Board of Trustee Nominations Due Feb. 25

n accordance with Article IV, Section 5, of West Florida Electric Cooperative’s bylaws, WFEC has appointed a nominating committee to identify interested and qualified members to be candidates for the board of trustees in the co-op’s upcoming elections. WFEC’s members will elect trustees to represent the following districts: District 4: That part of Jackson County lying west of Marshall Creek, west of the Chipola River, north of U.S. Highway 90 and east of Holmes Creek. District 5: That part of Jackson County south of U.S. Highway 90 and west of the Chipola River. District 6: That part of Washington County served by the cooperative. To be eligible to serve as a trustee, a person must be a bonafide WFEC member residing in the respective district and meet certain other requirements set forth in WFEC’s bylaws. Desired qualifications include the ability to become bonded, the capability of receiving and sending electronic mail transmissions and successfully meeting all requirements to become a National Rural Electric Cooperative Association Credentialed Cooperative Director within 36 months. All candidates must agree to abide by Board Policy No. 126: Board Election Campaign Policy. Any WFEC member living in Districts 4, 5 or 6 and interested in running should contact a committee member in the appropriate district. All completed documents must be mailed or delivered to the Graceville office and submitted to Susie Johnson or her designee by noon on February 25. Stopping Scams for Better Service Consumers urged to help fight fraud

ur increasingly connected world is giving scammers more opportunities to connect with unsuspecting consumers, and local authorities, utilities and other businesses are working to keep people informed. They suggest that ‘if you see something, say something,’ is a vigilance adage that can help prevent you, your family or your business from being victimized. “The Federal Trade Commission has been hearing about scammers impersonating utility companies in an effort to get your money,” said Lisa Lake, a federal consumer education specialist. “Your reports help us fight these scams.” Electric cooperatives are among the businesses and consumer organizations supporting Utilities United Against Scams (UUAS). The international consortium of electricity, natural gas, water and sewer providers, and trade and industry associations is sharing information on payment scams, identity theft, sales and service schemes.

Imposter scams are the most common type of fraud reported to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), according to UUAS officials. Impersonators call homes and small businesses demanding payment for supposedly delinquent bills and threatening to terminate service. The frequency of the incidents picks up during peak heating and cooling seasons, in part because consumers are most concerned when temperature extremes increase the urgency of maintaining utility service. Variations on the scam are also becoming more common. Rather than making an initial claim that a consumer owes an outstanding balance, some scammers are now claiming an overpayment is the reason for a telephone call to a consumer. They will make contact in

• Co-op employees will never show up at your door to demand payment. • Never give personal information to an unknown caller or visitor. Co-op representatives have access to the details they need to service your account. • Demands for immediate payment by wire transfer, cryptocurrency, gift cards or cash reload cards should immediately raise red flags. • If you think you've been contacted by a scammer falsely representing the co-op, please let us know as soon as possible.

They may try to charge you for the phony service, sell you unnecessary products, collect personal information for use in identity theft or gain entry to steal valuables. Directions: For filling, stir flour into hamburger & onion mixture, cook 1 minute. Add remaining ingredients & cook on low heat 20-30 minutes until vegetables are done, stirring often. For topping, cover potatoes with water, bring to a boil, salt, reduce heat & cook until tender. Drain water from potatoes & mash. Add sour cream, cheese, milk & margarine. Mash to desired consistency. Spoon meat mixture into baking dish, cover with mashed potatoes, top with another 1/4 cup cheese & bake 20 minutes at 375 degrees.
