As one of the foremost producers of programming for the PBS system, WETA plays a very special role in public media. In the realm of public television, we embrace the responsibility of helping the American people stay informed about news events, issues, policy and much more. Among our most important services to the nation is our newscast PBS News Hour, the broadcast element of a highly respected news operation that also reports across digital media platforms.

Recently, PBS News Hour received a Peabody Award — a distinguished broadcast and digital media honor akin to a Pulitzer Prize — for its coverage of changes to U.S. immigration policy under the current administration. Reporting included comprehensive looks at immigration policy, historical context, and the impact of immigration enforcement on communities in our nation.

Peabody Awards are prestigious — unique because they are decided by unanimous vote of a board of jurors. We are delighted and proud that PBS News Hour has received this significant recognition. I congratulate the entire News Hour team and applaud their outstanding ongoing journalism.

Also paramount among WETA news and public a airs productions is our informative news analysis program Washington Week with The Atlantic, which is among our most-watched and most-streamed program o erings each week. The popular news analysis series Washington Week with The Atlantic each Friday features in-depth reporting on news in the spotlight, providing context and insight on the week’s top stories. American Experience: George H.W. Bush

Fridays, June 19 & 26 at 9 p.m. on WETA PBS; stream “The Presidents” collection on WETA+

The two-part 2008 film George H.W. Bush, one in a series of award-winning and critically acclaimed presidential biographies from history showcase American Experience, examines the life and career of the 41st president. Spotlighted are his service in World War II and his early career in Texas, and his days in the Oval O ce, first as vice president to Ronald Reagan, then as the leader who presided over the first Gulf War. Drawing upon Bush’s personal diaries and interviews with his advisors and critics, the film also explores Bush’s role as the patriarch of a political family whose influence was then unequaled in modern American life. More documentaries in the American Experience series on the nation’s leaders — including the film on George H.W. Bush — can be streamed with WETA+, which in June features the collection “The Presidents,” o ering films on Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Lyndon Baines Johnson, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan and others, in addition to the American Experience film The American Vice President.

WETA PBS explores America’s stories

• The American Revolution — Series continues with 4 episodes, Saturdays, June 6 & 13 at 7 p.m. The acclaimed 2025 Florentine Films and WETA history series, directed by Ken Burns, Sarah Botstein and David Schmidt, chronicles America’s founding struggle and origin story, exploring the 1775-1783 War for Independence. Stream the series now on WETA+ with PBS Passport, or free on WETA+, May 25-July 12.

• Great Migrations: A People on the Move June 27 & July 11, 8-10 p.m. on WETA PBS.A history series created in association with WETA and written, hosted and executive-produced by Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. examines the influence of Black migration on American culture and society.

• Declarations: Black Americans and the Revolutionary War — Monday, June 29 at 10 p.m. on WETA PBS. A film traces the stories of the enslaved and freed Black Americans who fought to define democracy and their liberty through the Revolutionary War.

• Summoned: Frances Perkins and the General Welfare — Saturday, June 20 at 7 p.m. on WETA PBS. A program tells the story of the woman appointed Labor Secretary by President Franklin D. Roosevelt during the Great Depression. The first female Cabinet member, Perkins created the Social Security program, the federal minimum wage, and the 40-hour work week.

• America 250: A Classical Portrait — A weekly series airing Wednesdays at 2 p.m. on WETA Virtuoso continues, featuring on-air host James Jacobs exploring the story of classical music in America over the past 250 years. June programs spotlight America’s evolving classical music sound — and the many di erent voices its national music came to encompass.

• Choral Showcase — In June, WETA Classical’s weekly Sunday-night 9 p.m. program spotlights more American choral works, including compositions that incorporate American poetry.

Curated 25 for 250 Collection on WETA+ and WETA PBS

WETA’s curated 25 for 250 collection on streaming service WETA+ features documentaries that explore America and its history. The collection, which debuted in May, adds five films each month, with some of the titles also airing Saturday nights on WETA PBS. In 25 for 250, watch for iconic series from Ken Burns and Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., along with acclaimed films from American Experience, American Masters, Frontline and more. • The Civil War — The epic, award-winning, nine-part 1990 documentary series directed by Ken Burns and co-produced by Florentine Films and WETA explores America’s most destructive and defining conflict, the American Civil War. Historian and author David McCullough narrates.

• Reconstruction: America After the Civil War — In this two-part WETA co-production, Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr. examines the transformative years following the Civil War, when the nation struggled to rebuild itself in the face of profound loss, massive destruction and revolutionary social change

• American Experience: The Gilded Age — A history film spotlights the titans and barons of the glittering late-19th century, whose materialistic extravagance contrasted harshly with the poverty of the struggling workers who challenged them. The vast wealth disparities between the two groups sparked debates that continue today.

• American Experience: The Vote — A 4-part production introduces the unsung heroes of the women’s su rage movement and chronicles the campaign that led to passage of the 19th Amendment, which granted American women the vote, ushering in the largest expansion of voting rights in U.S. history. The film airs Saturday, June 20, 8 p.m.-midnight on WETA PBS.

• Jazz — The 10-part 2001 documentary series directed by Ken Burns and co-produced by Florentine Films and WETA presents a history of jazz in America from the art form’s origins through the 1990s — and concurrently presents a social history of 20th-century America. Keith David narrates

• Grantchester, The Final Season — A bitter winter, civil unrest, the Profumo A air, Martin Luther King Jr., the rise of The Beatles, the Great Train Robbery…1963 was a year of high drama and change. And as it was in the world, so it is in Grantchester. This last season of the drama opens in the Summer of ’63 for more adventures with crime-fighting duo Alphy and Geordie and friends as they explore family and forgiveness, identity and faith, and finding one’s purpose in life. • Patience, Series 2 — In the British detective drama, neurodivergent young crimefighter Patience Evans returns to help tackle cases in York, with fiery new boss DI Frankie Monroe on the scene — and also faces challenges in love and loss. Binge-watch 8 Series 2 episodes as of May 31.

• The Mountain Detective, Series 4 — In this “Walter Presents” international drama, former policeman Alex Hugo leaves Marseilles in search of a new life but ends up confronting violence in the mountains of the Hautes-Alpes. • Shakespeare &Hathaway: Private Investigators, Series 1-2

— The quirky crime drama set in Stratford-upon-Avon stars Mark Benton as down-on-his-luck but skilled private detective Frank Hathaway and Jo Joyner as Lu Shakespeare, a former hairdresser who becomes his investigative partner. Binge-watch two seasons of the drama (20 episodes) as of June 1.

• The Changing Face of Elton John — A film follows the career of the iconic rock star through the prism of his ever-changing style. From massive spectacles and spandex to Versace suits and wigs, Sir Elton is an international institution. Available June 1.

The Kimberley: Australia’s Wild West

Wednesdays at 10 p.m. starting June 17 on WETA PBS; stream with WETA+

Athree-part miniseries spotlights Australia’s remote northwest — a strikingly beautiful land that defies time. “The Kimberley” spans more than 400,000 square kilometers of remote tropical wilderness: turquoise coastlines, towering gorges, sandy deserts and sprawling savanna. Its extreme climate and harsh terrain hides remarkable biodiversity, from the fearsome crocodiles that rule the rivers, to the marsupial gliders who soar over the savanna. Through monsoon abundance and drought, fire and flood, the programs follow denizens’ wild lives across intense tropical seasons of challenges and opportunities — and tracks the quests of those working to protect the Kimberley’s creatures and their habitat. The series tells the story of a year in one of Earth’s last great wildlands, revealing the hidden treasures of Australia’s Wild West.

ETA is proud to again partner with DC/DOX, the Washington, D.C. film festival founded in 2023 to celebrate documentary film. The annual festival brings boundarypushing films, vital conversations, and a broad community of filmmakers and documentary lovers to the nation’s capital to champion and explore non-fiction cinema. Grantchester, The Final Season

Masterpiece drama airs Sundays, June 14-August 2 at 9 p.m. on WETA PBS; stream with WETA+

After 10 previous seasons, beloved Masterpiece drama Grantchester wraps up with its 11th and final series, featuring 8 new episodes starting June 14. In the drama, adapted from novels by James Runcie, it’s now the eventful summer of 1963. Rev. Alphy Kotteram reconnects with his estranged mother and questions his faith and the road not taken. Detective Inspector Geordie Keating, enjoying relative peace, faces a beguiling o er that could end his crime-solving partnership with Alphy; and his wife Cathy Keating’s business is proving a success. Meanwhile, Leonard Finch discovers his paternal side; and Miss Scott faces a life-changing event. Daisy Coulam, writer, series creator and executive producer, said: “At its heart, Grantchester is a show about the power of friendship and love.” As events unfold in Series 11, everyone questions the path they are on, and big decisions are made. Robson Green returns as Geordie, with Rishi Nair as Alphy. Binge the final season on WETA+ with PBS Passport as of the night of June 14.

Patience, Series 2

8 p.m. Sundays starting June 14 on WETA PBS; stream with WETA+

Ella Maisy Purvis reprises her role as an autistic researcher in the Criminal Records O ce of the city of York in a new 8-episode season of the detective drama Patience — an adaptation of the French series Astrid. The series presents an authentic neurodivergent perspective. In Series 2, Patience is back tackling puzzling cases when a new detective, Frankie Monroe (Jessica Hynes of Miss Austen, W1A and Twenty Twelve), bursts onto the scene. Their di erences spark tension, but they learn to work as a team as they investigate cases of murder and mystery across the city. Meanwhile, Patience searches for her mother and navigates the ups and downs of new love. Binge Series 2 of Patience on WETA+ with PBS Passport as of May 31.

Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators

8 p.m. Thursdays starting June 11 on WETA PBS

WETA reprises Series 1 of the quirky crime drama from the production team that created Father Brown and The Coroner. Mark Benton stars as private detective Frank Hathaway, who works alone in picturesque Stratford-uponAvon, home of the Bard. Frank isn’t faring so well — he is skilled at solving crimes but he’s low on funds and needs a partner. Fatefully, in walks ex-hairdresser and people-person Lu Shakespeare — portrayed by Jo Joyner — and the two eventually form an unlikely detecting duo. Among their 10 cases in Series 1, vengeful lovers stalk the streets, the mayor is murdered, and a magician’s trick fatally misfires. The new partners learn to trust each other, aided by their actor-receptionist, who is constantly learning his lines.

Big Adventures: Into the Amazon with Robson Green

9 p.m. Thursdays starting June 18 on WETA UK

Anew three-part miniseries follows Grantchester actor Robson Green’s journey into the heart of the largest rainforest on Earth to showcase the Amazon’s unparalleled diversity of life and to spotlight the environmental issues threatening this vital ecosystem. Join Green as he swims with pink river dolphins, learns about the remaining uncontacted tribes living deep in the jungle, and joins the fight against illegal logging. Green braves a daunting climb to the treetops, witnesses the e ects of deforestation, visits an animal rehabilitation center, learns about the pharmaceutical importance of the Amazon’s indigenous plants, navigates the Rio Negro on a traditional boat, learns essential survival skills, and much more.

As the beloved drama Grantchester draws to an end in Season 11, a new special shares favorite moments that have made this Masterpiece series and its many characters so popular over the years. Interviews with the cast and crew, rare behind-the-scenes footage, and video clips spanning 10 seasons reveal how this uniquely British crime drama about faith, justice, and the power of friendship became such an enduring hit. Our Favorite Things About Grantchester profiles the main characters in the series and includes chapters on supporting characters, Dickens the dog, sermons, and highlights from Seasons 1-10, plus a sneak peek at Season 11. The program also airs on WETA PBS, June 14 at 6:30 p.m. before the Season 11 premiere.

The Marlow Murder Club on Masterpiece

Saturdays, June 13 & 20, 8-10 p.m. on WETA UK

WETA UK reprises the four-part Masterpiece series from the creator of Death in Paradise. Retired archaeologist Judith Potts (Samantha Bond) lives alone in the peaceful town of Marlow, filling her time setting crosswords for the local paper. During her regular evening swim in the Thames, Judith hears a gunshot coming from her neighbor’s garden and believes a murder has taken place. When the local police, led by newly promoted DS Tanika Malik, are reluctant to believe her story, Judith starts her own investigation, enlisting the help of vicar’s wife Becks and local dog-walker and empty-nester Suzie. Victims begin to pile up, and the unlikely sleuths must use all of their skills to try to stop the killer.

WETA UK continues marathons of Downton Abbey on Masterpiece, Saturdays at 11 a.m. through June 20.

Wolf Trap Operas on Opera Matinee

Saturdays at 1 p.m.

Upon the conclusion of the Metropolitan Opera broadcast season on May 30, WETA Classical’s Saturday-afternoon series Opera Matinee in June showcases productions from Wolf Trap Opera’s 2025 summer season at The Barns. Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro starts the WTO broadcasts on June 6. This enduring opera buffa is a delightful concoction of love and comedy and fidelity. The opera, featuring divine music, is based on a play by the 18th-century French writer Pierre Beaumarchais that was considered revolutionary because of its political satire and changing attitudes about aristocracy. The June 13 broadcast presents Dialogues of the Carmelites, a 1956 dramatic opera by Francis Poulenc, based on a historical event during the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror: the execution of Carmelite nuns by guillotine for their refusal to renounce their vows. Through a series of conversations, the nuns explore the meaning of faith, sacrifice and martyrdom.

The following week, on June 20, Opera Matinee features Edmond Dédé’s 1887 composition Morgiane, the oldest surviving opera by a Black American, in a recorded performance by Opera Lafayette. The light rescue opera spotlights events unfolding from a kidnapping by the Sultan of Isfahan. Wrapping up the month’s o erings is Bedřich Smetana’s lighthearted 1866 comic opera The Bartered Bride, a story of true love, ambitious parents and a scheming marriage broker, on June 27 in a recorded performance by Vienna State Opera.

Junction Trio on Front Row Washington

Monday, June 22 at 9 p.m.

In recent months, Front Row Washington has been celebrating the 60th season of the Shriver Hall Concert Series in Baltimore, featuring exceptional concerts from past seasons. On June 22 at 9 p.m., the final concert we are presenting in this season of Front Row Washington will be a February 2022 performance by the Junction Trio — made up of some of today’s most in-demand soloists: Stefan Jackiw, Conrad Tao and Jay Campbell. Together they perform Passing Through, Staying Put by Christopher Trapani (who takes inspiration from Geo Dyer’s novel “Je in Venice, Death in Varanasi”); the Piano Trio in A minor composed by Maurice Ravel in 1914 while in a Basque commune; and Robert Schumann’s Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, composed in 1847. Front Row Washington then goes on summer break in July and August, returning on September 7 for more live concert recordings from around the national capital area.

Also wrapping up its current season is WETA Classical’s engaging podcast Classical Breakdown — visit classicalbreakdown.org — which on June 9 spotlights the opera Tosca by Giacomo Puccini and on June 23 highlights recent recordings to listen to over the summer. The podcast returns with new programs in September.

America 250: A Classical Portrait

WETA Classical series America 250: A Classical Portrait continues this month with more explorations of the story of classical music in America. WETA Classical’s James Jacobs hosts the series; below, he previews June episodes.

In June on the series America 250: A Classical Portrait we search for America’s voice, while becoming ever more aware how many di erent voices its national music must encompass. The first week (June 3) we arrive at that pivotal moment in the 1890s when the great Bohemian composer Antonín Dvořák was serving as the director of New York’s National Conservatory of Music and used that platform to challenge American composers to go beyond the traditional European models and start drawing on Native American and African American music for inspiration, just as he drew on Czech folk music. He learned Black spirituals from Harry Burleigh, the great singer, composer and chronicler of these traditions. We’ll also trace how jazz, ragtime and the blues found their way into American classical music.

In the second week (June 10) we’ll turn to an insurance salesman from Connecticut, Charles Ives, who created new sounds — from mystic symphonies and colorful tone poems to bracing chamber music and tender art songs — by tapping into three other veins of American music: New England hymnody, folk songs and military bands, refracted through the increased chaos and societal divisions of the dawning 20th century. Ives refused to participate in the musical establishment — one of several American composers to embrace the loneliness of being a maverick. In the third week (June 17) we’ll hear the ways they expanded the scope and even the meaning of music, from prepared pianos to electronic experiments to diverse ethnic influences to exploring the music within silence.

The composer who stood astride the mainstream and the maverick was Aaron Copland, who found the sound that for many has come to define American classical music. In the fourth week (June 24) we’ll explore his journey toward that sound — as well as his legacy.

American Music on Choral Showcase

As WETA Classical’s special series America 250: A Classical Portrait continues this month, Choral Showcase presents more American choral works. On June 7, the program features an American mass, the Mass in E-flat by Amy Beach. On June 14, there’s Freedom Music for Juneteenth with Spirituals by Chanticleer; Sanctuary Road, Paul Moravec’s oratorio on the Underground Railroad; Credo, Margaret Bonds’s collaboration with W.E.B. Dubois; and Florence Price’s Song of Hope. Then, on June 21, the broadcast presents Water Music, American-style, with Dominick Argento’s Walden Pond, Robert Convery’s Voyages, Eric Whitacre’s Water Night, and Alan Hovhaness’s And God Created Great Whales. Rounding out the month, the program’s American poetry series continues on June 28
