LOCAL photographer Dennis Belsar recently captured some intriguing photos of the Fletcher Jones silver ball.
Mr Belsar’s clever images depict the ball ‘sitting’ high on top of several vehicles as they made their way along Raglan Parade, with the iconic Warrnambool landmark in the background.

WARRNAMBOOL’S De Grandi Lane is set for an upgrade, improving safety and accessibility for pedestrians, particularly those pushing prams or using wheelchairs or mobility aids.
The laneway and nearby intersection will be upgraded to improve safety and accessibility, with De Grandi Lane to receive a significantly wider footpath and the Gilles and Timor streets roundabout to be renewed with safer pedestrian crossings.
Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said the De Grandi Lane changes would make the area easier and safer for everyone, particularly people pushing a pram or using a wheelchair or mobility aid.
“Right now the footpath in De Grandi Lane is just 70 centimetres wide,” Cr Blain said.
“This project will widen it to 2.5 metres, creating a much safer and more comfortable space for people walking through the laneway and in and out of the car park.
“To make room for the wider footpath, De Grandi Lane will become one-way for vehicles. Drivers will enter via Timor Street to access Ozone car park and exit onto Kepler Street.
“We will also be creating a safer space for pedestrians in Flaherty Lane with line marking, pin-down
kerbing and bollards so people will have a lot more room to walk from Ozone car park to Kepler Street.”
Cr Blain said the former De Grandi building is regularly clipped by trucks exiting the laneway.
“You can see the wear on the verandah, so this change will improve safety for people and help protect the building,” he said.
“When visiting Ozone, enter from Timor Street and exit onto Kepler Street.
“Both laneway changes are about improving safety, especially for children and for people with reduced mobility.”
Cr Blain said the roundabout was due for renewal, so it made sense to include pedestrian crossing improvements consistent with nearby upgraded intersections.
“The roundabout is several decades old and it’s starting to crack in places, along with sections of the road surface,” he said.
“While we are renewing it, we’re also delivering safer pedestrian crossings that improve access across the intersection and create consistency within the block, in line with the intersections at Liebig Street and along Kepler Street.”
On-ground works will start from next Saturday, February 14 and are scheduled to be

completed before Easter (weather permitting).
Works will begin in De Grandi Lane, which will be fully closed for approximately the first two weeks of the project.
The project will then move to the roundabout, with the intersection to be fully closed to vehicles for approximately four weeks.
“We’ve spoken with nearby businesses and, while there’s never an ideal time to close a
well-used intersection, we’ll work to minimise disruption,” Cr Blain said.
“Pedestrian access to businesses and around the roundabout will be maintained during construction, most car parks on Timor Street will still be available, and we will have detour signs in place.
“Thank you for your patience and please continue to support your favourite businesses during
the works.
“The end result will be a safer, more accessible intersection for everyone, whether you’re walking, riding, driving or rolling.”
The project has been made possible through a $400,000 grant via the Victorian Government’s Safe Local Roads and Streets Program.
Council will contribute up to $600,000 to the project.

A CONVOY of around 50 trucks left Allansford early last Saturday morning, loaded with donated hay and goods, bound for communities impacted by the recent bushfires in the Alexandra region.
The south west drivers, who donated their time and trucks to deliver the goods, were led by organiser Eddie White.
“It was a moving experience to see the appreciation of those who were receiving support after bushfires ravaged the region,” he said.
“Everything went quite well and it was wonderful to see so many people lining the roads on route and, down at Yea, to see all the farmers there.
“It was one of the best parts of it because we asked the farmers to come into the Yea saleyards to guide us out to their farms.
“The farmers all came up and showed how appreciative they were of what we were trying to do, it was nice for them to meet the drivers.”
Mr White said he could not get over the generosity south west Victorians showed, with more than just hay being transported to those in need.
“We took down so much – we had six or seven boxes from the Warrnambool Men’s Shed which went to the Yea Men’s Shed,” he said.
“We had goods donated to foundations, the pony club got 20-30 bales of hay and a lot of horse gear.
“There was a wide range of items donated and it wasn’t
only the farmers who received donations – there were people who got gloves, a bag of cat and dog food or a slab of water.”
Mr White said the appreciation of those on the receiving end of the donations was clear.
“It’s moving to see what people from our end were willing to give,” he said.
“It’s even more moving to see it donated.
“What the farmers from down here who donated didn’t get to see was the expressions on the faces of those who received the support. That was the best part of what we’ve done.
“The generosity of the farmers in the south west is just amazing, it’s phenomenal, and that’s just what it is – so the experience has been truly great.”

WARRNAMBOOL and the south west have been included in an expanded Geelong Cats ‘Next Generation Academy’ region.
The inclusion will create new opportunities for the Geelong Cats and Warrnambool City Council to collaborate on initiatives both on and off the field.
Both organisations joined AFL Victoria in hosting a ‘Beyond the Boundary’ business breakfast last Wednesday, attended by more than 70 local business leaders and professionals.
The breakfast was part of a larger Community Camp, which also saw Cats players and staff conducting kids’ clinics, a coaches’ dinner, school visits as well as an open training session at Warrnambool’s premier sporting facility, Reid Oval.
Geelong Cats chief executive officer Steve Hocking, who spoke at the breakfast alongside captain Patrick Dangerfield, said that being part of regional communities was at the heart of the club’s identity.
“Our return to Warrnambool reinforces our long-standing commitment to making the Geelong Cats accessible to fans and aspiring athletes across our regions,” Mr Hocking said.
“Our relationship with Warrnambool is invaluable, and the expansion of our Next Generation Academy means more local talent can be identified, developed, and experience the strong sense of belonging that comes with being part of the Geelong Cats.
“We’re also thrilled to deliver firsttime initiatives during Community Camp, with the Beyond the Boundary Breakfast and coaches’ dinner both delivering meaningful and lasting benefits in the area.
“On behalf of the club, I’d like to thank Warrnambool City Council and AFL Victoria for their support in helping bring these opportunities to life.”
Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said he was looking forward to continuing to work closely with the Cats moving forward.
“Geelong is probably the best supported AFL club in Warrnambool. They are our closest club geographically, so that’s a part of it, but I think what really sets the club apart is its commitment to engaging with its regional fanbase,” he said.
“This isn’t the first time in recent years that the Cats have visited Warrnambool, and now with our region included in their Next Generation Academy area, I’m really looking forward to working

together even more, both on and off the field, and the business breakfast is the first part of that.
“A closer relationship with the Cats means more opportunities for local kids to meet their favourite players and be inspired to play sport and stay active.
“For local coaches, clubs and businesses, to be able to learn from some of the best in the game is a really valuable opportunity, and for the wider community, being able to soak up the atmosphere that comes when there’s an AFL team in the city is something people really enjoy, so I’m really looking forward to seeing the continued benefits in the years ahead.”
THERE is plenty of excitement at schools across the district as students return to the classrooms.
And for some schools, there is cause for double and even triple the fun – with sets of twins and triplets making their way through the school gates for the very start of their education years.
At St Patrick’s Primary School Koroit, the school was thrilled to welcome two classrooms of Foundation students for the first time.
“This is the first year we have had two straight classes of Foundation and we couldn’t be more excited,” school principal Tegan McDonald said.
“And it’s not every day we welcome twins into Foundation in our school community, yet alone two sets.
“It’s been wonderful to see their individual personalities shine while also supporting each other as little best friends. They (and all our Foundation students) have settled in beautifully and are already such a positive part of our school community.”
Lauren Zimmer, mother of twins Quinn and Tillie, said she and her husband could not have been happier with their girls’ start to the school year.
“Their dad was very strong on sending the girls to St Patrick’s as it was the school he went to,” Lauren said.
“We love the small, close knit community feel of St Patrick’s. The teachers care deeply, not only about the academics but about truly knowing the child and their family.
“They see the kids as individuals, celebrating their strengths and gently supporting their challenges. The girls have settled in so amazingly in such a short time as they feel safe and supported – we couldn’t imagine a better place for them to learn and grow.”
These sentiments were echoed by the parents of twins Conrad and Nora Gervis.
“We felt St Patrick’s Koroit was a great fit for our children’s learning due to positive recommendations and already being familiar with the school,” they said.
“The children were very excited to start school and have been sharing at home some of the things they’ve been doing their first week.”
At Warrnambool Primary School, twins Xavier and Geoffrey Walsh headed in to class for the very first time, while triplets Ava, Bella and Kenzie Parker also began their Foundation year.

ONE month after the Christmas rush, the Warrnambool Gift Card has delivered a strong early result, with everyone reminded that cards can be purchased year-round, not just during the festive season.
Since launching in late October, a total of 580 cards worth more than $47,000 have been purchased.
So far, these have been redeemed at 77 different local businesses.
Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said that it was a strong start for the program.
“To have almost $50,000 loaded onto the cards so far, that’s a significant amount of money that is going to stay in the local economy,” he said.
“We’ve been really happy with how everyone has gotten on board. The card is accepted at over 160 local businesses, and the support from individuals as well as corporates has been very strong.
“Christmas is always going to be the peak time, but gift cards can be purchased throughout the year. So whether it’s for birthdays, celebrations like Valentine’s Day or any occasion where you’d like to give a gift, make it a Warrnambool Gift Card.
“The person receiving it has a wide range of options at their fingertips, and you can be satisfied knowing that your gift will help support local businesses and local people.”
Cr Blain encouraged anyone who received a Warrnambool Gift Card over the holidays to use it now and support their favourite local business.
FAMILY carers of people living with dementia are invited to join with aged care professionals for a tailored information event in Warrnambool this month.
The sessions, to be held next Thursday, February 12 at The Lady Bay Resort, are being organised by Dementia Support Australia.
“Supporting a person living with dementia can be daunting and at times can feel overwhelming,” executive general manager for Dementia Support Australia, Mark Peacock, said.
“This event is for carers who want to know how to manage changing behaviours in a person with dementia, while providing a safe and supportive environment for that person.”
An estimated 110,600 people are living with dementia in Victoria, many of them in regional areas.
Figures also show that two out of three people living with dementia are in the community (usually at home) and 54 per cent of people in residential aged care are living with dementia.
Dementia Support Australia is a free advisory and support service funded by the federal government and led by HammondCare, a national leader in dementia care, support and research.
Dementia Support Australia has specially developed local dementia support events.
These aim to provide carers with insightful information and practical advice from dementia experts.
Participants will meet with like-minded carers, be given clear help and advice from dementia professionals, and network with people within their community.
“Our dementia consultants and specialists will share practical insights on supporting changes to mood and behaviour, carer wellbeing, and how to access dementia care expertise,” Mr Peacock said.
“We urge carers in the Warrnambool community to join us on February 12 for the valuable information, tools and resources we offer, and also because it’s helpful to share your experiences with other carers and professionals.”
Two sessions will be held at The Lady Bay Resort next Thursday.
The first will run from 10am-12noon and the second from 2pm-5pm.
Cr Blain said that physical cards can be purchased at the Civic Centre on Liebig Street or the Visitor Information Centre at Flagstaff Hill.
Digital cards can also be purchased online and added to a digital wallet like Google Pay or Apple Pay.
“It’s good to have the option of either, but looking at the numbers so far, there’s a strong preference for a physical card,” Cr Blain said.
“Whichever option you choose, they can be loaded up with your choice of dollar amount.
“They work just like a debit card, and if stores take tap and go payments, they work with those. Otherwise the physical cards can also be inserted in an older EFTPOS machine.
“And if your business hasn’t signed up, it’s a very quick and easy process, and it’s free.”

THE annual Local Government Community Satisfaction Survey is now underway.
The annual survey asks Warrnambool residents for their views on how council has performed across a range of measures.
This includes appearance of public space, local roads, footpaths, caring for the elderly and the art gallery and library.
Chief executive officer Andrew Mason said the company carrying out the survey on behalf of a number of Victorian councils, Klein Research, would be contacting residents randomly over the next two months by telephone or via targeted social media ads.
“Across the municipality 400 residents will be surveyed, either online or over the phone,” Mr Mason said.
“These surveys provide important insights into how people perceive council’s

performance.
“A number of measures are also part of the Local Government Performance Reporting Framework and are published in our annual report to the community.
“If you do get a call or have an opportunity to take part in the online survey please consider sharing your view – the surveys take about 10 minutes.”
Council will present the survey results to the community at an open council meeting in June or July.
Survey responses are anonymous, with just the overall results shared with council. Researchers will ask for demographic information such as age, gender and location but will never ask for your name or for other personal details.
Results will also be available on council’s website, www.warrnambool.vic.gov.au/ community-satisfaction-surveys

THE Let’s Talk Foundation has been nominated for multiple awards in the 2026 Suicide Prevention Australia LiFE Awards.
Let’s Talk has received two nominations for the Communities in Action award, while team member Kelly Marson was nominated in the Outstanding Contribution (individual) category.
Ms Marson, who is communication activation team leader for Let’s Talk, said she was thrilled to have been recognised with a nomination.
“None of us does this for applause or recognition, but it’s humbling to know that other people are noticing and appreciating the difference we are making,” Ms Marson said.
She will be in Melbourne on February 26 for the awards presentation ceremony.
Award recipients will also be automatically eligible for the National LiFE Awards to be presented in Sydney later this year.
The Let’s Talk Foundation was established in 2016 in response to a spate of youth suicides in south west Victoria.
Founders Michael and Jane Fitzgibbon, who tragically lost their son Sam, joined forces with mental health practitioner John Parkinson and set out on a mission to tackle the stigma around mental health.
Their mission today is still to encourage more people to talk openly about mental ill-health and to support communities to support one another.
Working at the ‘grassroots’ of local communities, the organisation delivers presentations and other events aimed at debunking the stigma around mental health and encouraging more help-seeking behaviours.
Let’s Talk Foundation board chair Karen Foster said the nomination alone was an affirming acknowledgement of the organisation’s work across south west Victoria.
“We couldn’t do this work without our team of volunteers, including the lived-experience speakers who share their own stories in the hope of inspiring even just one person to ask for help” Ms Foster said.
“It’s incredibly inspiring to work alongside the founders, Mick, Jane and John, whose energy and passion has made such a difference in our region over the years.”
The LiFE (Living is For Everyone) Awards recognise outstanding contributions to suicide prevention, with nominations received from across Australia.

LAST month’s Orford Vintage Rally has once again been hailed a huge success, with hundreds of people flocking to the town to enjoy an array of displays.
A crowd estimated at close to 600 people made their way through the gate and spent the day wondering the many stalls and enjoying an array of exhibitions.
A blade shearing demonstration proved popular, with shearers travelling from as far afield as Bendigo to take part.
A tractor pull was also a crowd favourite, as was the display of wood working tools and sawmilling.
“The hand held wood planes, an axe handle making machine, some drag saws, old crosscut saws, circular saw blades and a trewhalla tree pulling winch all drew good crowds,” organiser David Bartlett said.
“A modern Lucas saw mill proved intriguing for many visitors, and we were thrilled to also have a large selection of vintage cars, motorbikes and trucks, as well as stationary motors of all shapes and sizes.
“A large display of tools wired to boards, and a display of old hand beaters for cake making also helped make this year’s rally a very successful one.”

LOCAL teenager Aden Gilding continues to show his caring disposition and compassion for others and has organised a fire relief fundraiser.
The ‘Koroit Cares’ event will take place on Saturday, February 28 and is the brainchild of 15 year-old Aden.
It is hoped the family-friendly event will bring people together in support of families and communities impacted by recent fires and ongoing drought conditions.
“This will be open to all members of the public, not just those from within the Koroit district,” Aden said.
“We’re hoping for a big crowd to show our support to all those who have been affected, and who continue to be affected, by the fires and ongoing drought.”
Aden said his decision to organise this fundraiser came from witnessing the long-term and often unseen impacts that fires and drought have on rural and regional communities.
“While emergency response efforts are vital in the immediate aftermath of disasters, recovery and support for affected families often extends far beyond the initial crisis period,” he said.
“This fundraiser was created to ensure that support continues after the headlines fade.
“It is intended not only as a financial contribution, but also as a visible demonstration of community solidarity – showing those affected that they’re not alone and that regional communities continue to stand beside them.”
As a young local organiser, Aden said he felt a strong sense of responsibility to take action and create something that would allow people to contribute in a meaningful, practical way.
“All funds raised on the day will be split evenly and donated directly to Need for Feed Australia and Blaze Aid,” he said.
“Both these organisations were chosen for their strong track records in providing hands-on, practical support to fire and drought affected farming families and rural communities,” he said.
“Their work includes supplying essential feed, labour
and resources that assist families during recovery and rebuilding periods.”
He added that the decision to split the funds equally ensured that support reaches multiple areas of need and maximises the impact of the community’s generosity.
“Personally, organising the Koroit Cares fundraiser has been an incredibly meaningful experience,” he said.
“At 15 years of age, the trust and encouragement shown to me by local businesses, emergency services, musicians, volunteers and community leaders has been overwhelming.”
Aden said that what began as an idea has quickly grown into a significant community effort – reflecting the strength, generosity and resilience of regional Victoria.
“This event has reinforced the importance of community connection and the positive impact that collective action can have during challenging times,” he said.
“The fundraiser has received generous backing form a wide range of local businesses, organisations and individuals and I’m extremely grateful to them all; without them the event would not be possible.”
Live music will be performed by Michael Honan and Bec Millie, with organisations such as the Port Fairy SES and Koroit Fire Brigade also represented on the day.
Local Xavier McKinnon will be among the guest speakers and there will be lucky door prizes, a raffle, barbecue, children’s activities and much more throughout the day.
‘Koroit Cares’ will be held at The Koroit Stables from 11am-2pm on Saturday, February 28
Teenager Aden Gilding is busy organising the upcoming ‘Koroit Cares’ fundraiser.

WANGOON sisters Abbey and Ella Titmus are helping to fill a growing void across regional Australia for large animal and mixed practice vets.
Australia is struggling through an ongoing veterinary workforce shortage, particularly in regional areas and in large animal practice, with many regions unable to meet demand for services and many job vacancies remaining open for more than a year.
But Ella and Abbey are keen to play their part in addressing the problem.
Ella has completed her five-year veterinary science studies at James Cook University in Townsville and is starting her first job in Moss Vale, NSW, while Abbey is set to start the second year of her veterinary course at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga.
Both sisters, who come from a beef farm at Wangoom,

are being supported by DemoDAIRY Foundation scholarships to complete their studies.
Ella, 23, will be working with five other vets at Southern Highlands Veterinary Hospital, one of the few large animal clinics in an area that serves 50,000 people and many large and hobby farms.
“There’s a bit of dairy and a lot of hobby farms so I will get really good at my cattle medicine skills,” she said.
In the long-term, Ella hopes to return to south-west Victoria and concentrate on dairy.
“I’ve done placement with three or four clinics in the south-west, which has been fantastic, but wanted to get experience in another area,” she said.
“I’ll be doing a good mix of large and small animals so I’m pretty excited to get into it. There’s a big push for rural mixed vets at the moment which is good because that’s what I want to do.”
Ella will be the sixth vet working in the practice.
“I’ve met them and I’m confident it’s going to be a very supportive workplace,” she said.
She described the DemoDAIRY Foundation scholarship as a game-changer.
“We don’t get paid for placements and have to fund them ourselves so the support has been invaluable. I cannot express enough the difference the foundation is making to regional students and creating such a positive impact on our future,” Ella said.
Ella was drawn to the Townsville course because of its focus on large animal skills.
“We had a farm on-site which gave us amazing opportunities, such as preg testing, and now I’m really keen to go out and put that in practice.”
She’s happy her younger sister is following in her footsteps.
“We both wanted to do it,” she said.
“Coming from a farming property had a big impact on both of us. We had lambs and calves to rear as we were growing up and that cemented what we wanted to do.”
Abbey, 20, returns to study on March 1 and said she was inspired by Ella’s experiences.
“I was watching the cool things she was doing and her placements and it really convinced me it was what I wanted to do,” she said.
The sisters grew up on a hobby farm which was expanded to include about 100 beef cattle in 2020.
“Those couple of years on the farm before I finished year 12 really made me aware of the industry and I found out there was a shortage of large animal vets. I have a passion for animals and can’t imagine myself doing anything else.”
Her first year of study has laid the groundwork and Abbey is looking forward to more vet-related subjects in her second year.
The DemoDAIRY Foundation scholarship has been “immensely helpful”, she said.
“Because I’m living on campus, most of it went on rent which took a load of pressure off and meant I could spend more on groceries and text books and other learning resources.”
After her course, Abbey expects to follow Ella into a mixed practice and also has long-term plans to work with large animals in south-west Victoria.

“I was spending more time on the farm and saw what Ella was doing and the pieces all fit together,” Abbey said.

How smart is your right foot?
This is hysterical. You have to try this.
It is absolutely true. I guess there are some things the brain cannot handle.
1. While sitting in a chair, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles.
2. Now, while doing this, draw the number ‘6’ in the air with your right hand. Your foot will change direction.
I told you so! And there is absolutely nothing you can do about it! You and I both know how stupid it is, but before the day is done you are going to try it again, if you’ve not already done so.

Numbers rebounded at Hamilton this week with 17,500 yarded an additional 13,700 lambs than the previous offering.
It was a more mixed quality yarding with the top end of the shorn lambs displaying the best presentation.
With around 80% of the lambs shorn and some of the woolly lambs showed signs of dryness, as did some of the lighter shorn lambs.
All regular buyers were present although not all were fully active in a market that was slightly dearer by $10 to $15/ head across most weight categories.
The very neat 22 to 25kg new season shorn lambs to the trade averaged between 1,080c and 1,160c/kg cwt while
heavier weights averaged around 1,050c/kg cwt and topped at $330/head.
There was very strong feeder and restocker competition on suitable lambs which generally sold from $170 to $265 showing an increase of around $20/head especially for the very light types.
New season light lambs 12 to 17kg sold from $170 to $220/head while trade lambs weighing 18 to 22 kg made from $220 to $252/head.
Lambs in the 22 to 26kg range sold from $238 to $290 whilst heavier export lambs made from $274 to a top of $330/head.
Market Reporter: Chris Agnew, MLA
At Mortlake agents yarded 2,741 head an increase of 545 on last week’s offering.
Overall the quality was very good across most categories particularly among the top-end trade cattle although a noticeable tail of dairy and crossbred cattle was also present.
The cow offering comprised approximately 60% beef breeds with the balance made up of dairy cows.
Approximately half of the bullock yarding consisted of manufacturing types.
A full field of buyers attended the sale which included 513 bullocks,1078 trade cattle,1032 cows and 118 grown bulls.
The market was strong with most categories selling firm to 10 to15c/kg dearer the exception being for cows.
There was solid demand for well-bred feeder steers and heifers.
Most cows softened by 10 to 20c/kg particularly heavy
cows while very light cows eased by 30 to 40c/kg.
Heavy grown bulls remained firm with medium to lighter weights slightly dearer.
Bullocks sold to a top of 478c/kg.
Better quality trade cattle ranged from 440c to 502c/kg.
Heavy beef cows made 370 to 398c/kg with one pen reaching 404c/kg while medium weight cows sold from 330 to 365c/kg.
Dairy cows particularly those with better condition ranged from 330 to 375c/kg.
Manufacturing steers reached 416c/kg.
Grown heifers sold from 380 to 449c/kg and grown steers made up to 472c/kg.
Grown beef bulls reached 440c/kg and dairy breeds sold to 390c/kg with younger bulls selling up to 422c/kg.

TEENAGER Occy Hayes continues to shine on the athletics track, bringing home silver from the 2026 New Zealand Development Tour.
Occy, a member of the Port Fairy Little Athletics Club, was selected to participate in last month’s tour which saw him compete at the North Island Colgate Games. This was part of the third instalment of the Little Athletics Victoria Development Squad.
Occy had qualified to compete in the highly
competitive 400m, 800m, 1500m and relay events.
A junior middle-distance runner, Occy finished first in his heat in the 1500m event and was placed second overall, earning him a silver medal.
He also ran the 800 metre leg of a 1600m medley relay (his team finishing in third place).
Despite his busy race program, Occy also performed exceptionally well in the 800m event where he finished second in his heat race.
This automatically qualified him for the final, where he placed seventh.

This meet came on top of what was a very busy 12 months for the young star.
He has competed at national level in cross country over the past 12 months, as well as state level in track and field.
He also competed in the LAVic Junior Stawell Gift. Occy shares his passion for running with his family, and together they are regular participants at the Port Fairy Park Run, the Port Fairy Running Club and the Little Athletics Victoria cross-country season.
