Kerry International Film Festival Presents:

In Conversation with Fiona Shaw

Kerry International Film Festival (KIFF) is delighted to announce a very special event, "In Conversation with Fiona Shaw", taking place at Randles Hotel, Killarney on Thursday 23 October at 7pm. The evening will include a drinks reception, an intimate conversation with the acclaimed Fiona Shaw, and the official presentation of the 2025 Maureen O’Hara Award.

The Maureen O’Hara Award was established by KIFF in 2008 to celebrate women who have excelled in the film and television industries. Previous recipients include Brenda Fricker, Jessie Buckley, Fionnula Flanagan, and most recently producer Rebecca O’Flanagan in 2024. This year’s recipient, Fiona Shaw, is widely recognised as one of Ireland’s greatest actors, with an extraordinary career spanning stage, screen, and television. Fiona Shaw has captivated audiences worldwide with roles in My Left Foot, The Butcher Boy, the Harry Potter series, The Tree of Life, Ammonite and her most recent releases Hot Milk and Park Avenue (2025). On television, her award-winning work includes Bad Sisters, Killing Eve, Fleabag, and Andor. She is a two-time Laurence Olivier Award winner, a BAFTA recipient, and has earned multiple Tony and Primetime Emmy nominations.

This intimate evening at Randles Hotel offers audiences a rare opportunity to hear first-hand about her illustrious career and reflections on receiving the award.

As part of this year’s festival celebrations, KIFF is honoured to close its programme with Park Avenue on Sunday 19 October at Cinema Killarney, in which Shaw delivers a compelling performance as Kit, a dazzling yet difficult mother whose secrets threaten to unravel her relationship with her daughter Charlotte (Katherine Waterson).

Kerry International Film Festival chair, Ailbhe Keogan, said:

“As Chair of KIFF, I am totally honoured to welcome Fiona to Killarney. I have also had the honour of writing for her. As a writer, when you hear that Fiona is playing one of your characters, your heart leaps. It's a rush of pleasure and reassurance because you know she'll bring your character to life. She'll do it with great integrity and insight. She gifts you back a version of the character beyond your own imagining. She is a generational talent and a national treasure; we're fortunate to have her.”

Stress and Food: How Our Survival System Went Rogue

Once upon a time, stress kept us alive. It was the alarm bell that got our ancestors running from sabre-toothed tigers or sharpening spears instead of dozing off in the tall grass. The rush of adrenaline, the pounding heart, the wide-eyed focus — all part of a finely tuned survival mechanism designed to keep us breathing another day. Fast-forward a few millennia and that same alarm now goes off when the Wi-Fi drops, your boss emails at 10 p.m., or you realise you’ve left your reusable bags in the hallway again. The biology hasn’t changed — but the threats certainly have. Our nervous system can’t tell the difference between a charging predator and a chaotic to-do list. Either way, it reacts as if our life depends on it. And in a way, it does — just not in the way it was meant to.

When the stress response is triggered, the body shifts into full emergency gear. Blood pressure rises, the heart races, and digestion slows to a crawl. Once the danger passes, things should return to normal. But in modern life, the danger never really passes. We lurch from one minor crisis to the next — deadlines, bills, bad news — until the body forgets how to stand down. The result? A system stuck in “on.” Sleep suffers, appetite changes, hormones run amok. We feel wired and tired all at once — not quite in danger, but never quite safe. And that’s when food habits start to crumble.

In stress mode, our appetite does strange things. Some people can’t eat at all; others could devour the contents of the press and still feel unsatisfied. The quick fixes — biscuits, crisps, chocolate, white bread — temporarily soothe because they deliver what the body thinks it needs: fast energy for a quick escape and comfort for the aftermath. But the relief is fleeting.

Ultra-processed foods, the ones engineered to hit all our pleasure buttons and play tricks on our biochemistry. They spike blood sugar, feed inflammation and keep cortisol — our main stress hormone — on high alert. Research in Nutrients (2019) linked diets high in ultra-processed foods with increased rates of anxiety and depression. It’s a self-reinforcing loop: the more stressed we feel, the more we crave these foods, and the worse we feel afterwards.

Evolutionarily speaking, the system makes sense. When food was scarce, stress kept us alert long enough to find something edible. But in a world of endless convenience foods and 24-hour supermarkets, that same instinct can easily lead to our downfall.

The Gut–Brain Connection

Scientists now know that the gut and brain are in constant conversation — a two-way radio line known as the gut–brain axis. Around 90 percent of serotonin, our so-called “feel-good” hormone, is made in the gut. The trillions of microbes that live there help regulate mood, inflammation, and even how we respond to stress. When we feed those microbes well — with fibre, colourful plants and fermented foods — they send signals that promote calm and balance. But feed them a steady diet of processed, lowfibre foods and the opposite happens. The gut microbiome becomes less diverse, inflammation rises and resilience drops. This isn’t just theory. The landmark SMILES trial in 2017 showed that people with clinical depression

who switched to a Mediterranean-style diet — rich in vegetables, legumes, fish, olive oil and whole grains — saw significant improvements in mood after 12 weeks. Some even went into remission without medication. Food, it turns out, doesn’t just fuel the body. It’s biochemical communication. It's no surprise that some of the key nutrients that can turn down the alarm, are also soothing to the nervous system;

• Magnesium – Found in leafy greens, oats, pumpkin seeds, avocado, and dark chocolate. It helps regulate cortisol and muscle relaxation. Chronic stress depletes it, and possibly why cravings for chocolate often spike under pressure.

• B vitamins – Especially B6 and B12, which support neurotransmitter production and stable energy. You’ll find them in wholegrains, eggs, beans, fish and good quality meat if you eat it.

• Omega-3 fats – From sardines, mackerel, salmon, or algae oil. They reduce inflammation and protect brain function.

• Fermented foods – Such as kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, or live yoghurt. They keep the gut ecosystem thriving, which in turn keeps mood steady.

• Adaptogenic herbs – Like ashwagandha, rhodiola or holy basil, which help regulate the stress response over time. (Think of them as gentle “reset buttons” rather than quick fixes.)

Even simple rituals — a cup of lemon balm or chamomile tea, a mindful meal without screens — send a signal through the vagus nerve that says: you’re safe now.

The goal isn’t to eliminate stress — that would make life very dull — but to help the body switch between states more easily. Stress was designed to keep us alive; rest and digestion were designed to keep us living well. The balance between the two determines whether we burn out or bounce back. Food is one of the simplest levers we have to shift that balance. Not because it numbs or distracts, but because it provides the raw materials our nervous system needs to function properly — minerals, amino acids, fats and fibre. Real food helps us respond rather than react.

In every generation, people have turned to food as both comfort and protest. During the Blitz, families shared loaves baked in bomb shelters. In Irish kitchens, the cure for heartbreak, loss or bad weather was always the same: make the tea. Across cultures, cooking has always been our way of saying, we’re still here. In times of uncertainty, stirring a pot of soup or baking bread can feel oddly revolutionary — a way of restoring order, however small, to a world that feels unsteady.

So while food can’t fix the economy or stop the headlines, it can steady the hands that hold the spoon. And sometimes, that’s enough. Choosing real food over processed, taking a breath before eating or sharing a meal with someone — these are small acts of defiance against a world that thrives on keeping us frazzled. We can’t control the chaos, but we can control what is on the plate. So feed yourself well, feed others when you can - because in a world addicted to stress, sitting down to eat is a radical act.

Once Upon a Time in the Southwest

Drowned in Dingle Bay

-Kerry Evening Post 28 February 1894

The people of Dingle and surrounding area were deeply shocked yesterday evening on hearing that a young man named John Moran had been swept overboard from his smack, the Rambler, and drowned in Dingle Bay. He was a very popular young man, not only among the fishing community but also among other circles of young men of the town. The fine weather yesterday morning encouraged a large number of boats to head for the fishing grounds in the bay. However, around midday a strong westerly wind rose up, followed by a heavy downpour of rain and then mist and fog.

The indications of an impending storm galvanised the vessels to prepare a hasty retreat. The waves were now so high that they threatened immediate danger or even to engulf the entire group of boats. A wave that struck Moran’s vessel swept away part of the mainsail fittings.

Young Moran, who was on the wrong side of the boom, was hurled overboard and into the foaming deep. His brother was one of the crew and he, along with a man named Michael Walsh, got into a small boat and made every effort to save the young man but all was in vain.

The waves were running high, and the small boat became unmanageable in those conditions. Poor Moran, being a strong swimmer but much encumbered by oil skins and big boots, made a desperate struggle for life. However, he was overwhelmed by the power of the sea and succumbed to the deep.

The young man was about twenty-one years of age and unmarried. As a demonstration of the respect held for him by the townspeople, all the shops in the town have their shutters closed today and the greatest sympathy is felt for his family.

(No report of the body being recovered.)

Fatal Fall in Annascaul

-Weekly Freeman’s Journal 25 September 1897

A labourer named Hannigan was busily thatching a rick of hay in Annascaul, when his ladder suddenly slipped and he was thrown violently to the ground. He was removed in an unconscious state to his house, where he received medical and spiritual aid. The unfortunate man never recovered from his injuries and went to his eternal rest the following morning.

Double Runaway in Tralee

-Kerry News 05 February 1897

A pony attached to a trap, on which a Mrs. Brooks of the Kerries was seated, bolted away in Caherina. One of the wheels then came off as the animal dashed along Strand Street. A Mrs. O’Sullivan, on seeing the runaway, rushed out of her home and grasped the reins. However, she was unable to get the animal under control and was thrown to the ground. Mrs. Brooks jumped from the trap but fell awkwardly and sustained some injuries. The pony was finally captured and brought under control by Thomas Moloney.

On the same day a horse attached to a common cart, the property of a farmer named Maurice Healy, broke loose from his restraints. He ran away from Mr. Latchford’s premises in Bridge Street and dashed up Russel Street at a furious pace.

Constable Noonan, who was on duty on Russel Street, rushed before the animal, and at considerable risk succeeded in getting it under control. He was assisted by a man named John Stack of Brogue Lane.

Arrests in Dingle

-Dublin Daily Express 28 February 1917

James Moriarty and John Rayel were arrested in Dingle last evening and handed over to the military authorities. They are charged with interfer-

ing with the police while a brother of Moriarty’s was being arrested under the Defence of the Realm Act.

Bianconi – O’Connell Wedding

-Southern Reporter 28 November 1859

Several of the gentry in Kerry are preparing to enter the state of matrimony. Among them will be Daniel O’Connell of Derrynane Abbey (eldest son of the late Maurice O’Connell) who is soon to be united with Miss Bianconi, daughter of Charles Bianconi, Longwood, County Tipperary. (She probably had a spectacular coach on the occasion.)

Shocking Murder in Kerry

-Sheffield Daily Telegraph 29 July 1869

The outrage near Tralee reported last Tuesday is much more serious than was previously believed. Patrick foley, who was found on the road dreadfully maimed, died a few minutes after his admission to the County Infirmary.

When found he was in a pool of blood and presented a terrible spectacle. His skull was smashed in several places, particularly the back and forehead. His face was perfectly black, not a feature recognisable. His eyes protruded from their sockets. He was literally beaten to death. The only expression that passed his lips when found was “Let me alone”. He was a farm servant of excellent character and was last seen alive in Tralee on Sunday. The Infirmary doctor described his injuries at the inquest. He found no sign of alcohol.

Other witnesses described the finding of the dying man and seeing the deceased alive on Sunday. The inquest was adjourned to enable the police to find the murderer or murderers and are now busily searching the locality.

Assault and Robbery on Old Woman

-Kerry Evening Post 05 June 1897

An outrage of a most cowardly and inhumane nature was perpetrated by thieves at Beale, in North Kerry, a few nights ago on an old woman named Mrs. Keane. It appears that the woman, who lives alone in a little cottage, was preparing for bed when a loud knocking came to her door. Getting no response to their knock, the ruffians tried to force the door. However, the door was a new one and resisted their efforts by being locked and bolted. They then smashed a window with a pitchfork and entered the cabin.

They began to beat the woman with the sash of the broken window. They knocked her down, kicked her and eventually left with whatever money they could find in the cottage. She was discovered the following morning by some people on their way to Mass, bloodied and still lying on the cottage floor. A doctor and a priest were sent for, but it is said that no hope is entertained for her recovery.

Beaufort Film Night

Beaufort Film Night is delighted to announce that it will return on Friday 17th October at Cullina National School, Beaufort.

Beaufort Film Night will be showing the French drama-comedy The Marching Band.

Thibaut is a successful conductor, recently diagnosed with leukaemia. The search for a bone marrow donor leads to the revelation that he was adopted as a child and that he has brother, cafeteria worker Jimmy. They meet and discover a shared passion for music, and soon form a strong bond via an unexpected collaboration with Jimmy’s workplace band...

The Marching Band (French title: “En Fanfare”) will screen at Cullina National School (Eircode V93 RC81) on Friday 17th October at 8.30pm. The full admission price is €7. There is no card payment facility. The admission fee will go towards covering the motion picture licence fee. The film has a 12A rating, and is in French with English subtitles. Beaufort Film Night is a non-profit community organisation founded by local film enthusiasts whose aim is to screen cultural English language and international language films, fostering an interest in and appreciation of these category of films, films that normally don’t get a general release screening in Kerry. Films screened at Beaufort Film Night are carefully curated in order to appeal to a general audience. Beaufort Film Night is supported by Kerry County Council Arts Office and is working in conjunction with Access Cinema, the Arts Council

funded organisation which assists film clubs and film nights in Ireland with their screenings.

Beaufort Film Night would like to thank Cullina National School for providing the venue for this cultural and entertainment opportunity. Further information can be viewed on Beaufort Film Night’s Facebook page (@BeaufortFilmNight).

Chunky Warming Soup

Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School

This soup is so ideal for this time of year and is one of my favourite soups to make. It is full of seasonal vegetables; it is hearty and perfect for these evenings as they start to get darker and colder. When we normally make soup we generally blitz it down in a blender to a fine pureed soup, but it is worth leaving some of your soups chunky especially at this time of year when you want to turn the soup almost into a full meal.

If you enjoy eating meat you can add leftover cooked meats to this dish to help bulk it up, simply add leftover meats such as; slow cooked beef, lamb or chicken. You can leave them in nice sized chunks and add them at the same time as you add the stock Serves 4

Ingredients

• Dice the following vegetables into cubes around 2cm

• 1 large onion diced

• 1 turnip cut diced

• ½ celeriac diced

• 3 large carrots diced

• 2 butternut squash diced

• 2 medium cloves garlic, minced

• 400g cooked chickpeas (if using dried chickpeas make sure to cook them over night and then drain and cook them in fresh water until they have a small bite in them)

• Large bunch of kale (washed and cut roughly into strips)

• Tin of tomatoes

• Bunch of Thyme

• 1 litre of good stock (chicken or vegetables)

• Salt and Pepper

• Rapeseed Oil

Method

In a large pot on medium heat add some oil then add the onions, thyme and a pinch of salt, allow this to cook for about 3 minutes, add the garlic and allow to cook for about 2 minutes. Add the carrots and allow them to cook for about 3 minutes. By adding the vegetables in stages like this will add more depth to the soup. Keep adding the diced vegetables in this way and cooking on a medium heat.

Add the stock and the tomatoes and allow this to cook for about twenty minutes or so (check the vegetables to make sure they are cooked but still with a small crunch to them). You can now add the cooked chickpeas and the kale. Allow this to continue to cook for about 3 or 4 minutes. Season well with salt and pepper and serve into large bowls. Enjoy!!

The quarter final draw for the Garvey's Super Valu senior county football championship has deemed that West Kerry play Daingean Uí Chúis in Austin Stack Park next Sunday 12th October. This local derby is an intriguing proposition and has generated a lot of interest locally and in the county at large.

Last Sunday Dingle had a comprehensive victory over a strong Na Gaeil side in round three and will be in a confident mood now that they have overcome most of their injury problems. They have consistently proved themselves to be one of the finest teams in the county over the past number of years.

By contrast West Kerry prior to defeating South Kerry in their first round game hadn’t won a game in the county championship for six years. Under a new and experienced management setup and backboned by a strong intermediate winning Gaeltacht side, West Kerry showed serious belief and intent in coming from behind to defeat a good South Kerry team on 20th Sept. As winners they qualified for round three where they received a bye to quarter finals.

These two teams know each other inside out having played together and against each other from underage to senior level. On form Dingle must surely start as strong favourites. But this is a plucky young West Kerry side with a lot of good footballers with nothing to lose, unburdened by expectation and everything to play for. How they would relish putting one over on their more illustrious neighbours. It all adds up to a much anticipated exciting encounter indeed. The place to be is Austin Stack Park next Sunday afternoon at 3.30pm.

Mícheál Ó hUanacháin

B’é tuairim na coitiantachta ó thús gur bheag seans a bheadh ag na Ciarraígh i Leath-Chraobh an Choirn in aghaidh Ruagairí na Seamróige, os iad atá i gceann na Príomh-Sraithe agus an comortas sin ar tí a bhuachaint acu.

Os a choinne sin, tá daoine fós ag déanamh iontais den éacht a bhí déanta acu sa chluiche roimhe, in aghaidh Shligigh: trí chúl le fána, ach d’éirigh leo an comh-scór a bhaint amach agus an cluiche a bhuachaint san Am Breise. Éacht é sin a mhairfidh i gcuimhne an lucht leanúna ar feadh na mblianta. Agus lena gceart a thabhairt dóibh, ní raibh aon chuma ar na himreoirí an Domhnach seo caite go raibh néaróga nó sceitimíní na hócáide ag cur isteach orthu.

Is dócha nár chuir an chéad chúl in aghaidh na gCiarraíoch mórán iontais ar an lucht féachana. Graham Burke a scóráil tar éis ocht nóiméad déag, agus an fear céanna arís ceithre nóiméad ina dhiaidh sin. B’é iontas an chéad leath san nár díbríodh an scórálaí den pháirc roimh an briseadh, tar éis dó ionsaí náireach a dhéanamh ar Joe Adams. Glacann lucht peile i gcoitinne ar fud na tíre leis gur chóir carta dearg bheith bronnta ar Burke as an droch-iompar, ach chinn an réiteoir, Paul McLaughlin, gur leor carta buí – agus bhronn sé a chomhleithéid ar Adams féin, ar Ronan Teahan agus ar Robbie Cleary – gan trácht ar Colin Healy, a bhí le ceangal ar an taobh-líne.

I gcaitheamh an ama, an 1200 nó mar sin de lucht tacaíocht na Ríochta a thug aghaidh ar an Ard-Chatair don chluiche, bhí siad glórach ag gríosadh an foirne lena ngártha is a gcuid amhrán, agus fiú is an imirt ag dul ina gcoinne lean siad leis an spreagadh go deireadh.

Scóráil na Ruagairí faoi dhó, roimh agus i ndiaidh an bhriseadh, agus ansin leagadh Daniel Okwute gar do chúl na foirne baile. B’é Adams a thóg cúram na cice éirice air féin, agus chomhlíon go snasta é.

An méid sin ráite, ba léir nach mór ón tús go raibh imirt lucht na Seamróige ar leibhéal níos airde ná mar a bhí ag muintir Thrá Lí, agus níorbh iontas ar bith é dhá chúl eile acu roimh deireadh, cé go gceapfá ón scór sin go raibh taispeántas fíor-lag curtha ar fáil ag na cuairteoirí.

Níor mar sin é in aon chor, ach iad ag imirt ar a ndícheall, ó thús deireadh, gan aon díomá leis feiscint orthu, ach an cur chuige díograsach dóchasach céanna a chítear uathu go rialta i bPáirc Chnocán an Iolair, agus ní raibh sé sábháilte ag na Ruagairí na maidí a ligean le sruth go raibh an fhead deireanach séidte.

Maithfear dúinn, déarfainn, má fhágaimid cúrsaí Sraithe go dtí an chéad eagrán eile. Oíche mhór i stair chlub ar bith é babhta leath-cheannais chomortas mar Corn an FAI a bhaint amach. Bíodh tamaillín eile ag Kerry FC chun mórtas a dhéanamh as ar éirigh leo a chur i gcrích.

Le tamall anuas tá daoine ag rá go bhfuil borradh fén nGaolainn agus na healaíona ó cheann ceann na tíre, agus ar an meas atá ag an óige orthu araon. Déarfainn go bhfuil formhór agaibh ar an meon céanna liomsa, go raibh an Ghaolainn agus na healaíona éagsúla i gcónaí mar chuid den ngnáthshaol anseo i gCorca Dhuibhne, agus iad lárnach i saol na leithinise go deimhin. Nach iontach ar a shon san más ea, má tá an tuiscint san ag scaipeadh, agus árdáin nua éagsúla á fháil ag ár dteanga agus ag ár gcultúr in áiteanna eile.

Tá sé go haoibhinn gur rud nádúrtha é sa dúthaigh seo ceiliúradh a dhéanamh ar imeachtaí beaga is móra, agus go mbíonn Banna Fíf agus Druma Dhaingean Uí Chúis ar fáil chun cur le pé ceiliúradh a bhíonn i gceist, mar shampla foireann buacach Chiarraí ag filleadh ar Chorca Dhuibhne, beannú na mbád sa Daingean, nó tráth dá raibh théadh banna an bhaile amach chun tús oifigiúil a chur le Regatta an Daingin, nó le Taispeántas Talamhaíochta Chiarraí Thiar. Neartaíonn sé sinn mar phobal, agus taispeánann na hócáidí ceiliúrtha seo go bhfuil meas againn ar ár gcuid fhéin, más ceoltóirí, imreoirí spóirt nó na slite beatha difriúla a chothaíonn sinn ar an leithinis seo atá i gceist sa bhféile nó sa mhórshiúl áirithe.

Tá traidisiún láidir ó thaobh na bhféilte do i gCorca Dhuibhne, níor mhaith liom iarracht a dhéanamh ar iad ar fad a ainmniú anois ar eagla go bhfágfainn ceann ar lár! An rud a léiríonn sé seo ná go raibh daoine ceannródaíocha i gcónaí anseo, a mheas go mb’fhiú an dua go léir a bhaineann le féile a chur le chéile, mar an toradh a bheadh ar an obair san ná go mbeadh an pobal tugtha le chéile, agus níl aon ní níos tábhachtaí ná san, go háirithe dúinne agus sinn lonnaithe anseo ar chósta thiar na tíre. Is breá liomsa an tráth seo bliana, bíonn formhór na dturasóirí imithe, bíonn laghdú éigint ar fhotharaga an tSamhraidh, agus breis saoirse b’fhéidir sásamh a bhaint as ár ndúthaigh fhéinigh, labhairt le chéile, agus tacú leis na gnóanna áitiúla. Ach is dócha go bhfuil an iomarca taithí againn ar a bheith luite amach orainn fhéinigh, agus ionas ná braithfimís daoimhaoin, tá éagsúlacht leathan d’fhéiltí beartaithe don ndúthaigh seo as seo go deireadh na bliana.

Ceann dos na féilte sinn atá romhainn amach ná Féile Liteartha Chorca Dhuibhne ón 21u-23u Samhain, a chlúdaíonn gach gnéith den litríocht, agus a thugann léitheoirí agus scríbhneoirí go Corca Dhuibhne, cuid acu ó thar toinn. Táim fhéin sáite sa bhféile le dhá bhliain anuas, ní saineolaí mé ar aon ábhar liteartha, ach is breá liom a bheith ag léamh agus ag plé le daoine, ar nós ana chuid agaibh fhéinigh! Tá meas agam ar an gcoiste, táid ag cinntiú go mbeidh ócáidí Gaeilge ar ard chaighdeán mar chuid den bhféile, go háirithe agus an fhéile lonnaithe anseo sa Ghaeltacht. Tá imeachtaí na féile go léir le feiscint ar an suíomh idirlín www.dinglelit.ie agus ligfead daoibh féachaint ar sin ach a mbeidh seans agaibh. B’fhéidir go mbeadh deis eile agam dul tríd na himeachtaí ar fad libh amach anseo arís.

Fé mar a dúrt níos luaithe, bhí na healaíona i gcónaí anseo ar an leithinis, ach tá sé cinnte go bhfuil feabhas tagaithe ar éagsúlacht na ndeiseanna.

Más rud é go mbaineann tú taitneamh as a bheith ag tarrac phictiúirí, cur d’áit in áirithint sa cheardlann maisitheoireachta a bheidh ag Dómhnal Ó Bric Satharn na féile.

Tá ceardlann slamfhilíochta fé stiúir Chormaic Mhic Gearailt chun a bheith mar chuid d’fhéile na bliana seo, ceardlann dátheangach. Tá cáil Kneecap scaipithe ar fuaid an domhain, b’fhéidir le treoir agus comhairle Chormaic go mbeadh ár Móglaí Bap fhéinigh againn i gCorca Dhuibhne. Cé acu agaibh a thugann tráthnóntaí an Gheimhridh ag féachaint ar na sobalchláracha? Fair City, Ros na Rún, Home & Away agus a leithéidí san? Más dóigh libh go mbeadh forbairt níos fearr déanta agaibhse ar scéal éigint sna cláracha san, bhuel cheart daoibh tabhairt fén gceardlann scríbheoireacht-scripte le Richie Conroy. Bhíodh sé fhéin ag scríobh do Fair City, agus ‘sé a scrígh an script do ‘Crá’ a bhí ar TG4 ní fadó ó shoin. Bhínn fhéin ana thógtha le Home & Away agus mé óg, dá mba rud é go raibh a leithéid do cheardlann ann ag an am, bheinn imithe chuige, agus ní fios cad a bheadh tarlaithe do Flathead Fisher agus Alf Stewart! Tá na ceardlanna seo go léir thuasluaite oscailte do dhéagóirí agus do dhaoine fásta, mar sin tapaigh an deis, bí mar chuid den gceiliúradh. Is saibhre sinn nuair a thugaimid na deiseanna seo dúinn fhéin.

Public Consultation Continues at the Phoenix Dingle

Leanann an Próiseas Comhairliúcháin Phoiblí ag Phoenix an Daingin

The weekend before last marked the third in a series of public consultations inviting local voices into the reimagining of the Phoenix Cinema, Dingle, Co. Kerry. The first session, Listening (in June), laid the foundation, while Sketching (in August) introduced early design ideas. Both events were met with strong community engagement, sparking thoughtful discussion, critique, and vision-sharing.

Ar an 27ú Meán Fómhair reachtáladh an triú sheisiún comhairliúcháin poiblí inár sraith, ag tabhairt cuireadh do dhaoine áitiúla labhairt faoi athshamhlú Phictiúrlann an Phoenix sa Daingean, Co. Chiarraí. Leag an chéad sheisiún, Ag Éisteacht (i Meitheamh) síos an bonn, fad is a chuir Ag Sceitseáil (i Lúnasa) smaointe luatha i dtaobh dearadh an tsuímh os comhair an phobail. Bhí rannpháirtíocht láidir ón bpobal soiléir ag an dá sheisiún úd, agus iad ag spreagadh plé mhachnamhaigh, critíce, agus roinnt ar aislingí.

The consultations have been led by Laura Brock (Brock McClure Planning Consultants), Andrew Clancy (Clancy Moore Architects), Mary Hickson (creative director and producer), and Yvonne McGuinness (visual artist and co-custodian of the Phoenix). Together, they bring complementary expertise to ensure that design ideas are both visionary and practical.

Tá an próiseas comhairliúchán á stiúradh ag Laura Brock (Comhairleoirí Pleanála Brock McClure), Andrew Clancy (Ailtirí Clancy Moore), Mary Hickson (Stiúrthóir Cruthaitheach agus Comhairleoir Cláraithe) agus Yvonne Mc Guinness (Amharc-Ealaíontóir agus Comhúinéir an Phoenix). I dteannta a chéile, tugann siad saineolas comhlántach chun an chúraim, rud a chinntíonn go mbíonn na smaointí deartha idir fhíseach agus phraiticiúil araon.

The Phoenix team extends sincere thanks to everyone who joined the three public consultation sessions and contributed ideas so generously. The positivity and support expressed have strengthened the team’s commitment to shaping a new Phoenix that realises the full potential of this remarkable site, at the heart of this unique town. Gabhann foireann an Phoenix buíochas ó chroí le gach éinne a bhí páirteach in aon cheann den trí sheisiún comhairlúcháin agus a roinn a dtuairimí go fial linn. Tá an dearfacht agus tacaíocht a chuireadh in iúl tar éis dúthracht na foirne a threisiú i dtaobh Phoenix nua a chruthú a fíoróidh acmhainní iomadúla an tsuímh i gcroílár an bhaile ar leith seo. At the Sketching session, participants imagined the Phoenix as an “arts village.” This idea has since become central to the project. As Yvonne McGuinness noted, for the Phoenix to survive and thrive, it must grow beyond its role as a cinema to become a dynamic cultural village.

Ag an seisiún Ag Sceitseáil shamhlaigh rannpháirtithe an Phoenix mar “shráidbhaile ealaíon”. Tá áit lárnach bainte amach ag an gcoincheap seo sa tionscadal ó shin. Mar a dúirt Yvonne McGuinness, chun go mairfidh an Phoenix, ní mór dó fás ó bheith ina phictiúrlann amháin le bheith ina sráidbhaile bríomhar cultúrtha.

Laura Brock spoke of how crucial matters such as drainage, logistics and ecology are being sensitively responded to - and of the vast series of technical studies being undertaken to ensure that the project represents best practice in its sensitivity to its neighbours, the environment and the broader ecology of the town and its hinterland.

Labhair Laura Brock faoin tslí go bhfuiltear ag freagairt ar bhealach íogair do cheisteanna ríthábhachtacha ar nós draenála, loigisticí agus eiceolaíochta, agus faoin sraith thoirtiúil de staidéir theicniúla atá idir lámha chun a chinntiú go mbíonn an tionscadal ag teacht le deachleachtas

maidir lena íogaireacht i leith a chomharsan, na timpeallachta, agus éiceolaíocht níos leithne an bhaile agus an cheantair mháguaird.

Architect Andrew Clancy presented developed design proposals, showing how building heights have been carefully calibrated to respect surrounding streetscapes. The scheme introduces new, characterful gables that sit comfortably within Dingle’s vibrant patchwork of roofs, yards, and sheds. This is a design rooted in the language of Dingle - its forms, its rhythms, and its spirit.

Chuir an t-ailtire Andrew Clancy na moltaí reatha deartha i láthair, ag taispeáint mar a bhfuil airde na bhfoirgneamh curtha in oiriúint ar shlí cháiréiseach do na sráid-dreacha mórthimpeall ar an suíomh. Tugann an scéim seo isteach pinniúir nua atá lán carachtair is a luíonn isteach go compordach leis an bpátrún measctha beoga de dhíonta, clóis agus seideanna atá sa Daingean. Is dearadh é seo atá fréamhaithe i dteanga fhisiciúil an Daingin féin - a foirmeacha, rithimí agus spiorad

The designs continue to evolve and will be brought forward in a full planning application this November. Looking ahead, the Phoenix team is planning further public events in 2026 to explore programming ideas and the exciting possibilities this new centre will bring as it moves into detailed design.

Leanann an dearadh ar aghaidh lena éabhlóid agus beidh sé á thabhairt chun cinn i bhfoirm iarratais iomlán pleanála i Mí na Samhna. Ag féachaint amach romhainn, tá foireann an Phoenix ag pleanáil a thuilleadh imeachtaí i 2026 chun féachaint ar smaointe faoi chlárú agus na féidearthachtaí spleodracha a chruthóidh an ionad nua seo agus sinn ag bogadh ar aghaidh go sonraí an dearaidh.

Community input remains vital, and suggestions are welcomed at hello@ dinglephoenix.ie

Tá ionchur ón bpobal fós ríthábhachtach, agus cuirfear fáilte roimh tuairimí agus smaointe ag hello@dinglephoenix.ie

At its core the new Phoenix will be a cultural village, anchored in cinema, but extending far beyond it. Alongside film screenings, the revitalised site will host live performances, rehearsals, music practice, meetings, and small theatre. Plans also include artists’ studios, a project room, gallery, community ‘living room’, and a garden designed for conversation and reflection. The vision is for a place that serves locals and visitors alikeopen year-round, alive with creativity.

Is é a bheidh sa Phoenix nua, go bunúsach, ná sráidbhaile cultúrtha, fréamhaithe i saol na scannán, ach ag síneadh amach i bhfad thairis. Taobh le léiriúcháin ar scannáin, beidh an suíomh athbheoite ag fáiltiú roimh léiriúcháín bheo, cleachtadh – le cleachtadh ceoil san áireamh – , cruinnithe, agus amharclann bheag. Anuas orthu siúd, ina gcuid den bplean tá stiúidiónna ealaíontóra, seomra tionscadail, gailearaí, 'seomra suí', agus gairdín a bheidh ina láthair mar a féadfaidh daoine bailiú agus bualadh le cairde chun a bhfuil feicithe agus cloiste acu a phlé. An fís ná áit a bhíonn ag freastal ar mhuintir na háite agus cuairteoirí araon – oscailte ó cheann ceann na bliana, bríomhar is beoga le teann cruthaitheachta. Tír na nÓg in Tanzania

In July, a dedicated group of educators from a school in Killorglin travelled to Tír na nÓg Primary School in Tanzania to launch a life-changing ICT (Information and Communication Technology) project.

Locals Selina O’Shea from Inch and Orla Bric from Ventry were amongst the group.

The Tír Na nÓg foundation is ran by Kerry Person of the Year 2024 Louise Quill, native of Tralee. She works with the group in school whilst also managing and directing the foundation in Tanzania.

The group fundraised with various different events before the trip took place. There was a Bingo night in Inch which saw over €3,500 raised and a quiz night in Milltown, one of the group ran a marathon, another completed a Triathlon whilst in Tanzania another couple fundraised & climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. With all these events the group raised over €30,000 between them with a number of donations coming from family and friends also.

The group were able to put their fundraising amounts together and the foundation were able to purchase new ICT equipment for the children and whilst the group were in Tanzania this July, the children & teachers were introduced to the new iPads/Laptops.

The entire trip was being self-funded by the teachers, so every cent raised was donated to the foundation towards the purchase of laptops and essential tech equipment to make this project a success.

The foundation is now looking at installing WiFi and providing the school with interactive boards & projectors so fundraising is imperative & ongoing to help aid this happen.

Selina & Orla, on behalf of their group and Tír na nÓg would like to acknowledge their sincere gratitude to all who donated to them and all their fundraising events.

A few people have asked since returning how they can support the amazing work at Tír na nÓg.

By going on the following link you can donate to Tir na nÓg directly or on a monthly basis by sponsoring a child https://tirnanogchildrensfoundation.com/product/sponsor-a-child/.

There is no greater feeling than sponsoring a child, knowing that every single cent donated goes straight to them.

There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

Ceann Sibéal Seniors Charity Golf Event Supporting Kerry Cancer Support Group - Healthlink Transport

For almost 16 years, the Ceann Sibéal Seniors Charity Golf Event has proudly supported Kerry Cancer Support Group - Healthlink Transport, raising nearly €43,000 to date. What started as a local initiative has now become an annual event at the world-renowned Ceann Sibéal Dingle Golf Links.

Since its founding, Kerry Cancer Support Group has grown from one small rented vehicle serving a single hospital twice a week in 2010, to a

fleet of four vehicles transporting patients five days a week to over eight treatment centres across the region and beyond. In that time, they have provided over 70,000 cancer-related and other essential appointments for patients from Kerry, West Cork, and West Limerick.

On average, the service transports 35 patients daily, covering around 3,000 km each week. The impact extends far beyond transport – by removing barriers such as cost, access, and isolation, they ensure that no one faces their journey alone. Leading consultant Dr. Lorraine Walsh has described the service as “the gold standard in patient support”, expressing the wish that it could be replicated nationwide.

In 2024, the charity launched a “Connecting Transport” pilot service, partnering with providers in rural communities to connect people to main routes. The pilot was a success and has continued into 2025, with plans for expansion to meet increasing needs.

Their dedication has also gained national recognition this year: Kerry Cancer Support Group has been shortlisted for the Age Friendly Ireland Transport Award, with the overall winner to be announced in October. This recognition highlights their ongoing efforts to have patient transport recognised as a core service for cancer patients.

“The continued success of the Ceann Sibéal Seniors Charity Golf Event plays a vital role in sustaining and expanding our service. The support of the golfing community ensures that Kerry Cancer Support Group can keep providing vital transport and support for those who rely on it most. We are very proud to continue our association with Ceann Sibéal and this annual event” Breda Dyland KCSG

Guthanna ó Ghaza – Palestinian Poetry Event

Mariam Alkhateeb, a Palestinian poet asks ‘What if War Were a Trick?’ and ‘if the sea was still fit for love, not death.’ Mohammed Moussa asks ‘What can a poem do during a genocide’? Our friend from Gaza, Faress Arafat read in Arabic and pined for the aroma of Manakeesh. So many questions, so a Dylan tune was played, ‘The answer, my friend is blowing in the wind’. Teach Damsa had no words for the genocide and so the body showed the score.

Poets, performers, singers, musicians felt the pain of the Palestinians and brought the voices of Gaza to the alter of An Díseart Chapel, amplifying the silenced as poems slipped past borders, languages and political walls. Parallels were drawn between famine time in Dingle in 1847 and an Ifreann atá i nGaza i 2025. The Girls’ primary school made bunting for the event writing messages on each triangle such as ‘Saoirse do pháistí na Palaistíne.’ Local jeweller Jerry Bácaéir donated a beautiful piece of hand-crafted jewellery for Faress and An Ghaeltacht jersey was bestowed upon him to welcome him to his second home, Éire.

Shukran, mar a déarfá in Araibís, ár mbuíochas do gach duine as an tacaíocht agus an grá do Ghaza a léiriú, leanaimíd orainn. Mar a scrígh file amháin ag an ócáid ‘All Rise for Palestine!’ The audience rose. Let’s keep rising and keep listening to the voices of Gaza. Poems are available on Gaza poets’ society online. Caoimhe Laighléis, a transition year student at Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne recently took 2nd place in the Senior category at the Kerry Young Historian Awards organised by Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society. Her essay is published below.

Hussey’s Folly and its DeepRooted History.

Situated 2.5km south of Dingle in Black Point, Hussey’s Folly, named after the local land agent and author, R.M Hussey, can be walked to on the way to Sláidín, a nearby beach. Hussey’s Folly was originally built in 1845 as part of a “relief program” created by Charles Trevelyan during The Great Famine (1845-1849). The Great Famine was caused by a fungal disease, phytophthora infestans, commonly called potato blight. Another key factor to what made this the Great Famine is the fact that the British continued to export what food was available to the Irish. Relief programmes began October of 1846, with the claimed intention to give work to the poor due to the belief it was better than just giving out food and helping the increasing number of people seeking work, but most of this “work” consisted of building roads to nowhere and towers with only the use of being abandoned.

Alongside the fact the work was cruel, the workers often didn’t see the money they worked for, or in better cases, it was paid incredibly late. In the following years, more than 500,000 poor starving men, women and children were hired to work on these roads and follys, this is visible in Adare, where there are walls built around the town that were built by people working for their next meal, which was never guaranteed. This work entailed smashing large rocks and transporting them to construction sites, which for already weak and ill people was exhausting and harmful to their already poor health. The majority of these workers, malnourished from the lack of food and weakened by illness, sadly perished whilst making these buildings.

The availability of food was nearly non-existent, and the options the Irish were given were nothing short of insulting. In 1846, Sir Robert Peel, Prime Minister of England, shipped out £100,000 worth of Indian corn to vari -

ous parts of Ireland with the claim that it would be sold at an affordable price to give the working people a chance at a full meal. However, not only was the corn sold at an unreasonable price and doubled within the first year, the people who could afford it had no idea how to cook the corn as it was a food only seen before by explorers, so there was little to no knowledge about the corn, let alone how to prepare it. Evidence also suggests that Robert Peel was aware of this, and of the quality of the corn itself, having referred to it as ‘ Poor man’s oats’.

Built out of red sandstone, the folly was given the purpose of alerting sailors to let down their sails and round the mouth of the harbour safely. The building of the Folly also gave poor farmers around the peninsula means of work, something that was taken due to the blight.

Hussey’s Folly sits directly across the harbour from Eask Tower, a tower built at the instigation of Charles Gayer, a prominent Protestant in an attempt to win converts. Although now overgrown with plants and moss, the Folly was built to be 42 feet tall as a freestanding squareplan single-bay single-storey over raised basement folly tower, with four round-headed openings at first floor with decorative red brick arches and reveals, with a similar arched doorway that’s now blocked up. There’s a small window that’s also now blocked up on the ground floor, alongside chimney corner breasts to two corners and plastered walls to interior, and on top, stepped castellations to the parapet wall with fragments of original slate-hanging to the inner face of the parapet.

The Folly is a perfect example of how the whole country was affected by The Great Famine. In the years leading up to The Famine, evidence shows that the Dingle Peninsula was facing poverty, although the more densely populated coastal districts proved to be worse off, even Dingle town showed few signs of prosperity. This was acknowledged by Slater’s Directory (1846), who described the town as being ‘no more than a fishing village’. Pastoral farming was also huge within the peninsula, with the hilly uplands being devoted to it, while the farm sizes were often above average, joint tenancy was very prevalent. Although the initial appearance of potato blight was in the autumn of 1845, it caused little anxiety through Kerry and the Dingle Peninsula, but that all changed by early 1846, when the state of potato crop in various parts of the county including the Dingle Peninsula, was giving rise to real concern. By midFebruary, Corca Dhuibhne was said to have lost two-thirds of its crop.

In May of 1846, Thomas deMoleyns, a member of the Ventry family who were the Dingle Peninsula’s main landlords, informed the government’s relief commission that the crop failure was ‘much more general and severe’ in the parishes west of Dingle but that setting up a separate relief for that region was out of the question. He gave two main reasons for this, the first being that the district contained ‘several wretched villages’ but no town that could act as a focal point, that not a single ‘gentleman of property’ resided within. He also highlighted that cooperation between the Catholic and Protestant clergy was highly unlikely since ‘conversions from amongst the lower orders’ had brought about a state of ‘religious warfare’. The relief committees were funded by Government grants and local donations. By August 1846, Kerry’s committees had raised an average of £460. Contributions to the Dingle committee, however, came to £695-5-6, with Lord Ventry and Earl of Cork each contributing £100.

Although Dingle wasn’t as densely populated, that doesn’t mean that the people and population didn’t suffer. Dingle quickly became a place of poverty and illness, and on one very unfortunate day in January of 1847, 8 people died on John Street alone due to starvation. Eyewitnesses spoke of famine, fever and dysentery wreaking havoc among the poor, it was becoming more and more evident that help wasn’t an option. Many more deaths followed, but that wasn’t the only thing causing distress among the people. A local charity offered ‘a shell to convey the remains of the unfortunate victims to the churchyard’. This meant that the poor victims who passed were buried without a coffin, a tombstone or a proper service, something Rev Charles Gayer also agreed upon in an acclaimed effort to soothe the people. This didn’t help, especially with the prices of basic groceries sky-rocketing, giving grocers the new name of ‘famine mongers’, by a local newspaper, and ‘a heartless set’ by another. At the same time, bakers also came under fire for an alleged ‘deficiency in weight’ in their bread.

The Dingle Peninsula would see many long term effects from the Famine, the biggest being a significant decrease in population. Between 1841 and 1851, the population of the Dingle Union fell by 23.7%, and, for the country as a whole, this pattern continued in the post- Famine decades. Even though in the decade to follow after the Famine emigration became the

biggest cause of a the population dropping, in the early years of the Famine, most farmers and workers couldn’t afford to try emigrate to another country, and even if they had the resources, their health was often too poor to survive the long travel. This can still be seen today, where we once had a population of 8 million, we now have a population of 5.3 million. In conclusion, Hussey’s Folly gives us a small example of the hardships and cruelty the Irish suffered during the Great Famine, a devastating event that didn’t have to take the lives of over 1,000,000 million Irish people. However, due to the actions (or possibly inactions) of the British Government and its leaders, Ireland suffered what can only be described as a genocide. The continuation to export food resulted in the health of millions of people being compromised due to starvation, only to be forced into meaningless labour for a meal with no nutritional value. The Great Famine, although not caused by them, was amplified by the British to an incomprehensible level. Hussey’s Folly gives people a view into our history, and is truly an eye opener into the dark past Ireland has behind it and our long fight for freedom.

Notes

RECENT EVENTS Supporters of Culture Night were treated to a great variety of different events in Dingle this year. The programme offered a choice of acts and performances all of which were very well attended and appreciated judging by the reaction and general comment. Yes Culture Night could well grow into another Weekend Festival in West Kerry.

Another recent event which was very well supported was the Annual Blessing of the Boats in Dingle Harbour. The local Fife and Drum Band led the parade after Mass to the pier where Parish Priest Fr. Michael Moynihan performed the blessing ceremony. Then over 20 tastily decorated boats of different sizes took family members, friends and interested visitors on a short tour to the Harbour's Mouth and celebrations continued through the afternoon in local hostelries. Great to see this tradition now back on a firm footing and so well supported by commercial and leisure vessel owners.

Well over one hundred people of all ages took part in the Quiet Road Walk from Ladies Cross to Ventry to kick start the effort to make some back roads safer for all road users. Certainly a great start and we can expect some more announcements on the Quiet Road Walks both on this and other local roads over the next few weeks.

The recent poor period of weather cleared up just

in time on Saturday last for what was once again a most successful Dingle Food Festival this year. What really stood out for me was the number of new local outlets who opened their premises and were either part of or allowed their premises to be used in the popular Taste Trail. The choice of so many different types of food and beverage provided by local outlets and visiting stalls really makes the Féile Bia one of the top such events in the country.

Our sincere congratulations to the organisers and numerous volunteers who are involved in the successful operation of these and other festivals and events here in West Kerry.

KERRY MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING FESTIVAL . This festival is running from October 4th to 11th this year. A series of open talks and discussion sessions are planned for various venues around the county with full details in media outlets and on local radio and online as well. We can all help with the effort to support people with mental health difficulties by firstly identifying a change in a persons actions, utterances or daily routine and then seeking help from family members or relatives or from the many groups who have specialist training in the mental health area. Yes there is plenty help out there but it takes someone to make the first step in what often saves lives or ongoing distress for those living with mental health in their homes.

ROAD SAFETY. While working with my Tidy Towns colleagues in the Spa Road Area recently we noticed several vehicles breaking the Traffic Lights there in a short period of time. These included cars, vans and vehicles pulling laden trailers of different sizes. Luckily no accidents

occurred but as these particular lights change fairly quickly the holdup time is usually less than a minute which motorists should respect and not create a dangerous scenario for themselves and other road users.

PEIL. The draw for the next round of the County Senior Football Championship certainly threw up an interesting fixture of Dingle versus West Kerry. What can we say only good luck to both teams and let's hope its a real classic of a game of Gaelic football in the traditional fashion.

It's All In The Mind

Generosity

Orla Smyth

The spirit of generosity is one of the most healing qualities of mind/ body awareness. It is core to Mindfulness and one of the 9 attitudes to be cultivated.

It is a skill that can be developed with rich rewards for both the giver and receiver.

Although sharing wealth or material possessions can be uplifting and open us up to a deep sense of connectivity and common humanity, the spirit of generosity pertains to more than that. It includes giving willingly of yourself -your time, your attention, your essence. Often your attention is the most valuable thing you have, finding some time in the day to give your undivided attention to the kids or your partner, being generous with your feelings, deliberately cultivating kindness towards a stranger or a loved one.

Imagine a world without it ,where nobody gives anything of themselves - not a kind word, a helping hand, a donation or even a smile: It would be a cold and heartless world. When we reflect on it, it becomes clear that all acts of generosity make the world a better place. We don't need to be rewarded for each act of giving. We put food out for the birds, not for the birds to show their gratitude but to make a small contribution to life around us. Mindful generosity is gracious rather than transactional. When we really act with the spirit of generosity, we are giving from the heart with no thought of return. Our reward is a life affirming feeling of openness, of belonging and love.

Working

There are times when we are blocked off from any feelings of generosity, driven more by a belief that I barely have enough for myself! Operating from a scarcity mindset is like being stuck on a loop, never able to have our needs fully met -never enough time, never enough wealth, never enough love. No matter how much I have ,it never feels like enough. A scarcity mindset will always highlight the resources we don't have instead of those we do. It is self perpetuating.

When we focus on what we don't have we will never have enough. Cultivating generosity, giving a tiny bit more that we think we can manage, promotes an abundance mindset - the premise being that resources are plentiful and there is enough for everyone to share. This attitude generates joy and growth and optimism rather than greed and individualism and unhappiness

Taking the time to explore our motivation for giving can be very enlightening. Does our generosity derive from a need to : impress: alleviate guilt : make people like us : make people feel dependent on us?.. It is helpful to question and reflect on our motives. Mindless giving, though it may benefit the recipient, does not allow you to reap the benefits of a generous mindset. It is a missed opportunity.

We may spend so much time caring and giving to others that it sucks the life energy out of us- ending up resentful that our efforts are not appreciated or even seen!

Generosity is an inward giving, a heartfelt state. There is no need to make grandiose gestures of giving. It is not necessary to give everything away or even anything! Sometimes we need to give less!.. or acknowledge the need to give, to extend kindness and generosity to ourselves!

A final consideration : giving may potentially place us in an unequal power relationship with those around us so it is just as important to practice receiving graciously. To give is to receive and to receive is to give. With intentional practice , we can cultivate more awareness and attune more to the spirit of generosity, recognizing our universal interconnectedness to others.

remotely in Corca Dhuibhne? Join the crew!

Grow Remote is a social enterprise whose mission is to make good quality jobs available to everyone, wherever they live. Remote and hybrid working is having a significant and positive impact on our communities, especially in Corca Dhuibhne, where for so long work opportunities were limited. The organisation helps workers find and thrive in remote jobs while also advocating on behalf of this sector. Workers who want to find remote jobs can head to www.growremote.ie where there are jobs boards and advice on landing work that they can do from anywhere.

Potential downsides of working remotely include isola-

tion, without colleagues next to you to share the load. To combat this, Grow Remote creates regular opportunities for remote workers to socialise and connect with each other. Towns across Ireland have local chapters with volunteer leaders setting up social events to enable locals meet-up. Aodán Ó Conaill & Judy O'Shea lead the Dingle Chapter - one of Ireland’s largest with over 130 members and continuing to grow. Other parts of Kerry have chapters too - remote workers can attend any chapter’s events.

Circa 18 members of Dingle/Corca Dhuibhne chapter met up recently and had a great social evening. Several of those were newcomers (returnees or new to the area) who took a chance on joining-in with something they hadn't done before. Because we aim to keep it informal and friendly, they were rewarded with getting to know regular attendees and a relaxed jovial occasion resulted.

Introductions made at events like these are a great springboard for further connection, which in turn is undoubtedly helping build a stronger, better connected

West Kerry community. We also love that Grow Remote events are supporting our local businesses and organisations.

If you (or someone you know) is working without the perks of a traditional workplace, or if there’s someone who is curious if remote work is for them, encourage them to come along to our next event. Events require only a quick registration process, with tickets often being without cost.

aistrithe ag

Seán Ó˙Cuirrín

'Go dtaga tú de do dheoin, go n-imí tú slán agus go bhfága tú i do dhiaidh a bheag nó a mhór dár thug tú leat de shonas.'

Sunday 28th: September we had the Jim Fitzgerald sponsored singles stableford. Overall winner - Padraigh Foley. Div 1Damian Duffy. Div 2 - Cóilín Brophy. Div 3 - Brendan McPhilips. Gross - Daragh Roche. Yellow 1st - Alan Dooley. Yellow 2nd - Charlie Barry. Front 9 - Michael Boland Junior, Back 9 - Stephen Ryan. Sunday 5th October: Mark Moriarty's sponsor. 1st - Eddie Brazil. 2nd - Tadgh Ó Muircheartaigh. 3rd - Jim Fitzgerald. Gross - Damian Duffy. Yellow - Denis Power. Front 9 - Sean Guilfoyle. Back 9 - John O'Connor.

Eagrán nua é seo den aistriúchán iomráiteach a rinne Seán Ó Cuirrín ar mhórshaothar uafáis Bram Stoker. Gach braon den bheocht a chuir fear Chluain Tarbh sa bhunscéal, d'aistrigh an Cuirríneach go snasta é sa chlasaic seo a foilsíodh den chéad uair in 1933.

Leagan nuachóirithe é seo atá bunaithe ar an eagrán a réitigh Maolmhaodhóg Ó Ruairc agus a d'fhoilsigh an Gúm in 1997

Tá an aimsir éirithe an-thuathlach, gaoth, báisteach ina tulcaí agus éag gan choinne. Bhí cúpla lá suaimhneach ann a thug caoi dhuinn dul amach fén aer agus portaireachct éigin a chur i gcrích agus na cnámha a bhogadh. Feirmeoireacht

Thugas fé ndeara le déanaí mar a raibh titim mór ar an líon ba, gamhna, caoire, agus uain, ó anuiridh. Droch chómhartha mheasfá.

Bhí ísliú do 36,000 ar an méid ba bainne, agus ba eile 46,000.

I gcás na gcaorach tá titim do 1.5%. Dála an scéil d’éirigh líon na reaithí.

Amhrán

Bhí amhrán ar an dteilifís le déanaí bunaithe sa Daingean. ‘Dancing with the Fishermen’, ainm an amhráin ceolmhar. Taispeáineadh sain nó sár bhólaí an Daingin agus láthair Uachtar reoite Mhurphy mar a raibh fear ag liobádh uachtar reoite lasmuigh den siopa. Bheadh stróinséiri an- thógtha leis an video seo agus gan amhras muintir an Daingin ana shásta.

Cearca fómhair nó muca bealtaine- ní hiad is fearr.

Is céirin do gach créacht an fhoidhne. Bíodh eagla ort agus ní baol duit.

Níl sprid ná púca ná fuil fios a chúise féin aige. Ní théann an bhreáthacht thar an gcraiceann.

Is lia gach othar tréis a leigheas.

An grá ná bíonn láithreach, fuarann sé.

Is fuar é cumann caillí.

Ní raibh ‘an mhaith’ déanach riamh.

Uireasa a mhéadaíonn cumha.

‘n Fhirtéaraigh bás le déanaí. Básaithe roimis bhí a mhac Cormac, deirféaracha Peigí agus Siobhán maraon le deartháir Seán.

Méala mór a bhás dá chéile Phyllis, iníonacha Bríd agus Áine, garchlann, gaolta agus cáirde. I bhFlaitheas Dé a anam.

Fuair Peggy Ferriter Ní Shíthigh Ard na Caithne agus an Daingean bás le déanaí. Bhí a céile Roland básaithe roimpi. Méala mór a bás dá beirt mac Dáithí agus Mícheál, dearthair Muiris, garchlann agus cáirde.

Bean an- dheas b’ea Peigí. Ar feadh na mblianta shiúlaíodh sí an trá gach lá as a mbaineadh sí an- shásamh.

In Iothlainn Dé a hanam. Féile bia an Daingin

Ní raibh aon ocras ortha siúd a fhreastail ar Fhéile Bia an Daingin, ar an Satharn ná ar an nDomhnach. Chaith lucht an ocrais áraistí a bheith acu féin don mbia. Sa chás san ní chaillfidis dada agus d’fhéadfaidís cuid dá mblaistíní a thabhairt abhaile leo. Féasta é seo go mbeithfeá ag blaistíneacht go sásúil gan stró agus tá an- mholadh ag dul do lucht eagraithe agus gach duine go raibh aon bhaint acu leis. Toghchán

Ar Maidin Luain, sea a chualathas ná beadh ach beirt sa toghchán. Caithfead a rá gur dócha go mbeidh cogadh catharda i bhfórsaí Fhianna Fáil. Mar a deirtear, tuilleadh an diabhail chúcha. ‘They set Heather Blazing’ – Ó Thuaidh Beidh an- ghreadadh idir an mbeirt bhan. Is dócha go bhfaighidh bean FG go leor vótaí FF. Cad é spórt.

Retired Garda, James is a highly regarded voluntary Youth and Community support worker at local West Kerry and County level for many years.

Nora was a gifted person, a born artist and crafter in the Cloghane Irish Country Women's Association and a much loved kind and gentle lady.
