It may take a few weeks for delivery if we do not have any in stock and we are waiting for a new shipment. Will there still be a fall leaf collection program? Yes, nothing has changed with our fall leaf collection program. The spring and summer bi-weekly yard waste program changes to the weekly fall leaf collection program in November and December to accommodate the increased volume of leaves.
Can I still set out yard waste during the fall leaf collection program? It depends on what is set out for collection. High volumes of woody waste or wood waste in concentration such as wood bundles is not part of the fall leaf program. This is not a change from what is currently collected. During November and December, bring woody waste (large and small) to the recycling center for proper handling and processing. Can I use my yard waste cart for fall leaves? Yes, we recommend yard waste carts for small properties with low volumes of leave waste. The 95-gallon carts are equivalent to three biodegradable yard waste bags. Can I put just grass out for collection? Unfortunately, no, grass by itself is a DEEP regulated material. Fresh green grass can be too heavy for the collection crews to handle. Mix dried grass clippings with other vegetation waste such as yard thatching waste, small woody waste (stick and twigs) leaves and other yard debris commonly generated during landscaping maintenance. Crews may skip concentrated loads of fresh grass clippings. To avoid this, bring concentrated grass clippings to the Yard Waste and Recycling center. Alternatively, leave grass clipping on the lawn where they will decompose and act as a natural organic fertilizer. West Hartford offers curbside yard waste collection as a way to offer residents more opportunity to separate waste properly during the growing months. Yard waste collection is available every other week from April 1 through October 31. Yard waste collection will be on the same day as recycling collection on the A-B schedule every other week. Place yard waste in your designated yard waste cart or 30-gallon biodegradable leaf bags and place at the curb on the same day as your recyclables. Cut brush into four-foot lengths, tied and bundled. Yard waste collection guidelines: 1. Place items in yard waste cart or biodegradable bags by 6:00 am on your recycling collection day. 2. Yard waste will be collected ONLY in the designated cart, or biodegradable bags. 3. Plastic bags, loose piles of brush, rocks, soil and sand WILL NOT BE COLLECTED 4. Brush must be less than 4 feet in length and 4 inches in diameter. It must be tied up in bundles, no heavier than 40 lbs. 5. Do not overload carts or bags 6. Logs and stumps WILL NOT BE COLLECTED. They can be brought to the Yard Waste and Recycling Center located at 25 Brixton Street. Residents have the option to purchase a 95-gallon cart for yard waste. The cart is the equivalent of three, 30-gallon bags. The cost to purchase the cart is $73.12 and residents own and maintain their carts.
