Ports & Maritime
Ports and harbour infrastructure are essential in shaping urban growth and driving economic development. We approach the masterplanning of harbourside precincts with analytical precision and creative vision. We transform waterfronts into vibrant, sustainable, and integrated parts of the urban fabric. Our regenerative design approach focuses on improving water quality, enhancing marine biodiversity, and improving overall ecosystem health. We understand the challenges associated with maritime operations and engineering. In these ever-changing conditions our designs prioritise complete vessel control, efficient and secure staff operations, and the safety and comfort of passengers. Through careful spatial planning of operational zones, gangways and gatelines, we ensure a smooth and clear passenger flow, avoiding any crossovers. Structures in maritime environments are constantly exposed to harsh conditions to address these challenges, we design with durability and resilience, ensuring long-term safety and functionality of these structures. This is important to minimise ongoing maintenance where access can be challenging over a live water’s edge.

Masterplanning
Our water-orientated masterplanning work ranges from port and harbour led transit-orientated developments and small scale maritime schemes, through to the incorporation and enhancement of waterways and blue infrastructure into our clients’ visions. Combining expertise from across our practice we have delivered mixed-use masterplans, including industrial led scheme based around commercial ports, and residential and commercial development around passenger facilities and waterways. We always work closely with local stakeholders and communities to create masterplans that are deliverable and sustainable, recognising the importance of the global maritime industry

Ports Lands Acceleration Initiative The Port Lands Acceleration Initiative is a development and implementation plan that will deliver a high-level road map for accelerating development and maximising the value of the Port Lands; a unique and valuable asset for the City of Toronto. The Port Lands Acceleration Initiative delivered a financially viable strategy for implementation, enabling the City to realise the full potential of the site. We delivered: •
Concept plans for the entirety of the Port Lands Study Area (including flood protection options) used to evaluate the quality of potential development scenarios, their associated infrastructure requirements and anticipated capital costs.
•
Development and phasing scenarios that coordinated costs, flood protection initiatives, infrastructure and transit phasing options, and high quality public realm and urban forms.
•
The identification of a preferred river alignment, urban structure, and phasing strategy, and refinements to the plans to ensure the integration of high quality public open spaces, aquatic and terrestrial habitats, active transportation, and transit phasing.
•
A preliminary ‘business strategy’ and an overall inventory of infrastructure requirements.

Salinas Natural Reserve Park The Salinas Bahamas is a 10,000-acre site located on the southwest, leeward coast of Long Island, Bahamas. The project introduces a new model of “systems-based regenerative design” for the Salinas and is committed to reversing decades of damage from industrial use while empowering ecosystems to flourish alongside humankind. The Salinas aims to be the first sustainable community that simultaneously integrates and improves its surroundings by setting a new precedent in responsibly developing destinations based on site ecology, dedicating land to conservation, restoration, research, and site remediation while engaging the local community. The new development for the Salinas Bahamas is anchored by world-class programming that includes three marinas and over 400 residential lots. Other functions include research facilities, boutique hotels, beach clubs, spa and wellness centres, residential amenity islands, restaurants, bars and shops. The shifting relationship between landform and water is the essence of the project. The restoration proposal is premised on the idea of opening the land back up to the natural forces that once defined it. Given the intersecting biodiversity and climate crises, an opportunity to re-establish natural systems while creating models for carbon sequestration and habitat restoration are pursued as critical contributions. This project is an excellent example of where site and landscape truly drive design development.

Terminal & Port Building Design With 40 years of transportation expertise we have designed and delivered award winning buildings that combine operational functionality with high-quality design. Our work spans small scale ferry terminals to large passenger terminals and port structures. With our transit expertise we consider not just the immediate building but also how it integrates with other onward transport modes, and the urban environment. Building adjacent to or on water creates a unique opportunity to celebrate and enhance waterside activity, while also addressing the complexities of these locations.

Lagos Ferry Terminal
The aim of the WIDE-LAG projects is to improve sustainable mobility and quality of life in Lagos through the development of a public waterways-mass transportation system. We prepared designs for 25 terminals connecting different areas of the city. A line-wide identify and standardisation was developed to create a sense of unity within the system, and support deliverability. Each terminal is created to integrate with existing urban areas and other transport modes.

Reinterpreting the iconic form of a Lakeland boathouse the design sensitively positions itself within the landscape, successfully combining both functionality and form. Over time the natural finishes of the materials, including the untreated cedar on the main body of the clubhouse, will enable the building to soften overtime and integrate fully within the surroundings.

Marine Terminal Property The “Marine Terminal Property” site currently contains an array of active port, industrial, and storage uses and required a comprehensive development framework to revitalise the site and deliver value for money for PortsToronto. The site-specific framework document provides a tactical guide to incrementally densifying the property. It includes a new site grid which is intended to inform lease boundaries in the near term that will allow for the laying down of streets and infrastructure as the site matures. It includes principles and instructions on preferred approach to built form that maximises adaptability, flexibility and promotes design excellence. A design parameters document was developed which codified many of the leasing framework’s ideas and recommendations into a design scorecard intended to both focus proponents designs without compromising individual expression and design excellence and provided PortsToronto a basis in which to evaluate future proposals.
