A Note from the General Manager... As we bring 2023 to a close, I can’t help but look back on all the exciting moments we experienced and I’m eagerly anticipating the opportunities in 2024. As the year unfolds, I’m confident you will see and experience many enhancements that you and your family can enjoy. We’re ending 2023 and beginning 2024 on a busy note so here’s some information for your review and consideration. First, I would like to invite you to attend our year end update on the evening of January 24th to review and discuss two important items. The club’s annual audit is currently underway and being managed by the firm of Condon O’Meara McGinty and Donnelly LLP. That audit will be completed later this month, and you will have the opportunity to hear the results from that process as presented by one of the firm’s partners. This will be a great chance to gain a better understanding of the club’s financial position. Additionally, as you are aware, and many of you participated in the survey, we are working through an extensive process to develop a comprehensive Strategic Plan for Westwood. This has been an excellent exercise for the Board to work through and will provide a well thought out and structured document to guide our decisions and operating model. We are working with Club Benchmarking on this process, and we expect to have the final product ready for presentation on the evening of the 24th. Please join us if you can and learn more about your club and its exciting future. Second, your Board approved the following additional benefits for our Senior Members Aged 75 or older. These benefits began on December 1st, 2023. For all Membership Types in this class: • No food minimum requirement. • 20% discount on meals (not Holidays). • Waive the December Adult Holiday Party fee. For full and Grandfathered Regular Members in this class: • 20% discount on Athletic classes, clinics (not training or lessons) allowed based on Membership Type rules. The Board is happy to bring these benefits to you and hope you enjoy and take advantage of them. Fourth, and most importantly, this will be the final month that Brian’s will be the Director of Tennis at Westwood Country Club. While I’ve only had the privilege of working with Brian over the past year, in that short time I quickly learned that his love for Westwood Country Club and its membership is unquestioned. Additionally, his dedication to the sport he has spent a lifetime playing, coaching, promoting, and growing is exceptional. We can replace the position but will never replace his legacy. Please make sure and join us for his farewell party on the tennis patio at 6:30pm, December 12th. We will take this opportunity to share stories and enjoy a 40 year walk down Westwood’s tennis memory lane with Brian and his family. The First Timer Tennis Heaven? As the First Timer slowly approaches lower 35th Street (peacock crossing!) she thinks, “Wow, what a beautiful spot here at the end of the road.” At the first speed bump next to the guard house, she is greeted with a huge smile and is ordered to have a great day. She is impressed by the welcome as the guard points her straight ahead to the tennis center. “What a nice greeting that was,” she says to herself. The second speed bump slows her, and immediately looking to the right she asks herself, “Are those clay courts? Wow, they have clay courts here?” Then quickly to her left, through the oaks, she sees the main clubhouse overlooking the pool. “Gorgeous,” she says under her breath. With no parking to be found yet, the third speed bump finds her in front of the Taylor Tennis Center’s front door, and looking straight ahead she observes another beautiful Live Oak stand. But wait, beyond the oaks a court appears - the court she will be playing that day – court 2. “I’ve never seen tennis courts surrounded by trees like this – they seem to embrace the courts,” she proclaims to herself. “I’ll bet the summer shade these trees afford players is priceless,” she adds. Still looking for a parking spot, passing the Little House on her right, she meanders over yet another speed bump and into the back parking lot. “What a quaint cottage – I wonder what its story is?” Finally, she finds a parking spot in the upper lot. “This place is packed - look at all the people playing tennis.” She stands outside of her vehicle and marvels at the front of what was the old McClendon house, ever so gently aged. Finally, with her mind back on tennis, she retraces on foot through the parking lot, and enters the Taylor Tennis Center in awe, “What an awesome facility! It’s huge! Everything here indicates this club is very serious about their tennis. Impressive.” On court 2, she doesn’t have her best day, but no matter. She has been able to soak in the tennis experience that Westwood offers. On the Tennis Center’s back patio, her member-host treats her to a cold beverage. The men at the table next to her are enjoying their cold ones, and they all appear to be having a great time rehashing their match highlights – the good and not so good. Their banter is friendly, and she concludes they are all Old Timers here at the club. “Lucky bums,” she concludes. Finally, it’s time to leave, and as the First Timer thanks her member-host she can’t help but ask her, “Is this Tennis Heaven or what?!” To which her host replies matter-of-factly, “Naw, it’s just Westwood.”

Fitness News First of all, I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who filled out their fitness and aquatics survey. It has been a few years since we have done one and I always appreciate all the feedback, positive or not. I will be going through this with the SwimFit committee to help shape areas of improvement and to use as a guide for the direction our fitness facility needs to go. Shout out to Mary Lamoreux, her class and clients for dressing up for Halloween! They had a blast and she brings so much fun to what she does here. Thanks, Mary, for all you do!
I’d also like to take this time to remind everyone to please rerack your weights after you get done on the plate loaded machines. It’s easy to forget that sometimes the person that might follow you won’t be able to lift as much weight as you did. I’ll steal my inspiration from Blockbuster, so

It’s easy to get lost on our phones in between sets resting on a machine but there are others waiting to get a set in. If you are going to be resting in between exercises please move away from your machine to let someone else work in.

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, January 9, 10, 11 | 9:30 to 11:30 am | For all 2.5 and above levels, run by All the pros. We will begin 2024 with three 2 hour workouts the week of January 8 to get you back on the court and ready for the spring season! Players will be grouped with like ability (level) on a court with one pro. Each class will cover a variety of feeding and live ball drills, games and point play with pros rotating courts between rounds. You will get to hit a little bit of everything to get both you and your game back in shape while mixing it up with different players.

Westwood Waves USA Swimming! 75 swimmers continue to participate in our USA Swim Program in the afternoons. Swimmers have swam this fall in swim meets at the University of Texas Swim Center. We have had 15 swimmers participate. UT has hosted Olympic Trials in the past and several Olympians from the US and other countries have swam in their waters. The Waves thought it was so exciting being in the pool where these big athletes have competed. The kids’ enthusiasm was incredible and most all of the swimmers that participated achieved lifetime best times in those swim events. Also, Westwood hosted a Best Times Swim meet in September, October and November for our team. We invited Austin Country Club, Great Hills Country Club, Westlake (formerly Lost Creek) Country Club, Barton Creek Country Club, Hills of Lakeway Country Club, Westover Hills Club and Western Hills Athletic Club to compete with us at the club. The Waves, all ages, participated in the meet and all of them challenged themselves to racing their team friends and other teams’ swimmers in great spirit and pushed each other to swim fast in the pool. Swim technique looks wonderful and the Waves should be commended for their improvement in the water. Swimmers enjoyed fast swimming, getting best times in their races and savored a spaghetti dinner, cookies and hot chocolate, lemonade and mini pumpkin and pecan pies at swimmers’ socials after the meets. Another Holiday meet will be offered before Christmas on December 14th to celebrate our swimming and the holiday season. See our pictures below.

Westwood Waves – 2024!
In January, look for our on line registration for the Westwood Waves Swim Team program. We are all ready planning this exciting program with our Swim Team President, Kelley Newberry. Our grand slogan for 2024 Is very exciting. ALL OR NOTHING IN ’24! Everyone is getting anxious and all ready asking questions about the swim season in the spring. Our Waves are joining with Austin Country Club, Barton Creek Country Club, Hills of Lakeway Country Club and Westlake Country Club to start a new swim league. We are excited about the opportunity to develop a new swim league and also end our season earlier for vacation and camp purposes. Because we have best team in town, we want all of our families back and challenge you to bring some new families that have not participated to join in on the fun. Stroke Clinics start March 18th, and the Waves program starts April 15th. The season will be here before you know it. The first meet is planned for the end of April our intrasquad and the last meet, IS PLANNED FOR THE WEEK LEADING UP TO FATHER’S DAY, so the season will conclude by June 16th. Calling all Waves of all abilities and all ages! Remember, if we Bring our Best and swim fast, there is no stopping us and we can accomplish anything! Again, All or Nothing in “24.
Open Water Swim Highlights from October 7th!
Organized by Coach Sean and also the Aquatics Team helped with safety out on Lake Austin.
We had our 2nd annual open water swim in Lake Austin. The wind was blowing hard so it made for an adventurous and challenging swim. The swim started at Walsh Landing by Hula Hut and swam along the shoreline to the dock at Westwood. The swim was about 2000 meters and swimmers took between 25 minutes and an hour and 10 minutes to complete the swim. All the swimmers enjoyed brunch on the boat dock after. For support we had 7 kayakers/stand-up paddle boarders and a pontoon boat supplied by Sal Uglietta. The members and staff that provided support helped make the event safe and fun. Shoshana Bohrer, Greg Bow, Nancy Donaldson, Joe Fowler, Mary Kay Gershon, Leslie McConnico, Peggy O’Shaughnessy, Eric Price, Tony Propst, Rick Singleton, Cathy Smith, Bryan St George, Sal Uglietta, and Dana Wills all completed the swim. Thanks to Drake Fason, Ashley Fowler, and Pam Uglietta for helping with the safety team.

Twas Christmas Eve with the Waves! Twas the night before Christmas, by the poolside so cool, The Westwood Waves, all eager and fueled. Their goggles were hung by the water with care, In hopes that Saint Nicholas soon would be there. The swimmers were nestled, snug in their beds, With visions of medals dancing in their heads. Coach by the pool, with a watch in their hand, Guiding young athletes, helping them understand. The moon’s gentle glow on the water so still, Highlighted the dreams of each swimmer’s will. Their dedication and training, through sun and through rain, Would surely lead them to victories, and not in vain. In the Westwood pool, the water shimmered bright, As stars in the sky blinked their own Christmas light. The echo of splashes, the swimmers’ refrain, Their passion and spirit, unbroken by strain. They practiced their strokes, in the clear, chilly air, With a focus and drive that was truly quite rare. The Westwood Waves, a family so tight, Supporting each other through day and through night. As they swam in the pool pool,, beneath the moon’s gleam, They chased after dreams like a beautiful dream. With determination and heart, they’d surely prevail, In their quest for success, they would surely set sail. So, on this Christmas Eve, by the pool’s shimmering blue, Let’s cheer for the Westwood Waves, in all that they do. For in the pool and in life, they give it their all, With hopes of achieving, they’ll stand tall

December: ’Tis the Season - Winter
“I prefer winter and fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape. Something waits beneath it; the whole story doesn’t show.” — Andrew Wyeth (American painter) The fall planting season is wrapping up at Westwood. It’s exciting to see the gardens recovering from the long hot summer… it’s almost like the plants are trying to prove that they survived, with some of them putting on a great show of fall flowers. A long-term program of tree care has begun, including systematic health-centered pruning, and is resulting in more graceful trees and a more open canopy. As winter approaches, it’s interesting to note which plants are evergreen and which are deciduous. Evergreens retain their leaves while deciduous plants will lose their leaves in the winter. When looking around the Westwood gardens, notice that the flower beds consist of varying combinations of both evergreens for year-round green and deciduous plants that provide seasonal interest. A bed that is all evergreens might seem like a great idea, but it doesn’t show the change of seasons, and most importantly, the awakening of buds and flowers in the spring would be completely missed! You might notice various plants that will indicate the change of the seasons. Sometimes it’s a redbud tree that loses its leaves, only to burst out in early spring with delicate purple blooms. Or a River Fern which will almost completely disappear but emerge from the ground in spring as small curling fronds. Even “baby blues” (next Spring’s bluebonnets) are already starting to show up in December. While it’s cold outside and the plants appear to be sleeping, there is actually a lot happening out in nature. Most plants spend their winter dormant state using their energy developing their root systems (instead of supporting leaf and branch growth or blooming). Although the Monarch butterfly is renowned for its migrations, most butterflies overwinter locally in the leaf litter, underground or in the cracks of old wood. Surprisingly, many so-called migratory birds also overwinter, and can be very visible in winter, especially along lakes and rivers.
Remember it’s always a good time to be outdoors at Westwood and Winter has its own special charm. Go hang out by the pool around the fireplace… several events are planned so check your Westwood App for the latest info. Enjoy a drink and conversation after dinner by the firepit. Walk out to the marina deck and watch the wildlife on the lake… they are more visible with the lessened boat activity. Take a stroll along the flowerbed by the tennis courts and enjoy the winter sun. The book “Nature Watch AUSTIN” by Lynne and Jim Weber is an excellent resource for a wide range of nature topics and is very specific to the Austin area. It answers some perplexing questions that you or a curious young mind might have: what berries and fruits are edible? is it a buzzard or a vulture? what is that noise at night? It is organized by months… it would be a great way to start out 2024! Annoucements Newsletter Name Contest Winner Announcement We want to congratulate Chris Epp for sending the first submission for the runner up name. Here are the voting results: There were 349 votes in total, of those voting, 225 voted to keep the same name “The Westwood Way”, followed by 78 votes for “Peacock Post” and 46 votes for “Peacock Press”. Introducing our new Pastry Chef Chef Michaela Arzola joined the Westwood Culinary Team as of September 2023. Originally from the Texas Panhandle, Chef Michaela moved to Austin in the late 2000s to attend Culinary School at Le Cordon Bleu. She has been living in Austin ever since! She is excited to bring a new Pastry program to the Club and has over 15 years of Pastry experience; 9 of those years have been spent in private country clubs. Chef Michaela takes pride in her ability to work directly with members to make their celebrations memorable. One of her goals is to bring more Pastry options to the members of Westwood Country Club with custom cakes, cookies, and petit fours.
