WETA Focus

In this holiday season of gift-giving and gratitude, on behalf of WETA I would like to extend our profound thanks to you, our members, for your greatest gift to us — your continuing faith and investment in our educational service mission. We embrace, every day, our responsibility to the people of our community and work hard to earn the trust you place in us. When we lost our federal funding this year, you and others rallied around us — and continue to do so — in support of the high-quality content we produce, the vital cultural role of WETA in Greater Washington, and the essential work we do in our community and beyond.

We are deeply honored to serve you. Together, we accomplish so much!

As you gather for the holidays, please enjoy our programmatic gifts to you. In December, tune in to holiday and performance specials on WETA PBS, including The Nutcracker from English National Ballet on Great Performances; the Tabernacle Choir’s special Hope of the Season; and our annual WETA Arts production Songs of the Season, showcasing choral ensembles from around Greater Washington. On WETA Classical, enjoy seasonal music throughout the month and beloved traditional holiday o erings. And on WETA+, stream a vast array of entertaining drama selections and much more.

Stay tuned for exciting programming in the New Year as well! In January, among a wide array of new content we premiere new seasons of Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr., our local restaurant series Signature Dish, and History with David Rubenstein — and Masterpiece rolls out much-anticipated new seasons of popular dramas All Creatures Great and Small and Miss Scarlet.

Thank you for watching, listening and streaming — and for sustaining all that we do on behalf of the public.

WETA World, devoted to telling stories that humanize complex issues, shares the best of public media in news, documentaries and more. December program themes are the Holidays, Religion and Spirituality. Among the program o erings is Ganden: A Joyful Land. Likened by Buddhists to the Vatican City, Ganden, the most influential monastery of Tibetan Buddhism, was the sacred home to monks for more than 500 years before an invasion drove them to start anew in India. The film takes a revealing, intimate look at the lives and remembrances of the last remaining generation of monks to have studied at the renowned monastery in Tibet where the Dalai Lama’s lineage began. Embodying the strength and joy the faith teaches, survivors of the forced exodus tell of their lives in Ganden, old and new, in this moving film.

Shakespeare Works on Great Performances

Thursdays, Dec. 4, 11 & 18 on WETA UK

This month, WETA UK presents three acclaimed adaptations of Shakespeare works on Great Performances and Great Performances at the Met. The first, Hamlet (Dec. 4, repeating Dec. 7), directed by Tony Awardwinner Kenny Leon, is from The Public Theater’s Free Shakespeare in the Park at The Delacorte Theater in Central Park and stars Ato Blankson-Wood. Richard III (Dec. 11, repeating Dec. 14), also taped live in Central Park, features one of the Bard’s most indelible villains; Danai Gurira stars in the title role in the 2022 performance. And Roméo et Juliette (Dec. 18, repeating Dec. 21), features soprano Nadine Sierra and tenor Benjamin Bernheim portraying the star-crossed lovers in Charles Gounod’s adaptation. Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts; Tony Awardwinner Bartlett Sher directs; and Ryan Speedo Green hosts.

Death in Paradise, Series 14

9 p.m. Wednesdays starting Dec. 31 on WETA UK

In 8 episodes new to WETA UK, the Caribbean-island-set mystery series welcomes a new stranger in paradise — a new detective who faces a wide assortment of investigations. Don Gilet (EastEnders) joins the sun-soaked crime drama as Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson, a policeman with a very personal reason for being on the isle of Saint Marie but a serious lack of interpersonal skills. His sleuthing is quickly put to the test in the case of three Santa Clauses found dead under almost impossible circumstances; a murder on a zipline; and a “rum” case of poisoning. But Wilson also has a mystery of his own to solve — one that’s very close to home. Shantol Jackson portrays his colleague Detective Sergeant Naomi Thomas.

RFDS: Royal Flying Doctor Service, Series 3

10 p.m. Wednesdays starting Dec. 31 on WETA UK

The team of doctors, nurses and pilots is reunited and must grapple with the fallout of the domino e ects of a tragedy — mental health issues, an unexpected pregnancy, an emergency amputation, drug addiction, and more. Everyone on the team must also navigate their own personal challenges while being wrapped up inextricably in their patients’ lives. As the Broken Hill crew faces their toughest obstacles yet, they are forced to make di cult personal decisions.

WFauré Quartet on Front Row Washington

Monday, Dec. 8 at 9 p.m.

e know Gustav Mahler as one of the top composers of large-scale orchestral song cycles and symphonies, but he did write some chamber music as well. One work that survives is a piano quartet movement he wrote in 1876 when he was 16 years old. It received a private performance that year and then was lost until his widow Alma Mahler found it in 1964 and had it performed. On Front Row Washington on December 8, we’ll hear the piece performed by German piano ensemble Fauré Quartet from their November 2024 performance at Dumbarton Concerts. Also featured is a work by their namesake, Gabriel Fauré — Piano Quartet No. 1 in C minor, Opus 15 — as well as Brahms’ Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, Opus 25 Tune in Mondays for local concert recordings on Front Row Washington.

CHoliday Music on Choral Showcase

On December 21, the program presents carols and motets from The Choir of Trinity Church Boston, The Bevan Family Consort, The Choir of Christ Church Cathedral Oxford, the RIAS Kammerchor Berlin, and The Gesualdo Six. Closing out the month, the December 28 broadcast o ers performances by ensembles Chanticleer, Stile Antico, The Choir of Westminster Cathedral, and The London Oratory Schola Cantorum. Messiah on NSO Showcase

"Idid think I did see Heaven before me and the great God himself,” Handel confided to his servant after toiling in a windowless room for 24 days to compose Messiah. Each December, NSO Showcase presents a performance of this towering work from the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center. This month’s o ering is from 2022, conducted by the acclaimed early music expert Fabio Biondi. Soloists Liv Redpath, Hannah Ludwig, Matthew Myers and Neal Davies join the Choral Arts Society of Washington for what The Washington Post called an incendiary performance.
