January Is Not A Fresh Start – It’s A Threshold Irene Flannery January arrives with frost on the ground, light still scarce and the quiet understanding — at least in the natural world — that this is not a time for bold moves. Yet within hours of the year turning, our inboxes and screens tell a very different story. We are urged to upgrade ourselves, optimise our bodies, cleanse our systems and purchase our way into better health. Preferably by Tuesday. It’s a strange moment to be told to do more when everything around us is doing less. Because the body, unlike Amazon, does not operate on next-day delivery. While January marketing insists on a fresh start, the body is still carrying the weight of the year it has just lived. Stress doesn’t dissolve at midnight on December 31st. Neither do exhaustion, disrupted sleep, inflammation or the low-level tension that has become a background hum of modern life. Our ancestors understood this instinctively. Winter was not a time for reinvention — it was a time for survival, conservation and repair. Food was simpler. Movement was intentional, purposeful rather than performative. Energy was guarded carefully, because it had to last. No one emerged from midwinter demanding six new habits and a complete personality overhaul. So when people feel sluggish, heavy, foggy or emotionally flat in January, this is not a personal failure. It’s the body doing exactly what it has evolved to do: slow down, take stock and recover. Look outside. Trees are dormant, sap sits low and fields rest. Animals conserve energy, feeding on what is available rather than searching for novelty. In Ireland, January traditionally meant hearty soups, broths, stews, fermented foods, preserved vegetables, stored grains and bones. There were no “detoxes” — because nothing about Winter life was excessive enough to require one. Contrast that with today, where we are encouraged to punish our bodies for December’s excesses — many of which were enthusiastically promoted by the very same influencers now urging restraint. The "New Year, New Me" messaging is desperate, intense and needy. If it were a person, you’d cross the street to avoid them. It’s worth asking who benefits from this sense of urgency — because it certainly isn’t our health. Winter bodies are not broken Modern wellness culture treats Winter like an inconvenience to be hacked. Low energy is framed as laziness. Rest is suspicious. Appetite is something to override. Slowness is something to correct. But winter physiology is different by design. Metabolism shifts. Digestion changes. The nervous system seeks warmth, predictability and rhythm. Trying to force radical change in January is like planting seeds into frozen ground and then blaming the soil when nothing grows. The timing is wrong — not the intention. One of the great myths of our time is that health is something we are constantly failing at — and that the solution is a growing collection of powders, patches, challenges and programmes. All offer certainty. All promise results. And all quietly imply that your body would behave itself if you’d only follow the plan properly. Our ancestors, meanwhile, managed without any of this. They didn’t outsource their wellbeing to external authorities. They watched the land, the weather, their energy 6 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

and their appetite. Health was something tended daily, through routine and attention — not chased in dramatic bursts of motivation. Real health still works this way. It is built on foundations that are deeply unglamorous and rarely trend on social media. Regular meals stabilise blood sugar and prevent the energy crashes that leave people reaching for stimulants or sugar. Warm, cooked food reduces digestive strain and frees up energy for repair. Adequate protein supports muscle, bone strength and immune resilience — not just for appearance, but for ageing well. Sleep, perhaps the least negotiable foundation of all, cannot be hacked or supplemented. Without enough of it, everything else wobbles. Daylight helps regulate appetite, mood and circadian rhythm, even at this time of year. And consistency — the least exciting concept in the wellness world — tells the body it is safe, all is well. For most of us, responding to the body in January means eating regularly even when appetite feels dulled, choosing warm meals over rushed or raw food and including enough nourishment to feel steady rather than virtuous. It often means going to bed earlier without apology, getting outside during daylight hours even when you don’t feel like it and allowing routines to be repetitive rather than impressive. These choices don’t generate dramatic before-and-after photos, but they do something far more important: they create stability - and stability is what allows health to build quietly, not just in January, but throughout the year. In the old seasonal calendar, renewal didn’t belong to January. It belonged to Imbolc, when the light begins to return and energy subtly starts to shift. Change doesn’t need to be forced. It arrives when the conditions are right. January is the pause that makes that possible. Rather than asking “What should I fix?” — a question heavily sponsored by consumer culture — a more useful question might be: what supported me this year gone by, and what depleted me? Am I nourishing myself regularly or reactively? What can be simplified rather than added? This is not exciting but it is effective. Spring will come, it always does. Energy will rise and appetite will change. Motivation will return — without coercion or discount codes. We do not need fixing right now; we need compassion. Perhaps the most radical act at the start of a new year is to stop taking health advice from algorithms, influencers and the media designed to sell us things and to start listening to the body that has already carried us this far. Once Upon a Time in the Southwest Ted Creedon Tragedy on Connor-Hill -Kerry Evening Post

07 December 1867

A tragic accident occurred last Wednesday night on the Connor-Hill Road whereby Daniel Morrison, of the Brandon Coast Guard station, and Michael Murphy, a well-to-do farmer of the Brandon area, lost their lives. It appears that Morrison, and another Coast Guard named Seavers, were returning to Brandon from Dingle on Mr. Murphy’s car. Suddenly, the horse took fright and galloped along that dangerous road at a rapid pace. Somehow, the left wheel of the car came in contact with the low protective stone wall, on the left side of the road, and was upturned. The three men were hurled across the road against the rocky cliff, and the horse and car crashed down on them. Murphy was killed instantly while Morrison survived for a short period before expiring. Seavers was jammed by the car from his hips down and was unable to move. He remained like that for seven hours. Some women came across the accident and tried to release Seavers but suffered injuries from the dying horse’s flailing legs. So, they went to Dingle for help and raised the alarm at John Flaherty’s house. He, along with his son and two workmen headed up the hill immediately where they found Morrison and Murphy quite dead. John Seavers was all but dead, having been seven hours of a dreary winter’s night in his terrible position. Morrison’s back was broken and his ribs driven in on his heart. Murphy’s nose was split and his arm broken. The horse’s head was mangled and one of its eyes was clear out of its socket. Flaherty’s humane conduct was beyond praise.

Dingle Has Moved! -Aberdeen Press and Journal 28 December 1767 A few days ago, died, at Skibbereen, near Dingle, Darby Neal. aged 117. He retained his sight and senses to the end.

11 Drowned in Dingle Bay

Agrarian Outrages -Dublin Daily Express 06 November 1888 On the night of November 15th, 1887, a cow belonging to farmer Michael Fitzgerald of Ballyoughtera, (sic) County Kerry, was removed from her cowhouse. The animal was driven about two miles through the fields and lanes to a secluded part of Smerwick Harbour. There, a large heavy rock was tied around her neck, and she was forced into deep water where she drowned. On the 14th of March 1886, a cow, the property of Timothy Sheehan, of Tarmons, Tarbert, County Kerry, was mutilated by having its throat cut and the hamstrings of one of its hind legs severed. (The timing of these two stories is very strange. The Dublin Daily Express published them in 1888, but the incident above occurred in 1886 and the first incident, in Smerwick Harbour, occurred in 1887.)

More Bodies Washed Ashore -Cork Constitution 07 January 1892 At Castlegregory yesterday, Captain Thomas Spring and a jury resumed the inquest on the bodies of six seamen, the crew of the Carnarvon schooner Catherine Richards. She was wrecked in Ballyheigue Bay on Thursday morning, 31st of December 1891, and the bodies of her crewmen were washed ashore near Castlegregory on Friday or Saturday.

A resident in Swinden, Wiltshire, recently wrote to our paper about his experiences in Ireland as a youngster. “I was brought up in Kerry and the “Wren boys” always visited our house on St. Stephen’s Day and it was always the same songs every year : The wren, the wren, the King of all Birds, St. Stephen’s Day was caught in the furze; Come give us a bomber, or give us a cake or give us a copper for charity’s sake.” (A bomber?) The pursuit and slaughter of the wren, however, is recorded not only in Ireland, but in the Isle of Man, England and also in France, It is believed that the origin of this practice is attributed to the fact that the early Christian missionaries were displeased about the level of reverence paid to the wren by Druids and their followers.

The Bell of Saint Mary’s

A fishing boat was upset in Dingle Bay last Monday night, when the entire unfortunate crew, consisting of eleven persons, were drowned. Five of the bodies were washed ashore at Inch Island on Friday and have been interred.

(No information on the home port of the crew. Was there a storm? Was it a foreign boat? How did the paper know there were eleven on board when only five found?)

Ballyferriter Church Destroyed. -Freeman’s Journal 17 February 1883 The Catholic Church in Ballyferriter was lately almost totally destroyed. It is a sad sight to look at and for the poor devoted people of Ballyferriter an unpleasant memorial of the storm that raged here for the past three days. The storm was the severest in living memory. This church was dedicated to St. Vincent de Paul in 1855 by the late Dr. Moriarty, Bishop of Kerry, about twelve months after the foundation was laid. Although there was some elaborate ornamentation, it was a rare structure for so poor and wild a parish. The plan of St. Vincent’s was drawn up by the eminent architect J. J. McCarthy. The plan entailed too much ornamentation on the poor and populace parish of Ballyferriter.

There used to be a custom in Dingle that whenever there was a sudden storm, when the fishing fleet was in the bay, St. Mary’s Bell would ring out to encourage the community to pray for the protection of those at sea. This touchingly beautiful practice was suggested by Dr. Moriarty, Bishop of Kerry, at the dedication of St. Mary’s splendid Catholic church, in 1865. (This is a nice story but an odd one. Why did the Chronicle write ‘used to be’ only three years after St. Mary’s was dedicated?) (A story about a Spanish coin, discovered in a potato field on the Great Blasket, appeared in a previous issue. A reader wondered how it got there and suggested, “It was probably attached to seaweed, used as fertiliser, or in a load of sand brought up to the field from the beach”.) Ingredients drop of oil 1 whole chicken, cut into pieces, or six chicken thighs 1 large onion, chopped 2 carrots, diced 1 sticks celery, diced 4 cloves garlic, crushed 100g pearl barley 1 ½ Litres of chicken stock a few sprigs thyme and rosemary salt and Black pepper To finish a squeeze of lemon handful of chopped flat leaf parsley

Method Heat the oil in a large pot over a medium heat. Season the chicken lightly and brown it on all sides. Remove and set aside. Add the onion, carrot, and celery to the pot with a pinch of salt. Cook gently for eight to ten minutes until softened. Add the garlic and cook for one minute. Stir in the barley, then return the chicken to the pot. Pour over the stock and add the thyme and rosemary. Bring to a gentle simmer, cover, and cook for forty five minutes until the chicken is tender and the barley is soft. Dingle Notes Richie Williams TRAWLER RESCUE. One of the greatest stories and achievements of 2025 must be the safe rescue by the Coast Guard Helicopter crew of all the 14 members of the crew from the trawler Fastnet which went aground at the entrance to Dingle Harbour on Sunday morning December 14th. Congratulations to all the Emergency Services Personnel local and national in the operation in such difficult weather conditions. The trawler now showing signs of damage from the rocks is still wedged under the Dingle Lighthouse building in Beenbawn awaiting suitable conditions and equipment to release it for transfer to a repair outlet or dismantling yard whichever is the final decision of owners or insurers. Dingle Sea and Cliff Rescue Unit were worthy recipients of a Radio Kerry Local Heroes Award for 2025 in December. UPCOMING EVENTS. January 6th is the traditional Day for Nollaig Mór na mBan and The Dingle Fife and Drum Band intend to mark the occasion by parading through the streets around 5pm that evening and invite others to join with them in the celebrations. A number of local restaurants and food outlets will offer special menus that day but advance booking is advised to avoid disappointment or time

West Kerry GAA Michael Kennedy As the year draws to a close, it’s time to review the past season for West Kerry teams. West Kerry Seniors,having defeated South Kerry ,lost out to Dingle in the quarter final of the county championship in a hard fought entertaining game in front of a large crowd in Austin Stack Park. Despite losing, West Kerry showed that they were once again a force to be reckoned with in Kerry football. Having made a remarkable second half recovery West Kerry were pipped at the post by Kenmare in the U21 Championship. The “one loss and your out” format discriminates against district sides as our lads were only getting into their stride as game progressed and lacked the familiarity of a town side used to playing together. West Kerry minors had a good campaign and qualified from their group before losing out to St Kierans, the eventual winners, in their quarter final game. A bad start left them at a big disadvantage. Lots of potential here nevertheless. West Kerry fielded two teams at under 16. Cup team lost out to Eoghan Rua in a group play off. Shield team gained valuable experience at this level. Thanks to all those involved with these teams including management, selectors, sponsors and supporters. It’s very clear that there’s a rich vein of footballing talent in the district. This is a special weekend for West Kerry football as Daingean Uí Chúis and An Ghaeltacht line out for their All Ireland Semifinals. Both have had a remarkable year to date and we wish them well going forward. Featured are the West Kerry minors, West Kerry Seniors, West Kerry under 21's in 2025.

END OF AN ERA The community of Camp are deeply saddened and shocked at the passing of local publican, Thomas Ashe. Thomas passed away peacefully on Christmas Eve. The passing of Thomas is likened to the end of an era in Camp. Thomas was a publican at the helm of Ashe's Pub in Camp for his entire adult life, carrying on a family tradition handed down through four generations of the Ashe family. Thomas was highly respected and loved by everyone, he will be greatly missed. Deepest sympathy to Marian, James and Padraig and all the Ashe family and indeed the community of Camp. Barra Ó˙Briain The years from 1920 to 1929 are chronicled within this book and it provides a wonderful insight into the very significant challenges faced by the people of Dingle and its surrounding district throughout the 1920s. The decade was a period of transition from the turbulence of English occupation to a civil war and the emergence of self-government. The contribution of individuals, in their determinaton to ease the plight of many, whether in the town of Dingle or in the surrounding district, was quite extraordinary, and they certainly reaped very notable improvements within the town, in their caring for the sick and poor, assisting fishing and farming and the re-distribution of the land following the departure of the local landed gentry. The decade was notable too for the efforts made at local and national level in promoting and preserving the Irish language and enhancing its status, within the disrtict, against the remnants of anglicised schooling and the detrimental impact of emigration.
