Wetaskiwin has a rich and storied history.
For centuries before settlers arrived, Wetaskiwin’s land was inhabited by the Plains Cree people. The city’s name, “Wetaskiwin,” comes from Cree law, meaning “coming or being on the land together in peace and harmony.” A historic story from around 1867 tells of two revered Chiefs, Buffalo Child of the Blackfoot and Little Bear of the Cree, who were on the brink of a battle.
Both Chiefs independently scouted the same hill for an advantage point and unexpectedly came face to face. After a tense standoff, they dropped their weapons and engaged in hand-to-hand combat. After a fierce battle, they mutually decided to rest. While smoking their pipes, Little Bear, the Cree Chief, accidentally took a puff from Buffalo Child’s pipe, which symbolized the sharing of the peace pipe.
Realizing the significance of this unintentional act, they understood that it was an irrevocable pledge of friendship and peace. They pledged to be friends and, as tribal leaders, ensured their people would also be friends, putting an end to thoughts of war.
This act of unity and peace marked a pivotal moment in Wetaskiwin’s history, emphasizing the power of understanding and co-operation between different cultures.
Today, Wetaskiwin thrives with a population exceeding 13,400 residents, offering a wealth of services and opportunities throughout the community. Join us as we guide you through the diverse tapestry of our city, where tradition meets modernity, and where every step tells a story waiting to be discovered.
Let the adventure begin in Wetaskiwin!

We are located on Treaty 6 Territory–the ancestral and traditional gathering place of the Cree, Blackfoot, Métis, Nakota Sioux, Iroquois, Dene, Ojibway, Saulteaux, Anishinaabeg, and many others whose histories, languages, and cultures continue to influence our community and way of life. We are grateful for the land’s blessings and teachings, as well as the Traditional Knowledge keepers and Elders who have always walked in harmony with the spirit of this land since time immemorial. Hai hai.

Located inside the Wetaskiwin Mall (3725 56 Street), the mural painted by Lance Cardinal tells four powerful stories of healing: smudging for spiritual ceremony, gathering land-based medicines, the Jingle dancer’s healing through movement, and elders’ wisdom for healing through knowledge.
Outside the Wetaskiwin District Heritage Museum, a new trio of murals by local artists explores themes of heritage and nature. One mural features two women’s faces, honoring the museum’s Women of Aspenland exhibit. Start at City Hall, built in 1908 as a courthouse and now home to municipal offices. Then explore Wetaskiwin’s Historic Downtown, featuring 13+ commemorative plaques, heritage buildings, and a mix of charming shops and essential services.
Before highways connected communities, railways powered local economies. The Central Railway served our region from 1913–1981. Visit the Alberta Central Railway Museum to explore a recreation of the 1907 Wetaskiwin CPR depot and see how passengers and freight moved across the Alberta prairies. Open seasonally each summer.

In 1927, during Canada’s Diamond Jubilee, Wetaskiwin residents joyously marked the occasion by erecting a cairn commemorating 60 years of peace between the Nehiyawak (Cree) and Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) Nations.
Wetaskiwin’s distinctive 10-storey water tower is a familiar beacon for anyone arriving in the city. Built in 1909 and carefully restored in 2005 thanks to dedicated local residents, it remains one of Wetaskiwin’s enduring symbols—iconic, welcoming, and full of prairie charm.

Originally situated in the Peace Hills with a commanding view of Wetaskiwin, this historic monument now graces the green space adjacent to Wetaskiwin’s iconic water tower. Designated as a municipal historic site, it stands as a testament to the enduring commitment to peace and holds a cherished place in the city’s heritage.

As with any place I visit, my first question is always: where can we eat? Wetaskiwin has some excellent local gems — from bakeries to comfortfood institutions to patio dining.
Start with something sweet at Nio’s Baked Creations (just off Main Street at 4909 50 Street), a small bakery owned by a Filipino family and packed with tempting options — breads, buns, muffins, cakes, and their famous cinnamon buns. Don’t leave without trying the popular “pilipit”, a Filipino twisted doughnut (think mini doughnuts, but long and braided).
For lunch, head to Huckleberry’s Cafe, a true Wetaskiwin institution that’s been serving slowroasted Alberta beef and its famous dill pickle soup for decades (since 1993). The cream-based soup is made fresh daily and includes ground beef, shredded carrots, and pickles — a must-order. Save room for dessert: their Huckleberry pie is also made fresh daily, and most of the menu is made from scratch.
And if you’re the type who believes in second lunch (no judgement), stop by Seoul Restaurant (4912 50 St.) — Wetaskiwin’s first Japanese and Korean

restaurant
(opened in 2013). The menu is wide-ranging, with classic Korean dishes, soups, pancakes, nearly 20 specialty sushi rolls, and Japanese bento boxes. Dine in the main space, book a private room, or take it to-go.
For dinner, book a table at The Glens Grill at Montgomery Glen Golf & Country Club and enjoy patio dining overlooking the course. The restaurant has served “local fare with gourmet flair” since 2007, with a menu that highlights Alberta-grown and Alberta-produced ingredients.

Wetaskiwin isn’t just a stop along the highway — it’s where aviation meets racing and heritage meets hands-on adventure, all in an easy twoday getaway.
Start at the Wetaskiwin & District Heritage Museum: admire the outdoor murals, then explore 15,000+ artifacts that tell the region’s story (grab a coffee or tea and wander). That evening, shift into high gear at Edmonton International Raceway with the chance to drive a real race car on a professional oval track — and if you’re visiting in July, look for the NASCAR NAPA 300 weekend.
Stay at Best Western Wayside Inn, then head to Meat Shack Texas BBQ (or choose from Wetaskiwin’s many local dining options).
Breakfast first at Graze Breakfast Co. downtown.
Next, visit the Reynolds Museum and level it up with Learn to Drive a Model T — then grab lunch at Dirty Water Dogs.

For a true wow moment, fly with Alberta Biplanes from the Wetaskiwin Regional Airport in an open-cockpit 1943 Boeing Stearman.
Finish with a giant milkshake at The Unicorn Cafe, browse downtown shops, and consider a Trackside Distillery tour (tastings are for legalage visitors).
Saturday night: return to the Raceway — or catch a show at the historic Manluk Theatre.
So pack a weekend bag and come discover the unexpected…YOUR Wetaskiwin story is waiting.
