holmes, Jackson and Washington Counties in 1937 and its Articles of Incorporation were filed with the Florida Secretary of State’s office on December 11, 1937. The first meeting of incorporators and members of West Florida Electric Cooperative Association was held on December 21, 1937 in Marianna, Florida. At this meeting, applications for membership in the cooperative were approved and bylaws were adopted. A.J. Crutchfield was elected to serve as West Florida’s first Board of Trustees’ President; A.M. Andreason was elected Vice President; and W.R. Powell was tapped as Secretary/Treasurer. A.J. Crutchfield, A.L. Williams, W.R. Powell and L.F. Mathews were selected as solicitors to secure applications for membership and easements for right-ofway. These solicitors of membership were encouraged to secure 300 applications within the shortest amount of time possible through grassroots efforts. The next two years were very busy for the fledgling co-op, signing up new members and growing each day. 24323002 Membership in the cooperative was set at $5, which was a hardship for some, but they managed to find the money because they wanted electricity. The cooperative's membership fee remains five dollars today. In May 1938, Claude H. Smith became the cooperative’s first general manager and the cooperative’s first annual meeting was held on May 2, 1938. President A.J. Crutchfield, gave a report on the present state of the cooperative and outlined in general terms the plans for construction of electric distribution lines in Calhoun, Holmes and Jackson Counties. Washington County was also added to the first electrification project later that year. Members of WFEC present at the meeting agreed to borrow $100,000 to build the original 100 miles of line serving Calhoun, Holmes, Jackson and Washington Counties.
Now that the cooperative was signing up members and had a general manager, the next step was to begin building power lines to serve those members. In 1939, WFEC began hiring linemen and training them to build lines. Early line crews were often made up of unskilled workers and farmers and line work wasn't easy or glamourous. It was hard, backbreaking labor that didn't always go smoothly. But, linemen continued to work hard in adverse conditions to bring the American dream of electricity to rural America, and new farm families received lights each day. Some members of the new REA co-op in Calhoun, Holmes, Jackson and Washington Counties began receiving electricity in April of 1939. In addition to the cooperative’s loan to build power lines from REA, they also borrowed $10,000 so they could provide financing to members to have their homes wired and plumbed. The Board voted to allow members to finance up to $400 to have this done. The offices of West Florida Electric Cooperative were moved from Marianna to Graceville in 1939. This decision was made by the Board of Trustees since the work was centered in that area at the time. The move was to be temporary; however, WFEC’s offices are still located in Graceville today. 46091003 Today, the cooperative has grown to have around 29,000 meters in four counties and has approximately 4,600 miles of line throughout those counties. The cooperative serves approximately six members per mile of line throughout Calhoun, Holmes, Jackson and Washington Counties. In recognition of our 80 year history, each district office hosted birthday celebrations for cooperative & comunity members from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on December 12. Door prizes were given out to those who stopped in and an $80 bill credit was up for grabs for those who registered at each office. The winner of the $80 bill credit at the Graceville district office was Brenda Harmon. The Bonifay district office awarded an $80 bill credit to Ginger O’Brien and the winner in the Sneads district office was Robert Lisle.

Our employees and their families enjoyed visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus and children wrote letters to Santa telling him what they wished for this Christmas during the event. Since this is the only time of year that our employees are all able to gather together in one room, the co-op uses this opportunity to present awards and recognize those individual employees who go above and beyond the call of duty. The awards presented during the event include service anniversary awards, outstanding service awards and of course, our employees of the year awards. 44580006 This year, Vivian Daniels, a cashiering coordinator in the Graceville district was named Administrative Employee of the Year by her peers at the event held December 5. Daniels was chosen to receive this award by her co-workers because she best exemplifies the following traits: personality, punctuality, safety habits, team work, flexibility and outstanding performance on the job. Her employment with WFEC began in 1998 working part-time at night as a member service representative and became full-time in 2013. She has a bachelor’s and master’s degree and retired after thirty-five plus years of professional work experience including teaching, counseling, and supervisory/managerial capacities for several different schools systems and agencies in several states. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling and spending time with her family. Her travel interest and enjoyment was sparked by her deceased spouse’s career in the military. She continues traveling with her daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter. Ms. Viv (as everyone at the co-op calls her) states that at this point in her life, it’s all about peace, experiences and giving. continued page 14

very year West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) has an annual meeting. One of the most important activities we conduct is the election for the board of directors. These are the nine people we entrust to give strategic direction and ensure the co-op has good governance. 34263001 In 1844 when the 28 Rochdale pioneers created the modern cooperative movement, they were insistent that all members have the right to vote. Unless we consistently remind ourselves about how precious this right to vote truly is we can easily take it for granted. At WFEC, we try to make it as convenient as possible for members to participate in the election by mail ballot. As the utility industry is experiencing some of the biggest changes since its founding, electric coops need your active participation. As a member of a co-op, you have the right (and some may even say the obligation) to help set the direction for the co-op. This is a critical difference between coJoe Rone, President, Board of Trustees ops and other electricity providers, such as investor-owned utilities (IOUs) or municipally-owned systems. With IOUs, you are a customer and there is no required ownership. IOU stockholders live far away and have no direct attachment to the organization other than seeking a return on their investment. Communities served by municipally-owned systems may vote for the mayor or city council, but the connection to the electric service is very indirect. The board of directors of a co-op makes important strategic decisions for Russell Dunaway, EVP & CEO the organization, while the operations (day-to-day running of the business) is entrusted to the Executive Vice President/CEO, management staff and employees. A founding member of the Carr-Clarksville Volunteer Fire Department and an esteemed former president of the Woodmen of the World, Lodge 61, he also served on the Calhoun County Senior Citizens Board of Directors. Mr. Nichols was a culture bearer, carrying on important local traditions such as sucker fishing, hunting, and sawmilling. He left behind his wife of 36 years, Betty Nichols, sister Joyce Mauldin (C.W.), brother-in-law, Howard Johnson, and his children, Terry Nichols (Rosa), Sandy Willis (Rodney), Claudia Bennett (Shane), Bart Nichols, and Gina Miller (Will). He also leaves behind ten grandchildren, Annemarie Nichols, Caroline Nichols, Jordan Willis, Preston Nichols, Georgia Nichols, Drew Willis, Liam Miller, Charlie Nichols, Cane Miller, and Britt Newsome. Mr. Nichols was honored for 20 years of dedicated and loyal service to the West Florida Electric Cooperative Board of Trustees this past December. Remembering Ellis Nichols

is favorite saying was, “Don’t pray for a lighter load just pray for stronger shoulders that you might bear that load.” As we remember Ellis Nichols, longtime West Florida Electric board member, and reflect upon his life, it is clear that he embodied this philosophy. Sadly, Mr. Nichols died in November 2017. He was born in Clarksville, Florida, on April 6, 1944, the youngest child of Walter and Chrystelle Nichols. He lived a joyous life, filled with love and many accomplishments. He was a graduate of Blountstown High School, Chipola Junior College and Florida State University. As an adult, he became a pillar in the Carr-Clarksville community, serving in many different leadership capacities. He was a lifetime member of Poplar Head Baptist Church in Clarksville, Florida. Coach Nichols served as an educator and a football coach for the Blountstown Tigers for the better part of forty years, impacting the lives of countless individuals during his tenure at Blountstown High School, Blountstown Elementary School, and Carr School. During his coaching career, he helped coach three state championship football teams at Blountstown High School and another to runner-up in the state championship. He was appointed to serve on WFEC’s Board of Trustees in March 1997 to represent District 1. During his service on the board, he served in many capacities including as Past-President and Vice-President. He also represented WFEC on PowerSouth Energy Cooperative’s board in a variety of ways over the years including on their Executive Committee, Engineering & Operations Committee and the Marketing & Economic Development Committee. He also represented PowerSouth as the Florida Electric Cooperatives Association alternate voting delegate. continued page 4
