Little Mermaid Playbill

Page 1

Director Notes

The Little Mermaid is more than a story of adventure and romance. It explores identity, choice, and transformation in ways that connect deeply to our Christian faith. Psalm 139 reminds us that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made,” yet like Ariel, we can struggle to be content with who we are. Ariel’s decision to trade her voice for a chance at a different life serves as a powerful metaphor. In a biblical context, this echoes the caution found in Mark 8:36: “What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?” Ariel’s choice invites both cast and audience to reflect on the cost of pursuing desires without wisdom or guidance. It opens meaningful discussions about discernment, obedience, and trusting in God’s plan rather than impulsive decisions.

King Triton’s role as a loving but protective father reflects God’s guidance in our lives. The contrast between the underwater kingdom and the human world can also be seen through a spiritual lens. The pull between two worlds reflects the Christian tension between earthly desires and a higher calling. Romans 12:2 encourages believers to not conform to the patterns of this world but to be transformed. Ariel’s transformation becomes symbolic, not just of external change, but of the deeper question: “Where do we truly belong?”

For our student cast, engaging with these themes is especially important. Theater is not just performance; it is formation. By stepping into these roles, students are given the opportunity to wrestle with complex ideas, (identity, temptation, sacrifice, love, and redemption) in a safe and guided environment. These experiences help shape not only their artistic abilities but also their moral and spiritual understanding.

It is our hope that this story reminds us all that true fulfillment is found not in becoming someone else, but in embracing who God created us to be.
