Tis the Season - to Celebrate Safely!

o help make sure your holidays don’t go from merry to scary, remember these holiday safety tips: 25652002

• Keep decorations at least three feet away from heat sources – especially those with an open flame, like fireplaces and candles. And, remember to blow out candles when leaving the room or going to sleep. • Remember, the best decorations are safe decorations. When decorating, make sure not to run cords under rugs or furniture, out of windows, or across walkways and sidewalks. • Never connect more than three strings of incandescent lights together. • Exercise caution when decorating near power lines. Keep yourself and your equipment at least ten feet from power lines. • Inspect decorations and discard any that are damaged or worn out. • Have a natural Christmas tree? Water it to keep it fresh and safe. Real trees can dry up and turn into kindling in no time at all. Get rid of the tree after Christmas. Dried out trees are a fire hazard and should not be left in homes or garages. • Always turn off decorations when leaving home and when sleeping. Most deadly fires happen while people are asleep. • Be mindful of how you are using electrical outlets. When using extension cords or adapters that add receptacles, consider having a qualified electrician add more outlets to your home. Extension cords are a common cause of home fires. Avoid overloading electrical outlets with too many decorations or electrical devices. They can overheat and cause a fire. • Only use electronics in dry areas. As tempting as it is, you just can’t decorate your aquarium with icicle lights. • Remember that phones and tablets should stay on nightstands. We all love falling asleep to the muffled crooning of Bing Crosby and Michael Bublé singing our holiday favorites, but overheated electronics under pillows and blankets are dangerous. • If you’re using a space heater, switch it off before leaving the room. It only takes seconds for a fire to start if a space heater tips over or comes in contact with something combustible, like a blanket or curtains. • Consider upgrading to Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupter breakers or outlets in your home. It is estimated that half of the electrical fires that occur every year could be prevented by AFCIs. All electrical upgrades should be completed by a qualified electrician. Consider implementing these holiday safety tips to keep your holidays merry, safe, and bright.

When decorating outside with lights and other holiday decor, make sure to keep all ladders and equipment at least ten feet away from all power lines.

Prevent a Turkey Fryer Fire When you fry foods, you can increase the risk of a cooking fire.

• Turkey fryers can easily tip over spilling hot oil across a large area. Use your fryer only outdoors on a sturdy, level surface well away from things that can burn. Make sure to have a "3-foot kid - and pet-free zone" around your fryer to protect against burn injuries. • An overfilled cooking pot will cause oil to spill over when the turkey is placed inside. Determine the correct amount of oil needed by first placing the turkey in the pot with water. • A partially frozen turkey will cause hot oil to splatter. Make sure your turkey is completely thawd before you fry it. • Turkey fryers can easily overheat and start a fire. Check the temperature often with a cooking thermometer so the oil won't overheat.

The final and most involved step is filling cracks and holes in walls and around windows and doors with caulk, filler and/or expanding foam. 5. Floors Cold floors can be costly and uncomfortable. The easiest solution is to lay down area rugs for additional warmth. But to really make the floor comfortable, you may have to venture into the crawlspace and insulate the floor or skirting. If you’re not sure how to do this, there are several video tutorials available online. 6. Roof Insulation We all know that hot air travels in only one direction – up. So imagine running your heater full blast only for most of the warm air to escape through an un-insulated roof. Most mobile home roofs are poorly insulated. There is usually a cavity between the roof and ceiling that is left completely empty with only an inch or so of fiberglass insulation running under the roof. Seamed metal roofs are particularly vulnerable. Having a professional install additional insulation in the roof of your home may be worth any added expenses you might incur. With these simple steps, you can look forward to a cozier and less-costly winter!

Tighten the Belt on Power Bills

id you know that trimming your heating and cooling costs is one of the quickest ways to manage electric bills? That’s because this expense accounts for nearly half of your household energy costs. When you keep your heating and cooling (HVAC) system in shape and set it for maximum efficiency, you’ll enjoy comfort and energy savings. As your savings connection, we’re providing tips to help you do just that! Set your thermostat to savings: To begin, set your thermostat as high as comfortable during summer and as cool as comfortable during winter. You can save up to 10 percent on your annual heating and cooling bills by adjusting your thermostat 7° to 10°F for 8 hours each day from its normal setting. The recommended winter setting is 68°F during the day and cooler at night while everyone is sleeping. In summer, try a daytime temperature setting of 78°F or as high as comfortably possible. Do-it-yourself maintenance: To help your HVAC system operate at maximum efficiency, first clear vegetation, fallen leaves and any

obstructions that are closer than two feet from around the outdoor compressor unit. This gives the unit the unrestricted airflow it needs. Also, change those air filters inside your home regularly. Your system works harder to keep your home comfortable when filters are clogged. Plan ahead for system tune ups: Don’t risk having to call a professional because your system goes out on a scorching summer day or the dead of winter. Schedule regular maintenance — at least once a year — to ensure your unit works efficiently when you need it most.

During a service call, the technician can clear the drain of any clogs, and get rid of buildup on the indoor evaporator coil. This wise investment will save energy and money, keeping your system in shape longer. Upgrade when it’s time: If your system needs repairs on a regular basis or is more than 10 years old, replacing it can result in big savings. Today’s high-efficiency heat pumps reduce energy use by about 50 percent compared to older models. Heat pumps also keep a constant and comfortable temperature throughout your home — something you don’t get with an electric furnace. That’s because heat pumps move heat instead of generating it. As an added benefit, they also dehumidify the air inside your home, using less energy to cool your home during the summer. WFEC offers rebates on highefficiency dual-fuel or mini-split heat pumps, as well as incentives that help manufactured homeowners upgrade from an electric furnace to a high-efficiency heat pump.
