Standing out from amongst all the clutter these days is so important in all that we do everyday!
When we introduced the Best of West Hartford (BOWH) last year we insisted on it being first class –the only way you and West Hartford should be represented!
Of course with so many other “Best” events in the marketplace we felt obligated to raise the bar and standard so this BOWH award would truly have meaning. So allow me to walk you through our process:
Our Editorial Board selected the CATEGORIES (32 in year one and now 49 thanks to your many suggestions during the nominating process last year –yes we were paying attention and appreciate your input), then in the Spring all are invited to NOMINATE their favorite businesses.
The nomination process resulted in 277 FINALISTS this year –an increase of 150 over our first year. The TOP highest number of nominations made it to the FINALIST round. Of course in W.H. we know that the categories for best pizza, burger, hair salon ... and others, will have multiple ties and have as many as eight finalists! So, in total, 277 businesses are represented as FINALISTS in 49 Categories for 2016.
Honestly it scares me to think of what the numbers will be next year. Congratulations to all who were nominated and to all FINALISTS!
It was a necessary requirement from day one for us, and so important for you to realize and appreciate, that ONLY ONE NOMINATION and ONLY ONE VOTE can be cast per email address. After a VOTE is cast we require you to reply via email and confirm that you indeed cast your votes. Participants are required to fill out at least two thirds of the categories as well. This VALIDATES, to the best of our ability, that no ballots are stuffed/rigged. Those of us on staff have not selected our favorite businesses, these are your favorites, and no matter how much or how little advertising a business does with us it doesn’t matter in the voting process (actually many businesses have not been active advertisers) ... so this is truly a people’s choice award and your VOTE does matter and it will count!
Lastly, the voting lasts all summer long so you have the opportunity to cast your vote at your leisure, while away on vacation … etc. As we all know it doesn’t matter where you are, you can always cast your vote by going to We-Ha.com and clicking on the banner. (Keep that in mind next year and watch for news in the Spring.)
Once the voting closes, our contracted, third-party outside vendor shares the results ONLY with Tom Filomeno (FILOMENO CPA) so no one knows who the WINNERS are until our BOWH event.

Kathryn McMahon’s best friend Maureen Spalluto must really know her because it was Maureen who introduced Kathryn to Thomas (Tommy) Arrigg.
Tommy proposed to Kathryn at the Boston Harbor Hotel, which is just a short walk from their apartment in Boston’s North End. She was expecting to be meeting up with friends of theirs, and instead he surprised her with a ring during a stroll near the water before dinner.
Kathryn and her parents, Gregory and Mary McMahon, have been long time parishioners of The Church of St. Timothy in West Hartford, and it was very important to Kathryn that Father Cody officiate at her wedding.
Before an elegant reception at The Society Room of Hartford, an “interim” reception was held at Wampanoag Country Club, which provided the perfect backdrop for photos and cocktails before heading to Hartford.
The couple honeymooned in Kauai and Maui in Hawaii.

If You Can’t Beat ‘Em, Join ‘Em, Gardening Peacefully With Backyard Wildlife

One of my own sayings about gardening and weather in Connecticut is that we only have two seasons: winter and July. Well, this “July” we paid for our past mild winter by being over-run with lots of “critters” in our gardens. The lack of snow and extreme temperatures allowed the smaller critters, like squirrels and chipmunks, to survive and breed whilte the deer foraged freely. Bear also became more abundant.
So what's a gardener to do? As with most things, there are several strategies that gardeners can adopt depending on the damage and level of tolerance that the gardener has for backyard wildlife. So the first thing to do is determine your level of tolerance and that determines what you'll have to do to avoid wildlife.
In years with heavy browse or high populations like this year, sometimes the only true means of avoidance for the larger mammals like deer is a fence. That is the only guaranteed way to keep them out of smaller areas like vegetable gardens and sometimes the only way to keep them out of your yard. Be aware, however, that deer fencing needs to be 8 feet high to be fully effective since deer are excellent jumpers and not all zoning laws permit fencing of that height.

After I put the tape up, in mid-July, I had no issues the rest of the summer (Instructions are to refresh the tape with repellent after 30 days, but I never did. I like to push the envelope to see how long these repellents last!)
Chipmunks present a different problem. Chipmunks dig a series of tunnels called burrows. Shallow burrows protect them from predators and deeper burrows, which can be up to 3 feet long, are used for winter activity called torpor. But because of the number of these burrows, it can be difficult to trap chipmunks (please don't use poison on your property where it could be found by a dog, cat or child!) The best way to deal with chipmunks is to make it unpleasant for them to be in your gardens and around your plants. There are a number of repellents that will work and a number of different forms. Try one of the hot pepper sprays, sprinkle hot pepper or black pepper into your garden beds (buying in bulk at a discount store is great for this purpose) or try a granular form of repellent made for ridding the garden of critters. The garden center should have a good assortment of repellents and some suggestions on what's been working for their customers at the moment.
dig in your beds or pots after you plant annuals and uproot them. They don't care a bit about the plants. They want softer soil to dig in for their treasures. It's as simple as that. And after a summer of no rain when the ground is as hard as a rock, where would you rather dig? In the hard ground, or in a place where the gardener has nicely fluffed the soil for you? It's not hard to figure out why the squirrels do what they do.
Finally, West Hartford seems to be home to more bears lately. If we practice some common sense, we'll minimize encounters in our yards. The most important thing to do is to practice good bird feed sanitation. No one should be feeding birds, not even hummingbirds, right now if bears are a problem near you. It breaks my heart to even write this since my yard is certified as a Backyard Habitat but the first thing a bear goes after is a bird feeder, including hummingbird feeders. Be safe--attract the birds with plants instead.
We live in a beautiful town where we are blessed with an abundance of wildlife and natural resources. To a certain degree, it helps if we choose to peacefully co-exist. But if the "wildlife" really is showing its wild side, perhaps these tips will help you tame them! ■

What works to deter chipmunks will also work to keep squirrels from digging up your plants if you practice this little trick: tamp down the soil after you plant anything new. Why? Squirrels look for loosened soil to cache their nuts and seeds. That's why they
