The Heart of Summer: A Seasonal Boost When We Need it Most

There is a particular ease that settles over summer just about now. The evenings stretch out, the back door stays open, someone suggests eating outside and everyone politely ignores the fact that half of the guests are still wearing a fleece. Food changes too, almost without us deciding. Meals become looser, greener, more colourful. There are tomatoes on the counter, herbs in jars of water, strawberries disappearing before they make it into anything, and the new spuds reminding us that the simplest food is often the food we remember most.

It is easy to think that summer is the season when we take a small break from our healthier habits. There are visitors, barbecues, picnics, salty bits and pieces, and the sneaky way a quiet drink can gather momentum once the evening is bright. Fortunately, summer seems to have anticipated much of our shenanigans and provides us with an abundance of foods that support vitality, circulation and the heart, as if nature had the shopping list written long before we did.

This is not a new idea. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, summer is associated with the heart and with Fire energy: warmth, joy, expansion, connection, laughter and movement. Even if that language is not your usual way of thinking, there is something in it that makes instinctive sense. Summer pulls us outwards. We walk more, garden more, swim if we are brave enough, meet people, stay out later and generally respond to the lengthening daylight with more activity and more appetite for life. The old Celtic calendar carries a similar feeling around midsummer, that high bright point of the year when everything is reaching, flowering and spilling over. The hedges are full, the herbs are strong, the bees are drunk on the whole thing and the rest of us try to keep up. It is lovely energy, but it can also be a little much. Too much rushing, too many late nights, too many “ah go on so” moments, and the bright spark of summer can tip into feeling wired or overdone.

This is where the food of the season is so clever. It does not come in wagging its finger at us. Instead, it comes in juicy, colourful, mineral-rich and cooling: strawberries, raspberries, tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes, leafy greens, herbs, new potatoes, oily fish, garlic and olive oil. None of them look like medicine, but they are the perfect remedy for these busy days.

The heart itself is often spoken about in emotional terms, and rightly so. We say heartfelt, heartbroken, big-hearted, half-hearted, take heart. The language has held on to something that modern life often separates out: the heart as both a physical organ and a centre of feeling. Nutritionally, though, the heart is part of a vast circulatory system, with arteries, veins and tiny capillaries carrying blood around the body. It is less a single heroic organ and more an entire network, quietly keeping life moving and emotions on an even keel.

That network depends on flow. Blood vessels are not rigid pipes, though we sometimes imagine them that way. They are living tissue, responding to inflammation, stress, movement, hydration, fats, minerals and plant

compounds in food. They can become stiff and irritated, or remain more flexible and responsive. This is where summer food has so much to offer, because so many of the foods arriving now seem almost designed to keep our blood vessels supple and blood flow moving.

The deep reds and purples of berries, blackcurrants, tomatoes and beetroot bring protective plant compounds that help protect blood vessels from oxidative stress. Oxidative stress can irritate the delicate lining of blood vessels, making them less supple, more inflamed and less able to relax easily. Our grandparents may not have used the word antioxidant, but they knew well enough that dark berries, garden fruit and seasonal vegetables were strengthening foods. Sometimes nutrition science is at its best when it catches up with what the kitchen already suspected. The same is true of the greens, herbs and oily fish that turn up so easily in summer meals. Put them on one plate and it is very simple: grilled mackerel with new potatoes, plenty of leafy greens and herbs, a squeeze of lemon and a little olive oil. The mackerel brings omega-3 fats to help calm inflammation and support healthy cells, while the greens add magnesium and natural nitrates that help blood vessels relax. It is this fresh, familiar food that supports circulation and is genuinely good for the heart.

Garlic is another old ally of the heart and circulation. It has been used traditionally for generations, and modern research continues to explore its role in supporting healthy blood pressure and cholesterol balance. Garlic contains sulphur compounds, such as allicin, that support cholesterol balance by gently influencing how the liver handles fats, while also helping protect blood vessels from oxidative stress.

Of course, summer has its dark side too. Extra salt can creep in through crisps, marinades, olives, cheese and sauces, while alcohol is often poured more freely when the evening is long. This is not a reason to turn summer into a lecture, but it is worth noticing. The body is not asking for perfection but is usually just asking not to be ignored completely.

A good way to think about it is balance over a few days rather than rules at every meal. If one evening is heavier, saltier or later, the next day can be greener, juicier and simpler: new potatoes with their skins, tomatoes, cucumber, herbs, berries, water, a walk, maybe fish for dinner. Not punishment or regret, just a return. The summer season makes that return easier because the food is already there, waiting.

Heart-supportive summer food is generous food. It belongs in bowls and platters, passed around the table, eaten outside when possible and inside when the weather remembers where we live. Yes, the heart is nourished by nutrients, but it is also supported by rhythm, pleasure, movement, connection and joy.

Modern nutrition can talk about antioxidants, omega-3 fats, nitric oxide, magnesium, potassium and vascular health, and all of that matters. But it makes most sense when it finds its way back to the kitchen. In the end, summer heart health may look less like a deliberate plan and more like dinner: a plate of colourful food, eaten with people you like, while the evening does its best to stay bright. Enjoy.

Farmer Horribly Mangled

Last Friday a farmer named James Curtin, whose home is some seven miles from Castleisland, was the victim of a shocking accident resulting from his body being ripped by a hay machine. It is reported that the unfortunate man was engaged in gathering hay with a machine called a slide, when it suddenly hit an obstruction on the ground. The machine rebounded and struck the operator on his body. He was flung forward with great force and then the machine came upon him. Its long spikes ripped his stomach and other parts of his body. His legs were horribly lacerated, as well as his head and part of his side. He was brought home bleeding profusely and in an exhausted condition. A doctor came to examine him. His wounds are of a critical nature, and he lies in a rather serious condition.

Man Found Dying

-Evening Echo 12 April 1904

The sad news reached us here on Saturday of a fatal accident to a farmer name Begley, residing at a place called Ballinasaor. At about eight o’clock in the evening, the man was found by a neighbour, named Wren, in a dying condition on the road. It is reported that the deceased travelled by donkey and car to Annascaul village, some miles to the east, that afternoon with £5 to purchase his weekly supply of household necessities. He was seen to leave the village at a good time in the evening, and his death in such a short time later was a great shock to the community. There was a severe mark on his forehead, and the belief is that the donkey, known for being a stumbler, precipitated the victim onto the road, where he received his death wound. The coroner will be holding an inquest. Mr. Begley was about sixty years of age and was very popular among all classes. His funeral took place yesterday.

(No mention of family. £5 was a lot of money in those days.)

Frenchmen Rescued In Dingle Harbour

At about six o’clock on Sunday evening three members of the French smack Georges-Marius, which is engaged in lobster fishing in the area for some time past, had a narrow escape from drowning while sailing in a yawl in Dingle harbour. A stiff breeze prevailed at the time, with sudden squalls, and one of them struck the yawl and capsized it. The incident took place in the middle of the harbour. The men sought safety on top of the upset boat, but their position was extremely dangerous, and they were pitched into the water twice.

About five hundred yards distant from them was a small boat occupied by local young men Patrick Brosnan, Henry Meek, Maurice Kelliher and George Johnston, plus four young ladies. They were enjoying a boat trip in the harbour. Then the young men became aware of the danger facing the French men, but before they could assist, they had to place the ladies on board a trawler, lying at anchor, some distance away. They then pulled strenuously towards the stricken Frenchmen and saved them in the nick of time. All three of them were in a most exhausted and cold condition. The local Coastguard lifeboat was launched, and the crew brought the rescued men to their vessel. Great credit is due to the young Dingle men who carried out the rescue, and one of them, Patrick Brosnan, has already received the recognition of the Royal Humane Society for his action in rescuing a man from drowning some years ago.

Man Found Dead.

-Cork Weekly Examiner 22 December 1906

News reached Tralee this morning that a carrier named Daniel Broderick was found dead on the road at Ballyknockane, near Camp Junction. The deceased had been in the employment of Thomas Brien, Contractor, Tralee, and had left Tralee with a load of cut stones for Castlegregory. He was in the best of health at the time apparently. The body of the deceased,

who was a vigorous man of middle age, bore no marks that would suggest that death was caused by violence. An inquest will be held.

(No marks on the body but ‘found dead on the road’. Does that mean in the cart, or did he get off and die on the roadside?)

Mystery Drowning

- Evening Echo 26 August 1904

The body of Mr. Michael Mahony, who disappeared from his trawler last Tuesday night under mysterious circumstances, was found floating in Kilmackillogue Harbour on Wednesday morning. His body was towed ashore by local fishermen. The coroner was informed of the death early in the day, but it was five o’clock when the local police received notice that he was not at home.

The body was then coffined after being left on the beach for ten hours. The friends of the deceased were taking the body to Kenmare, 14 miles away, when they received information that an inquest would not be held on the deceased. Because the body was in an advanced state of decomposition, it was interred at the family burial ground at Templenoe on Wednesday night by the light of the August moon and some lanterns. Much sympathy was felt for the family of the deceased.

Affray Near Brosna

On Monday evening an exciting affray took place near Brosna between a party of young men who were engaged in harvesting operations. It appears an altercation took place between two of the workers, which then developed into a general melee. Pitchforks were used on the attack on each other and the altercation lasted for a considerable time. When it was over several parties were wounded, some being stabbed in the body, legs and hands while others were bruised and blackened. The affair has caused considerable public sensation.

Spiced Chicken Skewers

Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School

This is perfect for any warm evening, especially if you want to spend as little time in the kitchen as possible. It is great for a bbq or they can be cooked in the oven. If you can marinate them the night before the chicken will take on fabulous flavour and the yogurt or buttermilk will leave the chicken so juicy.

Serve with a salad of your choice.

Ingredients

1 tsp. cumin powder

1 tsp. smoked paprika

½ tsp. turmeric

1 tsp. chili flakes

2 cloves garlic crushed salt and pepper

500ml natural yogurt or 350ml buttermilk

5-6 chicken breasts, sliced salad to serve

hot sauce or your favourite chili sauce to serve

Method

Mix the spices, garlic and yogurt or buttermilk in a large bowl. Season with salt and pepper.

Add the chicken pieces. Let this marinate for at least 30 minutes or best overnight.

If using wooden skewers, soak them for at least 30 minutes or 1 hour.

Once the chicken has marinated, place them on the skewers. You can cook them in the oven (preheated to 190°C) or on a bbq over medium heat.

To cook in the oven, place tinfoil on a tray and place the skewers on then tinfoil and pop in the oven. After ten minutes turn them around and put back in the oven for another 5-7 minutes or so.

If cooking on the bbq. place them over medium heat, you will have to turn every few minutes to make sure they are not burning. They should take around 15-17 minutes in total. Allow them to rest for 5 minutes before serving. Serve with some salad and hot sauce.

Cleamhna an Choma & Glomel - Seachtain Mhalartaithe 4th - 11th July, 2026 Camp Twinning invites everyone to join in a week of celebrations, friendship and cultural exchange as we welcome our visitors from Glomel, Brittany.

A full programme of activities are planned for each day and night throughout the week.

A highlight on the social calendar of the week is Thomas’s Waistcoat Celebration on Sunday 5th. July at 7.00 p.m. in Camp Community Centre. Get your tickets in O'Dwyers, €15, Children U/12 free.

Everyone is invited to join in celebrating the life, laughter and unforgettable stories of the late Thomas Ashe, Ashe's Bar, Camp. There will be a barbeque and music and song and reminiscence of Thomas. Thomas’s signature attire was his lovely colourful waistcoats. You are asked to wear a waistcoat in memory of Thomas on the night.

And Camp Town twinning is hosting a GALA evening on Friday 10th. July at 7.00 p.m. in Camp Community Centre. There will be a wine reception, Hot Food, Traditional and Irish and Breton Music and Dance. Tickets €20 Children U/12 free, available in O’Dwyers..

A full programme of events is planned for the week. Camp Twinning encourages people of all ages to take part in the activities throughout the week., meet our Breton guests and help make their visit a memorable one. Your support and participation are what make twinning such a

Camp Seniors recently enjoyed a wonderful day out at Muckross House, followed by a delicious meal, before their summer break.

"Dhá chéad bliain ar an bhfod". 2026 is the bicentenary of St. Mary's Church, Camp. To mark this special milestone, Bishop Ray Brown will celebrate Mass in St. Mary's Church at 7.00 p.m. on Friday, 24th July. Everyone is welcome.

CHURCH WALK

The first in a series of walks to sacred places to mark the bicentenary of St. Marys began on Sunday 21st June, with a Rosary Walk through the Valley of Gleann na nGealt. It was an enjoyable occasion ending with a picnic in the sunshine. Thanks to all who joined on the day and to Nora Rice who sang some beautiful hymns at every prayer stop.

SUMMER SOLSTICE

Foinse Arts Group gave a special performance to celebrate the Summer Solstice on Caherconree, bringing to life the story of Cú Roi Mac Daire and Blaithnaid. Once again, the sun shone brightly on the mountain, providing a perfect backdrop for the large group of walkers and spectators who gathered to enjoy the event.

AI CREATION

Congratulations to Nathan Costello from Knockglossmore on the creation of his storytelling robot, 'Cian', an oral archive of the Dingle Peninsula that allows people to both hear and share local stories.

Nathan, a student at NCAD, has used AI to create this innovative storytelling robot, inspired by the seanchaí – the traditional Irish storytellers he grew up listening to in Camp.

This is a marvellous achievement and a wonderful example of how technology can help preserve our rich storytelling heritage. By encouraging younger generations to engage with the stories and storytellers of the past, 'Cian' will help ensure these unique traditions and distinctive local style of storytelling are preserved for future generations.

Castlegregory Country Market - thank you to everyone who popped in to see us in our new home over the first few weeks. The Outdoor Market which used to be down by Castlegregory Secondary school has now moved to the Community hall in the West end of the village (the hall next to Ned Natterjack's bar). It is now an indoor and outdoor market. Our season will continue every Sunday throughout the Summer until Sunday August 23rd.

Castlegregory Tidy Towns are pleased to announce the unveiling of the new bike repair station and pollinator mural at 10am on the 11th of July in the playground by Councillor Brandan Fitzerald. This will be followed by a biodiversity walk @ 10.30.

I fell into it Arse backwards. Started in the UL drama soc, then went got a place in East 15 in London and things blossomed from there. What inspired you to want to work in film? (film, TV programme, actor, etc.) And what inspires/motivates you from day to day in your work?

What was your first job in film and what have you worked on since? Ah I don't actually remember my first job in film, the first acting gig I would say was “Stones In His Pockets” in the Beehive Theatre.

What are you working on at the moment? Upcoming projects?

A Short Film called Rith Maith and another T.V. show, but I can't say much about that.

What job(s) are you most proud of?

I’m proud of most of them in different ways. The ones that I write and create feel the most important. Cuirim an-fhuinneamh istigh ann agus nuair a thagann siad le chéile, bím lasta suas go hiomlán. Working on a show like The Rainmaker with such great actors is always inspiring or Báite, which had a nice cinema release and a great team and was great craic working with such talented, sound people.

What’s your process? How do you get into a role/project and how do you work?

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to get into the film industry?

Just go for it.

Films I keep rewatching would be - The Master (Paul Thomas Anderson), it’s great, I love it. And then - Donnie Darko, The Dark Knight Rises, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Being John Malkovich, Magnolia. That's too many but they’re great.

Free Summer Citizen Science Workshops Return to Kerry’s Blue Flag Beaches

Kerry County Council is delighted to announce a series of free Summer Citizen Science Workshops at Blue Flag beaches across County Kerry this July. Delivered as part of the Council’s environmental awareness programme, the workshops will offer participants a unique opportunity to explore Kerry’s spectacular coastline alongside an experienced marine biologist and learn more about the rich biodiversity of our beaches and coastal habitats.

The interactive workshops will be facilitated by marine biologist Cath Russell of StreamScapes, who brings more than a decade of experience in environmental education, marine conservation and community engagement. Participants will investigate rockpools, identify marine species, explore the intertidal zone and learn about the importance of protecting Natura 2000 sites, including Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) and Special Protection Areas (SPAs).

The workshops are designed to be fun, educational and accessible for all ages. They will also highlight how everyday actions can help protect Kerry’s marine environment. Participants will gain a greater understanding of coastal conservation, and the role communities can play in safeguarding these important natural resources for future generations.

The programme will visit twelve Blue Flag beaches across the county, providing local communities and visitors alike with an opportunity to connect with nature and discover the fascinating wildlife that exists along Kerry’s coastline.

The workshops are free to attend and will last approximately 90 minutes. While registration is encouraged, all are welcome to participate. Children must be accompanied by an adult, and attendees are advised to wear appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear suitable for beach environments. New Geantraí Series Celebrates Irish Traditional Music from Boland’s Bar in Castlegregory

Geantraí returns to TG4 for its 20th season, continuing its celebration of the living tradition of Irish music at home and abroad.

The much-loved traditional music series has been refreshed for a new audience while staying true to the heart of what made it such an important programme over the years — great musicians, relaxed sessions, new tunes, strong local settings and the communities that keep the music alive.

This week’s episode comes from Boland’s Bar in Castlegregory, bringing viewers to the heart of the Dingle Peninsula for a celebration of music, song and dance from one of Ireland’s most distinctive traditional music regions. Set against the warmth of a local session setting, the programme captures the energy, intimacy and community spirit that have always been central to Geantraí.

Featured in the episode are Caroline Keane on concertina and Tom Delany on pipes, with song from Sláine Ní Chathalláin. The programme also features Peter Staunton on box and Niamh Varian Barry on fiddle, alongside Tadhg Scanlon on banjo, Ronan Hussey on box, Aisling Cleary on fiddle and Gary O’Brien on guitar.

The episode also includes set dancing from Rinceoirí Chorca Dhuibhne, bringing another important part of the local tradition into the heart of the programme.

Filmed in an intimate session setting, the episode captures the spirit of Castlegregory and the wider west Kerry music tradition, while also showing how Irish music continues to thrive through performance, gathering, dance and community.

Can my employer force me to take annual leave?

Most people take time of work during the summer period and the following are common queries

Are all workers entitled to paid annual leave?

All employees are entitled to annual leave, including full-time, part-time, temporary and casual workers.

Should I be paid by my employer while I am on annual leave?

Annual leave is paid time off work. Holiday pay must be paid in advance at your normal weekly rate. If your pay changes from week-to-week (for example, because of commission or bonus payments), your holiday pay is the average of your pay over the 13 weeks before you take holidays.

How much annual leave am I entitled to?

Your annual leave entitlement depends on how much time you have worked in a leave year. The statutory leave year runs from 1st April to 31st March. Most employers use the calendar year (January to December) instead of the official leave year to calculate your entitlement for administrative reasons, but this does not affect your statutory leave entitlements. Your employer should tell you when your leave year begins and ends.

There are 3 ways to calculate your annual leave entitlement. You can use whichever method gives you the greater entitlement

1. If you have worked at least 1,365 hours in a leave year, you are entitled to the maximum of 4 working weeks' paid annual leave. You cannot use this method if you changed employment during the leave year.

2. Calculate 1/3 of a working week for each calendar month in which you worked at least 117 hours.

3. Calculate 8% of the hours you worked in the leave year, subject to a maximum of 4 working weeks.

When calculating your holiday entitlement, your employer should include all the hours you worked, including time spent on annual leave, maternity leave, parental leave, force majeure leave, adoptive leave or the first 13 weeks of carer’s leave.

If you have worked for at least 8 months, you are entitled to an unbroken period of 2 weeks' annual leave. This means you can get 2 weeks off in a row.

Usually, employees can ask to take annual leave at specific times. Your employer can accept your request, or refuse your request. Your employer decides when annual leave may be taken, but this is subject to a number of conditions. Your employer must take into account your family responsibilities, as well as the available opportunities for rest and recreation. Your employer must discuss your annual leave with you (or your union) at least one month before you are to take the leave i.e. your employer cannot tell you on Friday that you must take annual leave the following week.

What if I get sick while

on annual leave?

If you are sick while you are on annual leave, you should get a medical certificate from your GP (doctor) as soon as possible to cover the days you were sick. Give the medical certificate to your employer as soon as you return to work.

This way, the sick days will not count as annual leave, and you can take your annual leave at a later date. Your employer cannot make you to take annual leave for time you were on certified sick leave.

What happens my annual leave if I am off on Maternity leave or Parental Leave?

Annual leave is not affected by other types of statutory leave. Time spent on maternity leave, paternity leave, adoptive leave, parental leave, force majeure leave and the first 13 weeks of carer's leave is treated as though you have been in employment. For example, time spent on parental leave can be used to accrue (build up) your annual leave entitlement

What happens my annual leave if I leave my job?

If you are leaving a job without taking all the annual leave you are entitled to, your employer must pay you for the days you have not taken.

Can my employer offer to pay me extra in lieu of taking my annual leave?

It is illegal for an employer to pay an employee extra instead of allowing them take the minimum statutory annual leave entitlement, except where the employment ends and the employee has earned unused annual leave days. In that case the employer should pay the employee for any outstanding annual leave and public holidays.

Can I ‘carry over’ annual leave to next year?

Annual leave should be taken within the leave year. Depending on your employer, you can agree to take your annual leave within 6 months of the relevant leave year. Any further

carrying-over (also called holding over) of annual leave would need to be agreed between you and your employer.

If you are on long-term sick leave and cannot take your annual leave due to illness, you can carry it over for up to 15 months after the end of the year it was earned. If you leave your job within these 15 months, you should get payment instead of the leave you did not take due to illness.

Inch Exhibition

The exhibition is a collection of original textile landscapes inspired by the places, memories and everyday moments that make life on the Dingle Peninsula so special. Each piece has been created using vintage linens and reclaimed Donegal tweed offcuts, which are stitched, embroidered and painted by hand to create layered landscapes celebrating Kerry and a sense of home.

The exhibition opening night will take place at Inch Community Centre on Friday, July 10th from 7.30pm.

Nature's Gift -Wild Garlic

This past Spring I received a gift of a delicious pot of pesto made from wild garlic, picked in Com Dubh, near Anascaul. The light green colour and strong smell had the goodness that a shop product could never produce. In ancient Ireland it was common in late Spring, for people to switch from a mainly meat based diet, to a plant based diet. Amongst the first of the wild edible plants to appear in woodlands and ditches was wild garlic – a welcome sight, heralding in the summer and the prospect of more food being available after the darkness and cold of winter. My friend, the pesto maker, was continuing a tradition that has a long history in Kerry – foraging.

When examining the early written texts which survive from Ireland in the 7th and 8th centuries, it is obvious that a great deal of gathering of food took place from the wild, as opposed to the cultivated. Wild garlic (Allium ursinum), still grows in shady damp woodlands, fields and along hedgerows and it is in full bloom in Mid April and into May. It is found throughout Ireland and Europe.

Its tiny white flowers and bright green leaves in some places form a canopy beneath the trees and in other areas, it’s quite scarce. It is commonplace in ancient woods where it creates a flowering carpet of star-like blossoms instead of the blue flooring of bluebells.

Wild garlic was an important wild edible plant in ancient Ireland according to the Irish botanist Peter Wyse Jackson in his seminal work ‘Ireland’s Generous Nature – The past and present uses of wild plants in Ireland.’ Jackson describes how “Chopped leaves add interest to salads or can be added to flavour other foods, such as stews, sauces, soup or soft cheeses and cottage cheese. The leaves can also be made into a puree with nuts, mustard leaves, olive oil and lemon juice to make a pesto that can be used with pasta or added as flavouring to stews, burgers and other meats.” As recently as the 19th century in Ireland, wild garlic was used to flavour butter instead of salt. There is also some evidence of bog butter, found by turf cutters, was flavoured with wild garlic and left to mature in the bog to enhance its flavour and probably to store it over a period of time. The wild herb was so highly valued in Ireland that, according to the Brehon laws, there was a penalty for stealing it from private land – the poacher would have to pay the land owner “two and a half milch cows”. In the 8th century it was customary for a tenant to provide an annual crimfeis, ‘garlic feast’, for his Chieftain, usually before Easter, where the garlic was served with milk and cheese. Failing to do so would also result in a fine or penalty.

Wild garlic was greatly valued for its healing properties in Irish folk medicine. It was eaten raw or boiled in milk and rubbed onto skin as a remedy. The herb was used to treat a host of illnesses: toothache, worms, warts, corns, sores (specifically on the fingers), wounds, sore eyes, toothache, coughs, colds, sore throats, chest and lung infections, asthma, stomach aches, indigestion, kidney problems, measles, mumps, rheumatism, sciatica, tuberculosis; it was even used as a blood purifier and to dissolve blood clots.

And finally, wild garlic was carried in people’s pockets to ward off flu during the 1918 pandemic in Ireland.

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Damien Dempsey will headline a special charity concert in aid of Billy’s Malawi Project at St. Mary’s Church on Green Street, Dingle, on Friday, 3 July, with doors opening at 7.30pm.

One of Ireland’s most powerful and authentic musical voices, Dempsey is renowned for his stirring live performances and deeply personal songs, shaped by themes of Irish life, history and resilience. His appearance in the intimate setting of St. Mary’s Church offers a rare opportunity to experience his music up close.

He will be joined on the night by Lumiere, the acclaimed duo of Eilís Kennedy and Pauline Scanlon, whose sound is rooted in the rich singing tradition of West Kerry. Kerry Wild Bee Festival

Bígí linn - Join Transition Kerry at Tralee Bay Wetlands for 4th Kerry Wild Bee Festival 2026, which will be taking place on the 4th and 5th July at Tralee Bay Wetlands Ecology Park.

This year the festival will focus on ‘Developing community resilience with the help of our pollinators’. Transition Kerry will host an interactive conversation with Ballybunion Nature Group, Castlegregory Tidy Towns and Tralee Tidy Towns, focusing on their community actions for pollinators. When we take actions to restore nature, by creating habitats connected by ecological corridors for wild bees, this builds resilience in to our communities on many levels. As well as providing food, water and shelter for the pollinators, these actions help to protect our towns, farms and gardens from flooding, they store carbon, hold water, and connect our communities, benefitting our wellbeing at the same time. These are actions are also beneficial for biodiversity and climate adaptation, which reflects work being done by Transition Kerry as part of their Community Climate Adaptation & Resilience programme, supported by NEWKD LEADER funding. Festival events include planting fruit trees for pollinators at the Greenway with Friends of the Tralee to Fenit Greenway Community Group. We are being joined by Save the Green for the ecological corridor walk, exploring how ‘Tralee’s bees need our green spaces and wetlands’. There will also be a workshop on getting to know our wild bees and how to submit records to the National Biodiversity Data Centre. There is always a creative element to the festival and this year we are delighted to have ‘TIMBER – meet your perfect plant match’ back again with Mary Burke. There will also be nature-based art activities with Phil McSweeney, using willow grown in the grounds of the Wetlands. There will also be a community outreach visit with Ballybunion Nature Group in mid-July.

Tralee Bay Wetlands is an award-winning Ecology Park, recognised nationally for its leadership in biodiversity and community wellbeing. The Billy Riordan Memorial Clinic in Malawi will be held in St Mary's Church Green Street Dingle on Friday July 3rd starting at 8pm. Popular artists on the programme include Damien Dempsey, Lumiere, Gerry O'Beirne and Cúl Dubh. Tickets at local outlets or at the door on Friday evening. The Dingle section of Féile An Phráta 2026 will be held in Curran's Pub Main Street on Thursday July 8th starting at 8pm with further details from James at 087-6829255. The finalists from each of the 8 parish competitions will gather in Baile na nGall on Sunday July 12th at 8pm where the winners will be announced and prizes presented. So it's time to avoid the dreaded potato blight and get the spuds ready for this unique contest and of course bragging rights for the parish.

Maharees Regatta is the next in the rowing calendar on the peninsula this Sunday July 5th starting at 1.30 pm.

Regatta Fionn Trá and a host of seashore and on land activities is scheduled for Sunday July 12th starting at 1pm.

Also on Sunday July 19th The Annual West Kerry Agriculture Show takes place in Dingle

Mart Grounds and surrounding buildings and properties. The programme features competitions for all breeds of animals, horticulture, cookery, arts, and related demonstrations and displays. Main events open to the public at 1pm but all competition entries to be in attendance by midday if possible.

Dingle Craft and Food Market, featuring local producers and crafts, takes place on Fridays for the Summer Months from 9am to 3pm in the Holyground Car Park.

ROADS. Motorists and particularly tourist outlet operators are reminded that Kerry County Council have commenced their monitoring of the Sea Head Area with personnel in place daily between 10am and 4pm at Coumeenole advising a safe, free flowing one way traffic system from the Ventry side during the busiest times of the day.

We also advise our readers that everybody who uses our roads should drive, cycle, run of walk in a safe manner bearing in mind to wear high visible clothing when not in a vehicle on our public roads.

More frequent and timely use of indicators would also help especially at roundabouts or when entering or exiting public areas and be helpful to fellow road users and avoid unnecessary delays or accidents.

Ceol am Lóin will be beginning in the gardens of the Díeart on Thursday the 2nd of July and will continue every Thursday until the 20th of August. There is a nice assortment of local musicians and beautiful instruments. The concerts will take place between 1pm and 2pm in the back garden of the Díseart and they are a brilliant way to hear some music on your lunch break and get a breath of fresh air.

The West Kerry Under 21s who had a big win over Legion on a scoreline of 7-17 to 1-6 in the opening round of the Acorn County Championship on a lovely sunny evening in Killarney on Tuesday 23rd June. Cian MacGearailt, Paudie MacGearailt and Pádraig Ó Mainín were the leading scorers for the west but all their forwards registered, and in all nine different players scored. In the quarter final played last Tuesday, the lads lost out to a strong St Brendans Board side on a scoreline of 1-7 to 1-13.

Please be advised of Advisory Clockwise Traffic Management System for motorists on Slí Cheann Sléibhe for Summer 2026.

Kerry County Council will reestablish the advisory clockwise traffic management system for motorists on Slí Cheann Sléibhe during the peak visitor season, from Friday 26th June to Friday 11th September. During this period, the Council invites vehicles to travel in a clockwise direction around Cheann Sléibhe, commencing in Daingean Uí Chúis, then on to Ceann Trá, Cheann Sléibhe, Com Dhíneol , Dún Chaoin, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh, Muríoch, An Fheothanach and return to Daingean Uí Chúis.

A Kerry County Council employee will be stationed each day from 10.30 am to 4.00pm at Com Dhíneol encouraging vehicles travelling anticlockwise to respect the advisory.

Visitors will be encouraged to follow the recommended route from the

outset resulting in more time to relax and enjoy the magnificent views, attractions, history and culture of this beautiful part of Kerry. Local access will be maintained as normal.

Reminder for Help Please with Slí Ceann Sléibhe Visitor Traffic Flows

Therefore, we need your ongoing help please! Ceann Sléibhe and the Slea Head Drive are experiencing challenges with the visitor oneway system. Google Maps are sending visitors to Slea Head by the most direct and eco efficient way. However, in many cases, this is bringing many visitors to Slea Head AGAINST the flow of traffic causing congestion and delays on the route; AND due to the narrow roads, visitors are driving in the middle of the road thinking it is a one way system. Therefore, could we please ask you all particularly if you are in the

accommodation, food, beverage and retail sectors, when chatting to visitors, to recommend that they turn off their Sat Navs / Google Maps and follow the Kerry County Council and Wild Atlanctic Way / WAW directional signs. This includes NOT using An Classach thus allowing the businesses along Ceann Sléibhe, Fahan, Dún Chaoin,An Clóthar, Baile an Fheirteáraigh, Baile na nGall agus An Fheothanach every opportunity to welcome visitors.
