two worlds Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam and the tropenmuseum are mission partners. their objectives and values are perfectly aligned. the hotel displays art objects from the tropenmuseum, and iconic photographs from the collection hang in every room. This year, the hotel is showing a selection of the famous Yogya Silver, and the wonderful selection of photographs in the hotel rooms underline the old ties between the Netherlands and Indonesia. The Tropenmuseum is a museum of world cultures housed in one of the most beautiful purpose-built museums in the Netherlands, located in trendy Amsterdam East. The Tropenmuseum has objects from all over the world, each of which has its own story. Its exhibitions explore current issues and arouse visitors’ curiosity about the huge cultural diversity that enriches the world and the Netherlands. Visitors leave with an awareness that, aside from the differences, we are all the same.

connected The Tropenmuseum aims to inspire people to take an open-minded look at the world, and to contribute to world citizenship. Besides the permanent Indonesia collection, this summer the museum also has exhibitions on the universally popular culture of Japan and a unique inside look at the annual pilgrimage to Mecca.

VOORWOORD

SITTING IS THE NEW SMOKING When you type this sobering one-liner into Google, this statement turns out to be supported by well-known organisations, medical professionals, and professors. Some even claim that the Netherlands are the European Champion of Sitting! About one in three Dutch people sit over seven and a half hours per day. Many even manage to sit between eight and eleven hours. European Champion of Sitting, that’s not exactly a sport you want to win at. Luckily, the solution is simple: get moving! An easy way to do it is to take the stairs instead of the elevator at work sometimes, taking the kids to school on your bicycle, and taking a post-dinner walk through the neighbourhood. And exerPhotography Amy van Leiden

cise! Despite being ‘sitting’ champions, our country does offer a lot of exercise opportunities. Indoor, outdoor, solo, in a team, strength and cardio. A lack of time isn’t a valid excuse; make time, and it will be worth it. Naturally, we can’t all be top athletes like the ones featured in this new ‘HARRY!’. Their almost superhuman performance is something we can enjoy watching and be inspired by. They are excellent role models for our children.

The new ‘HARRY!’ with its ‘sports’ theme has interviews with and articles on a selection of our country’s sports heroes: Kjeld Nuis, Rico Verhoeven, our football women, Mathieu van der Poel, top beach volleyball players, and much more. We’re so proud of them! An article about Circuit Zandvoort; wouldn’t it be wonderful to welcome F1 back to the Netherlands? And read Wilfred Genee’s column. Like us, he’s a supporter of the most fun football club in the Netherlands, Cambuur Leeuwarden.

This ‘HARRY!‘ will also introduce you to the latest sports trends. And we made a list of inspiring and challenging sports events in and near our hotels in 2019. Getting out of your comfort zone and enjoy your own athletic prowess in new surroundings. That’s not just good for your body, but for your soul as well. After all, in addition to helping you relax, exercise is also the magic word when it comes to living happily and healthily.

We’ll also get you updated on what is happening in our hotels. The cover features Déjan and Sarah. Both compete at the top in their respective sports. Read their story on page 34. And don’t miss Bert Kommerij’s column. He is the host at Hotel Jakarta. He writes about his experiences with our guests at Hotel Jakarta in his very apt way. He’s definitely worth following on Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam’s Facebook page.

Will you be joining us for a weekend cycling trip on one of the Wadden islands or a walk in the city? We hope to welcome you again soon!

Warm regards, Harry and Jennifer Westers

WILFRED GENEE ABOUT ‘HIS’

SC Cambuur Desire is what drives us. A desire for happiness, love, success, and special moments. For a football fan like yours truly, such special moments include successes by the Dutch national team, Dutch clubs in Europe, but mostly it’s the special achievements of your own favourite club. Mine is Leeuwarden’s Cambuur. A club that often leaves desires unfulfilled. As you might know, Cambuur doesn’t win much. But the bond you have with your club is unbreakable. It’s primal. As a boy, my father, sister, and I would visit every home match our club played. Always knowing we would probably lose. When it seemed that we might win, it always went wrong at the last second. Promotion to the premier division seemed within reach many times, but bad luck, lack of skill, and simple fate thwarted that much longed for success every time. Only after I had left Leeuwarden and started my television career, did they make it to the highest level. Usually not for long, but it confirmed my deep conviction that you can achieve (almost) anything in life if you truly believe in it. Provided the goals are realistic. I’m not going to get a talk show on the BBC. Let alone some feel-good show. You have to know your strengths and especially your weaknesses. The same is true for Cambuur. Becoming national champions is not in the cards, unless some sheik with a sunstroke or some Russian with Korsakov syndrome decided to invest millions in the club. Let’s face it, that’s not going to happen. That means dealing with the limitations of being a Cambuur fan. That’s true for many football fans in general.

‘You’re not Feyenoord supporter because it’s fun’ as Gerard Cox once famously put it. That dates back to before the time when Giovanni van Bronckhorst collected five cups in four years, including the national championship. By Feyenoord standards, its supporters have had some very good years recently, despite the disappointing last season. But if you’re really honest, with the exception of the very best clubs, there are few clubs who you would support because it’s fun. With clubs like AZ, Vitesse, FC Utrecht, or SC Heerenveen, there might be occasional unexpected successes, but usually it’s the top teams that get the important prizes. Ajax and PSV in particular have been at the very top for years. Still, that desire never goes away and it makes you – usually against your better judgement – hope that something magical will happen. Winning the national cup or turning heads in Europe. That desire is at the very core of our being. Buddhism teaches that it’s about the journey and not the destination. That makes Cambuur supporters excellent buddhists because they rarely get anywhere. But next season Leeuwarden will make another attempt to get back in the premier division with trainer Henk de Jong. Another year of hope and desire. I love it.

ORANGE LIONESSES

want to win!

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL IS VERY POPULAR IN THE NETHERLANDS AT THE MOMENT. THE ORANGE LIONESSES CROWNED A FANTASTIC TOURNAMENT IN THE NETHERLANDS WITH THE FIRST EUROPEAN TITLE IN THE HISTORY OF DUTCH WOMEN’S FOOTBALL AND QUALIFIED FOR THE 2019 WORLD CUP IN FRANCE. THE NATIONAL TEAM’S SUCCESS ALSO HAS AN EFFECT ON LOCAL CLUBS. THE KNVB PROUDLY ANNOUNCED A 2.79-PERCENT INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF FEMALE MEMBERS.

#18

Football is the fastest growing sport among girls and women. And we get why! Six reasons to sign up your daughter or yourself at a football club today. 1. Fit, fitter, fittest One hour of working out in a gym is torture for many people, but 90 minutes outside on the field will just be a fun game. That you want to win! Better stamina and a healthy body just come with the fun.

OKAY, OUR MEN ARE GOOD TOO, BUT THE WOMEN ARE THE BEST! NOT ONLY DID THEY JUST WIN THE WEURO 2017, THEY ALSO PUT AN END TO ALL THE PREJUDICE AND TABOOS. TOP-LEVEL GIRL POWER AND EMPOWERMENT

2. Being together If you see each other two or three times a week, working toward a nice goal (becoming champions), you’ll quickly form a bond. Team sports can result in very close friendships. 3. It’s the best game in the world Sure, there are more important things than a game of football, but it’s the best possible way to relax. With lots of laughs as well as blood, sweat, and tears. As sports presenter Kees Jansma once said, ‘Football is the most important side issue in life.’ Plus, you’ll be able to contribute in conversations about offside, transfers, VAR, Virgil van Dijk’s defensive technique and other football matters. 4. It strengthens you mentally If you can stand your own on the field, it’ll give you a lot of confidence of the pitch as well. 5. The Dutch Women’s team is doing well Okay, our men are good too, but the women are the best! Not only did they just win the Weuro 2017, they also put an end to all the prejudice and taboos. Top-level girl power and empowerment. 6. And if you’re at the club anyway... You can cheer on those handsome guys, from the men’s team.

LET’S RACE! IN 1939 CAR RACES WERE HELD ON A STREET CIRCUIT IN

THE FIRST GRAND PRIX OF THE NETHERLANDS TOOK PLACE IN ZANDVOORT, AND TOOK PLACE HERE FOR MANY, MANY YEARS AFTER. LEGENDS SUCH AS LEWIS HAMILTON AND AYRTON SENNA HAVE DRIVEN HUNDREDS OF LAPS HERE AND THERE HAVE BEEN MANY OTHER VERY EXCITING RACES. ALSO, THERE WILL BE A LOT OF GOOD THINGS FOR THE FUTURE.

After the circuit opened in 1948, the dune track was host to multiple Formula 1 Grand Prix races. The construction of the circuit was delayed significantly by the start of World War Two. Van Alphen managed to convince the occupying forces that this ribbon of asphalt was useful, because they could use it as a parade street when they won the war. When the war ended, construction of the track continued. The first race was held there on 7 August 1948. The winner was Prince Bira of Siam. A year later, another event was organised under the name ‘Grand Prix of Zandvoort’. Luigi Villoresi won it in his Ferrari.

The ‘Tarzan bend’ is the best-known bend of Circuit Zandvoort. The official explanation for the name ‘Tarzan bend’ is as follows: where the circuit nowadays is, there used to be allotment gardens. They had to make place for the circuit, but one owner of a garden did not want to give up his place. The owner, who was a big guy and was named Tarzan in the village, decided to only give up his spot if the bend were named after him. According to some, this is a made-up story and the bend would owe its name to the movie ‘Tarzan of the apes’ that was very popular shortly after the Second World War. What we certainly know is that this bend is known for the many exciting actions that have taken place.

A bid is a kind of pitch, in this case to the European Volleyball Association, as it was about a European Championship. In a bid you explain why you want to organise an event, why you think the Netherlands should host it, and you talk about how you would do it. You even include a budget already, which is a bit difficult because you don’t have any sponsors yet. But luckily you

THE FINER POINTS OF HOSPITALITY

With fifteen hotels and over a thousand employees, our people are learning, training, and perfecting every day. In order to make sure this all goes according to plan, Joan Hoekstra recently started as Hospitality Trainer within the

WestCord Hotels. She can’t wait to share her experience in the hospitality industry with (new) colleagues and offer a range of training courses. Welcome Joan and best of luck to you!

DARKNESS FOR A BETTER WORLD 30 March, darkness, one hour... Get the picture? Many hotels took part in Earth Hour, an international event that asks households and businesses to turn off the lights and other electrical equipment for a single hour. The goal is to do something about climate change! At Hotel Jakarta and the Art Hotel Amsterdam the lights were also turned off for an hour, and what’s more cosy than a candle-light dinner?

STEP INTO THE DUTCH GOLDEN AGE It’s hard to miss when you visit Hotel Delft or when you drive past it: the Step into the Dutch Golden Age banner. 2019 is the year of the Dutch Golden Age in Delft, and many events have been planned. The Dutch Golden Age was a period of huge economic, artistic, and scientific growth. Nowhere can you see and feel this better than in Delft! The city played an important part in the foundation of the Dutch East India Company and was one of the six cities with A Chamber of the Dutch East India Company.

SURPRISE!

Royal visitors on Ameland and Terschelling! On 27 March, King Willem-Alexander paid a surprise visit to see a variety of social projects. On Terschelling the King visited the Royal Netherlands Sea Rescue Institution (KNRM) Terschelling Paal 8 and the Natuurlijk Oosterend Foundation. He was also given a tour of the Terschelling Bunker Museum where over sixty volunteers work together to dig up and restore old bunkers. On Ameland he visited Solar Farm Ameland, Holiday Park Klein Vaarwater, and a beach comber’s shed.

AWARDS IN AMSTERDAM

We are so proud! We already knew that we had created something special with Hotel Jakarta, but since the opening it has been raining awards for the design, our inner garden and our Malabar sky bar. But of course we didn’t do it alone, there are so many people who have contributed to the hotel. So the following awards are not only for us, but also for all partners!

STEAK, MOVE OVER!

A week of awareness about our meat consumption, that’s the focus of the annual National Week without Meat. Meat-eating Dutch men and women were asked to skip the meatballs, steaks, and sausages from 11 to 17 March. Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam made it a little easier. With a specially designed vegetarian menu in Café Jakarta, guests could take part in the Week without Meat without cooking themselves.

WILL YOU JOIN OUR TEAM? How is it to work for an all-Dutch family business that’s making great strides? 4 April was the day to find that out during the WestCord Recruitment Day. Over two hundred potential new colleagues came to one of the four locations in Leeuwarden, Amsterdam, and Rotterdam for fun workshops, tours, or just chatting about a career at WestCord. We hope to welcome many of you to our hotels soon!

POPULAR BEDMATE (WHO DOESN’T SNORE)

Sharing the sheets with a Robot; it’s quite common at Hotel Delft, and it has been a great success! In 2017, the hotel was the first to introduce the innovative Somnox Sleep Robot. It helps people to fall asleep more easily and sleep deeper. With it, we at WestCord go beyond offering a nice room with a comfy bed. This high-end technology by Somnox enables us to offer our guests an even better night’s sleep. That is why we purchased five brand-new sleep robots to help you sleep even better at the ss Rotterdam, Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam, City Centre Hotel Amsterdam, and the WTC Hotel Leeuwarden as well!

BEAUTIFUL WORDS FOR LA GRANDE DAME

During the summer months, Derek Otte, Rotterdam’s 2019 city poet, can often be found on board the ss Rotterdam. Looking out over the city from the Lido Terrace, musing about his poetry. In the role of city poet in 2018, he wrote a poem specifically for the ss Rotterdam. It was called ‘In volle vaart’ (At Full Steam). As a special thanks to Derek, his poem now adorns the staircase at La Grande Dame’s main entrance.

BRAND-NEW BATHROOMS ON THE WADDEN With a (hopefully) fantastic summer around the corner, the WestCord Hotels on the Netherlands’ own sunny islands have to be in top shape. That meant a lot of demolition, renovation, and completion. On Vlieland, Terschelling, and Ameland, a large number of bathrooms got a big makeover. At Hotel Noordsee on Ameland a lot of work was also put into the new Junior Suites. Bring on that summer!

BRICK PUZZLE

As construction on The Market Hotel Groningen is progressing, work on WestCord’s newest addition is also being done in the South of the country. Verbaan Systems in Weert is producing the facade, the bricks of which will be applied in a complex pattern. Quite a job. Just be patient a little longer and soon this facade will set the tone for the hotel and Groningen’s city centre. We can’t wait!

17 March was the date when the book ‘Baru Belanda’ was presented at Café Jakarta Amsterdam, a culinary ode to Indonesian cuisine written by Pascal Jalhay. Different guest chefs, including Jaimie van Heije, Syrco Bakker, and Dennis Huwae came to prepare dishes from the book and talk about their personal connection with Indonesia. It was a great lunch with inspiring dishes. Our own chef prepared one of the amuse-bouches, Bebek Pelalah; candied duck, black nuts (keluak), and mushroom-and-seaweed bouillon.

TIME TO CELEBRATE!

AFTER CELEBRATING OUR FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY LAST YEAR, AS WELL AS THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF HOTEL DELFT, THREE HOTELS ARE UP THIS YEAR. HOTEL SCHYLGE ON TERSCHELLING CAN BLOW OUT AN IMPRESSIVE 25 CANDLES. THE FASHION HOTEL IN AMSTERDAM AND THE WTC HOTEL IN LEEUWARDEN ARE BOTH TEN YEARS OLD. TIME TO GIVE THEM THE RECOGNITION THEY DESERVE.

SCHYLGE The story of an enthusiastic young, enthusiastic entrepreneur on Vlieland also spread to Terschelling. Harry Westers was approached for a new hotel in a prominent location – by the only natural bay in the Netherlands, with a view of the Wadden Sea. Harry was enthusiastic and Hotel Schylge’s doors opened on 21 May 1994.

During its 25 years, the hotel stole the hearts of many guests. They also recruited top chef Ton van Scheppingen – he has elevated the restaurant to

fauna this region’s nature has to offer. Schylge is ready for the next 25 years! Of course we celebrate a party and the guests are also put in the limelight.

FASHION A new district was to be built in Amsterdam-West, just inside the ring. The Andreas Ensemble, with modern flats and a luxury appearance to put this part of Amsterdam on the map. One of the conditions was that it had to have The Emporio Armani fashion show during the opening of the Fashion Hotel

a big hotel to complete the picture. Harry Westers was up for it, but filling 260 rooms just before the recession was not easy. It all worked out and the hotel opened in July of 2009. Many photo shoots and fashion shows followed.

WTC HOTEL The WTC in Leeuwarden was under construction, and it needed a hotel. The management got in touch with Harry and that was the start of their partnership. In 2013 WestCord Hotels took over the exploitation of the Froukje State restaurant and moved it to the eleventh floor and renamed it élevé. We were allowed to take the Michelin star with us! In 2016 we started with the renovation of the meeting rooms, making it possible for us to receive 2,100 guests in beautiful new surroundings. And there’s more big news; élevé is going in a new direction. Less formal with a new look and feel and a new menu. Read more about it in ‘WestCord Times’.

In Leeuwarden there are also fun plans for their tenth anniversary. The now famous WestCord Thursdays in Delft go international! Well, almost, as we’re now starting Thursdays in Leeuwarden too this summer! We’re also presenting a unique anniversary beer during the anniversary celebrations. There will be an open day for neighbours and anyone who is interested in getting a look behind the scenes and other fun activities.

SEP 21-22 2019 THE AMSTERDAM RUN No list of the biggest marathons in the Netherlands would be complete without the Dam tot Damloop in the capital city of Amsterdam. In fact, with 35,000 runners it’s the biggest one of its kind. The 33rd edition of this runners’ valhalla will take place in September with a traditional distance of ten English miles from the centre of Amsterdam to Zaandam. For the youngest runners there’s a special Mini Dam tot Damloop!

BEAR ON THE RUN! When we say, ‘One of the most beautiful and certainly toughest marathons in the Netherlands,’ you say, ‘Where can I sign up?’ We are talking about the Berenloop on Terschelling – a running spectacle for the toughest runners. Face the wild Terschelling landscape, from the soft sands to the heart of the forests. Almost everyone on Terschelling is involved in the Berenloop: participating, volunteering, or spectating. And that shows! The smaller edition, Kleintje Berenloop (5 and 10 kilometres), is scheduled on Saturday 2 November. The full marathon will be held on Sunday. WWW.BERENLOOPTERSCHELLING.NL

THE MARKET HOTEL

MID-2020 THE MARKET HOTEL WILL OPEN ON THE MOST PROMINENT SPOT IN GRONINGEN. ADJACENT TO THE MOST FAMOUS SQUARE IN THE NORTH, THE GROTE MARKT. WITH NEIGHBOURS SUCH AS THE DRIE GEZUSTERS, THE MARTINITOREN, AND THE GRONINGER FORUM, WE’RE IN GOOD COMPANY IN WHAT THE LOCALS CALL ‘GRUNN’. A gas connection was not necessary, because it will be an all-electric hotel! After that we could finally make vertical progress. It’s expected that the highest point will be achieved before the national construction workers’ holiday period.

The construction site isn’t the only place where people are working hard. In Oude Pekela, where Harry Westers was born, they are producing the bricks for the hotel’s facade. This completes the cycle. The bricks are than applied in complex, prefab brickwork facade elements. These determine the face of both the hotel and the heart of the city. When they’re ready, this prefabricated facade is simply placed against the building. By early 2020, we’ll be able to go inside and start finishing it. And by mid-2020, we and Groningen will have another gem to be proud of.

KIDS & TEENS The sports edition! THIS EDITION IS ALL ABOUT SPORTS WE CAN ENJOY TOGETHER. SAILING, VISITING A FOOTBALL STADIUM, OR GETTING SOME SUMMER EXERCISE... YOU NAME IT! JOIN US!

FRIESLAND SAILING CAMP

The beautiful Frisian lakes are perfect for sailing. And don’t underestimate it; it’s a real sport that requires a lot of effort and that can teach you a lot. So it’s not surprising that there are plenty of sailing schools in Friesland that can help you master this fine art. Together with other kids your age, you’ll be enjoying a week of sun, sailing, wind, water, and other fun activities. Does this sound really cool to you, but you don’t have any sailing experience yet? In that case you’ll start in an Optimist, a small sailing boat that will make it easy for you to learn the basics of sailing. After that you’ll progress to a Valk, and when you’re really advanced, you’ll be sailing a Laser. At the end of the camp you’ll go home with an actual sailing diploma.

VISIT A FOOTBALL STADIUM

Do you have a football idol? Or are you a big fan of one of the Eredivisie clubs? It’s very likely that you can get a behind-the-scenes tour! Visit the Ajax dressing room, walk through PSV’s player tunnel, and visit the press room at Feyenoord. There’s a good chance the mascot will be around to take a picture with. Who knows, you might even catch a glimpse of one of our football heroes!

FUN SUMMER SPORTS Summer is the time when we all like to be outdoors. There’s always something to do; on a field of grass, on the beaches, or in the water. Isn’t that wonderful?

LET’S SAVE THE WORLD One cocktail at a time AWARENESS REGARDING PLASTIC HAS BEEN RISING FOR YEARS. NOT JUST AMONG CONSUMERS, BUT IN THE HOTEL BUSINESS AS WELL. IT IS WITH GOOD REASON THAT THE EU RECENTLY DECIDED TO BAN ALL SINGLE-USE PLASTIC STRAWS, CUTLERY, AND PLATES. BUT WHAT IF YOU, AS ‘FASHION HOTEL’, STILL HAVE A SIGNIFICANT SUPPLY OF STRAWS, WHAT WOULD YOU DO? EXACTLY, YOU GIVE YOUR LEFT-OVER SUPPLY OF STRAWS TO DESIGNERS TO CREATE HAUTE COUTURE DESIGNS! 2019 SPORTS TRENDS DID YOU ALSO START THE YEAR FULLY MOTIVATED WITH A NEW GYM MEMBERSHIP TO REALLY HIT THE WEIGHTS AND RUN 10K ON THE TREADMILL? THERE ARE BETTER WAYS NOW. 2019 IS THE PERFECT TIME TO CHANGE UP YOUR EXERCISE ROUTINE. THESE NEW TRENDS WILL HELP YOU EXERCISE THAT ARE DIFFERENT AND A LOT MORE FUN. SEVERAL CELEBRITIES HAVE ALREADY PRECEDED YOU, SUCH AS USAIN BOLT AND CARICE VAN HOUTEN!

#1 HIIT HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training.

it with pretty much any sport. For example, al-

A lack of time is one of the most frequently stated

ternate 30-second sprints with two minutes of gentle walking. The duration of the HIIT workout is also important: keep it up for twenty minutes! You don’t have to make it longer to make the workout more intense. Simply shorten the periods of rest a little, making the high-intensity intervals a little longer. That way you can easily adjust your workout to your level and goals.

ADVANTAGES 1. THE AFTERBURN EFFECT At first glance, it might seem strange the HIIT is just as effective as longer cardio workouts. Can you burn as many calories with a few minutes of sprinting as with a full hour of running? The answers is simple; yes, you really can. The reason is that HIIT requires a much more explosive, intense effort. Your body will take longer to fully recover after the workout. During that recovery period, you will continue to burn calories. That makes the total amount of energy used almost as high or even higher than with regular cardio. That doesn’t have this afterburn effect as much, if at all.

2. NO LOSS OF MUSCLE TISSUE One of the pitfalls of cardio is that it doesn’t just burn fat, but muscle mass as well. During (long) cardio workouts, your body will look for more energy, even taking it from your muscle mass. That’s not what you want. You don’t spend all that time in the gym to lose those gains running.

#3 YOGA All of us are always so busy these days. Exercising on top of all of that is simply not possible for many people. Yoga is a great solution as it combines exercise with relaxation. That’s why yoga is becoming more and more popular every day.

ADVANTAGES 1. MAKES YOU MORE FLEXIBLE One of the best known advantages of yoga is how good it is for your flexibility. Your body will become more agile and vital. This reduces the chance of injuries, and yoga will also help you to improve your balance.

2. STRENGTHENS YOUR MUSCLES Depending on the type of yoga you choose, it can also help strengthen your muscles. Certain positions have to be held for minutes at a time, giving your muscles quite a workout. Don’t be surprised if you feel sore afterwards! Your body is your temple; take care of it. A strong and flexible body is important to be at your best.

3. IMPROVES YOUR POSTURE Due to our lifestyle, we often have bad posture. We sit a lot and often hunched over. That’s generally really bad for our posture. Yoga helps to make you more aware of your body, and which postures are best for different situations.

#4 WORK OUT WITH WEARABLES Wearing fitness trackers, smart watches, heart rate monitors, and GPS devices are all the rage. All these devices can help you monitor your heart rate, calories burned, and time spent sitting. This gives you more insight into your daily activities and makes you more aware of how long you sit. That could be quite a shock! Are you already a motivated athlete, or do you find it difficult to get sufficient exercise every day? A wearable can help motivate you if you choose one that tells you when it’s time to exercise. You’ll get a sign from your wrist that it’s time to stand up and stretch your legs.

#5 EMS TRAINING EMS training (Electrical Muscular Stimulation) means resistance training using impulses that are transmitted to the skin via a bodysuit. Our nervous system sends this impulse to the major muscle groups, activating these up to 30 percent more than with regular strength training. The deeper muscles that are usually not triggered by our own bodies, will be reached with EMS training. Using EMS training, the body can produce as much as 150 times more muscle contractions compared to regular strength training. This means a 20-minute EMS session is similar in terms of intensity to a three-hour full-body workout at the gym. It’s the perfect way to exercise quickly and responsibly if you have a busy and hectic life and still want to get fit and stay fit. Several celebrities already use this technology, such as Usain Bolt and Carice van Houten.

Most of us are familiar with the Dam, the Kalverstraat, and the Red Light District. But those won’t be the places you’ll be visiting on Alternative Amsterdam’s cycling tours. They will show you very different—perhaps even more beautiful—parts of the city. This guided three-hour cycling tour of alternative Amsterdam has been specially designed (and priced) for small groups of up to four people. The best thing about it; the tour is always different! Is the sun out? Then you’ll be taken to spots off the beaten path. Discover live music performances, mini festivals, exhibitions, and outdoor markets.

When the sun is shining, Amsterdam comes to life in unique ways. This bike tour is the perfect way to experience that. But this is the Netherlands, so the sun can be a bit shy. Don’t worry! The perfect time to change things up during the bike tour. Alternative galleries, museums, and street art will be the focus now. No matter the weather, your tour will always be led by an enthusiastic guide who is passionate about the city. Whether it’s amazing street art or a coffeeshop with a unique story!

IT GIET OAN! Why wait until it’s finally cold enough to skate the famous tour again, if you can also do the ‘Elfstedentocht’ on a bicycle? From 26 to 30 August, the Friesland Beweegt Foundation will be organising the 11-City Five-Day Cycling Event. As the name suggests, it is a five-day cycling tour that will take you through eleven historical cities in Friesland. After an intense day of cycling, you will stay the night in the picturesque Earnewâld, resting up to continue to enjoy all Fryslân has to offer the following day. Prefer to explore this legendary route on your own? That’s also an option of course. But doing the tour in a single day does require some experience, as you’ll be riding a whopping 230 kilometres. Quite a challenge! In order to follow (almost) the same route on two wheels as you would on two skates, you’ll start in Leeuwarden. You will continue via Sneek to IJlst, Sloten, Stavoren, Hindeloopen, and Workum. Check; halfway there! Now quickly on to Bolsward, followed by Harlingen, Franeker, and Dokkum. Now back to the Frisian capital, and you’ll have more than earned the legendary Eleven-Cities Cross.

FAMOUS AND INFAMOUS; MARKERMEER LOOP The Markermeer loop is rightfully considered a legendary trip. Past dyke routes, winding roads in North-Holland. Better hope for a tailwind. The scenery at any stage of the route is picturesque and characterised by unique wetlands, wild reed fields, and expansive polders and farmland.

In addition to typically Dutch landscapes, this route will take you past beautiful places. Take the Historical Hoorn and Enkhuizen for example and let’s not forget Volendam. A great opportunity to take a photo dressed in historical attire and eat a herring. A full Markermeer loop means about 170 kilometres of pedalling. When you start from Amsterdam, you ride toward Lelystad. From there, you’ll continue over the Houtribdijk, in the direction of Enkhuizen. Back around the other side of the Markermeer lake and the loop will be complete. You can be as creative with this route as you want. For instance, make it a multi-day trip or do it on an e-bike!

‘SAIL IS FREE TO THE PUBLIC AND THEY CAN JOIN IN WITH THEIR OWN BOATS, THAT MAKES IT UNIQUE’

SAIL Our sailing heritage during a unique event

SAIL, WITH ITS DECOR OF INTERNATIONAL TALL SHIPS, IS THE LARGEST PUBLIC EVENT IN THE NETHERLANDS. SINCE 1975, SAIL HAS GROWN INTO THE LARGEST, FREE NAUTICAL EVENT IN EUROPE. EVERY FIVE YEARS, OVER SIX HUNDRED SHIPS TRAVEL THROUGH THE NORTH SEA CANAL TO MOOR IN AND AROUND THE IJ HARBOUR. BUT SAIL IS MORE THAN A FIVE-DAY EVENT THAT HAPPENS ONCE EVERY FIVE YEARS. REINEKE BOOT, THE NEW DIRECTOR SAIL EVENTS PARTNERS, EXPLAINS WHAT MAKES SAIL SUCH A UNIQUE EVENT THAT YOU HAVE TO GO SEE.

WHAT CAN VISITORS EXPECT, AND HOW CAN THEY BE PART OF IT? ‘The theme of SAIL in 2020 is “SAIL connects the whole world”. At SAIL, we show respect and understanding for other cultures. The programming will represent that. This tenth edition of SAIL will be a celebration for everyone: for all the people of Amsterdam and the Netherlands, and online we’ll be involving the whole world for this anniversary edition.’

AND FOR THE VIEWERS AT HOME; ARE THERE ANY LIVE STREAMING EVENTS? ‘The exact programme and how SAIL will be broadcast online is going to be decided over the next few months. The – technical – developments are happening so fast. We want to use the best and latest.’

IS THIS YOUR FIRST SAIL IN THE ROLE OF DIRECTOR? ‘This is my first SAIL as director of SAIL Event Partners. I was given the opportunity to build on the experience of Mitra van Raalten, director of the SAIL Amsterdam foundation. Mitra was one of the driving forces behind SAIL’s success in 2015. I don’t have specific affinity for nautical events, although I did work for the Volvo Ocean Race for almost five years before this. 2019 FOOD TRENDS 1. VEGETABLES CENTRE STAGE More and more people are switching to a (more) plant-based diet. A few years ago, chefs like René Redzepi and Dan Barber took the first steps, but more people are picking it up every day.

2. SUSTAINABILITY Sustainability didn’t use to be a big concern in the food industry, as we all enjoyed eating a lot of meat. But sustainability is becoming more important; in the kitchen as well. With circular cooking, you’ll be eating more plant-based foods, from head to tail and from root to stem. It also means using seasonal produce. Products that are left over are conserved, and you take more care about where products come from. This kind of climate-friendly cooking will reduce waste. Win-win!

3. SKILLS Boiling, grilling, and poaching are dated practices. These days it’s more about sous vide, smoking, pickling, and fermenting. Chefs use many more different preparation methods now. This ensures that menus have become a lot more adventurous, making it even more appealing to go out for dinner, or trying something at home. This is also great for vegetables. Because of their variety of textures, colours, flavours, and seasons, vegetables are perfect for different preparation methods.

PREPARING THE CAULIFLOWER Preheat the oven to 200 degrees. Cut the cauliflower into florets. Mix the cauliflower with olive oil and turmeric in a dish. Add a pinch of salt and pepper. Spread out the cauliflower on a baking tray. Roast the cauliflower in the oven for 15-18 minutes.

CHICKEN FILLET PREPARATION Heat your grill pan on medium heat. Grill your chicken fillets in the pan until you see the grill marks. Add the chicken fillet to the cauliflower in the oven for about 10 minutes. Make sure the chicken is done at the same time as the cauliflower. Season to taste with salt and pepper when it’s completely cooked.
