Benevolence was developed by Tarragon Theatre at the Greenhouse Festival. Benevolence was first produced at Tarragon in April 2025, Artistic Director Mike Payette. Western Canada Theatre is a member of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT) and engages professional artists who are members of Canadian Actors’ Equity Association under the terms of the jointly negotiated Canadian Theatre Agreement.

A MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR There is something very special, something unique, about Kevin Matthew Wong’s play Benevolence. That something has everything to do with Wong as an artist. The story emerges as much from his environment as from the creator and performer. Wong works in a cross disciplinary way, as writer, performer, video and projection designer, historian, and documentarian. In fact, the story told here has had three iterations: there is this play, as well as a documentary film (also called Benevolence), and an immersive installation called Benevolence Hall, created at the Market Gallery in Toronto’s St. Lawrence Market. As we watch and listen to Wong’s story, we are witnessing the piecing together of fragments of family history, and the slow emergence of a new understanding of himself, and his place in the world. In some ways it is a familiar story, as the stories of first generation Canadian children of immigrant parents feel familiar to us now. But Wong’s Hakka roots give this version of the immigrant story a new perspective, and it provokes new questions about what it means to be “home”, to be a “guest”, and to belong. We are thrilled to be launching our Pavilion series with this work, fresh from its run at the Lincoln Centre in New York. Next up on this stage will be the world premiere of Cheyenne Scott’s immersive, Indigenous thriller Wolf Cull. And we’re not quite done at the Sagebrush! In April we will welcome the company of The Golden Anniversaries to bring a fitting close to our all Canadian Golden Anniversary season. And watch for news of our exciting celebration on April 24! Breaking Ground: 50 Years of WCT will feature some of your favourite artists from our storied past with musical performances and shared memories of the great plays and players Kamloops has welcomed and, in many cases, nurtured right here at home. There will be great food from local vendors, a silent auction, and we’ll wrap the night up with a 70s themed disco dance party on the Sagebrush stage! CREATOR’S NOTES One day while I was working on the script for Benevolence, my father looked over my shoulder and asked, "Kevin, why's this Hakka stuff so interesting to you?" It was a revealing question. It struck me how within cultural diasporas, some generations feel more access to their sense of identity than others. For Hakka, a group known in Chinese as "guest families" and as China's nomadic people—our two thousand years of migration probably exacerbates those generational gulfs. Growing up, I had a ready answer whenever I was asked about my heritage: "I'm Chinese-Canadian." Simple. But a few years ago, that confidence wavered as I began coming to terms with how little I actually understood about "being Hakka," especially when speaking with elders. If I knew anything about "Hakkaness" it was the joyful, lengthy, and often mysterious conversations my grandmother would have in the Hakka language, on the telephone with loved ones near and far. This play tries to channel a similar kind of unapologetic joy, and it hopes to interrogate some of that mystery too. I chose to create Benevolence because I had a conviction that my experience was similar to that of many Canadians. Many of us are comfortable declaring who we are—the simple version—but struggle when we consider the question more deeply. I hope that sharing part of my journey of self-discovery resonates with your own questions about identity and being here in Canada. I hope also that the benevolence at the heart of this story finds its way into yours. Kevin Matthew Wong, Creator

ARTISTIC TEAM BIOGRAPHIES KEVIN MATTHEW WONG – Creator / Director / Writer / Performer / Projection Design Kevin Matthew Wong is a Hakka Chinese-Canadian theatre creator, video artist and producer. Kevin creates and produces work across Canada and internationally at organizations like Barbican Centre (UK), Perth Festival (Australia) and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (USA), and Canada's National Arts Centre. Kevin is the Executive Producer and Artistic Associate at Toronto's Why Not Theatre, leading projects like the critically-acclaimed work Mahabharata and What You Won't Do For Love starring David Suzuki. Kevin's own company Broadleaf Creative merges social justice and live performance. Its recent projects include a documentary about Victoria's Tam Kung Temple, a Dora-Award winning museum installation, and the solo-performance Benevolence.
HAILEY TAN – Tour Technical Director Hailey is a queer, Filipino-Canadian who is excited to join the production team of Benevolence as this run’s touring Technical Director. She is a graduate of Sheridan College’s Technical Production program where she specialized in carpentry, lighting, and audio. She would like to thank her friends and family for supporting her in this journey, as well as her mentors that have helped her get to where she is now. Echo is an award-winning, proud Chinese immigrant and Tkaronto-based scenographer. She has designed for numerous art organizations in Canada, including the National Art Centre, Stratford Festival, The Grand Theatre, Why Not Theatre, Tapestry Opera, Tarragon Theatre, Buddies in Bad Times, Theatre Passe Muraille, Thousand Islands Playhouse, and various live performance festivals. Her designs have been presented in Japan and China. BRANDY LEARY – Movement Dramaturgy Brandy Leary is a choreographer, dancer, and Artistic Director of ĀNANDAṀ, whose practice integrates dance, martial arts, circus, and theatre. Grounded in the body, her work examines its entanglements with history, time, and image. Through simplicity and structure, she creates performances that embrace the minimal while achieving expansive impact. Her work has been produced across theatres, galleries, museums, public spaces, and landscapes. She served as the choreographer for Why Not Theatre’s Mahabharata, presented at major international venues, including the National Arts Centre (CA), the Perth Festival (AU), and Lincoln Center (US). Critics describe her creations as “phenomenological interventions” (Canadian Theatre), “soulful and sensuous” (The New York Times), and “hallucinatory, dreamlike” (NOW).
SIOBAHN SUNG – Outside Eye Siobahn Sung is a producer, storyteller, and convener of performances, experiences, and community connections. Guided by curiosity and openness, Siobahn shapes environments that are alive, porous, and continually evolving. Whether in a site-specific, nomadic space or the main stage of a hallowed opera house, radio station or ballroom, her main objective is to connect people, uplift communities, and activate people's creative impulses. Siobahn is currently Senior Producer at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts where she has been a member of the Artistic Programming team since 2022.
