Breed Feature - The Alaskan Malamute

Please wear shoes with closed toes, for safety reasons we do not recommend sandles or open toe footwear while training

The Alaskan Malamute is a large, powerful Arctic dog with a thick double coat, plumed tail, and dark almond-shaped eyes Its coat ranges from white to black & white, grey, sable, or red, often with darker markings. Legs and muzzle are typically white Weighing around 45 kilos, the breed developed in harsh Arctic conditions, originally bred by the Inuit Mahlemut people for hauling and hunting big game.

During the gold rush in the late 1800s, Malamutes were interbred with other dogs to meet demand for sled work and racing By the 1920s, purebred Malamutes were rare, but breeding efforts revived the traditional line. The Malamute is now valued as a show dog and loyal companion.

Trainer Tip ~ Clare

Practice your training in plenty of different locations, if it is a new environment be sure to start off with shorter reps and plenty of high value rewards.

Trainer Tip ~ Jill

Short training sessions are better than one long session once a week.

Trainer Tip ~ Rach O

Remember - a big loud ‘YES’ when your dog/pup has done what’s asked, then instant reward.

Hold your lead correctly - in right hand looped through thumb, not wrapped around the wrist.
