Fall Draft League Finals: In the Advanced League playoffs, 3rd seeded I’d Hit That overcame the odds to pull off a pair of upsets over #2 Servezas and then #1 Hookers to win their 2nd championship in a row. Congratulations to captains Greg Connor & Mark Werner and the rest of the Hitters! In the Intermediate League, it was the end of a tennis dynasty as Serve Me A Double, who had won 5 straight titles, came up short in the semi-final. The final was neck and neck between #1 Sultans of Swing and #3 Tequila Drop Shot, with the match eventually being decided by a tiebreaker won by TDS’s Jeff Edwards & Baron Unbehagen. Congratulations to Tequila Drop Shots and their captains Randy Werhane & Matt Trevena!

Happy New Year to all the Waves families; we are looking forward to a fast year in the water in 2024! Pretty amazing that it’s now 2024 and we have another year of excitement, challenges and progress to plan for in 2024. Given the celebration of a new year, I thought I would talk a bit about setting new years resolution for athletic success. It’s always good to begin the new year with resolutions for healthier sports. Resolution #1: Accept the inevitable ups and downs of your sport. Competitive sports are brutal and tough. One week, you may improve your speed, performance and times, the next week you may add time. Look at the long term goals of what you want to accomplish. Sometimes improvement may happen on several occasions, then you may have a period of no improvement for several weeks/months .be in it for the long haul. Resolution #2: Be Patient. There is no timetable for athletic success. For some, it is quick, for others, it takes much much longer. Not everyone’s goals are the same in the exact amount of time. Beginners may take longer versus more experienced athletes. 90% of success is just showing up don’t get impatient and quit quickly. Resolution #3: Be prepared for every competition. As stated above “90% of success is showing up”. The other 10% of success means showing up prepared. If you are unprepared physically, mentally, or with your equipment, you have virtually no chance of achieving the goals you set for yourself. Preparation is the only chance you have to achieve your goals. Resolution #4: Focus on the process to get results. Don’t focus on the final results; better for you to focus on the entire process to perform your best from the beginning to the end of the competition. When you focus on the process of how to perform your best at a competition, you will likely get the desired results. Resolution #5: Bring it!! When you compete. Enough said! play hard and don’t be afraid to fail if it happens. Give it 100%.
Resolution #6: No regrets at the end of the competition season. Things may not work out the way you wanted, but that is life. Don’t leave it all out there, embrace the opportunity and know you took every shot that presented itself. Here is to a fabulous 2024 full of lots of accomplishments! All families are encouraged to join the year round Waves and get fit in 2024. Jump in the water and get ready for summer league and get a head start on winning while enjoying the spring fun. Exercise greatly reduces the odds of heart disease and other health issues. Don’t wait! Join one of our many aquatics programs and lower your stress. Westwood Waves – 2024! In January, look for our on line registration for the Westwood Waves Swim Team program. We are all ready planning this exciting program with our Swim Team President, Kelley Newberry. Our grand slogan for 2024 Is very exciting. ALL OR NOTHING IN ’24! Everyone is getting anxious and all ready asking questions about the swim season in the spring. Our Waves are joining with Austin Country Club, Barton Creek Country Club, Hills of Lakeway Country Club and Westlake Country Club to start a new swim league. We are excited about the opportunity to develop a new swim league and also end our season earlier for vacation and camp purposes. Because we have best team in town, we want all of our families back and challenge you to bring some new families that have not participated to join in on the fun. Stroke Clinics start March 18th, and the Waves program starts April 15th. The season will be here before you know it. The first meet is planned for the end of April our intrasquad and the last meet, IS PLANNED FOR THE WEEK LEADING UP TO FATHER’S DAY, so the season will conclude by June 16th. Happy New Year!! Welcome to 2024. When I became a parent, I truly understood the meaning behind time flies. Dennis asked me to stay as the Fitness Director for at least five years. This year I will have been at Westwood for 17 years and Director for 14. I mean that meeting seemed like yesterday. I also remember telling Rachel when we had Ryder, “If we can just make it through these sleepless nights, we will survive.” She is now three and a half. Where does this time go. When I think about these things, it reminds me to be present and enjoy every minute of this life I am so fortunate to have. If you are reading this, remember all the things around you that make you happy and are grateful for. Take it all in. Time flies. Winter Preview Week is here. House & Grounds January 2024 Outdoors at Westwood Design, Details, and Data about the McClendon House Landscape Installation Happy 2024! The new year will start with a new landscape around McClendon House. The landscaping plan for McClendon House is a 2-phase plan. Phase 1 of the landscape installation has been completed. It encompassed the gardens immediately around the house and also a major portion of the Bath House Entrance. This is an important time for the establishment of the plants in their new beds. Please be patient as they adjust and grow to their full potential. Phase 2 is planned for the planting season in Fall 2024 and will address the areas adjacent and visible to the house. This will include the area around the Member’s Entrance, the parking lot, and the Little House. There have been lots of positive comments, and also some questions about the recent installation. It’s not designed just to be pretty… although that is certainly an important aspect. There are also a lot of details in the plan that concern budget and maintenance/usage. Westwood’s landscape is intended to be classic, inviting, and lovely. For McClendon House, the overall visual plan emphasizes the importance and architecture of the historic house by using the landscape as a frame and utilizing plants consistent with its time period. The house is located at the back of the property and at the end of a winding drive and parking lot. The design addresses this
by enlarging and uniting all the “grounds” around the house. The beds around the house have been simplified and distractions were removed or minimized. Plantings have been repeatedly massed to create more impact. In phase 1, the expanse between McClendon House and the Bath House was delineated to define a specific large area as part of the house. Those beds were designed to “lead the eye” to the house and define the walkway as an entrance to the house. The beds around the porte cochère entrance and in the courtyard were designed to be viewed from many different points. The courtyard design emphasizes the special moment of entering the old house. Of course, the budget was a critical factor in the design. Landscaping can be very expensive, with major cost components being materials and labor. Design decisions were made that reuse appropriate existing items in the landscape, both hardscape material and plants. Rocks for retaining walls and drainage areas were repurposed from other areas on-site. Many plants were moved to the new beds from other locations on the property (like Liriope, Mondo Grass and Texas Spider Lilies, for example). Quite a few of the “historically correct” plants were donated (like Daylilies, Iris, Chinese Ground Orchids and Narcissus). Plants purchased were either at wholesale or discounted prices. Labor can be a large cost, but Westwood is fortunate to have a talented grounds crew which was utilized extensively, and they worked this into their already busy schedule. Designing for long-term maintenance and usage is also important. Because Westwood has 1500 memberships, which easily translates to over 4000 active members. On an average day,
500-1000 people visit and use the facilities. Special events such as weddings, annual and private parties, swim and tennis events bring many more people to Westwood. This can lead to a lot of wear and tear on a landscape. The majority of the new design consists of hardy, dependable plants that will continue to grow and become more established over time and will require minimal maintenance. A few very small, but important, planting beds were designed to be refreshed over the year with color plants. These beds require more maintenance but emphasize and link certain highly visible areas, such as the entrances. The irrigation system was extensively updated, and many beds were converted from sprinklers to drip. Please help keep the landscaping in good shape by staying on the sidewalks and especially out of the formal beds.
House Entrance and to delineate McClendon House grounds). • Collected bull rock from scattered beds to create a water collection area in front of the Bath House Entrance and reduce runoff into the pool area. • Spread 48 cubic yards of high-compost topsoil to aid the recovery from years of erosion and create a foundation for planting (some soil was also installed in the Grove). • Installed 19 pallets of grass in the Bath House Entrance area and the Grove, and also spread 300 pounds of rye-grass seed. • Replanted the newly defined grounds at the south entrance to McClendon house.
A frequent question related to maintenance is about the restored lawn in front of the Bath House, which creates a park-like setting under the oak trees. A commonly heard question is, “Will the grass grow?”. Much has been done this Fall to give it a good chance: the tree canopy has been cleaned up to allow for more sunlight, high organic-content topsoil has been added, and terracing has been improved so that water will soak in, which will reduce erosion. Not all of the grass will make it, most likely. But where the grass doesn’t do well, those areas will be converted to shade-loving plant beds.

As a wrap-up, many people have been involved in this landscaping project. The House and Grounds Crew, volunteers, and members who have stopped to comment and share ideas… all have worked together. Keep your eyes open as the unfolding of these efforts begins to show as Spring arrives. The outdoor beauty of Westwood is truly special, so enjoy!

In the case of the circle bed in front of the porte cochère, it was also critical to lower the soil level and expose the root flare for the health of the oak tree. The rocks from these walls were re-used in the construction of retaining walls. • Replanted the beds ringing the house and the courtyard beds.
