WELCOME TO ANOTHER NEW ISSUE OF HARRY!

Water. We’re all connected to it. Sometimes very visibly, sometimes almost imperceptibly. It takes us from A to B, it brings us peace and relaxation, it connects people and places, and it has been an important part of our history for generations. For WestCord Hotels, this is perhaps even more true than for others.

Our roots lie on the island Vlieland, right in the heart of the Wadden Sea region. To get to the island, you have to cross the water. The water brought guests to our hotels and thus literally formed the foundation of our family business. We’ve grown into a collection of unique hotels spread throughout the Netherlands, but that connection to water has always remained. From the Wadden Sea to the Frisian Lakes, from the ports of Rotterdam to the IJ in Amsterdam: water still plays an important role in many of our destinations.

In this issue of HARRY!, we’ll take you on a journey through inspiring stories, special encounters, and beautiful places, all of which are connected to this theme in their own way. We speak with speed skating friends Joy Beune and Pien Hersman, meet Douwe Bakker and Roos Wilmink – who each lost their hearts to island life from different perspectives – and set sail with Patrick Kooijman, captain at Rederij Doeksen.

We’ll also dive into WestCord’s history and our relationship with water, discover how sustainability and water conservation come together at our water tap in Hotel Eindhoven, and have colleagues show us their favorite spots by the water. We’ll also highlight the beauty of the Frisian Lakes, the surprising beauty benefits of water, and the many WestCord terraces where you can enjoy stunning views of the water.

IN THIS INTERVIEW, SPEED SKATERS JOY BEUNE AND PIEN HERSMAN TALK ABOUT HOW THEY COPE WITH THE PRESSURE TO PERFORM, THE ATTENTION THAT COMES WITH IT, AND FINDING PEACE ALONGSIDE THEIR BUSY LIVES AS ELITE SPEED SKATERS.

AS A TOP ATHLETE AND PUBLIC FIGURE, HOW DO YOU FIND PEACE IN YOUR LIFE?

Joy: ‘Peace of mind is truly essential to me. My life often revolves around training, traveling, and performing, so I consciously try to take out moments for myself. Sometimes it’s in the little things – spending time with family and friends, going offline for a bit, or just being at home. I’ve learned that you don’t always have to be “on” to perform well.’

HOW DID YOU EXPERIENCE YOUR FIRST TIME COMPETING IN THE OLYMPICS?

Joy: ‘My first Olympics were very special and really can’t be compared to any other competitions. You feel the tension and the attention of the whole world. At the same time, you’re just trying to stick to your own routine. That made it extra special. On the one hand, the enormous pressure, and on the other, the realization that you’re standing where you dreamed of being as a child.’

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE MOMENTS FROM YOUR CAREER?

Joy: ‘For me, the best moments are often the ones where everything comes together. A race where you feel that everything is just right, and all the hard work pays off. Of course, titles and medals are always special, but I also get a lot of satisfaction from continuing to improve myself. That process – and working toward a goal together with the team – is perhaps the best part of speed skating for me.’

YOU’VE ALREADY WON SEVERAL WORLD TITLES, AMONG OTHER THINGS. DOES IT FEEL JUST AS SPECIAL EVERY TIME?

Joy: ‘Yes, every title feels special in a different way. So much effort goes into it and I have to make many sacrifices. That’s why you never really get used to it. Some races remain extra special. You work toward those important competitions and try to be in your absolute best shape at exactly that moment. Then there’s the crowd and the feeling on the ice. Those are the races you never forget. The most special title for me was the World Allround Championships in Inzell. Everything really came together there. My family was there, which made it extra special, and in an allround tournament, you have to be good at both the sprints and the long distances. That makes it one of the best titles to win for me.’

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO KEEP TRAINING HARD?

Joy: ‘My motivation comes mainly from the feeling that I can still get better. I love challenging myself and discovering where my limits lie. Besides that, it’s always special to be able to compete for prizes and represent the Netherlands at major tournaments. That gives me motivation to work hard every single day.’

HOW

DO YOU FIND BALANCE IN YOUR LIFE?

Pien: ‘I try to maintain a clear balance between speed skating and my personal life, although speed skating is always my top priority, of course. My days often revolve around training, competitions, and recovery, which is exactly why I think it’s important to make

time for the people around me. Spending time with my family, friends, and my boyfriend helps me take a break from sports and clear my head. Those moments give me mental peace and ensure that I can give every training session my all.’

WHAT IS

IT LIKE TO BE PART OF A SKATING FAMILY, AS THE DAUGHTER OF FORMER ELITE SKATERS?

Pien: ‘Right now, I mainly see it as an advantage. My family understands exactly what the sport entails and can therefore support me well. Of course, people sometimes compare me because of my last name, but I try to follow my own path. I don’t really see it as pressure anymore. I’m noticing more and more that people mainly find it fun and are interested in my development as an athlete.’

LAST YEAR, YOU SKATED A 500-METER RACE UNDER 38 SECONDS FOR THE FIRST TIME.

WHAT IS THE NEXT STEP IN YOUR CAREER?

Pien: ‘That was a great milestone and gave me a lot of confidence. The next step is to perform more consistently at that level and continue to develop myself on the international stage. want to keep working on my technique and physical conditioning so I can skate even faster and compete for the top spots. I also want to keep improving in the 1,000-meter race.’

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO KEEP TRAINING HARD?

Pien: ‘I get a lot of motivation from the feeling that I can improve myself a little bit every day. Also, competitions give me a lot of energy, because that’s where you can show what you’ve been working toward all this time. Setting new, small goals keeps me motivated and makes me want to give it my all every single day.’

WHAT OTHER ACHIEVEMENTS WOULD YOU LIKE TO ACCOMPLISH?

Pien: ‘My ultimate dream is, of course, to qualify for the Olympics and win gold in the 500-meter race there. But right now, the focus is first on qualifying for the World Cup. I want to keep developing myself, keep growing as an athlete, and get closer to my big goals step by step.’

Hotel New York is an icon of Rotterdam. The building on the Kop van Zuid used to serve as the headquarters of the Holland-America Line. The special documentary Het geheim van Hotel New York has been made about the building, which will premiere in 2026.

FRENCH FILM

Lights, camera, action aboard the ss Rotterdam! Part of the French film, Avis de Tempête, was filmed on the ship in early 2026. The film tells a true story about the Mona Lisa, in which the French minister decides to loan the Mona Lisa to America. In 1962, the painting is transported on a steamship. ‘Through a former colleague with whom I worked at another hotel. She became the general manager of Art Hotel. Her departure gave me the opportunity to fill this position.'

WHAT DOES YOUR JOB ENTAIL?

‘My role involves being responsible for results, staff, and the guest experience. I ensure the hotel runs smoothly, including maintaining adequate staffing levels, while also making sure the team is satisfied and that the business is commercially successful. The most important thing is that the team enjoys working here, because that directly reflects on the guest experience.’

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO TRADE LIFE ON AN ISLAND FOR THE MAINLAND?

‘The hustle and bustle of the city really appeals to me. No two days are the same. You have a greater variety of guests here, which makes the work dynamic and challenging.’

ARE THERE THINGS YOU MISS ABOUT LIVING ON AN ISLAND?

‘On an island, things tend to move at a slower pace, whereas in the city everything is faster and more dynamic.’

WHAT ARE YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGES IN YOUR ROLE?

‘Managing various stakeholders and attracting enough business for the hotel. Additionally, it’s important to maintain a motivated and satisfied team so that employees can perform at their best. Ultimately, it’s all about delivering high-quality service, for both guests and the team.’

HOW DO YOU LOOK BACK ON YOUR TIME AT WESTCORD HOTELS SO FAR?

‘Very positively. I’ve been working here for almost five years now. If that weren’t the case, I wouldn’t have stayed. It’s valuable to work for a family-owned business where open discussions about the direction of the company are possible. The hotel is still growing, both in guest reviews and in team quality.’

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?

‘Working with people. Building a team that can ultimately offer the best experience to the guest.’

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ROLE IN THREE WORDS?

‘Dynamic, varied, and inspiring.’

HOW DID YOU END UP AT WESTCORD HOTELS?

‘I’ve been coming to Vlieland since I was young. During my gap year, started working here at ‘t Badhuys. I enjoyed it so much that I came back year after year. After finishing my studies in Groningen, I returned to 't Badhuys and worked my way up from a front-of-house role to a managerial position. Later, I was given the opportunity to get into human resources, which I’ve been happily doing for two years now.’

WHAT DOES YOUR JOB ENTAIL?

‘It’s an all-around role. I’m responsible for recruitment and selection for the hotels on Vlieland, HR, and social media. In addition, I serve as a confidential advisor and oversee the entire hiring process, from the initial interview to the arrival of new employees. I also coordinate staffing with managers.’

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO MOVE FROM THE MAINLAND TO AN ISLAND?

‘There wasn’t one specific moment where I decided to move to Vlieland. It actually happened very gradually. While I was studying in Groningen, I came here to work regularly and felt more and more connected to the island. Although still have many dear friends on the mainland – in Groningen and Twente, where I grew up – Vlieland ultimately felt like the place

I wanted to live. The peace, nature, and people suit me well. That’s why I finally took the step to make this my home.’

WHAT DIFFERENCES DO YOU NOTICE BETWEEN LIVING ON THE MAINLAND AND ON AN ISLAND?

‘Mainly the peace and quiet and the sense of community. On the island, everyone knows each other and is there for one another. In the city, it’s more individualistic. At the same time, there are fewer amenities, but you’re not isolated; you can always take the ferry if you want to go out and do something.’

WHAT HAS BEEN A SPECIAL MOMENT FOR YOU DURING YOUR TIME AT WESTCORD HOTELS?

‘During my time at ‘t Badhuys, I built friendships that still exist today. I find that very valuable.’

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?

‘The variety and the environment. work at different locations, which makes every day different. I appreciate the independence in my work and schedule.’

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR JOB IN THREE WORDS?

‘Hectic, challenging, and rewarding.’

to the Meuse: why so WestCordmanystories take place by the water

WATER HAS PLAYED AN IMPORTANT ROLE AT WESTCORD HOTELS SINCE THE VERY BEGINNING. OUR HISTORY BEGAN ON THE ISLAND VLIELAND, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WADDEN SEA. AND EVEN TODAY, A STRIKING NUMBER OF OUR HOTELS ARE LOCATED BY OR EVEN ON THE WATER. FROM THE PORTS OF ROTTERDAM TO THE IJ IN AMSTERDAM AND THE CANALS OF DELFT.

Coincidence? Perhaps. But it is certainly striking. Because what makes waterfront locations so appealing? For visitors, for hotels, and for the stories that unfold there.

WHERE THE JOURNEY BEGAN

Long before WestCord Hotels grew into a hotel group, baker Emo

Westers saw something others might not have noticed yet. More and more Dutch people were discovering the Wadden Islands as a vacation destination. The upcoming tourism to places like Vlieland led him to buy

Hotel de Wadden – located in a former maritime academy – for his son Harry.

But the island’s appeal had existed for much longer. As early as the nineteenth century, artists, writers, and nature lovers found their way to Vlieland, drawn by the tranquility, the open spaces, and the unspoiled landscape. The island slowly grew into a beloved destination for visitors who wanted to leave the hustle and bustle of the mainland behind.

And perhaps the journey there was part of the charm. As soon as the ferry left Harlingen, everyday life was left behind on shore for a moment. It’s a feeling that many guests still experience today.

WATER TELLS STORIES

If you look closely, you’ll see that many special places have one thing in common: they’re located around the water. Historically, the most important places often built up along the water. Ports, canals, trade routes. This is where people gathered, goods were traded, and journeys to new destinations began.

Warehouses, train stations, maritime academies, office buildings, and docks spread around the water. Some buildings played a crucial role in a city’s economy; others served as the backdrop for thousands of arrivals and departures. What they had in common was their location in places where there was always movement.

That appeal has never faded. Water brings vitality, but at the same time a sense of space. Perhaps that is why so many of these locations have retained their significance, long after their original function disappeared. Although their original function has disappeared, their character and significance have remained. At many of these locations, WestCord is now writing a new chapter.

It was no coincidence that the former arsenal was situated on the water. Via the Schie, goods, materials, and weapons could be easily transported between Delft, Rotterdam, and the rest of Holland.

HOTEL NEW YORK – STARTING POINT OF A NEW LIFE

From the former headquarters of the Holland-America Line, thousands of emigrants set sail for North America. For many, this was their last glimpse of the Netherlands.

From Java Island, the Stoomvaart Maatschappij Nederland maintained its connections with Asia. A place where travelers, goods, and stories set off for distant destinations.

As the flagship of the Holland-America Line, the ss Rotterdam carried passengers to destinations around the world and became a symbol of a new  era of travel.

WHY WATER CONTINUES TO DRAW US

A waterfront terrace is often the first to fill up. People would rather book a room with a view of the sea than a parking lot. And when the sun sets, we naturally gather along the beach, the

Together, the Frisian Lakes form the largest contiguous lake district in the Netherlands. Well-known lakes such as the Sneekermeer, Tjeukemeer, Slotermeer, and the Fluessen attract many visitors in the summer. What is the Elfstedentocht?

The Elfstedentocht, or 'Eleven Cities Tour,' is a famous Dutch tradition that takes place in the province of Friesland. The route connects eleven historic cities through a network of canals, lakes, and waterways. When winters are cold enough and the ice is thick enough, thousands of speed skaters complete the nearly 200-kilometre journey on natural ice. Although the last official race was held in 1997, the Elfstedentocht remains an important part of Dutch culture and identity. Today, visitors can follow the route by boat, bike, or car and explore the unique history, landscapes, and charming cities along the way.

PATRICK KOOIJMAN IS A CAPTAIN WITH REDERIJ DOEKSEN, THE FERRY SERVICE BETWEEN HARLINGEN AND THE WADDEN ISLANDS, AND ALSO SERVES AS A CREW MEMBER AND COMMANDING OFFICER WITH THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ON TERSCHELLING. HE HAS BEEN WORKING WITH A SALVAGE COMPANY SINCE HE WAS NINE; NAME SOMETHING CRAZY, AND HE HAS PROBABLY ALREADY EXPERIENCED IT. WHEN DID YOU REALIZE YOU WANTED TO WORK AT SEA?

‘Actually, ever since I was a child. We lived by the harbor on Terschelling, and from the age of nine, I helped out at a salvage company there. It just kept evolving from there. I always dreamed of becoming a captain. but I really started at the bottom: polishing copper, lashing lines, cleaning the ship, then becoming a steersman, and finally a captain. Becoming a captain was always a goal of mine. I had applied for the position once before, but there was no opening at the time. First I became a steersman, and after nine months a position opened up. I applied again, and that’s when I was hired.’

WHAT KIND OF TRAINING DID YOU DO TO BECOME A CAPTAIN?

‘I attended the Maritime Academy in Harlingen, at the Noordzee College, where I trained to become a steersman. But I had already decided: I wanted more! After that, got in touch with Nova College in Harlingen, where I enrolled in a program to become a steersman-engineer. We were trained as either a steersman or an engineer, for a ship up to 3,000 tons and 3,000 kilowatts. After that, I continued my studies in Delfzijl to become a maritime officer: both steersman and engineer, with unlimited sailing areas and tonnage. have been working at Rederij Doeksen for over six years now. Before that, I worked as a captain for Rederij Noordgat, the salvage company on Terschelling. In between, I also worked in the tugboat industry in Rotterdam and on an offshore crew tender in Germany. have had a lot of variety and have traveled all over the world. At

Arklow Shipping, I sailed on cargo ships throughout Europe. Then I completed an internship at the Dutch shipping company Spliethoff, where I continued to learn the trade on the job. I mainly sailed on the Open Ocean, traveling to Japan, China, Australia, and New Zealand.’

CAN THINGS GET STRESSFUL ON THE SHIP AND OUT ON THE OPEN SEA?

‘It always seems and sounds very scary, but when you are out at sea, everyone knows what to do and how the ship responds. All sorts of adjustments are made and measures are taken, which is why it doesn’t feel that tense. What has really stayed with me, though, are fires on ships. We have protocols for emergencies, and we practice them several times a month. That becomes ingrained in us, both literally and figuratively. But if I no longer trust the situation, we will disembark.’

WHAT QUALITIES DOES SOMEONE NEED TO HAVE TO BE A CAPTAIN?

‘You must be able to handle stress well. You have to stay calm and think before you speak. Sometimes a passenger or crew member comes to you with a question, and you first need to determine if there is something more to it. You have to look beyond the question itself. Personally, I do not really feel the pressure of being a captain. I have gradually grown into the role. don’t go to work thinking; what are we going to face today? You deal with problems as they arise. And fortunately, there are also days when nothing surprising happens. I am one of the captains who believes it is important to train steersmen well, so they can maneuver ships properly. I think it is important that they can bring the ship safely to shore in any situation.’

IS THERE A LOT OF VARIETY IN YOUR JOB, OR DO YOU HAVE A REGULAR SCHEDULE?

‘As a captain you work a set number of hours per year.

We have an annual schedule, and our shifts are spread throughout the year. When you start a threeday shift, it is nice to work with the same crew. But variety in the crew is also good, because you get to see everyone again. You know what time you start and finish and which route you will take, but there is no cargo more unpredictable than people. You never know how things will go on board. We have a very capable crew and excellent catering staff. They keep a close eye on everything.’

WHAT ASPECTS OF YOUR JOB DO PEOPLE NOT NECESSARILY EXPECT?

‘Of course, there is a lot of paperwork and administrative responsibility. On top of that, you also manage your crew. You are the link between the office and the crew. If there are questions or assignments from the office, you make sure they reach the crew, and vice versa. You are responsible for ensuring the ship is in perfect condition and that everyone knows

‘BECOMING A CAPTAIN WAS ALWAYS A GOAL OF MINE’

what needs to be done. Maneuvering is part of the job, but the goal is for the steersmen to learn how to moor the ship. The most important thing is ensuring a safe crossing. In bad weather, we assess whether it is safe to sail. We have set criteria for this. For example, in strong easterly or northwesterly winds, we consider the tides. Sometimes the water is too low to depart, or so high that passengers, cargo, and cars cannot safely board.’

ARE THERE THINGS YOU DIDN’T EXPECT WHEN YOU BECAME A CAPTAIN?

‘I never expected to end up working for Rederij Doeksen. I have lived on Terschelling my whole life and used to travel back and forth every week, but I always thought it would be a boring job. I thought you would just sail the same route all day long. But now that I am doing it myself, I think: what was I even worried about? I sail on almost all of Rederij Doeksen’s ships, and the routes change every day. One moment you are docked at Vlieland, the next you are heading to Terschelling. It is very challenging; no two days are the same.’

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO BECOME A CAPTAIN?

‘Follow your dreams. If you really want it, you can make it happen. Even if the journey takes a little longer, you will get there. Do you want to become a captain? Then follow the path step by step, from sailor to steersman, so you gain enough experience. You will get there naturally.’

CAN YOU SHARE YOUR STORY WITH US?

WHO ARE YOU, AND HOW DID YOU END UP BEHIND THE BAR AT CAFÉ JAKARTA?

‘I ended up at Hotel Jakarta through the restaurant manager at Café Jakarta. He offered me a job as a bartender. What immediately appealed to me was the hotel’s concept: a combination of Indonesian and western influences. That fits me very well as a person. That’s why I accepted the offer, and from the very first moment, I felt immediately at home.’

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO CAFÉ JAKARTA, AND WHY DOES THIS PLACE SUIT YOU WELL?

DOES YOUR INDONESIAN BACKGROUND INFLUENCE YOUR TASTE, STYLE, OR WAY OF WORKING?

‘Yes, definitely. I’m fully Indonesian and have been living here for about ten years now. In the cocktails make, always incorporate Indonesian flavors, combined with western influences. A good example is our signature cocktail, Sumatra. That is a fresh, fruity cocktail that combines Indonesian flavors with jenever. It’s truly a fusion of two worlds, which is exactly our motto at Hotel Jakarta: “Two Worlds Connected.’”

‘Café Jakarta suits me well because of the mix of cultures. You see the combination of Indonesian and western influences everywhere, and that aligns perfectly with who I am and where I come from.’

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE ATMOSPHERE AT CAFÉ JAKARTA TO SOMEONE WHO’S NEVER BEEN THERE?

‘The atmosphere is overall very relaxed and chill. People are friendly, and to me it really feels a bit like home. The combination of lots of green plants, wood, and water in the interior and exterior all comes together to create a pleasant, peaceful atmosphere.’

WHAT DO YOU WANT GUESTS TO FEEL OR REMEMBER AFTER AN EVENING AT YOUR BAR?

‘I want guests to feel relaxed and at ease. Just as I experience the atmosphere here myself. I also hope they feel the connection to the culture we want to showcase here.’

FOR GUESTS WHO DON’T DRINK ALCOHOL: WHICH NON-ALCOHOLIC COCKTAIL FROM THE MENU WOULD YOU RECOMMEND?

‘I’d recommend D’Gilis. It’s unique because of its presentation: it consists of three layers of color, representing the three Gili Islands of Lombok. When you mix it, you get a perfectly balanced flavor featuring orange, strawberry, and a subtle sweetness from elderflower.’

One of Sean’s favorite dishes on the menu is the vongole. ‘It’s the kind of dish where simplicity, fresh ingredients, and pure flavors come together.’

‘For me, the taste experience always starts with the basics,’ Sean explains. Many sauces and preparations are made in-house in our kitchen, with a focus on technique, balance, and ingredients. ‘You have to keep tasting and know what a dish needs.’ Does the sauce lack a bit of depth? According

to Sean, that used to be difficult to fix quickly, but nowadays there are products like Knorr Professional’s Liquid Concentrate Fish that you can use without losing the dish’s artisanal character.
