Gems of Shikoku Japan's Hidden Jewel The smallest of Japan’s four main islands, the lucky travellers who choose to venture into Shikoku’s tranquil and glorious landscapes will find themselves exploring what has been called Japan’s ‘best kept secret’. Sat between the waters of the Pacific and the Seto Inland Sea, Shikoku offers a glimpse of traditional Japan, enchanting visitors with a slow pace of life that it’s easy to slip into the rhythms of. Here, spirituality is still an essential part of daily life, the 88 Temples Pilgrimage – a trail of 88 sacred temples that wraps around the edge of the island – a huge part of its cultural identity; among untouched nature that features wooded mountains, tumbling waterfalls, dramatic canyons and emerald rivers, you don’t need to look far to see why the warm and friendly locals are so in touch with the divine. Now is the time to visit Shikoku, before its secrets are revealed to the wider world.

Ritsurin Garden Once a private strolling garden for a local feudal lord, the tranquil Ritsurin Garden were completed in 1745 after 100 years of work, and was opened as a public garden in 1875. Sat in a picturesque spot in a former riverbed at the foot of Mount Shiun, Ritsurin is one of the largest gardens of its kind in Japan. Dotted with ponds and artificial hills, it is a perfect example of ‘ippo ikkei’ which translates to “every step, a different scene”. A mesmerising feature of Japanese traditional gardens, the landscape has been designed to change with every step you take through it. As you stroll, look out for the beautifully shaped pine trees and a charming teahouse, where you can pause for a matcha and savour the views.

Awa Odori Festival One of Japan’s largest and most famous traditional dance festivals, the streets of Shikoku’s Tokushima fill with dancers and musicians playing traditional instruments for huge and colourful parades annually in August. Around 1.3 million visitors attend the festival every year, but for those who visit outside of festival time, the Awa Odori Kaikan museum hosts daily performances alongside exhibits on Japan’s most famous traditional dances.

Matsuyama Castle Spectacularly perched on top of Mount Katsuyama in the centre of Matsuyama (fun fact: the city is the birthplace of haiku poetry), Matsuyama Castle is one of just 12 original castle keeps that have survived from Japan’s Edo period. It is regarded as one of the finest examples of a Japanese fortification; inside you’ll find fascinating exhibits of samurai swords and armour.

Naoshima Art Island

In the waters of the Inland Sea, Naoshima is an island known for its blend of art, nature and architecture. The island is dotted with contemporary art museums and installations including the Chichi Art Museum, which houses works by Monet, Turrell and De Maria, the Benesse House Museum, the Art House Project and various outdoor sculptures like Yayoi Kusama’s iconic Pumpkins. It was developed in the 1990s by the Benesse Corporation and architect Tadao Ando to revitalise the island through art and give visitors a unique experience.

Dogo Onsen One of Japan’s oldest hot springs, in use for 3,000 years, Dogo Onsen has a prestigious history (the imperial family bathed here) and a laid-back atmosphere. Legend tells that the waters cured the illness of a deity in ancient times; people still flock here to soak in the mineral rich waters of the many ryokans. At its heart is Dogo Onsen Honkan, a beautiful bathhouse from 1894. Its steamy maze-like interiors are said to have inspired the Studio Ghibli movie “Spirited Away”. When you’re not bathing, there are eclectic shops and fascinating museums to explore too.

In a huge country with such rich, ancient history, futuristic cityscapes and dramatic landscapes, it comes as no surprise that we are still discovering new and exciting places to explore in China. Whether you are a first-timer or have travelled to China before, these new destinations give new perspectives and deeper understanding as well as just being cool or great to look at – they are ready and waiting to bring you your next adventure! 8

Chongqing One of China’s fastest growing and most spectacular cities, the first thing you’ll notice about Chongqing is its fascinating topography. On the dramatic confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers and built across steep mountain slopes and deep valleys, it is a city of vertical levels, where neighbourhoods cling to cliffs and metro lines rumble through both mountains and skyscrapers. A metropolitan melting pot, the city blends flashy contemporary cityscapes with historic neighbourhoods and boasts a natural wonderland of rivers, forests springs, waterfalls, gorges and caves right on its doorstep. Here you can hop from bubbling, mineral-rich hot springs to the Panda House to view adorable bears, to dramatic landscapes like Wulong Karst National Geology Park, to the atmospheric streets of historic Ciqikou Ancient Town. Saturday nights must not be missed – the Glamorous Chongqing Drone Show is a light spectacular that takes over the night sky in the most magical of ways.

Furong Ancient Town

Zhangjiajie Zhangjiajie is a natural paradise; reminiscent of some mythical realm, its landscapes are like something straight out of a science-fiction film (fun fact: it is said to be the inspiration for Pandora, the setting of James Cameron’s Avatar). A forest of weathered spires, its pillar-like rock formations are formed of quartz-sandstone – something found nowhere else in the world - eroded over millennia by ice and plants, covered in thick, green foliage and often swirled in mists. Depicted in ancient Chinese paintings, at first glance you’ll understand why this scenery is so emotive; add in the dripping moss, fragrant plants and calling monkeys and you’ll find yourself transported to another world.

A historic town of narrow, cobblestone streets and well-preserved architecture, characterised by stilted wooden buildings, Furong may be atmospheric and lovely, but the fact it has a waterfall running through it makes it spectacular! Set in a glorious mountain-backed setting, it is also the perfect spot to experience local Tujia culture with friendly, local people, delicious local food and traditional crafts. This is a place to wander, along the atmospheric streets, to strategically placed viewpoints and even behind the waterfalls. Furong really comes into its own, though, at night when everything is beautifully illuminated. Entirely enchanting, the waterfall and traditional wooden buildings are lit with colourful lights, while the streets are strung with lanterns, all combining to create a fairytale ambiance. Visit in the rainy season, between April and October, to see the waterfall at its fullest.

Carved into steep hillsides across up to 70 locations in Dazu county, the Dazu Rock Carvings are a magical sight. Created between the 9th and 13th centuries and depicting a huge variety of subjects; with both secular and religious carvings, in all different sizes, showing everything from everyday life to people at worship, they give a real insight into the China of the past. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999 but closed to foreign visitors for years, the carvings feature up to 60,000 figures and are an outstanding example of religious harmony, blending Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian beliefs together. The images at Bei Shan are the oldest dating from about 892AD which, like all of the carvings, is in a remarkable state of preservation, with the bright colours used at the time still wonderfully evident.

The showstopping scenery doesn’t end there. You’ve got towering peaks, deep ravines, canyons and caves too, all of which can be explored in a variety of ways, some relaxed, some adrenaline fuelled. Whether you’d like to see the sights from a cable car or glass elevator or teetering along a glass walkway halfway up a sheer cliff, we can guarantee that you will be captivated. Discovering China: Our Journey with Wendy Wu Tours Former Race Across the World Winners Tony and Elaine Teasdale, zoomed through China on their first visit. They were delighted to take their time on their recent tour of China with Wendy Wu Tours. Here is an account of their adventure in their own words: to the calm beauty of a Taoist temple, where we learned about the principles of balance and harmony that underpin this ancient philosophy. His insight gave us a deeper appreciation of the spiritual traditions that shape Chinese culture.

When we signed up for our China tour, we expected breathtaking scenery and a deep dive into ancient history. What we didn’t anticipate was how much the journey would change the way we see the world. Over two incredible weeks, we discovered a country that balances timeless traditions with vibrant modern life — and we did it all with the expert guidance and care that Wendy Wu Tours is famous for.

Beijing: Where the Past Meets the Present

Our adventure began in Beijing, China’s bustling capital. Standing in Tiananmen Square and walking through the gates of the Forbidden City felt like stepping into a history book. The grandeur of the ancient palaces contrasted beautifully with the gleaming skyscrapers visible in the distance. But the true highlight was hiking along the Great Wall of China at Jinshanling. With mist curling over the mountains and the wall stretching endlessly into the horizon, it was one of those rare moments that took our breath away — both figuratively and literally! We’ll never forget Lee, our local guide, who cheerfully carried one of our bags over the steepest and most difficult sections of the wall — a true hero of the day.

We also sampled the city’s famous Sichuan hot pot — fiery, flavourful, and an experience in itself!

Xian: Warriors of Stone and Spirit From Beijing, we journeyed to Xian, home of the legendary Terracotta Warriors. Seeing the thousands of life-sized soldiers standing in silent formation was unforgettable. Our local guide brought history to life with fascinating stories about Emperor Qin Shi Huang and the discovery of this archaeological wonder. That evening, instead of the traditional dumpling banquet, we discovered a more modern side of Xian by sampling craft beers at a microbrewery tucked beneath the ancient city walls. It was a relaxed and fun way to unwind — a reminder that even in one of China’s oldest cities, there’s always something new brewing.

Chengdu: Meeting China’s Gentle Giants A short flight took us to Chengdu, the heart of Sichuan province and home of the giant pandas. Watching these adorable creatures munch on bamboo and tumble about their enclosures was pure joy. Our time in Chengdu also brought us closer to local culture and everyday life. Yangtze River Cruise: Sailing Through China’s Natural Wonder

From Chengdu, we travelled to Chongqing to board our ship for a relaxing and scenic Yangtze River Cruise. This part of the journey offered a completely different view of China — one shaped by tranquil waters, dramatic cliffs, and timeless riverside villages. As we sailed through the Three Gorges, we were captivated by the towering limestone peaks and mist-shrouded valleys. Each bend of the river revealed a new, breathtaking panorama that perfectly captured the natural beauty of China’s heartland. A highlight of the cruise was our visit to the Three Gorges Dam, a modern engineering marvel and one of the largest hydroelectric projects in the world. Standing on the observation deck and looking out over the vast expanse of the dam was awe-inspiring — a true testament to human ingenuity and ambition.

Shanghai: The Modern Metropolis

Our journey ended in Shanghai, a dazzling blend of old and new. From the colonial charm of the Bund to the futuristic skyline of Pudong, it’s a city that never stands still. A sunset river cruise offered the perfect farewell — neon lights reflecting on the water, the city buzzing with energy. We were also lucky to have Christie, our local guide, who gave us a wonderful glimpse into traditional Chinese life. A Special Mention: Ken, Our National Guide

No account of our China adventure would be complete without a heartfelt mention of Ken, our exceptional national guide. Nothing was ever too much trouble for him — he anticipated our every need before we even realized it ourselves. After our long day walking the Great Wall, he somehow arranged for a Peking duck takeaway to be delivered straight to our hotel, and even organized in-room massages that evening to help us recover. The Cu Chi Tunnels, located just outside of Saigon, are firmly on the trail for those visiting Vietnam because they offer such a unique look at the country’s recent history. During the war with the USA, Viet Cong resistance fighters dug themselves underground to escape regular shellings and created a huge complex of tunnels and bunkers; at Cu Chi you can visit a small section of it. As well as innovative and lethal looking booby traps and recreations of what underground hospitals and kitchens would have looked like, you can actually crawl through a section of tunnel like those used by the Viet Cong.

Vietnam’s most famous and tasty dish, pho is a delicious broth full of noodles, herbs and sometimes meat. Consumed in vast quantities across the country, it originated in Hanoi and the city has made a reputation for itself as the pho capital, so there’s really no better place to search for the perfect bowl. While it is actually a breakfast food, pho can be eaten at any time of the day or night and is served everywhere, from high-end restaurants to humble street stalls, every establishment with its own secret recipe.

Every Sunday Sapa sees an influx of people from the surrounding hill tribe villages, coming to the traditional market to sell their crafts and produce. Dressed in colourful, traditional attire these villagers bring with them a fun, friendly atmosphere, as the market is just as much a chance to socialise as it is to do business. The H’Mong and Red Dao are two of the prominent tribes in the area, and there is no doubt that you will be drawn to stalls of their vivid textiles as you wander the market. Easy-going haggling with market traders is a great way to interact and have a more local experience, and it’s an expected part of the shopping process so get stuck in and have fun.

1 Borobudur A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Southeast Asia’s great cultural icons, Borobudur rises like a solitary mountain from emerald paddy fields. Built as a representation of the Buddhist vision of the cosmos, it is colossal in both scale and beauty, its miles of narrow corridors lined with remarkably detailed stone carvings telling of early Javanese culture and Buddhist doctrine. Having survived multiple volcanic eruptions and earthquakes over the years, Borobudur remains at its most enigmatic at sunrise and sunset.

2 Mount Bromo Another unmissable sunrise is Mount Bromo, part of East Java’s Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. Set within a huge ancient caldera, Bromo itself, usually with some billowing smoke, and surrounding peaks rise dramatically from a blanket of undulating lava sand in the most picturesque of scenes. Easily accessible, come the dawn, you can watch in awe as the reddish rays of the rising sun creep across the otherworldly landscape.

3 Yogyakarta Yogyakarta is, at its core, ancient, and is the soul of Java, a bastion of Javanese traditional arts and intellectual heritage. On its historic streets, best explored by traditional becak, old customs hold sway; head to the Sultan’s Palace (Keraton), still ruled over by a sultan, for a glimpse at a bygone era in the heart of the city. Yogya is also the birthplace of batik, the fabric-dyeing technique, so there is no better place to learn about this heritage art.

4 Jakarta It would be fair to describe Jakarta as chaotically charming, a huge metropolis that really brings the energy. As busy as it is, Jakarta lacks the coldness that you’ll find in many massive cities, and is wonderfully warm, friendly and vibrant. Here you’ll find modernity and colonial side by side on streets that also boast sizzling food stalls serving up delicious local favourites. While there isn’t loads to do, every visit to Java should start and end here, purely for the vibe.

5 Semarang A fishing village then port for centuries, Semarang was long a stopping point for traders and explorers before it hit the big time under the Dutch East India Company who traded rice, timber, sugar and tobacco from here. The city today is a fascinating blend of Javanese, Chinese and Dutch colonial; while the colonial aspects are found in the atmospheric old centre, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is in the culture and cuisine that you’ll find the influence of centuries of Chinese migrants.

6 Candirejo Village The ideal place to experience local rural life, Candirejo is known for its strong Javanese culture and traditional activities. A break from modern life, learn about ancient traditions while surrounded by lush rice fields and rainforest, meeting local people and trying your hand at food preparation and traditional musical instruments. In Candirejo, the only way to travel is by horse and cart, so be prepared for a bumpy ride!

The world’s highest railway from Xining to Lhasa may be one of the world’s most iconic expeditions. Journeying across vast plains, through breathtaking mountains and even across permafrost, this rail journey is one you won’t forget. Guangzhou China’s third largest city and busiest trading centre, Guangzhou has long been an important economic powerhouse. Once known by the name ‘Canton’, today it is a fascinating mix of traditional and ultramodern, both easily explorable on its vibrant and sedate streets. From old qilou shophouses and traditional Lingnan architecture to Canton Towner and the avant-garde Zaha Hadid-designed Opera House, this is a city ready and waiting to be explored!

Today you’ll cross part of the Hong Kong – Zhuhai – Macao Bridge, to see the sights of Zhuhai, a city on the banks of the Pearl River Delta. Stop for a wander in the charming Jingshan Park, admire the Opera House and hear the story behind the Zhuhai Fisher Girl.

Day 2: Explore Macao Continue across the bridge to spend a day discovering the sights of Macao. A Portuguese colony for 300 years, Macao is a fusion of a fascinating culture mix and over-the-top glitz. Today you’ll explore a bit of history and a bit of modern, visiting the ruins of the Church of St Paul, one of the city’s oldest temples A-Ma, Fisherman’s Wharf and the iconic Parisian Tower. Return to Zhuhai

Day 3: Travel to Guangzhou Depart Zhuhai and travel to the city of Foshan. A hub of culture, the city is considered the home of Cantonese opera, Nanquan, a martial art, and lion dancing. You’ll spend your time here experiencing these traditions, as well as learning about Lingnan, a significant cultural force in the region. Delicious and authentic Cantonese cuisine will keep you fuelled throughout your time here! Continue to the city of Guangzhou, historically known as Canton in English.

Foshan A thriving modern city steeped in history, Foshan is considered a cultural and artistic hub, and a place of deep-rooted Cantonese and folk culture. Known for its preservation of ancient crafts, it has been a centre of the ceramic arts since the Ming Dynasty, is the birthplace of Cantonese Opera, plus is the home of martial art Kung Fu. Filled with lush parks and gardens, and a thrilling fusion of historical significance and exciting modernity, this is a city to wander.

Day 4: Discover Gulong Gorge Head out of the city and into the breathtaking landscapes of Gulong Gorge. Admire views over the canyon, mountains, subtropical jungle and rushing waterfalls as you step out onto the thrilling ‘Gulong Gorge Cloud Sky Glass Ba’, a series of highaltitude glass walkways, the reflective glass platform known as the Sky Mirror, a glass suspension bridge and the Suspended Corridor. Return to Guangzhou, where you will experience the wonders of the spectacular Sunac Circus.

Day 5: Travel to Shenzhen Explore the sights in and around the city of Shenzhen, starting at the fascinating Dafen Village, a settlement that is almost entirely dedicated to painting. It’s characterful narrow lanes and alleyways are lined with art studios and shops full of hand-painted oil paintings, from reproduction Van Gogh’s to made-to-order pop art. Continue to Gankeng Ancient Town, where you can experience traditional Hakka culture, cuisine and architecture. Then, in the city itself, wander through Huaqiangbei, one of the world’s largest electronics markets, and visit the Splendid China Folk Village.

Zhuhai

Day 6: Depart Shenzhen

Sat on the west bank of the Pearl River estuary, with views of Hong Kong’s skyline across its island dotted bay, Zhuhai is a coastal city packed full of things to keep you entertained. Nicknamed the ‘Chinese Riveria’, it is relaxed yet vibrant with lots of resorts, theme parks and cultural landmarks to discover. Head to the Beishan Art District, a cultural hotspot, to browse quirky boutiques and artist’s studios and dine on delicious catch-of-the-day-based cuisine.

NORTH INDIA Crowned by the snow-capped Himalayas, India’s north is home to some of the country’s most iconic cities and sights.

Attractions

Where to begin! The north is where you’ll find the famed Golden Triangle of capital city Delhi, Agra and the ‘Pink City’ of Jaipur. Agra is, of course, home to one of the world’s most beautiful buildings, the Taj Mahal, while Jaipur is the gateway to Rajasthan, a state of epic forts and opulent palaces. For wildlife, the wilds of Ranthambore National Park shelter Bengal tigers, while ancient Varanasi, on the banks of the holy River Ganges is India at its most raw. Up in the Himalayan foothills are the old colonial hill stations, like Shimla and Darjeeling, a fascinating slice of old-world Britain.

Food

In the north of India, you’ll be fuelling your adventures with curries that are creamy and moderately spicy, with fragrant, rich and nutty gravies cooked with ghee, milk, cream or yogurt and sometimes dried fruit. Rice only appears occasionally, while breads like parathas, naans and rotis are regular sides. Make sure you get yourself a tall glass of lassi for a refreshing and cooling drink.

Climate

Ranging from towering mountains to stark desert, the climate across north India is diverse, with the Himalayas playing a big role in weather patterns. Generally, as it is landlocked, winters are cool and dry, while summers are hot, with a monsoon from June to mid-September.

Vibe

The north of India is diverse and vibrant, with an age-old history that sits alongside bustling modernity. This is a region where religions were born, where many of the monuments are ancient, where the culture is spectacularly colourful and expressive, and the people are warm and outgoing. SOUTH INDIA A land of golden light and tropical atmosphere, fringed with paradisical beaches and dotted with laidback cities and extravagant temples.

Attractions

The appeal of southern India is more about it’s overall feel; that’s not to say there aren’t any attractions because there are plenty! Cruising on Kerala’s languid backwaters is a must-do experience, while the towering temples of Tamil Nadu are awe-inspiring with their glittering gold and colourful sculptures. The cities of the south have a completely different feel, some presided over by a variety of colonial powers (Puducherry was French, Cochin Portuguese, for example), many ports that traded spices, gems and textiles, giving them a more blended past and worldly appeal. You’ll also find hillstations nestled among vast tracts of tea plantations and, for wildlife viewing, the spectacular Bandipur and Periyar national parks, to name just two, where, among the steamy forests, you can spot Bengal tigers, elephants and so much more.

Food

Tropical flavours abound through southern Indian cuisine! Centred around rice in many forms – boiled and steamed and as rice cakes, dosas and pancakes, dishes also feature lentils

and plenty of fresh seafood. Coconut is used in all forms, both sweet and savoury, alongside lime, chillies, tamarind and curry leaves. Coconut milk offsets some of the heat for rich and fragrant flavours. Due to the plantations in the region, coffee is a popular drink; rich and full bodied it is usually served with hot, frothy milk and sugar.

Climate

Ruled by the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean, southern India’s climate is tropical with warm temperatures and high humidity most of the year. It is driest in the winter, with more rain between June and September.

Vibe

Gentle and relaxed, life in India’s south is more slow-paced than in the north. Living in such lush, tropical surroundings, it’s not surprising that the locals are so cheerful, friendly and helpful. There is also plenty of timeless history and kaleidoscopic culture here – make sure you see a kathakali performance – with ancient traditions still part of daily life and spirituality at its centre too. The mix of colonial powers that once occupied various cities and regions as trade hubs add to the cosmopolitan air. The best way to experience south India is to sit back and go with the flow, after all, Kerala is called ‘god’s own country’ for a reason.

Mongolia

Naturally Beautiful Nestled just north of China and east of the ‘Stans’ lies Mongolia, a country famous for its vast landscapes and nomadic culture. The capital, Ulaanbaatar, based in the north and home of founder of the Mongol culture, Genghis Khan, is a city that blends modern skyscrapers and traditional soviet architecture. However, our favourite aspect of Mongolia has to be its untouched wilderness. Whether it’s culture you’re looking for or breathtaking natural wonders – we’re sure Mongolia has something for you…

Terelj National Park is rich with towering mountains and forest covered slopes. Deep within this park, along the Tuul River, stands the striking statue of world-famous conqueror Genghis Khan. Nearby, you will come across the beautiful Aryabal Temple, a building filled to the brim with colourful murals and Buddhist teachings. We love how, in certain parts of Mongolia, you feel completely removed from the outside world and deeply connected to nature, so we have included premium ger camps with stargazing facilities on our ‘Best of Mongolia’ adventure to ensure you really experience the national park at its best.

The Gobi is a vast desert-scape filled with roaming camels, towering dunes and icy canyons and you'll explore it on an exciting four-wheel drive expedition, heading deep into its stark beauty. Discover the spectacular Yol Valley, full of dramatic gorges that shape the atmospheric landscape, and the sand dunes of Khongoryn Els. The towering 300 metre high dunes are called the "singing sands", due to the whistling sound that the wind makes when it blows across the grains. Here you can meet nomadic camel herding families and learn about life in the desert.

The Flaming Cliffs of Bayanzag are best known for being the place that the first dinosaur eggs were discovered and it has also yielded a series of other important fossil finds over the years. At this historic site, you can follow in the footsteps of pioneering paleontologists and imagine what it was like when they made these groundbreaking discoveries. The Flaming Cliffs themselves are a marvel in their own right, especially when the cliffs’ sandstone glows a deep, vibrant red at sunset, making them the perfect destination to pause after a day of exploring.
