A MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

We are thrilled to be closing out our 50th anniversary season with Mark Crawford’s delightful, heartfelt homage to love, The Golden Anniversaries. He is currently one of the most produced playwrights in the country, and for good reason. Crawford’s work has been bringing light and laughs to stages across Canada for more than a decade. Western Canada Theatre audiences may remember a couple of his other works previously presented at Sagebrush; The Birds and the Bees, and The New Canadian Curling Club.

The Golden Anniversaries centres on the 50 year long love story of the Goldens, with all the joys and sorrows, glories and gut punches a couple will experience in a lifetime together. According to the opening stage directions, “It’s an evening in late July in the present—and this same date for the past fifty years.” That seems like quite a simple idea until you spend a little time considering the implications. The older I get the more I realize how much of one’s life feels evergreen and current, no matter how far into the chronological past it recedes; we just carry some things with us, all the way through. And when you are travelling the road with a partner, it’s easy to get confused about who the baggage you’re carrying really belongs to. The Goldens are like all of us, muddling through, doing their best, leaning on each other (sometimes a little too heavily) and coming through for one another, even when they’re not sure they want to. As always, Mark Crawford draws characters who feel like people we know. There is an enormous heart and a lot of love at the centre of this play. I’m so happy to have it on our stage, with these two beautiful performers bringing it to life.

We are almost ready to bring our Golden Anniversary season to an end, but before we do we have just a couple more exciting offerings to tempt you out to the theatre. Over at the Pavilion stage we will be presenting the world premiere of Cheyenne Scott’s thriller Wolf Cull. Inspired by memories of hunting with her father on the land in this region, this immersive work explores themes of self discovery, self reliance, and belonging.

And before we’re done at the Sagebrush for the season we want to invite you all to a party! On April 24th we will be hosting Breaking Ground: 50 Years of WCT. This one night only extravaganza will include great food from local vendors, a silent auction and mini museum to explore pre-show, and a line up of some of your favourite performers from the past 50 years bringing pieces from your favourite musicals to life. Then we’ll wrap the night up by inviting you all onto the stage for a disco dance party! And you can look forward to hearing all about our 51st season too! I am so honoured to be part of this team, and I'm so grateful to Ashlie and the Arts Club for inviting me to direct Mark’s beautiful script. This production is a love letter to love itself. So, I thought it would be fitting to share some thoughts/advice/ ponderings/wonderings on love from the creative team. All love is, all love can be. How to fall in love every day, and nurture it over lifetimes. How to love deeply, and allow yourself to be loved by someone who sees you—like, really sees you. How to hold love close, and how to let it go.

He is a graduate of the University of Michigan and the Dell’Arte School of Physical Theatre, and a founding member of the Caravan Farm Theatre, for whom he has written 14 plays and performed in many shows. EILEEN BARRETT – Sandy

Arthi is a very serious director, writer, and lesbian based out of Vancouver, BC. Arthi teaches devising and directing at the post-secondary level and enjoys it very much. She graduated from Simon Fraser University’s School of Contemporary Arts; was recently part of WhyNot Theatre’s ThisGen fellowship; and is an Associate Artist at Theatre Replacement. She is the happiest while cooking or gardening.
