he holidays are a time of year that many of us eagerly anticipate. The season is marked by special foods, seasonal decorations and lots of festivities. We cherish carrying on old family traditions and enjoy creating new ones. For me personally, I look forward to more time spent with family and friends. However, given the hustle Ty Peel, EVP & CEO and bustle of the season, the holidays can also offer an opportunity to slow down and reflect. For all of us at West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC), we are grateful for you, the members of the co-op. You see, one of our founding principles as a co-op is “Concern for Community.” While our main focus is providing safe, reliable and affordable energy, we want to give back. We want to help our community thrive. Reflection In looking back at this past year, I’m grateful that we were able to make a positive impact in the communities we serve. We continue working closely with our local high schools to award college scholarships. In 2019, we awarded 4 scholarships to local students attending Chipola College. The cooperative also awarded several local teachers with scholarships to attend the Empower Education Workshop this past June. All the attendees received the tools and curriculum necessary to integrate activiISSUE DECEMBER 2019
ties about electric generation and distribution with a focus on energy education into their classrooms. These resources meet students' diverse needs and learning styles. The Empower Energy Education Workshop is a part of an initiative to promote a balanced approach to energy education in the classroom. As a cooperative, providing education and learning opportunities to our members is one of our founding principles. It's very important for us to invest in our community's teachers because they are investing in the future of our country by educating our children. As our industry continues changing due to innovations in technology, it is imperative to ensure our educators have the information and materials needed to inform future generations about the types of energy available, where it comes from, how it is generated and how it impacts our economy, their families and quality of life. As Executive Vice President & CEO of WFEC, I am proud to have this opportunity to partner with other cooperatives to provide this opportunity to educators from our local schools. Looking Ahead As we prepare for next year, we look forward to the opportunity to continue serving you, our members, and the greater community. Our commitment is to never lose sight of our primary focus of providing safe, reliable and cost effective electricity. We will also continue to look for more efficient and innovative ways to fulfill these commitments. BEAT THE PEAK energy saver You can help “beat the peak” by being mindful of not only how you use electricity but also when you use it. Peaks occur when the demand for electricity is at its highest—on cold mornings and hot afternoons—when everybody on our system uses more energy in their homes. Help us “beat the peak” by limiting energy usage in your home from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the summer and 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. in the winter. During these hours, adjust your thermostat for maximum energy efficiency, avoid washing or drying clothes, delay baths to conserve hot water, and run the dishwasher later.

When reporting a problem, please provide the information listed below, so that we can make the repair and contact you if necessary. • Provide the member account number or meter number, just like when reporting a power outage. Some members have multiple yard lights – in this case, members will be asked where the light is located on the property. • Describe the nature of the problem; such as light is blinking, bulb is burned out, etc. • Provide contact information such as the name, address, email address, or phone number of the person reporting the outdoor light so that they can be contacted if needed. Providing as much information as possible will help ensure the proper response to your request. We certainly appreciate your help in this matter. Decorate Safely This Holiday Season

he holiday season offers great moments for building memories, but when it comes to decorating, it’s also the perfect time to think about safety. “There are about 200 decorating-related injuries each day during the busy holiday season,” said Ann Marie Buerkle, acting chairman of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). “Make safety a part of your family’s holiday decorating this year.” Between November 2016 and January 2017, holiday decorating injuries resulted in 18,400 emergency room visits, nationwide. Local fire departments look to the holiday season as a time of increased vigilance, often tied to many of the activities that have become family traditions. “It’s important to use common sense when you’re dealing with holiday decorating, particularly with lighting, candles and electrical wiring,” said Bruce Bouch, a U.S. Fire Administration fire program specialist. “Holiday decorations are designed for temporary use, and that means they are essentially disposable.”
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the top three days of the year for candle fires in the U.S. are Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. NFPA statistics also indicate that one of four Christmas tree fires are caused by electrical problems. The global safety certification company, United Laboratories, classifies holiday lighting as a seasonal product designed for no more than 90 days of use. While the actual holiday season runs about six weeks, weather and busy schedules mean outdoor holiday lighting displays are put up early and taken down late, exposed to the elements the entire time. “It’s always important to inspect holiday lights each year before you

Grandma Hutchison's Low Fat Fruit Cake Ingredients: 1 cup dates, cut up 1 cup Brazil nuts 1 cup walnuts 1 cup pecans 1 jar 10.5-12.5 oz. cherries, cut up (save the juice) 4 eggs, beaten well 11/2 cup sugar 2 scant cups of all-purpose flour 1 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. salt Directions:
Combine all ingredients. Be sure to add the cherry juice to the batter. No need to cut up the nuts; they will slice nicely with bread. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour or so. The batter will be enough for three 1 lb. coffee cans. (You can tell this is a very old recipe). The modern version will make 5 aluminum loaf pans (size 523/32 x 35/16 x 17/8). *Bakers note: This is a small, but amazing gift at Christmas! Everyone who gets a loaf always wants my grandma's recipe. Grandma Hattie made many folks happy over the years. I like that the recipe is very easy to make!

It’s because of this that we like to remind you how important it is to stay away from downed power lines, caution you about the use of portable generators, and ask you to move over on the roadways when you see utility workers. Severe weather is the most common reason for downed power lines, but they can also be caused by auto accidents or other incidents. What should you do if you come across a fallen power line? If you have a downed power line on your property as a result of a falling tree, storm or other circumstance, do not go near it. The number one rule you should follow when you see a downed power line is always assume it is energized. Stay away and stay alive. Coming into contact with an energized line can lead to death or severe injury. When moving away from a downed power line, shuffle your feet close together and maintain contact with the ground. Electricity travels through the ground in all directions after the line falls. Voltage decreases the further away you are from the line. If you run or take large steps, you could conduct electricity from one leg at one voltage to another leg at
another voltage, which increases the chance of injury or death. Shuffling is the safest method for “retreating” from a downed power line. Accidents or other incidents may cause power lines to fall on vehicles or farm equipment. If your car or farm equipment becomes entangled with a power line, the vehicle may become charged with electricity. Anyone exiting the vehicle could come into contact with thousands of volts of electricity from the line. When stepping out of the vehicle, you become part of the electricity’s path. It’s critical to stay inside the vehicle until emergency crews have told you it’s safe to exit the vehicle. If the vehicle is on fire or you must exit for other safety reasons, jump

Keep it watered: Fill the water reservoir daily and check the condition of the trunk bark and branches for moisture. Shedding or dry needles could mean the tree is drying out, increasing overall fire risks.

put them up,” said Bouch. “You may find that there are pinches or torn areas on the insulation.” Open, exposed wiring or any signs of fraying or pinching are indications of weakened wiring. Those flaws are prone to breakage and may raise the potential for heat buildup, which can cause a fire. Bouch recommends a thorough inspection of your holiday lights to identify potential hotspots and damage to the strings. “When you’re checking everything on the wiring and fixtures, make sure you check for chewing damage from wild animals or your own pets,” adds Bouch. “Also look for signs that the insulation itself is wearing thin enough to expose wiring.” The U.S. Fire Administration, the CPSC and non-government safety organizations are also focused on reminding consumers that extension cords, whether labeled for indoors or outdoors, are also designed for temporary use. “Your household wiring is a solid metal wire,” said Bouch. “Extension cords are strands of thin wires that are twisted together. That pliability can allow them to break over time, increasing the chance that they could fail within so many years.” Experts also warn that candle use increases the risk of accidental fires, and suggests that consumers consider battery-operated LED candles as safer alternatives. According to NFPA, candles start two out of every five home fires each year, and about 100 Christmas tree fires occur each holiday season, causing about $12 million in damage annually. You can reduce the risks by placing your Christmas tree away from heat sources, like vents or space heaters, and topping off the water reservoir daily. Florida’s electric cooperatives join our local firefighters, the NFPA and the CPSC in urging you to consider safety as you decorate and enjoy the holiday season with family and friends.

umerous yard lights were damaged during Hurricane Michael. If you have or see an outdoor light that is not working on WFEC’s system, please contact the cooperative to report it. When reporting a problem, please provide the information listed below, so that we can make the repair and contact you if necessary. • Provide the member account number or meter number, just like when reporting a power outage. Some members have multiple yard lights – in this case, members will be asked where the light is located on the property. • Describe the nature of the problem; such as light is blinking, bulb is burned out, etc. • Provide contact information such as the name, address, email address, or phone number of the person reporting the outdoor light so that they can be contacted if needed. Providing as much information as possible will help ensure the proper response to your request. We certainly appreciate your help in this matter. To report a broken or malfunctioning outdoor light, contact WFEC at 800-342-7400 or call your local district office during normal business hours. he holidays are a time of year that many of us eagerly anticipate. The season is marked by special foods, seasonal decorations and lots of festivities. We cherish carrying on old family traditions and enjoy creating new ones. For me personally, I look forward to more time spent with family and friends. For all of us at West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC), we are grateful for you, the members of the co-op. You see, one of our founding principles as a co-op is “Concern for Community.” While our main focus is providing safe, reliable and affordable energy, we want to give back. We want to help our community thrive. Reflection In looking back at this past year, I’m grateful that we were able to make a positive impact in the communities we serve. We continue working closely with our local high schools to award college scholarships. In 2019, we awarded 4 scholarships to local students attending Chipola College. The cooperative also awarded several local teachers with scholarships to attend the Empower Education Workshop this past June. ties about electric generation and distribution with a focus on energy education into their classrooms. These resources meet students' diverse needs and learning styles. The Empower Energy Education Workshop is a part of an initiative to promote a balanced approach to energy education in the classroom. As a cooperative, providing education and learning opportunities to our members is one of our founding principles. It's very important for us to invest in our community's teachers because they are investing in the future of our country by educating our children. As our industry continues changing due to innovations in technology, it is imperative to ensure our educators have the information and materials needed to inform future generations about the types of energy available, where it comes from, how it is generated and how it impacts our economy, their families and quality of life. As Executive Vice President & CEO of WFEC, I am proud to have this opportunity to partner with other cooperatives to provide this opportunity to educators from our local schools. Looking Ahead As we prepare for next year, we look forward to the opportunity to continue serving you, our members, and the greater community.
