T

he arrival of the New Year heralds new programs, new seasons of long-running series, new productions — and change. With the elimination of federal funding for public media — including WETA — by Congress in 2025, we have had to take stock of our resources and make the painful but necessary decision to end production of PBS News Weekend as of January 11. Producing live weekend news broadcasts is unfortunately now beyond our means. We value and appreciate the extraordinary, diligent work of the team that has produced this exceptional program at WETA since 2022. The PBS News team will continue to maintain digital publishing on weekends — including at pbs.org/newshour — to deliver timely news and information seven days a week. Our program change — in addition to recent WETA and PBS News staff reductions — became necessary to make our public service sustainable. We remain committed to producing PBS News Hour, Washington Week with The Atlantic and additional outstanding news and public affairs programming as an essential part of our public media mission. Replacing PBS News Weekend as of January 17-18 are two new half-hour PBS News programs presenting informative content. The Saturday program, Horizons from PBS News, will feature stories in science, health and technology; and on Sundays, Compass Points from PBS News will illuminate foreign affairs stories. These weekly programs will be produced in-studio at WETA by PBS News during the week; learn more about them on the page opposite this column. Your outpouring of support since the loss of our federal funding has been, and remains, vital. We will continue to pursue our important mission to inform and to educate.

In other programming new to WETA this month, we premiere new seasons of Masterpiece dramas All Creatures Great and Small and Miss Scarlet — and feature classic detective dramas including Inspector George Gently. Making their debut in January as well are new seasons of acclaimed genealogy and history series Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr., produced in association with WETA, and our Emmy-winning local restaurant series Signature Dish. The series History with David Rubenstein, a WETA presentation, also rolls out a new season, featuring new captivating discussions of history with distinguished scholars and authors. Much of the content noted above can be streamed on WETA+ or with WETA+ with PBS Passport, enabling you to watch these offerings at a time of your choosing. PBS News Launches New Weekend Programs Horizons from PBS News airs Saturdays at 6 p.m. starting Jan. 17 Compass Points from PBS News airs Sundays at 6 p.m. starting Jan. 18

his month, WETA debuts two new 30-minute weekend productions from PBS News that will air weekly. Horizons from PBS News will focus on science, health and technology and is hosted by William Brangham; and Compass Points from PBS News will focus on foreign affairs and be hosted by William Brangham hosts Horizons Nick Schifrin hosts Compass Points Nick Schifrin. The weekly programs premiere, respectively, on Saturday, January 17 and Sunday, January 18 in the weekend evening timeslot held by PBS News Weekend, which will present its final broadcast on Sunday, January 11. The new programs will also be distributed as video podcasts across PBS News’ digital, podcast and social platforms. “As we lay out the next chapter of PBS News’ multi-platform programming, we are delighted to launch two new weekend broadcasts, both of which will build on existing editorial strengths of our newsroom and allow us to dive deeper into topics our audiences care about deeply,” said PBS News senior executive producer and WETA senior vice president Sara Just, who will serve as senior executive producer of the new programs. Horizons, airing weekly on Saturdays at 6 p.m., will feature experts and professionals in the world of science, health, technology and the environment and each week will explore a single issue such as the Artificial Intelligence race, advances in medicine, and the latest developments in climate science. The program will be hosted by Peabody and Emmy award-winning journalist and PBS News Hour correspondent William Brangham. Compass Points, airing weekly on Sundays at 6 p.m., will take an all-encompassing look at a prominent international topic each week and provide timely analysis with a panel of experts including former government officials and journalists on issues such as America’s power and influence abroad, the shifting world order under the Trump Administration, and what global conflicts and rising tensions could mean for America’s interests. This program will be hosted by Peabody and duPont-Columbia award-winning journalist and PBS News Hour foreign affairs and defense correspondent Nick Schifrin. The new programs — to be produced in WETA’s television studio during each week — are productions of NewsHour Productions LLC, a wholly owned non-profit subsidiary of WETA. The primary news producer for PBS, NewsHour Productions produces PBS News Hour; Washington Week with The Atlantic; primetime and daytime breaking news and political specials; documentaries; and now Compass Points and Horizons. Although PBS News is ending production of PBS News Weekend, the PBS News team will continue to provide news reporting online throughout weekends.

tarting January 11, Masterpiece premieres a new season of beloved drama All Creatures Great and Small, returning to the beautiful Yorkshire Dales for more heartwarming human and animal tales. In the seven new episodes, the series jumps forward in time to May 1945, revisiting Darrowby only to find Skeldale House at sixes and sevens. As victory in Europe is declared, there is the promise of peace at last, but James is wishing for a greater sense of peace at the understaffed surgery as he juggles vet work with a busy family life and an exceptionally challenging, chaotic Siegfried. James and Helen now live at Heston Grange, where Helen is enjoying time with young Jimmy and Rosie but has big changes to contend with at the farm. Tristan returns from several years at war and must re-adjust to life back home. Meanwhile, Mrs. Hall works hard to bring everybody back together and restore harmony at the surgery. We watch as our characters reconnect and find renewed purpose, as the world around them starts to breathe again and look to a brighter future. n the new season — Series 6 — of Miss Scarlet on Masterpiece, airing starting January 11, Miss Eliza Scarlet is doing her best to have it all. In the six new episodes, her detective agency is thriving, but her personal life enters new territory as she attempts to develop a relationship with Scotland Yard Inspector Alexander Blake. Eliza may be an expert at solving crimes, but she is a novice when it comes to love. Can she contend with the twin demands of her personal and professional life? Meanwhile, Moses returns from Paris and enters into a rivalry with Clarence. Among Eliza’s cases, a violent psychiatric patient is on the loose, leaving behind a murder, a mystery and an unidentified body; a high-society divorce leads to the disappearance of a racehorse; the new Detective Inspector of the London Police hires her for a case involving his uncle, who is also sought by Scotland Yard; and a foreign ambassador’s death sparks political intrigue. new six-episode British crime drama written by and starring Mark Gatiss (Sherlock) follows a literary enthusiast and bookseller, Gabriel Book, who in post-World-War II London combines his day job with his favorite hobby — helping to solve knotty murder cases. His wartime was packed with espionage and secrets, and his peacetime is just as full of adventure. Book aids the police in criminal investigations, but the time he spends with the force is not without its dangers. For although he is happily married to his childhood best friend Trottie (Polly Walker, Bridgerton), Book is a gay man living at a time when homosexuality was illegal. Gabriel and Trottie take in former petty criminal Jack (Connor Finch), who proves a worthy assistant in the shop and in Book’s sleuthing. eturn to the picturesque fictional English county of Midsomer as Midsomer Murders, Series 24 — in four episodes new to WETA — finds DCI Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon) and his trusty sidekick, DS Winter (Nick Hendrix), attempting to solve new perplexing crimes while also exploring the quirks of the delightful yet deadly region. This season, the dynamic duo is thrust into a series of intriguing new cases, investigating turmoil within an old-money family, the mysterious death of a treasure hunt organizer, and a village’s fight against a wealthy American oilman to retain its title as “The Greenest Village in Midsomer.” As always, Barnaby and Winter are joined by inimitable pathologist Dr. Fleur Perkins (Annette Badland).

D

etective drama Inspector George Gently, based on the “Inspector Gently” novels by Alan Hunter, stars Martin Shaw (Death in Holy Orders; and Cranford) as an incorruptible policeman transplanted from London to northeast England in the mid-1960s. Gently and his cocky young protégé, Detective Sergeant John Bacchus (Lee Ingleby, Line of Duty) of the (fictitious) North East Constabulary, investigate brutal crimes as they confront the social and political changes of the era. The storyline’s setting is centered in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland and County Durham. WETA presents eight seasons of the drama on Thursday nights starting January 22. Binge Series 1-4 of Inspector George Gently, now available for streaming on WETA+ with PBS Passport. Series 5-8 will stream as of March 1.

ETA premieres a new 13-episode season of the series History with David Rubenstein, featuring the author/interviewer exploring American history with distinguished author-scholars. The series, produced by the New-York Historical Society, is brought to a nationwide audience by WETA via PBS. In each halfhour conversation, Rubenstein discusses the country’s stories with a prominent author of history. Rubenstein, a Co-Founder and Co-Executive Chairman of The Carlyle Group, is the author of books that include The American Story: Conversations with Master Historians. Season 7 guests in January are Ron Chernow, Pulitzer Prize-winner and author of Mark Twain; Rick Atkinson, Pulitzer Prize-winner and author of The Fate of the Day: The War for America, Fort Ticonderoga to Charleston 1777 – 1780; Geraldo Cadava, Northwestern University professor and author of The Hispanic Republican: The Shaping of an American Political Identity, from Nixon to Trump; and Fareed Zakaria, CNN program host, Washington Post columnist, and author of Age of Revolutions: Progress and Backlash from 1600 to the Present. ETA’s Emmy Award-winning restaurant series Signature Dish kicks off its fourth season this month with new episodes, highlighting diverse cuisines and special dishes from establishments around Greater Washington. In Let’s Brunch (Jan 5.), host Seth Tillman highlights Host Seth Tillman with Sense of Thai D.C.’s favorite weekend activity. He visits McLean for chef and owner Porntipa “Pat” Pattanamekar grits and grillades; Georgetown for classic chicken-pot pie; and Shaw for a version of shakshuka made with a sweet potato curry. Next, in Taste of Thai (Jan. 12), Seth spotlights distinct regional offerings of Thailand, celebrating the depth and diversity of the nation’s cuisine and delighting in its vibrant, complex flavors in visits to Ashburn, Rockville and Georgetown. District of Duck (Jan. 19) takes a deep dive into all things duck in D.C., revealing how local chefs elevate this classic bird. Seth visits the West End, the U Street Corridor, and Logan Circle to discover the inventive techniques that make duck irresistible, savoring a honey-glazed roast, crispy chicken-fried leg, and more. Wrapping up the month’s episodes, in Bar Bites (Jan. 26), Seth revels in cocktail hour, uncovering standout happy-hour favorites across the District. ETA World, devoted to telling stories that humanize complex issues, shares the best of public media in news, documentaries and more. This month, the nine-part 2018 series Civilizations explores the power of art from earliest civilizations to the present. Liev Schreiber narrates. The PBS/BBC co-production is an exploration of the premise that it is through the creative imagination that humanity expresses its most essential self. The series travels to six continents, visiting renowned cultural landmarks and exploring treasures (including, at right, masks from Benin). Principal contributors to the programs are Simon Schama (Columbia University); Mary Beard (University of Cambridge); and historian David Olusoga (University of Manchester).

Elinor Wonders Why ETA PBS Kids programming includes the animated children’s series Elinor Wonders Why, which encourages preschoolers to follow their curiosity, ask questions when they don’t understand, and find answers using science-inquiry skills. The main character Elinor, the most observant and curious rabbit in Animal Town, introduces kids ages 3-5 to science, nature and community through adventures with her friends Ari, a funny and imaginative bat, and Olive, a perceptive and warm elephant. From That Small Island, narrated by Colin Farrell, offers a journey through time, exploring identity and the enduring spirit of a people. From the Beginning spotlights the earliest peoples, the coming of Christianity and the story of the Vikings; Contested Identities explores the transformation of Ireland and the Irish after the arrival of the Normans and sees the impact of the Tudors and the Protestant Reformation; New Worlds follows the first Irish diaspora to Europe in the 1600s and later to various destinations in the New World; and From the Famine to the Future chronicles 19th-century Irish emigration and its impact on America — and examines the role of the Irish in the world.

From That Small Island: The Story of the Irish

Murder in the Mountains n Austrian crime drama from the curated international collection Walter Presents follows dedicated police investigators in the picturesque Austrian town of Kitzbühel, a tourist center of the Tyrol region. In Series 1’s 13 episodes, the team tackles complex criminal cases where secrets unravel and danger lurks behind every mountain vista. The drama, originally titled SOKO Kitzbühel (an abbreviation for “Sonderkommission,” or “special investigative team”), is centered on detectives Karin Kofler and Lukas Roither, who solve complicated murder cases in and around the resort town, home to many wealthy and powerful people. Kofler’s father often joins in on the investigations. Murder in the Mountains is in German with English subtitles.

The Gold on Masterpiece nspired by the true story of the Brink’s-Mat robbery that took place in London four decades ago, a 6-part Masterpiece drama follows the story of the heist and features an all-star cast: Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey), Jack Lowden (Slow Horses), Dominic Cooper (Mamma Mia!), Tom Cullen (Downton Abbey), Charlotte Spencer (Sanditon) and Emun Elliott (Guilt). In 1983, armed men broke into the Brink’s-Mat security depot near London’s Heathrow Airport and inadvertently stumbled across gold bullion worth £26m. What started as a “typical” armed robbery became the biggest theft in world history at the time.

n January 19 on Monday-evening broadcast Front Row Washington, hear from the chamber ensemble of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields in their October 2024 Chamber Music Maryland concert at Howard Community College’s Smith Theatre. In the performance, the ensemble celebrates some composers who stood up against oppression. They open with an early Shostakovich work — his Prelude and Scherzo for String Octet, Op. 11, composed in 1924. The concert also features Czech composer Erwin Schulhoff ’s Sextet for Strings. Schulhoff ’s commitment to progressive ideals and music would cost him his life in the Würzburg concentration camp in 1942; much of his music was lost in World War II. Also on the broadcast is Mendelssohn’s youthful Octet for Strings.

krainian-born Finnish conductor Dalia Stasevska conducts the National Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Jean Sibelius’ Symphony No.2 in January’s broadcast of NSO Showcase. Written at the turn of the last century, when Finland was rebelling against Russian rule, this “symphony of independence” as it is sometimes called, reflects a personal as well as universal struggle. Two Schumann pieces round out the program: the uniquely virtuosic Concert Piece for Four Horns and Orchestra, and the Rhenish Symphony celebrating the beauty of the Rhine River and Cologne Cathedral.

he nominations for the 2026 Grammy awards for classical music recordings include 42 albums in eight categories, which we will explore on our special program Grammy Week on WETA Virtuoso this month. More than half of the recordings in contention are of pieces by living composers, reflecting the profound changes taking place in the culture of the mainstream classical industry. Aside from an album of Telemann soprano arias and a few short 19thcentury pieces included on compilations, all the other music is from the 20th century (which is increasingly feeling as remote as the 19th). Patti Drennan’s Requiem of Light The field also shows how the traditional classical album format is evolving. The nominated performances of Ravel’s Bolero by the Simón Bolívar Symphony (conducted by Gustavo Dudamel) and Stravinsky’s Symphony in Three Movements by the San Francisco Symphony (conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen) were released as singles. There are several thematic compilations, such as Black Pierrot, a 23-minute recital of songs by William Grant Still and Brittney “B.E.” Boykin sung by baritone Sidney Outlaw. Boykin, who was born in Alexandria, Virginia and graduated from Spelman College in 2011, is also represented on another album in the same category, In This Short Life, featuring mezzosoprano Devony Smith. This makes Boykin the second-most-represented classical composer on this year’s Grammys after Dmitri Shostakovich, whose cello and piano concertos, featuring Yo-Yo Ma and Yuja Wang, comprise this year’s two most conventional nominated albums. The Mexican composer Gabriela Ortiz also makes a strong showing, with a nod for an album devoted to her work along with individual nominations for two of its compositions. Other nominations with a local connection include Patti Drennan’s Requiem of Light featuring The Clarion Choir conducted by Steven Fox; a collection of works by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor performed by the National Philharmonic; and Jeanine Tesori’s Grounded, which premiered at the Kennedy Center in 2023 and was recorded in its revised version by the Metropolitan Opera.
