I took this photo of Mt Fuji from my room at sunrise. We arrived the night before, it was snowing and murky and we couldn't see a thing so when I woke up and saw Fuji in the morning sun it was a real wow moment.

VICTORIA MEKONG RE VIE W BY STE VE ME ACHA M Journalist Steve Meacham travelled on the maiden voyage of the Victoria Mekong for Traveller. Wendy Wu Tours asked him to honestly answer these questions.
What makes the Victoria Mekong different to other Mekong river cruises on offer? The purpose-built ship sails along a part of the Mekong delta rarely visited by Western tourists but teaming with local life and colour. The itineraries - between Can Tho in Vietnam and Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia - are deliberately short (4 days upstream, 3 days downstream) to provide time-poor guests with an introductory taste of Mekong culture as part of a longer holiday in what the French called Indochine. The ship itself, though officially four-star, wants for nothing: spa, gym, library, huge sun deck, pool and the Mekong’s first onboard cinema.
What was the highlight of your cruise on the Victoria Mekong? Watching the constantly changing theatre of the Mekong from the privacy of your balcony is a constant joy. But nothing beats venturing ashore with a well-briefed guide. My favourite riverbank excursion was Tiger Island, a sampan ride from one of the largest towns in the Vietnamese
Mekong. The delighted reaction from schoolchildren emphasised they had rarely seen Westerners before.
How would you rate the rooms on the Victoria Mekong? This ship has 35 cabins, catering for a maximum of 70 guests - with one of the highest staff-to-passenger ratios on the river. All but a couple of cabins have private balconies and they all have high ceilings and a sense of stylish spaciousness. Very impressed: equal to the “five star” Mekong cruises I’d experienced previously.
What were the food and meals like?
the Mekong. It’s like going back in time, though Phnom Penh manages to be a surprisingly modern city while retaining its Buddhist and French imperialist heritage. Remember, too, that this is a mere Mekong appetiser. By the time the river reaches Cambodia it has flowed through Laos, Myanmar and China - beginning as melting snow in the Tibetan Himalayas. Superb - a blissful mix of Vietnamese, Cambodian, French and “Mediterranean”. Naturally, there’s an emphasis on fresh, local produce - especially fish (you’ll see scores of floating fish farms during your journey). Breakfast and lunch are buffetstyle; dinner is a la carte. But there’s always plenty of healthy and delicious choices.

MEET THE TE A M Q&A WITH DINAH SHAFRY, TAILOR‑MADE/FIT SPECIALIST Tailor-made specialist, Dinah, gives us an insight into her travel experiences and most memorable moments. Tell us a bit about your background in the travel industry. After graduating with a degree in Biology I came to Australia from Germany, on a working holiday visa with the goal of starting a career in the tourism industry. After travelling the country, I started off as a travel consultant in a small independent backpacker travel agency in Cairns just over three years ago. I further worked as a travel consultant in Sydney booking adventures all over Australia and New Zealand before commencing my career at Wendy Wu Tours fulfilling my dream of booking my favourite destination: Asia.

Many people ask me: “Aren’t you jealous of planning holidays for others while you’re here working?” – Absolutely not! It couldn’t make me happier coming to work every day knowing I’m planning the trip of a lifetime for my clients. I know I’ll be back out there travelling myself in no time.
How many countries have you visited? Which has been your favourite so far? I’ve been to over 30 countries and counting. Asia is definitely my favourite destination overall, I love the food, the people, even the smell on the streets from the incense. At a push I’d probably say Japan as a country, although it’s hard to pick favourites.
Top 5 destinations on your bucket-list?
What is the most enlightening thing your travels have taught you?
There are so many great ones, but I’ll never forget watching the sunrise over the temples in Bagan, it was absolutely magical. After having visited thousands of temples they kind of start looking similar after a while, but the White Temple in Chiang Rai absolutely blew my mind.
Life is short; concentrate on what truly makes you happy and value what you have. Material things don’t matter but living in the moment does. Have stories to tell, not stuff to show.
My favourite city is Tokyo no questions asked. My favourite landscape would be the rice terraces in Vietnam as of yet, but I haven’t been to China which will probably top that. As for the locals I’ll have to say Cambodia – happiest folks I’ve ever met!
You can’t leave home without…. Jewellery – I’m obsessed with it.
Do you speak any other languages? My mother tongue is German and although I’m half Israeli my Hebrew is very basic. I learned French in high school which I’ve pretty much all but forgotten by now, but you can add English to the list.
Top tips for planning a tailor-made holiday. Don’t limit yourself to simple itineraries, anything is possible! Have a look into our group itineraries to get an idea of the destination as a starting point. From there we can either make small tweaks and changes to that itinerary or plan a completely bespoke holiday. Any questions give us a call and ask away! You only live once, make the most of it. In saying this, my biggest tip is don’t fit in as many destinations as possible. No one can bring our tours to life better than those who have seen, done and experienced it all first-hand, our valued customers John and Margaret share their amazing Wendy Wu adventures Chile Top to Toe.
We were full of anticipation and excitement for our journey from London Heathrow to South America for our Chile Top to Toe tour. We had decided beforehand to use British Airways for two main reasons, one for the non-stop flight, and secondly for the chance to fly on the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner which did not disappoint.
Great First Impressions As we came into land in Chile’s capital, Santiago, we had our first glimpse of this fascinating country that we had heard so much about. Santiago looked wonderful in the morning sunlight as we touched down. Surrounded almost completely by mountains, it was quite glowing and magical. We were greeted by our local guide, Sergio. He was very courteous and professional in taking an interest in where we had come from and how our journey was. Sergio then proceeded to escort us to our selected hotel in the Merced 84 Barrio Lastarria district, right by the beautiful Parque Forestal making it an ideal location for our stay. As we were the first of our small group to arrive, we had plenty of time to relax before we all met in the afternoon for a tour of the city on a pre-arranged bus. On viewing the old and modern buildings in the city squares, the sports park, and taking a cable car ride up to see the famous statue of the Virgin Mary on San Cristobal Hill, we were given a great insight into what was to come during the rest of our trip. In the area of our hotel, many of the buildings were adorned with amazing street art making it a pleasure to explore on foot. The nearby Barrio Bellavista area had plenty of bars, restaurants and nightlife for the young and old alike and we felt perfectly safe at all times. The next day we headed to the coast to the stunning city of Valparaiso stopping at a world-famous vineyard on the way. Valparaiso is built on hilly ground so there

are excellent views of the Pacific Ocean from many spots across the city. There are cable cars to help visitors get around and there was even an updated one to transport us to the hotel in the restricted traffic area. This town is extremely famous for its vibrant street art and nearby is the resort town of Vina del Mar and Castro Island with its colourful stilt houses and charming wooden churches. The group said goodbye to Sergio and we started our journey to Calama. On this journey we were joined by many miners going to Calama for work in the copper mine so it gave us a great opportunity to speak to the locals.
We were guided in this area by George who was a member of the Civil Defence Volunteer Team and had plenty of fascinating stories to share with us. He was extremely knowledgeable of his hometown as well as the surrounding park areas. All of the hotels on this trip were excellent but in many different ways. For example, some were chosen for their stunning location whilst others offered fantastic facilities. But the hotel in Puerto Varas had it all – stunning views across Lake Llanquihue, the main town and the old fishing wharf, plus great amenities, everything we needed for a comfortable stay. George took us to the local National Parks to see the many species of birds and animals which reside in the area, and often stopped at llama farms whilst we were on the road. We were recommended to take in the views of the snow-capped mountains surrounding the whole area and it was spectacular. The early settlers of Puerto Varas were mainly German and you can see the German influence throughout the town through the different styles of housing, it’s so pretty.
Atacama Desert
Memorable Moments Calama is the gateway to the Atacama Desert so we left here for our next stop, San Pedro de Atacama. Here we were met by Aneka, our local guide. Our hotel was constructed mainly from adobe mud like many other traditional buildings in this area. This would be our base for the amazing Salt Flats – our next treat with a promise of seeing flamingos and geysers at El Tatio. Remember to look out for the famous observatory on the plateau on top of a far distant mountain and the extinct volcanos.
On reaching further south to Puerto Natales you will definitely notice a distinct chill in the air, especially after the 35°C heat of the Atacama Desert. We dug out our warm clothing which we last wore when visiting the El Tatio geysers at dawn – remembering at this point how extremely cold it was!
Nearby Moon Valley and Rainbow Valley were true highlights of our trip, both with amazing mineral deposits which were constantly changing colour throughout our visit. Our next stop was Puerto Varas, the Lake District of Chile. Here we headed to Lake Llanquihue to see the impressive, snow-capped Osorno Volcano which reminded us of Mount Fuji in Japan.
This was another interesting town with a lovely waterfront, and also the base for our boat trip on the Last Hope Fjord to see the sealions and the glaciers of Mount Balmaceda. The trip on the fjord was followed by a wonderful lunch at a restaurant on the return journey where we had barbequed lamb and it was honestly the best we have ever tasted!

The Torres del Paine National Park was the next treat with wildlife everywhere, numerous lakes, and mountains which made you feel like you were on the edge of the world. The weather here is constantly changing, snowing one minute and sunny the next with winds also blowing in at times, but always truly magical. The lunch today was truly exceptional with picture windows providing the perfect views whilst we ate. We were recommended the southern Hake fish dish from the menu, it was nothing like our Hake back home, it was delicious. After a short walk around the restaurant to stretch our legs we visited the Grey Glacier which we viewed from a shingle bar stretched right across the lake, taking in mini icebergs with a glacier in the distance between the towering mountains. One of our last stops was the Milodon Caves where a Mylodon (an extinct type of ground sloth) was once found along with ancient human remains and rock drawings. We all had great fun trying to identify the animals from the rock drawings. After the caves we even managed to squeeze in a trip to the ski centre on a nearby mountain where you can ride the chairlift if you wish to venture to the top – another spot for fantastic views. On returning to Santiago, Sergio met us again to take us to our hotel and was eager to hear about our trip. We had decided to stay in Santiago a little longer and we’re so pleased we got to explore the city for an extra couple of days, it was definitely worth it. With Sergio on hand to escort us back to the airport, our whole trip was so enjoyable and completely hassle-free.

TR AVELLER TALES BY PETER HARTNALL Returning customers Peter and Doreen travelled to Rajasthan in October/ November 2019, having first visited India in 1971, quite a few things have changed since then.
As the afternoon progressed, we gradually met others booked on the same tour as us. By the time of the evening meal, all of our group had arrived – 26 in total, including one other Kiwi from the South Island.
We travelled to Rajasthan in NW India with Wendy Wu Tours, a company with whom we have travelled with before and like.

We flew with China Southern (a nice ‘full service’ airline) to Guangzhou then to Delhi. Our guide greeted us at the airport, and we were taken straight to our very nice hotel where we spent the afternoon relaxing after our long flight.
This is not the first time we have been to India, we visited in 1971 when we drove from Bombay through India en route to England (it took us three months, mainly sleeping in the back of our car). Since then we have taken a few day visits from cruise ships to Indian ports (and surrounding areas) and a few years ago we travelled with Wendy Wu Tours in southern India. So, what have been the similarities and differences we have observed as a result of these various visits to the subcontinent? •
The roads have improved, more are tar sealed and now there are fast multi laned highways

We were on a round trip of Rajasthan starting and finishing in Delhi. Each night (bar one) we stayed in an hotel with an ensuite. These are not the rather featureless international style hotels such as Holiday Inn or Hilton – they’re much more interesting.

We started in New Delhi because it affords international access via the airport - Delhi is not in Rajasthan but in Uttar Pradesh.

TRANSPORT Although our day to day transport was in a very comfortable large tourist bus, our transport also included: A camel – not a simple tourist ride for a few minutes but 90 minutes travelling from A to B. We have travelled on camels before, but this ride seemed particularly uncomfortable as the terrain was over sand dunes, up and down so at times one was pitched forwards and other times flung back.
Interesting and memorable Yes!
But rather than we give you a blow by blow explanation of every town we visited, every site we saw, every experience we had, we can summarise by saying this trip gave us a huge variety of everything.

We stayed in what was once a Maharaja’s palace, a converted fort, a very modern architectural wonder of a building, some with multitudinous steps and others all on one level with lovely gardens. The exception was the one night we were ‘glamping’ in the desert, every couple had their own large tent featuring a carpeted concrete floor. The tent had electric light, a very comfortable large double bed, and a western style flushing en suite toilet. All three meals were included every day and naturally all were Indian – usually a buffet style so we could choose and sample whatever we fancied.
DELHI (2N) OVERNIGHT FLIGHT
A camel cart - which was unsprung and hard but definitely more comfortable than the camel’s hump! A steam train - definitely not first class, and definitely not for tourists but for locals. It was fun seeing the scenery roll
by and talking to the Indian local passengers on the train who were all very friendly. A boat - out on a lake to visit a palace built on an artificial island. Actually, there were two palaces on the lake. When the father had his palace created in the lake the son wanted to use it, but the father told him, no, build your own island and palace. So he did! A four-wheel drive jeep-like vehicle in the Rajasthan desert looking for tigers Tuk tuks - as we needed quite a few tuk tuks for our group the drivers seemed to think it was some kind of Grand Prix competition, and drove us fast weaving through the traffic, pedestrians and animals. The tuk tuks would overtake each other at hair-raising places. But it was an exciting experience!
ANIMALS We have already mentioned camels. In some places they seemed to be the main draft animals, sometimes carrying loads on their backs, but more often hauling heavy laden carts. Goats would be in flocks crossing roads. Ubiquitous cows and bulls seemed to be impervious to car horns or prodding sticks. Sometimes we saw donkey carts. In the desert we saw all kinds of deer, both large and small, brave and timid. We saw all kinds of birds, several types of monkeys who also were totally unafraid of humans, and at times rather a pest.
But the highlight was seeing a tiger. We had to be up before dawn and onto our safari jeep by 5.45am to see the tiger but it was worth it.

ARCHITECTURE
UNCATEGORIZABLE
We saw so much architecture which was amazing. How to summarise it? Impossible.
Some things we saw were at first an unexpected sight; a surprise but interesting because of that, these were:
We visited palaces with solid silver doors, incredible decorations, amazing views and the piece de resistance - the Taj Mahal. We had visited in 1971, essentially the Taj Mahal was unchanged, but the biggest significant change was the increase in number of people and the accompanying fear of terrorist attack. In 1971 we drove to the main entrance, parked, paid for our ticket and walked in. We had wandered freely. Now the number of visitors was much larger, on average there are 35,000 visitors a day rising to 75,000 on special occasions. When visiting the mausoleum inside the Taj Mahal, the route is clearly designated with barriers, no stopping allowed and no photographs. In 1971 we had walked freely and had taken photos inside the mausoleum. We explored the grounds and buildings, some areas were restricted, security guards everywhere but despite all of this we enjoyed seeing it.

A life-sized model of a horse with a long flexible tube over its nose. We were told in the past one army had done this to all its horses because from a distance they looked like elephants and scared the enemy.

Interesting street signs: “Drive carefully. 90% of all people are caused by accidents” and “Overtaker beware of the undertaker”
IN CONCLUSION This was an amazing packed to the brim, a fascinating variety of sights, sounds, experiences. Our tour guide was brilliant, food plenty, tasty, and definitely Indian!
ARTS & CRAFTS Besides the inevitable carpet shops, we saw quilt making from old sari style bridal dresses, a black smith making pipes for smoking tobacco (his raw material was old car springs!), umbrella making, silk screen printing, spinning and weaving. We were taken to a place operated by descendants of the artisans who had made the intricate stone pieces used to decorate the façade of the Taj Mahal. They were keeping their skills alive by making marble tabletops inlaid with semiprecious stones. We purchased a coffee table that features NZ paua shell inlaid in the marble, it sits proudly beside our armchair in our new retirement home.

PEOPLE When buying or simply seeing these crafts we met the skilled people who created them, we also met humble people doing humble jobs - pulling carts, selling in the market or carrying heavy loads on their backs. Despite the often-grubby environment, the women always wore beautifully coloured and embroidered clothing, and despite extreme poverty, people were just getting on with life.

There’s a phenomena known as sakura that takes hold of Japan at the start of Spring every year. It so highly anticipated, that the Japanese Meteorological Agency even forecasts its arrival. We are of course talking about Japan’s famous cherry blossoms, where the country’s cherry trees spectacularly bloom into beautiful shades of white and pink. Only in bloom from late March to mid-April for around three weeks from south to north Japan, this fleeting and soughtafter event has captured the world.
We all know what happens in the autumn; leaves change their colour before they drop. In Japan, this change of colour is hugely celebrated – in fact about 70% of Japan is covered in forests of deciduous trees and unlike the cherry blossoms, the sweep of colour change occurs from north to south and lasts much longer – around two months – from September in Hokkaido, to Tokyo and Kyoto by the end of November.
CULTURE The art of watching the cherry blossoms is known as hanami. As the cherry blossom season approaches there is great fervour in Japan as locals prepare for large picnic parties beneath the blossoms with their friends and families. Even companies reserve spots under the trees for their after-work parties! The Japanese will then drink sake and feast on bento boxes and pink themed sweets such as sakura flavoured KitKat chocolate bar!
HISTORY The art of waiting for the cherry blossoms to bloom stems from 1,200 years ago where its appearance signified the start of the rice-planting season. As times passed, its popularity grew alongside the philosophical beliefs of the Japanese, where appreciation of nature and the natural order is rife. Today, the few weeks where cherry blossoms bloom are the most popular time to visit Japan, but also its most stunning.

CULTURE The art of following the autumn leaves is known as momijigari. As Japan’s maple and ginkgo trees turn from green to hues of gold, orange and red, both locals and tourists alike travel around the country to be dazzled by the bright foliage. It’s a celebration of the start of autumn, and one which is now ingrained into Japanese culture; many wearing kimonos with maple leaf patterns while enjoying Momiji tempura – delicious deep-fried maple leaves. It ma not be anticipated as much as the famous cherry blossoms, but don’t underestimate the beautiful array of leaves – they’ve been written into many Japanese poems and novels.
HISTORY The tradition of momijigari has its roots in the Heian Period (7941185AD) where noble families and scholars would enjoy nature’s shift from green to gold. It was a tradition that the general public did not observe until much late in Japan’s history, in the Edo Period (1603-1868AD). It became popular to travel around Japan, so when news of stunning foliage reaches their ears, locals made the journey to distant areas solely to view them. Here, Michelle tells us about her highlights and just getting in to see Halong Bay before global travel halted. Vietnam had been on my bucket list for as long as I could remember, so when I booked it in October last year, I was so excited and was already counting down the days! As a solo traveller, Wendy Wu Tours was the perfect choice. As the time was getting closer, I was starting to feel some nerves. COVID-19 was emerging and my family and friends were a bit apprehensive about me going. I was keeping a very close eye on the travel warnings and praying it would still be safe to travel to Vietnam by the time I was ready to go. Come March and off I went! I left a very cool Tassie morning and landed in a very hot Ho Chi Minh City eight hours later. The heat literally felt like a slap in the face, and I loved it! First day, after meeting my fellow travellers and our tour guide Tuan, I embarked on what would be an amazing 12-day journey through Vietnam.
So many amazing highlights, however the things that stood out for me was the amazing food! I tried my first Pho in Saigon and it was delicious! Vietnamese food is yummy, fresh and vibrant. Other highlights included:
Towards the end the tour though, COVID-19 was taking off. A lot of restaurants and tourist attractions were closing down. We were the last tour group to go through Halong Bay before they shut it down. I count my lucky stars!

I first arrived in Beijing, China on 21 August 2005 – and I still remember it, as if it was yesterday. I did not realise it then, but this would be the start of a love affair with a country that still lasts today. I recall a New Zealand couple once said to me, ‘you will either love a destination or not, and if you love somewhere, it will get under your skin and you will never be able to wash it out.’ This is oh so true with China! The word China is derived from the Chinese Pinyin word Zhongguo, and originated around 1046 BC during the Zhou Dynasty whose capital at the time was Luoyang. Zhongguo means Zhong (Middle) Guo(Land) or as they liked to call, the Middle Kingdom. As the Zhou Dynasty believed Zhongguo was the middle of the Universe surrounded by Barbarians.

China has seven ancient capitals: Beijing, Xian, Kaifeng, Luoyang, Anyang, Nanjing and Hangzhou. So, a country with such a rich history and culture, really should be a must visit on anyone’s bucket list. my favourite city in China, Beijing. I have been lucky to travel to China over 10 times since 2005 and visit over 20 cities and locations within China. But Beijing holds a special place in my heart, as it has always been a city I can, and have returned to time and time again. However, everywhere I have visited in China has left a mark on my heart and soul.
I arrived into Beijing, to a rather old airport, lacking in air-conditioning and one that felt more like a giant tin shed, than the modern, high-tech Beijing Capital Airport of today. I was met outside customs by my transfer driver, who spoke very little English, but he did make me laugh. As we drove to my hotel the streets were dark and silent due to the late hour except for the sounds of the Russian Communist music my driver was playing. He said to me the streets might be quiet now, but wait until tomorrow morning, as a bobble head statue of Chairman Mao bounced up and down on the car’s dashboard. After being dropped off at the Rainbow Hotel Beijing, located a short walk from the South Gate to the Temple of Heaven, I woke the following morning to the view from my window of the early morning hustle and bustle of what would become

Here are my five reasons why Beijing is such an amazing city to visit: 1. ACCOMMODATION No matter what style of accommodation you are after, Beijing caters for all budgets and preferences. From basic 3 star to luxury 5 star, just like any major city Beijing has much to offer. 3. FOOD Everywhere you travel through China, there are delicious and unique dishes to try. In Beijing, a must-try is Peking Duck (now called Beijing Duck). Dating back to the Ming Dynasty, it was originally only served to the emperor, but today it is enjoyed by all members of the community and is used as a celebratory meal. Chairman Mao once said, you have not visited China until you have climbed the Great Wall and eaten Peking Duck.

The Lama Temple The only Tibetan Buddhist temple in Beijing, during the Ming Dynasty. The Dalai Lama of Tibet at the time authorised the carving of a statue of Buddha. Carved out of one piece of timber log, it could only be transported to Beijing during winter, where it was sledded from Lhasa to Beijing.

Panda-monium! Warning warm and fuzzy alert!
An update from one of our guides in China, who sent us a wonderful video. Joe in Xian recently visited the Terracotta warriors which is now open for visitors – doesn’t it look amazing without the normal crowds? As China emerges from a very difficult few months, we are delighted to see major attractions starting to re-open their doors, restrictions are being placed on the number of visitors to sites around the country. The Chengdu Panda Research Centre re-opened its doors on 25 March allowing a maximum of 5,000 visitors per day (they would normally see 35,000 this time of year). Our National Guide Alex has put together an amazing video giving us a glimpse of the centre’s playful residents during this quiet time.
