Let’s Go Nuts: Chestnuts Are Back in Season! Irene Flannery
They are also naturally high in fibre, which supports digestion, blood sugar balance and metabolic health. Their nutritional profile reads almost like a prescription for vitality: vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, and folate — all essential for energy production, nervous system health and cognitive support. Uniquely among nuts, chestnuts also provide vitamin C. Thanks to their protective outer skins, a good portion of this vitamin remains intact even after roasting, making them a surprisingly nutritious Winter treat. At a time when our soils have become depleted through intensive cultivation, chestnuts still offer a valuable array of minerals. They are particularly rich in calcium, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium and zinc — all of which play vital roles in bone health, heart function, immune support and overall wellbeing. Because they are harvested seasonally and often sold fresh or minimally processed, chestnuts offer a refreshing nutritional contrast to many of the long-stored or imported foods that dominate supermarket shelves at this time of year.
Buying, Storing & Preparing Sweet Chestnuts Sweet chestnuts are usually sold dried, but from November onwards you can often find them fresh, vacuum-packed or ready-cooked in pouches. If buying fresh, look for nuts that feel firm and heavy. Avoid any with mould, soft spots or a hollow feel when lightly squeezed. Store fresh chestnuts in the fridge just as you would store vegetables; they typically keep for up to two weeks. Did you know that, just like fruit and vegetables, every nut has its own season? Fresh nuts are almost a rarity in Ireland. Most of what we find in shops comes dried, powdered, puréed or canned. Nuts generally have a high moisture content and, as a result, do not store well unless dried first. But right now — from late autumn through Christmas — sweet edible chestnuts are in their prime. Sweet Chestnuts (Castanea sativa) grow on trees related to oak and beech, and they should never be confused with Horse Chestnuts (Aesculus hippocastanum), which are unrelated and inedible. Horse chestnuts contain chemicals that are toxic to humans though some animals — deer, cows and horses — have the digestive enzymes to break them down safely. It’s important to be able to distinguish between the two before you head out gathering. Sweet chestnuts are wrapped in a dense, spiky outer casing that looks like a little green hedgehog or sea urchin. Horse chestnuts, on the other hand, have a paler shell with fewer, shorter spikes and more space between them. Once the outer casing is removed, it becomes trickier to tell them apart — both contain the smooth, shiny brown seeds many of us knew as conkers, a nostalgic childhood treasure.
Chestnuts Roasting on an open fire, oven or airfryer! Roasting (oven or air fryer): Soak the chestnuts in cold water for 30 minutes. Score a slit or cross on the rounded side. Roast in a hot oven (or air fryer) for 20–25 minutes. Wrap in a tea towel for a few minutes to steam slightly — this makes peeling much easier. If you’re roasting them on an open fire, prepare as above, then cook them in a long-handled pan over hot embers (not flames), shaking often for 10–15 minutes until the shells split. Wrap in a tea towel for a few minutes to loosen the skins, then peel and enjoy. Dried chestnuts must be soaked overnight before cooking and are a delicious addition to soups, stews, stuffing, risottos and sauces, adding a subtle sweetness and depth. Chestnut flour — naturally gluten-free — is increasingly available and lends wonderful sweetness and softness to cakes, breads, pancakes, and cookies. Blend it with other flours to balance flavour and texture.
Horse Chestnuts
Chestnut purée pairs beautifully with chocolate, works in festive desserts and can even be stirred into porridges for a rich, comforting breakfast.
While not edible, horse chestnuts have a long history in herbal medicine. Standardised horse chestnut seed extract is often used to support circulation, thanks to a compound called aescin, which helps maintain the integrity and tone of the vascular system.
In the midst of Winter, when we crave warmth, nourishment and foods that feel grounding and comforting, chestnuts arrive right on cue. They’re wholesome, versatile and naturally aligned with the season — perfect for everything from simple roasting to hearty cooking.
Horse chestnut seed extract is traditionally indicated for conditions where veins struggle to return blood from the legs back to the heart. These include varicose veins, leg pain, ankle swelling, itching, haemorrhoids and night-time leg cramping. Some evidence also supports its use in certain cases of male infertility linked to circulation.
So, this Christmas, why not add chestnuts to your shopping list? Whether you toss them into a stew, blend them into a soup, bake them into festive treats or roast them simply with a sprinkle of sea salt, you’ll be giving your body a delicious nutritional boost — and keeping a lovely, old-world culinary tradition alive.

However, it’s essential to stress that raw horse chestnut seeds, bark, flowers and leaves are poisonous to humans. Sweet Chestnuts Although many of us associate sweet chestnuts with Christmas and roasting by the fire, these nuts were once a staple food across Europe — long before the arrival of the potato. Their uniquely high starchy carbohydrate content made them a reliable source of energy in Winter, especially in mountainous regions where grain was difficult to grow. Sweet chestnuts contain significantly less fat than most nuts, yet the fats they do provide are mainly heart-friendly monounsaturated fats, similar to those found in olive oil. Rock Fall on the Conor Pass

On Thursday night, a large section of the overhanging rockface on the Conor Pass crashed down on the public road, completely blocking it up and preventing horses and cars from passing. The obstruction has been removed; it was blown to pieces with the use of dynamite.
Ferocious Storm - Tralee Chronicle 30 November 1850 During the recent ferocious storm the following vessels have been wrecked or lost: the schooner Brichetta from Naples was wrecked on the Maharees, with the loss of one life, the remainder of the crew were saved. She was carrying a cargo of wheat for T. Osborne, Limerick. The Medusa of Sunderland, also with wheat for Limerick, was wrecked in Smerwick Harbour with the loss of one crew member. She was a beautiful brig that became stranded at first. The lost crew member was washed overboard just as she struck the sand and, with the waves being mountainous high, he was not seen again. The crew were saved thanks to the great exertions of the Coast Guard and the local community. Shortly after the rescue the ship was smashed in a thousand pieces and not as much of the wheat remaining as would feed a wren. A vessel, supposed to be laden with wheat, was wrecked at Bull Head with the loss of all crew members. A foreign schooner, laden with wheat, was wrecked at Kilshannig, about four miles east of Brandon. Twelve of the thirteen crew brought safely ashore, in a state of nudity, by the heroic efforts of the Castlegregory Coast Guard. Another vessel, believed to be Italian, was dashed to pieces at Dunquin with all hands lost.

A Spanish Coin From The Great Blasket - Tralee Chronicle 10 July 1868 A few days ago, the Rev. P. Mangan P. P. Ballyferriter, showed me an ancient silver coin, somewhat larger than a five-shilling piece, which was sent to him as a present from one of his parishioners. The coin was inscribed on both sides in Latin. When the text was translated the obverse stated, ‘Phillip IV, by the grace of God, King of Spain and the Indies, Rex 1655’. The reverse was translated as, ‘Archduke of Austria and Duke of Burgundy’ (some text illegible). The coin was found on the big (sic) Blasket Island, off our western coast where some of the residents were sowing potatoes this year. It is very remarkable but a positive fact that every time the islanders dig this very same field, they find some Spanish coins turning up there.
The schooner Tartar, of Dublin, with oats for Liverpool, ran upon her anchor in Tralee Bay and breached the hull. Because of the amount of water she took in, following the breech, she sank. (No report on the crew.) A French vessel was wrecked off the Great Blasquet (sic).
Tralee Petty Sessions - Kerry Evening Post 10 August 1898 At the Tralee Petty Sessions in August, Mary Dee was summoned by Constable Burke for cruelty to her geese. The constable found the defendant plucking live geese. The Magistrate said he had been made aware that this practice prevailed in the district and he gave instructions to the police to be aware of it. The defendant was fined six pence and was told that if she was found repeating the offence the fines would be increased. On the same day Ellen Driscoll was fined for the same offence.
Phillip IV
Michael Neill was summoned by Sergeant Noble for cruelty to a donkey. The Sergeant found the defendant driving a donkey while it was suffering from a sore breast. The defendant said he had not noticed it until the sergeant called his attention to it. Neill was fined one shilling.
(Some interesting and surprising information about Phillip IV. He was born in 1605. He married in 1615, at ten years of age, to Elisabeth of France, age 13. Phillip was encouraged to take mistresses, mainly actresses, by whom he is known to have fathered at least 30 children.
Mary Jones was charged with a similar offence. Her donkey had a bad sore on its back, and she must have known about it as she had it covered with sack cloth. She was fined two shillings and sixpence. Two others, Patrick Whitstone and Ellen Slattery, were charged with the same offence and fined one shilling each.
He also had 10 children with his wife, Elizabeth. She died in 1644 and three years later, aged 44, Phillip married his niece, Maria Anna of Austria, who was then aged 14. She bore him 5 children but only two survived. Phillip died in 1665 aged 60.)

Charged with Dingle Murder -Cork Constitution 23 May 1892 At the Petty Sessions in Dingle Courthouse, before Mr. Bull, RM, Patrick Sullivan, also known as ‘Darkey’, was brought up on remand, and charged with having caused the death of Edmond O’Flaherty, at Dingle, on the 27th of November last.

After hearing the evidence for the prosecution, his Worship said he considered a prima facie case had been made out. He returned the accused for trial at the next Kerry Assizes. The prisoner made no statement. Bail of £200 was accepted.

Creamy Fish Pie with Lemon & Dill Mash Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School
For the base: In a large pan, melt the butter and gently cook the onion, carrot and garlic for 8–10 minutes until soft. Stir in the flour, add in the, milk and cream. Add the bay leaf and simmer for 5 minutes until it thickens. Add in the mustard, lemon juice, peas, salt and pepper. Remove the bay leaf. Add in the fish and prawns. Cook for a few minutes. Season well. Spoon the filling into a baking dish. Top evenly with the lemon–dill mash, using a fork to create little ridges. Bake at 180°C for about 20-25 minutes, until bubbling and lightly golden on top. Bain Taitneamh As!!!

Ingredients For the mash topping: 900g potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks 50g butter 100ml milk (or more as needed) zest of 1 lemon small handful of dill, chopped salt and pepper For the filling: 500g mixed white fish (haddock, hake, pollock), cut into chunks 150g cooked prawns (optional but lovely) 1 onion, finely diced 1 carrot, finely diced 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 2 tbs. flour 450ml fish or vegetable stock 150ml milk 100ml cream 1 bay leaf 1 tsp Dijon mustard 100g frozen peas Juice of ½ lemon Salt and pepper

Kerry Heritage Award 2025 Presented To Sheila Mulcahy
The Kerry Heritage Award – which is presented each year by the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society – has been awarded for 2025 to a historian, author and founder of a west Kerry secondary school, Sheila Mulcahy. The presentation of the Kerry Heritage Award was made at a ceremony at the Rose Hotel in Tralee on Sunday afternoon. The award is presented annually by the Society to recognise individuals who have made a significant contribution to heritage and history in Kerry. A native of Cloghane, Sheila Mulcahy studied French at UCC and during postgraduate work in Paris, she became a close friend of Killarney native, Janie McCarthy, the famed heroine of some five escape lines during the Second World War. In 1956, Sheila married Waterford man Aidan Mulcahy and accompanied him to Nigeria. Having established a mission school in conjunction with the SMA fathers, they returned to west Kerry and created Meánscoil an LeithTriuigh in their family home and property in 1961. From the initial enrolment of 40 students in Pearse Hall, Castlegregory, their school has developed into the present-day campus in Castlegregory, where 160 students are on the roll.
In 2005, Pope Benedict bestowed a great honour on Aidan and Sheila, creating them Knights of the Order of St Sylvester in recognition of their immense contribution and service to community, the Church and education in Africa and Kerry. The following year the new school was officially opened. Sheila was part and parcel of the re-establishment of Cloghane as a Gaeltacht. Furthermore, she was instrumental in the cultivation of our culture as evidenced in the celebrated CD, ‘Tobair na Sinsir: the Ancestral Well'. Sheila's work continues in the Active Retired Group and as organist and director of the Parish Choir in St Brendan's Church, Cloghane. Speaking at the event on Sunday, the President of the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society, Tony Bergin said: ‘We are delighted to be recognising Sheila’s enormous contribution to the county and wish her well in the future. Sheila is a former member of the Council of our society and continues to play a key role in promoting the history and heritage of her locality.’

The Fair Deal Scheme What is the Nursing Home Support Scheme? You can apply for financial support to help pay for the cost of care in a nursing home through the Nursing Homes Support Scheme, also known as the Fair Deal scheme. The Fair Deal scheme is managed by the Health Service Executive (HSE). Under Fair Deal, you pay a certain amount towards the cost of your care and the HSE pays the rest. Fair Deal covers approved private nursing homes, voluntary nursing homes and public nursing homes. Who can apply? You must be ordinarily resident in Ireland and need long-term nursing home care to apply for the scheme. You need to be approved for Fair Deal before you can get funding for a nursing home. You can apply for a Nursing Home Loan if you have assets including land or property. With a nursing home loan, you can postpone paying for your care until after your death, using your assets to secure the loan. How does the Fair Deal scheme work? When you apply, your care needs are assessed by the HSE to confirm that long-term nursing home care is the most appropriate option for you. The HSE also assesses your financial situation to see how much you can afford to pay towards your nursing home care. The HSE then pays the balance between what you can pay for your care and what the nursing home charges for providing that care. Your assets, such as savings and property, are taken into account when assessing your financial situation. What does Fair Deal cover? The scheme covers long-term nursing home care only. The Fair Deal covers: •
Accommodation and food

Nursing and personal care
•
Laundry service
•
Basic aids and appliances needed to support you with everyday living
Other goods and services may be available under schemes such as the medical card or Drugs Payment Scheme. It does not cover short-term care such as respite, convalescent or day-care or extra fees charged by the nursing home for services like hairdressing, therapies or activities What is involved in applying for Fair Deal? There are 4 steps to the Fair Deal application process: 1: Fill in the application form, which you can pick up in your local CIC or print from the intranet 2: Complete a Care Needs Assessment 3: Complete a Financial Assessment
If your assets include land or property, the 7.5% contribution based on these assets may be deferred and paid to Revenue after your death. You can defer paying the 7.5% contribution by applying for an optional nursing home loan. How is rental income from your home calculated? If you own your home and are renting it out to a tenant while you are in a nursing home, you can apply to keep 100% of this rental income, instead of having to pay some of it towards your nursing home care. This means you can keep all of the rental income from renting your own home. Your home is your principal private residence. If the property you are renting is not your own home, you must pay 80% of the rental income to nursing home care. What is the 3-year cap? Some assets are only included in the financial assessment for the first 3 years you are in care. This is known as the ‘3-year cap'. It means that you pay a 7.5% contribution based on the value of certain assets for up to 3 years. These assets can include your home, the proceeds of the sale of your home and your farm or business. After 3 years, you will not give any further payment based on these assets, even if you are still getting long-term nursing home care. All other assets will be taken into account for as long as you are in care. If you are part of a couple, you will pay a 3.75% contribution based on your home for a maximum of 3 years. Your total contribution over the 3 years is capped at 11.25% of the property's value. If both partners are in care, the total contribution is capped at 22.5%. How does the 3-year cap apply to farms and business owners? Family-owned farms and businesses can be included in the ‘3-year cap' if they meet some conditions. You must apply to the HSE to appoint your family successor who will commit to running the farm or business for at least 6 years. Your farm or business must have been actively run by you, your partner or your proposed family successor for at least 3 of the last 5 years A charge in favour of the HSE will be placed on the chargeable property of a business or farm Your successor must be aged 18 or older and must be your partner, your relative or your partner’s relative. Speak with your local Citizens Information Centre for more information on this matter. What financial safeguards are in place? As part of the Financial Assessment, the following safeguards are in place: •
You will not pay more than the actual cost of care
•
You keep a personal allowance of 20% of your income or 20% of the maximum rate of the State Pension (Non-Contributory), whichever is more
•
If you have a spouse or partner remaining at home, they will be left with 50% of the couple’s income or the maximum rate of the State Pension (Non-Contributory), whichever is more

What is the financial assessment?
The Nursing Home Loan is an optional element of the Fair Deal scheme. It is an option if the person in nursing home care has assets including land and property.
The Financial Assessment works out how much you can pay towards your nursing home care. The HSE will pay the remaining balance of the weekly cost of your care e.g. if the total weekly cost of your care is €1,000 and your weekly contribution is €300, the HSE will pay €700. This payment by the HSE is called State support. The Financial Assessment looks at all of your income and assets. If you are part of a couple, the assessment will be based on half of your combined income and assets. The assessment will look at assets that you have transferred since applying for State support or in the 5 years before the application. For example, any land, money or property you have given to another person. How much do you pay towards your care? After assessing your income and assets, the Financial Assessment will work out how much you pay towards your care. You pay 80% of your income (less some deductions), and 7.5% of the value of your assets per year. The first €36,000 of your assets, or €72,000 for a couple, are not counted in the Financial Assessment. 18 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
If you are approved for the Nursing Home Loan, the contribution based on your assets (land or property) can be postponed. This means the HSE will pay the money to the nursing home for you, and it will be collected after your death or after the sale of all or part of your asset. In certain circumstances the payment may be deferred for a longer period, for example, if a spouse or partner or your former carer is still living in your home. For anyone needing information, advice or have an advocacy issue, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information team in Kerry on 0818 07 7860, they will be happy to assist and make an appointment if necessary. Over the last few months we have been working on an exciting project and we started recording last week. In conjunction with Tús Maith, Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne we have almost finished recording a collection of Christmas songs and tunes relating to Christmas. We wanted to celebrate the strong traditions we have in Corce Dhuibhne by using some of our fabulous singers and musicians to create a West Kerry version of some of the Christmas songs and tunes and make them readily available to the public. We are very happy to announce that the recordings will be available free to the public from the 14/12. They will be available on our YouTube Channel, we hope you all enjoy them. Dingle New-Music Choir & Orchestra To Perform Two Festive Concerts “Words make you think. Music makes you feel” - E.Y. Harburg. As Harburg says, without relying on language, music can express feelings. Its moment-to-moment quality, an art that exists in time, not in space, has a narrative quality. It has been a journey for us all in the choir and orchestra for more than ten years. Nuair a thagaimíd le chéile chun chleachtadh, ardaíonn sé ár gcroí go hard na bhflaitheas, go háirithe ag an dtráth seo bliana. In this year’s festive concert, the Dingle New-Music Choir and Orchestra will share the stage with the talented students of Coláiste Íde boarding school. When we meet at choir practice, especially at this time of the year, we feel that singing together brings a uniquely uplifting sense of community and shared purpose. Equally inspiring is the sound from a tapestry of instruments: in an orchestra every instrument tells a story and every instrument is different. We feel as we collaborate, beauty happens.
We would like to share this joy with you this Christmas in two concerts. On the 14th of December children can enjoy and experience the choir and orchestra in a matinee performance, free of charge for children. The accompanying adults can purchase a ticket from Walsh’s or Grogan’s Pharmacies. On the 17th of December the choir and orchestra will perform an extended concert of pieces from Carl Stamitz, J.S. Bach, Humperdinck and pieces of well-known traditional carols. Stamitz was a prominent representative of the second generation of the Mannheim School. His Flute Concerto in G major, Op.29 will be performed in full with soloist Dearbhla Grogan on the Flute in a new arrangement by Gábor Péli, music director. A Concerto is a delicate interaction of the solo instrument and the orchestra. New arrangements of traditional carols will also feature in the concert as well as the Evening Prayer from Hansel and Gretel’s opera. Together, the choir and orchestra create moments that resonate long after the final note fades. Their combined sound is warm, expressive, and deeply moving—especially during the Christmas season, when music holds the power to bring comfort, joy, and togetherness. This concert is not just a performance; it is a celebration of the positive spirit that arises when people join their talents and hearts to share music with their community. Join us, and experience the magic that happens when voices and instruments unite in festive harmony. Kerry Archaeological & Historical Society Launches Annual Journal And Kerry Magazine 2025 The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council was the guest of honour at Tralee Library recently for the launch of the 2025 editions of two popular publications from the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society. Cllr Michael Foley was present for the publication of the 2025 Journal of the Society as well as this year’s Kerry Magazine, both of which are now on sale across the county and online.

Cllr Foley said: “I very much look forward to this year’s edition of the Kerry Magazine which continues to be a very popular publication for Kerry people at home and abroad. I know that it is widely read by Kerry people all over the globe and it is the ideal Christmas gift. The magazine, edited by Edel Codd, provides a wide selection of articles from across the whole spectrum of history and heritage in the county and, I am sure, will prove as popular as ever this year.

Where Water Flows There Is Energy: Thomas O’Donoghue: Dingle Miller 1847-1911 Dan Graham In the early nineteenth century Dingle town was described as being remote, presenting challenges for food production and industrial developments. Specifically, in response to this shortfall, entrepreneurs of Dingle constructed and developed flax, timber, wool, corn and flour mills which harnessed the water power resources of the Milltown and Mall rivers to further economic progress for the local community.

Tattersall of London which assisted with the milling process. This machine was ideal for use in smaller mills such as Dingle which were powered by water or gasoline.
One entrepreneur who significantly contributed to the development of Dingle was Thomas O’Donoghue, miller of Main Street and Gortanora Mills Spa Road. In 1879, O’ Donoghue married Sarah E.A. Curry [1860-1936] of Glin Co Limerick. Her father was the noted Gaelic scholar Professor Eugene O’ Curry of Doonaha, Co Clare. Their marriage led to the birth of nine children –six boys and three girls who excelled in legal and medical professions. By the latter half of the 19th century the O’Donoghue family had established a large hardware business and a public house on Main Street. They also built a large four-story corn and timber mill on an acre of ground at Gortanora townland which was surrounded by a ten-foot-high masonry solid wall.
Advertisement for ‘Midget’ Mill Profits The milling area was served by a large timber bladed water wheel with associated leather belting and three pairs of quern stones. The hydro power of this wheel was supplied by the mill race channel of the Mall River on its descent from the Conor Hill area to Dingle harbour. The water wheel was used for the greater part of the year and in the dry season was supplemented by a dynamo gas suction engine of 75 horse power/ 60 amperes. The dynamo was the first generator capable of producing electricity to meet the power and light requirements for the mill. As a result, the Gortanora mill had a self-sufficient electric lighting system–unique to Dingle town. O’Donoghue’s vision aimed to provide Dingle streets with an urgently needed public lighting framework using copper cable that was stored at the mill. However, this vision did not materialise and the planned work was later realised under the direction of the Houlihan family. In conjunction with the successful milling operation the O’ Donoghue hardware and public house businesses prospered on Main Street. An adjacent yard housed stores for coal, flour, timber and grain hardware goods. Stables were also provided. Such enterprises employed many people in an emigration ridden population. O’Donoghue expanded his interests and became involved in the social and political life of Dingle and its environs. He became an outspoken advocate for Dingle issues at many levels. Some of his commitment to diverse activities included the following; Steward of the annual Dingle Horse Race Festival, Chairman of Dingle Harbour Commissioners, President of the United Irish Society in Kerry (1895), Chairman of the Dingle Dispensary Committee, member of the Dingle Ratepayers Committee, and a Director of the Tralee Dingle and Light Railway Line [D&TLR].

The mill complex housed several diverse elements all contributing to the growing need for commodities. There was a large shed of imported Canadian timber with various saw benches, circular saws, planing machines and a portable forge. Coal deposits from collieries in the United Kingdom were stored. O’Donoghue become the first representative for Dingle on the Kerry County Council. However, he severed connections after three years with the council due to his perceptions of its mismanagement. Furthermore, his views on the continuing mismanagement of the D&TLR were well known. He alleged that Tralee millers and merchants sought to keep the Dingle section of the railway line underdeveloped and economically non-viable. Sadly, on October 13th 1911, Thomas O’Donoghue died suddenly at 64 years, following an operation at Jervis Street Hospital, Dublin. His funeral mass was held at St Mary's Catholic Church, Dingle, he was interred at the local cemetery. Mrs O’Donoghue relocated to Dublin to live in a new home aptly named Gortanora House. Mrs O’Donoghue was buried in Glasnevin cometary. O’ Donoghue’s personal estate in both Ireland and the United Kingdom
came to £136,358, and with his death, family enthusiasm for the business diminished. On August 14th 1912 the O’Donoghue business empire came to auction under the direction of Mr John Moore and unfortunately the mill business realised only £1065 and was purchased by a syndicate of Tralee mill owners. No upkeep of the Gortanora Mill was undertaken and by 1915 was an empty shell. Eventually, the Dingle Creamery used O’Donoghue’s storehouses on Spa Road, and the site is now used by Kerry Agribusiness. The demise of the milling business was described as the greatest economic blow Dingle had sustained. Fortunately, Mr John Curran (grandfather of current owners) who was then living at Main Street, purchased the O’Donoghue home, public house and associated enterprises. Today, the pub continues under the management and direction of the Curran family. The continuing efforts to provide Dingle Streets with public electric lighting system would now transfer to the capable hands of the Houlihan family of Strand Street and Avondale. Sin scéal éile.

Dingle’s first Rolling Lights Parade Don’t stow away the tractors just yet - Áiseanna na hÓige is organising Dingle’s first ever Rolling Lights Parade that’s taking place on Sunday, December 21st. Owners of tractors, along with trucks, vans, motorbikes or bicycles, are asked to deck their vehicles with lights and decorations and show them off in style one more time, in aid of a very good cause. Registration is taking place at the old fish farm (former seal sanctuary) on the N86 at 4pm. Participants are reminded to have up-to-date tax and insurance and a driver’s licence, From there, the illuminated convoy will make its way into Dingle via the Mail Road, over the Mall, up Main Street, out to Milltown Bridge, and back in the Quay Road, completing the route twice before coming to an end on the Mail Road. All proceeds go to Áiseanna na hÓige’s Children and Family Support Services to help it continue to serve the community by providing year-round, affordable childcare and free family support to families all over the Dingle Peninsula. Áiseanna na hÓige is also inviting other businesses and community organisations to the part in the parade - a great way to showcase their business and celebrate the variety of local enterprises. There will be prizes for the ‘Best Dressed Vehicle’ - so get creative with those fairly lights and tinsel. This community event is being supported by Údarás na Gaeltachta and Dingle Chamber of Commerce and features in its festive programme of events that are taking place throughout the festive period in Dingle. Hot chocolate and home-made treats will be available to buy at the Marina area during the parade while enjoying the sound of Dingle Brownies singing Christmas carols. OBITUARY Brendan McCormack, Glendine, Camp, and formerly of Derrylin, Co.Fermanagh passed away peacefully, at home on Sunday 16th November. surrounded by his loving family. Beloved husband to Peggy and wonderful father to his nine children Marie, Clare, Colleen, Geraldine, Brendan, Gail, Deirdre, Joey and Det-
tie. Devoted grandfather to his 22 grandchildren and cherished great grandchildren Ogie and Blaithín. Brendan’s wake and funeral was among the largest ever seen in Camp, serving as a profound testament to the high esteem in which he was held in the community. More than fifty years ago, Brendan met and married the lovely Camp lady Peggy O’Driscoll, Peggy was the love of his life. And together they settled in Glendine, Camp, raised nine children and shared a long and happy life. Brendan was a gifted and talented tradesman, carpenter, and builder. The ceiling of St Mary’s Church, crafted carefully and skillfully is a lasting legacy of his craftsmanship and an example of the energy and dedication he put into his work. Brendan had a great generosity of spirit too, he often took on young local tradesmen, helping them climb the ladder to success in the building industry. Brendan was above all a devoted family man and he will be truly missed by his loving family and his wide circle of friends Sympathy is extended to Peggy and all the family. He was laid to rest in Camp Graveyard on Wednesday last following Requiem Mass celebrated by Fr. Eamonn Mulvihill PP, Castlegregory. Rest In Peace Brendan.
Mount Brandon Mountain Access Project Forum North East West Kerry Development has appointed Outscape to investigate the feasibility of establishing a Mountain Access Project for the Mount Brandon area. What is a Mountain Access Project? A Mountain Access Project is an approach to facilitating and managing existing public recreational access to defined upland areas which, in the main, are made up of privately owned land and to which landowners grant permissive access for recreational use. The model has been developed through Comhairle na Tuaithe and is supported by the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht. Stakeholder group forum A Mountain Access Project is hosted and driven by a local stakeholder group that is representative of the area and includes private and public landowners, community organisations, recreational users and recreational service providers. Trying to Get the Words Out
The family of Mike Devane would like to thank you all for your love and support throughout his long illness and since his death. We miss him every day, especially for his mischievous smile, and determined spirit. He was a good friend, a beloved brother and son, and a loving husband. We wish to thank all of you who thought of us in our grief, came to be with us at removal and funeral, or simply visited and kept us company then and now in our grief. We especially thank our local medical team, who treated him with great dignity and care from the start, especially Dr. Peadar Fanning, without whose help Mike would never have gone for treatment. The Primary Care team, the staff, nurses and doctors at Clinic Cois Abhainn, the Palliative Care team all helped us through his time at home towards the end of his illness. During these years, the doctors and nurses at CUH, Tralee Hospital and Cork South Infirmary Hospital gave Mike the best of care, berated him for smoking and explained everything carefully to him at all times. Lastly, we want to thank himself for his indomitable spirit that kept him going throughout and kept him with us to that very last night when his suffering ended. Rath Dé ar a Anam Dílis. The season has slowly turned from Autumn to Winter. There is a pull towards the warmth and safety of home. Everything in nature echoes this stark, inward looking, reflective energy . The land is resting, the trees are bare, many animals are in hibernation and there's a kind of quiet stillness in the air . There is no organic call for productivity - this is a time of year for deep discovery, for tapping into the bare energy of the darkness, the dormant earth, latent creativity - hidden, not yet stirring. This is a natural cycle, to mindfully let go of distractions- to keep our plans and ambitions, our desire and innovation to a minimum. This is a time to replenish: to restore the fragile balance of input/output energy. Reclaiming a steady equanimity allows us to absorb the natural rhythms of life and feel its joy. The mind, body and spirit reclaims that innate trust in the unknowable, magical quality of life. So many of us ignore this natural cycle and keep pushing ahead, striving-our eye always on the elusive prize, always just out of reach no matter how much we achieve. Or we feel defeated, relinquish something of our essence, succumbing to a fear that we are not good enough. The relentless mental activity, the demands we make on ourselves is draining. Like driving a car at full throttle will eventually damage the engine - leading to more wear and tear, shorter component life and low fuel efficiency - our bodies also crack under the pressure of sustained stress. The mind/body needs downtime; time to recharge the batteries and ultimately improve performance, longevity, mental and physical health. Winter is nature's time for pressing the restart button. You deepen your awareness of all that is, linger in the depths of inherent knowledge and wisdom, process and percolate introspectively all that you have learnt and gathered throughout the year. You assess where you have been, where you are now and where you want to be in the future. Re-evaluating our lives in a slow organic way frees up the spirit, creating space to let go of everything that no longer serves and opening up to new perspectives, new hopes and dreams, new creative paths. None of this means you have to take a sabbatical or retreat to an isolated monastery in the moun-

tains of Tibet! Effectively, you don’t have to do anything. It just means you can take your foot off the pedal, slow down and find a natural alignment with the season. Take the burden of responsibility down a notch and lean into your playful side, don’t worry so much about consequences, just for now take the easy way out once in a while, allow for imperfections, try coasting for a while and avoid new projects, don’t take offence easily, do forgive easily, get outside as much as you can - take long aimless walks and soak up the goodness of the natural world, meet your friends for no good reason, chat to the kids just because.. , lose yourself in a good book, eat warm nourishing food, focus lightly on whatever is happening now in the moment, meditate, don’t worry so much about tomorrow, rely more on others. Be open to possibilities and maybe surprise yourself on how much slack you can cut yourself. Try not to be results focused, simply let things unfold. As a wise woman once said you don’t have to do things; you get to do things. So consider the possibility of just slowing down and looking around, nurturing ourselves and maybe seeing things in a new light, from a different angle. We can’t just stop everything and take a break from our lives, but by acceptance
of the present rather than resistance, we can live our lives more fully, more in flow- aware of the full spectrum of human experience- both positive and negative, that an individual undergoes throughout their life. Nothing is permanent : all things change. The demands of every day still need to be met. The bills still have to be paid and deadlines kept. Winter conditions are harsh and unforgiving when we are at our weakest, poorest, loneliest. Wherever we are now, stages of life evolve - we are all, always, dependent on each other. Asking for help when you need it- you are bestowing a gift on those who give. Kindness and goodwill can be given willingly and received graciously. By looking inwards, resting for a while, embracing life’s journey, we discover a deep truth which Walt Whitman puts best: I am larger, better than I thought; I did not know I held so much goodness There is support available for anyone who needs help this winter. Message from Fr Michael At the moment there is a consultation process underway by the Department of Education and Children on Patronage of Primary Schools. Bishop Ray Browne has a message to parents and guardians and it goes as follows. Until the 16th of December an online Primary School survey is taking place. All parents/guardians both of children in Primary schools, and of children who have not yet started Primary school, have a vote. Talk among yourselves as parents, encourage one another to vote. The survey is on three issues/choices: co-educational or single-sex schools; schools under religious or non-religious patronage; education through the Irish or English language. All issues are important; I am particularly concerned with the ‘religious’ issue. As Patron of the Primary schools of the diocese of Kerry, I urge every home to vote. As Patron, I genuinely want you to vote for your own personal preference. Your vote and every vote is vital. Vote if you want change, equally vote if you are satisfied with/in favour of the current situation. I personally value this unique opportunity to genuinely know the wishes of the parents of all children under twelve in all primary schools. A few years ago I got an unusual item in the post. It was a ‘save the date’ for a wedding that was happening about 6 months later. It was in the form of a fridge magnet. The idea being that I would put it on the fridge door and be reminded many times each day of the upcoming nuptials. We have began the season of Advent. There is no need of a fridge magnet to remind us of the date of Christmas. We will be reminded many times of the need to get this or that to make Christmas extra special. Advent is a time of preparation for the coming of the Lord. In this season, we recall two central elements of our faith: the final coming of the Lord in glory and the incarnation of the Lord in the birth of Jesus. Key themes of the Advent season are watchful waiting, preparation, and justice. In the Gospel last Sunday (Mt24:37-44), we hear Jesus speak about the need for wakefulness, for watchful waiting, for the coming of the Son of Man. The passage from Matthew we read today is rather straightforward. No one knows the precise time of the coming of the Lord in glory, so watchful waiting and vigilance are required. The question for us as members of the Christian community, then, is how do we prepare for this? Today's passage speaks more about the manner of waiting, rather than the details of the preparation. Jesus compares the vigilance required of Christians to the vigilance of a homeowner who knows the plans of the thief. If one knows that the thief's action is imminent, one remains watchful. As Christians, we know that our Lord is coming even if we cannot know the precise timing. Jesus calls us to be watchful and vigilant, like the homeowner. If we become lax in our Christian living, we may be caught unprepared. All Gods blessings at this time. - Fr Michael

Working remotely in Corca Dhuibhne? Join the crew! with over 130 members and continuing to grow. Other parts of Kerry have chapters too - remote workers can attend any chapter’s events. Circa 18 members of Dingle/Corca Dhuibhne chapter met up recently and had a great social evening. Several of those were newcomers (returnees or new to the area) who took a chance on joining-in with something they hadn't done before. Because we aim to keep it informal and friendly, they were rewarded with getting to know regular attendees and a relaxed jovial occasion resulted. Introductions made at events like these are a great springboard for further connection, which in turn is undoubtedly helping build a stronger, better connected West Kerry community. We also love that Grow Remote events are supporting our local businesses and organisations. Grow Remote is a social enterprise whose mission is to make good quality jobs available to everyone, wherever they live. Remote and hybrid working is having a significant and positive impact on our communities, especially in Corca Dhuibhne, where for so long work opportunities were limited. The organisation helps workers find and thrive in remote jobs while also advocating on behalf of this sector. Barra Ó˙Briain The years from 1920 to 1929 are chronicled within this book and it provides a wonderful insight into the very significant challenges faced by the people of Dingle and its surrounding district throughout the 1920s. The decade was a period of transition from the turbulence of English occupation to a civil war and the emergence of self-government. The contribution of individuals, in their determinaton to ease the plight of many, whether in the town of Dingle or in the surrounding district, was quite extraordinary, and they certainly reaped very notable improvements within the town, in their caring for the sick and poor, assisting fishing and farming and the re-distribution of the land following the departure of the local landed gentry. The decade was notable too for the efforts made at local and national level in promoting and preserving the Irish language and enhancing its status, within the disrtict, against the remnants of anglicised schooling and the detrimental impact of emigration.
