Dingle Food Festival

All of the local taste and none of the waste!

Taking place from Friday the 3rd to Sunday the 5th of October, food lovers are in for a treat as local food is celebrated as the hero of this year's Dingle Food Festival. Zero Waste will once again be a key driver of the 2025 Food Festival, as Dingle continues on its mission to be the first Irish “Zero Landfill Waste” festival.

Over the weekend the Bia Dingle Marketplace, in the centre of the town, will highlight the local food of the Dingle Peninsula as festival goers can meet local producers and literally taste the peninsula! Festivities kick off Friday night with Ceiliúradh Bídh Chorca Dhuibhne. This ticketed event is a harvest celebration of the naturally produced food & drink from the Dingle Peninsula, intertwined with local music, song, food and drink to celebrate the food traditions of Corca Dhuibhne.

Festival Masterclasses invite visitors to learn from the best! and include, Cork based Chef Takashi Miyazaki - who was awarded a prestigious Michelin Star in his first year after opening Ichigo Ichie, Asia Mahealani McDonagh, the first ever Irish Pâtisserie Champion and the owner of Mahealani Pastries in Galway and Dingle's very own Peter White, founding member and former president of the Irish Whiskey Society.

The Dingle Food Festival, with the help of the local community sustainability group Transition

Corca Dhuibhne, is continuing on its mission to be Zero-Waste to landfill. Festival goers are encouraged to bring their own bowl, cutlery and cup to help in the effort of reducing the huge waste that is being created by the festival. Rinse stations and waste segregation bins will be provided. There will be stainless steel bowls available to rent and return and also festival packs on sale consisting of a bamboo bowl and cutlery set. Taste trail and market outlets will only be serving food onto reusable tableware, with the main aim being to reduce the amount of disposable packaging over the weekend.

Highlights of this year’s festival include the much loved Taste Trail, where festival goers purchase a book of taste tickets and get to sample food delights throughout the picturesque town. Along with the numerous masterclasses and workshops, there will be over 70 market stalls, street entertainment, live music and kids activities… there really is something for everyone! Tickets for all masterclass and workshops can be purchased from dinglefood.com

Spilling the Beans on Legumes and Pulses!

Beans, often overlooked in modern cooking, are nutritional powerhouses with a remarkable array of healthy benefits. If you could slap health claims on a can of beans, it would read like a miracle cure: reduces cholesterol, lowers the risk of heart disease, prostate and colorectal cancer, breast cancer, helps regulate glucose imbalances associated with type 2 diabetes, hypoglycemia, obesity and metabolic syndrome. Dan Buettner, founder of the Blue Zones, attributes longevity and lifelong good health to the power of a daily dose of beans. Yet, here in our “sophisticated” world, beans are not worthy enough to be included in our culinary repetoire. More the pity for us!

Before I go any further let’s demystify the world of beans, legumes and pulses;

Beans: Beans are a type of legume. They are seeds that grow inside pods and come in various shapes and colours, like black beans, kidney beans, and pinto beans.

Legumes: Legumes are a broader category that includes beans, peas, lentils, and peanuts. They are whole plants that produce seeds in pods, such as beans and are known for their high protein content. Peanuts belong to this group too, go figure!

Pulses: Pulses are a subset of legumes. They are dried seeds from legume plants, such as dried peas, lentils, and chickpeas. Pulses are typically used in cooking after they have been dried.

So, in a nutshell (or a bean pod), all beans are legumes, but not all legumes are beans, and pulses are a specific type of dried legume. Got it? Now let’s continue…

The impressive health benefits of beans, as well as other legumes like peas and lentils, stem from their rich nutrient content. Legumes are a dietary staple worldwide (except in Ireland, UK and USA) and are renowned for being one of the best sources of soluble fibre. They are low in fat yet high in quality protein, making them a health-saving combination. But there’s more to this group of foods than meets the eye.

All beans, legumes and pulses are packed with essential nutrients, including folate, manganese, B-vitamins, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium , iron, copper and a host of antioxidants. Soybeans stand out for their plant sterols that help reduce cholesterol and isoflavones that mitigate the effects of oestrogen fluctuations seen in PMS and menopause. However, all the three musketeers (beans, legumes and pulses) contain these nutrients to varying degrees, depending on their variety, colour and origin.

Folate, sometimes referred to as vitamin B9, is found abundantly in black beans and dark green lentils. Folic acid is the synthetic, stable form used in supplements and fortified foods, while folate refers to the natural forms found in food. Folate (or folic acid) is especially crucial for women planning to conceive and during pregnancy to prevent neural tube defects in babies. It is a vital nutrient involved in DNA synthesis, cell growth and the metabolism of amino acids in all stages of life and big player in protecting our cognitive function as we age.

Soluble fibre in beans plays a vital role in lowering harmful LDL cholesterol levels, thereby reducing the risk of heart disease. The old saying "beans, beans are good for the heart" still holds true! By slowing down carbohydrate absorption, soluble fibre in beans helps stabilize blood glucose levels, a boon for people with diabetes. Additionally, soluble fibre binds to toxins in the body, aiding in their safe elimination via the bowel. Beans also provide substantial insoluble fibre, which promotes digestive health, nourish our microbiome and prevents constipation.

wBoth types of fibre are lacking in the modern diet, with most adults falling far short of the recommended daily intake. Incorporating a bowl of beans or lentils into your daily meals can help bridge this nutritional gap and contribute to long-term health.

Beans are a dieter's best friend, promoting a sense of fullness and reducing hunger. Their low glycaemic index helps curb sugar cravings and the rollercoaster ride that often accompanies the consumption of highly refined grains such as white bread, pasta, corn and rice products. Substituting these type of carbohydrates with beans, peas, or lentils, combined with whole grains, provides an amino acid profile comparable to animal protein but with significant benefits for you, for animal welfare and the environment.

Concerns about excessive flatulence are a common deterrent to including more of these powerhouses in the diet. While it's true they can initially increase gas production due to their fibre content, this is often a temporary side effect. The digestive system adjusts to breaking down this fibre over time, reducing gas-related issues. Properly soaking dried beans for 1224 hours before cooking can significantly minimize gas production, as germination naturally breaks down some indigestible fibres. Adding strips of kombu (kelp) seaweed to the cooking water can enhance digestibility and flavour. If problems persist, digestive enzymes like papaya or bromelain may help reduce gas.

With many of us mindful of budget constraints, beans, legumes and pulses offer a cost-effective way to maintain good health and make the most of your budget. This is particularly valuable for families and students looking for healthy low-cost food staples. These foods are versatile and affordable, even in canned form, though it's essential to watch out for added sugar and salt. As the cooler seasons approach, there's no better time to embrace the wholesome goodness of beans, legumes and pulses. They can easily be incorporated into soups, stews, curries, casseroles, warm salads, and dips, making them a culinary gem. So, whether you're looking to boost your health or your budget, this triumphant trio have you covered. Enjoy! The Wonderful West Kerry Hedgerows Project

The 3 open workshops for the 'Wonderful West Kerry Hedgerows project' run by Ben Dearnley, saw over 60 people came and take part in this celebration of our beautiful hedges found here in West Kerry. With each person attending helping to create the 'coat of many colours' for the large sculpted Mr Fox! During each workshop the decorations become more and more colourful and each day Mr Fox became less Fox and more a celebration of the public's commitment to this project. Inspired by the varied collection of local flora and fauna, the sculpted animal has become a wonderful expression of our love for the natural environment which surrounds us.

Ben says:

"I'm delighted to see how this all turned out and with so many folks joining me, from the young to the...well let's just say, to the young at heart. You can see the different ideas which came to fruition in the paintings or fine pencil works and the varied display of creativity which reflects all the individuals who sat with me for a time during each of the 3 sessions. My only rule was that there are 'no rules in Art!' as each persons work is as valid as the next. For we are all creative beings and everyone has their own unique perspective and way to express themselves. Thank you to all who took part and we can all look forward to seeing the full exhibition of all 6 artists (film makers, printers, writers...) who are generating workshops on this theme later in the year."

A follow up exhibition will take place across the County in various locations, to find out more please keep an eye on future editions of this publication.

I.R.A Seize Cargo

-The Scotsman 25 October 1922

Ships carrying food to needy areas of Kerry for the past several weeks are being subjected to the most unpleasant experiences. Several instances have been known in which cargoes of food have been seized from those ships and taken to other than the intended destinations.

Recently the S. S. Irex, which has been running from Cork to western ports for some time now, was on her way to Castlemaine Harbour. As she was proceeding upriver a volley of rifle shots was sent across her bow. The steamer was immediately brought to shore and boarded by a body of Irregulars, (I.R.A.). They arrested the captain and demanded to know what cargo was on board and its destination. The captain told them the ship was carrying 250 tons of food for Killarney.

The officer in command of the boarding party replied: “Little of it will Killarney see, take your ship back to Dingle Pier.” The captain complied and the ship was relieved of its cargo in Dingle.

(Presumably, some of the IRA members remained on board for the trip to Dingle.)

Lifetime Punishment For Stealing a Cow

-Cork Constitution 02 August 1831

In the Criminal Court at the Tralee Summer Assizes this week Daniel Leary, who was charged with stealing a cow, was convicted and sentenced to Transportation for life. (Most likely sent to Australia or Van Dieman’s Land which became Tasmania in 1856.)

At the same court sitting Richard Stack was tried, convicted and sentenced to death for the violation of Catherine Cusack, at New-town Sandes. In this case the jury have recommended the prisoner to mercy, and no date has been set for his execution.

Flotilla For The Bishop

-Catholic Telegraph 06 September 1862

On the evening of Bishop David Moriarty’s visit to Dingle his carriage was met a short distance from the town by children bearing green branches, accompanied by a large crowd of people, who surrounded the carriage and warmly saluted the Bishop with hearty tokens of welcome.

Later he administered the Sacrament of Confirmation to 100 male and 80 female children in the Dingle temporary chapel. On Monday his Lordship confirmed some 50 children in the parish of Lispole and on Tuesday he went to Ventry.

His Lordship accepted a request from the fishermen of Dingle to travel back to the port by sea following the confirmation of some 50 Ventry area children. He went on board one of the Dingle hookers which, in paint and rig, was quite as trim as the most handsome yacht.

Out in Dingle Bay he met the extended fleet, crowded with the most respectable and well-dressed people, who were accompanied by musicians who filled the air with a concord of sweet sound. Forming a kind of triumphal procession each boat, filled with flags and streamers, saluted the Bishop’s vessel as they passed by.

On arrival in Dingle harbour the flotilla was greeted by crowds of people who occupied the whole length of the quay where His Lordship was greeted with more flowers and a bonfire.

The procession then paraded through the town to the cheers of the people who lined the footpaths, welcoming him on his first visit to west Kerry since his return from Rome.

(The construction of St. Mary’s Church began in 1862, the year of the Bishop’s visit to Dingle.)

Dingle Petty Sessions

-Kerry Evening Post 29 April 1893

The local constabulary had several people summoned for having unlicensed dogs. Nominal fines were imposed in each case. Michael Casey, Dunquin, summoned Michael Guiheen of the same place, for allowing his dog to hunt Casey’s sheep and for killing one of them.

Casey swore that the defendant was keeping his dog to hunt the sheep, and that if he only called the dog the sheep would not be killed. Guiheen was ordered to pay the sum of seven shillings, in compensation, and a further five shillings in costs.

Wildlife Shooting In Kerry

-Kerry Evening Post 01 February 1893

Wildfowlers have done well throughout the county this season. Curlews, wild geese and wild ducks have afforded much sport. Ducks are now numerous on Waterville Lake, but they are very wild. Plovers are very scarce at present.

Hares are numerous on all the principal shootings. Snipe shooting continues to be good and large bog areas have been the best locations especially on the moors in the Tralee, Dingle and Waterville districts. Colonel Peyton, out from the Bayview Hotel in Waterville, shot 34 snipe in four hours in Valentia Island.

Ballydavid Regatta

-Kerryman 01 July 1905

Regatta day in Baile na nGall was all that could have been expected on such a day of beautiful weather. By 3p.m. the little village presented an attractive and gay appearance, it being artistically decorated with flags and bunting.

The harbour was dotted with canoes, eager and ready for the challenges ahead. Each one sported a coloured flag, which fluttered gaily in the freshening breeze which blew from the slopes of Sliabh an Iolair.

Large contingents of spectators and supporters poured in from Dingle, Ventry, Ballyferriter, Brandon Creek and Dunquin. Not a single accident or disruption of any kind marred the day’s enjoyment – a situation for which those in charge of organising the event should be congratulated. There were six canoes in the first race which presented an exciting and closely contested finish, there being only a few yards between first and second. Many of those watching were in doubt as to who won it was so close, but Murreigh took the honours with Brandon Creek second and Ballydavid third.

Seven canoes competed in the second race which was won easily by Ballydavid, followed by another Ballydavid canoe in second place and Murreigh in third spot. In the sports events there were twelve competitors in the Long Jump competition which was won by J. Lynch of Brandon Creek.

Fifteen competitors entered for the High Jump, but none could match a young Fitzgerlad lad, also from Brandon Creek. Due to the lateness of the hour, it was decided that the Tug-of-War and other items on the programme should be postponed for another date.

No prior knowledge of art needed, just a willingness to take part in something creative & rooted in place which celebrates the rural beauty of Kerry through live painting.

Manx Shearwater Alert!

The BirdWatchIreland West Kerry Branch is appealing to everyone on the Dingle Peninsula these next few weeks to be on the lookout for stranded Manx Shearwater fledglings.

What are they?

They are pigeon-sized, web-footed black and white seabirds that breed on the Blasket Islands. During the next few weeks this year’s fledglings are making their first big migration to the waters off Brazil and Uruguay where they will spend the winter months.

Why are they stranding in our towns and villages?

They are attracted and disoriented by the strong electric lights with which we surround ourselves. Once they crash land on roads and in gardens they are rendered helpless as they cannot take off from flat surfaces (they either need steep slopes or be on the water) and are vulnerable to predation by cats and dogs.

What can you do if you find one?

Please pick it up carefully and place it securely in a cardboard box. Do not give it any food or water and ring one of the volunteers listed below who will collect it and release it safely back to the wild.

Four good reasons to get involved

1. Manx Shearwaters are long lived birds. The oldest ringed and recovered bird was 52 years old. By picking up and helping one bird you might help dozens of generations of shearwaters yet to come!

2. The shearwaters’ parents have travelled all the way from South America to the safe breeding colony on the Blasket Islands in order to lay one single egg which they incubate for up to 55 days after which they feed the fledgling for a further 60-70 days. That’s a big effort for this protected, amber-listed little bird. It seems a small effort on our part to pick it up and release it again safely to give it one more go at finding its way south.

3. Usually they are entirely uninjured and just need a little help to get airborne again.

4. We have very few opportunities to get up close and personal with some of our more elusive wildlife. Shearwater can generally only be observed high out to sea from a boat as they breed underground on our remoter islands and only come back to their breeding burrows at night. This is a great chance for everyone to find out a little bit more about the great biodiversity here on the Dingle peninsula and to help in a small but very effective way to protect it.

Last but not least let’s consider switching off some unnecessary outside lights to prevent these birds from crash landing in the first place!

Last year we collected and released more than 60 birds around the peninsula – thanks to all the people around the peninsula who picked them up and gave us a call. Some people even carried an empty cardboard box in their cars just in case they came across one of them. Thank you!

Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance

Congratulations to Castlegregory and Maharees, and so many groups around the peninsula as the finalists prepare for the announcements of The Irish Times “Ireland’s Greenest Places” which will be announced this Saturday. Best of luck to everyone involved and to the incredible work of all the volunteers across Corca Dhuibhne.

It’s interesting how widely Dingle Peninsula Festivals “travel” and how important Shannon Airport is to the Dingle Peninsula, Co. Kerry and west coast of Ireland. Heading out to Western Mass. on Sunday morning, we learned from chatting with airport security, that there had been a number of marathon runners who had participated in the Dingle Marathon last weekend. It reflects how important Shannon is for US East Coast visitors, who can visit the west coast for a long weekend, and be back at their desks on a Monday morning!

Next festival celebration to come is Camp Sheep Fair on September 21st. It’s great that another traditional event Fair is still such an important day out so get along to enjoy this firm annual favourite. Again, don’t forget the Dingle Food Festival is the first weekend of October this year so if you have a little time to give, please volunteer and help out if you can.

News:

THE SAM MAGUIRE AND ALL IRELAND WINNING KERRY TEAM REPRESENTATIVES WILL JOIN IRELAND’S DINGLE PENINSULA SHOWCASE AT THE BIG E OPENING WEEKEND CELEBRATING HALFWAY TO ST. PATRICK’S DAY

North America’s 4th largest fair, Massachusetts-based New England State Fair, The Big E runs Sept. 12-28

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass., and DINGLE PENINSULA, Co. Kerry, - Members of the Kerry football team and the prized Sam Maguire Trophy will be on hand Sept. 13-14 at The Big E’s Halfway to Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations in West Springfield. They will join some of the Dingle Peninsula’s famous crafters, artisans, distillers, jewellers and holiday itinerary planners marking 26 years participation at The Big E, North America’s fourth largest fair. Opening festivities begin Sept. 12 with a weekend-long “Halfway to Saint Patrick’s Day” celebration, sponsored by Aer Lingus.

“This represents a unique opportunity to view and perhaps get photos with the Sam Maguire in a rare stop in the United States, and we are honored to host members of this year’s championship club and the GAA’s prized trophy,” said Gene Cassidy, president and chairman of the Eastern States Exposition, known as The Big E, the only U.S. multi-state fair.

In addition to the onsite Dingle Peninsula businesses, the 2025 Big E, for the first time, will also showcase through video and other presentations more than 160 members of Dingle Peninsula Tourism businesses, 96 percent of which are family owned and operated.

Other opening weekend elements include Ireland’s Consul General for New England, Sighle FitzGerald hosting a “pop-up” Irish Consulate with her team in the Irish Pavilion on September 13th. Mayor of Kerry, Councillor Michael Foley, members of the Kerry County Council delegation, Dingle Peninsula Tourism and participating businesses, will participate in a business discussion with western Massachusetts tourism and economic development executives on the impact of the trans-Atlantic relationships. It will focus on the Dingle Peninsula and County Kerry as a primary destination for immersive tourism, business and investment to build on already strong partnerships and links between the Dingle Peninsula, County Kerry, the West Springfield region, and the State of Massachusetts.

“County Kerry has long-standing cultural and economic connections with the Greater Springfield area, rooted in the deep ties of our diaspora — particularly those from the Dingle Peninsula and the Blasket Islands who made Western Massachusetts their home,” said Foley. “These bonds have evolved into vibrant Sister City partnerships with West Springfield, Holyoke and Springfield. Attending The Big E is a valuable opportunity to strengthen and expand our trans-Atlantic partnerships.”

Oifigeach Óige i gCorca Dhuibhne

Táimid ana-shásta go bhfuil tús curtha leis an bpróiséas chun Oifigeach Óige a fhostú i gCorca Dhuibhne. Beidh an té a cheapfar lonnaithe i gCorca Dhuibhne agus fostaithe ag Foróige. We are very happy that the process to employ a youth office for Corca Dhuibhne has started. The successful candidate will be located in Corca Dhuibhne and employed by Foróige. A youth officer is badly needed in Corca Dhuibhne to ensure that the youth of the peninsula are catered for.

Teaċ Damsa’s 1975 | Naoi Déag Seachtó Cúig brings 1,000 people and €650,000 boost to West Kerry

D’fhreastail breis agus míle duine ar na léirithe agus imeachtaí in An Glaise Bheag - ceann de na bailiúcháin chultúrtha is mó i gCiarraí i mbliana.

Over 1,000 people attended 1975 | Naoi Déag Seachtó a Cúig and related events in An Glaise Bheag, where five extraordinary dancers transformed an old factory into a living, breathing performance space, set to the seminal album 1975, by the Bothy Band. The events at Teaċ Daṁsa generated an estimated €650,000 for the local economy, making it one of the biggest cultural gatherings in Kerry this year.

Guests included Minister Norma Foley TD, Councillor Breanndán Fitzgerald, musicians Martin Hayes, Cormac Begley, Eoin O’Neill, Liam Ó Maonlaí, and Bothy Band founding members Paddy Keenan and Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill.

Piper Paddy Keenan attended ahead of his own sold-out gig in the studio and was visibly emotional after Friday night’s performance. Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill joined choreographer Michael Keegan-Dolan and MC Philip King on stage, saying: “It was like I was back there… This show is like a love train.”

Local support from Mothú Corca Dhuibhne, Solas Tapas, Dingle Distillery, and Dingle Brewhouse added to the sense of meitheal. Audiences described the experience as “extraordinary,” “electric,” and “like the whole room was breathing together.”

Poet Dairena Ní Chinnéide captured how the dancers reclaimed the old Údarás factory: “The old factory hums… lit up now with new energy. There was always dancing in this parish - the ghosts of the dance converge with the modern.”

Next up, Teaċ Damsa brings the final Irish and UK performances of How to be a Dancer in Seventy-two Thousand Easy Lessons to:

Siamsa Tíre, Tralee, on 11 & 12 September. Tickets available at www. siamsatire.com

A key figure in St. Finbarrs’ success this season has been Rob Ó Sé, a native of Clochán Dubh, An Ghaeltacht, currently on a teaching career break from Gaelscoil Carraig Uí Leighin, Cork. Rob’s performances have been instrumental in leading the club to a historic double, having also won the Western Australia League Final just three weeks earlier.

Rob’s personal accolades this year include:

• Player of the Match in both the Championship and League Finals 2025

• Western Australia Player of the Year 2025

• Western Australia League Player of the Year 2025

It’s believed he may be the first Gaeltacht man to achieve such honours in Western Australia.

Rob’s football background:

• All-Ireland Minor winner with Kerry in 2014

• Played for Kerry U21s, narrowly losing to Galway, 2017

• All-Ireland Junior winner in 2017

• Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta 2019, 2017

• Cousin of Kerry legend Dr. Seán Murphy

His achievements have been a point of pride both for the Irish community in Australia and back home in Kerry, reflecting the strength and global reach of Gaelic Games.

Seift mhaith ag cumann peile Chiarraí é bratacha an chluib a chur ar fáil saor in aisce do shiopaí agus do ghnóluchtaí ar an mbaile chun go mbeidh fáilte chroíúil roimh lucht Ruagairí Shligigh a bheidh ag taisteal chun an Ríochta dá gcluiche Coirn an deireadh seachtaine beag seo. Beidh an fhoireann baile ag dul chun páirce lán de dhóchas tar éis na dtorthaí maithe le trí seachtainí anuas: bua ar Bhaile Longfoirt mar a thuairiscíomar san eagrán deireanach, agus ina dhiaidh sin torthaí fónta sa dá chluiche sraithe eile a imríodh ó shin.

Ní haon dóichín é pointe an ceann a thabhairt abhaile leat ó chluichí in aghaidh an dá cheannródaí sa Sraith. Níl ach péire cluichí caillte ag Dún Dealgan ó thús na bliana, agus ní bheadh an pobal ag tnúth le bua ag Ciarraí orthu, go háirithe agus an cluiche á imirt i bPáirc Oighialla. Ainneoin seansanna luatha ag an bhfoireann baile, b’iad na cuairteoirí a chuaigh chun cinn leath-bhealach tríd an chéad leath, nuair a thug Joe Adams an chaid do Ronan Teahan, agus rinne sé siúd a chuid féin den imirt as sin, a bhuille ag rásaíocht thar na cosantóirí isteach in eangach Enda Minogue.

Ba ghar don bhriseadh a d’éirigh le Daryl Horgan cic éirice a chur thar Matt Connor agus an scór a chothromú, ach ba ghaire fós don bhfead leathama a léim Robbie Cleary san aer leis an liathróid a shacadh lena cheann isteach i líontán na foirne baile. Bhí na cuairteoirí chun tosaigh ag dul isteach i dtreo an dara leath.

Ach chothromaigh Horgan arís agus macalla na feide fós sa timpeall, agus má dhein, ghlac Teahan seilbh na caide láithreach agus scóráil tar éis ruaig reatha. Mar bheadh díoltas air sin bhain Keith Ward an sprioc amach laistigh de chúpla nóiméad, agus bhí an cluiche cothrom arís. Trí chúl in imeacht cúig nóiméad - agus dachad nóiméad fós le n-imirt.

Bhí siar is aniar ann as sin amach, agus Dún Dealgan ag ionsaí chúil Chiarraí go háirithe sa chúig nóiméad d’am cúiteamh ghortaithe, ach d’éirigh le muintir Thrá Lí na cosa a thabhairt leo go deireadh.

Dá luachmhaire an pointe sin, bhí a chomh-dhúshlán rompu: tánaistigh na Sraithe, Fánaithe Chóbh, ar cuairt go Páirc Chnocán an Iolair.

Chaithfeá a cheapadh go mbeadh fonn díoltais ar na Corcaígh tar éis a dteip sa Chorn seachtainí gearra roimhe sin, ach ní raibh an imirt thar moladh beirte sa chéad leath, agus cé go raibh an dara thréimhse níos beoga, bhí uair a chloig nach mór caite sarar éirigh le Rhys Gourdie Chóbh an ceann is fearr a fháil ar Matt Connor. Deich nóiméad ina dhiaidh sin, ó chic cúinne le Sean O’Connell, d’éirigh Oran Crowe leis an chaid a sheoladh isteach in eangach Tim Martin, agus as san amach bhí sé ina choimhlint gan trócaire, cé nár éírigh le ceachtar taobh an cluiche a bhuachaint.

Ba mhór an gaisce é pointe an ceann a shaothrú in aghaidh an dá fhoireann atá - fós - ar cheann na Sraithe, agus tabharfaidh sé uchtach do mhuintir na Ríochta agus iad ag teannadh ar an gcluiche mór Coirn. Ócáid í seo a tharraingeodh slua mór, agus gan slí ag club Chiarraí lena ligint ar fad isteach. Ag smaoineamh ar sin, shamhlaíos go bhféadfaí ardán sealadach a chur isteach, ach ní dóigh liom go bhfuil aon áit sa Pháirc lena sheasamh.

Ardaíonn san ceisteanna achrannacha faoi thodhchaí na Páirce sin má éiríonn le Kerry FC áit a bhaint amach sa Phríomh-Shraith amach anseo. Smaineamh uaillmhianach, ach ní miste sin ó am go céile!

DINGLE MARATHON. Almost 3,000 people took part in the 2025 Full and Half Marathon held over the scenic Slea Head course on Saturday last. The organisers wish to express their sincere gratitude to the residents, motorists, business operators and road users for their wonderful co-operation before, during and after the event again this year. They also thank all the participants, stewards, supporters, Gardai, medical support teams and professional service operators all of whom ensured the 15th Dingle Marathon lived up to the high standards reached in the previous years.

TIDY TOWNS. Dingle Tidy Towns Committee were very disappointed at media announcements that the local Harbour was adjudged to be in the littered category following a survey of the area recently. It appears that the assessors went to the trouble of going to the lower rock armour areas where the wind does drive some light litter into open spaces from which it is quite difficult and dangerous to retrieve. Our committee wish to use the opportunity to commend the Harbour staff, also County Council staff, some local business outlets and our own

volunteers and community employment workers for their continuous efforts to keep our town as litter free as possible. Míle Buíochas agus leanaigí leis an obair tabhtach seo.

Solar Systems

Tom Kennedy

Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.

A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.

There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

TOWN PARK. Some of the adult exercise machines have been transferred from their original site in Gort a Lin/ An Cúl area to theTown Park. This addition certainly adds to the Town Park facility which is now well used since the opening of the Multi Sports Area last year. The entrance to the Park has also got a new stone faced wall fronted by new flower/shrub beds which add a more inviting entrance to what is one of the hidden gems of our town. Now no excuses for those interested in some physical exercise in a more private setting. The new house on Grey's Lane at the Park entrance really fits in nicely with the existing streetscape plan.

CULTURE NIGHT: Friday September 19th has been designated as Ireland's National Culture Night this year. A good number of different activities are planned throughout Corca Dhuibhne with full details on social media and elsewhere in this edition. As always we encourage our readers to come out and enjoy the activities in your locality.

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

suggestions on what type of offers, discounts, promotions, activities or entertainment to cater for all ages to include locals and visitors they would envisage to incorporate in this necessary initiative in one of the quieter periods of the year. BUSINESS. Dingle Business Chamber and the Peninsula Tourism Alliance are in the process of drawing up an Activity Plan for December 2025 and January 2026. They seek our readers

A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

U16s

West Kerry minors had a good run in county championship before finally exiting in an away Quarter Final to St Kierans at Scartaglen last Thursday evening. In their first group game they lost out by a point to St Brendans. In their second game they beat Austin Stacks by the same margin. Needing to win their final group game they produced a superb performance to easily defeat Laune Rangers and qualify from group. In the quarter final against Kierans they were slow to settle and were four points down early on, and were playing catch up from there until the end. They rallied strongly and fought hard to get back in game but eventually lost out on a scoreline of 2-15 t0 0-14.

West Kerry fielded two teams in District County Championship. The B team played in Shield competition and although they failed to qualify from their group, they did gain valuable experience at this level. The first team drew with Eoghan Rua in their final group game which left the same two teams meeting again in a play-off to decide on the team to go forward. This decider was played last Monday night in Tralee. In a high scoring hard fought game Eoghan Rua emerged as eventual winners on a scoreline of 4-20 to 5-13.

Intermediate Final.

The board congratulates An Ghaeltacht on reaching the Intermediate Championship Final and wishes them well in the final against Fossa next Sunday in Tralee.

Sábháilteacht, Suaimhneas agus

Inbhuanaitheacht - An Saol ar an gConair Chiúin!

Tugann Mol Teic an Daingin agus Fóram Pobail Chorca Dhuibne cuireadh duit do bhróga siúil nó do chlogad a chur ort agus dul ag siúl/rothaíocht ar Bhóthar Ard Cheann Trá, Dé Domhnaigh an 21ú Meán Fómhair.

Eagraíodh an ócáid spraíúil seo do theaghlaigh chun tús a chur le comhrá faoi 'Chonairí Ciúine' agus a dtionchar ar phobail tuaithe ar fud na hEorapa.

Is ionann 'Lána Ciúin' nó 'Conair Chiúin' agus bóthar tuaithe ar a bhfuil fíorbheagán tráchta - seachas muintir na háite i mbun gnónna agus obair feirme - agus atá sábháilte do shiúlóirí agus rothaithe.

Bíonn na bóithre seo cúng de ghnáth le fógraí a chuireann i gcuimhne do thiománaithe a bheith aireach ar na húsáideoirí eile.

'Sé ár sprioc ná taisteal gníomhach a spreagadh, daoine soghonta a chosaint agus suaimhneas na tuaithe a chaomhnú.

Tá Mol Teic an Daingin bainteach le Tionscadal Náisíúnta 'Pathfinder' chun cúnamh a thabhairt do dhaoine fén dtuath taisteal gan carr.

Mhínigh Bainisteoir Mhol Teic, Deirdre de Bhailís: "Táimid ag lorg slite taistil eile, siúl, rothaíocht nó córas iompair eile a dhéanfadh maitheas don bplainéad. Ach, tá fadhb ann: tá roinnt bóithre nach mbraitheann siúlóirí ná rothaithe sábháilte orthu. Mar sin, táimid ag smaoineamh ar thriail a bhaint as sheift ar a nglaotar 'Conairí Ciúine'. Bóithre beaga ciúine iad seo ar a dtiomáintear carranna go mall agus gur féidir le daoine siúl nó rothaíocht go sábháilte. Tá sé i gceist againn an smaoineamh seo a thástáil i dhá áit - An Bóthar Ard Cheann Trá - atá mar chuid de Shlí Chorca Dhuibhne agus Dún Chaoin. Má éiríonn go maith leis sna háiteanna sin, cabhróimid leis na bailte agus leis na sráidbhailte mórthimpeall a gConairí Ciúine féin a chruthú," a dúirt sí.

Tá tacaíocht Fhóram Pobail an Daingin ag an dtionscadal seo, grúpa deonach na leithinse a oibríonn ar son inbhuanaitheacht na timpeallachta, athrú aeráide agus folláine na ndaoine.

Dúirt Cathaoirleach an Fhóraim an Dr. Peadar Ó Fionnáin go rabhadar ag iarraidh bóithre a chruthú a bheadh taitneamhach do gach éinne.

"Ní fhreastalaíonn bóithre dainséaracha ar bhunriachtanais an duine, aclaíocht, taiscéalaíocht ná bualadh leis na comharsain,” a dúirt sé.

“Cabhróidh an coincheap 'Conairí Ciúine' linn tuiscint a bheith againn ar riachtanais mhuintir na háite agus an pobal i gcoitinne chomh maith le húsáid níos mó a bhaint as ár gcosa agus úsáid níos lú a bhaint as ár gcarranna i slí a rachaidh chun tairbhe do gach éinne," a dúirt sé.

Tósnaíonn an tsiúlóid/rothaíocht ag Crosaire an Léidí ag a 2:15i.n. agus leantar an Bóthar Ard (L8039) go dtí Ceann Trá.

Sólaistí ina dhiaidh i dTigh Tábhairne Uí Chuinn.

Tá an ócáid saor in aisce ach áit a chur in áirithe ar https://forms.office.com/e/ ss0yZU3ZtX.

The ‘Quiet Lane’

Dingle Hub and Corca Dhuibhne Community Forum invite you to put on your walking shoes or saddle up for a community walk/cycle of the Ventry High Road on Sunday, September 21st.

This fun, family-friendly event is designed to start a conversation about ‘Quiet Lanes’ and how they are transforming rural communities all over Europe.

A‘Quiet Lane’ or a ‘Quiet Road’ is a designated rural road with already low traffic volumes that is used by local residents and for agricultural activity but is also protected for pedestrians and cyclists.

These roads are usually narrow and feature signage to remind drivers of other road users.

The goal is to encourage active travel, enhance safety for vulnerable road users, and preserve the tranquil character of the countryside. Dingle Hub is part of a National Pathfinder Project to help people in the countryside get around without using their cars.

Manager of Dingle Hub, Deirdre de Bhailís, explained: "We want to find better ways to walk, cycle, or use other transport that’s good for the planet. But there’s a problem: some roads don’t feel safe for walking or cycling. So, we’re thinking about trying something called 'Quiet Lanes’. These are small, peaceful roads where cars go slowly and people can walk or cycle safely. We want to test this idea in two places - the High Road in Ceann Trá - which is already part of the Dingle Way - and Dún Chaoin. If it works well there, we hope to help other towns and villages nearby create their own Quiet Lanes too,” Deirdre added.

The project is backed by Corca Dhuibhne Community Forum, a peninsula-wide voluntary group that works in the areas of environmental sustainability, climate change and community wellbeing. Forum chair, Dr Peadar Ó Fionnáin, said they wanted to create roads that are friendly to all road users.

“Basic needs of exercise, meeting neighbours, and exploring our surroundings are not met by fast and dangerous roads,” Peadar said. “With the Quiet Roads concept, we think we have good ideas to balance the needs of local residents and the wider community to use our legs more, and our cars less, in a way that benefits everyone,” he said.

The walk/cycle leaves Lady’s Cross at 2.15pm (Local Link bus leaving Dingle at 2pm), continuing along the Ventry High Road (L8039) to Ventry Village.

Refreshments and treats afterwards at Quinn’s Pub.

OBITUARY

Jackie Murphy of Gleannagalt, Camp, passed away peacefully on 3rd September surrounded by his loving family.

Jackie, predeceased by his parents James and Mary, will be sadly missed by his sisters Eileen and Kitty, Aunt Kathleen, Uncle Tom, brother-in-law Martin Gaynor, nephews and niece Michael, Louise, James and Kevin, relatives, neighbours and friends.

Jackie was a sheepfarmer, all his life. He was very happy and content tending to his flock and conducting his business at the local Marts, usually Milltown on a Tuesday, where he made many friends.

Secretary of Camp Irish Farmers Association and Delegate to the Kerry Co. Executive Jackie travelled to meetings with fellow IFA Executive colleagues, Tom and Brigid. He enjoyed engaging with other farmers and keeping up to date with developments in farming.

On Saturday morning Jackie was brought on his final journey home when Sean Lynch, Hogans Funeral Home led the cortege into the glen and up the road to the house where he was born and happily lived his entire lifeA huge guard of honour awaited to bid a fond farewell to their kind, caring and helpful neighbour who will be greatly missed in the Glen. Ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís.

Finally I will end this tribute, with the beautiful sentiments taken from Jackies published obituary, the lyrics from a Gospel Song.

So I made my reservation for my final destination

I am changing my location for my mansion in the sky.

Rest In Eternal Peace, Jackie.

TV STAR

Our popular local entertainer Ferghal Crean was joined by a member of The 2 Johnnies TV Comedy duo in The Junction Bar for a few songs last Friday. Backing the duet was well known Aughacasla musician Gerhard Mulligan. Congratulations Ferghal ! Watch out, Camp could be on TV soon.

Ceiliúradh Céad Bliain ar Thadhg Ó Conchubhair na Gráige (Cuid 11)

Roibeard Ó Cathasaigh

Thughas an chéad bhlaiseadh san eagrán deiridh de Ch. Dh. Beo dár gceiliúradh céad bliain ar oidhreacht bhéil ár nduine muinteartha, Tadhg Ó Conchubhair (1840-1925) D’éirigh ábhar an ailt úd as ceiliúradh na hAoine d’Fhéile Lios Póil, mar leanas, mo léiriú ar an gcúlra stairiúil teanga as ar eascair Tadhg de réir scagadh Garreth Fitzgerald ar dhaonáireamh 1911 (Bunaithe ar staitisticí an daonáirimh úd, dhearbhaigh Fitzgerald go mba Ghaeilgeoirí 97/98% de ghlúin chomhaoisigh Thaidhg). Ina theannta sin, fuair ár léitheoirí blaiseadh de chaint Eibhlín Ní Chonchubhair, Uí Chuanacháin mar ar rianaigh sí sliocht sleachta Thaidhg i leithinis Chorca Dhuibhne.

Airneán i dTigh an Bháid

Chuamar beagán níos doimhne in oidhreacht Thaidhg Uí Chonchubhair ar Luan na Féile ag airneán i dTigh a’ Bháid le Galway Johnson cois cé na Min Airde. Bhí an tigh lán go doras le breis is deichniúr ar fhichead i láthair don ócáid. Bhíomar suite go cluthair sa chistin agus radharc draíochtúil tré fhuinneog mhór na cistine ar Bhá an Daingin againn, agus dathanna draíochtúla na spéire ag síor-athrú lena linn. Ar an gcéad aoi-chainteoir bhí Bosco Ó Conchúir, aisteoir, drámadóir, agus léiritheoir le fada an lá le hAisteoirí Bhréanainn – an compántas a choinnigh éigse Thaidhg Uí Chonchubhair beo lenár linn féin.

Na haisteoirí sa dráma ‘An Dá Dhrúncaer’, cois tí na Gráige inar chónaigh Tadhg Ó Conchubhair, mar leanas, ó chlé: Áine Mhic Gearailt/ Sinéad, bean Shéamuis Raol; Colm Ó Bric/Seán Ó Sé, meisceoir; Frances Ní Chinnéide/Máiréad, comharsa; Páidí Mhártain Mac Gearailt/Séamus Raol, fear síbín; Ann Marie Uí Dhubhda/Léan, bean phósta Sheáin Uí Shé; Bosco Ó Conchúír/An tAthair Paor, sagart paróiste.

Seo mar a labhair Bosco:

A chairde, Chuireas aithne ar shaothar Thaidhg Uí Chonchúir (1840-1925) nuair a thosnaíos ag obair i gCeardscoil an Daingin i 1970. An uair sin, bhíodh comórtais á n-eagrú ag Gael Linn ar a nglaotaí Slogadh. Bhí fonn ar dhaltaí na scoile a bheith páirteach sna comórtais san. Duine díobh san dob ea Séamus Ó Conchúir ó Chill Chuáin. Dob é Tadhg Ó Conchúir a sheanathair críonna. Ní bheadh aon rud níos deise ná Séamus a chur ag aithris dánta/amhráin lena sheanathair críonna. Siúd linn ag cuardach dánta oiriúnacha i leabhar Thaidhg, Reacaireacht Ghrinn na Tuaithe (1925) Is ann a bhíodar. Orthu san bhí Pósadh dob fhearr liom ná Bacfainn é, Nuair a Phósfa siad Dan is a thuilleadh. Bhuaigh Séamus Gradaim Náisiúnta leis na h-aithriseoireachtaí san.

Timpeall an ama chéanna, bunaíodh Aisteoirí Bhréanainn agus bhí duine sa chompántas go raibh spéis ar leith aige in Agallaimh Beirte. ‘B’é sin Johnny Neoiní Ó Cathalláin. Siúd linn ag cuardach i leabhar Thaidhg arís agus is ann a bhí na hagallaimh a bhí rithimiúil seoidh – leithéidí Cáit a’ Chalaithe is a Fear, Cleamhnas Sheáinín Léith, agus An Peata is a Mháthair. Bhí Johnny sásta.

Níos déanaí fós, nuair a bhí an Fhéile Náisiúnta Drámaíochta ar siúl i Halla na Feothanaí i 2004, bhí fonn ar an gCoiste Eagraithe aitheantas a thabhair do laoch liteartha éigin ón gceantar. Roghnaíodh Tadhg Ó Conchubhair ó Ghráig, Lios Póil, mar go raibh an cumann ana-bhuíoch dó thar na mblianta, agus ceapadh go raibh breis aitheantais tuillte aige. An babhta seo roghnaíodh dráma fileata le Tadhg le cur os comhair an

phobail – An Dá Dhrúncaer. Sa dráma fileata seo bhí 81 véarsa ann agus iad roinnte ar sé (6) aisteoir. Bhain an lucht féachana ana-shásamh as an taispeántas. Dá bharr san, an bhliain dár gcionn, chuireamair dhá dhráma fileata eile le Tadhg ar stáitse: Caismirt na gCearc (ina raibh deichniúr (10) páirteach agus 85 véarsa ann) agus Cleamhnas an Bhacaigh (39 véarsa agus cheithre (4) aisteoir).

Seod is ea leabhar Thaidhg, Reacaireacht Ghrinn na Tuaithe, Bhí an t-ábhar go léir istigh ina chloigeann. Mar shampla, iontas dom go bhféadfadh Tadhg 85 véarsa a aithris de ghlanmheabhair, agus ní hamháin san, ach na línte a roinnt, ina chloigeann, ar dheichniúr aisteoir. Fear eisceachtúil. Is maith agus is cuí go ndéanfadh a mhuintir fhéin comóradh agus ceiliúradh ar a oidhreacht eisceachtúil le linn Féile Lios Póíl na bliana seo, céad bliain ó chuaigh sé ar shlí na fírinne. Gura maith agaibh as cluas le héisteacht a thabhairt dom. Cuimhní na muintire ar Thadhg Dob é an t-Ath. Pádraig Ó Fiannachta a chéadspreag mé féin i dtreo Thaidhg Uí Chonchubhair, nuair a d’iarr orm caint a thabhairt ar a oidhreacht do chomhdháil bhliantúil Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne, cúig bliana déag ar fhichead ó shin, i bhfómhar na bliana 1990, rud a dheineas, agus atá i gcló in Ár bhFilí, Iris na hOidhreachta 3 (1991).

Bhí an t-ádh liom an spreagadh chuige d’fháil ag an tréimhse chinniúnach úd, mar gur mhair cuimhní glé ar Thadhg in aigne sheanóirí ár muintire ar m’aithne ag an am, mar is léir óna n-agallaimh liom, Lúnasa 1990, mar leanas: i) Micil Ó Briain (86):‘Bhí sé ina fháidh ar fad le hamhráin… bhí seanaithne agam air. Nuair a bímis ag dul ’on aifreann théadh sé féin agus cúigear eile, seandaoine ón bparóiste, roimh aifreann, théidís suas go dtí an ráil is deiridís an choróin as Gaelainn… ii) Connie Ó Súilleabháin (80) Min Aird Bhuí, an té go raibh agallaimh Thaidhg de ghlanmheabhair ó thús go deireadh aige, ina measc ‘Traolach is Mairéad’, agus ‘An Peata is a Mháthair’ – lán trí leathanach déag den leabhar!: ‘Scoiltfeadh sé cloch leis an nguth a bhí aige… Fear beag le hata cruaidh, seanchaí gan dabht ab ea é’, iii) Lís Ní Shúilleabháin (67), deirfiúr Chonnie: ‘ Bhí meas ar an rannaireacht agus ar an bhfilíocht … Bhí meas ag daoine ar dhaoine a bhí intleachtúil… duine acu san ab ea Tadhg Ó Conchubhair.’

Drámaí Thaidhg

Luaigh Bosco Ó Conchúir drámaí Thaidhg Uí Chonchubhair a bheith á gcur ‘os comhair an phobail’ ag Aisteoirí Bhréanainn sa bhliain 2004. Bhuel, i lár Samhna na bliana dár gcionn, 2005, léirigh an compántas céanna na trí dhráma úd as stór Thaidhg le linn tráthnóna draíochtúil drámaíochta san Ionad Pobail i Lios Póil, leathmhíle suas an bóthar ó thigh Thaidhg ar an nGráig. Níl aon amhras ná gurbh é seo an tionól ba mhó agus ba thábhachtaí i gceiliúradh ár n-oidhreachta a bhí riamh againn i Halla John L., a bhí lán go doras don ócáid. Ní gan dua a deineadh an gníomh éachtach úd, a mhairfidh go buan inár gcuimhne – trí dhráma á léiriú in aon tráthnóna amháin – a cruthaíodh, i) le barr dóchais inár n-éigse, ii) mar thaca tréan le pobal na Gaelainne i Lios Póil, iii) agus mar cheiliúradh ar cheithre scór bliain ar bhás Thaidhg. Gura fada buan Aisteoirí Bhréanainn!

Seán Ó Morónaigh (1942-23)

B’é Seán Ó Morónaigh a léirigh na drámaí úd. Duine ar leith ab ea Seán, an té a chuir comaoin ollmhór ar na healaíona dúchasacha béil lena shaothrú saoil sa drámaíocht. A bhuíochas do Sheán go bhfuil éigse Thaidhg ar fáil againn sa bhfoilseachán snasta comhaimseartha Drámaíocht ó Dhúchas, ó bhéalaithris Thaidhg Uí Chonchubhair (2005). Tá réamhrá luachmhar scolártha sa leabhar ina ndeineann an t-eagarthóir, i) rianadh ar bhailiú agus ar fhoilsiú stór Thaidhg sa bhfoilseachán Muimhneach An Lóchrann, de réir a chéile idir na blianta 1909 agus 1920, a bhformhór a bhuíochas don mbailitheoir béaloidis ‘Finín na Leamhna’/Fionán Mac Coilm, ii) tuairisc bheathaisnéiseach ar shaol Thaidhg Uí Chonchubhair, iii) léiriú ar thraidisiún na filíochta as ar múnlaíodh stór Thaidhg. Suaimhneas síoraí d’anam cruthaitheach Gaelach Sheáin!

Siobhán Ní Ghrífín: Grianghraf, RÓC.

B’í Siobhán Ní Ghrífín a chuir clabhsúr ceolmhar leis an airneán i dTigh Galway le casadh an amhráin ‘Bímse i gCónaí ’Radaireacht’ as stór Thaidhg. (Gheofar an mhír dheiridh dár gceiliúradh ar oidhreacht Thaidhg Uí Chonchubhair sa chéad eagrán eile de Chorca Dhuibhne Beo).

Breaded Plaice with Homemade Tartar Sauce

Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School

The simple things done well.

It is hard to beat some fresh fish covered in breadcrumbs and served with a homemade tartar sauce. Making your own sauce seems so fancy now but we probably only have to go back a generation when everything was made from scratch. A tartar sauce is simply a mayonnaise with cornichons, capers, shallot and herbs. Once you master a mayonnaise the options are endless (for a delicious garlic mayonnaise add some roast garlic).

This is an easy dish to make, but there is a little skill in getting the fish cooked perfectly. You want the crumb with a golden colour and the fish just cooked perfectly inside. To achieve this, slow everything down. Don’t be in a panic to get it on the table, give yourself even a few extra minutes and I promise it will turn out fine. The trick is to cook it in a pan over a medium heat, if you think the breadcrumb is browning too much, turn the heat down a little.

Serves 4

Ingredients for the fish

100g flour

160g breadcrumbs

3 eggs, beaten

12 fillets of plaice

salt and pepper

olive oil/ rapeseed oil

for the tartare

2 egg yolks

1tsp. Dijon mustard

200ml sunflower oil

½ lemon juiced

4-5 cornichons, diced

2 tbsp. capers, diced

1 shallot, finely diced

small bunch of flat leaf parsley, chopped finely small bunch of tarragon leaves, chopped finely salt and pepper

Method for the sauce

Place a damp cloth on a work surface and put a large bowl on top of it. Add the egg yolks and mustard to the bowl, whisk well, start drizzling the oil slowly into the bowl as you whisk. Keep the flow of oil very slow while you whisk, you should see it coming together as you whisk. Keep

doing this until the oil is gone, the consistency should look like mayonnaise. Add the lemon juice. Use a spoon to mix in the cornichons, capers, shallot and herbs. Mix this all together, taste and adjust the seasoning.

for the fish

Put the flour, eggs and breadcrumbs in three separate trays. Add salt and pepper to the flour and mix in well. Dip each piece of fish into the flour, then egg and then the breadcrumbs (you will need to use both hands for this). Repeat this with the rest of the fish.

Put a pan on over medium heat, once hot add a little oil. Carefully add the fish to the pan. If there is too much fish for your pan, you may need two pans (if you don’t have two pans you can brown them in the pan and then finish them in an oven 180º for 6 minutes depending on the size). Turn them over once they have lightly browned on one side. Cook for a further 2-3 minutes. Turn off the pan and add a little lemon juice.

Serve with some tartar sauce on the side.

Naomh Carlo Acutis

(Tionchaire Dé - God’s Influencer)

An Domhnach seo caite, 7ú Meán Fómhair , i searmanas sa Roimh, d’ainmnigh An Pápa Leon X1V Carlo Acutis (3 Bealtaine 1991 - 12 Deireadh Fomhar 2006) mar naomh . Chum Easpag Assisi an phaidir speisialta seo i gcuimne ar Charlo.

A Charlo, a aoibh na bhflaitheas

Thar ceann an domhain seo créachtach ceal suaimhnis Molaimid Dia as do shaol simplí, suairc, suáilceach. De do dheoin féin ghlac tú le hiontaoibh le trá d’óige gur i gcomhpháirt le hÍosa agus Muire a ghlacfá ar neamh le misean de ghrá gan teora le do chorp saolta a luíonn mar ar fholmhaigh Proinsias d’Assisi é féin ón uile ní talmhaí, Scairteann tú d’aonghuth leis don domhan gurb é Íosa barr lúchaire dúinn uile.

A Charlo, lán de thaibhrithe, ba gheal le do chroí an dúlra, an spórt agus an t-idirlíon

Ach ba ghile fós leat míorúilt Íosa i láthair go fíor sa Naomhabhlann, cabhraigh linn a chreidiúint gur ann é ina bheatha agus ina fhírinne

An bóthar mór mistiúil go Flaithis Dé Agus múin dúinn conas meabhrú air in éineacht le Muire i rúndiamhra na Corónach Naofa

Mínigh dúinn gurb é Íosa ina chomhaontas linn, thar gach nuaíocht eile, a dheineann cruthú as an nua nach macasamhail dínn, saor go fíor.

Taispeáin dúinn conas aithne a chur air i ngach neach beo

Go mórmhór sa mbocht gur móide a bheidh an chóir agus an cairdeas ag an gcine daonna

Le háilleacht agus dóchas acu in iomadúlacht

Chun glóire an Athar, an Mhic agus an Spioraid Naoimh.

Working From Home?

Expand your social circle in Corca Dhuibhne

Grow Remote is an Irish social enterprise whose mission is to make good quality jobs available to everyone, wherever they live - especially applicable to us in Corca Dhuibhne. The organisation helps workers find and thrive in remote jobs while also advocating on behalf of this sector. With more people working and wanting to work this way, there is an increasingly positive impact on rural societies. Jobs boards and more information on www.growremote.ie.

Potential downsides of working remotely include isolation, without colleagues next to you to share the load. To combat this, Grow Remote creates regular opportunities for remote workers to socialise and connect with each other. Towns across Ireland have local chapters with volunteer leaders setting up social events to enable locals meet-up. Aodán Ó Conaill & Liz Ryan are the Dingle Chapter leads, which is one of Ireland’s largest with circa 120 members, growing steadily every month. Other parts of Kerry have chapters too - remote workers can attend any chapter’s events. The Dingle chapter tries to do something different each month, taking advantage of the brilliant resources here. 2025 highlights: beginners yoga, making St Bridget’s crosses at Púca café, cheering on the Six Nations Rugby in Paddy Bawn’s, Craic in Neligan’s with Irish set dancing, making pendants with Celtic Coastal Creations and a killer-pool evening in Dingle Bridge House! We love working with local organisations and businesses - especially newer and small ones & we welcome collaboration ideas, especially in the outdoor pursuits area. Also open to considering volunteer efforts locally.

If you (or someone you know) is working without the perks of a traditional workplace, or if there’s someone who is curious if remote work is for them, encourage them to come along to our next event. (Hybrid workers also welcome.) It’s informal and friendly with new faces at each gathering. Yes, it’s hard to start something new and if you’re slow to join us, know that you will be welcomed in and handled with care.

We have a Whatsapp group for the Dingle network which is the best way to connect and hear first about events. To join: scan the QR code with your camera. To see our upcoming events, search www.eventbrite.ie for ‘Grow Remote’ in ‘Dingle’.

It's All In The Mind

Gratitude

Orla Smyth

There is a complex relationship between our thoughts, moods, brain chemistry and the body. Our thoughts actually trigger physiological changes in the body and this can impact our overall wellbeing. Scientific research consistently shows that behaviour changes biology. Throughout history scientists and scholars have studied the effects of gratitude and more recently the scientifically-validated benefits of gratitude are better unferstood. The improvements to health to name a few include stress reduction, reduced inflammation, increased optimism. Simply stated, feeling thankful releases the hormone oxytocin and makes you feel better. So, for example, if you’re stuck in a rut, gratitude may help you get more out of life and navigate difficult challenges. Taking the time each day to intentionally notice what we are grateful for, can actually have a beneficial effect on our physical and mental health. In line with the science, Gratitude is one of the core Attitudes of Mindfulness, attributed by Jon Kabat Zinn .

There are many ways to cultivate a gratitude practice : keeping a gratitude journal ; thinking of 3 things to be grateful for each day; pausing to feel thankful for what is present now in this moment - all of these will lead to a more positive mindset. But gratitude can be a slippery concept and I find it’s not always possible to feel grateful. Sometimes, when things fall apart and emotions and thoughts are raging through the body, you feel like giving gratitude a kick in the backside!

Sometimes, there may be an implicit sense of beholdeness, an unspoken debt of gratitude rather than a validation of wholeness and belonging. Sometimes, by forcing the issue it can backfire, and insteading of softening our attitude it can harden into resentment and aversion.

In short, there are circumstances when the expression of gratitude can weigh us down rather than buoy us up- it’s all a question of perspective. So let's turn it on its head- rather than feeling grateful per say, we just notice and acknowledge a certain quality :attune the body and mind to any feeling tone that is vaguely pleasant or at least not unpleasant.. By simply directing our attention to becoming aware of a mild positive rather than a negative, we are better able to appreciate its presence. Awareness of what is present subtly morphs into a kind of receptivity of the body. In the midst of the storm, it allows you to open up to the wider possibilities of life instead of shutting down.

We tend to overcomplicate our approach to gratitude ( or receptivity). Wonder is really to be found in the small things. It’s easy to be receptive to winning the lottery or getting your dream job but big ticket items are rare and may never happen. A deeper and more lasting joy is found in the ordinary everyday. Thich Nhat Hanh, recognised as the ‘father of Mindfulness’ has a helpful approach. He says : notice your eyes - they allow you to read a book, see a baby’s smile, observe the sun set : take in the fresh air around you - it breathes life into the body : take in your two legs - they enable you to walk and run and dance: notice the sensation of a warm blanket in the morning or a drink of water when you are thirsty. The following quote puts it nicely.

“When we’re having a toothache, we know that not having a toothache

is a wonderful thing.Yet when we don’t have a toothache, we’re still not happy. A non-toothache is very pleasant” Thich Nhat Hanh

Mindfulness and meditation give us the keys to moment to moment awareness so that we notice and embrace the little wonders in life. Appreciating the little things gives us the strength and courage to better cope with the big challenges life throws at us..

Everyone has a book in them

We can all speak volumes

Turn over a new leaf

With inky fingers

Scratch out our lives

In a spidery hand

But is it fact or fiction?

Is it only cut and paste?

Did you borrow a chapter

From someone else’s story?

It’s time to

Come in from the margins

Climb out of the gutter

Exorcise the ghost writer

From that haunted typewriter

If there’s something you need to say

Let the words fall where they may

Land Is All That Matters le Myles Dungan foilsithe i Sasana ag Head of Zeus (Bloomsbury)

In this epic narrative, Myles Dungan examines two hundred years of agrarian conflict from the ruinous famine of 1741 to the eve of World War Two. It explores the pivotal moments that shaped Irish history: the rise of `moonlighting', the infamous Whiteboys and Rightboys, the insurrection of Captain Rock, the Tithe War of 1831 - 1836, the Great Famine of 1845 that devastated the country and drastically reduced the Irish population, and the Land War of 1878 - 1909, which ended by transferring almost all the landlords' holdings to their tenants. These events take place against the backdrop of prevailing British `rule' and stark class and wealth inequality.

Land Is All that Matters tells the sweeping story of the agrarian revolution that fundamentally shaped modern Ireland - Bloomsbury

Rugar

Ar an Satharn seo caite bhíos ag féachaint ar feadh tamaill bhig ar an Astráil agus Sasana i gcluiche rugair ban. Dhein na Sasanaigh filí chaocha do mhná na hAstráile. Chonac deich neomat do chluiche sacair, idir Albain agus an Ollóin a bhí go hainnis. Rugair ban na hÉireann in aghaidh na Saolainne Nua. Cad é ach dhein na Saolannaigh gabhair dóibh. Na créatúirí. Sacar.

Bhí cliuiche cruaidh idirnáisiunta ann idir Éirinn agus an Ungáir ar an Satharn seo caite. Bhí gach aon mhí-ádh ortha ar feadh tamaill mhaith. Bhí an Ungáir chun cinn le dhá bháide sa chéad leath agus iad go diail ach sa dara leath tháinigh an-fheabhas ar na hÉireannaigh, fuaireadar báide agus chonac an ceathrú deireannach mar a bhfuair Idah an- bhaide neomat ó dheire ama. Bhíodar go diail.

Caid

Cad é ach bhuaidh an Ghaeltacht ar an Léigiún ar an nDomhnach seo caite, ard fhearaibh. Go deimhin dheineadar gaisce. Arís bhí an bheirt Bheaglaoí tofa, Ó Conchúir ar fheabhas, Hand, iad ar fad... Tá siad anois i gCraobhchluiche Idirmheánach an Chontae ar an nDomhnach. Beidh an bheirt deartháir ó Clúmhain ó Fhossa ina gcoinne ar an nDomhnach beag seo.

Guímíd gach ádh ar na gaiscígh seo againne.

Feirm Marglann

Níl praghas na mbeithioch-ba agus caoire agus uain ag déanamh ró olc. Tá titim beag tagtha ar na beithígh deir na húdair ach fanann na huain go maith.

Bhíos ag caint le fear ón Leithinis a dhiol chúig bhullán maith le déanaí. Chuadar €2,500 an ceann. Chuir sé saghas iontais orm ach caithfear a admháil go bhfuil stoc maith i scata áiteanna ag dul €2,500+, dúirt sé, agus rud a chonac ar nuachtáin. ‘Tá sé in am agam praghas maith a fháil rud atá le feiscint i scata marglann fé láthair’ ar sé. Tháinig Saintí luath chughat a dúirt ach tá sé tuillte agat’. Fear sásta. Dúirt fear eile liom go gcaithfeadh feirmeoirí caorach reathaí cáilithe [ard phór aitheanta] bheith acu i mbliana. Deirtear go bhfuil na reathaí seo, €400 an ceann ar a laghad.

Rás

Bhí na céadta ar an mbóthar ar an Satharn seo caite agus iad ar a ndícheall gradam a bhaint i Marathon an Daingin. Bhí a bhfurmhór réidh dó ainneoin an anaithe, gaoth isteach sa phus tamall agus ansan sa drom. Caithfidh go mbaineadar sásamh as.

Ní raibh na buaiteoirí idir fhir agus mhná cáinteach ach go mbaineadar an-shásamh as an ócáid. Ba dhiail iad. Ní raibh aon bheann acu ar an anaithe.
