Tips for a Safe Happy Holiday Season

“Birds in the Park” Saturday, December 5; 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Dianna Sue Bryant, a volunteer of “Sacred Earth Wildlife Refuge” will be on hand to exhibit and talk about the birds that she rehabilitates. Barred owls, red-shouldered hawks, Eastern screech owls, and great horned owls are the usual participants of this event. Dianna is one of only a handful of rehabilitators in the panhandle who are licensed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service to work with hawks, owls, songbirds, squirrels, opossums, raccoons and several other species that have been hurt or injured. The birds that Dianna will bring to the program are ones that, because of the extent of their injuries are not able to be released back into the wild and are kept through a special permit.The program is included in the park admission of $5 for a carload of up to 8 people. Extension cords are temporary When you asked your teacher for an extension on your term paper, it was a one-time thing, right? The same holds true for extension cords. They are designed for temporary use and should never be used as a permanent or long-term solution. 60576002 Never tamper with safety devices There are reasons why some devices have fuses, some plugs have three prongs instead of two and one prong is wider than the other on two-prong outlets. When those safety features get in the way of your grand holiday décor plans, you might be tempted to tamper with those features. Don’t do it! You should treat this line the same way you’d treat any other power line on our system. Community Calendar Christmas Celebration Saturday, December 5; 5:00 p.m. Panhandle Pioneer Settlement Old Fashioned Christmas Celebration will take place immediately after the Blountstown Christmas parade. Don’t forget about the kids…and pets If you have small children, you’ve probably spent a great deal of time making sure every square inch of your home is childproof. Mailing Delays Could Impact Your Utility Home/Farm (cont.) Payment

ince early 2015, West Florida Electric Cooperative employees have noticed a significant increase in the number of days it takes our members to receive bills as well as the time it takes for the cooperative to receive payment once those bills are mailed. The cooperative has also received several complaints from members regarding these delays. In many cases, bills are not being received by members until their due dates. We’ve also noticed that payments received in our offices are postmarked several days prior to receiving them. The cooperative has always accepted payments based on the date the payment was postmarked in an effort to prevent our members from incurring a late fee. In an effort to continue providing quality, customer service, this practice has not changed. Around 27 percent of the cooperative’s electric bill payments are received by mail, so these delays are a big issue. WFEC contacted neighboring utility companies to see if they were having similar problems and discovered that they are. The cooperative has also conducted research and discovered major changes within the U.S. Postal Service at the time we began having these problems. WFEC made contact with the postal service to see what can be done to rectify the issues and the U.S. Postal Service is currently researching the matter and conducting a test mailing to see if a solution can be found. “West Florida Electric reminds our members that these delays not only impact electric bills, but all mail you send and receive. Keep an eye on your mail’s post-marked dates and see if you’re experiencing extended delays. One tool the cooperative has at hand is its live electrical safety demonstration or “Safety City” demo. This educational program can be conducted for school aged children or tailored to an adult audience. Presenters will provide information on the background of electric cooperatives, and conduct hands-on activities with students providing explanations about all the equipment used by linemen and service men to keep them safe while working. Children will also learn steps to take to stay safe around electricity and what can happen when poor safety habits are followed.
