oee Warren of Alford and Brittany Benton of Grand Ridge were among nearly 1,700 high school students from 43 states who participated in the National Rural Electric Cooperative Youth Tour held June 13-18, 2015, in Washington, D.C. Warren and Benton were sponsored by West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) and represented Cottondale High School (Warren) and Sneads High School (Benton). While in Washington, the students learned first-hand what it is like to be involved in politics, how our government operates and about how and why electric co-ops were formed. One highlight of the trip included meeting their elected representatives in the U.S. House and Senate. They toured Arlington National Cemetery, the Capitol, and Mount Vernon. Students also visited various monuments and memorials including the Viet Nam, Jefferson, Lincoln, Roosevelt and more. While in D.C., they also enjoyed the U.S. Marine Corps Band Sunset Parade; a boat cruise and dance on the Potomac River; and ended their trip by seeing “Newsies” at the Kennedy Center. In 1964, the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) began coordinating joint WFEC Youth Tour representatives, Brittany Benton (left) & Zoee activities among Warren (right). state delegations and suggested that co-op representatives from each state arrange to be in Washington, D.C. during Youth Tour week. The first year of the coordinated tour included about 400 teens from 12 states. As word spread, the program grew – and grew and grew to what it is today. WFEC has participated in the Youth Tour program since 1979, sending two students to our nation’s capital each year since. 96938002 The Youth Tour program is open to all high school juniors whose parents or guardians are members of West Florida Electric Cooperative. Each high school within WFEC’s service area selects a representative for the State Youth Tour in the fall of each year. The selected representatives then go on to compete for the two slots available for the National Youth Tour. to re-circulate the water every day to remove debris. Most of it can be removed using a skimmer or vacuum. Longer circulation times don’t necessarily reduce the growth of algae. Using chemicals in the water and scrubbing the walls are the best methods to remove it. Here’s a great tip to lower your energy consumption: reduce your pool’s filtration time to just six hours per day. If the water doesn’t appear clean, increase the time until it does. Running pool pumps during off-peak hours will also help reduce the co-ops costs. An off-peak time is a time of low demand on the electrical system. In WFEC’s service area, 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. is the best time to run a pool pump. Installing timers to control the pump’s cycling is also a great way to save. very summer as the temperature and air conditioner usage rises, so do questions about energy costs. Although as much as half of the energy used in your home goes to heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), it is sometimes tough to consider the long-term payback of a more energy efficient HVAC unit. As a result, West Florida Electric has a heat pump rebate program which includes rebates to members who upgrade their heat pumps to a more efficient model. The program is our way of rewarding your efforts to be more energy efficient. Air conditioners are measured by Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER). SEER is calculated by dividing the amount of cooling provided during a normal year by energy used. Regardless of your HVAC unit’s current SEER rating, when it is needed, replacing your unit with one rated higher can bring lower energy costs – as much as 5 percent to 10 percent on cooling costs, as long as everything is installed correctly. 91489002 To take advantage of the program, your new unit must be sized properly. A Manual J calculation must be performed by a certified licensed HVAC contractor or a WFEC Energy Services Representative. This load calculation is mandatory to participate in the rebate program. Rebates of $100/ton are available for 13-14 SEER units, but are only payable on this size for manufactured homes in lieu of or replacement of electric furnaces; rebates for 15 SEER units are $150/ton and 16 SEER or greater are $200/ton. Rebates are also available on geothermal heat pumps. Of course, the higher the SEER, the higher the initial investment. That’s why WFEC’s rebates to members who upgrade their heat pumps to a more energy efficient air-source or geothermal model make a big difference.
