Warren & Benton Take Home Top Youth Tour Honors

ottondale High School junior, Zoee Warren and Sneads High School junior, Brittany Benton were named West Florida Electric’s Youth Tour competition winners on Tuesday, March 3. Chelsea Edenfield of Malone was named the alternate. These students will represent WFEC on the National Rural Electric Youth Tour June 13-18, traveling to Washington, D.C. with over 30 other Florida students to join over 1,500 high school juniors representing coops from across the country. Eleven area students participated in the local Youth Tour trip to Tallahassee. They were: Sawyer O’Bryan, Altha School; Cassidy Trammell, Bethlehem School; Trent Woodham, Blountstown High School; Dalton Canipe, Chipley High School; Zoee Warren, Cottondale High School; Sheyanna Chambliss, Graceville High School; Chelsea Edenfield, Malone School; Samantha Snell, Poplar Springs School and Brittany Benton, Sneads High School. Maegen Zauner and Madison Curry from Chipley High School also participated in the FECA’s essay competition for the children and grandchildren of cooperative employees and trustees. merica’s electric cooperatives have designated the second Monday of April as National Lineman Appreciation Day. West Florida Electric will honor the hard working men who often work in challenging conditions to keep the lights on. The full text of the resolution, which the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) Board adopted unanimously, follows: “Whereas linemen leave their families and put their lives on the line every day to keep the power on; Whereas linemen work 365 days a year under dangerous conditions to build, maintain and repair the electric infrastructure; Whereas linemen are the first responders of the electric cooperative family, getting power back on and making things safe for all after storms and accidents; and Whereas there would be no electric cooperatives without the brave men and women who comprise our corps of linemen; Therefore be it resolved that NRECA recognize the Second Monday of April of each year as National Lineman Appreciation Day and make available to electric cooperatives, materials and support to recognize the contributions of these valuable men and women to America’s Electric Cooperatives.” We proudly recognize all electric linemen for the services they perform around the clock in dangerous conditions to keep power flowing and protect the public’s safety. “Electric linemen do not often receive the recognition they deserve,” said Russell Dunaway, Executive Vice President & CEO of West Florida Electric. “They work all hours of the day, often in hazardous conditions far from their families, going above and beyond to restore power to their communities. Our linemen, as well as linemen from across the nation, truly deserve this special day of recognition.” WFEC invites members to take a moment to thank a lineman for the work they do. Outage Management Due to West Florida Electric’s aggressive right-of-way/vegetation management program, the inspection and maintenance of poles and equipment and the sectionalizing of lines, our statistics reflect a dramatic reduction in the average outage duration for each member served by the cooperative. According to Penny Hagan, Manager, Member Services, WFEC has seen a reduction of core outage numbers by about 35-40 percent since 2004.
