Year 3 Semester 1, Design 5 Dr. Federico Ruberto Studio, 13 Weeks

Design 5, framed within the concept of ‘prototyping urban interfaces,’ delves into the intricate relationship between architecture and urban elements. It seeks to challenge conventional urban typologies, exploring innovative design possibilities in response to current and anticipated urban dynamics. Thoughtfully, project “Time Transformer” addresses time management challenges in a bustling city center.

Adapted to modern work schedules, the project reconfigures public spaces to provide respite for office workers and laborers. Inspired by the discourse between Non-Stop City and Stop City, the project adopts an intermediary stance, introducing two systems—transitory and stationary—to bring in change yet maximize impact, efficiency, and feasibility in Singapore’s meticulously planned urban space. The key concept of duality is pivotal, evident in the invention of modular spaces featuring sloped roofs, offering flexibility for formal use or leisurely exploration. The project explores the nuanced relationship between form and time, echoing Kevin Lynch’s question, “What time is this place?”. Modular spaces are strategically organized, considering time commitments ranging from 5 minutes to 1 hour.

Conceptually, the independent nature of these time modules allows for adaptable aggregation, fitting any site condition. Three illustrations showcase ‘linking’ building typologies in diverse contexts—mixeduse, residential, and commercial—respecting site limits and existing infrastructure. In essence, this project initiates a discourse on urban negotiation, implementing architecture in-between existing buildings with the potential to positively impact established societal structures.

大三上项目,以“模拟城市界面”的概念为框架,深入探讨了建筑与城市元素之间错综复杂的关系。其旨在 挑战传统城市类型,激发突破性创新,以更好应对当前及未来的城市动态。经过一个月的实地考察和局部 城市痛点分析,本次提案“移行时空”敲定方向:致力于解决繁忙市中心打工人士的时间管理难题。

该设计专为现代社会的快节奏生活及碎片化时间打造,通过对闲置公共空间的重新分配,为打工人提供 一系列多功能可变幻的休闲娱乐场所。其项目灵感来自不同派系激进城市主义的碰撞和融合,采取中庸之 道,提出“动”、“静”两种空间系统相通共存的新型解决方案---以在新加坡已经高度规划的城市空间中 最大程度地发挥作用,实现高效性和可行性。功能与动线“双重性”和“灵活性”贯穿设计始终,这一概念 在模块空间的形态中体现得尤为突出。例如可供停留的坡道屋顶设计,便使内外空间下的两种使用模式得 以独立共存。由此,该设计的形式又与时间构成巧妙关系,即用时间长短定义空间大小,或利用三维实体 空间让虚拟时间可视可感。结合打工人现状,方案中模块均匀排布,提供了从5分钟到1小时的活动项目。

理论上,这些模块独立完整的结构可以使它们任意组合以适应任何场地条件。但本项目仅以三种情境为 例(综合区、住宅和商业街),在尊重场地限制和现有基础设施的情况下,展现“移行时空”的潜力和可塑 性。总体而言,该项目充满思辨,是存在于城市接口与缝隙中的设计,是一种诉求和希望,希望对既定的固 化的社会结构产生一点积极的影响,一点就好。

Despite the presence of a tness center and a cafe, they are somewhat overshadowed by the dominant car park function, receiving minimal foot tra c. Tra c congestion is a common issue, with people o en resorting to jaywalking across the road from the Guoco passageway to the car park. In response, the design of the 'transitory system' takes the form of an overhead bridge, aiming to address the tra c concerns and simultaneously activate the underutilized tness center and cafe. External Site Consideration @Tanjong Pagar Plaza e Tanjong Pagar Plaza is a bustling area, especially during lunch hours. However, on-site observations reveal that most visitors prefer walking along the street and accessing retail shops from outside, with minimal use of the main entrance, except for residents. e existing main entrance appears outdated and dimly lit, featuring a staircase leading to an underutilized second oor. ere is signi cant potential for redevelopment, envisioning an integrated double-volume space with upgraded stationary areas to replace the current stage-like seating. A transformative aspect of this proposal involves replacing the ceiling with glass, allowing natural light to ood in, and presenting an opportunity to establish access to the level 3 community void deck. External Site Consideration @Guoco Urban Park Guoco Urban Park stands out as a success story, drawing crowds on both weekdays and weekends. is adaptable space, equipped with shelter, fans, and audio facilities, proves ideal for hosting diverse events. Its strategic integration with the MRT station entrance, restaurants, and parks enhances its appeal. However, the park faces challenges, with congestion arising from the competing space requirements of restaurants and events, as well as con icting needs between transient and stationary visitors. Furthermore, in this highly commercialized area, the lack of free, self-serving spaces is notable. e proposed 'stationary system' within the passageway addresses this gap by providing a space for individuals to spend time as they wish, while also managing and diversifying the ow of people, e ectively separating transient and stationary needs. Internal Site Consideration @Guoco Passageway e current passageway, standing at 10m high, appears vacant and brightly illuminated without arti cial lighting. Despite the perception of being a wasted space, the glass-panelled li s create a visually open and interconnected ambiance, linking the underground shops. E ectively utilizing this empty space while preserving its climatic and visual qualities poses a challenge, especially in this box-like environment. e proposed design capitalizes on existing walls for structural support, introducing a system of modular spaces in glass with mesh-wrapped material. is design divides the passageway into three storeys, featuring overhead platforms that create ground space for the existing car drop-o function. Internal Site Consideration @Level 3 Void Deck e current state of the level 3 void deck reveals vast untapped potential. While a small children's playground is present near a childcare center, the lack of shelter leaves the space exposed, hot, and underutilized by residents. Even with furniture xtures under residential blocks, there is minimal usage. Interestingly, three void decks under residential blocks align, forming a linear track or suggesting a pathway. is serves as the initial implementation site for the "transitory system", fostering horizontal movement to create connections and interactions between three distinct residential blocks. Internal Site Consideration @Carpark e residential blocks are positioned above and traverse the retail space in the front, with the carpark situated at the rear. Tra c ow is somewhat intricate, given the alley between these areas, and the li of the middle residential block is positioned within the carpark. Unfortunately, residents of the middle block face challenges in accessing the community void deck due to its proximity to the carpark. As a conceptual solution to enhance mobility and space exibility, a "space li " is proposed, as the second part of the "transitory system". is innovative idea involves connecting the three li with xed modules, generating additional spaces and platforms for residents to engage in various activities. External Site Consideration @Shophouse Alleys Behind Craig Place Apartment, encircled by shophouse restaurants and bars, lies the sole paved pedestrian pathway in Tanjong Pagar. is secluded street, tranquil during the day and vibrant at night, hosts a discreet linkway staircase beneath the carpark, serving as an exit to the main road. e convergence of several shophouse back alleys, characterized by uneven typography and adorned with mature trees in the courtyard, creates intimate spaces for shophouse workers to enjoy brief respites. Inspired by this setting, the proposed "transitory system" is strategically positioned here, its track hovering above the back alleys, providing shelter and establishing a third space for these workers. Capitalizing on surplus carpark space, two storeys at the corner of the carpark are repurposed as the "stationary system," serving as an indoor garden—a shared urban living room for nearby shophouse workers to savor their precious micro rest time. In the proposed design intervention, the existing footpath is reimagined as multi-level passage. ese three storeys o er varied environments for di erent activity durations. rst level provides easy access for short activities, while higher levels o er quieter surroundings and scenic views, ideal for longer engagements. Existing li can be repurposed to serve levels 2 and 3. Furthermore, existing entrance overhangs and garden areas can be creatively transformed into shared spaces with comfortable seating. is design is an optimization and integration of existing site condition. Current programs are kept. Passengers can still walk through and cars can still drive in. Creating modular system presents the challenge of harmonizing circulation and spatial considerations Central to this design is the concept of duality o ering two distinct modes of time utilization. rst mode involves purposeful navigation directly to speci activity rooms, driven by targeted goals. e second mode encourages more leisurely experience, allowing individuals to meander freely and casually explore the roo op. To facilitate this, the roofs feature sloped surfaces that create cozy, lounge-like pockets of space, inviting people to gather and interact. Located beneath Guoco Tower and extending across Wallich Street to connect with an underutilized tness center within a car park, the project repurposes neglected passageways into valuable in-between spaces. ese spaces cater to the needs of lower-middle-class individuals who o en have short breaks, ranging from 5 minutes to 1 hour, amidst their busy routines. e project's goal is to o er intangible bene ts to both society and individuals, such as happiness, knowledge, or the opportunity to make new friends. It strives to provide solace within the bustling urban landscape and create a sense of belonging through simple and short activities aligned with individuals' genuine interests. As the name suggests, "Time Transformer" aims to revolutionize the monotonous lives of o ce workers by introducing modular spaces and programs that can adapt and change dynamically based on events and needs. While the initially box-like passageway may seem limiting, it provides a unique opportunity for structural support to design modular units that move along tracks in an organized grid layout. By breaking down the vast empty space into individual rooms, a cozy ambiance is curated, and the ceiling is transformed into an integral part of the design. Rather than randomly shaping forms, this design features a distinctive sloped walkable roo op that caters to two contrasting ways of spending time: leisurely and relaxed versus targeted and purposeful. rough creative integration of circulation and program, the "Time Transformer" project not only optimizes underused space but also elevates the system to propose a new way of life that embraces change and innovation. Internally, the aim is to preserve the passageway's luminous and transparent aesthetic. Modular rooms are constructed using glass panels supported by metal mesh for structural integrity and privacy. e design prioritizes enhanced interconnectivity within this shared space. In the outdoor setting of the transitory system, durable and lightweight materials are ideal for the modules, allowing for exible programming. e modules can be combined in various ways, with a weekly changing layout to create visual interest, attracting footfall for events, exhibitions, and sales. RAIN RHAPSODY 雨天狂想曲

Year 2 Semester 2, Design 4 Prof. Cheah Kok Ming Studio, 13 Weeks

In Design 4, under the big theme of environmental design, building facade, as an architectural interface between shelter and the natural climate, is first studied and understood in sectional layers to achieve microclimatic performative results. Inspired by David Orr on the theory of architecture as pedagogy, this project added value by exploring the possibility to integrate teacher’s apprentice with facade design such that architecture is able to perform, curate, express, narrate, foster and engage users or to be more case-specific, primary and kindergarten students of Jurong West Primary School.

“Rain Rhapsody” tapped into kids’ fantasy with tropical rain to create a whole system of water-activated musical glass facade. In each step from rain harvesting to rain manipulation, kids would be engaged in learning through five senses. The result is a special external building skin that deals with climatic conditions including heat, glare and flood in a positive space that facilitates learning and can be used for various activities. During the design process, it is part of the journey to resolve conflicts in terms of quantitative and qualitative performance aspects, as well as document and evaluate experimentations through proof of concept.

以环境设计为课题,大二下学期项目聚焦建筑立面,对其进行剖面层次的深度思考:即建筑立面,并非平 面,而是存在于室内居住空间与外部自然气候之间的三维立体建筑空间,可以通过材料的组合运用及动态 开合来实现微观气候调控的效果。基于对此次场地-裕廊西小学的综合考量以及用户画像的理解,本项 目特别提出将立面设计与教学器具进行融合的大胆设想,让建筑成为教育的一部分,让建筑立面对外部 环境的感应和变化成为最生动的实验,自然而然地吸引孩子们的注意力并传授知识。

于是,“雨天狂想曲”满足了孩子们对热带雨的奇幻想象,为其精心打造了一整套由雨水激活的玻璃音乐 墙。敲击盛有雨水的玻璃外墙,就可以创造美妙的音乐。这样,雨天不再是所有阴郁的代名词。雨天,会是 游戏开启的机关,会充满欢声笑语!在从收集雨水到与水互动的每一步中,孩子的五感都将参与学习。本 项目从玻璃与水的碰撞中得到灵感,对玻璃材料颜色和纹理的遮光性能进行进一步实验探究,兼顾物理 环境层面的的宜居性和心理学角度的舒适度。同时尝试多种动态排列组合,特别关注各年级学生的身高 尺度,以达到气候调节、教学娱乐、资源节约等多层功能的高度整合。

Add di erent amount of water to a set of glass cups. e more water added, the lower the pitch. Tuning by adjusting the water level. • Tabbing the side of the glass cups will generate “water xylophone”; rubbing the wet nger around the rim of a glass produces an ethereal tone, creating a “glass harmonica”. Vibration, Frequency, Resonance, Pitch Music is created by glass cups containing water due to resonance. Resonance in physics is a phenomenon in which an external force or a vibrating system forces another system around it to vibrate with greater amplitude at a speci c frequency of operation. Factors that a ect the tone and pitch of the glass: the quality of glass, its thickness, its shape, and amount of water inside. Glass cup with less water will produce a higher pitch. Rounded glass with bigger openings creates better sound quality. Rectangular shapes tend to produce more complex harmonic spectra because of their irregular and uneven surface areas. Glass cups can be rotated to discard water or change to an other section with a higher pitch. Seven glass cups are designed as one set to give seven musi cal notes (from right to le , do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti) in two sections. Only one end of the glass can be hold or supported so that the vibration and the sound quality would not be a ected. us, the “one up one down” composition is invented with two glass cups joined together and supported at the solid middle part to balance the weight. Harvesting or collecting rainwater Directing the water ow using a series of connected cups or channels Dispersing the water into a collection or storage system e rain collection roof could be at or has a downwards or upwards slope. ese three pro les have di erent sun-shading e ectiveness. While an upwards slope invites more sunlight and reduces less sun glare on sunny days, it can work better on rainy days for rain harvesting. All the rainwater will be directed to the pipes and ow into the glass cup instruments, with no extra chain of rain generated along the roof edge. Children can be better protected from the rain. Another layer of music could be added by changing the roof to a hollow material so as to simulate sound of a the rain drum. Rainwaves by Studio Vallbo used steel to create 25 rain drums with di erent tones. Rainwater that over ows could also be used to water plants in the little garden.
Tap Closed Tap Open On non-rainy days, children can add water to the glass cups and use turn the tap to adjust the water level so as to obtain desirable tunes. A glass cup lled with water denotes its lowest note. When water drains slowly, the glass cup is tuned to a higher note.
is project aims to address two challenges: the intense morning glare lasting for three hours on sunny days and the dullness of rainy days. e proposed solution is a facade design that creatively manages sunlight to provide shade and visual interest, while also incorporating rainwater collection and playfulness through the use of musical glass rain chains. URBAN RESPIRATION 城市呼吸

Design 3 seizes the collective dwelling building project as an opportunity to introduce modular aggregation as a key design strategy. From micro (housing unit cells) to macro (clusters forming building blocks) and eventually to the mega level, the core theme revolves around understanding the concept of “void.” In the “Urban Respiration” proposal, void is defined as flexible space connected to the external natural environment and the neighborhood. This connection, both physical and visual, addresses the crucial need for interaction between individuals and nature, as well as among different social groups, particularly in the challenging context of pandemic lockdowns.

Through in-depth ergonomic studies, considering human scale, and numerous spatial configuration iterations, three cell types with semi-open void spaces are derived. These are strategically combined with a critical reflection on structure, in-between spaces, and circulation. The result is an approximately 40-meter-high residential tower, exhibiting a rotational symmetrical X shape through repetitive aggregation. This design serves as a critical response to both climatic and contextual site conditions, maximizing green common spaces to enhance neighborhood bonding. The ultimate aim is to create an oasis-like kampong community in a vertical setting.

该提案通过对人体工学的研究,在设计中充分考虑人体活动尺度并尝试了大量的空间整合方式,首先优选 出三种具有半开放空间的单元模块类型;而后在模块的进一步排列组合中兼顾空间结构的高效性与功能 动线的合理性,不断优化改进,最终形成了一座近40米高、X形旋转对称的集合住宅楼,并在其27户单元模 块中包含了一组茶室和微型书屋,均可通过三层的中央空中公园步行到达。总体来讲,“城市呼吸”体现了 对气候和场地条件的综合性考量和批判性回应,最大程度地增加了绿色公共空间以加强邻里互动,以求 在高楼耸立的城市中心营造一片绿洲,重现甘榜时代居民之间那种肝胆相照、守望互助的友爱精神。

Most of the time, the site is under the shadow cast by surrounding high-rise buildings. ere are only 3 hours a day when the site is fully exposed to sunlight, from 0930 to 1100 and from 1230 to 1400. Surface Wind e site is divided into four quadrants. C is the hottest region as it is heated by the west sun. In the hottest month which is June, wind direction is from C to A. Sunset N Sunrise Located at the boundary between two extreme conditions --- low rise fabric of shophouses and the high rise CBD, the site has special physical environmental conditions --- unevenly heated and mostly in the shade. If shophouses represent the nostalgic past, CBD re ecting our materialistic present, then “Urban Respiration” is a proposal for the future, a more ecocentric and less hectic future. Drawing attention to the green spaces ranging from the Tras Link Park, this proposal aims to explore the inhabitable tower as a possible vertical garden for the highly urbanized city, at the same time emphasizing on the kampung-like interaction between neighbors. e resultant is a hopeful wish for a comfortable way of life-- to catch a breath, to socialize and to enjoy.

Year 3 Semester 1, “Introduction to Urbansim” Module, 6 Weeks

Envisioned with the “Urban Gallery” concept, this prototyping project can be considered to act as an incubator for urban evolution. It begins by identifying urban issues through “Mini-scenarios” and “Operational Fields”, followed by the improvisation and development of prototypes. To enhance the learning process and project feasibility, categorizing strategies like EOTM (Erasure, Origination, Transformation, and Migration) and BEFI (Branding, Earth, Flow, and Incorporation) are employed.

The proposal ‘Ritualscape’ addresses the joss paper burning issue in Singapore’s residential areas. Rooted in cultural understanding, it acknowledges its adverse impact on the natural environment and potential effects on social cohesion. Aligning with the seasonal nature of the ritual and adhering to the urban theory of the ‘Right to the City,’ the final prototype designs a multi-use space accommodating ritual practices and other public bonding programs throughout the year. Notably, the design details prioritize sustainability and foster interactions between humanity and nature.

本项目借用“现象展览”的概念,意在聚焦生活情景,陈列社会问题,筹集妙解巧思,以推动城市演变。其 过程包括三步:一,倾听群众反馈,剖析不文明现象;二,研讨介入方向,确定实施范围;三,发散创意思 维,优化设计方案。汇报形式遵循 EOTM 和 BEFI 的理论框架。

其中,“文明祭祀公共设施”这一提案在民俗文化领域重点关注了新加坡住宅区内的燃香烧纸的问题。该 提案经过深入调查,充分理解烧纸作为传统祭祀行为背后重要的内涵和意义,同时对其带来的环境污染 和潜在社会问题作出了客观评价。利用烧纸行为周期性的特质(主要发生在清明节前后)以及对公共空间 使用规划的理解,最终版方案设计了一个双层复式多功能空间,方便过滤吸收烧纸所带来的烟尘,并且可 以作为人工自然景观,在一年中的其他时间段展现不同的功能和状态。值得一提的是,本次设计在材料选 择等方面注重环保和可持续性,同时在功能方面考虑到人类以外的用户需求及利益(例如鸟类喜欢吃祭 品、树木怕热喜温),有助于促进人与自然的和谐共处。

TROPICALIZATION OF THE HOUSE OF CARDS 欧洲住宅的热带化改造

Year 2 Semester 2, “Climate, Ecology & Architecture” Module, 4 Weeks

The project, titled ‘Tropicalization of the House of Cards,’ forms one of the three exercises within the supplementary architecture module ‘Climate, Ecology & Architecture.’ This module places a strong emphasis on climate-informed passive design strategies to achieve optimal thermal comfort. The subsequent pages are extracted from a comprehensive report, organized into three chapters. The initial chapter focuses on understanding the original design intention and efficiency of the House of Cards in the context of Italy. The second chapter involves a comparative analysis of climates between Singapore and Italy, considering aspects such as sun, wind, and rain. The final chapter introduces a modified design that preserves the original structure and style while adapting seamlessly to tropical weather conditions. The project showcases analytical capabilities, critical thinking, and proficiency in software, particularly the use of ClimateStudio for justifying design effectiveness and meticulous attention to detail.

本次欧洲住宅的热带化改造项目,是“气候、生态与建筑”专项研究课程中的任务之一。该项目侧重于以气 象数据分析为导向的被动式设计,即顺应自然界的阳光、风力、气温、湿度等自然原理,尽量不依赖常规 能源的消耗,以实现最佳的热舒适度,并在最大幅度上降低额外的供暖、空调、照明等需求。由于篇幅限 制,本作品集摘录了此次研究项目的部分汇报内容。完整报告共分为三个章节:第一章重点研究了原设计在 意大利人文与气候背景下的设计意图和使用效率;第二章从日照情况(时长、强度、路径)、季节性风向风 力变化以及降雨量分布等角度对新加坡和意大利的气候进行了深入而具体的比较分析,结合湿度温度对 照图的分析结果确定改造内容;第三章作为最后一章承接上文、前后呼应,依照光、风、雨的顺序介绍了改 造后的热带化设计,并与原设计进行了各方面的比对,保证其既保留了原本的结构和风格,又能在适应本 地热带气候并发挥优良性能。本次研究课题充分锻炼了辩证与批判性思维、数据分析技能以及新软件的 快速学习与应用能力,培养了对环境设计的敏感度,为后续绿色低碳建筑设计学习奠定了坚实基础。

The theme for my drawings is Beauty in Science and Perfection. The plan is angled at 13 degrees following how the Parthenon building is orientated at an angle to the north point. The angle is special because it was painstakingly found by Greek scientists and mathematics so that on the birthday of goddess Athena, Parthenon would be directly facing the sunrise. The section and elevation are correspondingly extruded from the plan using generating lines with an intent to express the idea that the building was designed in a system proportions that binds all three into one.
