Role Technical Advisory Lead Architect
The HSR network aimed to enhance connectivity between urban and regional communities, unlock growth, improve housing affordability, increase productivity, and improve access to services. Our involvement leveraged our extensive experience in HSR projects and master planning, supporting the successful delivery of the Business Case. We served as the lead architect for Technical Advisory, Environment & Sustainability, Community & Stakeholder Engagement Services (TAESCS) package. The architectural and landscape scope covered benchmarking, station and alignment assessments, and design for stations, interchanges, precincts, and key structures. Our approach emphasised a cohesive, customer-focused design language across all assets, extending beyond stations to route-wide elements, ensuring consistency, adaptability to local contexts, and a seamless passenger experience.

Forming part of The UK’s High Speed 2 new rail network, the landscape is designed to help the 400meter long Burton Green Tunnel blend into the new natural landscapes. The design restitches the landscape disrupted by the construction, restoring the original route of the Kenilworth Greenway, which will now run across the top of the tunnel. An elevated topography of bunds has been used to create landscaped places of distinct character. Large-scale planting of native trees and shrubs will provide biodiverse habitats for wildlife, shield the Greenway visibility from the new railway, and re-establish vegetated connections to local woods.

Transit-Oriented Development High Speed Rail can provide the ultimate in Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), creating and connecting new high-density, mixed-use communities supported by an integrated transit network. We set the frameworks for TOD delivery, understanding how this funds infrastructure growth, and offers a phased delivery model. Our approach means that we look beyond the station building, the rail line, or even the site-boundary to analyse and understand the whole surrounding area the project sits within. From the ecology; its topography, geology, hydrology and landscape; to the urban impacts such as movement networks, built form, financial and social hubs. All these impact the project be it the massing and siting, the character and expression, the environmental response and the movement and accommodation of people to create positive investment into the community.

The introduction of High Speed Rail transforms 805 hectares of underutilised farmland into an innovation development corridor, with a new station integrated seamlessly within this corridor masterplan. Spanning 7 km, the corridor is more than a rail alignment, it becomes a civic and ecological spine that weaves through public and private domains. Landscape-led interventions create shared, flexible spaces between institutional, commercial, and industrial uses, avoiding the pitfalls of traditional, siloed development. The design aims to preserve natural systems while supporting economic growth.

The idea of the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High Speed Rail was initiated through the Economic Transformation Programme to transform Malaysia into a high-income nation, offering an alternative travel mode between two of Southeast Asia’s most vibrant and fast-growing economic engines. The connectivity will enable businesses to be more productive and access a broader market place, while the public will enjoy an improved travel experience of shorter travel time and a comfortable ride, through the city centre to city centre connection along the corridor. This is more than just a transportation project – it is an impetus towards socio-economic development in Kuala Lumpur and the intermediate cities along the HSR corridor, starting with economic clusters centred around each station. This will ultimately change how people live, work and travel entirely.

As we strive for precision and quality, we utilise leading technology to achieve this efficiently and accurately. We use Building Information Modelling (BIM) in Revit and BIM 360 to ensure the design is wellunderstood and composed carefully and coordinated. We use fluid modelling and parametric software like Rhino and Grasshopper to reduce manual workflows, for optioneering and to find accurate answers to complex problems. We use Geographical Information System (GIS) mapping to understand data and to inform design inputs. All these systems allow us to provide the necessary quality assurance while enhance our design workflows and collaboration.
