It’s a big year—West Shore Parks & Rec is celebrating 60 years of community recreation on the Westshore! In 1966, the original Juan de Fuca Parks and Recreation Commission was formed, leading to the lease of DND land where the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre now sits. This year also marks 25 years since the new pool and weightroom opened. As we celebrate these milestones, we’re taking a deep dive into where we’ve been while looking ahead to what’s next.
The 80s were all about energy, colour and community. Aerobics classes, roller rinks, lively swim lessons and bright, upbeat spaces made recreation centres the heart of local connection. This guide season celebrates how recreation helped shape a lasting sense of belonging.
GUIDE SEASON January - April
In the 90s, recreation grew with our communities. Team sports thrived, family programs expanded and after‑school activities kept centres buzzing with play and participation. It was a decade defined by showing up, trying new things and enjoying the simple joy of moving together.
The 2000s brought a wave of innovation, blending technology with community. Online registration, new fitness trends and flexible program formats made recreation more accessible than ever. Technology enhanced in‑person experiences, changing how we connect and stay active.
GUIDE SEASON May - August GUIDE SEASON September - December
We welcome any stories, memories, artifacts and images you may have that celebrate your history and relationship with West Shore Recreation.

We’d love to hear it all. All contributors will be entered to win a grand prize of a WSPR 12-Month Membership, to be awarded in fall 2026 in conjunction with our 60th birthday celebration!
Join us this year for the fun themed events, throw back pricing and activations that celebrate the last 60 years. WSPR will be hosting a number of activities throughout the facility so stay tuned and sign up for our newsletter through your account at explore.wspr.ca
