Brandon Regatta Set To Return Historic West Kerry Regatta returns to Brandon Pier on Sunday, 23 August
Brandon Regatta will return to Brandon Pier (Cé Bhréanainn) on Sunday, 23 August, marking the comeback of one of West Kerry’s most cherished community events. Set against the spectacular backdrop of Brandon Bay, the regatta celebrates the area’s rich coastal heritage and will bring locals and visitors together for an afternoon of competition, community spirit and end-of-summer celebration. Traditional naomhóg racing will be at the heart of the day, with youth and adult crews taking to the water from 1pm as long-standing local rivalries are renewed in Brandon Bay. Alongside the racing, visitors can enjoy family activities including a bouncy castle and face painting. The Irish Coast Guard is also expected to visit, giving spectators the chance to meet the crew and learn more about their vital work. Music will continue that evening at Murphy’s Bar, Brandon. Local volunteer, Pádraig Murphy said: “Brandon Regatta has always been about more than racing. It is a celebration of our community’s long connection to the sea and a day for families, neighbours and friends to come together at the end of Summer. We look forward to welcoming everyone to Brandon for what promises to be a great day.” Brandon Regatta takes place from 1pm on Sunday, 23 August at Brandon Pier (Cé Bhréanainn). Admission is free, and all are welcome. Further programme updates will be shared on Brandon Regatta’s social media channels in the coming weeks.

The Fifth Season: A Time to Gather Irene Flannery
For almost all of human history, eating involved considerably more participation than opening a packet. Food was grown, gathered, caught, cooked, preserved and shared, and the success or failure of those activities had a direct bearing on survival. Nobody is suggesting a return to food scarcity or spending August tied to a threshing machine, but maybe something less obvious disappeared when we outsourced feeding ourselves. There may be no study showing that making a pot of blackberry jam sends an ancient message to the brain saying, “Relax, winter is sorted,” but the idea may not be as far-fetched as it sounds. A sense of control, preparedness and the ability to care for ourselves are all associated with better responses to stress, while cooking and other hands-on food activities can build confidence and wellbeing. Perhaps feeding ourselves, quite literally, is one of the ways we remind the body that we are cared for and that, for now at least, there is enough.
Four seasons seems like a perfectly sensible arrangement for the year. Spring brings new growth, summer the long evenings, autumn gathers everything up before winter sends us indoors again. Neat, tidy and easy enough to fit on a calendar. Vivaldi also gave us four seasons and nobody has complained much since, although some might argue he stopped composing a season or two too soon. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) recognises a fifth season, Late Summer, between the expansive energy of summer and the quieter, inward movement of autumn. The Nyoongar people of south-west Australia go further again, recognising six seasons according to what is happening in nature, from flowering plants and changing winds to the behaviour of birds and animals. Late summer certainly has a character of its own. The frantic growing of spring and early summer begins to slow, seeds ripen, apples grow heavy on branches and hedgerows start earning their keep with blackberries, rosehips and elderberries. Nature has stopped showing off and is getting down to the serious business of making sure there will be another year. In TCM, this fifth season is associated with nourishment, digestion and, interestingly, the emotion of worry. It would be a bit of a stretch to say that modern science confirms those associations, but the old observations become more interesting when we consider just how sensitive the human body is to season. A large study published in Nature Communications in 2015 found seasonal variation in thousands of human genes, including those involved in immunity and inflammation. Light also regulates our circadian rhythm, sleep, hormones and mood. We may have electric lights, central heating and strawberries in December, but the body still seems to know roughly what time of year it is. Our ancestors certainly knew; they had little choice. Here in Ireland, Lúnasa marked the beginning of the harvest season, when the whole family and often the wider community became involved in bringing food in. The final sheaf of corn, sometimes known as the cailleach, had its own ceremony and could be decorated and hung above the table for the harvest meal, one of many traditions marking the crucial moment when abundance had to be gathered before the weather changed. What could be eaten fresh was eaten, while the rest was dried, salted, fermented or otherwise persuaded to hang around until winter. Nobody called it seasonal wellness or posted their ferments on Instagram; squirreling away food simply meant having something to eat several months later. There must have been enormous reassurance in seeing that work completed. A full grain store, baskets of apples, vegetables in the ground and food preserved for winter were not symbols of security, they actually were security. Perhaps that is where the old association between late summer and worry becomes interesting: when the harvest was safely gathered, had one of the season’s greatest worries also been put to rest? Which raises an interesting question for modern life. Most of us now have access to more food than any generation before us, with supermarkets offering everything from Peruvian grapes to Moroccan blueberries in the middle of February. Yet access to food is not necessarily the same thing as having a relationship with food, and that distinction may matter more to our health and wellbeing than we realise. Growing, preparing and sharing food gives us movement, connection, practical skills, sensory pleasure and a sense of agency around one of our most basic needs; simply having food within reach does not necessarily provide any of those things. 6 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
Gardening may offer one clue as to why. An umbrella review published in 2024 looked at 40 studies and found an overall positive effect of gardening on wellbeing, mental health and quality of life, likely through a combination of physical activity, contact with nature, a sense of purpose and achievement and, presumably, the considerable satisfaction of finally eating something before the slugs do. The old practice of fermentation has acquired some modern scientific backing too. In a Stanford study published in Cell in 2021, people eating a diet rich in fermented foods for ten weeks increased the diversity of their gut microbiome and showed reductions in several markers of inflammation. Sauerkraut makers throughout history can consider themselves retrospectively vindicated. This is a useful reminder that food has always been more than protein, carbohydrate, fat, vitamins and minerals. Its structure, fibre, microbes, preparation and degree of processing influence how we digest and respond to it. The act of sourcing, preparing and eating food also connects us to place, people and season in ways that are much harder to measure. Preparing for winter does not require a pantry lined with preserving jars or an emergency crop of turnips. It might mean getting outside while the light is still generous, picking blackberries, freezing herbs, stewing apples, cooking more often or making something now that will be welcome on a dark evening later. Our ancestors did these things because survival depended upon them; thankfully ours usually does not. Yet after hundreds of thousands of years in which food, light, weather and season shaped almost every aspect of human life, it might be premature to assume that a few decades of supermarkets, central heating and next-day delivery have made us entirely independent of those rhythms. The principle of preparing for the darker months still makes sense, whether that means putting food by or, in a more modern way, making sure vitamin D is on the radar now, and supplementing appropriately before winter has a chance to run levels too low. The fifth season may not officially exist on our calendars, but really, that hardly matters. Nature seems to recognise the turning point perfectly well and, every August, quietly begins gathering itself in. Maybe we should take the hint. Once Upon a Time in the Southwest Ted Creedon 38 Fishermen Fight for Life -Kerry Evening Post 09 October 1895 Last week two fishing boats from Portmagee and two from Valentia Island, with a total of 38 men between them, set off to engage in fishing in the immediate vicinity of the Skellig Rock. It was a fine morning, the sea was dead calm, perfect for fishing and in a relatively short time the four boats had secured more than 6,000 fish. However, in less time than it takes to relate their story a storm of unprecedented violence, accompanied by a fearsome deluge of rain threatened to swamp the four boats. The fishermen wasted no time before they jettisoned the fish. They then began bailing the boats before being swamped by the incessant heavy rainfall. The terror-stricken men, while baling out the tremendous downpour, wondered if they would be able to survive the ferocious storm. Nonetheless, they were determined to reach the safety of the mainland by remaining calm and focussed. Eventually, with skilful seamanship and a desperate struggle they effected a landing at Boat Cove (Glen), in a totally exhausted condition.
Castlegregory Fires -Kerry News 15 February 1895 At about I o’clock on Monday afternoon a fire broke out in the boys’ rooms of the Castlegregory National School, which threatened to reduce the building to ashes. However, the quick thinking of one of the teachers, named Flynn, prevented the destruction of the building. He made his way to the top of the structure and succeeded in preventing the timbers from taking fire. It was two hours before the blaze was brought fully under control. Not much damage was reported. (The article lacks clarity – what started the fire? How did the teacher prevent the timbers from taking fire?) A few evenings ago, a fire was discovered to have broken out in the house of the late Dr. J. Busteed in Castlegregory. It is reported that Miss Busteed, who is unable to move from her chair due to paralysis, pulled out a chip from the fire which ignited the bed and the bedclothes. Several people became aware of the fire when attracted by the smoke. They rushed in and pulled Miss Busteed from the flames. However, the overall damage was slight.
Rescued in Dingle Harbour -Kerry Reporter 15 September 1894 Last Friday evening while dock workers were unloading goods and various materials from the Clyde steamship Valentia, at the pier in Dingle, one of the workers, named John Scanlon, lost his balance and plunged into the water. A schooner, named Fancy of Glasgow, was tied up nearby and its captain jumped into the water after the worker. Were it not for his efforts Scanlon, who 8 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
sank twice, would have been drowned. (The Scottish Clyde Steamship Company was operating 15 coasters and 25 tugs in 1894. It also had two deep-sea tramp steamers, mainly for foreign trade including islands in the Pacific, according to company records. Dingle was a regular port of call along with other Irish ports.)
Head Constable Downes stated he saw the marks and told the child to go to a doctor. He came to the barracks and made a statement. Further evidence having been heard the Chairman of the Petty Sessions, G. Maguire, stated that the dog was not dangerous and the summons was dismissed.
Serious Accident near Blennerville
Arrested for Drilling
-Kerry News 09 July 1895 While driving in a pony and trap on the left bank of the Tralee Canal, below the drawbridge at Blennerville, on Friday night, Mrs. Hill, wife of Mister William Hill, met with an accident which might have resulted in a fatality but for her presence of mind. Mrs. Hill was driving the pony and had a female servant in the trap with her. About halfway between the bridge and the Lock House the pony shied, and had no difficulty in backing into the canal, as it is wholly unprotected at that location. Before the trap got into the canal Mrs. Hill jumped out and escaped with a shaking. However, the servant and the pony and trap ended up in the water. After a few minutes the servant was rescued by a young man named Moriarty, who is an assistant national schoolteacher in Blennerville. She was unconscious when brought to the bank but recovered somewhat shortly after. The pony, which was a valuable one, and only in Mrs. Hill possession since the last Limerick Horse Fair, was drowned. The trap was not damaged.
Dingle Petty Sessions -Kerry News 06 December 1916 At Dingle Petty Sessions Patrick Fitzgerald summoned Patrick Connor, regarding a dangerous dog, Connor’s property, which plaintiff alleged bit a child of his under 14 years of age. Fitzgerald asked for an order of Court to have the dog destroyed. Mr. Murphy and a Doctor were engaged in the case.
-Kerry News 20 May 1918 The Seabhac (Patrick Sugrue), an Irish teacher in Dingle, who had been released only a week ago for drilling, was arrested on a train from Dingle. Michael Fleming from Tralee, who was recently released from prison for drilling was arrested on Saturday evening by a large force of Constabulary. When a search of his house was made for arms, none were found. Mr. P. J. Cahill, also of Tralee, was not at home when the police called to arrest him at about the same time as Fleming’s arrest.

Dingle Notes Richie Williams DINGLE REGATTA. The Annual Dingle Regatta which has grown into a two day event is scheduled for this weekend August 15th and 16th. The Saturday programme consists of naomhog races for youth ranging from under 12s to under 18s and starts at 2pm. Sunday's programme, also starting at 2pm, is primarily for adult competitors with opportunities for those who never rowed before to try their hand in a novelty shortened course and has usually proved a popular experience for the brave contestants. So come along this weekend to the pier and cheer on air the local teams not forgetting the visiting crews also. The Regatta and the Races were for many years the main weekends of the year here in Dingle and now how things have changed with something happening almost every weekend in recent times. DINGLE RACES. Despite the weatherman's best efforts on Sunday afternoon the Annual 3 Day Dingle Races passed off without even a shower of rain last weekend. A huge number of horses and ponies took part with many featuring on a number of races over different distances on the infamous Ballintaggart Track. The racing visitors really bring a special atromphere to the area and seem to fit in easily with the local enthusiasts who they have got to know personally and are made very welcome too. Congratulations to the local racing committee and volunteers who ensure the smooth running and continued success of such a major event on the racing and social calendar. For the record the Donegal trained horse Tommy K won the feature race The Dingle Derby this year.

SPORT. Congratulations the the management, players and panel members of the Kerry Ladies Senior Football team on the sporting manner in which they accepted some tough decisions resulting in defeat to Galway in the All Ireland Final this year. No doubt they are a credit to themselves, their clubs and their families and an admirable example to all their young supporters on how to handle both success and defeat in whatever manner it comes both on and off the sporting arenas. TIDY TOWNS. Work Evenings continue on Mondays, meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7pm. A recent increase in the amount of litter being disposed of in our lanes and side streets is a worrying trend as most contains household waste and fast food surplus. We appeal to all outlets offering accommodation to visitors especially self catering units to ensure proper waste disposal bins and instructions are always supplied in their premises in advance of guests arrival. TAP DANCE FESTIVAL. The Shantalliv Tap Dance Festival takes place from Friday August 28th to Sunday 30th this year. Beginners are welcome to try this percussion dance for all ages . On Sunday 30th a special Tap Dance Showcase will be held in Siamsa Tíre at 7pm featuring international world class professionals as well as talented locals from Kerry Tap Ensemble dancers. Queen Victoria’s Viceroy Of Ireland Visits Dingle Railway Station: A Glimpse Of The British Empire Dan Graham
described as an appeasing tour to ease conflict and received much publicity in the local press.
Today, when entering Dingle town on the lefthand side at the roundabout on the Mail Road, one observes the defunct station house complex of the narrow-gauge Tralee and Dingle Light Railway (TDLR) terminus, now the funeral home of Mr. Donal O’Connor.
The tour party was led by Lord Haughton in his role as Viceroy to Ireland. The travelling party arrived at Carrigaholt, Co Clare on the Royal Navy paddle steamer packet SS Enchantress. They continued via Tarbert taking the Listowel Train to Tralee whilst attending functions along the way.
The railway was 51km long running between Tralee and Dingle with a 10km branch to the Castlegregory spur in County Kerry. Initially, sanctioned by the Privy Council of Ireland in 1884 and eventually closing in 1953. The purpose of the line was to support the development of commerce and local industry. Unfortunately, the TDLR was a loss-making enterprise which brought many characters and government officials to Dingle. One important, though less well-known visitor was the then Viceroy of Ireland-Robert Offley Ashburton Crew Milnes or officially titled Lord Haughton who came with a party of government officials to Dingle in June 1893.
A specially designated TDLR carriage conveyed the party to the Dingle railway station terminus. Here the Viceroy alighted on the platform on the 29th June 1893. A large crowd of local dignitaries and towns people congregated on the platform under the watchful eye of the resident Royal Irish Constabulary Force led by the local District Inspector Thomas Lowndes and Head Constable Peter Roe. Dingle had prepared well for this unique occasion. The flags of the Empire were raised at the Royal Irish Constabulary Barracks on Bridge Street and at British institutions in the town.
The Dingle Railway Station was a three-story brick structure extending over a single canopy which closely followed a late Victorian railway construction design. The traditional layout was broadly based around the needs of the passengers and goods allowing the transfer of local materials. There was a water tower, waiting room, ticket office, goods shed and office. It was built by the Dublin contractor and architect Robert Worthington (1843 - 1922) and was called the Western Rail terminus of the British Empire’ and looked pristine for the visitors. The welcoming party waiting on the railway platform included the Station Master Daniel James O’Connor of Listowel (1842-1898), Mr. Richard Adkins Parkes of Cork (1853-1913), Manager of TDLR, Thady Devane linesman and signal man and the station porter Mr. Thomas Duckham of Devon England, retired coast guard officer. Some members of the welcoming party wore pristine uniforms with shining brass buttons and boots while local clergy and officials too looked their best. However, the nationalist

Lord Houghton, Viceroy of Ireland Robrt Milnes was a liberal Member of Parliament for the Crewe constituency and an ally of W.E. Gladstone, Prime Minister. Milnes reward for his service and loyalty was elevation as Lord Haughton and subsequent appointment as Lord Lieutenant, Viceroy of Ireland. Lord Haughton had no great political ambitions and was described as a safe pair of hands in government circles. He was known as a scholar and a wit, and not as a man of action who had not visited County Kerry since 1872. Therefore, it was considered prudent for Lord Houghton to visit distant parts of Ireland during a time of political unrest as the Home Rule crisis and Land Agitation intensified. Canon O’Sullivan, Parish Priest of Dingle was noticeably absent from the event. After the mandatory formal welcome addresses to Lord Haughton, Mr. Thomas O’ Donoghue local businessman and representative for the town community made some robust comments on the plight and poverty of local ratepayers and citizens. Mr. O Donoghue spoke about the plight of tenant farmers and the search for Home Rule. Once formalities were completed the crowd dispersed and the fourth Baron Lord Ventry, Dingle’s main landlord – Frederick Eveliegh de Moleyns, escorted his guests by carriage to his nearby residence at Burnham House for refreshments. The editorial of the Kerry Sentinel, reported on the ‘fuss and flunkeyism’ of the whole event. Following refreshments the party boarded the steamer SS Enchantress at Dingle pier and continued their onward journey to Cahersiveen to Valentia and beyond. For the people of Dingle, the fleeting visit was described as a historical and momentous day. A glimpse
of the British Empire had passed their way. The Dingle railway station reverted back to the daily work of commerce. What of the lives of the immediate Dingle railway officials? Mr. Daniel James O’Connor, first station master died at his Strand street residence in 1898, aged 56 years while Mr. Thomas Duckham railway porter, lived in Dingle until his death in 1919, aged 79 years. Mr. Richard Parkes, General manger emigrated to Canada. Interestingly, Mr. Parkes and his family were booked to travel of the maiden voyage of the SS Titanic and fortuitously, they missed their connection and travelled at a later date. Eventually he continued his career in railway management and died in Montreal in 1913. The central dignitary Lord Houghton later became Secretary of State for India in 1910 and was appointed as his majesty’s ambassador to France 1922-1925. Lord Houghton was described as a Victorian by character, life and outlook and died peacefully aged 87 years in Surrey, England on the 20th June 1945.
It was a day in the life of Dingle railway station offering a snapshot of the power and the grandeur of the British empire which controlled a third of the then known world. Right now I’m editing a series for Channel 4 with Element pictures called Close to Home which stars Anthony Boyle and should be out next year. On the screenwriting front my latest short film An Mháthair just premiered at the Fleadh up in Galway and hopefully I’ll get a chance to screen it at Féile Scannán an Daingin. Next up I’m writing a script for a horror/comedy “Gaelgore” which should be great fun. What job(s) are you most proud of? Editing is a strange one because often the jobs you are most proud of are ones that required a massive amount of work just to get them up to a reasonable standard and there’s immense pride in that. Making great rushes into something even better is a lot easier than finding a bit of gold in rushes that need a lot of work. I’ll always be massively proud of the work I did editing Red Rock as the time and budget pressures were so intense. Screenwriting wise An Mháthair is definitely something I’m really proud of and can’t wait to share. What’s your process? How do you get into a role/project and how do you work? It’s script script script. Editing is the final re-write of the script so you really need to understand what the intention is behind every scene. Then when you are writing your own stuff, ideas are easy but they are nothing without a great script. What advice would you give to anyone wanting to get into the film industry? (or best advice you got?) Foghlaim Gaeilge. I owe my whole career to my Gaeilge and it’s the first thing I would say to anyone. 3 must-see films for anyone interested in filmmaking and why? Lord of the Rings trilogy and all the behind the scenes docs. It’s such a great way to understand the huge scope of jobs in the industry. Tell us about yourself I’m a Dingle based screenwriter and film editor who moved down to the peninsula eight years ago to work with Aniar TV. I have over twenty year’s experience editing everything from feature films to documentary series. As a screenwriter I have had two successful short films produced and have received development funding for two feature films. How did you get into the film industry? I studied communications trí Ghaeilge in Galway. This led me to a job in Ros na Rún which started me in the edit suite.

What inspired you to want to work in film? (film, tv programme, actor, etc.) and what inspires/motivates you from day to day in your work? I think I’ve always been fascinated by how it all worked. Definitely seeing Indiana Jones or Jurassic park as a child really blew my mind and then when I was slightly older seeing Cracker on TV really grabbed my attention. I think the goal then is always to make people feel what you felt when you watched those films or series What was your first job in film and what have you worked on since? My first job was with Ros na Rún as a stage co-ordiantor (Third AD) which I was absolutely TERRIBLE at. Luckily a job opened up with the editorial department and a dark room away from people suited me so much better. I went on to edit Ros na Rún for a few years before moving on to other drama series like Red Rock and The Night Caller as well as cutting the feature film Mandrake. Most of my work has been cutting documentary series for TG4 and have done a lot of work for Aniar here in Dingle which I’m really proud of. In 2016 I studied screenwriting in Dun Laoighre and have had two short films produced Scríofa Sna Réaltaí in 2024 and An Mháthair this year.

A Celebration of the Life of Denis Sugrue 22 August, 8pm - 9:30pm Milltown Community Hall Chapel Lane, Milltown, County Kerry V93 ET62 The first ever publication to delve into the history of Milltown in County Kerry is to be republished on the fortieth anniversary of the death of its author. "Milltown: Memories of Other Days" was written and published by Denis Sugrue who died in 1986 and whose book, which is now out of print, is being reproduced by the Milltown History and Heritage Society. The newly updated and revised fortieth anniversary edition will be launched at Milltown Community Hall on Saturday 22 August at 8.00pm to coincide with National Heritage Week. Denis Sugrue was a well-known auctioneer, librarian, photographer and historian whose book contained a range of stories and anecdotes about the history and heritage of Milltown. He was also the author of the weekly Milltown Notes in The Kerryman newspaper for nearly forty years and the organisers of the launch have included a selection of his ‘Notes’ in the new book. The new edition, which is edited by Dr John Knightly and Dr Owen O’Shea, features the original text of ‘Memories of Other Days’ along with new and some colourised images from Sugrue’s vast collection of photographs. Directed by Prof. Peter Woodman (UCC) and his team, excavations from 1983 to 1995 confirmed that Mesolithic (c.8000-3800BCE) hunter-gatherers lived in the South-West of the island. Brown Butter Tomato& Ricotta Pasta Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School
At this time of year, tomatoes are at their best: sweet, juicy and full of flavour. When an ingredient is this good, there is very little reason to do too much to it. If you are lucky to grow your own or know someone who does, you are in for a treat. This is a quick summer pasta where the tomatoes are cooked just enough to release their juices while still keeping some of their freshness. Browning the butter first gives the sauce a wonderful nutty flavour, while creamy ricotta, lemon and plenty of fresh basil keep everything light and fresh. The most important part of the recipe is allowing the butter to properly brown. As it cooks, the milk solids in the butter begin to toast, changing from pale yellow to golden brown and developing a rich, almost hazelnut-like flavour. Keep an eye on it, as there is a fine line between beautifully browned butter and burnt butter. Serves 4
Ingredients 400g pasta, such as spaghetti, linguine or tagliatelle 75g butter 2 cloves garlic, finely sliced 500g ripe cherry tomatoes, halved 1 tsp. of chilli flakes 250g ricotta 1 lemon A large handful of fresh basil leaves Parmesan, finely grated Salt and pepper Extra virgin olive oil, to finish
Method Bring a large pot of well-salted water to the boil and cook the pasta according to the packet instructions until al dente. Before draining, reserve a ladle of the pasta cooking water. While the pasta is cooking, add the butter to a large frying pan over a medium heat. Allow it to melt and continue cooking until it begins to foam. Swirl the pan occasionally. The butter will gradually turn golden brown and develop a nutty aroma. Once the butter is browned, reduce the heat and add the garlic and chilli flakes. Cook for about 30 seconds, taking care not to burn the garlic. Add the tomatoes, season with salt and black pepper and cook for 3–4 minutes. You want some of the tomatoes to soften and release their juices while others retain their shape. Add the drained pasta directly to the pan along with a splash of the reserved pasta water. Toss everything together, adding a little more pasta water if necessary to create a shiny sauce that coats the pasta. Add the zest of half the lemon, a squeeze of lemon juice, most of the Parmesan and plenty of torn basil. Toss again and check the seasoning. Divide the pasta between warm bowls. Spoon the ricotta generously over the top rather than mixing it completely through the pasta. Finish with the remaining Parmesan, fresh basil, black pepper and a drizzle of good extra virgin olive oil. Bain Taitneamh As!! West Kerry Live 21

The Best Nest(s) in the West Jonathan Biddle Ringed Plovers (Feadog Chladaigh) are smartly patterned shorebirds that are a fair bit smaller than the blackbird. They are frequent winter visitors to the shores of West Kerry, but are on the Amber list of declining birds in Ireland. Whereas they were once widespread breeders on the strands of Corca Dhuibhne, increasingly they are unable to raise young birds, (with none of the attempted nests on Ventry surviving this summer & only 3 or 4 local nests known to have hatched chicks this season). They nest on the ground, typically amongst pebbles above the high tide line on beaches, scraping out a neat hollow in the sand & relying on the camouflage of their eggs & the parents' dedicated vigilance for protection. This strategy is quite effective against natural predators, however with a huge increase in people & dog walkers enjoying beach walks, it is very difficult for them to successfully nest on many of Europe's beaches, including locally. Happily with a little awareness and human collaboration, it is possible for them to share the sands with us.
some time before its wings would be ready for flying. With the busyness of summer there was some disturbance to the plovers' territory and hideouts . After going missing for two days both parents and their growing chick were relocated over 800 metres further along the beach on 8th July. The plover family then moved back to the area near where their nest had been, for the next few days, before the chick was finally able to fly on the 13th July, successfully surviving the most vulnerable first challenge of its life. It was incredible to witness (through binoculars from a distance) the dedication and teamwork of both plover parents on their epic 50+ days of focus and work to bring up their single chick for the year. Although it may seem just a small win for local nature, it was very uplifting to see how many people respected the space the plovers needed in order survive. Although the miles of stunning beaches in Corca Dhuibhne provide us with the taste of freedom needed in our busy modern lives, huge thanks is due to those who also gave nature the freedom it also needs. On 23rd of May a female laid the last of a clutch of four tiny eggs in the scrape nest and both parents took turns to incubate the eggs or guard against any disturbance, by walking along calling and faking having a broken wing to lead any threats away from the nest. They did this continuously through rain, sun and busy days for 28 days until three fluffball chicks hatched on 19th June. The three chicks were out scampering around by the next day, with both ever-vigilant parents calling to them with any sign of approaching danger, whereas the chicks would hunker down and hide in a hollow or behind a stone. Despite such dedicated parents doing all they could, it became apparent that only one chick survived the first week, regardless the parents continued guarding their surviving tiny offspring. Cara Credit Union is proud to support Dingle Heartsafe through the purchase of a mobile defibrillator, helping to further strengthen emergency response capabilities throughout the Corca Dhuibhne and West Kerry community. Dingle Heartsafe was established by a dedicated group of volunteers committed to improving cardiac emergency response across the Dingle Peninsula and wider West Kerry area. The organisation currently oversees a network of defibrillators throughout the region and operates a volunteer First Responders group that assists the National Ambulance Service during medical emergencies.
Some woman for one woman! Kathleen passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on 31st July 2026. Born on 17th November 1929 in Gleann Fán, Ventry, to Jack Houlihan and Johanna Sayers. Kathleen moved to New York in 1961 and on her journey across the Atlantic she met her future husband Joe Fitzgerald from Reenconnell and they married the following year. Kathleen and Joe were lifelong companions and best friends until Joe passed away in 2016 with Kathleen caring for him lovingly for their last years together. Though his loss was difficult Kathleen continued to embrace life. Her zest for life kept her young and vibrant, with the enthusiasm and spirit of a young girl she was always up for the craic. In 2023, accompanied by her daughters, Kathleen made her last trip to Ireland. Returning home to Gleann Fán to celebrate her grandnephew's wedding. Kathleen treasured every moment and vowed to come home again but alas it was not to be.

The newly funded mobile defibrillator will enhance the group's ability to respond quickly to incidents and provide lifesaving assistance when and where it is needed most. Speaking about the donation, Vincent Manning of Dingle Heartsafe expressed his appreciation for the support received from Cara Credit Union. "Community support is vital to everything we do. Equipment such as mobile defibrillators allows our volunteers to continue responding to emergencies and helping save lives throughout West Kerry. We are extremely grateful to Cara Credit Union for recognising the importance of this work and for supporting our efforts." Kathleen is pre-deceased by her beloved husband Joe, her parents, sister Molly, brothers Pat, Peter and Mike. Her niece Joan Houlihan Waldron (Dublin), nephew Michael Houlihan (Dublin) and godson Pádraig Long (Fán). Kathleen is survived by her 6 children; Joan (& Kevin Coyle), Eileen (& Matt Kehoe), Maura (& Billy Gattis), Michael Fitzgerald, Deirdre (& Mick McCarthy), Brian Fitzgerald (& Erin Patton) and her 13 much loved and adored grandchildren, her great-grandson and 3 grandnephews. Kathleen is also survived by 9 nieces and nephews in Ireland and her niece Cait Houlihan Hart (James Hart) who emigrated to New York in 1986 and became an integral part of the Fitzgerald clan and Kathleen's Irish speaking partner. Cure For A Burn In Irish Folklore Micheál Ó Coileáin
Lady Gregory, who also collected local folklore in County Galway told of a man called Connolly who lived near Gort, ‘he knew every herb that grew in the earth’ and also had a cure for a burn. ‘He boiled down herbs with a bit of lard’ which was applied three times to burnt skin.’ Lady Wilde, in the late 1800’s documented a burn cure wh ich involved taking sheep’s suet and the rind of the elder tree which were boiled together. The ointment produced could cure a burn without leaving a mark.

Traditional Irish cures are historical folk remedies, charms, and rituals passed down through generations. They rely on local plants, water from sacred wells, animal fats, or "the cure", which was seen as special powers believed to be held by specific individuals. Such cures in Ireland are generally rooted in folklore. In mythical Ireland, Dian Céacht was the physician of the Tuatha Dé Danann, and his ability to heal others was the beginning of a long tradition of people who held curative powers. In her insightful book on the ‘Cures of Ireland’, (2023) Cecily Gilligan opens with a quote from Oscar Wilde’s mother, Lady Wilde, herself a folklore collector, ‘that the Irish alone, preserve the strange and mystic secrets of herbs through whose potent powers they can cure disease.’ In Irish folklore, certain individuals are believed to inherit or acquire "the cure" for specific ailments. For burns, this ritual historically manifested in two primary ways; The Bog Lizard Ritual: According to the folklore gathered in the 1930’s for in the Schools Folklore collection, a person would find a "man-keeper" (a native Irish viviparous bog lizard or in some cases it could be a Smooth Newt). They would lick the lizard from tail to snout three times against the grain, swallowing the saliva on each occasion. Folklore dictated that the lizard must then be killed or freed, transferring the magical healing power permanently to the human’s tongue. Anyone suffering from a burn could then visit this person to have their wound licked and "cured". The Prayer Ritual: Another variation involved a healer licking the burn twice while reciting specific religious charms, such as invoking St. Laurence (who was martyred by burning) followed by three Hail Marys! Cicily Gilligan gives an account of meeting an elderly woman in south County Sligo who had acquired the cure for a burn on her tongue in childhood. Regardless of the size of the burn, she always had enough saliva to apply to the burnt skin. The pain disappeared once she licked the burn and any blister subsided. She had never picked up an infection while performing her cure. The Sligo lady felt that her cure was always successful and she had a great faith in cures generally ‘the cure is different to the doctor…, If you get cured with a cure, you’re cured’! Gilligan also gives an account of meeting a man in his late forties with a similar cure for burns, after his father encouraged him to lick a man-keeper. His cure involved licking the burnt skin and the area around it. He then got the person with the burn to bless themselves three times and he himself would bless himself once. His cure would remove the pain from the burn and no scar would be left, unless the burn was very deep. 'Classical Sessions' concerts:

The Moriarty brothers and Nathan Meltzer return this summer for another series of classical sessions in Halla Le Chéile on the 13th and 16th of August at 7:30pm. Joining them this year is an outstanding group of internationally acclaimed musicians from across the globe, bringing together an exciting programme that spans beloved classical works such as Vivaldi and Tchaikovsky to more modern masterpieces such as Max Richter.

The Dingle Regatta is back for the 15th & 16th, best of luck to all the competitors, and National Heritage Week rolls out from the 15th . The 4th Shantalliv Tap Dance Festival takes place in Castlegregory 28th-30th August. An opportunity to try this percussive dance for all ages. Beginners welcome. On Sunday 30th August there is an exciting & special Tap Dance Showcase in Siamsa Tire at 7 pm featuring world class tap dance professionals from the USA & Europe plus some talented Kerry Tap Ensemble dancers. Ceann Sléibhe, Slí Cheann Sléibhe / Slea Head Drive and Conor Pass are still experiencing challenges the biggest being Google Maps sending visitors to Slea Head by the most direct and eco efficient way – against the flow of traffic in many cases. Therefore, could you please continue to recommend to visitors to turn off their Sat Navs / Google Maps and follow the Kerry County Council and Wild Atlantic Way / WAW directional signs. This includes NOT using An Classach thus allowing the businesses along Ceann Sléibhe, Fahan, Dún Chaoin,An Clóthar, Baile an Fheirteáraigh, Baile na nGall agus An Fheothanach every opportunity to welcome visitors. We also want locals and visitors to also enjoy the Conor Pass and Dingle Peninsula North Shore.
