Sustainability at the Dingle Food Festival.
The Dingle Food Festival, with the help of the local community sustainability group Transition Corca Dhuibhne, is continuing on its mission to be Zero-Waste to landfill.
People coming to enjoy the festival are encouraged to bring their own bowl, cutlery and cup to help in the effort of reducing the huge waste created by the festival.
Rinse stations will be provided around town, so that people can wash their bowls and reuse them in the taste trail and food stalls, avoiding generating waste from single-use containers, and segregation bins are provided for the rest of the rubbish.
Although the focus is on encouraging people to bring their own bowls, cutlery and cups from home, which is the most ecological solution, there will also be bamboo bowls and cutlery sets for sale, as well as a stainless steel lunchbox rental scheme, which was introduced at last year’s festival.
Transition Corca Dhuibhne, which is completely run by volunteers, started to work with the festival in 2016 to try and tackle the huge amount of waste generated by the festival, first introducing attended segregated bins, followed by the introduction of a reusable bowl and cutlery set festival pack, and the rinsing stations.
’We believe that we are pioneering this model and it shows the power that a dynamic group of people, coupled with a very popular food festival, has to bring about change’, says the group’s member Darach Ó Murchú.
A couple of years ago, the Dingle Food Festival fully embraced this concept and, along with the Zero-Waste initiative, it’s promoting local food, reducing waste, encouraging the use of public transport with extra local link bus services over the weekend, and other measures such as recycled oil to power the electricity for the festival.
‘We are delighted that our hard work over the years has paid off’, says Ó Murchú. ‘There is a mindset change happening amongst the public regarding disposables. People are really engaging with this issue and are having fun being creative by bringing their own bespoke bowls and containers from home. We couldn’t have achieved this transformation alone and we, Transition Corca Dhuibhne, are very grateful to our sixty volunteers, the Food Festival committee and our other supporters.’
The group are looking forward to seeing you at the festival, and please remember to Bring Your Own Bowl and cutlery to the Dingle Food Festival on the 4th and 5th of October.
Volunteers Needed
If you would like to help Transition Corca Dhuibhne and the Dingle Food Festival achieve their aim of Zero-Waste, please sign up to volunteer for a 3-hour shift during the weekend to attend to a rinse station or help the public choose the right bin for their waste (training will be given). Slots run from either 12pm-3pm or 3pm to 6pm on both days, which gives volunteers plenty of time to sample the delights of the festival before or after their shift.
Contact by email: ttcorcadhuibhne@gmail.com
Be part of an inspirational team of volunteers helping to make the Dingle Food Festival Zero-Waste, with this enjoyable community-led initiative.

Brewed Awakening: How Tea
Steeped
into the Irish Mug
Irene Flannery, Nutritional Therapist
There are few sounds as homely as the kettle coming to the boil. In Ireland, tea is never just a drink — it is comfort, consolation and conversation. From the first bleary-eyed cuppa in the morning to the strong brew shared with a neighbour or friend over a good yarn, tea has woven itself into our folklore, our kitchens and our daily habits. But how did this little leaf, grown in lands far from our shores become more synonymous with being Irish than the jigs and the reels.
Be-leaf it or Not
Tea’s story begins in China, where it was first used as medicine thousands of years ago. Black tea, the fully oxidised version of green tea, proved particularly robust for long journeys. By the 17th century, the British East India Company was importing it by the shipload. For years, tea reached Ireland through London merchants, with Trump-like tariffs putting it out of reach of the common mug. That changed in 1835 when Samuel Bewley, a Quaker from Mountmellick, and his son Charles chartered the Hellas, a ship carrying over 2,000 chests of tea directly from Canton in China to Dublin. It was a daring move that made tea more affordable, by cutting out the middlemen, and from there it poured steadily into Irish homes. Bewley’s became a byword for tea, and later, when the cafés came along they soon brewed more than leaves — they brewed ideas. Over pots of strong tea, poets, writers and rebels found their courage… or so the story goes.
It’s worth knowing that black tea and green tea are two faces of the same leaf — Camellia sinensis. What sets them apart is what happens after picking. Green tea is quickly heated to stop oxidation, leaving the leaf bright and grassy, rich in catechins — those famed antioxidants linked to heart and brain health. Black tea, by contrast, is rolled and deliberately left to oxidise. The leaves darken, the flavour deepens, and new compounds are created — theaflavins and thearubigins — which not only give the brew its briskness and body, but also carry health benefits of their own, especially for the heart and gut. While the Chinese preferred green teas, delicate and cleansing the Irish embraced the strong, malty Assam leaves of India, blending them with brisk teas from Ceylon and later Kenya. And we added milk.
When the first fragile porcelain cups of tea arrived in Europe, milk was poured in first — not out of culinary daring but to stop the china from cracking. By the time the Irish got their hands on the darker, stronger Assam teas, milk wasn’t just practical, it was essential. A splash softened the tannins, turned bitterness into comfort and made tea hearty enough to be a meal in itself. In a defiant move away from colonial norms or just maybe, we didn’t have china cups, we added the milk after the tea was poured. In India too, tea took on milk and spices too — becoming chai. The
words themselves tell a story: cha in the East, tea in the West, and Ireland sitting somewhere in between, a land where milk was always plentiful, and tea soon became the people’s brew.
That drop of milk was no small matter. It transformed tea into something fortifying, almost nourishing, especially when paired with bread or a slice of currant cake. In times of hardship, a pot of tea was a meal and a comfort, one that steadied nerves, revived spirits and when shared, reminded us we were not alone. Perhaps that is why Ireland, far from the tea fields of Assam or Kenya, drinks more tea per head than almost anywhere else on earth. For the growers, tea may be commerce; for us, it became kinship. Folklore has long held tea as a cure-all. “A strong cup will settle you after a shock,” older generations would say, and modern science would agree — black tea contains theanine, an amino acid that helps calm the mind. Its antioxidants support heart health, and when brewed not too strong, it can gently aid digestion. Green tea, lighter and grassy, is rich in catechins, protective plant compounds. While it may not replace the beloved morning Barry’s or Lyons, it can offer clarity in the afternoon or a gentle lift when coffee feels too much.
And then there are the brews that never saw a tea plantation at all. Strictly speaking, they are not teas but tisanes, yet they have a long tradition in Ireland where the hedgerow and the garden were once our medicine chest. As the year tips into Autumn, people turned from Summer’s delicate blossoms to sturdier roots and leaves. Hawthorn berries were simmered into a heart tonic, mullein leaves steeped to ease coughs and thyme brewed to chase away stubborn colds. Elecampane root, slow-simmered in a concoction, was prized for bronchial troubles, while roasted dandelion root made a bitter infusion to stir the liver and digestion. Nettles, rich in minerals, could be cut and brewed once more, even late in the year.
The method mattered as much as the plant itself. A gentle infusion suited soft leaves and flowers, coaxing out their lighter qualities. Tougher roots demanded a concoction — a proper simmer to release their strength. Each way of brewing matched the character of the herb: gentle for the gentle, fire for the fiery, echoing the folk wisdom that medicine should meet us where we are.
Our beloved black tea, too, can be dressed for the colder months. A slice of fresh ginger in the pot warms from within, lemon lends brightness and a shot of vitamin C, while honey soothes a scratchy throat. A pinch of cinnamon, clove, or cardamom transforms the familiar brew into something close to chai, rich with spice and comfort. These little additions remind us that tea is not only refreshment but medicine, a daily ritual of health as well as hospitality, carrying us through the darker seasons.
And perhaps the greatest benefit lies not in the chemistry but in the ritual. The pause, the steam rising, the cup warming your hands — these are acts of mindfulness as old as any meditation practice.
So next time you lift the cup, remember it carries more than leaves — it holds trade and tradition, comfort and cure, welcome and wit. Tea is Ireland’s true national treasure — and the story we tell every time the kettle sings.

Husband Murders Wife
-Sheffield Daily Telegraph 10 July 1885
An Inquest was held yesterday at Duagh on the body of Catherine Nolan, who was killed by her husband, Bartholomew Nolan, on Wednesday morning at Seraghan, (Possibly Scrahan), a townland near Duagh. From medical evidence, it appeared that deceased had four large, contused wounds on her head, besides several other wounds and minor injuries.
At the inquest, a daughter of the deceased described the attack by her father on her mother. The jury found that deceased died from wounds inflicted by her husband while he was insane. The accused was brought to jail in Tralee last night under a strong escort.
Killed By Lightening In Ventry
-Kerry Evening Post 29 January 1840
A most fatal accident occurred at Fawn (Fahan) in the parish of Ventry, on Saturday last. During a raging thunderstorm, a bolt of lightning struck a house where a number of local people were assembled.
One of them, a woman, was struck dead on the spot. Two men were so terribly scorched and wounded that there is little hope for their recovery or survival.
Large Shark Captured
-Cork Constitution 15 May 1891
A large basking shark was captured in Tralee Bay, off Brandon Point, last night. The fish, which weighed about seven tons became entangled in the nets of the fishing smack Perseverance and was easily disposed of. The shark was towed into Fenit this morning and is now lying at the south of the pier. The nets of the fishing smack were destroyed by the shark. A sum of ten pounds was offered for the carcase by an agent of Smith and Lawson.
(Something similar happened to Bob Goodwin of Fahamore, Maharees, years ago when going fishing in his half-decker. He was towing a canoe when a basking shark got entangled in the tow rope. The shark pulled the canoe under the water. Bob managed to get the shark untangled but the canoe was damaged.)
Dingle Under Seige
-Kerry Evening Post 15 February 1921
For almost a week now the Dingle Peninsula has been under siege by the military and police, and a house-to-house search has been in progress. An area of about 40 miles has been cut off from all communication with the mainland and traffic on the Tralee and Dingle railway has been closed down.
The authorities believe that several wanted men are hiding in the mountainous region of the peninsula. Destroyers guard the coast to ensure that nobody escapes by sea, and an impassable line of troops is drawn across the neck of the peninsula. Female searchers accompany the police.
A telegram dispatched on Saturday by a stationmaster on the railway line was received at the headquarters of the Irish Railway Clerks Association yesterday. It reads; “Supplies exhausted, women and children on verge of starvation”.
What Happened To My Cow?
-Cork Examiner 17 November 1862
On the night of last Saturday week, a cow belonging to a farmer named Michael Walsh, who lives near Dingle, strayed from its owner’s land and on Sunday an extensive search was made for the animal.
The cow’s hide was found in the house of Patrick Goold, a butcher living
in Dingle. Goold’s defence is that he purchased the cow from Mrs. Walsh, and his claim is accepted. It is known that the domestic relationship between Mr. and Mrs. Walsh is difficult.
Wrecked Off Brandon
-Shipping and Mercantile Gazette 10 February 1870
The Brigantine Martha 162 tons of and from Newfoundland, was heading for Bristol with a cargo of fish oil and port wine when she encountered fearsome weather. She left St. Johns (N.F.) on January 4th and experienced reasonable weather conditions for the following eight days.
For the next ten days the ship was exposed to constant north westerly gales followed by five days of reasonable conditions. However, the gales returned with a vengeance causing the ship to lose her topsail, main sail, foresail and jib.
Her water casks were washed overboard, her jollyboat broken, all her oars were lost, and bulwarks washed away. The situation was so desperate that the captain decided to throw some of the cargo overboard. Fortunately, the pumps remained working all the time.
The ship had to run for Brandon Head but finding it impossible to save the vessel they got into the longboat. Having no oars they used parts of the broken bulwarks to navigate. Their distress was spotted by local pilot Denis Lynch who came out from Brandon in a canoe with four men and towed the longboat into port.
The coastguard and constabulary protected the remaining portion of the ship’s cargo, and several locals were employed in saving some of it. Gradually, the Martha was broken up and to prevent the wreck from being washed ashore they let go both anchors in five fathoms.
“Writing as someone who has crossed the Atlantic numerous times in terrible weather conditions, and on very large oil tankers, the thought of crossing in a vessel of 160 tons, in the above conditions, is chilling. Still, ships did it for hundreds of years despite countless losses).
Wakes
-The Graphic 02 November 1878
Funeral customs in the west are peculiar. Three candles are burnt before a child, signifying the Trinity, and twelve before a grown person, signifying the twelve Apostles. However, when the master of a house dies the tradition of the wake is very different.
The hearth is swept up that night, and the tongs and a few sods of turf are placed by the fire, so that, should the master reappear, everything would be found ready for him. The cost of providing whisky and tobacco at Irish wakes can be challenging for homes with little incomes.
However, hospitality is a virtue which, though not always practiced by the upper classes, is sure to be found among the bare-legged inhabitants of the mountainous regions of the west. They are always ready to bring out cups of milk and never expect a reward.

Mass At Glubba Mountain, Ballyledder
Thanks to all who walked to the Grotto at Cnoc Póg Ríocht (more commonly known as Glubba mountain), Ballyledder, Beaufort, Co. Kerry. This was a very special occasion as the grotto was built over 50 years by a very determined and caring man from the area, Tom “Tomásín” O’ Sullivan. Tom got the notion that the people of Ballyledder and Kilgobnet needed a grotto and so he went to work. He hauled stone, sand and cement by hand in fertiliser bags, from the nearby areas of Keel & Kilgobnet, up the mountain. He was a powerful and strong man, and did all of this work on his own in the evenings after his normal working day. When the
DINGLE CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP
grotto was built (about 2 years later) he cycled all the way to knock and back, to get a suitable statue. This was a selfless task, he built the grotto for the people of the area, and a year later built a grotto on Cruach Mhór, on the way up to Carrauntouhil.
Since Tom passed 25 years ago, his neighbours and friends, Micheal O’ Sullivan, Mary Duffy (O’Sullivan) and Roisín Duffy have been diligently maintaining the grotto, painting it several times a year and bringing fresh flowers for the altar regularly. We are truly blessed to have such caring people in our community. A special thanks to those who walked to the grotto for the inaugural mass.

Ceiliúradh Céad Bliain ar Thadhg Ó Conchubhair na Gráige (Cuid 3)
Roibeard Ó Cathasaigh
Cuirfead clabhsúr san alt seo (an 3ú ceann sa tsraith) lem choimriú deiridh ar ár gceiliúradh le linn Féile Lios Póil ’25 ar Thadhg Ó Conchubhair (18401925). Cuireadh casadh comhaimseartha ar chúrsaí i dTigh a’ Bháid na Min Airde, le cumadóirí comhaimseartha a choinníonn traidisiún éigse Thaidhg beo. Orthu siúd, an té seo a leanas:
Eibhlín Uí Ialaithe
Is mise Eibhlín Uí Ialaithe nó Eibhlín Ní Bheagaloich ó Bhaile ’n Chaladh ó dhúchas. Is iar-mhúinteoir scoile mé agus táim ag scríobh anois ó timpeall 2007. Is amhlaidh a bhíos ag éisteacht le Raidió na Gaeltachta tráthnóna éigin agus iad ag cur síos ar mheath na Gaelainne sa Ghaeltacht. Rúrt liom féin go bhféasfainn rud éigin beag a dhéanamh chun nathanna cainte agus canúint na háite, a bhí fachta agamsa le h-oidhreacht, a chaomhnú. Mar sin, an tráthnóna fómhair sin scríobhas mo chéad dán, ‘Na Buataisí Buí’, agus nuair a bhí ceithre dhán agus daichead scríte agam sheolas go dtí Pádraig Ó Snodaigh i gCoiscéim iad, beannacht Dé leis, agus ar deireadh thiar thall foilsíodh mo chéad leabhar Na Buataisí Buí i 2009. Bhí ana-thóir ar an leabhar agus tá fós.
– sa chomhthéacs seo, is annamh a luaitear ainm an chumadóra, agus is mó cumadóir atá ag scríobh anso timpeall, ach, n’fheadar éinne cé h-iad! Tá sé cinn de leabhair sa tsraith Orla Uan scríte agam leis – scéalta beaga iad seo mar gheall ar uainín a chónaíonn ar Chruach Mhárthain agus go bhfuil Gaelainn líofa aici – Gaelainn chanúnach Chorca Dhuibhne – gné ar leith de shaol na tuaithe á dh’eachtraí i ngach leabhar acu. Tá dlúthdhiosca leo, mé féin ag insint an scéil, agus mac mo dhearthár Liam Ó Beaglaoich, go binn ar an mbosca ceoil chun ná raghadh aon insint chun leadráin! Ar deireadh, táim fós ag scríobh, agus mo ghuí go bhfoilseofar cnuasach dánta dem chuid im chéad leabhar eile sara fada. Gura míle maith agaibh as éisteacht liom, agus mo bhuíochas le Coiste Féile Lios Póil as cuireadh a thabhairt dom labhairt anso tráthnóna.
Seán Ó Muineacháin
Chuir san ana-mhisneach orm agus leanas orm ag scríobh. Uaireanta dhúisínn i lár na hoíche, chuimhnínn ar chúpla líne, scrínn síos sa doircheacht iad – ‘an rud a scríobhann an púca leann sé féin é’ a deirid, ach ba mhinic a theip orm pé rud a bhí scríte a léamh ar maidin! Pá scéal é, nuair a bhí ocht ndán is daichead eile nua-scríte agam chuas fé dhéin an Snodach arís, agus tháinig Mo Ghúna Síoda Buí ar an saol i 2010. Tá an leabhar so beagán níos a ghreanta ná mo chéad iarracht, mar tá pictiúirí ann – iad cruthaithe go h-ealaíonta ag Dómhnal Ó Bric agus ag leanaí ón gceantar – na dánta seo beagainín níos dúshlanaí ó thaobh teanga de chomh maith.
Agallaimh Beirte agus Lúibíní
Tar éis cúpla bliain ach go háirithe, tháinig an bheirt gharsún seo chugam féachaint an scríobhfainn ‘agallamh beirte’ dóibh (cruthaítear ‘agallamh beirte’ mar argóint idir bheirt, agus gur sa trasnaíl eatarthu a bhíonn an seó). Bhíodar tar éis a bheith thall ag an Oireachtas i gCill Airne, chualadar lúibíní don gcéad uair agus thaitníodar go diail leo. Anois, ní raibh faic mar sin scríte agam cheana agus n’fheadar cá dtosnóinn. Chughas ar youtube, d’éistíos le lúibíní agus le hagallaimh beirte breátha, agus d’fhreastalaíos ar dhá cheardlamm le Seán Ó Muineacháin, sár-údar ar lúibíní agus agallaimh beirt ó Chill na Martra. Leis an spreagadh den scoth úd, thugas fé lúibín a chruthú – ‘Ciuca Spórt’ a bhí mar theideal air, agus dhein mo bheirt ana-láimh air, cé nár bhuadar aon duais dá n-iarracht, ach, ní h-í an bhuachtaint is tábhachtaí ach an rannpháirtíocht, gan dabht. Bhí an scéal amuigh!, an bhliain dár gcionn iarradh orm Agallamh Beirte a scríobh do ‘Stáitse na n-Óg’ ar dtúis, agus ansan don Oireachtas. Eagraíonn Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne ‘Stáitse na nÓg’ gach fómhar roimis an Oireachtas in Áras Bhréanainn, a gceanncheathrú nua den chéadscoth ar an mBuailtín. Tugann san ana-mhisneach d’ógánaigh an cheantair mar faigheann na héinne seans dul ar an stáitse. Scríobhas an tAgallamh Beirte dár teideal, ‘Clampar agus Buairt i dTigh Bheití agus Mhuiris’ – agallamh seoigh, agus beirt den scoth á aithris, Róisín Dalby agus Antain Ó Seaghdha.
Beití: A Mhuiris, ní chreidim gur tú atá ansan romham/cheapas go raibh an teitheadh curtha agam ortsa go deo/ó fuaireamar an colscaradh ar maidin Dé hAoine.
Muiris: Ní mar a síltear a bítear, a ghrá/táimse anso ar do tháirseach chun a fháil amach cén fáth…?
Táim ag scríobh Lúibíní agus Agallaimh Beirte don aos óg ó shin, agus go leor duaiseanna buaite – iad ar an dteilifis agus ar an raidió go rialta
Bhí de phríbhléid againn Seán Ó Muineacháin a bheith farainn, chomh maith. Saineolaí sa chumadóireacht chomhaimseartha idir ‘amhráin’ is ‘lúibíní’ agus ‘ceapóga’ é Seán atá dulta i bhfeidhm ar ghlúinte taibhléiritheoirí ina phaiste dúchais, Cill na Martra, agus duaiseanna Oireachtais gan áireamh buaite aige féin thar na mblianta. Chuir Seán agus Seosaimh Ó Críodáin an t-agallamh beirte ‘Uachtarán Nua san Áras’ bí ag trácht ar thráthúlacht! – inár láthair le barr líofachta is máistreachta ar an gceird, agus lena chois sin, roinn Seán míreanna linn as an bhfoilseachán breá is déanaí uaidh, The Cuckoo Sings in May, leabhar, + dlúthdhiosca. Seo véarsa ón amhrán álainn ‘Ár dTeanga Bhinn Bheo’ (Fonn: Ó ‘’Bhean a ’Tí, 2019. 46); Caníg le mórtas Róisín Dubh/ Is bíodh Dónal Óg á cheol agaibh/Bímis ag Ól le Cleaganna Nua/Agus bainigí gleo as Ólaim Puins.
RÓCathasaigh, Bosco Ó Conchúir, Joe Ó Críodáin, Eibhlín Uí Éalaithe, Seán Ó Muineacháin, Robert Ó Brosnacháin.
‘Lorg na mná caoiche agus a fir ar a chéile’ Má bhí Beití is Muiris in adharca a chéile san agallamh beirte comhaimseartha ó pheann Eibhlín níos túisce, bhí binb idir shúgradh is dáiríre le brath sa léiriú fuaimneach a dhein Proinnsiasa Ní Chathasaigh agus a deartháir Gabriel ar an agallamh beirte ‘Lorg na mná caoiche agus a fir ar a chéile’ ó mhealbhóg Thaidhg (Ó Morónaigh, 2005 136-7). Ba bheag a cheap Tadhg Ó Conchubhair go mbeadh míreanna dá stór fós ar bheolaibh chomharsain leis i Lios Póil breis is céad bliain tar éis a bhailithe uaidh – ’gus ba mhaith mar a labhradh:
An Bhean: Véarsa 2: Tá a fhios ag an dtalamh ná beinn i gcúram an scraiste/ach gur ghoid sé ag imeacht mo leathchoróin uaim/ Ach b’fhéidir leis an Athair-Mac sar a mbeidh bliain eile caite ’ge/Go bhfeicfinn á thachtadh le córda é.
An Fear: Má chíonn sibh an chaidir istoíche nó ar maidin/Aithneó’ sibh go tapaidh an stuaire/Tá a gruaig ina sop reaca, an tsúil chlé aici leachta/’S bhain tincéir i Malla leathchluais di.
Ar deireadh, buíochas ó chroí le gach éinne a thacaigh lenár gceiliúradh, ag cóiriú na cistine is na sóláistí blasta, gan dabht le Galway Johnson, agus le ‘Síol’, Ealaín na Gaeltachta.

Agóid Cearta i mBaile Átha Cliath
D’fhág bus ó Chorca Dhuibhne go moch ar maidin Dé Sathairn seo caite, agus naoinar déag ar bord, chun páirt a ghlacadh sa mhórshiúl “Cearta,” i mBaile Átha Cliath. Bhí sé mar aidhm ag an agóid seo cearta teanga a éileamh, chomh maith le aird a tharraingt ar chúrsaí tithíochta sa Ghaeltacht, maoiniú cuí don Ghaeilge, agus an tábhacht a bhaineann le hoideachas trí mheán na teanga. Bhí atmaisféar fíorspreagúil le brath ar shráideanna na príomhchathrach, áit a raibh breis agus 25,000 duine bailithe le chéile i ndlúthpháirtíocht leis an nGaeilge agus leis na ceantair Ghaeltachta. Labhair daoine óga, múinteoirí, gníomhaithe teanga agus ionadaithe
pobail go paiseanta faoin ngá le gníomh práinneach ó thaobh na teanga de.Bhí bród ar mhuintir Chorca Dhuibhne a bheith i láthair mar chuid den slua mór, agus mothúchán láidir ann go raibh muid ag seasamh ar son rud atá fíorthábhachtach – todhchaí inmharthana don Ghaeilge agus do na pobail ina labhraítear í mar theanga bheo.
Ár mbuíochas le Maidhc Ó Mainín agus Cornaí as an mbus a thiomáint dúinn agus buíochas ó chroí le gach éinne a shiúl linn ar an lá

Cearta - Agóid Náisiúnta na nGael
D’ardódh sé do chroí na sluaite a fheiscint i mBaile Átha Cliath ag Agóid Náisiúnta na nGael - CEARTA, a bhí ann le deanaí. Thaistil níos mó ná 30 bus ó fud fad na tíre, idir óg agus aosta le bheith páirteach. Ba mhór an onóir dúinne a bheith i measc an 25000 duine a shiúil ó Chearnóg Pharnell ar an lá. Slua a bhí lán d’fhuinnimh agus lán de dhóchas. Comhghairdeachas ó chroí leis na héinne a bhí bainteach leis an eagrúcháin ar an lá. Tá súil againn go mbeidh tionchar aige seo ar bhuiséad na bliana seo chugainn, agus ar thodhchaí na teangan.
A national protest for the Irish Language and Gaeltacht took place last weekend. We were honoured to walk among the 25,000 people from Parnell Square on the day. Over 30 buses traveled from all over the county, young and old to be part of the first protest for the Irish language in over 10 years. The crowd was full of energy and hope, it would lift your heart to see it. A huge congratulations to everyone that was part of the organising of the day. We hope that this will have a positive impact on next years budget, and the future of the language.

Susan Ní Chríodáin, from Dingle, took second place in the 2025 U.K. Business Book Awards at a function in London two weeks ago. There were fifteen categories in the overall awards and Susan’s book, Leading Beyond the Numbers, was in the Business Book category that develop or inspire leadership skills for positive impact.
Her book is a fresh approach to leadership with the focus on seismic change in the workplace. Drawing on her own experiences from finance director to facilitator and leadership coach Susan invites leaders to look beyond profits and focus on how their workers feel.
Her book was one of ten books, in her category, which had been short listed last May. There is only one winner in each category plus one runner-up. Susan didn’t win but was shocked when it was announced, at a black-tie event in London, that she had taken second place.
“It was like the Oscars! I was in shock! – I just couldn’t believe it when my name was announced. I was presented with a big glass trophy and then whisked away to be interviewed and photographed. It was a whirlwind” she told West Kerry Live.
Some comments about her book from reviewers:
“This book is genius”, “Susan has devised a roadmap for measuring the unmeasurable,” and “This is a unique and thought-provoking book which can make the workplace truly productive”.
Leading Beyond the Numbers is available from Bookshops and online.
Éacht - agus Dúshlán!
Mícheál Ó hUanacháin
Níl insint scéil ar an iontas a bhí ar phobal na peile le toradh chluiche Chorn an FAI idir Chiarraí agus Shligeach.
Is minic sa chorn toradh maith ag foireann Céad Sraithe, nó neamh-Shraithe féin, ar fhoireann Phríomh-Shraithe. Cuid é sin den tar raingt iontach atá ag an gCorn ar lucht tacaíochta an chluiche.
Ach is annamh go deo cúrsa mar a bhí idir lucht na Ríochta agus na cuairteoirí coicíos ó shin, agus an teacht aniar éachtach a rinne an fhoireann baile. Nuair a bhíodar dhá chúl ar gcúl ag leath-ama, bhí cuid mhór dá raibh ann, nó ag féachaint ar an gcluiche ar an gcóras teoranta LOI TV, a chreid go raibh a bport seinnte.
Tar éis an tsaoil, nár éirigh le Owen Elding dhá chúl a bhaint in imeacht cúpla nóiméad tar éis ceathrú uaire, gan aon chosaint fiúntach air. Agis ba chosúil críoch an chluiche bheith bainte ag an bhfear céanna ceathrú uaire isteach sa dara leath.
“Cleas an hata”, mar a deirtear. Agus ní minic a leithéid á chloí, go háirithe ag foireann as leibhéal níos ísle cumais.
Ach bhí Cian Brosnan tugtha isteach mar fhear ionaid ag an mbainisteoir, Colin Healy, tar éis an chéad dá chúl, agus tugadh Daniel Okwute isteach le linn an dara leath, agus bhí páirt ag an mbeirt san méid a tharla ina dhiaidh sin.
Brosnan a thosaigh an athbheochan, le buille álainn ó uille an-ghéar, nach raibh aon seans ag Sam Sargeant ar a shábháil. Deich nóiméad ina dhiaidh sin, leag Oliver Denham Okwute gar don chúl, agus scóráil Joe Adams leis an gcic éirice a lean.
San am cúiteamh ghortaithe, seo Brosnan arís le cúl a thug comhscór dóibh, le cúnamh Okwute. B’éigean Am Breise a imirt, agus ba ghearr dá
chríoch san a tháinig an t-aon chúl eile a scóráladh, an uair seo le Okwute, a ghnóthaigh áit do na Ciarraígh sna cluichí leath-Chraoibhe.
Beidh turas go Tamhlacht orthu sa leath-Chraobh sin, agus curaí na Sraithe, Ruagairí na Seamróige, mar chéilí comhraic ann acu. Mar a deirtear go minic, is féidir toradh ar bith bheith ar chluiche Coirn, agus beidh lucht leanúna mhuintir Thrá Lí i ndóchas go mbeidh an t-ádh orthu i mBleá Cliath mar a bhí i bPáirc Chnocán an Iolair.
Níl mórán slí againn don dá chluiche eile a imríodh ó shin: teip ar éigin i gColáiste Ollscoile Bhaile Átha Cliath le péire cúl ag na scoláirí in aghaidh ceann aonair ó Ronan Teahan, agus comhscór gan cúl sa bhaile an Luan seo caite is Baile Átha Luain ar cuairt acu. Ciallaíonn an pointe a fuaireadar sa chluiche deireanach sin nach féidir go bhfágfar ag bun na Sraithe anois iad, is cuma cé chomh maith a imríonn Átha Luain as seo amach. Tugaim faoi ndeara go mbeidh Ciarraí ar na clubanna a bheidh páirteach i Sraith nua Forbairt na mBan ón séasúr seo chugainn ar aghaidh. Gan dabht, beidh an-chuid cainte air sin amach anseo!

This year’s Architecture week is packed with lots to see and do thoughout the county, and here in Dingle we have an afternoon of creative fun for all ages to come and ‘Be an Architect for a Day’ (under 16’s must be accompanied by an adult). An Diseart will host this event which runs from 1.30 to 5pm and together we will look at some of the design ideas for this iconic building in the heart of the town, along with the Gallarus Oratory, the Blasket Centre and maybe a contemporary home too. However, this afternoon is not intended to be an academic study of the subject, rather it will be more of a light hearted way of looking at Architecture whilst having the freedom of your own creative expression to make a contribution to a scale model of ‘My Town-Land’ which we will build throughout the session.
This is a practical hands on session with no previous experience needed, we’ll use simple creative tools (card, tape, felt pens etc) to make up what we feel is missing from our own town, or just something which we feel would be fun to make…a swimming pool, a museum, a new church perhaps. The possibilities are endless. By the end of the day we shall have created a set of scaled buildings, which will be born out of each person attending’s imagination.
“So, get ready to ‘Be an Architect for a day’ and drop in for as short or as long a stay as you like. See you there.”
- Ben Dearnley. Sculptor.

West Kerry GAA

In their first round county championship game against South Kerry at Killorglin, West Kerry started well and were 2 points up after 2 minutes. However the southern lads soon found their rhythm and after 18 minutes were four points clear having notched up 1-6. The west fought back and were just a point behind at half time, playing against the wind, on a score of 1-8 to 1-7. Nicely positioned one might think. But it was the south that surged ahead in second half scoring three points without reply. This was due to the fact that they were winning all the breaking ball at midfield and delivering fast ball to their forwards. However they will rue a missed goal chance on the 50th minute which might have put the game beyond the west’s reach. West Kerry gradually fought their way back into game and by the 53rd minute had drawn level. The score now stood at 1-13 each. An inspirational two pointer from Cathal Ó Beaglaoich on the 52nd minute prompted a West Kerry period of dominance. After drawing level the west then scored 4 points without reply leaving them four points clear by the 58th minute. The south fought hard to get back
and scored the final 2 points but West Kerry emerged as winners on a scoreline of 1-17 to 1-15.
Securing its first county championship win in 5 years left the west with a sense of relief rather than jubilation. They now have two weeks to prepare for next game. Having regard to the fact that An Ghaeltacht were not available for collective training prior to this ,it now gives management time and space to build a more cohesive unit and also time for tired bodies, knocks and injuries to heal. It can't have been easy on the Gaeltacht lads, comprising more than half the team, to turn out and give of their best after a hectic week for them.
Make no mistake about it South Kerry provided a serious test on the day and the westerners showed great belief and resourcefulness to come from behind and emerge victorious. Full credit to team and management. There is a lot of potential here and we wish them well going forward and hope they get the support they deserve.
West Kerry board congratulates An Ghaeltacht on winning the county intermediate championship with a great overall team performance. We wish them well in their quest for further success in All Ireland series to come.A special word of thanks and acknowledgment to a substantial
number of those players who turned out again for West Kerry training and Saturday game and played a major part in securing a win against South Kerry.

CAMP FAIR
Lashing and torrential rain did not dampen the spirits of all of the people who came out in numbers to Camp Fair on Thursday last. Minister Michael Healy Rae was one of the first to arrive to view the stock and talk to the farmers he represents in Dáil Éireann.
Valerie Sweeney, aka Professor for the day, was delighted with the huge array of wonderfully attired young people dressed in a myriad of great costumes…the quality was of such a high calibre, that there were prizes presented to all in the end.
Jacinta O'Brien was again very happy with the Pet Show entries. A wide range of animals showed up and again there was a prize for everyone and all went home very happy with the day.
The kitchen in the school was busy all day too and Sheila, Sandra and Gearoid fed all of us and the cuisine was top class, with fancy cookies and cakes all kindly donated on the day.
Mary Casey from Annascaul was there to celebrate another birthday, 91 years old on the Fair day. She met up with Mary Fitzgerald and her cousins Maureen Crean and Sheila Moynihan in The Junction Bar to enjoy one of Mary's Mutton pies.
O’Dwyers Mace and Annes Cafe were busy serving food all day, while Hannah cooked up delicious beef burgers outside Ashes Pub.
Gerhard Mulligan and James Bowler again entertained outside Ashe's after the Fair. There was music too in the Junction Bar.
Jimmy O'Dwyer called a one minute of silence to remember three of our loyal Camp Fair supporters, who passed away in the last few months.
John Prendiville - Lispole, Jackie Murphy - Gleann na nGealt and Amelia Day - Kilteenbane. Amelia, our Forever Queen of Camp Fair ! Rest In Eternal Peace all.
The Prendiville family, John's Daughters Amanda and Jane and Grandson Michael O'Dowd ably assisted by Uncle Dan sold rams again this year at the Fair, a perfect example of a family carrying on a tradition, even going back the generations to their Grand Uncle Tommy Griffin's time, a staunch Sheepman and Camp Fair supporter.
It is families like this that keep Camp Fair going into the future. Long may this lovely tradition continue.
The winners in the Quality Sheep and Pen Show this year are as follows:The Tommy Griffin Perpetual Cup for the best Vintage Pen was won by Jack Crean. Tom Batt O'Connor Cup was won by Jimmy O'Dwyer, Pen of quality sheep.
The Jack Quirke Cup won by Tom Griffin for Pen of Quality sheep.
The Michael J. O'Shea Cup was won by Michael O'Shea for the Millenium pen of quality sheep.

The Maureen and Brendan Deane Cup was won by Anna Griffin for her pen of quality sheep. Anna Griffin was also the winner of the Jimmy O'Dwyer cup for the U/15 best pen of sheep. Congratulations to all.
The Auction and the many other activities in support of Camp Junior Soccer this year was a huge success raising €4600 for the club.

Becoming Part of the Furniture
I’m becoming part of the furniture
I’m blending in with the place
I’ve been here so long For time out of mind
I’m in danger of fading away
Like that armchair of uncertain age
Those shelves that just stand around Nobody’s sure where they came from They’ve always been in the background
I’m becoming part of the scenery
To be anywhere else would be wrong
Maybe you just have to disappear
If you really want to belong

Tickets Now On Sale For Dingle Literary Festival 2025
Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd of November 2025
Tickets for the highly anticipated Dingle Literary Festival 2025, taking place the weekend of November 21st to 23rd, are now on sale. Limited day and weekend passes are also available, offering access to an exciting lineup of both Irish and international authors. This year’s Dingle Lit promises a unique and lively literary experience set against the stunning backdrop of Corca Dhuibhne.
Acclaimed Irish author Eimear McBride will open the festival on Friday, November 21st and it will be closed by celebrated Irish actor and author Gabriel Byrne on Sunday, November 23rd.
The festival will showcase a host of esteemed writers, including:
• Eimear McBride, author of The City Changes Its Face. McBride has received critical acclaim throughout her career for her boundary defying approach to fiction, including the Baileys Women's Prize for Fiction for her debut novel A Girl Is a Half-formed Thing.
• Elaine Feeney, whose novel Let Me Go Mad In My Own Way has earned praise for its sharp prose and insight into contemporary Ireland. Feeney’s As You Were was longlisted for the Desmond Elliott Prize, and she was longlisted for the 2024 Booker Prize for her novel How to Build a Boat.
• Xiaolu Guo, an author, filmmaker, and academic whose work traverses borders and languages. Her novel A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers was shortlisted for the Orange Prize for Fiction, and her most recent novel, Call Me Ishmaelle, is a bold feminist retelling of Moby-Dick. She and Oisín Fagan, author of the epic, raucous novel Eden’s Shore, will discuss their shared draw towards and reimagining of the classic seafaring novel, exploring all its wild and turbulent possibilities.
• Katie Goh, the author of the beautiful and subversive hybrid memoir, Foreign Fruit, will be joined by award-winning novelist and artist Sara Baume to discuss tracing a complex history of identity, survival, and change.
• Diarmaid Ferriter, one of Ireland's leading historians, will join awardwinning Canadian historian Padraic X. Scanlon for a conversation offering new compelling insights into and perspectives on the causes and legacy of the Great Famine.
• Oluwaseun Olayiwola, a poet and choreographer whose erotic, ecological and philosophical collection of poems, Strange Beach, has stunned and entranced critics and readers.
• Niamh Ní Mhaoileoin, whose remarkable début novel Ordinary Saints won the inaugural PFD Queer Fiction Prize and shortlisted for both the Women's Prize Discovery Award and the Waterstones Debut Fiction Prize. In it, she explores the legacy of the Catholic church, familial bonds, grief, and queer identity.
• Poet Gustav Parker Hibbert, whose début collection High Jump as Icarus Story won both the John Pollard International Poetry Prize 2025 and the Southword Debut Poetry Collection Award 2025, and was shortlisted for numerous other awards, including the the prestigious T.S. Eliot Prize. The festival will feature a range of Irish-language events. Highlights include: Laoighseach Ní Choistealbha who will present her second poetry collection Mainistir na Feola. Painéal Cainte ar Chúrsaí Foilsitheoireachta will mark the milestones of Cló Iar-Chonnacht and Futa
Fata on publishing in Ireland. Micheál Ó Conghaile, Tadhg Mac Dhonnagáin, and Eoin P Ó Murchú will participate in the panel, chaired by Pádraic Ó Flatharta.
Workshops will include Dómhnal Ó Bric , one of Dingle’s artists, focusing on illustration; scriptwriting guidance by Richie Conroy; and oral poetry workshops led by Cormac Mac Gearailt.
Beo ar Éigean will return to Dingle, focusing on women in literature and women’s contributions to literature. Seoda na Sean will feature songs from the new collections of Pádraig Mac Cárthaigh, alongside traditional singing from Dingle by Páidí Mhárthain Mac Gearailt and Seán Mac an tSíthigh will present Fé Scáth na Cruaiche.
The festival will feature a wonderful lineup of children’s authors, including Paddy Donnelly, Claire Glynn, Tadhg Mac Dhonnagáin, Leon Diop, and Briana Fitzsimons. Tadhg, the founder of Futa Fata, is celebrating 20 years of bringing imaginative Irish-language children’s books to readers across the world. Claire Glynn is the founder of an award-winning baby sign programme and will be leading an ISL rhymeand-sign storytime for babies and toddlers. Briana Fitzsimons and Leon Diop are the authors of Black and Irish: Legends, Trailblazers & Everyday Heroes, which celebrates Black Irish public figures from the worlds of pop culture, politics, sport, business and the arts. Together with Paddy Donnelly, bestselling, award-winning author and illustrator of picture books like Fox & Son Tailers and Badger Books, these authors promise a fun, engaging, and creativity-sparking weekend of free children’s events.
This year’s Dingle Lit will also showcase a unique multimedia collaboration with The Adrian Brinkerhoff Poetry Foundation.
The full list of confirmed authors also includes: Wendy Erskine, Maurice Riordan, Sarah Moss, Pádraic Óg Ó Ruairc, Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin, Jennie Moran, John Patrick McHugh, Garrett Carr, Karim Kattan, Andrea Mara, Sarah Maria Griffin, Brendan Mac Evilly and Éireann Lorsung
Attendees can also enjoy readings from the winners of the 2024 Dingle Lit Short Story Competition, presented in both English and Irish. The complete schedule, which includes events, workshops, and ticket information, is available now on www.dinglelit.ie.
Hannah Bulger, this year’s Festival Director, commented:
"From celebrated voices to emerging talents, we are thrilled to present this energetic, bilingual programme full of creativity and exploration across genres. We endeavour to connect Corca Dhuibhne with the most exciting voices in both Irish and international literature, creating intimate and dynamic conversations that couldn’t happen anywhere else. We are proud to offer engaging and thought-provoking events for audiences of all ages, as well as a programme of generative workshops for anyone looking to advance or kickstart their own writing. We look forward to sharing spaces and stories in Dingle this November during a weekend celebrating writers, readers, and the enduring love of literature that connects us all.”

Ceann Sibéal Golf Club has held its Charity Golf Event again this year for the Cork/Kerry Health Link Bus and has been doing so for the past 10 years or so.

A superb event again this year, organised by the Club Seniors, on a beautiful
day with 29 teams participating and, most importantly, raising €7,200 for this very worthy cause.
Mar is léir ón suim a bailíodh tá an-mheas go deo ag daoine sa cheantar máguaird ar an gCarthanacht seo a chuireann tacaíocht fíor-thábhachtach ar fáil do dhaoine gur gá leo é.
As is evident from the size of the donation, this Charity is regarded as very important in our community, delivering very necessary support to patients who need it. Sincere thanks to all who contributed and supported.

Interpretation of Casement’s Amazon legacy set for Dún Chaoin and Tralee
In 1910, Irish humanitarian Roger Casement journeyed to the Amazon rainforest of Peru to investigate horrific atrocities committed against Indigenous communities by the rubber industry. His report—now known as The Blue Book—became a pivotal document in the history of human rights. Over a century later, Peruvian-Irish composer and guitarist Rodrigo Almonte brings Casement’s powerful testimony to life in Sounds of the Blue Book—a striking new suite of music that blends jazz, improvisation, and traditional Irish and Peruvian sounds into a moving and richly textured performance. Joined by acclaimed pianist Lorenzo Vitolo and drummer Matthew Jacobson, Almonte’s trio weaves historical narrative with emotive soundscapes that transport audiences through the Amazonian jungle, Indigenous rhythms, and echoes of a forgotten past.
The Trio will perform at Ionad An Bhlascaoid, Dún Chaoin on Thursday October 9th at 8pm and the following evening at Tobar Naofa, Tralee. Tickets available on eventbrite.ie
Tarte Tatin
Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School
An upside-down tart that always turns heads!
There are few desserts as simple yet impressive as a classic Tarte Tatin. Now is the perfect time to make it, with apples at their very best. Look for Irish or local apples if you can – varieties like Cox’s, Braeburn, or Honeycrisp strike a lovely balance of sweetness and bite, but don’t be afraid to try a heritage or farm-gate variety you come across. The key is choosing fruit that holds its shape once cooked, so you get those beautiful, tender pieces without them collapsing.
For the pastry, I’ve taken the easy route and used shop-bought puff pastry – the trick is to choose one with a high butter content, which gives a richer flavour. The process is straightforward: caramelise the apples in butter and sugar, top with pastry, and bake until golden and bubbling. When you flip it out, you’ll have a glossy, amber-topped tart that looks every bit the showstopper. Serve it warm vanilla ice cream – it’s a reminder that the best desserts are often the simplest.
Ingredients
90g caster sugar
20g butter
4-5 Braeburn or Honeycrisp apples, peeled and cut into even sized wedges
300g puff pastry (try to find a variety with butter if you can)
To serve
vanilla ice cream
Method
To prepare the apples, put the butter and sugar in an ovenproof frying pan and heat on the hob until the sugar has melted and the mixture is golden. Arrange the apples carefully around the edge of the pan first, working your way to the centre. Cook for a few mins until the apples begin to caramelise. Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured surface to a round a little larger than the pan. Place it over the apples, folding over the edges of the pastry until it fits the pan neatly.
Bake in a preheated oven, 200°C, for 35 - 40 mins until the pastry is golden. Leave to cool in the pan for 5 mins. Place a large plate on top and carefully flip it over.
Serve warm with some ice cream

It's All In The Mind
Why Meditate?
Orla Smyth
Mindful meditation is not a magical panacea to cure all ills…but it comes close! It is our super power and we all have access to it. A regular practice has been shown to support emotional health, reduce anxiety, improve mood and enhance relational skills. When we feel calm and steady we are better placed to navigate the twists and turns of everyday living.
Life is rarely plain sailing for very long. Nothing stays the same. Life happens : our very nature is change : the unpredictable happens - accidents, mistakes, the unknown : the inevitable happens - old age, illness, death. We cannot escape this truth but we don’t have to miss out on the awesome wonder of our existence by attempting to. We are constantly trying to bat the curveballs that life throws and it can be exhausting. Just trying to get through one hectic day after another can deplete our resources. When our energy is misplaced, stress levels soar, we develop maladaptive coping mechanisms and our health, well being and happiness is affected. When we meditate we help to clean away the information overload that builds up every day and contributes to stress levels. This clears the way, allowing us to deal with difficulties and
challenges more effectively by changing our habits of reactivity. With scientific research we now have a better understanding of how this all works.
Meditation has been around for thousands of years and modern science has begun to pay attention to it, in recent decades. The developments in neuroscience have allowed for great leaps to be made in research techniques, neuroimaging and analysis. We now know that neuroplasticity can generate new neural pathways which means it is possible to change the structure of the brain. Researchers have found consistent differences in several brain regions between meditation practitioners and non meditators. These were key areas related to meta awareness, emotional regulation and pain sensitivity. Findings at Boston University and Harvard Medical School have indicated that meditation ‘helps to alleviate anxiety and allows individuals better cope with stressful situations’ Mayo Clinic, the academic medical center focused on integrated healthcare, education and research claims the emotional and physical benefits of meditation can include:
Giving you a new way to look at things that cause stress.
Building skills to manage your stress. Making you more self-aware.
Focusing on the present.
Reducing negative feelings.
Helping you be more creative. Helping you be more patient.
Lowering resting heart rate.
Lowering resting blood pressure.
Helping you sleep better.
It can also help to alleviate Anxiety. Chronic pain.
Depression.
Irritable bowel syndrome.
Tension headaches.

Working remotely in Corca Dhuibhne? Join the crew!
Grow Remote is a social enterprise whose mission is to make good quality jobs available to everyone, wherever they live. Remote and hybrid working is having a significant and positive impact on our communities, especially in Corca Dhuibhne, where for so long work opportunities were limited. The organisation helps workers find and thrive in remote jobs while also advocating on behalf of this sector. Workers who want to find remote jobs can head to www.growremote.ie where there are jobs boards and advice on landing work that they can do from anywhere.
Potential downsides of working remotely include isola-
tion, without colleagues next to you to share the load. To combat this, Grow Remote creates regular opportunities for remote workers to socialise and connect with each other. Towns across Ireland have local chapters with volunteer leaders setting up social events to enable locals meet-up. Aodán Ó Conaill & Judy O'Shea lead the Dingle Chapter - one of Ireland’s largest with over 130 members and continuing to grow. Other parts of Kerry have chapters too - remote workers can attend any chapter’s events.
Circa 18 members of Dingle/Corca Dhuibhne chapter met up recently and had a great social evening. Several of those were newcomers (returnees or new to the area) who took a chance on joining-in with something they hadn't done before. Because we aim to keep it informal and friendly, they were rewarded with getting to know regular attendees and a relaxed jovial occasion resulted.
Introductions made at events like these are a great springboard for further connection, which in turn is undoubtedly helping build a stronger, better connected
ing etc There are apps and podcasts and books seemingly making it all more accessible but many of us think ‘that’s not for me’ ‘I don’t have time’ ‘I can’t sit still’ ‘ I can’t stop my thoughts’ Everybody can meditate. It’s not reserved for folks with a ‘higher understanding’ or ‘greater insight’, geniuses like Steve Jobs or spaced out hippies like Ram Dass. Meditation is for busy parents, overwhelmed students, corporate executives, retired pensioners. If you are open and curious, you can do it. It requires no effort. As soon as you start trying, it becomes hard work! All you need to do is show up. It's simply about making the choice to do it - no props or accoutrements are necessary, no special time or place -just do it!

Land Is All That Matters le Myles Dungan
foilsithe i Sasana ag
Head of Zeus (Bloomsbury)
In this epic narrative, Myles Dungan examines two hundred years of agrarian conflict from the ruinous famine of 1741 to the eve of World War Two. It explores the pivotal moments that shaped Irish history: the rise of `moonlighting', the infamous Whiteboys and Rightboys, the insurrection of Captain Rock, the Tithe War of 1831 - 1836, the Great Famine of 1845 that devastated the country and drastically reduced the Irish population, and the Land War of 1878 - 1909, which ended by transferring almost all the landlords' holdings to their tenants. These events take place against the backdrop of prevailing British `rule' and stark class and wealth inequality.
