Emmanuel College students Elina Mansbridge, Bridget McKenzie, Grear Collins and Saskia Warren were among more than 50 from the school who added colour, light and laughter to last weekend’s Relay for Life event in Warrnambool. Together, the school students struck ‘gold’ for the Cancer Council – raising more than $4,000 so far this year. For the full story on last Saturday’s event, and more photos, turn to pages 7-9.

New directors to help lead Moyne
MOYNE Shire Council has welcomed the appointment of two new directors to its executive leadership team.
Liam Arnott was recently announced as the new director assets and community, responsible for the strategic oversight of council’s infrastructure, asset management, project delivery and community services portfolios.
This will ensure those portfolios are well planned, well managed and aligned with community needs.
Liam has a background in civil construction and project management, and significant experience leading large teams across infrastructure, asset management and community focused services.
“One of my top priorities will be enhancing Moyne’s extensive road network, ensuring it is safer, more resilient and fit for the needs of our residents, businesses and visitors,” Mr Arnott said.
Symonne Robinson is the new director corporate and
governance services which covers finance, property, human resources, customer service, governance, corporate planning, and information and communications technology.
With a strong background in local government management, Symonne is an experienced leader in strategic and workforce planning, organisational development and performance management.
“I’m looking forward to ensuring our services really meet the needs of our community,” she said.
Moyne mayor Cr Jordan Lockett said Symonne and Liam each brought a great mix of experience, leadership skills and the ability to bring the best out of council’s teams.
“We have dedicated directors and staff with community at the heart of everything they do,” Cr Lockett said.
“We’re really pleased that both Symonne and Liam were already at Moyne, and were the standout candidates for their roles.
MOYNE Shire Council is calling on the community to help shape its environmental future, with the release of the Draft Environment and Sustainability Strategy and Action Plan 2026–2036 for public feedback.
The draft strategy outlines council’s 10year vision and proposed actions to protect and enhance the environment across the shire.
It focuses on key areas including biodiversity, weed management, waste and circular economy, climate resilience, sustainable land use, water security and reduction in council emissions.
The draft strategy has been developed using feedback received through Moyne Shire’s Council Plan engagement in January and February 2025.
Hundreds of residents, landholders and stakeholders were involved in providing feedback relating to the environment.
This feedback, as well as the 2025-2029 council plan, was used to shape the draft strategy.
The draft strategy has also been developed in close collaboration with the Environment and Sustainability Strategy Advisory Committee.
The committee includes eight community members and two councillors, bringing together lived experience, technical
“Together with our chief executive officer Mark Eversteyn and director economy and place, Jodie McNamara, Moyne Shire has a great team providing
leadership to staff and advice to our councillors. We wish them all the best in their roles.”

expertise and local knowledge to ensure the strategy reflects the values, concerns and aspirations of Moyne’s diverse communities.
Mayor Cr Jordan Lockett said the release of the draft marks a critical step in the development of the strategy that will guide council’s environmental work for the next decade.
“It’s about the future of our landscapes, our communities, and how we manage and care for our amazingly diverse environment,” Cr Lockett said.
“From Pura Pura to Peterborough, Yarpturk to Yambuk we have one of the most environmentally diverse shires in the country.
“This strategy is about more than words on paper, it shapes how we care for our land, our landscapes, water, energy use and future resilience - things that affect every household, farm, and business.
“These documents are very much in draft format. We expect there to be major changes to the strategy based on community feedback. We invite the community to really pull it apart, to give us your ideas and feedback. Now is your chance.”
Cr Lockett said the council had received “fantastic input” so far through the council plan and the advisory committee.
“Now we need feedback from across the shire to make sure the plan reflects the real needs, priorities, and opportunities of our whole community.”
The public engagement period will run until March 22.
Residents are welcome to complete the online survey via the council Engage Moyne page, attending online meetings or make written submissions (online or in hard copy). Drop-in sessions will be held in Port Fairy and Koroit where residents can speak directly with council staff about the draft and discuss feedback.
Listening Posts will also be held across the shire (your chance to speak directly with council staff, councillors and advisory committee members).
Residents can also take part in one-on-one conversations – simply book online to make a time to speak to a member of staff.
The draft strategy and all engagement details are available at https://engage. moyne.vic.gov.au/environment-andsustainability-strategy
“We’re committed to transparency, inclusion and listening to the people who live, play and work here,” Cr Lockett said.
“The future belongs to those who prepare for it today. Let’s prepare for the future together.
“Community feedback at this stage will directly shape the final version of the strategy. If you care about Moyne’s environment, this is your chance to influence how we protect and care for it in the years ahead.”

A’van owners gather at Surfside
WARRNAMBOOL’S Surfside 1
caravan park once again became a hive of activity this past week, when more than 140 A’van owners pulled in for a week of tours and activities.
Traditionally, Surfside comes alive over the peak Christmas/school holiday period but the busy vibe returned this month with the arrival of members of the A’van Club of Australia – all keen to enjoy their annual national gathering.
This year’s national event, which officially began last Sunday and runs through until the end of this weekend, attracted A’van owners from far and wide, with many travelling from South Australia, Sydney, the ACT, Queensland, Tasmania, Bendigo and surrounds.
President of the A’van Club of Australia, Michael Hayward, said Warrnambool was always a popular location when chosen for the annual national conference.
“Warrnambool really is a lovely seaside town that has so much to offer tourists,” Michael said.
“We were last here back in 2014 and we’re thrilled to be back again. The weather has been kind and our members are taking advantage of all that is on offer.”
The club is a national organisation for people who share a common interest through ownership of an A’van.
Currently the club has 894 vans registered, involving around 1473 people from states right across Australia.
The activities of the club are overseen by a national committee, which is also responsible for the planning of annual national “gatherings.”
“Some people travel in couples while others are solo travellers; and our membership ranges in age from their early 50s through to late 80s,” Michael said.
“We have great diversity among our membership; with people coming from a range of backgrounds – many of us are retired while some are still active in their chosen professions; we have everything from doctors and lawyers through to blue
collar workers.”
With more than 140 vans parked at Surfside this week, the flow-on effects to the local economy is also a huge boost.
“We believe the club has a significant economic impact on the community in which the national gathering is held,”
Michael said.
“Most members tend to stay for at least a week or more, as they will here in
Warrnambool.
“They not only spend at the caravan park but also on fuel, food, tourist activities, shopping and much more.
“It has been conservatively estimated that the typical number of vans in attendance contributes at least $250,000 to the local economy during the week of the gathering.”
Enjoying their national gathering at Surfside Warrnambool are, from left: Linda Samson (Yarrambat), Susan White (Sydney), Michael Hayward (Bendigo), Ros Bolton (Old Reynella, SA), Greg Bolton (Old Reynella, SA), Patsy Williams (Bendigo) and Chris Coe (Westlakes, SA).
Five decades of friendships and service
DAVE Cashill’s five decades of dedicated service was acknowledged and celebrated during a special morning tea at are-able last week.
For just on 50 years, Dave has contributed across a range of roles and work areas, including the original nursery, e-waste and the Big R’s Shed.
His work has spanned significant organisational and business changes, including the transition from Wannon Metal Design to Vantage, and later to are-able when it took over operations in 2011.
During his time in metalwork and manufacturing, this popular member of the team has helped produce a wide variety of items for customers and the community.
This included debris diverters for Reece Plumbing, where Dave was responsible for spot welding and powder coating, as well as assisting with sawhorses for Bunnings, and fences and balustrading for private homes and businesses.
Known for taking pride in his work, Dave was particularly careful
with his welding and powder coating.
One of his proudest achievements was earning his forklift licence, supported by the then manager Norm Scoble who spent many hours helping Dave work towards his goal.
When that business closed, Dave continued his employment in e-waste, brining the same commitment and pride to his work.
“I like working here as it gives me something meaningful to do,”
Dave said.
“I love the people I work with and the friendships I have formed over the years.”
General manager of are-able Social Enterprise, Paul Hughes, said Dave’s 50 years of service was a rare and remarkable achievement.
“He has contributed across many roles over the years, always taking pride in his work and building strong relationships with the people around him,” Mr Hughes said.
“We are proud to recognise Dave’s dedication and we thank him for everything he has given to are-able.”
Runners donate to men’s shed
THE Warrnambool Running Club has made a $500 donation to the Warrnambool Men’s Shed, proceeds raised from the club’s Jetty Flat 5 summer run series.
The Jetty Flat 5 featured 5km and 2.5km events conducted on the scenic trails of Lake Pertobe. The series attracted runners and walkers of all ages and abilities, creating a welcoming and inclusive environment focused on participation, wellbeing and connection.
Club president Peter Molan said the donation reflects the club’s broader commitment to the Warrnambool community.
“While running is at the heart of what we do, we’re about much more than kilometres and competition,” Mr Molan said. “We are a community-focused club that genuinely cares about supporting local organisations and strengthening the connections that make Warrnambool such a great place to live.
“We’re proud to support the Warrnambool Men’s Shed and the important role it plays in our community. The Jetty Flat 5 series is not only about encouraging an active lifestyle, but also about giving back where we can.”
The Warrnambool Men’s Shed provides a welcoming space for men to share skills, work on projects, and support one another, contributing significantly to community wellbeing across the region.
Warrnambool Running Club thanks all participants, volunteers and supporters who made the Jetty Flat 5 series a success and helped make this community contribution possible.
Dave Cashill last week celebrated 50 years of service.
Traditional awakening
WITH a splash of river water, a scattering of rice and a feed of spring onions, the new South C Dragons’ boat was officially awakened last weekend.
The new boat, aptly named ‘Wind Dragon’ was officially launched by Warrnambool City mayor Cr Ben Blain last Saturday morning.
In front of club members, friends and supporters, the ‘Wind Dragon’ was the centre of attention as members cheered its launch and then took to the water for their first venture.
The naming ceremony was one filled with excitement and tradition.
This began with an ‘eye dotting’ ceremony which involved red dots being placed on the dragon’s forehead (its wisdom eye), tongue, body and tail.
It is believed this ceremony awakens the dragon to protect paddlers, volunteers and spectators.
Spring onions were then dipped in river water and the water splashed on the dragon
as a blessing before the onions were then placed in the dragon’s mouth.
Handfuls of rice were then thrown into the river to complete the ceremony.
“The throwing of the rice in the water symbolises the prevention of the sea fishes from eating the body of Qu Yuan, the poet, which dragon boat racing commemorates,” South C Dragons president Victoria Dunn said.
“Dragon boat racing has a rich history, with traditional dragon boating in southern China dating back more than 2000 years.
“Dragon boats celebrate the life and death of Qu Yuan, a patriotic man who drowned in the Mi-Luo River in China.”
According to legend, when news of his drowning became known, boats were launched by local fishermen in a race to be the first to recover Qu Yuan’s body.
This then began the sport of dragon boat racing.
“The furious splashing of paddles and banging of drums used these days to get the crews in time were used to scare off the fish,” Victoria said.

Relay expected to surpass $60,000
ONCE again the Warrnambool and surrounding communities have dug deep for the Cancer Council, with last weekend’s ‘Relay for Life’ event expected to surpass its $60,000 fundraising target.
More than 350 walkers were bathed in sunshine as they walked laps of the Deakin University oval on Saturday afternoon and into the evening.
Warrnambool event coordinator Jodie Carey and her team of dedicated volunteers once again provided the perfect setting for the 29 registered teams to gather for what was an emotional yet exciting day of reflection, remembrance and hope.
“The committee worked extremely hard over the last 12 months planning for the weekend and I’m extremely grateful to them all; they were the backbone of our relay,” Jodie said.
“And to the 350 plus walkers who gathered on the oval at various times I say a huge thankyou.
“Thankyou all for your time, your efforts, your fundraising campaigns and for helping spread awareness and share stories of love, endurance and hope.”
With a little under three weeks remaining to bank donations for this year’s Relay for Life, Jodie encourages everyone who is yet to do so, to jump on board and give
what they can.
“We are very close to our $60,000 target and I am confident this will be well surpassed once again,” she said.
“The generosity of our community is just amazing; they really know how to dig deep and help such worthy causes as the Cancer Council.”
This year’s Spirit of Relay award was presented to the Pal Carers, while Heather’s Heroes took out the highest fundraiser title (raising an incredible $10,000).
The best dressed team on the day went to the Four Leaf Clovers.
“While it was certainly a very important day to stop and remember loved ones and friends lost to cancer, and to pay tribute to those still fighting, it was also a wonderful time to come together and share stories and spread messages of hope.”
With the 2026 Relay for Life now over, Jodie and her committee are already planning “even bigger and better things” for 2027.
Cancer Council Victoria is hoping to see the return of overnight relays next year – a concept that Jodie is eager to also pursue.
“Prior to the Covid years we did run overnight relays in Warrnambool and I’d love to see that come back,” she said.
“I’m told it is certainly on Cancer Council Victoria’s business plan to bring back the
overnight event for all relays across the state which would be amazing.
“It would run from 6pm on the Friday night through to 12 noon on the Saturday – stay tuned for updates on that!”
Anyone who is yet to make a donation towards this year’s Warrnambool Relay for
Life tally can simply head to the website and follow the ‘donate now’ links.
“Along with all our regular teams we would certainly welcome new ones next year – it would be great to also see more schools, community groups, sporting clubs and others on board.”
CLEAR skies and an appealing range of exhibits saw crowds drawn to Victoria Park for this year’s annual Koroit Field Days and Show.
Following on from the success of the event in 2025, the Koroit Field Days and Show was extended to a two-day format this year.
Across two days in February, more than 80 trade stands covered a range of industries such as rural services, machinery, home and garden, and other local products.
A demonstration by Sander Nijskens on the latest in robotic technology was a crowd pleaser, as were the cooking demonstrations, Bunnings workshops, and the arts and crafts pavilion.
The Flying Flamingos added a flare of excitement and colour throughout the day, with group members showing their artistic skills.
Some of the youngest visitors across the two days were kept well entertained in a dedicated kids’ zone, while roaming performers and an animal nursery were also popular.

Free eye screening checks
WARRNAMBOOL
Lions Club volunteers are once again offering free eye screening checks for primary school children.
The club started its 2026 program with a visit to Allansford and District Primary School last Thursday.
Last year club members screened just over 1,000 children from Warrnambool, Koroit, Port Fairy, Woolsthorpe, Allansford, Terang and Mortlake.
“As always we were made very welcome at Allansford last week and we have three more schools to visit this month – then another 12 next month,” Lions member and program facilitator Sue Amos said.
“It has certainly been a very busy start to the year but we all thoroughly enjoy this program, which is very beneficial to children and local families.”
Any schools or families wanting to know more about the program can contact Sue Amos via the Warrnambool Lions Club – warrnambool.vic@lions. org.au
Principal of the Allansford and District Primary School Gavin Young (centre) receives his Certificate of Appreciation from Sue Frost, John Amos, Heather Timpson, Sue Amos (eye screening program facilitator) and Lawrie Timpson.
Floral group adds colour to show
MEMBERS of the Warrnambool Floral Art Group added splashes of colour to last weekend’s Koroit Field Days and Show. The talented group set up a beautiful exhibition at the two-day show, joining with members from the Koroit club for a ‘Colour Brilliance’ display.
Time running out for power bonus
TIME is fast running out for residents wishing to apply for the state government’s Power Saving Bonus.
The West Warrnambool Neighbourhood House currently sits second in Victoria for the number of people they have helped apply for the $100 bonus.
With the program due to finish on Tuesday, March 31, the team want to help even more people claim the money they are entitled to.
Eligible Victorian concession card holders who pay an electricity bill are entitled to a $100 payment.
Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said that while there had been a strong response from residents, there were still people who might not realise they were eligible.
“Since the program opened in August last year, the West Warrnambool Neighbourhood House has helped over 370 people apply,” he said.
“So that’s over $37,000 back in the pockets of some of the people who
need it the most.
“But we know there are still people out there who are eligible, but haven’t applied.
“It could be because they aren’t aware that they can access this money, or perhaps they find the process of online forms quite difficult, and that’s where we can help.”
Cr Blain urged all eligible residents to make an appointment and come to the West Warrnambool Neighbourhood House.
The application process only takes about five minutes.
“So to receive a $100 payment, that’s a pretty good use of your time,” he said.
Eligible concession cards include Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession Card, Veterans’ Affairs Pensioner Concession Card or Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card.
To make an appointment, call West Warrnambool Neighbourhood House coordinator Jill Bourke on 0418 944 276.
You can also apply online at compare.energy.vic.gov. au.

CLINTON Dawes has this week officially joined the Australian 170 PegOut Club.
To qualify to join this club, a player needs to finish an official game on a 170 peg. Clinton did this during a game on September 1 last year, held at City Memorial Bowls Club.
Clinton is the 362nd Australian player to achieve this.
Results from games played this week: Fill Ins defeated Panmure Bulldogs 13-2.
Mixed Nuts defeated City Slickers 11-4. Vikings defeated Disorderly Darters 8-7. Mad Mac’s had the bye.
The night also saw both Robert Brittain and Stuart Howden throw 20 dart games while Brendan Galloway and Brett Matthews both threw 21 dart games.

Hockey for all ages and abilities
HAVE you ever wanted to give hockey a go?
Hockey South West welcomes new players of all ages and abilities with open arms.
As part of a special introduction to the sport, an open day will be held tomorrow (Saturday, February 28) from 9am.
The special ‘come and try’ day will be held at the Hockey South West facility in Cramer Street, Warrnambool.
This weekend’s ‘come and try’ day will be a great introduction to the game and to the upcoming hockey season.
A Hookin2 Hockey six week program will begin from March 7.
This is a great way to learn how to play while making new friends.
And for those keen on playing competitions, an under 8/10 and under 12 small-sided competition will begin on April 25 and run in terms two and three each Saturday morning in Warrnambool.
The under 15 and under 18 competitions will begin in April.
Under 15s will play each Wednesday and Saturday while the 18s will play every Friday. Senior hockey will commence on April 25 –including a women’s hockey 5s.
Senior player numbers have declined slightly in recent years and Hockey South West would love to see the return of former players, along with those who are yet to pick up a hockey stick.

Golfers chip in $6,000
MORE than 100 players took to the greens at the Port Fairy Golf Club for its inaugural Jenny McCosh Memorial Day. Jenny was a much loved member of the club and last Monday’s event was described as not only a beautiful tribute to her, but also an illustration of what can be achieved “by great people and a great club for a good cause.” In total, more than $6,000 was raised for Ovarian Cancer Australia.

Record numbers for run festival
LAST weekend’s Port Fairy Marathon and Running Festival attracted a record number of entries across the five events.
According to organisers, 1003 runners registered for the half marathon alone – breaking previous records. Amid the large field of athletes, Reece Edwards –winner of the 2023 Melbourne Marathon – made it back to back Port Fairy titles when he once again took line honours in the marathon, completing the course in a time of two hours, 21 minutes and 58 seconds. He was followed in second place by Jason Daye (2:37:25), with Nick Kenville rounding out the top three finishes in a time of 2:38:44.
The first female runner to finish the marathon was Siobhan Sefton in a time of 2:50:10.
She was followed three minutes later by Fleur Barling, with Hedda Cooper in third.
The half marathon saw some great results recorded,
with Toby Menday home first in a time of 1:08:59 followed by Colm Fitzgerald just 11 seconds later, with Kurt McDonald third.
Ned Verwey was the first home in the 10km event, followed by Ben Warren and Tom Bourke.
In the five kilometre race, Occy Hayes finished in the quick time of 17 minutes, 16 seconds, followed home by William Versace and John Davies.
The 1.5 kilometre circuit was once again popular for runners and walkers of all ages.
Youngster Samuel Ryan was the first competitor across the finish line in a time of five minutes, 27 seconds.
He was followed just seven seconds later by Louis Kenna, with Ruben Mills the third entrant home in a time of five minutes, 44 seconds.
“We were absolutely thrilled with Sunday’s turnout; Port Fairy was buzzing all weekend with competitors travelling from every state and territory, as well as
from overseas including New Zealand, China, France, Canada, the Netherlands and Singapore,” marketing director and committee member Amy Gibson said.
“The event continues to grow each year and remains a major fundraiser for the Port Fairy Consolidated School.”
Ms Gibson said the committee was grateful to the local community, businesses, more than 160 volunteers and all competitors across the five events for helping make the day such a success.
“The weather was humid but a brief shower just after the start of the marathon and half marathon provided welcome relief for runners,” she said.
“While no course records were broken, several elite runners including three-time marathon winner Reece Edwards and Warrnambool export and female marathon winner Siobhan Sefton, made good times.”
