Harvest Health: Food to Soothe a Busy Mind
Irene Flannery, Nutritional Therapist

If you live in Kerry, you don’t need me to tell you that Summer can be both a blessing and a whirlwind. The long days, the colour in the hedgerows the swell of visitors — they fill our pockets, our tables and our hearts. But for many who work in hospitality or tourism, August also brings a particular kind of exhaustion. The constant busyness leaves the nervous system humming, digestion often compromised and mood a little frayed. It’s no coincidence. Science now confirms what Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has long understood — the gut and the mind are deeply connected. Modern research shows that when our digestion is under strain, our mood, resilience and sleep can suffer. That’s why Late Summer, with its abundance of naturally sweet, grounding foods, offers the perfect opportunity to nourish both body and mind, helping us find our centre again before the quieter months of Autumn.
In TCM, there is a “fifth season” between the yang peak of Summer and the yin retreat of Autumn. Late Summer is connected to the Earth element and to the spleen and stomach — the centre of our digestive and energy systems. The Earth element governs digestion, not just of food but of thoughts and experiences. Worry, rumination and overthinking are signs of an out-of-balance Earth element — something most of us recognise after weeks or months of constant “go mode.” When the spleen and stomach are weakened, you may feel tired after meals, crave sugar, or notice bloating, loose stools or a dip in mood.
Fibre-rich vegetables and live-culture foods play a central role in restoring that balance. They feed beneficial gut bacteria, which in turn produce short-chain fatty acids that reduce inflammation and support mental health. This isn’t just a notion from holistic health — the science is constantly backing up what Nature has been telling us for donkey’s years. In early 2025, Harvard Medical School identified a gut bacterium, Morganella morganii, that produces an inflammationtriggering molecule linked to major depressive disorder, offering a clear biochemical explanation for how gut imbalances can influence mood. Around the same time, Stanford researchers mapped out how the gut communicates directly with the brain via both the vagus nerve and microbe-derived chemicals, showing that disruptions can affect mood, sleep, motivation and even play a role in anxiety and long COVID brain fog. Every forkful of fibre-rich vegetables or fermented goodness — whether it’s sauerkraut, fermented beetroot or a simple home-grown apple — is a small, tangible step toward a steadier mind and a calmer nervous system.
When the nervous system has been running hot, we need food that brings it gently back into balance, not more stimulation. Late Summer’s harvest is perfectly designed for this. The natural sweetness of root vegetables, ripe fruits and golden grains is grounding and satisfying, strengthening the spleen in TCM and calming restless thoughts. From a modern nutrition perspective, the slow-release carbohydrates in oats, barley, sweet potatoes and corn help stabilise blood sugar, preventing the energy crashes that can worsen anxiety and low mood. Magnesium-
rich foods such as beet greens, spinach, pumpkin seeds and blackberries support muscle relaxation, reduce the perception of stress and prepare the body for quality sleep. The season also offers polyphenol-rich fruits — blackberries, plums and late raspberries — shown to protect the brain from oxidative stress and support cognitive function.
Even in a busy September, these foods can be worked into daily life without fuss. A pot of harvest vegetable soup, with onions, carrots, courgettes and a handful of oats simmered until silky, offers slowrelease energy and a gentle sweetness that soothes the body. A warm blackberry and apple compote, topped with seeds and oats, brings fibre and hedgerow polyphenols to breakfast or dessert. Quick fritters made from grated courgette, fresh sweetcorn and herbs make the most of seasonal abundance and pair beautifully with a crisp salad and late season tomatoes. These dishes offer more than just fuel — they’re a way of telling the body that it is safe to slow down, to digest and to reset after the rush of Summer.
Nature doesn’t switch from full bloom to bare branches overnight — it moves through this bridge season, letting the soil rest and the crops ripen fully before harvest. We can take a cue from that rhythm. Even if September is still busy, weaving in moments of grounding — through food, fresh air and mindful eating — helps our bodies and minds recover from the high tide of Summer. In TCM, this is called “nourishing the centre”; in modern science, it’s about supporting the gut–brain connection and reducing the wear and tear of chronic stress. Whatever the language, the message is the same: the foods of Late Summer are more than ingredients, they are medicine. A bowl of soup, a handful of blackberries, a quiet moment with a cup of lemon balm tea — these small acts steady the mind, soothe the body and prepare us to step into Autumn with more resilience and a little more ease.

Exciting Programme Announced For The Inaugural Milltown History And Heritage Weekend

A series of walks and talks have been announced as part of the inaugural Milltown History and Heritage Weekend which will take place between 22 and 24 August.
An evening with storyteller, Eddie Lenihan, a guided walk of historic Milltown and a presentation on plans for the conservation of the local White Church have been arranged by the Milltown History and Heritage Society. Information and bookings are now available on their website. Since its establishment two years ago, the Society has been running a series of events and recently released an acclaimed new documentary film on the heritage and the landscape of Milltown. It is hoped that the third weekend of August each year will become an annual celebration of the rich and unique history and heritage of the locality.
On Friday, 22 August, in an event which is part of national Heritage Week, local historian Dr. John Knightly, conservation architect Karol O'Mahony, and arborist Cormac Foley will outline the story of the White Church as well as details of the preparation of a Conservation Management Plan for its future preservation.

The White Church is an important ecclesiastical site, largely rebuilt in the 18th century as an estate church. The preparation of a Conservation Management Plan for the church is being supported by a grant awarded by the Heritage Council in 2025.
On Saturday, 23 August, the Society presents an engaging and enlightening evening with one of Ireland best-known and instantly recognisable storytellers, historians, and folklorists, Eddie Lenihan. In his own unique style, Eddie will present tales of Irish myth and folklore and ancient Irish traditions and customs, many of which are being lost in the modern world. This event is suitable for all ages and is a special occasion which is not to be missed.
Finally, on Sunday, 24 August, at noon, Dr. John Knightly will lead a walking tour of Milltown which will explore, showcase and inform participants about the historical, cultural, and architectural significance of this remarkable 18th century estate village.
All of the information and booking details for all events are now available on the website of the Milltown History and Heritage Society: www. milltownhistoryheritage.ie

Two Dingle Policemen Murdered
-Pall Mall Gazette 07 August 1920
At Cork Police-court today a man was remanded in custody charged on suspicion with answering the description of a man alleged to be involved in the murders of Constable Lenihan and Constable Roche, of the Royal Irish Constabulary, at Dingle, County Kerry, on July 13 last.
The accused refused to recognise the court or remove his cap which was removed by a constable. A description of the wanted man was handed up to the Bench.
The accused man took no part or interest in the proceedings and spent the time reading a book.
(The suspect’s name was not released.)
Trawler Sinks Near Blasket Sound
-Londonderry Sentinel 27 June 1935
The British Trawler Syndelaie struck a rock yesterday near the Blasket Island, County Kerry, while battling heavy seas in dense fog and sank within an hour. The captain and crew of ten took to their boats. They were fortunate to be rescued by another trawler, which with difficulty took them safely to Dingle, County Kerry. Captain Watts, of Milford Haven, (Wales), told a reporter that the rescue vessel arrived just as his crew were taking to the boats. The crew lost all their belongings. (They were lucky to be found in the ‘dense fog’.)
Drowned In Mounteagle Lake
-Cork Examiner 08 May 1858
This week a young man named David Kavanagh, 21, the son of a comfortable farmer of Keelurra, parish of Ventry came by his death under the following circumstances: - It appears that he and several other young people, of both sexes, from the same townland, went up Mounteagle to see their sheep and lambs.
After seeing and petting them they began to amuse themselves at the edge of the lake. Young Kavanagh put his hat swimming in the water, but a slight wind pushed it away from the lake edge. When he saw it was going too far, he followed it, got into deep water and drowned. Early yesterday morning a canoe was carried up to Keelurra from Ventry Coastguard Station on a cart and then carried on men’s shoulders to the lake. After searching for some time, the body was seen and recovered. The oldest person in the parish could not recall ever having heard of a boat being on the lake before, which is remarkable considering the size of its brown trout. It is more than a mile in circumference and the men in the canoe said they were sorry they had not brought a line to measure what they believe is a great depth of water. (Keelurra – Cill Ura).
Missing Bank Clerk
-Northern Whig 25 July 1939
Almost three weeks have passed since James MacDougall, a 29 -year-old Scottish bank clerk paid his bill at a hotel in Dingle, County Kerry, and then vanished. His brother, John MacDougall, believes the missing man is still alive and may be suffering from loss of memory. John came to Kerry to take part in the on-going intensive search for the missing man. He told a reporter that James is a most experienced traveller. Meanwhile, a young Killarney woman reported having seen James early on July 10.
A Cork tourist claimed to have seen him near Glengariff on July 11, and three Killarney hotel guests claimed to have identified the missing man from a photo as a man who left Killarney on a bicycle on July 12. Police are following up on these reports.
Meanwhile, the waters around Clogher are being dragged in a search operation where the missing man was also reported seen and fishing
smacks are searching Dingle Bay. News of his disappearance is being kept from the man’s father who is not well.
(Was the bank clerk working in Dingle or just a visitor? Who raised the alarm?)
German Spy In Dingle
-Western Morning News 09 July 1940
A man claiming to be a British citizen was sentenced to three years Penal Servitude at a Dublin court yesterday. He was charged with landing at an unapproved port, namely Dingle, County Kerry, from Rotterdam, contrary to the Emergency Powers Act.
His name was Karl Anderson, and it was alleged at a previous hearing that he told the police he was a British citizen, born in Sweden and after the German occupation he left Rotterdam, being landed by an English boat in Dingle Bay on June 12.
(A search of the War records shows that Karl Anderson was the alias used by Walter Simon, a German spy who arrived in Dingle Bay on June 12, 1940, on board the German submarine, U-38. Probably a well-known story around Dingle.)
Drowning And Robbery
-Saunders’s Newsletter 17 April 1775
Last Monday a provision boat on her way up to the town of Tralee, capsized and every one of the eight-man crew drowned.
On the same day, in Dingle, Mrs. Fitzgerald was murdered by four fellows, who carried off with them a gold and silver watch, her property.
Jailed For Gathering Seaweed
-Cork Examiner 13 February 1843
At this moment two poor fellows are serving time in the Kerry Gaol (Jail). They were committed there by two Dingle magistrates, who are themselves landlords along the Kerry coast and having no doubt a direct interest in punishing these men for harvesting seaweed.
(Very brave of the Examiner to point the finger at the magistrates.)

DINGLE REGATTA. The Annual Dingle Regatta which has grown into a two day event is scheduled for this weekend August 16th and 17th. The Saturday programme consists of naomhóg races for youth ranging from under 12s to under 18s and starts at 2pm. Sundays programme also starting at 2pm is primarily for adult competitors with opportunities for those who never rowed before to try their hand in a novelty shortened course and has usually proved a popular experience for the brave contestants. So come along either or both afternoons to the pier and cheer on all the local teams not forgetting the visiting crews also. The regatta and races were for many years the main two weekends of the year here in Dingle and now how things have changed with something happening almost every weekend in recent years.
SAM MAGUIRE HOMECOMING. Dingle GAA wish to thank all who helped to make the Kerry Team homecoming evening in Dingle such a huge occasion again this year. The crowds who lined the streets really seamed to get behind the team's success and it was really special to see so many young people of all ages call out the players by name who duly obliged taking photos and autographing clothing and banners. Well done to all the players, panel
members and management for making the long journey west after a tough few months of preparation in the lead up to the final. Long may we have such memorable celebrations on the streets of our town for all to enjoy.
DINGLE RACES. Despite the mixed weather over the weekend the 3 Day Dingle Races again attracted a huge number of horses and ponies with many taking part in a number of races over different distances on the infamous Ballintaggart track. The racing visitors really bring a special atmosphere to the area and seem to fit in very easy with the local racing enthusiasts who they have got to know personally and are made very welcome too.
Congratulations to the local racing committee and huge number of volunteers who ensure the smooth running and continued success of such a major event on the racing and social calendar. For the record the Donegal trained Here We Go Again was the Dingle Derby winner for 2025.
HURLING. Dingle GAA have introduced hurling training for under 11 players, meeting on Sunday mornings in Páirc An Ághasaigh from 11am. Players registered with other West Kerry clubs who may be interested in hurling are welcome to join in also. We need help with coaching so anyone with some hurling or camogie experience will be most welcome to join in even on an occasional basis and pass on their small ball skills to the next generation. Contact Richie, Stephen, Euge or Noel for further information. BUSINESS. Parking or the use of parking spaces in our town centre really came to the fore

over the past few weeks. The Business Chamber once again appeal mainly to those working in town to use parking facilities on the periphery of the town and not take up valuable spaces for long periods depriving shoppers and particularly older people of parking nearer to their intended business destinations. The Council or the Business Chamber will have to tackle the issue sooner rather than later and put a long term plan in place be it for seasonal or all year round clarification.

Jessica's Hope

Hello, my name is Jessica. I am a mother to an amazing, fun and sweet 7 year old called Peter. I am a wife to my dear husband Edwin. I am a daughter, a sister, an aunt, a niece, a cousin, a friend, a person who loves playing games with friends, going to the cinema, going cycling, going horse riding, going for walks out in the fields near our home in Annascaul. A person with hopes and dreams for the future.
I also have MS.
On the Friday of the June bank holiday weekend 2012, at age 29, after experiencing several symptoms such as numbness, fatigue and walking difficulties, I got my answer. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. A quick explanation for those of you that don’t know much about the disease. MS is an unpredictable disease of the central nervous system. It is progressive and often debilitating. My own immune system was attacking my body. It attacks the protective sheath, called myelin, that covers nerve fibres causing inflammation. Symptoms can range from loss of vision, issues with mobility and balance, loss of sensation, cognitive impairment, and many others. An individual’s experience with MS may change from day to day and year to year.
There is no cure for multiple sclerosis.
Luckily for us we discovered a professor half-way across the globe, George Jelinek, who developed a wonderful lifestyle program: Overcoming MS (OMS). Based on proper scientific research it is built around diet, vitamin D, exercise, meditation and medication. It aims to have a significant positive impact on MS and slow down its progression. Most of all it gave us hope, hope that I could live a healthy and active life and that my MS would not be the end of all things good.
HANDY LOADS
Runs, Sand, Aggregate & Stone. All loads considered Excavator site clearance/groundwork. • 3 tonne Excavator
• 3 tonne Dumper • Micro Digger and Dumper
Fast forward 13 years, I am still here, I am still walking and I strongly believe that OMS helped me stay healthy much longer than I would have been without. However, my MS didn’t stop completely. Slowly through the years It got a little bit worse. The fatigue is never-ending and ruins life in many ways. Walking isn’t always easy and my balance is off. Especially the last few years I am having more trouble with my walking and all the hidden symptoms (fatigue, leg weakness, depression, spasticity, migraines to name a few). They are stopping me from enjoying life to the fullest. And I can’t run without falling over my own feet – I can’t play soccer properly with my son or run to him if he needs my help.
I am currently raising money to get Hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT). This is a treatment that resets the immune system, theoretically stopping it from attacking my own body. HSCT is a tough treatment, involving heavy doses of chemotherapy and worst of all, for a mum: 4 weeks away from my son and husband. The treatment is unfortunately not available in Ireland and is only available for me in Mexico and including travel expenses, medication, 24-hour care the total costs come to a staggering €60,000.
So far we have raised over half the amount of money thanks to generous family members, friends, random strangers and also thanks to many generous people and businesses in Dingle and we are very grateful for this! But we are not there yet!
I really need help to raise funds for this life changing treatment so I will be able to keep walking and enjoy life with my family.
So please donate hope.
Hope that I can stop this disease and hope that I won’t end up in a wheelchair and hope that I can run around with Peter and enjoy seeing him grow up (but not too fast!)!

CAMP FAIR
Camp Sheep Fair falls on Thursday 18th September this year. One of the oldest surviving traditional sheep fairs in the country, Camp Fair in recent years is even bigger and better than ever.
An auction in the afternoon for a local charity/group has attracted huge crowds of local interest in the fair. This year our auction is in aid of Camp Junior Soccer Club, a great local sporting organisation with a huge membership of young people with great support from parents and leaders. While being very successful on the field of play, participation is also key to the success of the club.
After school on Camp Fair Day all the children from Aughacalsa school and from the Secondary schools arrive to have fun at the fair. In olden times when the Camp children attended school in the village they had a day off, but now the fun starts after school and it is great to see that tradition living on amongst our young people.
Local sheep farmers are encouraged to bring sheep for sale again this year. The essence of the fair is the sheep penned for sale every year at Camp Cross. Farmers and buyers from Keel and across the hill who make their way to Camp every year going back generations of their family are the backbone of the Fair. They come from Annascaul and the Castlegregory lower West to the point of Brandon area too. Camp Fair has always been a social event and a family day out in the parish.
Music, song and dance in the pubs while the mutton pie is the traditional dish of Camp Fair. They are available in O Dwyers/Mace, Ashes Pub and you have to have one of Mary's Mutton Pies at The Junction Bar. then your day is surely complete.
So please put Camp Fair on Thursday 18th September in your diary and we will all be praying for a fine day, everyone is welcome!
the centuries. Sadly, there was a poignant moment in Croke Park this year when at the start of the game, Campman, Dr Seán Murphy who passed away last April was remembered in Croke Park.
Sean won three All-Ireland SFC medals with Kerry – and was named on the Gaelic football teams of the century and the millennium. He is regarded as one of Kerry’s greatest ever half-back, he was an integral member of the Kerry team in a career that spanned from 1950 to 1962.

KERRY ROSE
It seems every year, we in West Kerry have a link to one of the Roses. The 2025 Kerry Rose, Laura Daly from Ballymacelligott has strong West Kerry links. Her grandmother Nora Herlihy- Lovett is a native of the Maharees and the late Jimmy Herlihy from Rathdubh, Annascaul was her great grandfather.
To say that most of us in the peninsula are related to Laura is surely an understatement. So we will all be watching Laura on Television on Monday/ Tuesday night and wishing her well in the contest for The Rose of Tralee. Laura, Go n-éirí an t-adh leat!

Saturday 30th August, 11 to 4pm. Ionad Caitlin Naofa. Ventry

Come and join Ben with his creative celebration of West Kerry’s hedgerows and the animals found within. These workshops are designed to allow locals and visitors to spend just a few minutes, or maybe a few hours immersed in making ART. No previous experience necessary and free for all attending.
Open to all ages (under 16’s to be accompanied by an adult), Ben says, “We will explore some of the local flora and fauna of this region with drawing, painting and sculpture. Creating images in pencil and paints of what we see in the natural hedges and field boundaries around us. As well this, we shall also be as attempting to make a large sculpture of an animal found within these hedgerows, from recycled materials. Come on! it’s going to be good fun, so come along and get creative and help me in this celebration of Wonderful West Kerry.”
All the drawn and painted artworks made during each day will form part of a large collage made into a poster. This, together with the completion of the animal sculptures will become part of an larger traveling exhibition to help celebrate the natural environment. Many of the hedgerows here make up part of the foundations of this beautiful landscape and are an often overlooked treasure.
These open art sessions are presented to the local communities to allow local residents and visitors alike to come and share in this Celebration of Connecting Kerry’s wildlife, Hedgerows & trees in the Kingdom.

Dingle Community Games – A Celebration of a Wonderful Year
Dingle Community Games are delighted to celebrate what has been a truly fantastic year so far. Throughout the year, children in our community have enthusiastically participated in a wide range of events, including indoor and outdoor soccer, basketball, football, tag rugby, cycling on grass, gymnastics, art and handwriting, cross country, hurdles, sprints, long-distance running, long jump, ball throw, relay, chess, and quiz — competing at local and county levels.
We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to every single child who took part and proudly represented Dingle at local, county, Munster, and even National levels. We are incredibly proud of all of you.
This year, we are thrilled to have several national finalists, and we want to take a moment to celebrate their remarkable achievements and wish them the very best in the upcoming All-Ireland finals.
Under 14 Boys Relay Team

Our Under 14 relay team delivered outstanding performances at the county finals in Castleisland, progressing confidently through the heats and semi-finals before winning the final in style. Their calm focus and precise handoffs were key to their success. Donncha Ó Murchú, Fergal Corcoran, Shane O Conor, Tómas Flannery, and Eoin Courtney will now go on to represent Kerry in the All-Ireland finals in Carlow on the 23rd of August. Best of luck, boys — we’re all behind you!
Under 14 Boys Tag Rugby Team

National Competitions on August 24th, following a remarkable journey through the county and provincial stages. The team showcased outstanding skill and determination in Tralee, where they won all four of their County-level matches, securing their place in the Munster finals. On July 12th, during a sweltering summer heatwave, they faced two intense and hard-fought games—first against Clerihan, Tipperary in the semifinal, and then against Newcastle West, Limerick in the final. Both matches went to extra time, highlighting the team's resilience and teamwork under pressure. Since then, they have been training consistently and with great focus in preparation for the Nationals, eager to make their mark on the national stage. We wish them all the very best of luck as they take on this exciting challenge and want them to know how incredibly proud we are of all they have achieved far.
Fergal Corcoran – Under
14 Hurdles

A huge congratulations to Fergal Corcoran, who has qualified for the All-Ireland final in the Under 14 hurdles for the second consecutive year. This is a tremendous achievement, and we’re incredibly proud of Fergal’s continued dedication and success. He too will represent Kerry in Carlow on August 23rd. Best wishes, Fergal!
Ruby Szczepanska – Under 14 Cross Country Relay

done to Ruby Szczepanska, who represented Kerry as part of the Under 14 cross country relay team

Her exceptional penmanship and creativity greatly impressed the judges. As a result, she has earned a welldeserved place in the National Finals. Aoibhín will proudly represent Dingle at the National Community Games in Carlow on September 6th. We are incredibly proud of her and wish her every success in the finals.
Jamie Murphy – Under 12 200 Meters

Meitheal na gCrann
Sure you can't grow trees in West Kerry!
Is buncloch crainn dúchasaigh don nádúr ar a bhfuilimid go leir ag brath

Native Irish trees are one of the building blocks of a healthy eco system to support life. They also help protect against floods and lessen the impact of winds, as well as giving joy and peace to us humans. In the past two years a group now numbering 100 people in West Kerry have planted nearly 15,000 native Irish trees all around the peninsula. This year we hope to plant at least 10, 000 more. Meitheal na gCrann will shortly order free trees from an NGO called Trees On The Land, and in February we will distribute and plant them in as young saplings. The main types of trees are native hedging (native mix of smaller trees with predominance of hawthorn), or mixed woodland (Alder, Rowan, Oak, Birch, Guelder rose, hawthorn, Scots pine, crab apple etc), but there will also be some availabilty of fruit and nut trees.
Our Meitheal can give advice on what grows well, or help with planting and tree care if required. If you have no land you can join our meitheal and help out in our planting gangs in exchange for tea and cake. If you have a patch of land and are interested in planting any trees please get in contact - the lowest order last year was one tree, and the highest was 1000 but that is not a limit! If your dad has land, or your second cousin might be open to it, have a chat and see if they'd like to try planting a few free native Irish trees this year.
Bígí I dteagmháil ag cdcommunityforum@gmail.com nó seol téacs chuig 087 2796182 má tá suim agat a bheith páirteach.

Glantóireachta - Is Mise le Mess ag Lorg Daoine

Tá Ronin films ag ullmhú sraith nua den chlár ‘Is Mise le Mess’ ar TG4. Is clár é ina dtéann ár scothfhoireann glantóireachta ó Ghaeltacht Thír Chonaill ar fud na tíre ag glanadh tithe agus ag cabhrú le daoine a spásanna a eagrú.
Táimid ag lorg rannpháirtithe ar fud na hÉireann agus cuirimid fáilte roimh iarratais ó gach saghas cúlra ó mhic léinn go daoine níos sine agus ó dhaoine aonair go teaghlaigh mhóra - daoine nach mbeadh an t-am, an fuinneamh nó an neart acu, b’fhéidir, a gcuid tithe a choimeád néata slachtmhar an t-am ar fad. Cuirimid fáilte roimh iarratais ar son daoine eile – i.e. dá n-ainmneofaí duine/daoine le cabhair a fháil ó na mná..
Tá spioraid an chláir spraíúil agus éadrom ach chomh maith leis sin tá sé mar aidhm aige cabhrú leis na rannpháirtithe agus leis an lucht féachana a thuiscint nach gá go mbeadh an glanadh deacair má dhéantar é i gcéimeanna agus uaireanta nach bhfuil ag teastáil ach cuideachta. Ní raibh ach garáiste nó áiléir trína chéile ag roinnt daoine i sraith a haon ach tá na mná go maith ábalta aon rud a chaitear ina dtreo a láimhseáil, fiú francaigh (mar pheataí tí) mar a tharla sa chéad sraith!
Déantar an clár as Gaeilge agus mar sin bheimis ag lorg cainteoirí líofa/ láidir Gaeilge.
Is féidir iarratais a sheoladh chuig info@roninfilms.tv

Féile Lios Póil 2025
Roibeard Ó Cathasaigh
Tá Féile Lios Póíl 2025 curtha dínn againn, agus sinn ana-shásta agus buíoch gur éirigh linn clár iomlán na Féile (c. leathchéad imeacht, le c. dhá mhíle duine i bpáirt) a chur i gcrích go slachtmhar lena linn, le tacaíocht ár muintire, agus le cóir aimsire lena chois. Níl spás anso ach do bheagán ar tharla le linn na Féile. Oscailt oifigiúil
B’é ár gCathaoirleach agus ár gComhairleoir Contae, Robert Brosnan, a chuir tús oifigiúil leis an bhFéile tráthnóna Aoine lena leagan siúd ‘d’Óró ’Sé do Bheatha ’Bhaile’ canta aige le cúnamh ón gcomhluadar bríomhar a bhí i láthair i Halla John L., agus ‘anois ar theacht na Féile’ mar líne dheiridh aige. Ach, ní Gráinne Mhaol a tháinig thar sáile chun Oscailt Oifigiúil na Féile a dhéanamh, ach Hannah Ní Dhubháin (Cailín Gaelach CLG Lios Póil don Chomórtas Peile i Ráth Chairn) a sheol anuas ó Arda Mór chugainn. Ghuigh Hannah rath ar an bhFéile, agus sonas is sláinte dos na héinne a bheadh i bpáirt lena linn.
Ina dhiaidh sin, bhí guth na n-Óg le clos go binn lena tuairisciú ar thograí oideachasúla sna taispeántais (ar cuireadh ana-shuim iontu le linn na Féile) a d’fhorbraíodar i rith na scoilbhliana fé stiúir ag a múinteoir, Séamus Ó Dubhda, Scoil Eoin Baiste, mar leanas, i) ‘Mícheál Cíosóg’ ag T.J. Ceiliúradh Céad Bliain Mar bharr air sin, cuireadh tús leis an gCeiliúradh Céad Bliain ar shaoi na Gráige, Tadhg Ó Conchubhair (1840-1925) ag ócáid na h-oscailte. Buaic an cheiliúrtha don dtráth úd, b’fhéidir, mar a dh’eachtraigh Neasa Mistéal agus Risteard Mac Eoin an t-agallamh beirte ‘Lorg Dhomhnaill ar na Bróga’ as stór Thaidhg go rithimiúil fileata dúinn; Domhnall: ‘A Nóra, a stóraigh, a bhfeacaís mo bhróga/d’fhághas fé’n leabaidh aréir iad…’; Tá i gceist agam dul níos doimhne inár gceiliúradh ar oidhreacht Thadhg Uí Chonchubhair sa chéad eagrán eile de Chorca Dhuibhne Beo Pearsaí an Féile
B’iad Bridie Farrell ó Gharraí na dTor, úinéir siopa agus ardBhean a’ Tí le Cúrsaí Gaeilge na Min Airde; agus Mick Prendiville, Eaglais, feirmeoir rathúil, agus laoch caide Lios Póil – pearsaí Féile Lios Póil 2025. Tréaslaimid a ngairm go geal leo beirt.
Lá an Pharóiste
’Sé’n Domhnach/Lá an Pharóiste buaic na Féile go traidisiúnta, agus b’amhlaidh arís i mblianta, agus Aifreann na Féile ina thús, a cheiliúir An tAth. Michael Ó Muineacháin, i gcuimhneamh míosa ar Dherorah Uí Dheargáin, mar a léigh Éilís Nic Gearailt guí phobail a leanas di: Guímid suaimhneas síoraí d’anam Dheborah Uí Dheargáin, a bhí ina realt geana is muintearais dá clann is dá cairde i gcónaí. Bhí Deborah dílis dá dúchas Gaelach, agus chuaigh sí i bhfeidhm le h-áthas is le barr cúraim ar na glúinte scolairí Gaeilge a bhí faoina díon le blianta fada i gCúrsaí Gaeilge na Min Airde A Thiarna éist linn!
Ina dhiaidh sin, bhí comhluadar láidir i láthair d’imeachtaí sa Halla, ina measc, d’Fheis Fhéile Lios Póil 2025. Comhghairdeas leis na rinceoirí óga go léir a ghlac páirt. Buaiteoirí, Fé 6: 1ú. Beirt eile ar tugadh sutas dóibh ’b’ea Sinéad Ní Mhuircheaertaigh agus Máirtín Ó Gráinne – Bean is Fear ab oiriúnaí gléasta.
Taispeántas Caorach
Níl aon amhras ná gurbh é an Taispeántas Caorach ba mhó a spreag spéis an chomhluadair sa ghort. Dar le Conor Ó hAiniféin, gurbh í seo an bhliain ab fhearr fós le breis is 200 caora istigh ar na comórtais éagsúla.
Buaiteoirí: Rannóg Sléibhe, urraithe ag Comharchumann Uan Chiarraí: James Farrell, Abhainn a’ Scáil; Rannóg ón dTalamh Íseal, urraithe ag Bernard Ó Súilleabháin, An Daingean: John Ó Muircheartaigh, Abhainn a’ Scáil. Buíochas leo siúd a d’eagraigh.

Cuireadh clabhsúr le h-imeachtaí an Domhnaigh san Ionad Pobail le rince seite. Bhí Halla John L. lán le rinceoirí fud fad Corca Dhuibhne agus fiú ó Chiarraí Theas. Triúr ógcheoltóir den scoth – Aisling Ní Chléirigh, Tadhg Ó Rínn agus Ronan Hussey ón mbuíon ceoil Sideways a sheinn dosna rinceoirí. Mairéad Uí Icí a stiúraigh na rincí seite go soiléir, agus Criostóir Ó hIcí a d’eagraigh le cúnamh óna dheartháir Noel. Cé go rabhas fhéin neamh-anamúil a’ siúl dtín Halla rince tar éis imeachtaí an lae, ní túisce cor seite curtha díom agam ná gur leáigh ar mo thuirse, ’gus d’fhill fuinneamh na h-óige in athuair orm – ar feadh scaithimhín! Is dóichí gurbh é seo an babhta déanach seite sa seanaHalla, agus b’é dea-ghuí rinceora amháin liom go mbeadh cláracha rince ar úrlár ar leithligh san Ionad Pobail athchóirithe – gur mian linn a leithéid, gan dabht.

Chicken, Lentil & Tomato Salad with Herb Dressing
Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School

Solar Systems
This Chicken, Lentil and Tomato Salad is a perfect example of how simple, fresh ingredients can shine when they’re at their best. Using locally grown salad leaves and sun-ripened tomatoes makes all the difference – the flavour is brighter, the texture is crisper, and you’re supporting growers right here in our community. Tender pieces of free-range chicken pair beautifully with earthy lentils, while the juicy sweetness of the tomatoes balances the peppery bite of fresh greens. A light herb dressing ties everything together, making this dish fresh, wholesome, and full of natural goodness. It’s ideal for a light lunch, a healthy dinner, or as part of a larger spread for family and friends. Best of all, it’s quick to prepare and can be made ahead, letting the flavours mingle for even more depth. This is local, seasonal eating at its most satisfying.
Ingredients
oil
2 chicken breasts
½ lemon
sprig of rosemary
1 shallot, diced
200g green lentils, washed
200-300ml stock
For the dressing
For the salad, Slice the chicken. In a large bowl, add some lentils, salad leaves, tomatoes, croutons. Add some salt and pepper, add some dressing and mix everything well.
Divide this between 4 bowls, add some slice chicken on top.
Bain Taitneamh As!!
Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.
A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.
There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!
Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump.
The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.
Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.
A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.
handful of herbs like, chives, parsley, thyme, all chopped finely 200ml extra virgin oil
½ tsp. Dijon mustard
70ml vinegar
For the rest of the salad handful of salad leaves, washed and dried handful of croutons
handful of tomatoes, diced salt and pepper
Method
To cook the chicken: season the chicken well with salt and pepper. Bring a pot of salted water to the boil. Add half a lemon and some rosemary. Turn the water down to a light simmer, add the chicken and allow to cook for about 15-20 minutes. If making this ahead of time allow the chicken to cool in the liquid.

New Book by John O’Connor DINGLE DAYS
Eggs and Rashers, Hay and Oats
32 West Kerry Live www.westkerrylive.ie
For the lentils: add a little oil and the shallot to a small pot over low to medium heat, cook for about 2 minutes. Add the lentils, stir well and add enough stock to cover the lentils well. Add more stock while it is cooking if you feel it needs some. Cook for about 20 minutes. Taste and check that they are cooked. Season well with salt and pepper.
For the dressing: mix the herbs, oil, mustard and vinegar together. Taste and season well.
DINGLE DAYS is a follow-up to John’s Children of the Shore (2020) which deals with growing up during poor times in Dingle in the 1950s and 1960s. This new book moves on from the challenging times of the middle decades of the 20th century and gives a view of the town after the film Ryan’s Daughter (1969) kickstarted a tourism boom and set it on a trajectory which transformed the town into a tourist mecca and changed its identity.
This work is strikingly in contrast with the Dingle described in Children of the Shore. Included are appendices relating to the businesses, activities and achievements of Dingle people. DINGLE DAYS is now available in Dingle book shops/outlets

Grow Remote is an Irish social enterprise whose mission is to make good quality jobs available to everyone, wherever they live - especially applicable to us in Corca Dhuibhne. The organisation helps workers find and thrive in remote jobs while also advocating on behalf of this sector. With more people working and wanting to work this way, there is an increasingly positive impact on rural societies. Jobs boards and more information on www.growremote.ie.
Potential downsides of working remotely include isolation, without colleagues next to you to share the load. To combat this, Grow Remote creates regular opportunities for remote workers to socialise and connect with each other. Towns across Ireland have local chapters with volunteer leaders setting up social events to enable locals meet-up. Aodán Ó Conaill & Liz Ryan are the Dingle Chapter leads, which is one of Ireland’s largest with circa 120 members, growing steadily every month. Other parts of Kerry have chapters too - remote workers can attend any chapter’s events. The Dingle chapter tries to do something different each month, taking advantage of the brilliant resources here. 2025 highlights: beginners yoga, making St Bridget’s crosses at Púca café, cheering on the Six Nations Rugby in Paddy Bawn’s, Craic in Neligan’s with Irish set dancing, making pendants with Celtic Coastal Creations and a killer-pool evening in Dingle Bridge House! We love working with local organisations and businesses - especially newer and small ones & we welcome collaboration ideas, especially in the outdoor pursuits area. Also open to considering volunteer efforts locally.
If you (or someone you know) is working without the perks of a traditional workplace, or if there’s someone who is curious if remote work is for them, encourage them to come along to our next event. (Hybrid workers also welcome.) It’s informal and friendly with new faces at each gathering. Yes, it’s hard to start something new and if you’re slow to join us, know that you will be welcomed in and handled with care.
We have a Whatsapp group for the Dingle network which is the best way to connect and hear first about events. To join: scan the QR code with your camera. To see our upcoming events, search www.eventbrite.ie for ‘Grow Remote’ in ‘Dingle’.

It's All In The Mind
Good news, Bad news, Who Knows?
Orla Smyth

There once was an old Zen farmer. Every day, the farmer used his horse to help work his fields and keep his farm healthy.
But one day, the horse ran away. All the villagers came by and said, “We're so sorry to hear this. This is such bad luck.”
But the farmer responded, “Bad luck. Good luck. Who knows?”
The villagers were confused, but decided to ignore him. A few weeks went by and then one afternoon, while the farmer was working outside, he looked up and saw his horse running toward him. But the horse was not alone. The horse was returning to him with a whole herd of horses. So now the farmer had 10 horses to help work his fields.
All the villagers came by to congratulate the farmer and said, “Wow! This is such good luck!”
But the farmer responded, “Good luck. Bad luck. Who knows?
A few weeks later, the farmer's son came over to visit and help his father work on the farm. While trying to tame one of the horses, the farmer’s son fell and broke his leg.

Beidh an t-iarrthóir idéalach ina altra cláraithe a bhfuil scileanna láidre cumarsáide agus idirphearsanta aici, atá in ann oibriú go neamhspleách agus mar chuid d’fhoireann. The villagers came by to commiserate and said, “How awful. This is such bad luck.”
Just as he did the first time, the farmer responded, “Bad luck. Good luck. Who knows?”
A month later, the farmer’s son was still recovering. He wasn’t able to walk or do any manual labor to help his father around the farm.
A regiment of the army came marching through town conscripting every able-bodied young man to join them. When the regiment came to the farmer’s house and saw the young boy's broken leg, they marched past and left him where he lay.
Of course, all the villagers came by and said, “Amazing! This is such good luck. You're so fortunate.”
And you know the farmer’s response by now… "Bad luck. Good luck. Who knows?
Life doesn’t always go according to plan and often things can turn out in the most unexpected way. Though we decide what outcome is good and what outcome is bad and then strive to achieve one and avoid the other, the truth is we can’t control or even predict what happens.
When we get what we want, we cling to it until we get the next thing that goes according to plan and when things don’t go our way we are overcome by disappointment and frustration. We end up constantly swimming upstream and struggling with life.
When we learn to stop coercing life to be exactly what we want it to be, we experience a greater fluidity and ease so that we can allow life to flow through us, both in sorrow and in joy. Being in the flow means acting from a wise and steady standpoint rather than a reactionary, fear based perspective. This position ultimately leads to better choices and decision making.
We do the best we can and then let go of the outcome. We never know what will ultimately prove to be good or bad news but we can choose to face it all with the equanimity and open heart of the Zen farmer.

Níl aon stad ná stáirse ag leanúint Trump. Tá an domhan á chúr trí chéile aige, ag gearradh dleachtanna gan deáramh mar a oireann dó. Tá sé ag bagairt ar Pútin ach níl aon dul chun cínn déanta aige. An rud is measa tá tiortha mar an Ind an tSín agus an Brasaoil ag cur suas leis agus ag tacú le Putin. Tíortha beaga á mbrú fé thalamh le dleachtanna gan chéill. Trump ag beartú comhlachtai atá ag feidhmiú in Éirinn a bhreith abhaile leis.
Tá a chosa tugtha ró fhada aige leis dar liom agus scata eile mar Putin. Tá suaimhneas ag teacht sa mhean oirthear pe faid a bheidh.

Chuir sé ionadh orm an onóir atá á tabhairt do Dhónal Ó Conaill. Bheartaidh na Sasanaigh tús an ochtú aois déag, an Ghaolainn a dhíothú. Nuair a bhíodh cruinnithe móra ag Ó Connaill le feirmeóirí le Gaolainn amhain bhídís i mBéarla cé gur Gaolainn a chéad theanga. Bheadh

Má tá éinne le moladh ‘sé Labhrás Ó Murchú é. Bhí ceol le hanama na marbh i Loch Garman ag Fleadh Ceoil na bliana. Bhí ardú croí ag baint leis an méid a chonaiceamair ar an dTeilifís. Is iontach an fhís a bhí ag Labhrás Ó Murchú a rinne méadú mór ar an bhFleadh Ceoil go bhfreastalaion na mílte míle ar. Sin fear nár a chás a mholadh, fiú is go raibh an fleadh ceoil ann roimhis. Ard fhear.
