The Dingle Food Festival is calling on Girls and Boys, up to the age of 14, to take part in their annual

"Great Daingean Uí Chúis Bake Off" The competition is a fun event open to all girls and boys who wish to bake a Marble Cake. No previous baking experience is required and the event is open to all amateur cooks. HOW THE EVENT WORKS: Once registered to take part in the bake off, all interested parties are asked to bake their marble cake. The selections must be baked by the entrant and brought to Dingle for judging on Sunday 4th of October at 11.00 am. Judging shall be carried out by local chefs in Dingle. Prizes are awarded to the winners 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The event shall take place in Dick Mack's Yard where their creation shall be displayed and judged. The competition results shall be announced at midday on Sunday 4th of October. Entry is €5 per baker and all proceeds will go to the charity of choice on the day. or kale ready for soups, eggs and casseroles. Blackberries, blackcurrants and plums provide protective anthocyanins and freeze beautifully. Gently simmer soft fruits with chia seeds to make a compote for porridge, yoghurt or granola. Gather plenty of colour across the week; nature rarely puts all her eggs in one basket and neither should we. Omega-3 fats help the body regulate inflammation and can be very helpful to our respiratory health. Oily fish such as sardines, mackerel, salmon and trout provide EPA and DHA, while walnuts, chia seeds and ground flaxseed provide the plant form, ALA. Research into omega-3 and asthma continues, with many positive studies . Keep tinned sardines or mackerel in the cupboard, add walnuts or flaxseed to porridge and include oily fish regularly — small habits repeated often matter most. Beans and lentils provide folate, iron, protein and fibre. We now know that gut bacteria communicate with the immune system and influence activity in the lungs via the so-called gut–lung axis - a fascinating modern echo of the traditional pairing of the Lungs and large intestine. Your microbiome thrives on a diverse diet of plants and fibre. Add red lentils to soup, butter beans to casseroles or replace some of the meat in a familiar dish with green or brown lentils.

There has been a definite shift in the air in the last week or so. Mornings are fresher, evenings are drawing in and some of you are already shaking out the woollies. Autumn has arrived — not according to any fixed date, but in the way we feel it around us.

Think of a well-stocked kitchen as a little Autumn insurance policy. Keep onions, garlic and root vegetables in the basket; lentils, beans, tinned tomatoes and oily fish in the cupboard; and greens, berries and homemade soup in the freezer. Add nuts, seeds, herbs and spices and you can assemble something nourishing quickly, even when time and energy are in short supply.

Traditional Chinese Medicine sees seasonal change as something that happens within us as well as around us, associating Autumn with the lungs and large intestine. We may view health through a different prism today, but the ancient connection remains timely: we move indoors, windows close and respiratory infections circulate more easily. Meanwhile, the plants, fruits and vegetables arriving now offer many of the nutrients needed by our lungs, respiratory system and large intestine.

Fluids help maintain the normal mucus secretions that trap dust, pollen and microorganisms in the respiratory tract. Water, herbal teas, broths and soups all count. A weekly pot of soup can deliver vegetables, herbs, fluid, fibre and protein in one bowl. Freeze a few portions of carrot, ginger and lentil soup, chicken broth or vegetable and bean stew now. They will be worth far more when you are unwell than ingredients waiting to be washed, peeled and chopped. Feed the freezer before it has to feed you.

For many Irish people, lung health is already a struggle. More than 450,000 people live with asthma, before we even consider COPD, bronchitis, pneumonia, chest infections and seasonal viruses. Food cannot guarantee an Autumn and Winter without illness, but it can provide nutrients that maintain the delicate linings of the nose, throat, lungs and digestive tract while supporting the immune system that patrols them. Rather than waiting until you are in the throes of an infection and panic-buying everything labelled “immune”, begin stocking your kitchen now with foods that give the body the best chance to do what it already knows how to do. Luckily, Mother Nature is throwing many of them at us right now.

Vitamin D also comes back into the conversation as daylight diminishes. It supports normal immune function but is difficult to obtain from food alone. Oily fish, egg yolks and fortified foods provide some, but it is worth checking your vitamin D levels and optimizing your status now and throughout the winter months.

Carrots, pumpkins, butternut squash and sweet potatoes get their orange colour from beta-carotene, a carotenoid that the body converts into vitamin A. Vitamin A helps maintain the mucous membranes lining the nose, lungs and digestive tract. These moist, protective surfaces form part of our first line of defence, trapping unwanted particles and microorganisms before they travel farther into the body. Vitamin A also supports normal immune function and, of course, eye health. This week, add butternut squash, carrots or sweet potatoes to the shopping basket. Roast a tray with olive oil, black pepper and herbs, then use the leftovers in a salad or blend with stock, ginger and red lentils for soup. One bit of preparation, several meals and plenty of Autumn colour. Autumn’s warming, pungent flavours include onions, garlic, leeks, ginger, chilli, rosemary, thyme and turmeric. Traditionally used to move stagnation and clear congestion, science now shows that many contain antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial compounds. Garlic, in particular, has demonstrated antiviral activity and may well help us resist infection. Long before we could name these compounds, we understood which foods helped protect, nourish and restore us. A very practical thing to do is soften a large pan of onions, leeks, garlic and ginger, divide it into small portions and freeze it. You then have the beginning of a soup, curry, casserole or pasta sauce ready to go. It is much easier to eat well on a wet Wednesday evening when someone has already peeled the onions — even if that someone was you last Sunday. Dark greens such as kale, cabbage, broccoli and spinach provide vitamin C, folate, magnesium and carotenoids involved in immune protection and tissue repair. Of course, nutrition is only one part of looking after our lungs. Fresh air, ventilation, movement, sleep, handwashing, not smoking and following medical advice all matter. Still, there is something reassuring about the foods appearing just when we need them and having a well-stocked kitchen to protect, repair and regulate our defences. There is a reason for every season. Autumn is inviting us to cook a little more, slow down a little and pay attention to the parts of ourselves that work quietly in the background. Once Upon a Time in the Southwest Ted Creedon Lifeboat Torpedoed -Ballymoney Free Press 09 September 1915 Members of the crew of the Cymbaline, which was torpedoed off the Kerry coast recently, state that their lifeboat, on which seven crew members attempted to escape, was also torpedoed and five of the men on board were killed. The vessel had been shelled and several of the crew had been killed or injured.

(There’s something odd about this story. If the Cymbaline had been torpedoed and shelled it meant that the submarine was on the surface. Why didn’t they shell the lifeboat? No official records of this incident found.)

Listowel Petty Sessions Sergeant Byrne summoned Lizzie Sheeahan, of Finuge, for allowing her donkey, with car attached, to wander in the public street. Chairman to defendant – what have you to say? Defendant – I have nothing to say, only that I didn’t summons the police when they took my ass and cart off the public street six weeks ago to the barrack and then to the workhouse (laughter) with some class of a character of a woman in it (more laughter). Sergeant Costello – It was a drunken woman, your worship, who was wounded by a fall that we took to the hospital in the defendant’s car. It was the nearest vehicle to hand and the police commandeered it. The Chairman, in finding the defendant a shilling, said they did not, up to the present, like to put heavy penalties in such cases but should do so in the future as there was now much more danger from wandering animals than formerly owing to the numbers of motor cars on the roads.

Castlegregory Drowning -Kerry Reporter 25 August 1916 Sir, the report on a drowning which appeared in Monday’s issue of Kerry News is not quite accurate. The names of the following persons who recovered the body were omitted: Rev. O’Sullivan, Constables Brophy, Gogerty and Darling, Petty Officer Spencer, R.N. and local Superintendent John Fitzgerald. They searched for the body and on finding it tried artificial respiration methods. It is rumoured that the drowning occurred in Castlegregory Lake or in Brandon Bay. This is incorrect. It occurred in Tralee Bay and is the first drowning in Castlegregory in 53 years. There was never, within memory, any person drowned bathing in the Castlegregory side of Brandon Bay. Needless to say, there was never a drowning in Castlegregory Lake. Any person familiar with the lake knows it to be the safest in the United Kingdom. (That’s quite a claim!)

the Cashen Ferry, the property of Fredrick Mason. On Sunday night last another outrage was committed against the same individual, in the same district. A valuable cow was slaughtered, and the carcase was taken away leaving the head and hide on the very spot where the unfortunate beast was killed. (Houghed – pronounced hocked – refers to the cutting of the tendons of the hind legs, thus crippling the victim.)

Dingle Bench Declaration -Kerry Reporter

28 October 1916

The Dingle Magistrates have made it a rule to adjourn no cases in future more than once. Cases are being adjourned three and four times, and the practice is seen as inconvenient and unsatisfactory. We don’t know if Magistrates elsewhere will approve of the decision by the Dingle Bench. It is possible that important places such as Tralee and Killarney, and even Listowel, will refuse to be guided by Dingle but if Dingle is correct, the views expressed in Tralee or Killarney need not trouble our Western friends.

Dingle Petty Sessions -Kerry News 22 September 1916 Sergeant Moore summoned Patrick Sulivan for being drunk in a public place. Defendant was fined two shillings and sixpence and bound to the peace for six months. Head constable Downes summoned another man for being drunk in Main Street. He was fined two shillings and sixpence plus costs, but the Head constable wasn’t finished. There was a second summons by him for assault. Complainant stated that when he arrested the defendant he made three attempts to attack him and he had to knock him down three times. Defendant claimed he had no knowledge or recollection regarding any attempted assault. The bench wasn’t impressed and sentenced him to one month in prison with hard labour.

More Potatoes than Needed -Cork Examiner 17 August 1846 We have as many potatoes now in the country as would supply half as many more of the popula-

tion we have. I am happy to inform you that we may expect the most abundant crop of potatoes we have seen since the Great Famine. Having within the past fortnight travelled along the west coast, from Clare to Kerry, I can tell you that this will be a great year for potato crops. There is no sign of blight anywhere. The coasts of Dingle and Caherciveen were the first in Ireland to show signs of blight and generally showed it a fortnight sooner than any other part of Ireland. The weather is still glorious. The harvest is being cut in several places. The heart of the population is up again, and you hear the ringing laughs in the farmyards as of olden days.

Cruel Death of a Cat -Kerry Reporter 03 April 1897 Sergeant Lockhart summoned a young fellow named John Flaherty for cruelty to a cat. Complainant – The defendant is guilty of cruelty to a cat. Colonel Rowen – It is not for you to say who is guilty or not. Tell us what occurred. The complainant said he found defendant and other boys chasing a cat in upper Rock Street (Tralee). Defendant had a whip and was beating the cat with it. He was also kicking the cat and set a dog on it. The dog dragged the cat down a channel (?). The cat came back later to its owner but died the following day. The defendant, on being questioned on what he had to say replied he had nothing to say. You ought to get a jolly good hiding, Colonel Rowen said. Mr. Sandes said he ought to get the cat. Colonel Rowan – You are fined ten shillings and sixpence or two weeks in prison. (There was no report on what option he took. Mr. Sandes’ comment that the defendant ‘should get the cat’ referred to the use of a form of whip called the ‘cat and nine tails. This implement was used to whip prisoners and was also in common use in the naval and military services. It had a thick handle attached to nine thongs or cords.)

The Dingle Heartsafe Group invite members of the public to a Hands For Life workshop in Sacred Heart University on Monday September 14th commencing at 7pm. The session will include essential life saving skills like CPR and how to use a defibrillator in a handson situation. The session takes approximately 90 minutes and all donations go to the Group's costs in maintaining local defibrillators and emergency call out expenses. DINGLE MARATHON. Over 3,000 people took part in the 16th Annual Half and Full Dingle Marathons held around the scenic Slea Head Course on Saturday last. The organisers wish to express their sincere gratitude to the residents, motorists, business operators, and road users for their wonderful co-operation before, during and after the event again this year. They also thank all the participants, stewards, supporters, Gardaí, medical support teams and professional service operators all of whom ensured the 16th marathons lived up to the high standards reached in the previous years. A new course record was set by a young lady from Boston who also finished an amazing third place in the full race improving the previous record by over 5 minutes. The Marathon weekend is certainly one of the best weekends in the Peninsula from both an economical and social viewpoint with many local organisations rewarded with donations for their help in the smooth running of such a major undertaking. COMMEMORATIVE WALK. A Commemorative Walk in memory of Aisling Joyce and Mary Lynch will be held on Saturday September 12th beginning at 3.30pm at The Marina Car Park. Belated congratulations to the young athletes, their parents, coaches and all involved in the Dingle Community Games Group on their recent success at the National Community Games Finals in Carlow. Pity we were not alert enough to realise that the two large halls attached to the Monastery and Convent schools which served as community facilities for many years were not to be replaced by the religious orders when they fell into poor repair. Now we hear of almost every other community in the country having their own hall or similar such facility which are the envy of many here in Dingle. Recent conversations with a number of local people would lead me to believe there is increasing interest in our community getting together to do something about planning for such a facility and not just complain about it. Let's get the discussion started before it is too late especially as we have a really talented group of young and not so young people with sporting , cultural and artistic interests without a facility to call their own community building.

Life's A Breeze When You're Planting Trees Friends, we are living through crazy times! We live in a beautiful part of the world, in a country of unimaginable prosperity, and we enjoy freedom and peace to boot. And yet, in so many ways, we appear to be always on the brink of tipping into turmoil. The chaos of climate change approaches us inevitably and we seem powerless to stop our collective drift into it. Nature, that tangled web of life that sustains our civilization, continues to be diminished, slipping away to leave us impoverished in body and spirit. As the screws of change turn on us, stress is everywhere, and we feel more divided, less able to work together. It can be really hard to know what we can do. One simple action I have found is so very powerful that it has sort of taken me over! Like others, I have discovered we can do something that helps reverse our carbon profligacy, supercharges the regeneration of our natural world, connects people and brings peace. Let me tell you about the miracle of planting trees…. Carbon (guilt) guzzler Trees do the magic of photosynthesis on a massive scale. They sequester Carbon Dioxide, and give back food and oxygen in return. But the amount that trees do this is really surprising. An average Irish person puts out 10 Tonnes of C02 per year (a good bit more than the rest of Europe). Even as we try to reduce this, we inevitably will put out a few tonnes of C02 per year for the time being. Trees take C02 out of the air most while they are young, and every acre of trees can take about 2.5 tonnes of CO2 every year. It does a lot of good – and makes you feel good too! A turbo booster for nature Trees are the skeleton of the natural world. As native trees grow in size

they support a vast network of other plants, insects , birds and animals. They regulate the ecosystem around them, with their leaves, and shade. They store up water in times of drought and drink it up when we’ve too much. They enrich the soil beneath and around them, slowing run off and enriching the soil. Once you allow trees to establish nature quickly builds up around them – it doesn’t need much more help! A boost for humans too! I have noticed in myself, and also among our group of tree planters, Meitheal na gCrann, the wonder and peace we feel when we look after trees. There is something really soothing about being around trees, even if you are only pulling grass or trying to identify them. Often we end up working together, and it is a real bonding experience working together with neighbours or landowners to do something so positive and pleasing. Trees have always been a big part of humans life and culture, and reconnecting with them reminds us why.. As you learn to identify them you feel more and more connected to this place we live. Improving the land and protecting us in Corca Dhuibhne Trees will play an increasingly important role in keeping us safe from the worst of storms, droughts and floods. Soil quality and productivity can be improved through clever planting on farmland (with good grants for this that keep all your farm payments and practices!). And rivers too, benefit from proper planting – both to slow flooding and protect fish and water life. They help us right here at home. Come join us this winter! This winter will be our fourth year embarking on tree planting together- to date we have planted almost 30,000 trees in Corca Dhuibhne . If you have a patch at the edge of your farm, or garden, of know someone who might be interested please get in touch. We have a bunch of merry volunteers who have helped a number of farmers planting hedgerows or woodlands at a time when lambing and calving is taking up their time. Formerly a lecturer in Maynooth University and a secondary teacher, he is currently Commissioning Editor with Mentor/Red Stag Books. Gregory Peck Dingle Classic Film Society Gregory Peck Dingle Classic Film Society begins its tenth season of classic films on SEPT 17, 2026, in St James Church with Lilies of the Field. A screening of Cry of the Innocent will take place in Halla Le Chéile, Brandon on SEPT 25, 2026. Both films are fundraisers and open to the public. The full program of Season 10 films is being sent to the membership. Following our previous season, GPDCFS contributed funds to the refurbishment of St. James' Church and to the RNLI. The Society thanks the membership for their ongoing support which helps to keep cinema alive in Dingle and enables it to support local charitable organisations. A Brief History Of The Marathon Micheál Ó Coileáin

The marathon is a long-distance footrace first held at the revival of the Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. It commemorates the legendary feat of a Greek soldier who, in 490BC, is supposed to have run from Marathon to Athens, a distance of about 40 km (25 miles), to bring news of the Athenian victory over the Persians and then promptly dropped dead from the exertion! Appropriately, in 1896 the first modern marathon winner was a Greek, Spyridon Louis. The Battle of Marathon, fought in 490 BCE, was a pivotal conflict between the Persian Empire and the city-state of Athens, located around 25 miles from the city centre. The Persian forces, commanded by Datis and Artaphernes, aimed to punish Athens for its support of the Ionian Revolt against Persian rule. The Athenians, with a force of approximately 11,000, faced a Persian army that outnumbered them by at least two to one. Under the leadership of Miltiades, the Athenians employed a strategic formation that weakened their center while strengthening their flanks, allowing them to decisively defeat the Persian forces. The battle resulted in significant Persian casualties, with reports indicating around 6,400 deaths compared to 192 for the Greeks. This victory not only fostered Athenian pride but also marked a crucial moment in the struggle against Persian expansion. The aftermath of the battle solidified Athens' status and bolstered its democratic ideals, with its veterans celebrated as heroes. The significance of Marathon resonates in historical memory, symbolizing resistance against overwhelming odds and the fight for self-determination In 1924 the Olympic marathon distance was standardized at 42,195 meters (26 miles 385 yards). This was based on a decision of the British Olympic Committee to start the 1908 Olympic race from Windsor Castle and finish it in front of the royal box in the stadium at London – all to please the Queen! The marathon was added to the women’s Olympic program in 1984. In 2026 Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe became the first runner to finish an official marathon in under two hours when he completed the London Marathon with a time of 1 hour 59 minutes 30 seconds. The fastest female marathon time in history is 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 56 seconds, set by Ruth Chepngetich of Kenya at the Chicago Marathon in 2024. Around 25,000 to 30,000 people complete a full marathon in Ireland each year, and between 2500 - 3,000 runners recently completed the Dingle Half and Full marathon. The full Dingle marathon features around 481 meters (approx. 1,580 feet) of total elevation gain, making it significantly hillier than standard flat marathons. Both the youngest and oldest marathon runners in the world are of Indian origin. The former is Budhia Singh, who had completed 48 marathons before his fifth birthday. The latter is Canada’s Fauja Singh. He completed the 8 hours, 11 minutes, and 6 seconds of the marathon at the age of 100!

Pork Meatballs with Sage, Cider Sauce Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School

For the cider sauce 1 onion, finely sliced 1 apple, peeled, cored and sliced 1 tbsp plain flour 250ml dry cider 250ml chicken stock 1 tsp Dijon mustard 100ml cream 6–8 fresh sage leaves salt and freshly ground black pepper Method

September is one of those months when the kitchen begins to change. The evenings are getting a little cooler, but we are not quite ready for the heavier dishes of winter. Pork, apples and sage are a combination that works particularly well at this time of year, and a dry cider makes a lovely base for a simple sauce. For these meatballs, try to use good-quality pork mince with a little fat in it, as very lean mince can make them dry. Browning the meatballs properly is important as all those caramelised bits left in the pan add flavour to the sauce. Serve them with creamy mashed potatoes and, if you like, some buttered cabbage or greens. Serves 4

Put the pork mince, onion, garlic, chopped sage, breadcrumbs, egg and mustard into a bowl. Season well with salt and pepper and mix everything together. Shape into approximately 16 meatballs. Heat a large frying pan or shallow casserole over a medium-high heat, once hot add a little oil. Brown the meatballs well on all sides. You do not need to cook them completely at this stage. Remove them from the pan and set aside. Reduce the heat slightly and add the sliced onion to the same pan. Cook for 5–6 minutes until softened. Add the apple and cook for another 2 minutes. Stir in the flour and cook for about a minute. Gradually pour in the cider, stirring and scraping all the flavour from the bottom of the pan. Add the chicken stock and mustard and bring to a gentle simmer. Return the meatballs to the pan, cover loosely and simmer for 15–20 minutes, until the pork is completely cooked through and the sauce has reduced slightly.

Ingredients

When the meatballs are cooked, stir the cream into the sauce and simmer gently for another 2–3 minutes. Check the seasoning.

For the meatballs

In a small frying pan, fry the sage leaves in a little butter or oil until crisp.

Divide the meatballs between 4 four bowls and plenty of the cider sauce. Finish with the crisp sage leaves. Serve with creamy mash potato.

ÉIRE Sign 40 and Lookout Post 40 Paddy O'Neill Looking back at our history during the Second World War, Ireland, though neutral, did assist the Allies with the construction of ÉIRE signs and building Lookout Posts. In Corca Dhuihne, ÉIRE sign 40 is located near Brandon Point and close to Sás Creek. Lookout Post 40 is located near Brandon Point and just a few minutes walk from the carpark. There were 83 ÉIRE signs and 83 Lookout posts around the entire coastline. They were built in 1939 following the handover of the Treaty Ports in 1938. Irish coastal waters were unprotected after the Treaty. The Marine and Coast Watching Service was set up in 1939 to remedy this situation. The network of ÉIRE signs was designed to signal Ireland’s neutral status to aircraft, particularly allied pilots flying to Europe. They also acted as navigation markers. The Lookout Posts were built and manned by members of the Local Defence Force (LDF) and local volunteers.

The Coastwatchers were responsible for identifying and reporting on shipping and aircraft movements and also on any communications between ship and shore. Mick Brick from Brandon was one of the men who manned LOP 40 at Brandon Point (Srón Bhroin). The Brandon Post had an eight man team, with the men working shifts to observe activity on the coast.

In September 2024 the location of ÉIRE Sign 40 at Brandon was identified by local farmers. It was totally covered with earth and growth. It was shown to members of Forbairt Cosáin Siúil an Leithriúigh (Local Walking Development Group). The Walking Development group, with the assistance of 20 local volunteers uncovered the ÉIRE sign in September 2024. Each of the individual letters are 12 meters in length and 2 meters wide. It was discovered that the last E of the ÉIRE sign had been damaged, probably due to erosion and weathering. MANX SHEARWATER ALERT! SOS Shearwater Corca Dhuibhne is appealing to everyone on the Dingle Peninsula these next few weeks to be on the lookout for stranded Manx Shearwater fledglings.

What are they? They are dove-sized, web-footed black and white seabirds that breed on the Blasket Islands. During the next few weeks this year’s fledglings are making their first big migration to the waters off Brazil and Uruguay where they will spend the winter months.

Why are they stranding in our towns and villages? They are attracted and disoriented by the strong electric lights with which we surround ourselves. Once they crash land on roads and in gardens they are vulnerable to predation by pets, starvation and being hit by traffic.

Five good reasons to get involved

What can you do if you find one? Please pick it up carefully and avoid catching by the wings by cupping your hands around it. Place it securely in a cardboard box. Do not give it any food or water and phone one of the volunteers listed below who will collect it and release it safely back to the wild. 1. Manx Shearwaters are long-lived birds. The oldest ringed and recovered bird was 52 years old. By picking up and helping one bird you might be helping dozens of generations of shearwaters yet to come! 2. The shearwaters’ parents have travelled all the way from South America to the safe breeding colony on the Blasket Islands in order to lay one single egg which they incubate for up to 55 days after which they feed the fledgling for a further 60-70 days. That’s a big effort for this protected, amber-listed little bird. It seems a small effort on our part to pick it up and release it again safely to give it one more chance of finding its way south. 3. Usually they are entirely uninjured and just need a little help to get airborne again. 4. We have very few opportunities to get up close and personal with some of our more elusive wildlife. Shearwater can generally only be observed far out to sea from a boat as they breed underground on our remoter islands and only come back to their breeding burrows at night. About 93% of the Irish population of this amazing seabird breed in County Kerry. This is a great chance for everyone to find out a little bit more about the great biodiversity here on the Dingle peninsula and to help in a small but very effective way to protect it. 5. We are hoping to ring some Shearwaters this year, thereby adding some valuable scientific data to the rescue scheme. Last but not least let’s consider switching off some unnecessary outside lights to prevent these birds from crash landing in the first place. Last year we collected and released more than 120+ birds around the peninsula – thanks to all the people around the peninsula who picked them up and gave us a call. Some people even carried an empty cardboard box in their cars just in case they came across one of them. Thank you!

Handel's Messiah Raises Much Needed Funds For An Díseart Handel's Messiah of 1741 was first performed in Dublin in 1742. Its popularity has grown since then and today it's one of the best-known and most frequently performed choral works in Western music. On the 11th of December 2025, it reached pastures new and in partnership with An Díseart, its melodies and message brought festive cheer, joy and inspiration to Dingle's festive season. We feel privileged and grateful that Magella Hollywood and Gerry Keenan listened to Berniann Condon's promptings and steered Chamber Choir Ireland and the Irish Chamber Orchestra, under the baton of Gabriel Crouch, to Dingle for a memorable night. The occasion could not have happened without the generosity of Tomás and Jim Garvey, who, through the generosity of the Garvey Group, hosted the Choir and Orchestra in Dingle. Fr. Michael Moynihan, P.P., accommodated the event in St. Mary's, Green St. and provided enthusiastic support in the initial stages of planning. Thanks also to Údarás na Gaeltachta, Fenton's restaurant, Róisín and Clare, the church decorators, the organising committee and Pádraig Ó Sé, fear a'tí who gave a memorable introduction to the night in his own inimitable style. We are grateful to all who supported the fundraiser, which realised €14,600 to contribute to the decorative restoration of The Chapel of The Sacred Heart in the Díseart. This neo-Gothic gem was completed in 1922 -1924. As the Irish State came of age Mother Ita Macken commissioned Harry Clarke to add 12 stained glass panels to the chapel to celebrate the historic event. Today the windows speak to us with clarity, order, harmony and mystery as the light filters through their vibrant colours. They stand to remind us of the remarkable contribution made by the Presentation Sisters here to enable recovery from the devastating and tragic famine years. The convent and its artistic treasures have a special place in the hearts of Dingle people; it must surely be regarded as a national mon-

West Kerry Students Nominated For Garda Youth Award Students from Meán Scoil Nua an Leith Triúigh, Castlegregory, are celebrating after the school’s GoWild and Shoreline Shapers initiatives were jointly named winners of a Group Award at the 2026 An Garda Síochána Kerry Division Youth Awards, sponsored by Lee Strand. The two Transition Year groups were nominated jointly by Principal Karen Blennerhassett in recognition of the exceptional contribution the students have made to environmental protection, education and community life in West Kerry. The winning GoWild team comprised Jarlath Malachy Wruck, Grace Boland, Aoife Flynn, Darragh Goodwin, Saoirse Brosnan and Beatrice Dowling. The Shoreline Shapers team comprised Grace Stanney, Jess Jackson, Loe Wessels, Nina May Wagner MacManus, Christina Ní Chorchora, Alanna Griffin, Emily Boland and Conor Rohan. The projects were led and supported by Principal Karen Blennerhassett and Ms Ilona Dowd. What began with local beach cleans developed into a far-reaching environmental initiative encompassing conservation, education, art, public speaking and advocacy. Working with organisations including Maharees Conservation Association, Flossie and the Beach Cleaners, IEP Waters and MTU Tralee, the students organised beach cleans along the West Kerry coastline, removing marine waste while raising awareness of pollution, biodiversity and the need to protect the area's unique coastal environment. The students then found an innovative way to give some of that marine waste a new purpose. Rubbish collected from local beaches was transformed into striking sculptures representing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including Life Below Water, Climate Action and Sustainable Cities and Communities. Their work was subsequently showcased at exhibitions and events including Féile na Bealtaine, Fossa Sustainability Fair, the European PHAROS/ Grand Canaria Mega Event at MTU and Dingle Tourist Office, bringing considerable positive attention to youth-led environmental action in West Kerry.

Following engagement with the Office of Catherine Connolly, the students were invited to Áras an Uachtaráin, where they presented information packs about their environmental projects. We had the opportunity to work on our own pieces, aswell as work together and some of these will be on display in An Stiúideo on Culture Night, the 18th of September. Dingle Peninsula Tourism Named EU’s CIRCULATOUR Project Partner in Planning for the Peninsula’s Sustainable Future

Congratulations to the Dingle Marathon team for another great weekend with participants coming from far and wide and to all the volunteers who helped along the way. Míle buíochas gach éinne. Great news to hear that Éilís Ní Chinnéide will represent not only Corca Dhuibhne but also Ireland at the Tocati Festival in Verona, Italy – 18th to 20th September. Éilís will perform at events throughout the Festival in Verona and Venice. Each year the festival hosts a guest country and this year Ireland is the cultural showcase as part of Ireland’s Presidency of the European Union. Comhghairdeachas Éilís agus go n-éirí leat. Coming up on September 20th is the traditional Camp Sheep Fair, a firm favourite too with so many with the Irish Doctor’s Orchestra Charity Concert taking place in St. Mary’s Church for Kerry Hospice on the 27th September. Plans are racing ahead too with the Blas na hÉireann Awards and Dingle Food Festival taking place from 2nd October until Sunday 4th. Go n-éirí libh. Turasóireacht Chorca Dhuibhne / Dingle Peninsula Tourism has been named an Irish partner on the EU Co-funded Interreg programme CIRCULATOUR that focuses on Low-waste and resource-smart tourism for NPA (Northern Periphery and Arctic) communities. The Dingle Peninsula becomes one of five NPA destinations acting as living laboratories to pilot solutions for a circular, resource-efficient tourism economy with sustainable tourism practices to adapt to climate-related change. Other partnering countries in this 30-month programme include Finland, Sweden, Iceland and Greenland. CIRCULATOUR encompasses a 30-month programme to develop, test and transfer practical solutions that improve visitor flow management, reduce resource use and support adaptation of the tourism community to changing tourism patterns. CIRCULATOUR will deliver three key goals: a visitor flow-prediction model, circular smart destination maps, and ways to strengthen the capacity to adapt for climate change and resource sufficiency in NPA communities. These transferable circular tourism guidelines will benefit authorities, destination management organisations, as well as micro-, small- and medium-sized businesses, communities and their visitors.

The lead project partner is South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences. The total project cost is €1.249 million, of which Dingle Peninsula Tourism will be allocated €123,500 towards the implementation of the programme. The project duration is 30 months from September 1, 2026 – February 28, 2029. What job(s) are you most proud of? At the moment I am most proud of my most recent shoot Phone Lines. It’s not easy making films and it’s even harder to make films in the most westerly place in Ireland. West Kerry is an amazing place and I am proud to be making films here. Hopefully local people can connect with them too. What’s your process? How do you get into a role/project and how do you work? My process is taking my most personal memories and anxieties and trying to find a metaphor or tell a story through them. My work is personal but I prefer for the characters to be quite different than me. I love the research of learning about different people and communities. Writing can be a great way to put yourself in the shoes of another person and develop empathy. What advice would you give to anyone wanting to get into the film industry? (or best advice you got?) My best advice is to make mistakes. Filmmaking and creativity is about heartbreak. It’s about putting your heart and soul into a piece of work and it going absolutely nowhere. The more heartbreak and rejection you face, the more you’ll stop chasing success and start making art truly for yourself. Awards are nice but the memories and lessons learned making the art is worth more. It’s easier said than done though and I’m learning this lesson every day. Three must-see films for anyone interested in filmmaking and why?

Tell us about yourself Hello, my name is Cian. I am a writer and director, born and raised in Dingle town. How did you get into the film industry? When I was a child, my brother and I used to make films on an old digital camera my Dad bought me for Christmas. I remember my sister Niamh telling me we could be the next Coen Brothers and realizing filmmaking could be a career and not just a hobby. I don’t think I was even old enough to watch a Coen Brothers’ film at that time but the seed was planted from there and I haven’t stopped since. Thanks Niamh! What inspired you to want to work in film? (film, tv programme, actor, etc.) and what inspires/motivates you from day to day in your work? What inspires me is being able to process my interior thoughts and feelings into a piece of art. I think there’s a lot of healing in creativity. It could have been music or acting but film was what stuck. Filmmaking is quite stressful though. It can cost a lot of money and requires a larger team than making music or novel writing. However, it’s the connections you make with your crew and the teamwork producing the film that makes all of the stress worth it. I've learned it's the memories of making the films that have much more lasting value than the film itself. What was your first job in film and what have you worked on since? My first job in film was working as a runner on the film Jimmy’s Hall and embarrassing myself in front of Ken Loach. What are you working on at the moment? Upcoming projects? I just wrapped my latest short film. It’s called Phone Lines. We shot it on 16mm film in Lios Pól and I had an amazing local team working on it with me. It’s a short fiction about loneliness and connection in West Kerry and will be released on the festival circuit next year. The support from

Three films is too hard. If you’re interested in filmmaking I’d suggest diving into the influences of the directors that inspire you. If you like Sofia Coppola, watch Ozu. If you like Scorsese, try Fellini etc. My favorite film about filmmaking is this very 90s documentary called American Movie. My sister and brother love it too. The draw for the semi final of the Premier Junior County Football Championship pitched near neighbours and local rivals Annascaul and Keel together in an interesting West Kerry/Mid Kerry clash in Austin Stack Park. A goal near the end of first half was a key turning point in game and gave Keel a clear lead. They never looked back after that, and try as they might Annascaul could not catch up.
