THE Koroit Show has received a welcome cash boost with the state government announcing it would receive just over $8,000.
The show, one of 40 to be allocated funds in the latest round of agricultural and pastoral society grants, will use the money to purchase and install a wireless and Bluetooth PA system.

Announcing the funding early last week, Member for Western Victoria Jacinta Ermacora said the grants would support projects that bring communities together and promote Victoria’s agricultural industry.
“Victoria’s regional shows celebrate the heart of their communities, showcasing everything from fresh produce to homemade craft, making them a must
visit destination throughout the vibrant spring and summer seasons.
“The program supports projects and activities promoting agriculture, improving infrastructure and upgrading amenities for community use during annual agricultural shows and events.
“This ensures these shows remain vibrant hubs for families, volunteers and visitors alike.”

MOTORISTS crossing the Mount Emu Creek Bridge at Panmure will now have a safer passage thanks to the recent completion of works.
Upgrades to the bridge have included reinforced structures, ensuring strength and durability to continue meeting the demands of high traffic volumes and modern freight vehicles travelling along the highway.
The Mount Emu Creek Bridge is located about 30 metres east of Billet Street in Panmure and was built in 1959.
The completion of modern upgrades to the bridge brings about improved road safety for drivers, providing them with better connections to jobs and services, and goods.
The Princes Highway serves as a major transport link through southwest Victoria and connects major regional centres with regional industries.
Further projects have been planned and completed as part of the corridor upgrades.
This has included bridge works in Dennington, Weerite and Allansford and the installation of overtaking lanes at Terang, Tyrenderra and Yambuk.
The project was funded with a $2.49 million investment from the federal government and $515,000 from the state government.
These projects ensure a more
connected route that is more resilient to change and population growth while also boosting the local economy.
“This upgrade is about keeping regional Victorians safe and connected, while ensuring our transport infrastructure can support local jobs, freight and growing communities now and into the future,” Federal Minister for Regional Development and Local Government, Kristy McBain said.
According to Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne, this investment by the state government into upgrading the bridge reinforces the government’s commitment to future-proofing existing infrastructure to meet the growing needs of the region.
“With the completion of the Mount Emu Creek Bridge upgrades, we’re strengthening connections across the south west, enabling safer journeys and supporting local economic routes,” Federal Senator for Victoria, Raff Ciccone, said.
Member for Western Victoria Jacinta Ermacora, believes these recent upgrades to the bridge will give motorists added peace of mind.
“Completing these upgrades means locals and freight operators can travel with greater confidence, knowing this important link on the Princes Highway is safer, stronger and built to support south-west Victoria’s future,” she said.

HARFEST returns to Warrnambool next month and will once again celebrate the best locally grown talent and artisans.
The Warrnambool Community Garden’s much-loved Harfest is back, taking over the quarry amphitheatre on Saturday, March 14 from 3pm to 7pm with music, laughter, good food and plenty of homegrown fun.
Returning for its second year, Harfest has been described as a joyful celebration of the seasonal harvest in one of Warrnambool’s most unique settings.
The once-abandoned quarry will spring to life with a lively mix of local musicians, DJs, workshops and food vendors, all coming together to raise funds for the garden’s ongoing operations.
Making its debut this year is the inaugural zucchini cart championship, believed to be

the first race of its kind in Australia.
Equal parts ridiculous and hilarious, the race invites participants to build miniature carts from vegetables and send them rolling down the track in a contest of speed, style and glory.
Adding to the festivities, scarecrows will appear around the amphitheatre as part of a fashions in the field competition.
Visitors are encouraged to bring or build their own scarecrow creation on the day, adding a colourful touch of whimsy to the space.
This year’s line-up of talent will include Jacob Paton-Lee, a crowd favourite in the ‘Find Your Voice Collective’, up-andcoming folk gypsy jazz quartet, The Hootie Tooties, and all-women punk-pop outfit Lisztomania.
DJ legends The Cheese Brothers, featuring Gus Franklin and Jordan Lockett, will bring the quarry to a joyful crescendo
with their high-energy set to close out the day.
Families can dive into hands-on activities and roaming performers, while adults can kick back in the garden bar, serving local beer, wine and botanical cocktails.
Everyone is invited to take along a picnic rug, grab a bite, and soak up the atmosphere while supporting one of Warrnambool’s most loved community spaces.
Garden convenor Courtney Mathew said Harfest was about opening the front gates and inviting people to share in an afternoon of wholesome fun.
“The garden is run by community, for community, and Harfest is our way of celebrating that while raising essential funds,” Ms Mathew said.
“A lot of people still don’t realise this place is here, it feels like a bit of a hidden gem.
“Harfest is our chance to throw the gates open, share it with the wider community
and say: come in, have a wander, this space is for everyone.”
Dreams for transforming the old quarry, which makes up a third of the garden’s site, have been part of the vision since the garden’s inception in 2007.
The transformation has already received state and national recognition through the Premier’s Sustainability Awards and Banksia Sustainability Awards, and work on the next stage of the gully area is set to begin later this year.
Tickets are $26 for adults, with free entry for under 18s.
The garden is also calling for volunteers, with free entry offered to helpers who sign up for short shifts on the day.

BROKEN HILL

Ngatanwarr / G’day,
Firstly, our thoughts are with our brothers and sisters in neighbouring and regional shires who are facing fires and, unusually, flooding at this time of year. We’re thinking especially of the families, volunteers and emergency crews responding under incredibly challenging conditions, including many from our own CFA and SES units who are supporting neighbouring communities, often leaving local sheds operating with reduced numbers. We are deeply grateful for the care and commitment these teams show in keeping people safe, near and far.
These conditions remind us how quickly summer can shift and how exposed our communities can be to extreme and unpredictable weather. While this season is often one of connections, events and visitors, it has also brought sharp contrasts, from 46 degrees in Mortlake on the day of Council’s monthly meeting to a chilly 8 degrees overnight recently in Macarthur, reinforcing just how changeable and demanding this time of year can be for communities across the shire. Also, a reminder to check in on our vulnerable people during extreme whether events.
We are very keen for your feedback on several strategies and awards currently open for community input.
Top of the pops is our Inspiring Women of Moyne 2026 Awards for which nominations are currently open. The Awards are now in their sixth year, these awards celebrate amazing women of our communities who, through their work, studies, families, relationships or community involvement, make our Moyne region what it is today.
Be sure to nominate an inspiring woman from your community here: www.moyne.vic.gov.au/inspiringWomen
We are also seeking your feedback on our aquatic facilities across the shire. The aquatic facilities strategy is set to provide clear direction for the future of aquatic facilities in our shire.
Complete the online survey here: www.engage.moyne.vic.gov.au/ aquaticstrategy
Also, we want to hear from businesses as part of an economic temperature check across our region and to see how we can further support you to grow and thrive.
Complete the online form here: www.surveymonkey.com/r/ KFKJBYP
We are soon to release our Draft Environment and Sustainability Strategy for feedback. This strategy has been developed from responses provided during development of our Council Plan and with input from our Advisory Committee. We know how much the environment means to many of you so please have your say.
Complete your online feedback here: www.engage.moyne.vic.gov. au/environment-and-sustainability-strategy
There is still plenty of events happening across the shire this month. A big shoutout to all the volunteers who make these events happen across February 2026 including the Australian Sheep Dog Championship (Koroit) - 11-16 February, Port Fairy Jazz Festival - 1315 February, Koroit Show & Field Days - 20-21 February and the Port Fairy Marathon - 22 February.
Stay safe and wonderful.
Wurruk / Cheers.
Cr Jordan Lockett

Nominations are now open for the sixth annual Inspiring Women of Moyne awards, celebrating women who make meaningful contributions to our community.
Held in the lead-up International Women’s Day, the awards shine a light on women whose everyday actions at work, in study, at home or community involvement, make our community what it is today.
Mayor Jordan Lockett encouraged the community to take the time and nominate women from all walks of life that contribute to our shire in passionate and meaningful ways.
“This is my first year on the judging panel and my first as Mayor and I’m really looking forward to learning more about the incredible women who inspire our community every single day,” Cr Lockett said.
“They don’t need to be well-known or have a long list of achievements. What matters is that they inspire you in some way whether that be through kindness, leadership, care, resilience or simply showing up for others,” he said.
Cr Lockett said the awards are an important chance to celebrate local women while continuing the broader conversation about equality.
“It’s about recognising the contributions women make across every part of our community and saying thank you,” he said.
Nominations are open until Wednesday 16 February 2026 for women over the age of 18 who are residents of Moyne Shire.
Cr Lockett said the nomination process is simple and encouraged nominators to share as much detail as they can to help judges understand why their nominee is inspiring.
Nominate online or at Council’s customer service centres in Mortlake and Port Fairy.
A GENEROUS donation from a local historical car club has helped kick start a new community appeal for South West Healthcare.
The Warrnambool hospital this week launched its public appeal to raise $120,000 to buy a highly specialised breast tumour locator system.
“This new system would help our surgeons and radiologists precisely identify the location of impalpable breast lesions,” community partnerships manager at South West Healthcare, Suzan Morey, said.
“Impalpable lesions cannot be felt by touch so this is an essential piece of equipment for our team.
“The precision of these locator systems results in less invasive surgery for cancer patients facing a mastectomy or lumpectomy.”
Ms Morey met with members of the Warrnambool and District Historical Vehicle Club earlier this week and a cheque for $2,500 was presented towards the fundraising tally.
“This is an extremely generous donation from the car club and one that is greatly appreciated,” Ms Morey said.
President of the historical vehicle club, Natalie Serra, said the donation was proceeds from the club’s show, held at Lake Pertobe, earlier this year.
“We asked people who came to the Lake Pertobe show for a gold coin donation and many gave more than that,” Natalie said.
“People are very generous when they know where the money is going; they were very happy to donate towards this important piece of equipment.
“We currently have around 370 members

These historic cars added colour to the front of SWH earlier this week when their drivers (members of the Warrnambool and District Historical Vehicle Club) presented a cheque for $2,500 to SWH’s Suzan Morey (centre).
Pictured are club members Tony Serra (with his 1939 Oldsmobile), president Natalie Serra, Ian Rees (1925 Dodge) with son Alex, and Peter Carter (1935 Morris 8 Roadster).
and they come from as far afield as Melbourne, Ballarat, Geelong, Hamilton and then from around Warrnambool and surrounding areas.
“Some of our members have been with the club for 30 or 40 years and we even
have three or four who were founding members back in 1973.”
Natalie encourages anyone considering donating towards this appeal to do so if possible.
If your business, auxiliary, club, school,
church, family, workplace or group is looking for a worthy cause to support at the start of 2026, this appeal may be the perfect fit.
Ms Morey can be contacted at South West Healthcare, Warrnambool.

A LARGE group of Emmanuel College students are preparing to descend on the Deakin Uni grounds next week in a united effort for this year’s Relay for Life event.
Once again the college will be well represented at the relay, with a group in excess of 50 year 12 students and staff
eager to walk laps of the university oval to raise awareness, and much needed funds, in support of the Cancer Council.
Year 12 students at Emmanuel, Lenny Carey and Lucy Shiells, spoke of their excitement in the leadup to the relay.
“Similar to last year, we’ll again have a pretty large group at the relay which is great,” Lenny said.
“The year 12 students are all really

Students lined the oval for what was a very special candlelight ceremony as part of the 2025 event. Next weekend’s relay will again include the lighting of candles to remember those lost, those who have fought and those still fighting their battles with the disease.
eager to take part, which is great, and we have terrific support from staff who are also keen.”
“So far we’ve raised around $2,500 and we expect this figure to rise,” Lucy said.
In 2025 the Emmanuel College team was presented with the ‘Team Spirit Award’ which reflected its enthusiasm, encouragement and teamwork throughout the event.
The college has a proud and long standing tradition of being involved in the Relay for Life event, including the years prior to Covid and then again since 2022 when it re-started.
“This is a dedicated year 12 event,” Lenny said.
“It encourages balance and a sense of community during what is a big year for students.”

ALLANSFORD’S Ziegler Parade bridge will close for an estimated 12 weeks while major maintenance work is carried out.
The work forms part of Warrnambool City Council’s commitment to spend up to $400,000 to maintain the bridge up to the end of 2029.
The bridge will close to all traffic from Monday, February 23 and is expected to re-open in mid-May.
Significant work will be done on the underside of the deck and all structural components.
Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said that as the tallest (8.2m) and secondlongest (51.6m) council-managed bridge in the municipality, the Ziegler Parade bridge is a substantial structure.
“Just about every part of the bridge other than the road surface needs major work,” he said.
“Repairing 25 columns, five crossheads (deck supports), 20 beams, 15 diaphragms (deck bracing), as well as sections of the underside of the deck, and the bluestone at the abutments and piers – it’s a very big job.
“The bridge really is approaching the end of its useable life, and that’s why we made the difficult decision to close it.
“It’s not a case of setting a closure date and leaving the bridge until then. The bridge needs significant maintenance to get to the end of 2029 and even then, it will be monitored closely along the way to make sure it doesn’t deteriorate to the point where it’s unsafe before then.
“Safety is always our number one priority, and this work will help keep

the bridge operating for the immediate future.”
Cr Blain said that council was liaising with the state government to improve safe access to and from Allansford in preparation of the permanent Ziegler Parade bridge closure.
“We are continuing to work with the government to improve access to Allansford at Garabaldi Lane and Grauers Road,” he said.
“Once the bridge closes, these will be the main ways to access the highway, and we need to see the state government invest in these intersections.
“We had a strong response to a survey last year about the safety upgrades people wanted to see in place before the bridge eventually closes, and this is helping us to present a compelling case to the government.”

ROTARIANS, health services staff and community members will join forces next weekend for what promises to be a very special pregnancy loss support kit building day.
Organised by Sarah Wallace and her team from Wish Collective, the kit building day will be held at the Kardinia Church building on Tylden Street, Dennington.
“Following earlier coverage of Wish Collective’s work supporting families after pregnancy loss, and with help from the Rotary Club of Warrnambool, the local community is once again coming together to help ensure no-one navigates this experience alone,” cofounder of Wish Collective, Sarah Wallace said.
Sarah and husband Steven founded Wish Collective in 2023 following their own lived experience of pregnancy loss.
Since then, the initiative has grown steadily, with pregnancy loss support kits now supplied in partnership with the Rotary Club of Warrnambool and distributed through hospitals, GP clinics and specialist services.
“Pregnancy loss affects around one in four families, yet for many people the support they receive is minimal or inconsistent,” Sarah said.
“The kits are designed to offer acknowledgement, practical care and clear pathways to support at a time when people often feel overwhelmed.”
Each kit contains practical items, written resources, and information on local and national support services.
The kits are provided free of charge to individuals and families.
Feedback from recipients continues to highlight the impact of the initiative.
“Families regularly share that receiving a kit made them feel genuinely seen and supported.
“One family described it as something that completely changed their experience of loss, simply through being acknowledged and given clear support options.”
Next Saturday’s kit building day reflects the growing demand for the program and the strong level of community involvement that has supported its expansion.
Volunteers from across the region will take part, helping ensure continued supply of kits to local services.
“Wish Collective’s work wouldn’t be possible without community fundraising, sponsorship, volunteer support and partnerships with local organisations, including Rotary,” Sarah said.
Anyone wishing to learn more can follow @wish.collective or visit the organisation’s website.
The kit building day at Dennington will take place next Saturday, February 21 from 10am.
HOUSEHOLDS across Moyne Shire
may receive a phone call or see an invitation on social media inviting them to take part in a survey sometime between now and the end of March.
The survey is currently being conducted by TKW Research on behalf of independent market research agency, Klein Research.
The community satisfaction survey, coordinated by Local Government Victoria, gives residents the chance to share their views on how council is performing across various areas.
This includes customer service, roads, business and community development, and overall council direction.
Similar surveys will be undertaken across other Victorian councils.
Participating councils receive reports that
compare results with previous years, state-wide findings and councils of a similar size.
Moyne Shire mayor Cr Jordan Lockett said the survey was a valuable way for residents to have their say.
“Four hundred residents are selected at random, and all responses are voluntary and anonymous,” Cr Lockett said.
“Council only sees the overall results, which helps us understand what we’re doing well and where there’s room to improve,” he said.
“We’ll share the results with the community in June 2026 through our usual communication channels.
“We really appreciate those who take the time to provide us with this important feedback.”
The survey takes around 15 minutes to complete.
Calls may be made from a landline or mobile phone number by TKW Research, and residents can request help in their preferred language if needed.

RUNNERS of all ages will once again head to Port Fairy for the annual Port Fairy Marathon and Community Running Festival.
With a fast, flat and friendly multi-lap course set in the heart of Port Fairy, the 2026 event will no doubt once again attract a quality field of competitors next Sunday, February 22.
With World Athletics AIMS certification, the marathon course is wide, car free and with no stairs, allowing for fast times and easier pacing while maintaining the amazing views and atmosphere Port Fairy is renowned for.
In 2026 the race medals have a lanyard designed and painted specifically for the event by talented local artist, Liam Murphy. The 42.2km marathon will start at
7am from Railway Place (Gipps Street/ Bank Street) with the four-lap course incorporating roads taking in the sites of East Beach, The Wharf, South Beach and Gipps Street.
Also beginning at 7am will be the 21.1km half marathon, while the 10km race will start at 10am.
Those wishing to enter the five kilometre race need to be ready for an 11am start, while the 1.5 kilometre runners will head off at 11.45am.
No matter what your age or ability, pull on your runners, lace up and head to Port Fairy next Saturday for what will no doubt once again be an amazing day of fun and competition.
Entries can be placed on line prior to the event or registrations will be taken on the day.

ORGANISERS of the Port Fairy Folk Festival continue to add some exciting artists to the program, with a mix of international guests, First Nations voices and Australian songwriters now set to perform.
From soul-stirring folk and roots to choral spectacles, experimental sounds and participatory experiences, the latest additions once again reinforces Port Fairy Folk Festival’s reputation as one of the Australia’s most inclusive, adventurous and deeply connected musical gatherings.
Some of the artists set to take to the stages this year include America’s Annahstasia, Sam Evian, and Annie and The Caldwells.
ARIA-nominated First Nations artist Bumpy (who fuses neo-soul, hip hop and gospel) is also on the program along with renowned artists such as Ella Ion, Emily Wurramara, Gabby Steel, Kaurna Cronin, Liz Stringer, the Grigoryan Brothers and
the Tin Shed Singers.
The uplifting Find Your Voice Collective Showcase will no doubt be another crowd pleaser, as will the traditional Festival Choir.
Yoga and live music can be enjoyed by festival goers on the Saturday and Sunday morning.
According to director Justin Rudge, the recent announcement shows the width and breadth of the spirit that is the Port Fairy Folk Festival.
“World class artists sharing the stage with emerging voices, community choirs and participatory experiences shows that the festival is all about celebrating music as something that brings people together,” Mr Rudge said.
“Whether that’s through an intimate song, a shared cultural story, or thousands of voices singing as one, it’s certain to be another memorable festival.
“We’re now less than a month away and we can’t wait to continue traditions and celebrations in the beautiful village of Port Fairy.”

JAZZ lovers of all ages will be in for a musical treat at this weekend’s Port Fairy Jazz Festival.
The hard-working committee has spent the last year preparing to host the event.
Acquiring the necessary 10 suitable venues has proven challenging this year, and volunteers have also spent countless hours programming more than 130 bands to each play twice over the weekend.
But their commitment will no doubt pay off this weekend when the town fills with the sounds of more than 500 musicians tonight (Friday), tomorrow and Sunday.
It is hoped the event will be well supported by locals and visitors to the town.
This year’s event has attracted performers from as far afield as Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and many places in between.
In just a few short years the Port Fairy Jazz Festival has gained a reputation among musicians as being ‘the’ place to play and hear music from the full range of styles.
Audiences will be treated to everything from traditional New Orleans groups (such as Shirazz and Hot B’Hines) and swing bands large and small (Corner Pocket and Big Swing) through to groups led by excellent vocalists including Sarah MacLaine, Pippa Wilson, Anita Harris and Jennifer Salisbury.
Fusion groups (Munkus Funkus) and eclectic bands who mix their styles (Rory and Roger Clark, Vida Jazz and Todd Sidney Trio) will also be on the program.
Another feature of this year’s festival will be the free stage at Fiddler’s Green, and the awarding of the John Huf Award which encourages young performers to become involved in jazz.
The award will be presented in the Lecture Hall on Sunday afternoon.

SPARKS are set to fly across the halls of the Archie Graham Centre later this month when community members get together to share stories and spark new ideas.
The centre is about to launch one of its newest programs, ‘Community Sparks,’ which is aimed at bringing people together on a regular basis to explore ideas, build connections and celebrate local initiatives.
Sessions will be held every few months, with each gathering designed to spark conversation and incubate new ideas.
“Community Sparks has come off the back of a moving reunion in October last year of more than 30 former Fletcher Jones employees who were among a crowd of about 100 people at the seniors festival,” coordinator of community programs, Clare Vaughan said.
“The reunion took place during the event Fletcher Jones- ‘Plus 8’ and Other stories – where former employees were invited to raise their hands.
“Organisers were surprised and thrilled to see so many people reconnect, share memories and reflect on the legacy of Fletcher Jones in Warrnambool.”
Ms Vaughan said the energy in the room that day was incredible.
“It was clear there was a strong appetite for more opportunities like that – to reconnect, share stories and spark ideas.

A reunion, held last October in Warrnambool and included more than 30 former Fletcher Jones employees, has triggered the introduction of a new ‘Community Sparks’ program at the Archie Graham Centre.
“We heard from several people who missed the event and they said they would have loved to have been there; hence the Community Sparks program was born.”
It is anticipated these events will be held on Monday afternoons every few months and organisers are now following up on ‘sparks’ of ideas that have broad community interest for events in April, May and June.
The first Community Sparks
event will take place on Monday, February 23. It will be held at the Archie Graham Community Centre and will run from 1pm-2.30pm.
All community members are welcome, including past Fletcher Jones employees.
The gathering will feature the Silver Ball Social Innovations Podcast, which celebrates local stories of positive change across the region.
Lisa McLeod, executive officer of the Fletcher Jones Family Foundations, will provide an overview of the foundations and their current work.
Kirsten Diprose, a podcaster from Rural Podcasting Co, will take audiences behind the scenes of the podcast series and highlight six featured initiatives:
One Day Studios, Find Your Voice Collective, Warrnambool Community Garden, Stoked Surf
Therapy, Warrnambool College Indigenous Garden, and The F Project.
Following the presentations, attendees are invited to stay for a cuppa and conversation, reconnecting with old friends and meeting new people.
Whether you’re a podcast fan or simply curious about what’s happening locally, Community Sparks offers a welcoming space to be inspired.
IF you’re looking for a fun-filled day out with family and friends next weekend, head to Cudgee.
Cudgee is set for an exciting, familyfriendly day thanks to a group of dedicated volunteers who have been busy organising the inaugural Cudgee Cornhole Competition.
Kicking off at 11am on Saturday, February 21 at the Cudgee Hall, the event will be open to all ages.
The competition will have children, teens, adults and mixed categories – making it a relaxed and inclusive atmosphere for both locals and visitors to the town.
Cudgee Hall president Mick Houlihan said the event was all about bringing people together in the heart of the town.
“This is a fun event that anyone can get involved in,” Mr Houlihan said.
“It’s easy to play and fun to watch.” The Cornhole Competition, which will be an annual feature for the town, is just one event on a new 12-month calendar that
will see new life breathed into the historic Cudgee Hall.
“The Cudgee Hall is a great community space and we welcome everyone to join us for a fun, relaxed day,” Mr Houlihan said.
The Cudgee Cornhole Competition is open to everyone (no experience required) you simply just turn up, have a go, and enjoy a great day out in the town.
People are encouraged to take along a picnic.
Entry will be just $3 per person, which includes participation in one category.
Raffle tickets will be sold throughout the day, with a chance to win a fruit and vegetable box (drawn on the day) or some wood (drawn June 26).
The Cudgee hall can be found at Dwarroon Road, Cudgee. Doors open at 11am.
The inaugural Cudgee Cornhole Competition looks set to draw crowds to the town on February 21.

IMAGINATION and creativity were evident in the recent displays of floral art by members of the Warrnambool Floral Artists group.
The ladies were asked to present an arrangement that highlighted their individuality – and the displays did not disappoint.
In recent months the club has lost two of its highly regarded foundation members, Evora Goldstraw and Margaret Laurence.

Both ladies were life members and demonstrators, and will be sadly missed. Margaret also achieved accreditation in become an Australian floral art judge and both ladies were matrons of local hospitals and became lifelong friends.
A reminder the club will hold its next meeting on Monday, March 2 from 7.30pm in the meeting room at Our Lady Help of Christians, Warrnambool.

THE 2026 school year got off to a happy start at Warrnambool West Primary School late last month.
The students made their way into classrooms for the start of term on Wednesday, January 28 eager to return to the routine of school.
“The Foundation class took their first steps with confidence and were curious about their new routines of the day,” principal Karen Holdsworth said.
“Staff were equally excited to see their students for the new school year and ensured that their learners started off the year with care.”

RUBBER STAMPS MADE TO ORDER FROM WD NEWS
It was a good quality yarding overall with approximately 95% shorn.
The top end displayed excellent quality however some of the lighter weight younger lambs showing some signs of dryness mainly due to summer crops being under severe stress and diminishing dry pasture conditions.
All of the regular buyers were present though not all were active in what was a firm market across most weight categories.
The very neat shorn 22 to 26kg new season lambs sold to the trade at averages ranging between 1080 and 1160c/kg cwt with the heavier weights averaging between 1000 and 1050c/kg cwt and topping at $382/head.
There was very strong feeder and restocker competition on suitable lambs which generally made between $170 and $260/head equating to 1100 to 1250c/kg.
New season light lambs 12 to 17kg sold from $170 to $203/head, while trade lambs weighing 18 to 22kg made $200 to $248/head.
Lambs in the 22 to 26kg range sold from $238 to $286/ head and heavier export lambs made from $274 to a top of $382 and Hoggets sold to $298/head.
Market Reporter: Chris Agnew, MLA
Overall the quality was very good across most categories particularly among the top end trade cattle. However there was also a noticeable tail of dairy and crossbred cattle within the trade section.
The cow offering consisted of 46% beef cows with the balance being dairy bred. A full field of buyers attended although not all were active to compete on a yarding of 426 bullocks, 869 trade cattle, 970 cows and 77 grown bulls. The market was again strong remaining firm to slightly dearer across most categories the exception being some medium and lighter weight cows.
There was very strong demand for well-bred feeder steers and heifers. Heavy beef cows remained firm while some medium weight and dairy cows were 5 to10c/kg softer in
places. Heavy grown bulls were also easier by up to 10c/kg. Bullocks sold to a top of 478 c/kg. Better quality trade cattle ranged from 450 to 516c/kg. Heavy beef cows made between 370 and 394 c/kg with one pen reaching 404c/kg while medium weight cows sold from 330 to 365c/kg. Dairy cows particularly those with better condition ranged from 320 to 370c/kg. Dairy bred manufacturing steers topped at 390c/kg.
Crossbred steers sold to 440c/kg. Grown heifers made from 380 to 470c/kg and grown steers reached a top of 478c/kg.
Grown beef bulls made up to 432c/kg with dairy breeds to 390c and younger bulls sold to 375c/kg.

WHEN it comes to promoting awareness and raising funds for the Cancer Council, the Merrivale Cricket Club leads from the front.
The Tigers’ close-knit community has become well known across the district for its ‘pink stumps’ initiative and for encouraging open conversations surrounding all manner of cancers.
Club secretary Nick Sinnott said the club was always proud to be involved in such a “great cause” as promoting cancer awareness and doing what they could to raise vital funds for cancer research and
programs.
“We really had a month-long awareness campaign which not only involved our senior sides but also our juniors which was terrific,” Sinnott said.
“Our under 13s were eager to wear pink zinc and pink caps for their game against Allansford on January 31, which was played on the same day as the threes which worked out well.
“Allansford is another club that always jumps on board and shows great support; they also wore pink pads and used pink balls and there was a lot of chatter and some

money raised in the clubrooms after the games which was terrific.”
With Cricket Australia hosting its annual Pink Test during the Ashes series, Sinnott believes the timing of the local campaign also helped contribute to its success.
“People are always well aware of the Pink Test for the Jane McGrath Foundation so it’s great to be able to continue that train of thought locally,” Sinnott said.
“I think we raised around $1,000 this year for the Cancer Council which was great. But it’s not just about the fundraising it’s also, just as importantly, about awareness
and sharing inspirational stories.”
Among those inspirational stories was that of local woman Jess Tobin-Salznan.
“Jess was a guest speaker at the club and her story really is an inspirational one,” Sinnott said.
“My mum was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2018 and just a few months later Jess was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma – and she was only 19; a young woman studying, playing netball and enjoying life.
“Her story is one of courage and determination. She endured chemotherapy during the isolating
Covid period but now she is in her 20s, doing well and back playing netball.”
According to Sinnott, Jess shares the important story of positivity and life after cancer diagnosis.
“By no means do you ever get over a cancer diagnosis but you do learn to deal with it and live the best you can.
“We (at Merrivale) have a proud history of club involvement with pink stumps day and will continue to do so.
“There’s many benefits to being part of something greater than ourselves.”
