Strawberry Fields…for Another While Yet Irene Flannery

fruit called an achene, containing its own seed. A strawberry may carry around 200 of them — a crowd of little fruits pretending to be one. Its botany may be complicated, but nutritionally the strawberry is refreshingly straightforward. It is mostly water, relatively low in natural sugar and provides fibre along with an impressive amount of vitamin C. Vitamin C supports normal collagen formation in the skin, blood vessels, bones and connective tissues, helps the immune system function normally and improves our absorption of iron from plant foods. Strawberries also contain anthocyanins, ellagic acid and other polyphenols, the naturally occurring plant compounds responsible for much of their colour and some of their protective qualities. Research continues into their possible role in cardiovascular and metabolic health, although, as ever, the benefit comes from eating them as part of a varied diet rather than treating the punnet as a prescription. Their high water content is welcome in warmer weather, while their vitamin C supports normal collagen formation at a time when our skin may be getting more sun and exposure. Not, obviously, as a substitute for sunscreen, but as one useful part of the summer diet.

The first local strawberries always seem to mark the real beginning of summer, and for a few weeks we remember what strawberries are actually meant to taste like. By now, that first flush of excitement has passed, Wimbledon has packed away the whites along with the strawberries and cream, yet somehow we are still finding delicious Irish strawberries in the shops and at roadside stalls. Perhaps the warm spell helped some of them along, although heat is not always the strawberry grower’s friend. The plants are shallow-rooted and can struggle when the ground becomes too dry. Our extended season owes as much to careful growing, protective tunnels and modern varieties that fruit later or keep producing throughout the summer. Whatever the reason, we are not complaining. A good strawberry in late July still deserves our full attention. For centuries, people in Europe gathered tiny wild or woodland strawberries, Fragaria vesca, from hedgerows, woodland edges and grassy banks. They are the same little perennial strawberries still found in many Irish gardens today: small, intensely fragrant and apparently worth the effort of stooping for, although gathering enough for to fill a punnet must have required more patience than most of us now possess. Charming as these little strawberries are, they are not the direct equivalent of the large, plump fruit we buy today. The modern strawberry came from a much more adventurous history, involving two continents, a spy and a trip across the pond.

They also play well with the other foods around us now. Their vitamin C helps us absorb more of the iron from leafy greens, lentils and beans, while yoghurt, oats, nuts and seeds make them part of a more sustaining breakfast. Alongside blackcurrants, raspberries and cherries, they add another mixture of colourful plant compounds to the plate. Nature rarely puts all her good ideas into one food, which is why variety matters far more than chasing whichever fruit happens to be fashionable this week. Of course, there is no need to make every strawberry work for its nutritional living. Eat them straight from the punnet, preferably at room temperature, and do not even think about what they are doing for you. Add yoghurt or cream, crush them onto good bread, or leave them briefly with a little lemon juice and black pepper. Wexford strawberries may be enjoying a particularly good season and are used to hogging the strawberry limelight, but our own locally grown fruit can be every bit as memorable when picked ripe and eaten close to home. Unlike the French spy, I thought I had missed the boat with this strawberry story, but the person who suggested it was right. The first fruits may get all the ceremony and Wimbledon may be over, yet there is still plenty of the strawberry season left to enjoy. During the 1500s, the Virginia strawberry, native to eastern North America, was brought to Europe. It was sweet and flavoursome, but still quite small. Then, nearly two hundred years later, a French naval officer and spy named Amédée-François Frézier travelled to Chile to check out what the Spanish were getting up to there . While taking notes on harbours, cannons and military defences, he also noticed that local people were growing unusually large strawberries. This may be the only time espionage has made a meaningful contribution to dessert. Frézier brought several Chilean strawberry plants back to France. The Ooh-la-las for the large fruit was soon hushed as the plants did not initially perform very well. However, the Chilean strawberry soon crossed the Virginian strawberry in European gardens – et voila! A plant combining size, flavour and productivity. That hybrid, Fragaria × ananassa, became the ancestor of most cultivated strawberries grown today. What the wild strawberry lacks in size, it often makes up for in perfume; one tiny fruit can smell more convincingly of strawberries than an entire supermarket punnet bought out of season. Strawberries were once valued for more than their fruit. The leaves and roots of wild strawberries were brewed as teas in European herbal traditions, largely because their tannins gave them an astringent quality, while the fruit appeared in syrups, preserves and skin remedies. Strawberry juice even found its way into the beauty routines of pale, well-to-do ladies hoping for a fresher complexion. Yet perhaps the most curious thing about the strawberry is not how people used it, but what it actually is. Botanically speaking, it is not a berry at all. It is more closely related to raspberries and blackberries, although the part we eat develops a little more like an apple. Once Upon a Time in the Southwest

An accident, which almost ended in a fatality, occurred in Cloghane ten days ago. As Mr. Jeremiah Corkery, of Brandon, accompanied by Michael Twohy, of Cloghane, were casting the anchor of the fishing boat Lizzy from a canoe, one of the wings of the anchor caught in the gunwale. As the two men attempted to release it they were both off balance and thrown into the water.

No Races or Regatta in Dingle -The Kerryman 17 September 1904 Fate seems to be doing her worst in the matter of offering encouragement to the lovers of sport in Dingle. Yet, there are sweet dreams of the Dingle Races which she cannot destroy. No races have been held for the past few years. We are not aware of any insurmountable obstacles associated with them. One good day under the National Hunt would be thoroughly appreciated. The same may be said for the Dingle Regatta which has not been held for the past two years. Lady Day, September 8th, now ranks as an ordinary day from a festive point of view. Some twenty-five or thirty years ago it was a Gala Day in Dingle. The town formed the centre of entertainment for the rural folks, and an enjoyable time was experienced in street dancing and other amusements.

Death of a Centenarian -Kerry Evening Post 13 November 1895 On Wednesday last an old man named Timothy Casey, aged 102 years, born in 1793, died at his home in Lispole, near Dingle. The deceased had been enjoying excellent health until about two months ago when he injured his back trying to lift a bag of potatoes. During his lifetime Mr. Casey visited the town of Tralee only once and was never further than Tralee from the house in which he was born and in which he died.

Listowel Petty Sessions -Kerry News 05 February 1897 John Farrell was fined two shillings and sixpence for being drunk in charge of a donkey. Michael Leane charged his brother-in-law, Martin Keenan, with maliciously breaking his window. Leane stated that on a week ago the defendant had come to his premises and had drink taken. Witness refused to admit him, and, in a fit of rage, Keenan smashed the premises window. According to the witness, Keenan wanted to bully him. “It was not the first time that he tried to frighten food and lodgings out of me”, Leane said (Laughter in court.) Keenan, who did not attend the court, was fined five shillings.

Farmer Shot -Sligo Independent 15 April 1882 On Sunday last a farmer named Nolan, whose home is near Ballyduff, in North Kerry, was returning home after attending Mass when he was stopped by a masked man. The man produced a gun and fired two shots at Nolan, one of which struck him in the right arm. The two grappled briefly before the gunman ran off.

Another Farmer Shot -Magnet, London 15 April 1882 A farmer named Martin Costello, residing near Ballybunion, was fired on in his home last Monday night and wounded. He was sitting by the fireside at about nine o’clock, when a shot was fired through his window which hit him in the shoulder. Later, it was discovered that a notice was pinned to his door, accusing him of having paid his rent to his landlord. The Kerry Grand Jury has condemned such actions, expressing the horror and shame felt by every class of the community over the recent atrocities which have stained the Country. “Apart from the wretched criminals, there cannot be an individual who does not condemn this phase which murders in cold blood and even maims defenceless women”, the Grand Jury stated. The Grand Jury has been able to levy compensation for injuries inflicted upon animals, property and even the loss of a load of turf but have not been given power to compensate for the torture of helpless human beings, or the taking away of human lives. (Was it the intention of, or the instructions to, both gunmen above to merely wound their victims for paying their rent?) 8 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

It is not known if Corkery was able to swim, or how far both men were from shore, but Twohy swam to shore, removed his clothing, which was weighing him down, and made all possible haste to rescue his comrade. Two other men who witnessed the accident, Nicholas O’Neill and Thomas Brick, also swam to the canoe and found Twohy almost exhausted. Together, the three rescuers brought Corkery safely to shore.

Inquest at Lispole -Kerry Reporter 10 December 1898 An inquest was held at Lispole on Tuesday by Dr. R. Hayes, District Coroner, on the remains of the late Christopher Hickson, farmer, who died at his residence on Sunday. He was one of the passengers on the Dingle train on the morning of 24th November when three passenger carriages were blown off the rails. The passengers, including Mr. Hickson, sustained some slight injuries. He was confined to bed following the accident and was attended to by Dr. Kane, of Annascaul. The following jury was sworn, James Prendeville, Foreman, Timothy Griffin, Robert Fitzgerald, John Brosnan, John Bowler, Thomas Garvey, Patrick Garvey, Thomas Brosnan, Michael Barrett, John Moriarty, Michael Manning, Michael Hanafin, John Sullivan, and Robert Fitzgerald, Minard West. (The accident occurred at Banoge, (Baunogue), between Lispole and Annascaul. The newspaper report is questionable. It states that three passengers sustained some ‘slight’ injuries. Did the paper get its information from the Tralee and Dingle Light Railway Company? Some reports claim that Mr. Hickson died of his injuries. It was normal to have 14 men or more on an inquest jury in those days.)

Dingle Notes Richie Williams DINGLE RACES. A big Céad Míle Fáilte to all the owners, trainers, families, jockeys, bookies, stable assistants and hundreds of supporters who come to the Peninsula for the Annual Dingle Races which is commonly referred to as the Cheltenham of Pony Racing in Ireland. The 3 Day programme gets under way in the late afternoon of Friday August 7th and continues with afternoon starts on the Saturday and Sunday of the weekend. Normally the Committee are praying for a dry weekend but with climate change playing tricks this year they would welcome some rain beforehand to make the conditions more favourable for the participants. We urge our readers to come along on at least one of the days to support the hardworking organisers who spend many voluntary hours, days and months preparing for the weekends activities each year. Dingle Races are of course regarded locally as one of the social highlights of the year and rightly so too. BUSINESS CLOSURE . The public will by now have noted in our last edition the notice from Dr Linda Corkery Johnson announcing the pending closure of her dental practice at the end of August this year. Lets hope some individual or group will use the opportunity to avail of what looks like a good long term business investment and secure such an important service for the West Kerry Community.

Senior Mens Football Team for the wonderful displays in reaching both the finals of the National League and Championships this year. We appreciate the huge personal commitment of all involved including relatives and family members and look forward to a more successful period ahead as this talented Kerry Panel has many years of big performances to come. Harissa Baked Chicken, Pilaf Rice and Mint Yogurt Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School

pinch saffron (optional) 2 bay leaves 600ml stock, chicken or vegetable salt and pepper for the yogurt 100ml natural yogurt small bunch of mint leaves, chopped finely Method For the chicken Mix the harissa, lemon juice, garlic and honey together. Generously rub this over the chicken. Place this in a bowl and leave this for a about an hour to marinate. Preheat the oven to 170ºC Add the red onions and tomato to the bowl along with some olive oil, salt and pepper. Mix this all together. Place this in a roasting tray and then put this into the oven. This will take about 40 minutes to cook. While this is cooking you can make the pilaf. For the rice

I have cooked this dish countless times over the years and it never disappoints. It is one of those recipes where every ingredient has something to offer. The smoky, spicy chicken pairs beautifully with buttery saffron pilaf rice, while the cool mint yoghurt provides a refreshing contrast that brings the whole dish together. Harissa is a North African chilli paste that deserves a place in every kitchen. Rich with chillies, spices and garlic, it adds warmth, depth and plenty of character to whatever it touches. Once you start cooking with it, you'll soon find yourself reaching for it whenever a dish needs an extra lift.

Put a pan on over medium heat, add the butter and onion. Cook this for about 5 minutes. The onion should have softened at this stage. Add the spices, saffron and bay leaves and cook for a couple more minutes. Add the rice and stir until the grains are coated in the butter before stirring in the stock or water and salt. Bring to the boil and then cover with parchment paper. Turn the heat down low and leave to cook for 20 minutes before turning off the heat. Check to see if the rice is cooked, add a few small bits of butter over the top of the rice, put the parchment back and leave this off the heat until the chicken is cooked.

Although harissa has a fiery reputation, don't be put off. Combined with fresh lemon juice, garlic and a little honey, the heat softens and becomes wonderfully balanced. The citrus brightens the flavours, the honey adds a subtle sweetness and the garlic rounds everything out, creating a marinade that is bold, aromatic and incredibly moreish.

Before serving use a fork to fluff up the rice.

Whether cooked on the barbecue or under a hot grill, this is relaxed summer cooking at its best. Serve it with fragrant pilaf rice, plenty of mint yoghurt and a crisp seasonal salad, and you'll have a meal that is perfect for sharing with family and friends.

At this stage the chicken should be cooked, use a small knife to pierce the chicken and check inside.

Serves 4-6 Ingredients for the chicken 4 tbsp. harissa paste

for the mint yogurt Mix the mint and yogurt together.

Add the remaining lemon juice and chopped parsley over the chicken. To serve this I always love serving dishes like this family style, just big bowls left in the centre of the table. Bain Taitneamh As!!

Camp Notes Brigid O'Connor ST. MARY'S CHURCH A large congregation attended the celebration of the bicentenary of St. Mary's Church, Camp, on Friday night. To mark this significant milestone, Bishop Ray Brown concelebrated Mass, assisted by Fr. Michael Moynihan, Fr. Eamon Mulvihill, Fr. Tom Crean, Fr. John Buckley, and Fr. Gene O'Donnell and Rev. Jim Stephens, Church of Ireland. It was wonderful to see Camp people from near and far, who made the journey home to be part of a celebration honouring the generations of their people who shaped St. Mary's Church community down through 200 years. Rev. John Fitzgerald Day, Church of Ireland donated the site to Rev. Fr. Jeremiah Falvey, PP of Kilgobbin for St. Mary's Catholic Church which was built in 1826 by local men, stonemasons and skilled tradesmen of the time.

Among the many distinguished priests, brothers and sisters featured are Archbishop Thomas O'Donnell, a native of Gleann na Gealt, who became Archbishop of Halifax, Ontario, Canada and Bishop of Kerry Michael O'Brien, whose family roots are closely linked to Kilteenbane through his brother Timothy, his two nieces, Sr. Emmanuel and Sr. Francis also answered the call to religious life, continuing the family's remarkable tradition of service to the Church. The strong tradition of family vocations in the Camp parish area is a striking theme to emerge from the research. Among those families are the three Crean sisters, Mary Anthony, Teresa Ann and Catherine, the Dunne family, Sr. Pius and Brother Brendan from Knockgloss Beg, Sisters, Brendan and.Catherine Herlihy and Sister Eileen O Donnell, Knockglossmore.

Bishop Ray's words are a reminder of the resilience and faith of those who came before us and whose legacy continues to inspire the Camp Church Community today. A commemorative booklet, outlining the early history of the Church and the story of the religious who served both at home and abroad, was presented on the night.

The commemorative booklet is available to purchase in O'Dwyer's Mace. Due to printing costs, there is a small charge of €10 per booklet. The booklet will serve as a souvenir of 200 years of St. Mary's Church, Camp in time to come. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed delicious refreshments in the Old School, a place filled with lovely memories for so many of us. It is another treasured part of our heritage, where generations of our families received their early education.

With the strength of their hands and the determination of their spirit, they built local roads and the Dingle railway line built in 1891 connecting the people of the peninsula to the world outside.

In his homily, Bishop Ray Browne reflected on the hardships those families must have endured, noting that only some twenty years after the church was built, they were faced with the devastating Great Famine. Many of them survived and their descendants have lived to tell their story.

Bríd Ní Mhoráin, on behalf of the Camp Church Community extended a warm welcome to everyone. She thanked all those who serve in St. Mary's Church past and present and everyone who cares for both the church and its grounds, which looked beautiful for this special occasion.

A sincere thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the evening such a memorable occasion.

They were people of remarkable resilience, pride, and skill. The men and women of Camp were not only farming the land and fishing, they were tradesmen too, coopers, coachbuilders, dressmakers, and weavers, whose expertise served their community well, crafts and trades needed for their survival at that time.

Their labour, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment laid foundations that extended far beyond their own time. These people were ordinary men and women whose faith, hard work, and devotion shaped both St. Mary's Church and the wider community. Their legacy lives on in the church they helped establish and in the enduring spirit of Camp itself.

Michael Gerard, Breda O'Shea and brought the gifts to the altar during the Mass. Bishop Ray Browne warmly welcomed them and acknowledged the outstanding contribution made by the parish's many religious over the generations.

What are you working on at the moment? Upcoming projects? Most recently I’ve had an acting role in Shaun O’Connor’s debut feature film Diatribe, written by the talented Paul Cahill, being shot in North Kerry. I’m currently attached as director to a feature film which we hope to shoot in Dingle subject to funding. I’m also currently completing a BA Hons in Screen Industry Practice via TU Dublin, as well as recently being appointed to the board of Dingle Film Festival, so life is busy but I like the variety that my work brings and meeting different people. What job(s) are you most proud of? I’m most proud of my most recent short film Cogar (Whispers), funded by local scriptwriting competition Físín. The reason being that when my dad arrived in the heart of London as a 17-year-old boy, he was used to speaking only Irish so had to quickly start conversing in English. After his passing, I felt a strong pull to honour his life, his resilience, his identity, and above all, his love for the Irish language. Creating a film in Irish became my way of acknowledging his bravery at such a young age, and also the quiet strength carried by so many in the diaspora who held onto their culture and language far from home. I’m by no means a fluent Irish speaker, I wish I was but I am learning. Fortunately, my son will be fluent so I feel we have come full circle and my dad would be proud. Cogar premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh last year and has since won The Best of Kerry Award with the Kerry International Film Festival and Best Irish Language Film at Fastnet Film Festival - two awards I’m very proud of. What advice would you give to anyone wanting to get into the film industry?

I’m a filmmaker and photographer living in Dingle for the past 27 years. My dad, Seamus Kennedy was originally from Baile Na bPoc, Baile na nGall and my mother, Eileen is from the Maharees. Both left West Kerry separately for the bright lights of London in the 60's and met each other in an Irish dance hall in Camden Town and the rest is history! I’m proud to be part of the Irish Diaspora and feel very lucky that my parents were from such a beautiful part of the world where I am lucky enough to live with my son.

Don't be afraid to reach out to anyone you know working in the industry; most people are willing to help and give advice. I’ve been given great support and advice over the years from friends like Ned Dowd (film producer) who lives in Dingle and has over 50 years experience in the film industry. It’s wonderful to support each other - as JFK once said “a rising tide lifts all boats.” We are also very fortunate in Kerry to have the very well respected Kerry College film school in Tralee. I have met and worked with their students and many go on to have a successful career in the industry. If you are friendly, enthusiastic and hard working, people will be happy to work with you.

How did you get into the film industry?

3 must-see films for anyone interested in filmmaking and why?

I was always interested in drama, singing and dancing. Growing up in North London in a very Irish community, I was heavily involved in the Irish dancing scene. When I moved to Dingle I joined the Bank of Ireland but I knew it wasn't for me! I was itching to do something creative so I left and completed a diploma in digital photography and set up my own wedding and portrait business in 2008. I still had an itch for drama/film so in 2015, I did a 1-year Screen Acting course with Bow Street School of Acting, which suprisingly inspired me to start writing. After graduating, I wrote, directed and produced my debut short film Uisce Beatha - The Water of Life, a self-funded project based on a true story, which screened in many film festivals and won several national and international awards. It also screened on RTÉ for two consecutive years.

Nil By Mouth (1997), written, directed and produced by Oscar winner Gary Oldman - Kathy Burke is one of my favourite actors and her performance in this powerful film is superb.

What inspired you to want to work in film? and what inspires/motivates you from day to day in your work?

Favourite film quote

I love working on a film project from initial concept to screen. Looking back, storytelling has been a huge part of my family ancestry. West Kerry has a natural talent for telling a good story so the skills are very transferable to film/TV. Sometimes I see or hear something and think that would be a great film! I believe everyone has a story in them and sometimes it’s the most quiet person you meet who has lived the most interesting life. Character-driven dramas are the kind of stories I enjoy most.

Whiplash (2014) Probably the first film I watched with ‘director’s eyes’. It had a lasting impact on me and was inspiring to know it was a originally a short film that was developed into an oscar winning feature film. The Children of Tuam by Frank Berry (2026) I watched this film recently at Galway Film Fleadh and I haven’t ever experienced hearing an audience cry so much. I love films based on true stories and this was unbelievably emotive and so sensitively written and performed. Keep an eye.. I’ve no doubt it will be a cinema soon!

Micheál Ó Coileáin Doodling on the margins of a book has a long history in Ireland. They are to be found in some ancient manuscripts dating from the 7th – 9th centuries - within the Early Christian tradition. Some of the oldest surviving traces of the Old Irish language are found as marginal and interlinear notes in Latin manuscripts produced both in Ireland and by Irish monks on the European continent. Scribes sometimes penned prayers or verses to ward off Viking raiders. One famously wrote a poem hoping a fierce storm would deter the seafaring Scandinavians:

Scribes often suffered from cold, exhaustion, and eye strain. Monastic life was not comfortable in 9th century Ireland – at least not for Fergus a scribe in the north-east of Ireland. Copying a manuscript in latin, he writes in the margins: ‘Bendacht. For anmmain feruso amen. – mar uar dom’ . (A blessing on the soul of Fergus. Amen. I am very cold). Other famous examples include notes like "It is cold today" or complaints about the poor quality of vellum or ink. One scribe scribbles on the margins of his manuscript - ‘New parchment, bad ink. O I say nothing more.’ Others express joy at finally finishing a difficult section of the text, writing things like, ‘Thank God, this page is done.’ On the margins of a Latin Grammer text, written by an Irish Monk in the 9th Century, we find the word ‘Latheirt’ written in the ogham alphabet at the top corner of a page . The word translates as ‘ale killed’ or ‘hungover.’ It has also been translated as ‘gone too far with drink.’ Possibly a mischievous and humorous note to another Irish monk to explain a shaky hand when writing the page. Perhaps the most famous piece of Irish marginalia is found in the 9th-century St. Gall Priscian. Alongside the Latin grammatical text, an anonymous Irish monk wrote a beautiful, affectionate poem to his pet cat, Pangur Bán, comparing his quiet pursuit of scholarly wisdom in the text to his cat's quiet pursuit of mice. The following is a taste of his peotic ability: I and Pangur Bán, my cat,    'Tis a like task we are at;    Hunting mice is his delight,    Hunting words I sit all night. So in peace our task we ply,    Pangur Bán, my cat, and I;    In our arts we find our bliss,    I have mine, and he has his. Practice every day has made    Pangur perfect in his trade;    I get wisdom day and night,    Turning darkness into light. These doodling’s are full of human voices, humour, frustration and resilience, offering us a rare and very real glimpse into the daily lives and personalities of early medieval Irish monks. 30 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

We are so grateful to Siún Ní Eartáin and Uisce Leather for allowing us into the closed shop last Monday. Siún did a demonstration for us by walking us through the stages of making a belt. She had stories about the history and tradition of leather making in Ireland and in Ionad na bPoll, where the shop is situated. The summer has been very busy for the Sea Safari team, but because of their pride and passion for Corca Dhuibhne, they have enjoyed taking tourists around the peninsula and seeing the wildlife and landscapes from a different viewpoint. The business began in 2018, with one boat and has now grown to six. We spoke to Jamie Ó Flannúra, who said that the dolphins were his favourite animal to spot, and who also explained the importance of local employment to the business.
