Family activities of carnival-goers. 9 Saint-Eloi church One of the city’s most beautiful buildings, building works on this flamboyant Gothic-style church were started in the XVIth century. Its neo-Gothic façade dates back to 1894. The church’s chancel houses the tomb of Jean Bart. 10 Jean Bart statue Place Jean Bart. In Dunkerque’s historical centre, the former Royale Square designed by Vauban in 1845 is the home of sculptor David D’Angers’ statue representing Jean Bart, the famous dunkerquois privateer knighted by Louis XIV. 11 The «petite Chapelle Notre Dame des Dunes» A small statue of the miraculous Virgin was discovered during the construction of the fortifications in 1403.
