West Australian Opera 2027 Season Brochure

Page 1

WEST AUSTRALIAN OPERA 1967 - 2027 For 60 years, West Australian Opera has brought audiences together through the power of the human voice and the sharing of sung stories. We celebrate this remarkable milestone with a season that honours the past while looking boldly to the future. From epic passions and tales of love, power and fate, each season offers an experience unlike any other. Because only at the opera can the human voice express the inexpressible, music speak beyond words, and stories connect us to one another. Only Opera

As West Australian Opera celebrates its 60th Anniversary, we present a season that reaffirms the enduring power of opera to illuminate the human experience in all its complexity, beauty and contradiction. A season that also honours the Company’s history while looking outward: to the artists, audiences, students and communities who continue to make opera a living, shared experience in Western Australia. This year, we journey through some of the artform’s most compelling stories, beginning with a new co-production with Opera Queensland of Mozart’s Don Giovanni, a masterpiece of seduction, deception, and reckoning. Bizet’s Carmen then brings one of opera’s most fiercely independent heroines to the stage in Lindy Hume’s acclaimed production, paying homage to the work that featured in WAO’s inaugural season in 1967. And we conclude the staged season with the Western Australian premiere of Puccini’s Turandot, a spectacular work of breathtaking scale, unforgettable music, and a timeless exploration of love, transformation, and redemption. We are equally delighted to present Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda in concert, featuring internationally celebrated bel canto singers Jessica Pratt, Alasdair Kent and Caitlin Hulcup. A rare opportunity to hear this opera sung by the world’s best.

Verdi’s monumental Requiem reinforces the power of the human voice to express the inexpressible, a work of profound beauty and emotional power that continues to inspire awe more than 150 years after its premiere. Presented in collaboration with The UWA Conservatorium of Music and a massed ensemble of Perth choirs, it promises to be one of the most powerful musical events of the year. Alongside the Requiem, we proudly present a new Australian work, Bilya, by Gina Williams-Ghouse AM an uplifting collaboration celebrating joy, connection and the enduring power of storytelling. Together, these works remind us why opera continues to resonate across generations. They speak of love and loss, ambition and sacrifice, faith and redemption, stories that reveal something essential about who we are. Whether in the theatre, in schools, in communities across Western Australia, or in unexpected places beyond the stage, we invite you to join us for a season of extraordinary and moving opera. Christopher van Tuinen Artistic Director

As patron of the West Australian Opera, I am proud to acknowledge six decades of achievement and cultural contribution to our State — as our state opera company turns 60. West Australian Opera has brought audiences together to share music and stories that entertain, inspire and connect us. It has built a shared cultural inheritance for Western Australia — connecting generations of audiences. This milestone season honours that legacy with a compelling program of opera’s most celebrated masterpieces alongside a new Australian work by Gina WilliamsGhouse AM, reflecting West Australian Opera’s commitment to both preserving great traditions and creating stories from this time and place. Beyond the stage, the Company continues to nurture the next generation of artists and audiences through its education and development programs, ensuring a vibrant future for opera in our State. As Vice Regal Patron, I commend West Australian Opera for its enduring contribution to our cultural life and congratulate all who have shaped its journey. I encourage you to join in celebrating this significant milestone season. His Excellency the Honourable Chris Dawson AC APM Governor of Western Australia

I acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we meet, rehearse and perform, in particular the Whadjuk people of the Noongar nation. I pay respect to Elders past, present and emerging, and extend that respect to all First Nations people and their continuing deep connection to land, waterways, culture and storytelling for over sixty thousand years. West Australian Opera celebrates 60 years of sharing stories through the power of the human voice. It is a moment to reflect on the generations of artists, audiences, supporters and communities who have shaped our journey, while looking forward to the stories still to be told. At West Australian Opera, our purpose remains clear: to speak to the heart through the power of the human voice. Opera allows us to connect deeply with each other, with stories that transcend time, and with music that expresses what words alone cannot. Thank you for being part of our story. We are honoured to celebrate this milestone with you and invite you to discover the extraordinary works and experiences that can be found only at the opera. Carolyn Chard AM Executive Director

The arts have a unique ability to bring people together, spark conversation and deepen our understanding of the world around us. For 60 years, West Australian Opera has played a leading role in creating these shared experiences for audiences across our State. This anniversary season showcases the Company’s enduring commitment to artistic excellence, presenting some of opera’s most celebrated works alongside a new Australian production that reflects the creativity and vitality of our contemporary arts sector. Audiences will once again enjoy outstanding performances from talented Western Australian singers, musicians and creative practitioners. Beyond the stage, West Australian Opera continues to make a significant contribution to our creative industries by developing local talent, supporting young artists, and engaging communities through education, regional and participation programs. These initiatives help build the next generation of performers and audiences while strengthening the cultural fabric of Western Australia. The Cook Labor Government is proud to support West Australian Opera. I congratulate the Company on this remarkable anniversary and wish them every success. The Honourable Simone McGurk Minister for Creative Industries

As your State Opera Company, we are proud of the role that we have played in bringing audiences and artists together through the power of the human voice. For six decades, artists, audiences, supporters and partners have helped to shape a Company that continues to enrich the lives of West Australians through performances that inspire, challenge and connect us. On behalf of the Board, I extend my sincere thanks to our patrons, donors, corporate partners, trusts, foundations and government supporters. Your generosity enables us to nurture artists, commission new work, engage communities and share opera with audiences across Western Australia. We are grateful for the support of the Australian Government through Creative Australia, and the Western Australian Government through the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport. We acknowledge with appreciation, the enduring support of our longstanding and generous Principal Partner, Wesfarmers Arts. As we celebrate our past and plan our future, we remain committed to ensuring that opera thrives for generations to come. Don Giovanni Temptation has a high price Don Giovanni thinks it’s just another day. It’s his last. Mozart’s masterpiece follows the infamous nobleman Don Giovanni, a reckless man driven by pleasure, power and conquest. He seduces, deceives and abandons without remorse, treating love and people as pawns in the pursuit of his own desires. His long suffering servant Leporello both fears and admires his master, faithfully keeping a catalogue of Giovanni’s endless conquests. But no one can outrun the consequences of their actions. Even before the curtain

falls, Mozart reveals Giovanni’s fate, as an earth-shattering orchestral chord signals the gates of hell beginning to open. Consumed by the arrogance that has defined his life, Don Giovanni refuses to repent, laughing at guilt, mocking morality and daring fate itself until the very end. In this new co-production from West Australian Opera and Opera Queensland, director Patrick Nolan reimagines Mozart’s timeless masterpiece, holding a mirror to human behaviour that remains captivating, provocative and unsettling.

Connecting communities through music

WAO SINGS is a three-year arts education program that brings the joy, creativity and collaborative spirit of opera to Year 5 and 6 students across three schools in the City of Swan. Led by Choral Director Dr Emma Jayakumar and supported by Teaching Artist Charis Postmus, students participate in weekly sessions that explore the many artforms that come together to create opera. Alongside singing and choral performance, students gain insight into set and costume design, stage make-up, stage management, storytelling and theatrical production, discovering the creativity and teamwork required both on and off the stage. Through repertoire in Italian, French, German and Noongar, students experience new languages and cultures while building

confidence, creativity, communication skills and connection. By engaging with the many elements of opera, young people develop a deeper appreciation of the performing arts and the power of collaborative artistic expression. In 2027, the program will culminate in a vibrant mass performance, giving students the opportunity to showcase their talents and share their learning with family, friends and the wider community. Generously supported by the Feilman Foundation and the City of Swan, WAO SINGS is investing in young voices today while inspiring the next generation of performers, creators and arts audiences.
