Worth Its Salt: Do We Really Need More Electrolytes?

Long before electrolyte drinks came in lemon-lime sachets and appeared in every gym bag, farmers were buying mineral mixes and salt licks for cattle. Animals have always sought out salt and other minerals when they need them, sometimes licking stones, soil or whatever else seems to fit the bill. After an unusually long spell of warm weather, it is easy to see why electrolytes are having another moment, although this time the salt lick has been replaced by a brightly branded tub.

There is good reason for the interest, because electrolytes are essential to fluid balance, nerve signals, muscle contraction and heart rhythm. The confusion begins when this basic biological need becomes folded into the idea that everyone is constantly running low. Most of the time, a healthy body is quietly maintaining its electrolyte balance without requiring a tropical-flavoured intervention.

Salt, minerals and electrolytes are often spoken about as though they are the same thing, but there is a clear distinction: all electrolytes are minerals, but not all minerals are electrolytes. Iron, for example, helps carry oxygen in the blood, while zinc supports immunity and healing, yet neither is described as an electrolyte. Electrolytes are minerals such as sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium and magnesium which, when dissolved in body fluids, can carry electrical signals through the body. This allows them to help regulate water balance, send messages along nerves and enable muscles, including the heart, to contract.

Ordinary table salt is mainly sodium chloride, so it provides two important electrolytes, but it is not a complete mineral mixture. A pinch of pink salt in water may add sodium and chloride, but it does not automatically create a balanced rehydration drink. Himalayan and Celtic salts contain traces of other minerals, but not in amounts that make a pinch in water a complete answer to hydration.

The body usually gets its electrolytes through ordinary food and drink. Sodium and chloride come mainly from salt, while potassium is plentiful in potatoes, beans, vegetables, fruit, dairy foods and fish. Magnesium is found in nuts, seeds, wholegrains, beans and leafy greens, and calcium comes from dairy foods, fortified dairy alternatives, tofu, sardines and certain vegetables. For most people eating a varied diet, these foods comfortably replace the small amounts lost during normal daily life.

The kidneys also work continuously to keep water and minerals within a remarkably narrow range, retaining what is needed and passing on what is not. Thirst, appetite and urine output form part of this finely tuned system. Animals have their own version: grazing diets can be naturally low in sodium, which is one reason cattle, horses and other herbivores may actively seek salt. The salt lick is not a farmyard wellness trend; it is there to meet a real biological need.

This question becomes more relevant during a prolonged spell of hot weather. Heat alone does not automatically create an electrolyte deficiency, but several warm days combined with heavy sweating, poor appetite or too little fluid can begin to upset the balance. Someone working outdoors, gardening for hours, walking long distances or struggling in an overheated house may lose more fluid and salt than they realise, without doing anything resembling endurance sport. Irish bodies are well practised at coping with drizzle; sustained heat requires a little more improvisation.

Thirst, a dry mouth, darker urine and urinating less often can indicate that more fluid is needed. Headache, tiredness, weakness and dizziness

may also occur, although these symptoms are less specific. Dehydration simply means that the body has lost more fluid than it has taken in. An electrolyte imbalance is different: it means that the level of one or more electrolytes has become too high or too low. The two can occur together after heavy sweating, vomiting or diarrhoea, but they are not the same. Extra electrolytes are most useful when losses have been significant. Certain medicines can also alter balance. Some diuretics increase the loss of sodium or potassium, while other heart and blood-pressure medicines may cause potassium to rise. In these circumstances, casually adding an electrolyte drink without knowing what is high or low may not be helpful. Older adults need particular attention during hot weather because the sensation of thirst can become less reliable with age. Health conditions and medicines can make the picture more complicated too. Wanting something salty after hours of sweating may make perfect sense, while wanting crisps at nine o’clock may simply mean that crisp cravings are real. Human instinct is not always as straightforward as a horse heading for a mineral block.

This uncertainty has created fertile ground for some very convincing advice online. One common claim is that everyone should begin the day with electrolytes because we wake up dehydrated. Most people have simply gone several hours without a drink, and water with breakfast will do the job perfectly well. Plain water does not normally “wash out” minerals, a salt craving is not a diagnosis, and every headache, cramp or foggy afternoon is not evidence of low electrolytes. The body may be asking for something, but it is not always asking for a citrus-flavoured powder. It is also worth separating ordinary electrolyte drinks from oral rehydration solutions. Sports and wellness drinks vary considerably and may contain sodium, potassium, sugar, sweeteners, caffeine or flavourings. A proper oral rehydration solution is carefully formulated for significant losses, particularly after vomiting or diarrhoea.

The science behind it is surprisingly elegant. A small amount of glucose helps sodium to cross the wall of the intestine, and water follows with it. This is why an oral rehydration solution contains both salts and glucose in carefully judged proportions; it is not simply salty water. Old household remedies such as broth, watery salted gruel or weak sweetened drinks were reaching towards the same principle, although modern formulas are far more precise.

The useful question, then, is not whether electrolytes are good or bad, but what has actually been lost. After a normal day, water and regular meals will usually restore what the body needs. After hours of heavy sweating, illness or poor food and fluid intake, replacing both water and electrolytes may be appropriate. Persistent weakness, confusion, severe dizziness or repeated dehydration needs proper assessment rather than nutritional guesswork.

Animals seek out salt when there is a genuine need; they do not visit the mineral block because the packaging is attractive or they saw it on social moo-dia. There may be some wisdom in that. Electrolytes are essential, but the need for extra help depends on the circumstances—not on how convincingly a packet promises hydration, energy and a better start to the morning.

-Kerry People 22 May 1920

On Saturday night or Sunday morning the goods store of the Dingle Railway Company, at Dingle, was broken into and a case of whiskey was taken away. The damage done is estimated at £10. The break-in was discovered on Sunday morning by the citizen police. The case of whiskey was taken into the yard, where some of the bottles were broken and the remainder removed from the area. It is reported that the names of the thieves have been made known to the citizen police.

(The citizen police in Dingle during 1920 were the Irish Republican Police or the Sinn Féin Police who were established by Dáil Éireann. They were not an armed force.)

Strike Action

-Kerry People 19 May 1906

A strange and rather exciting incident took place near Brosna on Tuesday morning when the entire workforce employed by the Congested Districts Board, comprising of some sixty men, downed tools and declared a strike. It appears that the men have been employed in the construction of new road at Knockbrack by the Board for the past six weeks but only received a portion of their wages.

Accordingly, on Tuesday they decided to go on strike until they were fully paid up for the shortfall. The whole body of men turned out en masse and proceeded to Feale Bridge, and the stewards in charge of the men, and of directing operations, telegraphed headquarters to inform them of events in Kerry. The situation was resolved in the evening when a paymaster arrived from the Board, and each man was paid in full. It is expected that this work, which is a great boon to the men and their families, will continue for much of the summer months.

Malicious Injuries

-Kerry Evening Post 02 May 1896

Numerous people in Kerry have reported their animals, goods and properties being destroyed by persons unknown and are demanding compensation.

A mister E.M Bernard, from Kilbonane parish near Killarney, is seeking compensation from the Government for the savage assault on his twoyear-old colt. The animal was stabbed repeatedly with a sharp implement between the forelegs and was further maimed, gashed and stabbed at Faha, on February 15, 1895. He is seeking £12 compensation. In Killarney parish Daniel J. Counihan seeks £26 compensation resulting from his hay loft and the straw therein, having been maliciously destroyed. Also, a stable, outhouse, cowhouse, firkin house and poultry house damaged and injured at Main St. Killarney on the night of Tuesday 22 October 1895, or early the next morning.

Similarly, Michael Warren is seeking compensation of £14 for the cruel killing of his cow. Those responsible had placed a nail in her food to cause her to swallow it and from the effects of which she died at Scrahan, Duagh on Sunday 8th December 1895.

Finally, Mr. Henry Herbert of Muckross is seeking compensation for the loss and destruction of eight hundred cherry and plum saplings which were maliciously destroyed by unknown persons. The plants were pulled up and destroyed on the night of Monday, February 17th, 1896, and £4 compensation sought.

The Condemned Man

-Kerry Reporter 03 August 1889

The condemned man Laurence Hickey, who was sentenced to death for the murder of Denis Daly, in November last, has now become perfectly resigned to his fate and attends faithfully to the ministrations of the prison chaplain. The execution is to take place in four days’ time, on the morning of August seventh.

The condemned man’s solicitor has forwarded a memorial to the Lord Lieutenant, Charles -Vane – Tempest- Stewart, 6th Marquess of Londonderry, seeking a reprieve.

The grounds set out in the memorial, asking for a reprieve, were that Hickey’s sister had been committed to an asylum, and that Hickey himself was not altogether perfectly sane at time. It also stated that that the brothers of the murdered man do not wish to see the execution being carried out. The response from the Lord Lieutenant stated that the matter is ‘under consideration’.

(Unfortunately, there is no information in the article regarding the home place of Hickey, Daly or the location of the prison. Also, according to the records, the Lord Lieutenant’s role was from August 1886 to July 1889 which means he was gone when the matter of a reprieve was ‘under consideration’ in August 1889.)

The Maharees

A quarter of an hour’s sail lands the tourist on Illaun-shannig (sic), (Leary’s island), the largest of the Cluster called the Seven Hogs, or Maharees Islands.

Here, on an eminence, and surrounded by a cashiol (sic), about twelve feet in thickness, stands as attractive and interesting an assemblage of ruins as any to be met within Europe.

Their shape, that of the beehives, their rude workmanship, all the characteristic features, clearly indicate that they belong to the primitive ages of Christianity. Standing on a height and gazing all around, what a grand, what an enchanting panorama bursts on the view. To the northeast, and confronting Brandon Head on the west, rises Kerry Head, both impregnable barriers to the thundering ordnance of the Atlantic. A curious but authenticated fact is that neither a rat nor a mouse can exist on Kilshannig Island.

New Pump – No Water

Sir, would you kindly insert in the next issue of your paper, to lay before the responsible parties, the great neglect they are guilty of in sinking a useless pump, in the village of Ballyduff, at great labour and expense. There is not a drop of water in it at present, and the residents must go one or two miles to draw water.

There is a regular famine for water in the village at present. I won’t go any further about the subject now, but if the evil is not corrected in time, the public shall hear more about of it. Yours, A Benefactor.

Good luck to the players and management of the Kerry Ladies Senior Football Team in the forthcoming All Ireland Senior Championship semi final fixture against old rivals Dublin this weekend.

Best of luck also to the Players and Management of the Kerry Mens Senior Football Team in their All Ireland Final fixture with Mayo on Sunday July 26th in Croke Park. Lets hope we see another game filled with traditional skill, passion and sportsmanship which certainly kept the hearts pounding and supporters happy in all the Championship games so far this year.

Tidy Towns. Volunteer Work Evenings continue on Mondays meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7pm.

Thanks to the efforts of Marian, Vincent, John and Ihor we succeeded in completing some outstanding painting work on walls, fences, car parks and street signs during the recent dry spell. However watering all the flow/shrub tubs and beds have taken up valuable time in this period also.

We appeal to all property owners, occupants or employees tp please keep the areas adjacent to their respective premises litter and weed free and in a more respectable and presentable manner. Not too much to ask in this thriving town?.

Parking. The Business Chamber again appeal to employees of various establishments to please park their vehicles on the outskirts of town and walk the short distances to their work locations. Vehicles parked for long periods in the town centre take up valuable spaces each of which could be used up to ten times daily by shoppers or short stay visitors or others who contribute to the economy of our area. Speed Limits. Under a Draft National Speed Limit Plan for Urban and Built Up Areas, Kerry County Council have published a map showing the proposed new speed limits in Dingle Town. Copies will be available for inspection on the website www. kerrycoco.ie or in Room 115 County Buildings Tralee or local County Council offices up to Friday July 24th.

Submissions/observations on the plans can be made direct to County Buildings up to Friday August 7th.

On a quick view of the plan it appears that a large part of the town will have speed limits reduced to 30km/h which hopefully will help make out roads safer for all road users.

As our area is in peak summer holiday season we remind both visitors and locals of the "See Something - Say Something" initiative which has been quite successful since its introduction over the past 2 years. Basically if one see or hears something which is a danger to themselves or to others they are asked to text to 50555 with a short message starting with Dingle and a brief description of the location and content of the incident. The information is in total confidence and will be reacted to as soon as An Garda Siochana have personnel nearby to attend to the scene.

Signage is on shop windows/doors and street poles in most streets around town and the quick action of the public so far has helped sort situations which may have become more serious if the text system had not been used.

Events. Only a few weeks to go to hectic August in Dingle with the Races, Regattas, and Marathons to mention but a few of the many events that take place throughout the peninsula at this time of year. We encourage our readers to come out support the activities and enjoy the long hot summer days which hopefully will last at least until school reopening time again.

Barbecued Butterflied Leg of Lamb with Roasted Peppers & Mint Yoghurt

Ask your butcher to butterfly the lamb, by butterflying the lamb it cooks quickly, develops a lovely smoky flavour and remains wonderfully succulent.

Served with roasted peppers and a cooling mint yoghurt, this dish is perfect for summer entertaining, bringing together simple flavours and making the most of those long sunny evenings around the barbecue. Serves 6 to 8

Ingredients

1 leg of lamb, approximately 2 kg, butterflied

3 cloves garlic, crushed

1 tablespoon chopped rosemary

1 tablespoon chopped thyme

zest and juice of 1 lemon

3 tablespoons olive oil

salt and black pepper

For the roasted peppers:

3 red peppers

2 yellow peppers

1 red onion, sliced

2 tablespoons olive oil

For the mint yoghurt:

250 g Greek yoghurt

2 tablespoons chopped fresh mint

1 teaspoon honey

juice of half a lemon

salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method

For the lamb

Mix together the garlic, rosemary, thyme, lemon zest, lemon juice and olive oil. Rub all over the lamb, season well and leave to marinate for at least two hours or overnight if possible.

For the peppers

Place the peppers directly on the barbecue or under a hot grill until the skins are blackened. Place in a bowl and cover for ten minutes before peeling away the skins. Slice and toss with the red onion and olive oil.

Combine all the ingredients for the mint yoghurt and refrigerate until needed.

To cook the lamb

Cook the lamb over a medium heat barbecue for approximately 12 to 15 minutes on each side depending on thickness and how pink you like it. Remove from the barbecue and allow to rest for at least 15 minutes before slicing.

Serve with the roasted peppers, mint yoghurt and perhaps some new potatoes or a simple green salad.

The final social occasion of the twinning visit was the Gala evening hosted by Camp Town Twinning on Friday night in Camp Community Centre.

A wine reception, hot food, traditional Irish and Breton music was enjoyed by all, a lovely end to a great week for local and Breton families.

On Wednesday, The twinning Group visited Milo O'Brien Kilteenbane for a sheep dog trial. Milo, a National and International sheep dog trails champion skilfully put the dogs through their paces, penning them with ease, showing Milo's great rapport with his sheepdogs and sheep.

Jimmy O'Dywer demonstrated his sheep shearing skills once again as always doing a lovely clean shear. Some of us still remember Jimmy's record breaking achievement in 1989 when he sheared 520 sheep in 9 hours during our All Ireland Sheep Shearing weekend in Camp. Well done Jimmy, still well able. Afterwards a traditional mutton pie was sampled and enjoyed in the Old School by all. A souvenir of a pouch of wool courtesy of Gleann na nGealt Organic Sheep Farm was presented to all our visitors to take home a nice momento to them remember their visit and experience in Camp.

Day trips out to Dingle and Foynes and plenty of Irish Traditional and Breton Music and Dance in The Junction Bar and The Railway Tavern made the week complete. Well done to Camp Twinning, it was a great week and memories are made once again in Camp, meeting our Breton families and friends.

CELEBRATION FOR THOMAS

Over 200 people attended Thomas's Waistcoat night on Sunday, 5th July. This was a lovely celebration of the life of our popular local publican and dedicated community man, Thomas Ashe. Guests enjoyed a delicious barbecue followed by beautiful music performed by Camp local and Breton musicians. Chairman of Camp Community Council, Gene Finn, delivered a warm, heartfelt, and moving tribute to his great friend Thomas, who passed away on 24 December 2025.

Bríd Ní Mhóráin welcomed everyone bilingually, and members of our Breton community, our twinning partners for the past 30 years, also paid tribute to Thomas, whom they had come to know well through many years of twinning visits.

Thank you to Camp Community Council and Camp Twinning for organising such a wonderful evening. It was a fitting tribute to Thomas, a proud Camp man, whose kindness, friendship, and community spirit will live on in the memories and history of our village for generations to come. Rest In Peace, Thomas. Ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís.

Film Producer / Former Head of Production at Walt Disney Studios Tell us about yourself

I’m a film producer working in the film industry for almost 50 years. Before that I was a professional ice hockey player.

My mother, Mary O’Connor, was born on John Street in Dingle. My father, Edward Dowd, came from Cloghane. Both emigrated at the same time in 1903 to Springfield, Massachussets, where many people from here emigrated to.

I grew up in Boston; my mother would tell stories about Dingle; when I got to college, I took a summer off and came to Dingle, by chance as they were shooting Ryan’s Daughter. A memory from that trip was going into a pub right across from the harbour and asking for a cold beer and the guy behind the bar looks at me, reaches down to the floor and picks up a bottle of Harp and says, “that’s about as cold as you’re going to get” How did you get into the film industry?

My sister was a screenwriter and she called me one day and said she had an idea and wanted to come and visit me and the team I played for in Pittsburgh; she stayed 2 weeks and trailed around with the team. A year later she called and said, “you’re not going to believe this but I wrote a screenplay about you and your team and Universal Studios wants to make the picture and they want Paul Newman to star in it.”

She asked if I’d have dinner with the studio executives as they didn’t believe the stuff in the movie. So I got on a plane, arrived in LA for the first time, 25 years old. A limo driver took me to Universal Studios, where, sitting at the table were Paul Newman, George Roy Hill, Marshall Green, Head of Production and my sister. After dinner, the Head of Production got up and said, “we’re making this movie and you’re coming to work on it.” The film, Slap Shot, still has a strong following almost 50 years on.

What inspired you to want to work in film? (film, TV programme, actor, etc.) And what inspires/motivates you from day to day in your work?

What attracted me was being the guy who figured out how to get the movie made in time and on budget and telling people what they needed to do every day. I love being with creatives and working together to tell the story. I love the open cooperation on movie sets.

What was your first job in film and what have you worked on since? I had three jobs on Slap Shot - technical advisor, stunt coordinator (none of the Hollywood actors knew how to skate and of course I was a hockey player) and actor.

When Slap Shot was done, I quit hockey, drove out to LA and started from scratch. I got a job as a production assistant on Welcome Back, Kotter with John Travolta, his first TV show. I fell in love with film production. I did Hoffa with Danny DeVito. I worked as AD with Robert Altman on eight movies and he became my mentor and got me to the next step as Producer.

I did my own movie, State of Grace, with Sean Penn, Ed Harris, Gary Oldman, Robin Wright, John C. Reilly and John Turturro about the real-life Hell’s Kitchen gang, the Westies, who went up against the Mafia. Ennio Morricone called us one day and we trundled to his office in Rome with a rough cut of the movie under our arm, and he ended up doing the score; one of his most eclectic scores.

I have been producer and AD, on over fifty feature films including Apocalypto, Last of the Mohicans, Wonder Boys, Shanghai Noon, Gl Jane, The 13th Warrior, King Arthur, Veronica Guerin and The Three Musketeers. I’ve worked with some of the best known directors. Working with Danny De Vito, Norman Jewison, Robert Altman, David Mamet, James L. Brooks and Mel Gibson led to an eight-year stint as Head of Production at Caravan Pictures and Spyglass Entertainment in Los Angeles.

What are you working on at the moment? Upcoming projects?

I’m working with the London Screenwriters’ Festival and I teach. What job(s) are you most proud of?

The biggest miracle, and the thing I’m most proud of, more than all the film stuff, is that I was lucky enough to have two beautiful children. What’s your process? How do you get into a role/project and how do you work?

The most important element of making any movie is story, the story has to be good. Think of your idea as a movie, would it be interesting to other people?, think of films you like, think about how you want to visually represent the story.

Doing a movie is all about prep. Meeting the director, getting his/her vision, figuring out if there is enough money to make the vision. I go line by line to make a detailed, accurate budget. I get everyone on board. I put together the visuals, meet the production designer to understand sets, locations and figure that out financially. I hire the crew to suit the movie. I make sure to include cover sets.

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to get into the film industry? (or best advice you got?)

Work hard and keep your eyes open for opportunities to step forward and say, I can do that.

Creative Climate Action Funding

Funding secured to support communityled initiative in West Kerry

A €750,000 state grant has been awarded to West Kerry Food Futures, a project that brings creative practitioners together with local food producers to reimagine the region's food economy.

West Kerry Food Futures is one of a select handful of flagship initiatives nationwide to secure the maximum funding tier under Phase III of the state’s prestigious Creative Climate Action Fund. The initiative will work with farmers, fishermen and growers to develop sustainable routes to market for local produce, while strengthening local livelihoods and reducing environmental impact.

Led by the Dingle Hub, a not-for-profit organisation, in partnership with the Maharees Conservation Association, the three-year initiative uses creative methodologies to design a low-carbon, resilient local food economy.

What is the Creative Climate Action Fund?

The Creative Climate Action Fund is a €6.5 million state initiative administered by the Creative Ireland Programme, funded through a partnership with the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications and the Department of the Taoiseach. The fund exists to bridge the gap between climate science and public behaviour. Recognising that behavioural and cultural change is required to meet national climate targets, the fund provides financial support to projects that embed creative professionals, such as artists, designers, and storytellers, directly into communities. The goal is to use creative practices to make complex environmental issues tangible, helping communities co-design and implement practical, long-term sustainability solutions.

How Creative Innovation Will Shape West Kerry’s Food System: The €750,000 investment will fund a collaborative process where artists and designers work alongside local growers, farmers, fishermen, and consumers to deliver:

• Community Workshops: Using creative facilitation to bring producers and locals together, mapping out real-world solutions for regional food security.

• Creative Engagement and Storytelling: Developing publicfacing cultural projects and narratives that make the benefits of buying local food clear, relatable, and socially impactful.

• Co-Designed Shared Local Services: Working with creative systems-designers to build community-led models for regional distribution, marketing, and administration, making small-scale production viable.

• Pilot Market Transitions: Testing highly visible, direct-to-consumer routes to market that reduce transport emissions and keep food profits within the community.

Creative Practice Grounded in the Community

The initiative builds on recent feasibility research showing that rural food networks thrive when local producers stop competing for distant markets and start sharing local logistics such as distribution, marketing and administration.

Over the coming months, the project will move into a proof-of-concept phase, where practical models, such as local food sales, shared services and coordinated supply chains, will be tested in real-world conditions.This phase will help determine what works best for West Kerry, with the long-term aim of establishing viable, communityowned approaches to local food production and distribution.

Pachamama Sails into Dingle

TOPtoTOP Global Climate Expedition is a Swiss-based non-profit organization whose mission is to Inspire Youth to Save Our Planet.

Some of the Crew from The TOPTOTOP Yacht Pachamama, on Carrauntoohil this week with local man Darach Ó Murchu. The vessel which is its way to the Antarctic pulled into Dingle on Tuesday to climb Ireland's highest mountain and find out about some of the Environmental initiatives that are being carried out on the Peninsula.

Over the past 20 years, TOPtoTOP has circumnavigated our blue planet conducting field-based research for universities, scientists and research organizations, visiting the world’s most remote regions and their native inhabitants, and sharing examples of innovative solutions to protect, preserve and conserve our planet.

Dario Schwoerer, a Swiss climatologist and international ski-and mountain guide (UIAGM), contributed to the IPCC report in 2010 about the impact of climate change on mountain guiding in the Bernina region of the Swiss Alps (see: http://www.adventure.ch/news/climatch.htm ). He experienced the fragile environment he refers to as “his office” degrading rapidly and decided to dedicate his life to educating the public on how to respect nature and protect it for future generations. Joined by his wife Sabine, they founded TOPtoTOP with the goal of being the first expedition, connecting all climates in traversing the seven seas and reaching the highest peaks on each of the seven continents, relying only on the power of nature and the human spirit.

The Schwoerer’s journey in their expedition sailboat Pachamama (Inca for Mother Earth) has taken them over 100,000 nautical miles to more than 100 countries. Along the way they have made presentations on climate change to more than 100,000 students. Their message is one of hope designed to inspire students and communities to act for a better future by sharing experiences of nature’s beauty and resiliency, and presenting innovations for a healthy planet.

Dario and Sabine are not alone in their efforts to engage with students. During their journey they have had five children, who along with volunteers participate in classroom presentations demonstrating that progress towards important conservation goals can be achieved in balance with nature. Together, Dario and Sabine Schwörer, their children and TOPtoTOP volunteers are collecting, documenting and disseminating vital first-hand climate impacts from around the world, teaching students to celebrate nature and protect their natural environments, and bringing a important message of hope to a planet seeking a healthy future.

The Arts Council is delighted to announce that Laureate for Irish Fiction Éilís Ní Dhuibhne will host an in-conversation event on Thursday 16 July 2026 in Dunquin.

This event, which will take place in the Blasket Centre on Thursday 16 July from 7:30pm will be a bilingual event and features talented Kerry writers Noel O’Regan and Pádraig Ó Cíobháin in conversation with the Laureate. The discussion will focus on their writing and recent books, O’Regan’s debut novel Though the Bodies Fall (2023) and Ó Cíobháin’s short story collection De Chion Focal (2015). It will also feature a performance by local sean-nós singer Sláine Ní Chathallain.

The event, which is in association with Dingle Literary Festival and the Blasket Centre, is free and open to the public, but booking is essential. Tickets can be reserved online through the Dingle Literary Festival website.

The event in Dunquin is one of a series of events as part of Éilís Ní Dhuibhne’s ‘Island of Imagination: A Literary Tour of Ireland’ Laureate for Irish Fiction programme, which delves into contemporary Irish fiction on a journey of exploration to highlight literature emanating from every county in Ireland.

We the family of Deborah (Debbie), would like to express a sincere heartfelt thank you and send a message of appreciation to everyone who has reached out to us, supported us, acknowledged our loss, sympathised with us and especially to those who have walked beside us everyday carrying us through the journey on the path of grief. As we continue to navigate the loss we reflect on the kindness and generosity we have received since Deborah’s terminal diagnosis in 2024 but especially over the last 12 months since she deceased.

To her own family, the O’Dowds, thank you. To her in laws, the Dorgan family, thank you. To her friends, neighbours and extended family thank you all. For the mass cards, sympathy cards, the beautiful letters, and the bouquets of flowers thank you.

To all the people who attended her wake, who travelled from near and far, to those who showered us with love and care, to those who delivered food and drinks to the house, who assisted in the kitchen, thank you.

To the West Kerry Community, the gardaí síochána, the emergency services, local businesses, thank you.

To our local diocesan priests, Fr Michael Moynihan, Fr Jim Sheehy, Fr Eugene Kiely, who rejoiced the life of Deborah with us, celebrating her in a special mass, a woman with tremendous faith, and an extraordinary inner strength, who radiated inner beauty and kindness, who carried her illness with grace and bravery beyond compare. To our parish clerk Cathy Griffin, thank you.

To all who participated in her funeral mass, the singers, musicians, readers, eulogy, ministers of the Eucharist, the pallbearers, the funeral director Donal O’Connor, the grave attendants for the preparation and dedication provided. Thank you.

To Benner’s Hotel and the lovely friendly staff who provided us with a very warm welcome and an exceptional great post funeral meal to celebrate the life of Deborah. Thank you.

A massive thank you to the hard working healthcare professionals who cared for Deborah. Her General Practitioner Dr Fiona Kavanagh, and to all the local Gp’s and Practise Nurses, at Dingle Medical Centre, the staff of Bon Secours Hospital Tralee, The Mercy hospital Cork, University Hospital Kerry. The oncology team in Cork and Kerry, the public health nurses, the community nurses, the local nurses, WKCH, the community intervention team, the multidisciplinary team, pastoral care, Recovery Haven, all the healthcare professionals in Cork and Kerry, to catering staff and house keeping staff and the porters thank you.

A special thank you to Kerry Specialist Palliative Care Services, the day care staff and multidisciplinary teams and in particular the home care community team who strived to fulfil Deborah’s wish to be cared for in her terminal phase at home in her own house surrounded by her family. The kindness, the compassionate care, the professional expertise, the holistic support, the symptom control, the family support and psychological care, provided by this specialist team was phenomenal alongside her GP. To the local nurses who attended in the last 24 hours thank you and to Deborah’s closest and dearest sisters, sister in law’s and friends thank you.

Congratulations and well done to the West Kerry Under 14s and to Aaron Moriarty and his management team on winning Under 14 county championship in a hard fought battle with Mid Kerry in Austin Stack Park on Tuesday 7th July. The sides were level at end of normal time and were still locked together at end of extra time at 4-21 to 4-21. The game then went to penalties and the west emerged victorious on a score of 4 goals to 2. Over the course of a long campaign West Kerry defeated Eoghan Rua, Tralee District, Kenmare District, South Kerry, North Kerry and finally Mid Kerry and won every game.

Once again, this year, our Féile an Phráta has been fantastic fun with many super nights - tasting, analysing, fiery debating and socialising. In total, 57 Growers entered the eight area competitions in the past week, the 8 Finalists battled it out in the Final on Sunday 12 Jul. Ensuring the Competitions were run off without a hitch involved a total of 41 Judges, 18 other Volunteers and eight Publicans.

Irish Manuscripts.

A personal highlight from the recent Féile na Bealtaine, was a lecture on Irish Manuscripts by Prof. Pádraig Ó Macháin, Ollamh le Gaeilge in Ollscoil Chorcaí. In the Early Medieval period, high-level scholarly and intellectual exchange between Ireland and Europe was common. Indeed, as we take on the presidency of the EU over the next 6 months, there are many who would say that Ireland’s contribution to the formation of the ‘First Europe’ marked a high point both of Irish and of European achievement. The Irish, between the period of AD 600 and AD 850 enjoyed a reputation for their education and their scholarship in Greek and Latin, in Astronomy and Mathematics. The language used in these manuscripts for the greater part is Latin but many have Old Irish glosses and we see also Greek and even Hebrew, which shows the full range of Irish scholarship during those centuries.

While some of these books are held in Ireland, the majority of them are in libraries throughout England, Germany, Italy, France and Austria. While the most important collection of Irish manuscripts is held in the Stifstbibliothek in St. Gallen, Switzerland.

The earliest book written in Ireland is a psalter known as the Cathach of St. Columba which may have been written around AD 600 and was associated with the O’Donnell family in the north west of Ireland – also known as the Cenél Conaill. In the later Middle Ages, the book shrine and its contents became known as the Cathach, or “battler” and was carried three times sunwise around the Cenél Conaill before battle, it guaranteed victory. Today, the manuscript and its shrine remain the property of the current head of the O’Donnell family, who allows them to stay on deposit in the Library of the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin.

A well known story about the Cathach is often claimed to be the first reference to copyright laws anywhere in the world. The story tells us that in the 6th century, Columba visited his friend St. Finnian of Movilla Abbey, Co. Down and secretly copied one of his books. Finnian discovered the deed, and demanded the copy be returned. Columba refused and the dispute had to be decided by a local King. King Diarmait MacCerbaill gave the famous judgement, "To every cow belongs her calf, therefore to every

book belongs its copy. The judgement ruled in favour of Finnian, however, Columba refused to return the book . The disagreement eventually led to a battle in AD 560, referred to as the Battle of the Book, (The battle of Cúl Dreimhne, County Sligo), in which many men were killed, and as a result, Columba was exiled to Iona, there to win as many souls for Christ as his stubborn behaviour had lost.

Until recently it was believed that the Cathach was written on Calf skin, but DNA testing on some of the animal bristles still surviving in the vellum, shows, for the first time, that it was written on Red Deer skin.

The Dineen family, led by former Kerry Rose Emer Dineen, has launched the Fuel the Fight Against Cancer Raffle, with every cent raised going directly towards keeping Kerry Cancer Support Group's Healthlink Transport Service on the road for local cancer patients.

Emer first supported the charity during her year as Kerry Rose and always promised she would continue to champion its work. Now, together with her mother Margaret, father Padraig and sister Tara, she has brought together the support of businesses from across Kerry to create an incredible raffle with something for everyone.

The prize list includes a fantastic three-night stay at the new lodges at Sandy Feet Farm with full access to the farm, cosmetic treatments at CHRC, retail and dining vouchers, adventure and water sports experiences, beauty and wellness packages, entertainment tickets, luxury hampers and many more exciting prizes.

The raffle will be drawn on Saturday, 1st August, at the Castlegregory Agricultural Show, where Kerry Cancer Support Group will also host an information and awareness stand, giving visitors an opportunity to learn more about the charity's free services for people affected by cancer. We had the opportunity to speak to Aileen Ní Shé about the Ionad Ceardaíochta an Daingin, who is celebrating its 11th birthday this year. They have had a number of locations around the town, but have nestled into the corner of Sráid na Trá now. It is a very important space for artists, and promotes local artists. Plenty of Kerry art is to be seen around the world thanks to this little shop. The music of the street can be heard from the shop, and Aileen says her favourite thing about being in Daingean Uí Chúis is the people, the local people specifically.

Staying on Sráid na Trá, we stopped into O’Keeffes Pharmacy, a shop that has been open for 80 years! Inside in the little traditional shop we spoke to Criostóir and Colm, whilst a queue formed of both local loyal customers and visitors in search of antihistamines. The two agreed that sun cream and hangover cures were the most popular products sold in the shop. Thank goodness for Ibuprofen! Go in to them the next morning after a night out, there will be service as Gaelainn and a big smile on their faces behind the counter.

July is very much the month of Festivals and what a busy two weeks it’s been between Regattas and Summer Festivals and Events. Next up include: Brandon Half Marathon, 18th July; West Kerry Agricultural Show (Dingle), 19th July; Féile na Lughnasa, Clochán Bhreánnainn, 24th-26th July, and Féile Líos Póil, 1st – 3rd August, and Castlegregory Agricultural Show, 1st August.

Weekly events taking place for July include Tinteán Ceoil every Monday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm in Halla le Chéile, An Clochán, the Junction Bar Camp hosts a Trad session on Sunday afternoons, 12.30pm to 2.15pm, and the Rambling House is in The Clubrooms, Castlegregory, July 17th, 24th and 31st. The Dingle Craft Market is every Friday morning at the Holyground with the Castlegregory Country Market every Sunday morning in the West End Community Hall, West Main Street, Castlegregory. Slí Ceann Sléibhe Visitor Traffic Flows: A Kerry County Council (KCC) employee is now stationed each day from 10.30am to 4.00pm at Com Dhíneol, until 11th September, encouraging vehicles travelling anti-clockwise to visit Slí Cheann Sléibhe in a clockwise direction. New signage has also been introduced to support the work being done which is now clearly showing that no large vehicles – buses, campervans, caravans or lorries can continue on to Slí Cheann Sléibhe in the anti-clockwise direction. There is also a very clear directional sign at Com Dhíneol to support the recommendation to visitors by the KCC team.

However, Google Maps and Sat Navs are still directing visitors to Slí Cheann Sléibhe / Slea Head in the shortest possible way which is up and over the Classach bringing them against the flow of traffic. The most congested times are from approx. 1pm until after 3pm. The Kerry County Council employees are doing the best they can to manage the situation but we would ask you all, to please continue to advise visitors that they turn off their Sat Navs / Google Maps and follow the Kerry County Council and Wild Atlantic Way / WAW directional signs. This includes NOT using An Classach thus allowing the businesses along Ceann Sléibhe, Fahan, Dún Chaoin,An Clóthar, Baile an Fheirteáraigh, Baile na nGall agus An Fheothanach every opportunity to welcome visitors. Local access will be maintained as normal.

The new signage additions follow recent meetings and recommendations by Comharchumann Dhún Chaoin with Turasóireacht Chorca Dhuibhne / Dingle Peninsula Tourism and Kerry County Council, Corca Dhuibhne Infrastructure management and team, as a further step in managing the traffic flows along the Drive. No Public Toilets on Slí Ceann Sléibhe: Please be aware that there are no public toilets from Ceann Trá back into Dingle along the Slea Head Drive bringing issues to locations such as Com Dhíneol. Therefore, we again ask for your help in making visitors aware of this so that they can plan their Drive to spend time at attractions or places to eat/drink with toilet facilities. Turasóireacht Chorca Dhuibhne has been bringing this to the attention of Fáilte Ireland and Kerry County Council, and following recent meetings with Cllr. Robert Brosnan, site visits to Com Dhíneol and Slí Cheann Sléibhe, with KCC Engineer representatives have taken place. TCD/DPT would like to thank Cllr. Brosnan for addressing these growing concerns and to KCC for recognising the issues that they present. Please help us too, to advise our visitors, as they plan their trips, to ensure the best possible experiences across the whole Peninsula. Míle buíochas.
