Manx Shearwater Alert!

The BirdWatchIreland West Kerry Branch is appealing to everyone on the Dingle Peninsula these next few weeks to be on the lookout for stranded Manx Shearwater fledglings.

What are they?

They are pigeon-sized, web-footed black and white seabirds that breed on the Blasket Islands. During the next few weeks this year’s fledglings are making their first big migration to the waters off Brazil and Uruguay where they will spend the winter months.

Why are they stranding in our towns and villages?

They are attracted and disoriented by the strong electric lights with which we surround ourselves. Once they crash land on roads and in gardens they are rendered helpless as they cannot take off from flat surfaces (they either need steep slopes or be on the water) and are vulnerable to predation by cats and dogs.

What can you do if you find one?

Please pick it up carefully and place it securely in a cardboard box. Do not give it any food or water and ring one of the volunteers listed below who will collect it and release it safely back to the wild.

Four good reasons to get involved

1. Manx Shearwaters are long lived birds. The oldest ringed and recovered bird was 52 years old. By picking up and helping one bird you might help dozens of generations of shearwaters yet to come!

2. The shearwaters’ parents have travelled all the way from South America to the safe breeding colony on the Blasket Islands in order to lay one single egg which they incubate for up to 55 days after which they feed the fledgling for a further 60-70 days. That’s a big effort for this protected, amber-listed little bird. It seems a small effort on our part to pick it up and release it again safely to give it one more go at finding its way south.

3. Usually they are entirely uninjured and just need a little help to get airborne again.

4. We have very few opportunities to get up close and personal with some of our more elusive wildlife. Shearwater can generally only be observed high out to sea from a boat as they breed underground on our remoter islands and only come back to their breeding burrows at night. This is a great chance for everyone to find out a little bit more about the great biodiversity here on the Dingle peninsula and to help in a small but very effective way to protect it.

Last but not least let’s consider switching off some unnecessary outside lights to prevent these birds from crash landing in the first place!

Last year we collected and released more than 60 birds around the peninsula – thanks to all the people around the peninsula who picked them up and gave us a call. Some people even carried an empty cardboard box in their cars just in case they came across one of them. Thank you!

Berry, Berry Good Reasons To Eat Our Native Superfood!

When it comes to Superfoods we can be quick to fork out big bucks for some exotic plant from far, far away that promises to be the elixir of life. The stuff growing around us since the year dot is often overlooked in favour of the new kid in town! There is no official or legal definition for "Superfoods" but it has become a bit of a buzz word in the area of food and health. Under EU legislation the use of "Superfood" in food labelling is not allowed unless it is accompanied by an authorized health claim that explains to the consumer why the product is good for their health. Despite this, the term is still flaunted, making some foods super attractive for those seeking super health. Goji berries, moringa, acai berries, matcha tea are some of the newly crowned Superfoods but we do not have to travel so far to find a food that is truly super and growing in our own backyards. Blackberries have been with us for over 2000 years providing us with a source of food and medicine with its briars protecting us from would-be marauders. Although their thorns may not have been enough to keep out the pillagers, their nutritional profile packs an impressive punch that ranks them among some of the most super of foods in the world. Along with other dark-skinned fruits such as blueberries, plums and cherries –blackberries contain exceptional amounts of anthocyanins – a group of antioxidants particularly beneficial for arthritic conditions. Pure cherry juice is now a popular and effective remedy for gout but back in the 18th century blackberries were also referred to as goutberries such was the high regard in which they were held among the inflamed aristocrats across Europe. What we know now is that anthocyanins are powerful anti-inflammatories that can dissolve uric acid crystals which build up inside the body, causing the gout symptoms of pain and inflammation. While cherries seem to have hogged the limelight, blackberries have a higher concentration of anthocyanins and can offer some seasonal relief for this common ailment.

The timing of the blackberry season reflects Nature’s way of giving us what we need when we need it. Anthocyanins and other antioxidants found in blackberries are noted for protection against the harmful effects of UV sunlight. Lutein and Zeaxanthin have long been proven to protect our delicate eyes from macular degeneration and damage caused by sun rays and other sources of UV radiation. Blueberries are a well-known source of lutein and zeaxanthin but our native blackberries do the job just as well. All antioxidants found in Nature offer a wide range of anticancer and anti-aging properties, primarily by their ability to protect and repair our DNA from the daily onslaught of free radical damage – which is involved in the onset and progression of cancer, aging, inflammation and neurological diseases.

Tannins in blackberries help reduce intestinal inflammation, alleviate haemorrhoids and soothe the effects of diarrhoea. The gut also benefits from its fibre content of 8g per cup which amounts to more fibre than a cup of bran flakes. Unlike bran, the fibre in blackberries helps lower cholesterol too, making this a heart-friendly fruit relevant to a nation plagued with cardiovascular problems. Its sweetness comes from xylitol, a sugar alcohol found in the fruit fibre. This type of sugar is absorbed

more slowly and does not cause rapid fluctuations in blood sugar levels, making it a guilt-free treat for diabetics too. Since heart disease, cancer and diabetes are the top three killer diseases in our country it is no wonder blackberries are so prolific!

And the benefits don’t stop there. A 2021 study published in the journal Nutrients found that regular consumption of blackberries improved markers of brain health and memory in older adults. Researchers concluded that the anthocyanins and polyphenols in these berries help protect neurons from oxidative stress, supporting sharper thinking and better recall as we age. In other words, a bowl of blackberries isn’t just good for your joints and heart – it’s a natural brain tonic too.

The leaves also have much to offer. Ancient Greeks were known to chew blackberry leaves to relieve bleeding gums and mouth ulcers. Native Americans (as did our own medicine folk) used them as a poultice for wounds, rashes and insect bites. Sore throats can be soothed by gargling blackberry leaf tea and women’s woes were traditionally treated with blackberry juice, noted for its ability to regulate menstruation, support blood clotting and act as a muscle relaxant.

Closer to home, Irish folklore tells us that blackberries should never be picked after Michaelmas Day (29th September), when it was said the devil spat on the fruit, making them unfit to eat. Science has since revealed that late-season berries often spoil due to damp conditions and mould growth – but the old story served as a handy reminder to gather them while they were still at their best. I still find myself racing to collect a few bowls before that date, echoing the habits of my grandparents.

Practicality makes blackberries even more appealing. A handful stirred into porridge, whizzed into a smoothie, or baked into a crumble is enough to give you a burst of protective antioxidants. Better still, freezing blackberries at their peak preserves most of their nutrients, meaning you can enjoy their benefits right through Winter when your immune system could do with a seasonal lift. If you’ve got the freezer space, a stash of blackberries is one of the simplest – and tastiest – ways to invest in your future health. While the EU may hum and haw over the use of the term Superfood, we can delight that our own super food doesn’t need a label or packaging –only a bucket, a clean hedgerow and time to ramble along the brambles gathering a timely gift from Mother Nature. If I wasn’t writing about them I would be out there picking them right now!

Policemen Sacked For The Crime Of Matrimony

-Cork Constitution 02 August 1831

At the Kerry Summer Assizes in Tralee this week it was reported that three police constables named Foren, Fuller and Weir, have recently been dismissed from the force for the crime of matrimony. Their conduct in every other particular has been irreproachable and the Grand Jury has signed a strong memorial to Government in their favour. (Hmmm. Very interesting. Why? Guilty of bigamy? Possibly but unlikely. Needed permission? Yes! Members of the R.I.C. were required to get permission to marry. They had to serve seven years with the constabulary before being allowed to wed. It was also required that their intended wives had to be vetted and approved by superior officers. If allowed to marry the couple would be transferred to a county where neither had relatives.)

Kenmare Hurricane

-Kerry Evening Post 12 October 1831

Over the past two days the town and district of Kenmare has been visited by a succession of violent storms. On the night of October 6th, it blew a perfect hurricane causing incalculable damage including the following destructions.

The greater part of the bridge at Clady, about a mile and a half east of the town, and another bridge near Killgarvan, (sic) were completely swept away.

A house near Dunkerron castle and two houses at Aider were blown down, happily the poor inmates escaped unhurt. Several houses in the lower part of Kenmare town were flooded, to the great distress and damage to the residents. A quantity of corn and hay was carried away by the floods.

Dastardly Dingle Outrages

-Kerry Evening Post 02 November 1887

On Saturday night last a horse belonging to a boycotted Dingle publican was stolen from its stable. Yesterday the dead carcass of the animal was found near Ballyferriter, some ten miles from Dingle. The horse had been thrown over a cliff and then stabbed and hacked to death.

This morning a telegram from Dingle states that a transport horse belonging to the constabulary in that town was stolen out of the stables last night and no trace of the animal has been found yet. It is feared that it may have suffered the same fate as the other horse.

Stinking Problems In Tralee

-Kerry Evening Post 04 August 1832

Pierce Chute, our present acting Provost, very properly drove the fish mongers out of Abbey Street, where they have been an abominable nuisance for many a year, to a more convenient location. The inhabitants should be thankful to him for this.

Fish, in a rotting condition have been exposed for sale there in the past. It is known that these putrid fish were bought by some distressed wretches in that crowded and narrow street in the centre of this populous town, even as cholera is raging among us.

We have frequently before now, and again we beg leave to secure the attention of the Magistrates and the Board of Health to the abominable state of the Old Church-lane, the stench from which is a constant annoyance to every person who passes along the busiest and most frequented street in our town. It is a dreadful nuisance in these perilous times.

Tralee Ship Canal

-Kerry Evening Post 21 May 1831

The Commissioners appointed for the improvement of the Tralee Harbour are requesting interested contractors to submit plans and specifications, for the construction of a canal from Blennerville Harbour to the

town of Tralee, to the Government Engineer Richard Griffith.

The Grand Jury has most laudably presented £900 towards the completion of the ship canal. Each submitted proposal for the construction of the canal must include a guarantee that the works shall be completed within a period not exceeding Four Years.

(So…was the canal completed in four years? No, not even in three times four years. It opened to shipping in 1846 and the delay was largely due to funding issues.)

Riots in Dingle

-Saunders’s News-Letter 29 June 1793

On Wednesday Mrs. Mullins of Burnham House arrived in Tralee from Dingle with a chest of deeds, papers etc, to the value of £100,000 pounds, which was lodged in the Customs House, to secure them from the raging mob in Dingle. (Value today approx. €117m)

She requested that some of the 34th Foot Regiment, based in Tralee, be sent to Dingle to support other members of the military but this could not be done without an order from Government.

In the riots in Dingle the house of Mr. Kevane was entered and robbed of fifty-two guineas. It is confidently asserted that the mob amounted to 4,000 rioters.

Information is coming from Dingle today which is said to contain accounts of the most dreadful riots during last Sunday and Monday in which members of the army and rioters were killed and the elegant mansion of W. T. Mullins Esq, was totally demolished

(What was this all about? According to historian T. J. Barrington there was a major agitation against excessive rents by the Mullins estate -later Lord Ventry. A large crowd gathered in Dingle over that and other issues in June 1793.

John Griffin, Kinard, fired a shot at Captain Mullins but missed. Mullins ordered the 34th Foot Regiment to open fire on the crowd. Those killed were John Griffin, above, Thomas Fitzgerald, Dunquin, Thomas Kennedy, Ballyveheen, John Baker, Cahirdorgan, John Thomas, Gurrane, Richard Thomas, Kilquane and Mrs. Gloster, Glens. Names provided by Declan O’Connor. What about all the riots, soldiers being shot, robbery and the Mullins mansion being demolished? Was that just propaganda to justify the killings and to gain support from the gentry with fake news?)

Dingle Phoenix Host Second Public Consultation Session

Booking Now Open For Next Event

On Saturday 16th August, the second public consultation for the reimagining of The Phoenix in Dingle was held in the cinema’s auditorium. The event, titled ‘Sketching’, followed June’s ‘Listening’ session, offering the community its first look at the emerging design and the chance to actively help shape its evolution.

Yvonne McGuinness opened the day, supported by Billy Mag Fhloinn, who translated into Irish, reinforcing the centrality of the Irish language in the project’s vision. Yvonne spoke of the care taken to listen to community voices and how ambitions for the building have grown in response to public input.

Architect Andrew Clancy (Clancy Moore Architects) and planning consultant Laura Brock (Brock McClure Consultants) then presented the proposed design, using a projected physical model. Drawing from ideas raised in the June event, the design takes inspiration from Dingle’s historic townscape and community, while also reflecting international best practices seen in creative spaces across Belgium, London, Johannesburg, and Barcelona. Andrew spoke of how ideas from the town, and its creative hinterland have informed the architecture. The new Phoenix will be for everyone every day. In order to make space for all the disparate needs of the town, and to ensure the new Phoenix is sustainable and viable, it is proposed to refurbish and upgrade the existing cinema building and to extend with a series of characterful new buildings - around the existing cinema yard and on the riverbank site at the corner of Avondale and The Mall.

The result will be more than a cinema, providing spaces to watch movies, small theatrical productions, live music, and more. There will be bookable rooms for local groups to use for meetings, rehearsals or practice music. There will be project paces and artists’ studios. In addition, there will be

a gallery, a ‘living room’, and garden which will offer a place for people to gather and talk with friends about what they have seen. The building is to be robustly made, and generous in its stance - welcoming all - young and old, local and tourists. Andrew explained how the building will also be flexible - allowing it to be used in many ways.

Yvonne expressed how deeply she and her partner, Cillian Murphy, value the potential for the Phoenix to be a place where young locals first encounter art and creativity. She spoke of how she sees the spaces as a forming a ‘cultural village’ accessible for all and linking Dykegate Street to the Mall - in so doing it opens out to the town and shifts the centre of gravity of Dingle towards the Mall. She also outlined how supportive Kerry County Council has been in partnering with The Phoenix to seek public Rural Regeneration funding to support this more ambitious approach.

Laura then described the detailed nature of the planning application being prepared and the tight timeline necessary to achieve planning for this funding to be possible - stressing the importance of people sharing any concerns now so the design team can respond - rather than waiting for the planning application to be lodged.

Mary Hickson (Creative Producer) was also in attendance and answered questions relating to programme and seasonality - elaborating how the new Phoenix will seek to breathe life into the town during the winter mists and rain and give a place of shelter and vitality during the darker half of the year - in keeping with the long heritage of The Phoenix site.

Three sessions were held during the day: one specifically for immediate residential neighbours and two for the wider public. All events reached capacity, with an overwhelmingly positive and supportive response. Valuable insights were gathered and will inform the final design phase.

The next event in the consultation series “Proposing” will take place on 27th September 2025. Please register your interest via eventbrite.com (search " the phoenix public consultation session (proposing)")

The Phoenix team extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who has contributed so far - your input has made this journey both meaningful and joyful. They look forward to the exciting steps ahead.

Ceiliúradh Céad Bliain ar Thadhg Ó Conchubhair na Gráige (Cuid 1)

Roibeard Ó Cathasaigh

I gcroí na Féile i mbliana bhí ár gceiliúradh ar oidhreacht Thaidhg Uí Chonchubhair (1840-1925). Tharla san le linn dhá ócáid, ag oscailt na Féile ar an Aoine i dtús báire, mar ar dheineas fhéin cur i láthair gearra mar chomhthéacs an cheiliúrtha, ag tagairt, ar an gcéad dul síos, don chúlra stairiúil teanga as ar fáisceadh Tadhg. Ansan do rianaigh Eibhlín Ní Chonchubhair, Uí Chuanacháin, a bhfuil lúb ghaoil aici le Tadhg, sliocht sleacht ar shinsearacht Thaidhg mar chúlra dár gceiliuradh. (Tugaim míreanna as cainteanna na beirte againn san alt seo). Ar deireadh don ócáid úd, dh’eachtraigh Neasa Mistéal agus Risteard Mac Eoin an t-agallamh beirte ‘Lorg Dhomhnaill ar na Bróga’ (as stór Thaidhg) go binn is go h-anamúil dúinn.

Cúlra Teanga Thaidhg Uí Chonchubhair

A chairde na páirte, ‘Is cuí go ndéanfaimis ceiliúradh ar oidhreacht Thaidhg Uí Chonchubhair nó ‘Thadie Connor’, mar ab fhearr aithne air ina dhúthaigh fhéin, saoi na Gráige i Lios Póil – saoi i gciall na filíochta agus na béalaireachta –céad bliain tar éis a bháis. Is ceiliúradh na himeachtaí seo i gcuimhne ar Thadhg Ó Conchubhair ar ár n-oidhreacht reacaireachta a d’eascair as tobar doimhin teanga ár muintire.

Spreagadh agus dearbhú araon do mhuintir Lios Póil an ceiliúradh so ar oidhreacht eisceachtúil Thaidhg in ath-mhúscail na Gaelainne atá ar siúl go socair againn sa pharóiste le leathchéad bliain anois, mar a bhfuil muinín ár muintire ag méadú i dtreo na Gaelainne de réir a chéile. Misniú dúinn, chomh maith, go mbeadh fáil ar oidhreacht Thaidhg Uí Chonchubhair idir amhráin, agallaimh beirte agus dhrámaí sa leabhar rí-luachmhar, Reacaireacht Ghrinn na Tuaithe, in eagar ag Pádraig Ó Siochfhradha (An Seabhac), curtha i gcló cúpla mí sarar chuaigh Tadhg ar shlí na fírinne, Nollaig 1925. D’áiteoinn go bhfuil so inchurtha ina shlí féin le h-oidhreacht leithéidí, Seáin Uí Duinnshléibhe (18121889) an Bhlascaoid, nó go deimhin, ‘An Spailpín Fánach’, Séamus Ó Muircheartaigh (1877-1927) Ard na Caithne.

Fianaise shuntasach ar thobar dhoimhin teanga na muintire i Lios Póíl i ré Thaidhg Uí Chonchubhair de réir thoise an lae inniu is ea an scagadh eolaíoch i gcúrsaí teanga a dhein Garreth Fitzgerald (iarThaoiseach) ar dhaonáireamh 1911. De réir an taighde seo, díobh siúd os cionn 60 bliain d’aois, Gaeilgeoirí ab ea 99% i dtoghcheantar na Min Airde, agus 97% i dtoghcheantar Chinn Aird (Fitzgerald 2003). Comhaoisigh le Thadhg iad seo, a rugadh thart ar 1840 (bliain shaolaithe Thaidhg) dorn de bhlianta roimh bhascadh is bhárthainn An Ghorta Mhóir, a chuir dlús le meath na Gaelainne. Scéal dóchais, dar linn, go bhfuil taoide na teanga ag casadh lenár linn fhéin, agus comhartha chomhaimseartha ar athfhás na teanga inár ndúthaighne is ea a lárnaí is atá an Ghaeilge in imeachtaí na Féile ó bhliain go bliain…’

Conchubhraigh na Gráige

(Seo mír as cur i láthair Eibhlín)

A chairde, ‘Is príbhléid dom gur thug Roibeard Ó Cathasaigh cuireadh dom labhairt libh fé Thadhg Ó Conchubhair, mo shin-shin-seanathair, agus scéal

mo chlannsa i gCorca Dhuibhne a cur in iúl do mhuintir Lios Póil um thráthnóna.

Bhuel, chuala tús tráchta ar Thadhg na Gráige ar An Urnaí, gar do bhaile Cill Dara mar ar tógadh me os cionn trí scór bliain ó shin. B’é Jack m’athair, agus Patsy, a athair siúd, mac do Thadhg. Bhí an seanaleabhar, Reacaireacht Ghrinn na Tuaithe, ar bharr an raidió le linn m’óige-se, agus thuigeamair a thábhacht, agus an gaol a bhí againn le Lios Póil.

Bhíos ana-óg nuair a cailleadh Patsy (1953), ach bhí cur amach agam ar an gceangal a bhí ann im ghearchaille dom, mar ba nós lem athair is me féin dul go Ciarraí do Lá an Dreoilín sna 60aidí. Agus é ag tiomáint ó dheas ní stadadh Daid ach ag trácht ar na gaolta go léir a bhí againn i gCorca Dhuibhne – an chéad stop, bualadh isteach go tigh mo sheanaintín, Katie (Uí Iarlaithe) in Abhainn a’ Scáil, agus as san siar linn go tigh mhuintir Niallagáin i Baile an Mhathúnaigh, mar a raibh Bríd, seanaintín eile liom pósta, agus ar deireadh thiar, siar abhaile go Cill Chuáin mar a raibh Ellie, céile Phatsy, .

Clann Thaidhg is Bhríde Pósadh Tadhg na Gráige agus Bríd Ní Bhrosnacháin ón bhFothrach Mór ar 26 Feabhra 1867. Bhí seachtar mac agus ceathrar iníon acu ar an nGráig. i) Jack m’athair, is gariníon mé do Phatsy, a chuaigh mar chliamhain isteach i gCill Chuain i bParóiste Mórdhach, ii) Tadhg Óg, a d’fhan ag feirmeoireacht ar an nGráig, agus a phós Máire Ní Bheaglaoich ó Lug na gCapall, iii) Tomás nár phós, agus a d’oibrigh ar an mbóthar iarainn, iv) Johanna (Hearn) a phós i Holyoke, Massachussetts, tá a clann fós ann, v) Máire a phós Míchál Ó Ciabháin, bunmhúinteoir, agus mhúineadar beirt i scoil Naomh Breandán (Scoil a’ Chuasa), vi-ii) Séamus agus Nioclás a cailleadh go h-óg, viii) Séamus (a ainmníodh i ndiaidh a dheartháir óg), a bhí ag múineadh scoile sna Gleannta, ix) Bríd, a bhí pósta i Baile an Mhathúnaigh, x) Katie, pósta in Abhainn a’ Scáil – bhí feirm ag Muintir Uí Iarlaithe agus tigh tábhairne i lár an bhaile, gur ann a cailleadh Tadhg na Gráige fé chúram a iníne Katie – tá sise curtha sa chill i dteannta Thaidhg i mBaile na Cúirte, xi) Stephen, chuaigh seisean sa ‘Royal Navy’ agus é ar bord an bháid ghunna, HMS SNIPE’ a cuireadh go grinneall in Abha an Yangtse sa tSín, Aibreán 1918. Maraíodh é i dtimpiste san abha chéanna ina dhiaidh sin, agus tháinig an drochscéal i dteileagram dtín Ghráig.

Óige Thaidhg

Saolaíodh Tadhg Ó Conchubhair i ndeisceart Thiobraid Árann mar a raibh a athair, Timothy O’Connor fostaithe sna póilíní. Judith Callaghan a mháthair. Cuireadh an leanbh go Lios Póíl mar a raibh muintir a athar, agus bhí sé fé chúram a aintín Máire a bhí pósta le Pádraig Ó Beaglaoich i mBaile na Saor i mblianta tosaigh a shaoil. Chaith sé seal lena aintín, Nóra, a bhí pósta le Seán Ó Beaglaoich, deartháir Phádraig, i nGort na gCuileannach chomh maith. D’fhill athair Thaidhg abhaile ón nGallbhaile sa bhliain 1849 agus thóg feirm ar chíos ar an nGráig ón tiarna talún, Rev. Townsend.

Mar a tharla, bhí uncail ag Tadhg, Séamus nó James, ag múineadh i Scoil Arda Mór. B’é seo an Séamus céanna a bhfuil trácht air i seanchas na Min Airde ó bhéal Lís Ní Shúilleabháin in Téanam go Min Aird (2013) fén scoil scairte a bhí fé chúram James O’Connor, ‘An Máistrín Guistí’, sarar chuaigh sé dtín Model School ar Shráid Mherrion i mBleá Cliath le h-oiliúint ina mhúinteoir. Ceapadh mar oide é i Scoil Arda Mór don oscailt in Eanáir na bliana 1841. Measaimse go raibh a uncail Séamus lárnach i ndomhan seanchais Thaidhg. Tá fianaise éigin chuige sin i ráiteas ó Thadhg féin d’Fhionán Mac Coilm (1875-1966) ón Spúncán i gCiarraí Theas, an té ba mhó a bhailigh seanchas uaidh, mar leanas, mar atá luaite le ‘hAmhrán na Staigíní’ in An Lóchrann, Feabhra 1918, ‘Deir sé gur fhoghlaim sé óna uncail (‘James O’Connor’) é timpeall deich mblianta is dachad ó shin’. Más tearc féin an fhianaise í seo, is suntasach, dar liom. Sin agaibh mo scéalsa don bhabhta seo, fiú is go bhfuil go leor eile fós le rá – gura maith agaibh as éisteacht liom.’

(Leanfar den tuairisc ar ár gceiliúradh ar oidhreacht Thaidhg Uí Chonchubhair sa chéad eagrán eile de Chorca Dhuibhne Beo.)

Ar nóta gaolmhar, ar deireadh, tréaslaímid a ghaisce i bhFleadh na hÉireann le Tommy Ó Deargáin agus le Craobh an Ághasaigh; 1ú, Comórtas Amhránaíochta Sean-nós 12-15; 3ú Scéalaíocht 12-15. Bhí Tommy le clos go binn ar An Saol ó Dheas le Sláine Ní Chathalláin ar an Luan agus an t-amhrán ‘An Poirtín’ a chasadh aige:20250825_rteraidion-ansaolodheastommydearg_c22539596_22539600_232.

Solar Systems

Tom Kennedy

Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.

A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.

There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. OCEAN VIEW NURSING HOME

Ocean View Nursing Home will closed its doors last week in preparation for major renovations. The facility has long been one of West Kerry’s most respected employers, with a dedicated team of staff known for providing outstanding care to residents.

Ocean View has proven to be a much-needed service in the community of West Kerry. It was the vision of the late Alex O’Donnell and his wife Bonny, who returned from New York and opened its doors to the people of West Kerry and beyond for more than 20 years. Their foresight and commitment laid the foundation for decades of compassionate care.

And again tradition was upheld on Saturday when the current 2025 Roses paid the Annual Rose visit. The visit was especially exciting for one resident Marie Deasy-King who was the Boston Rose in 1964. Marie wore the Boston sash on Saturday and she enjoyed a lovely chat with Maeve Kelly representing Boston this year and Marie wished her well in the contest. We extend our sincere thanks to the entire staff of Ocean view for their dedication and work over the years. We all know what a lovely home from home Ocean View is for all the residents. We wish Riada Care every success with the planned upgrades and we hope Ocean View will reopen in the not too distant future, following the renovations.

OBITUARY

The death has occurred of Margaret Gretta O'Quigley, Nee Kennedy Goatstown, Dublin and formerly of Beheenagh, Camp. Gretta is the last surviving member of the Kennedy family in Camp. Her late sister Bridie Kennedy was married to Lar Griffin and Gretta was a much loved Aunt to all the Griffin family, Tom and Sheila and all her nieces and nephews and family in Camp and elsewhere. In turn Gretta

loved to come home to Camp to visit and her door was open to all the family in her home in Dublin. A proud Kerrywoman always, Gretta passed away peacefully after a brief illness surrounded by her loving family and in the wonderful care of the doctors, nurses and staff of Our Lady's and St Monica's wards, St Vincent's University Hospital.

The news of the passing of John Prendeville, Árdamór, Liospóil was received with deep sadness by all of us in Camp. John passed away peacefully on Tuesday, 19 August at his home surrounded by his loving family.

John never missed Camp Fair, he was one of the first farmers into the village in the morning with his prize winning rams for sale.

John was jovial and great fun and enjoyed meeting old friends at the fair and we enjoyed meeting him too. He will be missed at Camp Fair this year.

A Camp Fair that still stands out in our memories was back in 2002. There was a fundraiser for The Annascaul Antarctic Explorer Tom Crean Project.

John purchased The Pedigree Scotch Ram that day, the proceeds going to the project.

John was a man who had a great pride of place and indeed was very proud of his own place Lispole, beautifully put in a lovely tribute given by his son Sean at his funeral Mass celebrated by Fr. Michael Moynihan, PP on Friday morning.

John is predeceased by his sisters Joan and Betty (Hickson).

Sympathy is extended to his wife Bridget (Griffin) and brother Michael, daughter Amanda ; her husband Denis O’ Dowd; son Seán ; his wife Andréa; son Jimmy, his wife Órla; daughter Caroline; daughter Jane , her husband Johnny Keane, son Michael and his six grandchildren Micheál, Tomás O’ Dowd; Jack , Holly Prendeville; Rose Prendeville; Sandra Keane.

Céim Eile sa Chorn

Mícheál Ó hUanacháin

Tá rudaí ag dul beagán níos fearr ó bhíomar ag caint ar an ábhar seo cheana (táim san ardchathair le tamall).

Seacht bpointe as ceithre chluiche sraithe, ní beag san - cé gurbh fhéidir bheith ag súil le torthaí níos fearr, mar a chífimid. Agus babhta eile sa Chorn buaite, rus a fhágfaidh go mbeidh Ruagairí Shligigh ar cuairt go Trá Lí go luath.

Baile Átha Luain bocht! Tá a gcuid fadhbanna gnó acu, ach fadhbanna ar an bpáirc imeartha chomh maith. Curadh-iarracht nua ag lucht na Ríochta, ceithre chúl ó Ronan Teahan, Sean O’Connell, Robbie Cleary agus Carl Mujaguzi, agus cúl bán ag an gcúl báire nua, Matt Connor, a bhí leis na cuairteoirí go dtî an mhí seo.

Ionsaitheoir nua eile, Ewan Lee, a shábháil pointe dóibh sa chéad chluiche eile, i Luimneach, sé nóiméad ón deireadh i nGort an Mhargaidh.

Nuair a tháinig Cláirsigh na Finne ar cuairt an Aoine dar gcionn, b’iad a chuaigh chun cinn go luath sa dara leath, ach ní feidir milleán a chur ar Daniel Okwute nár éirigh leo an comhscór a bhaint amach, mar bhí sé siúd ar an bpáirc nach mór go deireadh, gur díbríodh é le cárta dearg (an dara cárta buí) díreach ag deireadh an ghnáth-ama.

Ansin cluiche mór an Choirn - Fánaithe Chóbh i bPáirc Chnocán an Iolair. Bronnadh buntáiste an-luath ar na Ciarraígh nuair a taispeánadh an cárta dearg do chosantóir Chóbh, John O’Donovan, sa chéad nóiméad.

Agus bíorbh fhada go raibh an fhoireann baie chun cinn, cic mháistriúil ag Cian Brosnan. Cic éirice sa dara leath a dheimhnigh an bua dóibh.

Nuair a tarraingíodh cluichí an Bhabhta Ceathrú Ceannais, is ar lucht Shligigh a thit an crann, agus beidh siadsan i dTrá Lí den chéad uair i lár na míosa seo chugainn.

Noel Spillane

Roimhe sin, beidh dhá chluiche eile sraithe le himirt - ach níl deireadh leis na torthaí go fóill againn. Bhí Baile Longfoirt sa Ríocht an Aoine seo caite, agus cé gur írigh leis an bhfoireann baile an lámh in uachtar a fháil orthu, níor thaispeántas é a chithódh muinín i measc an lucht tacaíochta. Uair amháin eile, d’imigh duine d’imreoirí Thrá Lí de pháirc le linn am cúiteamh ghortaithe, an cosantóir Kevin Williams, agus b'fhéidir go bhfuil sé in am ag an mbainisteoir rang disciplíne a chur ar bun, chun na tubaistí sin a sheachaint.

Mar a tharla, níor chuir sin isteach ar an toradh, mar bhí cúl scóráilte go luath sa dara leath ag Brosnan, agus gan aon chosúlacht ar na cuairteoirí go raibh an cumas iontu comhscór a bhaint amach.

Seachas easba leanúnachais, agus na fadhbanna sárú rialacha, bhí cuma tuirseach ar roinnt den fhoireann sa chluiche sin, agus b'fhéidir go bhfeicfí imreoirí óga ar an bpáirc nuair a thaistealóidh lucht na Ríochta go Dún Dealgan an deireadh seachtaine seo, agus nuair a bheidh Cóbh chucu arís eile an tseachtain seo chugainn.

Free Energy Upgrades (Warmer Homes Scheme)

The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) provides free home energy upgrades to homeowners who get certain social welfare payments. These upgrades help improve the energy efficiency and warmth of your home and are also known as the Warmer Homes Scheme.

The scheme prioritises the oldest and least energy efficient homes. You can apply for the free upgrades again if you’ve already had work done under the scheme, but your home would benefit from more upgrades. To access the scheme again you must still meet the qualifying criteria.

The scheme covers these home energy upgrades:

• Attic insulation

• Wall insulation - including cavity wall, internal wall and external wall insulation

• Draught-proofing

• Lagging jackets

• Energy efficient lighting

• Energy advice

If you qualify for the scheme because you are getting Carers Allowance, you must also complete the Carer's Allowance Confirmation Form, which you can download or get from your local CIC

Free Energy Upgrades (Warmer Homes Scheme)

Are there other options for people who do not qualify for the free

New central heating systems and replacement windows are also occasionally covered by the scheme. Your windows will only be replaced if your walls are being insulated at the same time and the existing windows are single-glazed windows. The SEAI decides if replacement windows are needed on a case-by-case basis.

Phone us Monday - Friday, 10am - 4pm on 0818 07 7860

If you do not qualify for the free upgrades, the SEAI provides other grants to help with the cost of upgrading the energy efficiency of your home. The National Home Energy Upgrade Scheme provides grants to bring your home up to an energy efficiency rating of B2 or above, using a private company to manage the work. Or, you can get individual energy upgrade grants, if you only want to do certain upgrades, and would prefer to manage the process yourself.

HEALTH

Since 1 January 2025, if you qualify for a new central heating system, the scheme will not cover a new fossil fuel boiler, such as an oil or gas boiler. However, it will cover renewable heating systems such as a heat pump. Who qualifies for the scheme?

You must own your home and be living in it. It must have been built and occupied before 2026. Your home must have a BER of C,D,EF and you must be in receipt of a qualifying social welfare payment. The fuel allowance is one of the qualifying payments. You can contact your local Citizens Information Centre to check if you are on a qualifying payment.

Funded and supported by the Citizens Information Board

If you don’t have a BER for your home, the SEAI will do a free BER to check that your home meets the qualifying criteria of having a BER of C or lower. Are there any costs associated with the scheme?

You will not be charged for work done under this scheme. However, if you sell your home within 5 years of getting the work done, you need to tell the SEAI. You should inform them in writing at least 30 days before your property is sold. The SEAI may ask you to repay some or all of the grant. This is at their discretion.

How does the scheme work and how do I apply?

There are 4 steps to this process:

1. Apply for the scheme online or by completing an application form and sending it back to the SEAI. You must ensure you meet the qualifying criteria above when applying. You can use the SEAI online portal to check if you qualify. You can get an application form from your local Citizens Information Centre (CIC).

2. Have an SEAI surveyor check your home is suitable for the works and recommend upgrades. The SEAI will do this if you qualify.

3. Get the works done by a contractor appointed by the SEAI

4. Get the works assessed by the SEAI once the works are completed. This will include a new BER assessment and may involve a quality inspection.

How do I apply?

You can apply online, download and complete the application form or ask the SEAI to post the form to you. You can also contact your local Citizens Information Centre (CIC) for an application form. You must meet the qualifying criteria. You can use the SEAI online portal to check this. You need to provide evidence that you qualify for the scheme. Full details of the information needed are on the application form.

If you are getting a qualifying payment other than Carer's Allowance, you no longer need to get the Department of Social Protection to complete part of the application form. The SEAI will check your eligibility with the DSP.

Scoil Foraoise

Nár bhreá an rud é dá bhféadfaimís a bheith amuigh fén aer na haon lá agus sinn ag foghlaim linn i suíomh nádúrtha!

Cothaíonn Scoil Foraoise caidrimh leat féin, le daoine eile agus le do thimpeallacht trí thréimhsí a chaitheamh amuigh fén aer sa nádúr.

Leagtar béim ar go mbraithfeadh gach foghlaimeoir ar chomhchéim, speisialta agus luachmhar; mar dhuine gur féidir leo a roghanna agus a gcinntí féin a dhéanamh, á stúireadh féin ina gcuid foghlamtha agus forbartha.

Tá sé bunaithe ar 6 phrionsabal - seisiúin fhadtéarmacha i dtimpeallacht nádúrtha dírithe ar fhorbairt iomlán an linbh, le deis chun dul sa tseans le tacaíocht, ó chleachtóirí cáilithe i bpróiséis atá dírithe ar an bhfoghlaimeoir.

Bogtar amach ins na haon saghas aimsire ach amháin má bhíonn sé stoirmiúil nó ró ghaofar.

Tugtar deis dos na leanaí uirlisí ar nós casúir, agus sáibh agus a leithéid a d’úsáid. Beifear ag tógaint dídine, ag sábh, ag smiotaíl sailí, ag bácáil agus ag cruthú ealaíne le cré agus péint nádúrtha agus go leor eile.

Beimid ag tosnú le seisúin go luath sa bhFómhair - seisúin 6 seachtaine do leanaí aois ghrúpa 8-12bl agus táimid ar bís ár gcéad grúpa súgartha (0-4 bl) a bheith againn i measc na gcrann!

Spending time amongst the trees (even Sitka Spruce) has been shown to benefit the immune system. It’s really good for you!

Forest School is based on 6 principles

The six principles are: long-term sessions, natural environment, holistic development, supported risks, qualified practitioners, and learner-centred processes.

These principles are based on the UK model of Forest School learning that is promoted by the Forest School Association. www. forestschoolassociation.org

Forest School is an opportunity for the same group of learners and leaders to spend a sustained period outdoors, once a week, in a wooded environment. A regular routine is followed that is learner led and facilitated by trained leaders. Learning is holistic and closely related to developmental stage and regular curricular requirements. There must be a high ratio of leaders to learners, everyone must be suitably dressed and a risk/benefit approach to health and safety is followed by all. (Irish Forest School Association, 2017)

Forest School is primarily about developing caring relationships with oneself, with others and with the natural world through spending extended periods in nature.

It is a way of being that values all learners as equal, unique and valuable; as competent to make decisions and as able to make choices and to initiate and drive their own learning and development.

A Forest School is an innovative educational approach to outdoor play and learning. Attending forest school sessions is a way of learning in nature. Children are taught how to evaluate risks, handle them, and, most importantly, use their initiative to solve problems and cooperate with others.

Forest School programmes run in all weathers (except for high winds). Children play, using full-sized tools(hammers, saws etc), develop socially and physically, and build and develop confidence, self-esteem, and self-motivation.

Forest school session for 8-12 yr olds will begin September 17th for 6 weeks.

We are thrilled to host our first toddler group(0-4 yr) sessions as Gaeilge, in a natural setting.

Tús Maith is a scheme to support families with the Irish language. Even those who are raising their children with Irish need support. It’s important to have many different sources from which you

acquire a language and a Home Visit is a pleasant way to give your child the opportunity of another source. We offer home visits for a period of 12 weeks to assist you in your efforts.

If you are interested, please get in touch with Orlaith at orlaith@cfcd.ie Aiseolas ó thuismitheoirí /Feedback from parents– “Is mór an chabhair iad na cuairteanna baile mar go spreagann siad úsáid na Gaoluinne age baile...Tugann siad muinín do na leanaí”...”The Home visits encouraged us to use more Irish at home, they nuture a confidence in the children to use Irish.”

Slow-Cooked Fish With Citrus and Herbs

Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School

This dish is a wonderful example of how a few simple ingredients, treated with care, can create something truly special. Here, local cod is gently baked with leeks, citrus, garlic, and herbs, allowing everything to slowly mingle in the oven. The leeks are the backbone of the recipe, bringing a soft sweetness that balances the brightness of lemon and mandarin. A touch of saffron adds warmth and a subtle richness, lifting the flavours without overpowering the fish. Slow cooking keeps the cod moist and tender, while the citrus rounds and herbs infuse each bite with freshness.

The result is light yet deeply satisfying, perfect served with warm bread, couscous, or simply on its own with a green salad. It’s a dish that feels both comforting and elegant, letting local fish and vegetables shine while drawing inspiration from the sun-soaked flavours of the Middle East.

Ingredients

pinch of saffron threads

2 leeks, cut in half lengthways and cleaned extra virgin oil

5-6 garlic cloves, thinly sliced

1 lemon very thinly sliced into rounds, seeds picked out 1 mandarin orange, very thinly sliced, seeds picked out 800g cod, skin removed good handful of dill and tarragon, chopped salt and pepper

Method

Heat the oven to 160ºC

Crush the saffron threads into a fine powder in a mortar and pestle. Add the saffron to a small bowl of warm water about 50ml) and set aside.

Add some oil to a pan over low to medium heat, add the leeks and allow them to soften. Take your time with this, after about 5-8 minutes add the garlic and citrus slices, season well. Allow this to cook for another few minutes.

Spread this about half of this mixture on a shallow oven tray. Season the fish well and place the fish over the leeks, pour the saffron water over the fish, then top with the remaining leek mixture. Scatter the herbs over and pour in some oil. Place this in the oven.

Bake this for about 20-25 minutes. Bake until the fish is opaque and easily flakes off with a fork around the thickest part. Spoon all the leeks, citrus and fat over, taste and season with more salt if needed, and serve.

Inch Notes

Community spirits : Trá Pháidín Reisdency

In early August, seven-person band, Trá Pháidín, were welcomed to Inch for a six-day residency. The band, with members hailing from counties Kerry, Cork, Galway, Sligo, Offaly, and Waterford, were invited by local artist Laura Fitzgerald to come to Inch and learn about its rich folklore and history. Trá Pháidín were based at Inch Community Centre, the former primary school, and over the six days, they researched folklore, met with locals, explored the Inch landscape, and began to write new music. Inch Community Centre was an important site as much of the project’s research originates from the ‘Bailiúchán na Scol’ or ‘The Schools Collection’, a specific collection of Dúchas, the National Folklore Collection. This collection contains approximately 740,000 pages of folklore and local tradition compiled by pupils from 5,000 primary schools between 1937 and 1939. The Inch area contributions would have been recorded at the former national school and included stories such as An Fear Sí and An Corcán Ór, as well as Piseoga.

On Friday 8 August, Laura organised a talk by John Roche, a local historian, about the Castleisland Moonlighters. The Moonlighters were a group that opposed landlord rule and evictions in Ireland in the mid to late 1800s. They often encouraged tenant farmers not to pay their rent, sometimes using violence and intimidation to further their cause. However the Moonlighters contribution to the success of the Land War, land & property purchases, has been under-estimated until recently. John Roche has dedicated many years to telling a more balanced account of the Moonlighters actions and the results to which led to the establishment of landrights. Historically, two Moonlighter incidents occurred at Inch apparently resulting in a local priest cursing Inch. This talk, aimed at both local community audiences, is part of Trá Pháidín’s residency, hoping to open ideas around past historical incidents and how they may still resonate in contemporary places like Inch. On Saturday 9 August, locals of Inch were invited to meet Trá Pháidín at the community centre to tell their stories and hear some tunes. The band will return for the second part of their residency in early October.

The collecting of local folklore and Trá Pháidín’s residency are part of a larger project being developed by Laura. The overall project is called Community Spirits and also includes a new film/animation work by Laura and publication featuring her own writing as well as that from invited contributors and those selected through an open call. The project will also feature an illuminated text installation at the community centre. The project has been funded through the Arts Council of Ireland’s Visual Art Project Award and has been over a year in the making. Inch also welcomed Niamh Brown, a curator and producer based in Limerick, who is producing the project with Laura. Community Spirits will culminate with

a special two-day event filled with talks, performances and music during the last weekend of November.

It's All In The Mind

LETTING GO

Orla Smyth

‘To let go is not to regret the past, but to grow and live for the future.

To let go is to fear less and love more’ - Nelson Mandela

There is a deep wisdom that comes, not from answers but from letting go of the questions

Just for now

Let go of worrying

Let go of choices

Let go of consequences

Let go of blame

Let go of being in the right

Let go of regrets

Let go of retribution

Let go of justice and what is unfair

Let go of should

Let go of failure

Let go of ownership

Let go of goals and ambition

Let go of attachment

Let go of the questions

Maybe a better way to phrase it is to let it be, Don't fight or struggle with it, no need to push or force Don't hold on so tightly, gently loosen your grip, Just for now release the tension in your muscles

Unclench your jaw, unfold the palms of your hands

Slow down, listen -

Your thoughts may protest. Your emotions may stage a mutiny - let them,

You stand your ground , literally feel the ground beneath you, Breathe, just this breath

Let life flow through you

Right now in this precise moment you are basically ok, There is nothing else to attend to.

Simply pay attention to the stillness , hear the sounds around you and Notice…how does this feel? Just this

Working From Home?

Expand your social circle in Corca Dhuibhne

Grow Remote is an Irish social enterprise whose mission is to make good quality jobs available to everyone, wherever they live - especially applicable to us in Corca Dhuibhne. The organisation helps workers find and thrive in remote jobs while also advocating on behalf of this sector. With more people working and wanting to work this way, there is an increasingly positive impact on rural societies. Jobs boards and more information on www.growremote.ie.

Potential downsides of working remotely include isolation, without colleagues next to you to share the load. To combat this, Grow Remote creates regular opportunities for remote workers to socialise and connect with each other. Towns across Ireland have local chapters with volunteer leaders setting up social events to enable locals meet-up. Aodán Ó Conaill & Liz Ryan are the Dingle Chapter leads, which is one of Ireland’s largest with circa 120 members, growing steadily every month. Other parts of Kerry have chapters too - remote workers can attend any chapter’s events.

The Dingle chapter tries to do something different each month, taking advantage of the brilliant resources here. 2025 highlights: beginners yoga, making St Bridget’s crosses at Púca café, cheering on the Six Nations Rugby in Paddy Bawn’s, Craic in Neligan’s with Irish set dancing, making pendants with Celtic Coastal Creations and a killer-pool evening in Dingle Bridge House! We love working with local organisations and businesses - especially newer and small ones & we welcome collaboration ideas, especially in the outdoor pursuits area. Also open to considering volunteer efforts locally.

If you (or someone you know) is working without the perks of a traditional workplace, or if there’s someone who is curious if remote work is for them, encourage them to come along to our next event. (Hybrid workers also welcome.) It’s informal and friendly with new faces at each gathering. Yes, it’s hard to start something new and if you’re slow to join us, know that you will be welcomed in and handled with care.

We have a Whatsapp group for the Dingle network which is the best way to connect and hear first about events. To join: scan the QR code with your camera. To see our upcoming events, search www.eventbrite.ie for ‘Grow Remote’ in ‘Dingle’.

`We've Come a Long Way' is the moving double memoir of Brendan and Mary, who left 1950's rural Ireland for a new life in Birmingham. Tá na leanaí thar nais ar scoil agus naoinraí tar éis briseadh fada, cíocras chun na cairde ar chuid acu, doicheall áirithe ar a thuilleadh. Guím gach rath ortha go léir, agus ortha siúd atá ag tabhairt an saol mór ortha féin tar éis na hárdteiste, pé acu ar thóir oibre, i mbun printíseachta ar nós Rós úr Thrá Lí nó ag tabhairt fé ar cheann de iliomad cúrsaí atáid. Ná rabhdar riamh díomhaoin ach lena dtoil.

Trian Riabhach

An bhfuil fios ag éinne cá bhfuil an Trian Riabhach i bporóiste Mórach?
