f you were asked to associate an image or a person with West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC), we bet you would picture a lineworker. One of the most visible employees of the co-op, lineworkers work tirelessly to ensure our community receives uninterrupted power 24/7. “Lineworker” is listed as one of the top 10 most dangerous jobs in the U.S. This is understandable as they perform detailed tasks near high-voltage power lines. Regardless of the time of day, having to brave stormy weather and other challenging conditions, lineworkers must climb 40 feet in the air, often carrying heaving equipment to get the job done. Being a lineworker is not a glamorous or easy profession. It takes years of specialized training, ongoing education, dedication, and equally important, a sense of service and commitment. How else can you explain the willingness to leave the comfort of your home to tackle a challenging job in difficult conditions, when most are sheltering comfortably at home? The Danger Surrounding Downed Power Lines

hat would you do if you encountered a downed power line? Because safety is our top priority, we want you to know what to do and what not to do if this occurs. Remember: There’s no way to tell if a downed line is still energized just by looking at it. Even on the ground, up to 500,000 volts of electricity can be coursing through it. Because electricity also travels through the ground, the earth can be energized up to 35 feet away in all directions from where the line has fallen! That’s why you should always take the safest action by staying AWAY from downed power lines and anything touching them. Do not drive over a downed line, and never attempt to move a downed power line or anything in contact with it, including tree limbs. They can act as a conductor for electricity. Even though your first instinct is to pull away a person who is in direct or indirect contact with the downed line, don’t touch them. Grab that person, and you could be electrocuted. Instead, grab a phone and call 911. It’s also dangerous to touch or step in water near a downed power line. Avoid using objects such as brooms or sticks to move a downed power line or anything in contact with it. Remember that non-conductive materials can carry electricity even if they’re only slightly wet. Another situation you should prepare for involves your vehicle and downed lines. If your car comes into contact with a downed power line, remain inside the vehicle. The car will shield you. Call 911 for help, honk your horn and direct others to stay away from your car. Do not exit the vehicle until workers have de-energized the downed line and given you clearance. Remember, electricity always seeks a path to the ground. If you absolutely must exit your vehicle because it is on fire, minimize the ISSUE APRIL 2021

possibility for a strong electric shock: Jump clear of the vehicle with both feet together, avoiding contact with both the car and the ground at the same time. Then, shuffle away from the car with small steps. Be sure to keep your feet together and on the ground at all times. We’re connecting you to safety, because we care about your wellbeing. Sharing these lifesaving tips could help others, too.

3 tablespoons plus 11/2 teaspoon cornstarch 1 cup milk 1/3 cup lemon juice 3 large egg yolks, lightly beaten 1/3 cup butter, cubed 1 tablespoon grated lemon zest 1 cup sour cream 1 cup heavy whipping cream, whipped 1 9 inch pie crust

Directions:

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. In a large, heavy, saucepan, mix sugar & cornstarch. Whisk in milk & lemon juice. Cook & stir on medium-high heat until thickened and bubbly. Reduce heat. In a small bowl, whisk a small amount of hot mixture into the egg yolks, return all to the pan. Bring to a gentle boil, cook & stir for two minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in butter & lemon zest. Cool without stirring. Stir in sour cream. Add filling to the baked pie crust. When that is cool, top with whipped cream. Store in refrigerator.

Programmable Thermostats Can Save Homeowners Money

rogrammable thermostats have the potential to save homeowners money. The secret to success is the way you use them. A programmable thermostat is ideal for people who are away from home during set periods of time throughout the week. Through proper use of pre-programmed settings, a programmable thermostat can save you about $180 every year in energy costs. However, it is extremely important to be well-educated about their proper use and how to program the thermostat properly. According to Energy Star, about 45 percent of a home’s energy is utilized for heating and cooling. Unfortunately, some of that goes toward heating or cooling unoccupied spaces. For every one degree you turn your thermostat down, you will use approximately one percent less energy.

Here are some rules of thumb for proper use: • Keep the temperature set at its energy savings set-points for long periods of time (at least 8 hours), for example, during the day, when no one is at home, and through the night, after bedtime. • All thermostats let you temporarily make it warmer or cooler, without erasing the pre-set programming. This override is cancelled automatically at the next program period. Remember, you will use more energy and end up paying more if you consistently “hold” or over-ride the pre-programmed settings. • Units usually have two types of hold features: (a) hold/permanent/vacation; (b) temporary. Avoid using the hold/permanent/vacation feature to manage day to day temperature settings. “Hold” or “vacation” features are best used when you’re planning to be away for an extended period of time. Set this feature at a constant, efficient temperature. • Setting your unit to 90 degrees or down to 40 degrees will not heat or cool your home any faster. Most programmable thermostats begin to heat or cool at a set time to reach set temperatures. Units with adaptive recovery features are the exception to this rule. These units are constantly calculating the amount of time required to heat or cool the house, so PAGE 10

It really does save you money. The best way to combat high bills is to reduce your energy usage. Instead of heating or cooling your house while you are away, you are able to save energy and money by customizing a schedule that adapts to your routine. Your energy savings will quickly offset the minimal cost of making the upgrade. Automation equals convenience and savings. Before programmable thermostats our members were stuck with two options: pay to heat or cool your home while out, or come home to uncomfortable temperatures to save. Now, programmable thermostats can do the work for you without giving it a second thought. No need for adjusting the temperature during the day. Programmable thermostats provide reliable precision. These thermostats are precise and give you the ability to adjust and pinpoint the exact temp ideal for you. Every degree can lead you to save one to two percent on utility bills. These thermostats keep a consistent temperature. They can also run at a constant level, maintaining the perfect temperature in your home as it follows your customizable schedule. They increase your home’s efficiency. Your home becomes more energy-efficient throughout all seasons when you choose to use a programmable thermostat. This means you are utilizing resources more efficiently, better preserving your systems and appliances as time goes on. It will optimize your home’s HVAC system. If your HVAC system is nearing the end of its life, but you aren’t financially ready to commit to a full upgrade, pairing your HVAC system with a programmable thermostat provides a more affordable way to help your system operate in the meantime. Then, when you do make the upgrade, already having a programmable thermostat will start you on the right foot by optimizing the efficiency and lifespan of your new unit. Some models provide system alerts. Some models may include sensors that monitor your air filter, notifying you when it is ready to change with an indicator light. Depending on the model, the automatic thermostat will alert you when various parts need to be checked or serviced, which helps you catch issues early. New models let you control your thermostat from anywhere. If you go with a “smart” thermostat, you will be able to use continued on page 12
