ATX Open is back at Westwood!

One of the four women’s-only tour-level tennis events in the country is bringing the best tennis players in the world to Austin, Texas for the second time. There will be two draws featuring 32 players each for singles and 16 teams each for doubles, featuring top-tier talent. @ATXOpenTennis

Please visit the ‘ATX Open’ tab on our Westwood website or through the Westwood Country Club TX app on your phone for the latest updates throughout the tournament. Parking Westwood members can use the Westwood parking lot from 5:00 am – 8:30 am every day. If parking for Club amenity usage is needed after 8:30 am, limited parking (3 hour time limit) will be available until 10:00 pm near the guard station. If members are attending the tournament, free parking/shuttle service will be available at the designated parking lot off-site to the club. The last shuttle will run one hour after the last match/event Tennis 1/31 – 2/22 Tennis Court availability will vary; please check the online reservation system. 2/23 – 3/6 Westwood members will have exclusive access all day to the following courts: 12, 13, 14, 17, & 18. In addition, courts 1, 3, 4, 8, and 10 will be available from 6:00 am until 8:30 am every day. Lesson programming schedule will be available online. Pickle ball courts will be available only Monday, February 26 through Friday, March 1 from 6:00 am until 9:30 am. There is no way a small boy growing up in Three Rivers, Michigan could have imagined how his life would unfold. No way to predict how a simple passion for tennis would find him 55 years later at the end of the tennis rainbow. This passion allowed his entire collegiate expenses to be paid, which was more than good enough back then – no NIL funding needed or expected. Then, he was able to parlay that passion into a career in tennis. What a dream! All along the way he met people. Relationships grew – some over a span of many years, some more casual. But, the one thing all the relationships had in common was their addiction to tennis. Those People, in their passion, fueled this small-town boy. Throughout his career, each year, every day, his batteries were charged not by tennis, but by the people that surrounded him. Members and staff alike. Those reading this now, know this…your energy charged his, daily. Many of the names were different 40 years ago than the names today, but all were alike in their passion for tennis and the relationships were forged. Batteries charged. The small boy continues to be overwhelmed by the generosity many of his people showed him as his last days grew close. A sendoff that could not have been predicted, and certainly not expected. He is as thankful as he is blessed. Today, he is still that same small-town boy that was oh-so fortunate enough to fall off the pumpkin truck at the 35th Street cul-de-sac 40 years ago, when it was early in his rainbow’s arc.

Our Competitive Junior program is already in full swing. We have lots of new faces moving up from Rec to our 10 and under and 11 and up competitive group. We also had some kids make the leap from the 10 and under group to the 11 and over group. Check out the new junior competitive web page for a more detailed description of our 3 levels of players in the junior comp groups. We also have the Teen 14 and up class for our high school level players. I’m really excited about our junior program. Our spring’s goal is to get more kids excited about the game and start playing USTA level tournament tennis outside of the club environment.

Spring Draft League Registration:

Draft League is a fun, competitive doubles league where the teams battle it out on the court while drinking beer and having a good time. The top 180 players to sign up are drafted onto teams at the start of the season, and the league is divided into two nights: Intermediate (2.5-3.0) and Advanced (3.5 & above). Spring Draft League will start the week after Spring Break, on March 19th and 21st. This season the Intermediate League will be on Tuesday nights at 7pm, with Finals Night on May 14th and the Advanced League will be on Thursday nights at 7pm, with Finals Night on May 16th. Singles Challenge Ladder:

The singles challenge ladder has begun and will run through August 31st. Players may get on or drop off the ladder throughout the year. Our slogan this season is All or Nothing! We want everyone committed to winning for the Waves from Parents, Coaches and Swimmers. Join the Westwood Waves. Again this year, registering for this program is on line. Log on to the Westwood website, sign into your account, choose on the top of the page, select “swimming”, select “Waves Summer Swim Team”. On the middle of that page, under the picture pick, “Click here to join”; this will redirect you to Swimtopia to register.

The Waves are thought of highly in the swimming community and all of you are the reason our team is #1 among country clubs and communities. Our team mixes stroke work with fun social events like a trip to or Laser Tag to create the most amazing team to be a part of. It is where champions are made. Register on line and then packet pick up is March 6th from 5-7 pm, in the Lakeview Café at the pool. On March 6th, you can pick up your Waves packet that includes t-shirt, cap, and or simply meet the coaches and Kelley Newberry, the team president and team representative. Swimmers can enjoy making themselves ice cream sundaes at the build your own ice cream Sundae bar. Stroke Clinic (cost $135 per child per session). When you sign up for the Waves at the above address, you will be allowed to register for a clinic. Open for all swimmers who are REGISTERING for the Waves Swim Team. Clinics meet M-Th afternoons for 2 weeks. Age 5 (non-tennis participants) 3-3:30 pm, Ages 5-8 (Coordinated with tennis participants) 3:30-4 pm, Ages 5-8 4-4:30 pm or 4:30-5 pm, Ages 9 & up 5 5:45 pm. House & Grounds Outdoors at Westwood February: Emergence of Spring… and return of the ATX Open One never knows what February weather will be like in Austin. Last year, the city was hit with a catastrophic ice storm which began the month and balmy t-shirt weather ended it. Typically by the end of February, there are signs that Spring is around the corner. Central Texas is especially lovely in the Spring, and many plants take advantage of the wonderful growing conditions before the blast of the heat and sun of summer. There are a few specific plants that appear early in Texas and are sure signs that Spring is coming. Many will start budding out with delicate green leaves and several plants have blooms that appear before the leaves even bud out. Small trees such as the native Redbuds will bloom delicate pink and the Mexican Plums bloom a big show of white. Texas Mountain Laurels begin to bloom vibrant purple against their dark evergreen leaves and their heady scent perfumes the air. The Bluebonnets develop a beautiful green mound during the winter, and by the end of February, hint at their approaching buds, ushering in the excitement of Spring in Texas. While much of the country still has many months more to go of cold, gray weather, Westwood will be starting to stir with Spring blooms.

This year, Westwood will once again host the ATX Open starting in late February. Westwood is a unique and beautiful venue for an outdoor event, and the ATX Open brings in visitors from all over the country as well as national television coverage. Not only are there many logistics involved to ensure the event runs smoothly and visitors feel welcome but an equally important priority is the protection of Westwood’s trees and the beauty of the grounds.

Last year before the ATX Open, several key areas of the Tennis Center grounds experienced a landscape upgrade. These areas will be refreshed in the coming weeks and a few additional areas will receive their first upgrade. The upgrades include native Texas plantings wherever possible. This strategy really paid off when the flower beds bloomed profusely throughout an exceptionally hot summer. These landscaping upgrades are part of a long-term plan to enhance the Westwood experience and provide enjoyment for Westwood members and guests. Although preparing for the ATX Open has changed the scheduling and priority of these plans, it has not changed what is being done. To protect Westwood’s grounds and landscaping, great care has been taken to put in place requirements and restrictions on its use during any large scale event. Westwood and the ATX Open organizers (DropShot) have developed a specific plan for this event which places administration and logistics on hard surfaces and minimizes traffic on sensitive areas. Several key points that are emphasized: • Administration and storage/logistics for the event will be located on the upper end of the parking lot, which will control and reduce access and traffic across the site. • Trash collection and disposal are re-worked to be more convenient and less visible, and to have minimal impact on the grounds. • There will be strict requirements regarding the treatment of the flower beds and landscaped areas, with regular checks and cleanups. • The grove usage will be very restricted and will be used only for the staging of materials during construction and teardown of the grandstands. Placement of all material will be in areas away from the trees. A temporary road mat will be laid down to protect the area from traffic. There are procedures for preparing the site before, and for additional TLC after the event. Several arborists were consulted to develop the plan and to ensure that the site would not be adversely affected long term. Sharing Westwood and the stirrings of Spring with family, friends and guests is something we all love to do. With these plans in place, Westwood will continue to be lovely and welcoming. The ATX Open is here! We are so excited to be hosting this prestigious event and I personally look forward to seeing all the professional athletes from so many different nationalities ascend on our home. For me getting to watch these players go through their warm ups, stretches, body work and workouts is awe inspiring. Their bodies are their living. They have to treat them like machines. They are regimented on workouts, lessons, when food goes into their body, how much sleep they are supposed to get and so on. It is a full-time job and it amazes me to think what they have to do on a daily basis. ATX Open Fitness Hours from February 23rd through March 3rd Monday through Friday 5am to 8am in the Fitness Facility. 8am to 9:30pm in the LakeView Café.
