1.1 Million Comments Submitted to EPA - But What’s Next?

ecember 1 was the last day for the public to submit comments to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on their proposed GHG regulations targeting new and existing power plants. The EPA’s original deadline was set for October 16, but was extended by 45 days after many federal and state officials pushed for more time to comment. After learning more about the proposal and what it would mean for their electric bills, more than 1.1 million people took the time and energy to submit comments to EPA through www.action.coop and www.tellEPA. com. Nearly 1,000 West Florida Electric members submitted comments to the EPA. We sincerely thank you for your efforts to help us encourage the EPA to work with electric co-ops for a common sense solution to our energy future. Impacts of the EPA’s new regulations include higher electric bills for those who can least afford it – in some cases an increase of 30 percent, detrimental impacts on reliable operation of the bulk electric system and negative impacts on economic activity, causing job losses. Now that the comment period has ended, what happens next? The EPA plans to finalize their proposal and issue a rule in June 2015. Between now and then, EPA will review the comments they received and host meetings with stakeholders including co-ops. Throughout this period, numerous congressional hearings will also take place on both sides of the Hill. Because of the way that the EPA crafted their proposal, states are responsible for developing their own plans to comply so some of the spotlight will shift to the states. Most state legislatures will consider resolutions that will influence how their state deals with the EPA proposal. But that doesn’t mean the battle has left Washington, D.C.

WFEC Employees Collect Toys for Local Organization

est Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) employees collected toys for the Guardian Ad Litem program at their annual Christmas Party and Awards Banquet held on Dec. 11, 2014. Employees collected nearly 70 toys for the organization to utilize throughout the year in Holmes, Jackson, Washington and Calhoun counties. The toys are used at birthday parties, adoption events, and for volunteers to bring when meeting their children for the first time to help break the ice. Staying Geared Up for Safety

an you imagine working a job that requires you to lift heavy equipment and perform detailed tasks near deadly high voltage? Now imagine doing this 40 feet in the air, and sometimes, in extreme weather. This is the life of a lineman. These brave men answer when called – and they do so to ensure that you are provided with safe, reliable electric service. But how do they stay safe when working in dangerous conditions? West Florida Electric Cooperative’s (WFEC’s) linemen are required to wear personal protective equipment at all times while on the job to keep them safe. While our linemen do everything possible to prevent them, unexpected fires can happen, so they wear fire resistant clothing every day. Linemen also must wear insulated rubber gloves when working on any type of electrical line. These gloves provide protection against electrical shock and burn and are tested at 30,000 volts. Protective gloves, usually made of leather, are worn over insulated gloves to protect the rubber from punctures and cuts. Our linemen also wear hard hats – insulated hard hats are worn at all times to protect them from blows and falling objects. Steel toe boots and safety goggles are also a must for our linemen. While working on electrical lines, they may also be required to wear equipment belts, tool pouches, safety straps, harnesses and other types of equipment. A linemen’s gear usually weighs about 50 pounds – that’s a lot of extra weight! While our linemen are always very cognizant of the fact that they’re working in hazardous conditions, sometimes our members forget or don’t know what they need to do to stay safe around electricity. Here are a few things you might not know or just haven’t considered that could be a problem or safety hazard: • Leave the pole alone – placing a sign on a utility pole could endanger a life. It may seem innocent, but a small nail partially driven into a pole can have deadly results around high-voltage electricity. Our co-op’s line crews climb utility poles at all hours of the day and night and often, in terrible weather conditions. Anything attached to utility poles can create serious hazards for our line personnel. Sharp objects like nails, tacks, staples or barbed wire can puncture rubber gloves and other safety equipment, making linemen vulnerable to electrocution. • Don’t build structures on utility poles or near power lines. Our lineworkers have reported seeing satellite mounts, support legs for deer stands, lights and carports on or too close to utility poles. Not only do these attachments put line crews at risk, anyone illegally placing these items on poles comes dangerously close to energized power lines with thousands of volts of energy pulsing overhead. It’s always wise to keep any structure at least 10 feet away from utility poles. • Stay far away from downed power lines. If you see a downed power line, move at least 10 feet away from the line and anything touching it. The proper way to move away from a line is to shuffle away with small steps, keeping your feet together and on the ground at all times. This will minimize the potential for strong electric shock. • Never attempt to move a downed power line. Do not attempt to move a downed power line or anything in contact with the line by using another object such as a broom or stick. Even non-conductive materials like wood or cloth, if slightly wet, can conduct electricity. • Stay in your car if a power line falls on it. If you are in your car and it comes into contact with a downed line during a car accident, stay in your car and tell others to stay away from your vehicle. If you must leave your car because it’s on fire, jump out of the vehicle with both feet together and avoid contact with the car and the ground at the same time. Follow the method mentioned above by shuffling away with small steps, keeping your feet together and on the ground at all times.
