Local Teachers Get an Energy CLASSIFIEDS FOR SALE Education

early 300 teachers became the students from across Alabama and northwest Florida at an energy education workshop co-hosted by West Florida Electric Cooperative in June. There were forty-four teachers in attendance from WFEC’s four-county service area. “First class! Hands down the most impressive workshop ever,” said Shawna Ferguson, a teacher at Graceville High School. Ferguson has been teaching grades 6-12 for 11 years at various schools within WFEC’s service area. The first Empower Energy Education Workshop was an engaging, handson energy exploration workshop to equip educators to present a balanced approach to electric generation and distribution – with fun, up-to-date resources and curriculum. The curriculum was developed by the National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project. “Typical workshops hurry through, lots of information with no time to practice or try what you are learning. That was not the case with Empower - they truly lived up to their name. Every teacher left empowered with the sizeable science kit and resources needed to teach students of all ages,” said Ferguson. NEED equips today’s teachers, students and future leaders with knowledge and work skills, they train teachers to teach energy from a balanced perspective and promote an energy conscious and educated society by creating networks of educators, students, business, government and community leaders. They have designed an objective, multi-sided energy education program used in more than 65,000 classrooms nationwide. These resources meet students’ diverse needs and learning styles and are correlated to the National Science Education Content Standards, as well as state standards.

Alford Appointed to Board of Trustees

our West Florida Board of Trustees has appointed Tim Alford, of Grand Ridge, to fill the District 2 Board of Trustees seat left vacant by the passing of long-time trustee, Mr. Eugene Alford. Tim Alford has been a West Florida Electric member, living in District 2, for 34 years. Mr. Alford retired from the Florida Department of Corrections at the rank of Colonel, after a 31year career with them. As Colonel, he reported to the warden and he personally supervised in excess of 500 employees Tim Alford, District 2 Trustee and was responsible for community relations. He taught Criminal Justice at Gulf Coast State College, participated in over 670 advanced training hours, was awarded several distinguished awards, outstanding service and dedicated service awards and obtained a wide range of instructor certifications. Mr. Alford is a self-employed, row crop farmer. He grows soybeans, cotton, peanuts, corn and watermelons and maintains a family garden, sharing the fruits of his labors graciously. He was born and raised in Jackson County and is a lifelong member of Shady Grove Methodist. Mr. Alford attended both Chipola College in Marianna and Florida Gateway College in Lake City. Tim has two children, Timothy Alford and Trudie Alford, and two grandchildren. He is also an active member of the Florida Peanut Producer Association. In his spare time, he enjoys fishing, gardening and hunting. Mr. Alford says one of his goals is to serve all the members and employees of the cooperative with loyalty and integrity and he wants our members to know that he is grateful for the opportunity. 22678001 The board and management staff are looking forward to working with Mr. Alford. Recently, I was given the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. for the annual Youth Tour. From the moment our plane landed, I knew that within a few days, my life would be forever impacted. The memories made along the way are memories that I will forever hold close. I would like to take the chance to thank West Florida Electric and Florida Electric Cooperatives Association for everything they did for me and for allowing me to have had the chance to go on this life changing trip,” said Drew Willis. 85830001 The Youth Tour program is open to all high school juniors whose parents or guardians are members of West Florida Electric Cooperative. Each high school within WFEC’s service area selects a representative for the State Youth Tour in the fall of each year. The selected representatives then go on to compete for the two slots available for the National Youth Tour. The Youth Tour program is also a scholarship opportunity for area students. One $4,000 scholarship to Chipola College is awarded to a participant from each county served by WFEC. "The Washington, D.C. Youth Tour was the experience of a lifetime. It was amazing to see the Capitol, the White House, Mount Vernon, museums and countless other landmarks in person. This tour brought a greater clarity to my educational goals and what I will aspire to be one day,” said Korbin Haller.

ofia Coley of Blountstown and Korbin Haller of Graceville were among nearly 1,700 high school students from 43 states who participated in the National Rural Electric Cooperative Youth Tour held June 10-15, 2017, in Washington, D.C. Coley and Haller were sponsored by West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) and represented Blountstown High School (Coley) and Graceville High School (Haller). Drew Willis, Blountstown High School, also participated in the trip as a representative of the Florida Rural Electric Cooperatives Association. Willis is the grandson of WFEC Trustee, Ellis Nichols, and he competed in a separate essay competition held solely for the children and grandchildren of WFEC employees and board members. The winner of this essay competition is selected as the Youth Tour representative for the Florida Rural Electric Cooperatives Association. “Before being chosen to participate in the Youth Tour, I had never heard of the program before. I knew from the start that it was a great opportunity, but I didn’t know the full extent of what I would be a part of. During the weeks leading up to Youth Tour, in casual conversation, I realized several people I knew had been on the tour. Coley and Haller were sponsored by West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) and represented Blountstown High School (Coley) and Graceville High School (Haller). Drew Willis, Blountstown High School, also participated in the trip as a representative of the Florida Rural Electric Cooperatives Association. Willis is the grandson of WFEC Trustee, Ellis Nichols, and he competed in a separate essay competition held solely for the children and grandchildren of WFEC employees and board members. The winner of this essay competition is selected as the Youth Tour representative for the Florida Rural Electric Cooperatives Association. “Before being chosen to participate in the Youth Tour, I had never heard of the program before. I knew from the start that it was a great opportunity, but I didn’t know the full extent of what I would be a part of. During the weeks leading up to Youth Tour, in casual conversation, I realized several people I knew had been on the tour. Each high school within WFEC’s service area selects a representative for the State Youth Tour in the fall of each year. One $4,000 scholarship to Chipola College is awarded to a participant from each county served by WFEC. "The Washington, D.C. Youth Tour was the experience of a lifetime. He was born and raised in Jackson County and is a lifelong member of Shady Grove Methodist. Mr. Alford attended both Chipola College in Marianna and Florida Gateway College in Lake City. Tim has two children, Timothy Alford and Trudie Alford, and two grandchildren. He is also an active member of the Florida Peanut Producer Association. In his spare time, he enjoys fishing, gardening and hunting. Local Teachers Get an Energy CLASSIFIEDS FOR SALE Education

early 300 teachers became the students from across Alabama and northwest Florida at an energy education workshop co-hosted by West Florida Electric Cooperative in June. There were forty-four teachers in attendance from WFEC’s four-county service area. “First class! Hands down the most impressive workshop ever,” said Shawna Ferguson, a teacher at Graceville High School. Ferguson has been teaching grades 6-12 for 11 years at various schools within WFEC’s service area. The first Empower Energy Education Workshop was an engaging, handson energy exploration workshop to equip educators to present a balanced approach to electric generation and distribution – with fun, up-to-date resources and curriculum. The curriculum was developed by the National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project. “Typical workshops hurry through, lots of information with no time to practice or try what you are learning. That was not the case with Empower - they truly lived up to their name. Every teacher left empowered with the sizeable science kit and resources needed to teach students of all ages,” said Ferguson. NEED equips today’s teachers, students and future leaders with knowledge and work skills, they train teachers to teach energy from a balanced perspective and promote an energy conscious and educated society by creating networks of educators, students, business, government and community leaders. They have designed an objective, multi-sided energy education program used in more than 65,000 classrooms nationwide. These resources meet students’ diverse needs and learning styles and are correlated to the National Science Education Content Standards, as well as state standards.
