Supported by a $5 million BC Cancer Foundation campaign, a new BC Cancer centre in Kamloops will bring life-saving radiation treatment closer to home for local patients
With a long career as a registered nurse, Brenda Partridge knows firsthand how much it means to patients to receive care close to home, supported by family and friends.
And yet, nothing prepared her for how difficult the trip from Kamloops to Kelowna for daily radiation treatments would be during her own cancer diagnosis.
In September 2024, after decades of caring for others and building a life as a mother and grandmother in Kamloops, Brenda was settling into retirement with her husband, Gord, when she was diagnosed with tongue cancer. Her treatment included three surgeries in Vancouver and 31 radiation sessions and chemotherapy at BC Cancer – Kelowna.
The five-hour round trip between Kamloops and Kelowna was impossible for Brenda to manage while undergoing daily radiation therapy, so she and Gord relocated to Kelowna for the duration of her treatment.
The Cost of Travelling for Cancer Care “Being away from home and the support of our family and friends was one of the hardest parts. Cancer treatment takes so much out of you and having your loved ones close makes all the difference,” says Brenda.
Brenda’s experience is shared by many people in Kamloops and its surrounding communities who currently travel long distances for treatment. Time away from home means disruption to daily routines, added financial strain and emotional and physical fatigue — all while facing one of life’s toughest health challenges.

With a growing and aging population, cancer rates in Kamloops are projected to rise by 33% over the next 20 years — making a new cancer centre in Kamloops critically important, especially as nearly half of all patients require lifesaving radiation therapy.
As the fundraising partner of BC Cancer, the BC Cancer Foundation has launched a $5 million campaign to equip the new Kamloops centre with cutting-edge precision radiation technology.
With construction underway, the new BC Cancer centre is scheduled to open in 2028. In its first year alone, it is expected to support 7,500 radiation consultations and follow-up appointments and provide approximately 16,500 treatments for as many as 1,200 patients.
For patients like Brenda, this means less time on the road and more time with loved ones.
“Knowing this centre is coming to Kamloops gives me a lot of hope,” she says. “I’m grateful for the excellent care I received at BC Cancer – Kelowna but I’m even more grateful that future patients will be able to get that same level of care close to home.”

We spend a lot of time talking about recycling—and for good reason. Many of us carefully rinse containers, flatten cardboard, sort plastics, and keep up with changing recycling rules. Recycling takes effort, attention, and time, and those efforts do make a difference—but recycling is only one part of a much bigger picture.
To truly reduce waste and protect our environment, it helps to understand the waste hierarchy, a framework usually shown as an upside‑down triangle or pyramid, with the most effective actions at the top.
This is about being mindful about how much we consume. Buying fewer items, choosing products with less packaging, and selecting durable goods that last longer all reduce waste at its source. This can even include refusing to accept waste in the first place by declining single‑use items, extra packaging, or promotional items we don’t need. Reducing also saves money, space in our homes, and time spent cleaning, sorting, and eventually discarding items.
Reusing items keeps them in circulation longer, delaying or preventing them from becoming waste. This can include donating items, using refillable containers, repurposing items at home, and repairing instead of replacing. Reusing and repairing honours the energy and materials already invested in making a product. It also supports community sharing and thrift— values many of us grew up with.
Recycling plays an important role in managing waste. It helps conserve resources, reduces the amount sent to landfill, and can save energy compared to making products from raw materials. However, recycling is not a perfect solution. It still requires trucks to collect materials, facilities to sort and process them, and energy to turn old materials into new products. Recycling matters, but it deals with waste after it has already been created.
We can all do our part to be more mindful about waste. It isn’t about doing everything perfectly or feeling guilty about waste. It’s about recognizing that the time and care we already put into recycling can be complemented by simpler choices upstream. By asking, “Do I need this?”, or “Can I use what I already have?”, we make choices that have an even greater impact than sorting one more item into the right bin.

To help keep recyclable and hazardous goods out of our landfills, the ThompsonNicola Regional District has implemented a Mandatory Recyclable Materials Bylaw (#2743). This means that some materials (many of which are free to recycle) are not allowed in landfills across the Region.
1. Less materials in our landfills means longer landfill lifespans. This helps to preserve more of our natural environment, and cuts down on taxpayer costs.
2. Some materials can cause harm to human and environmental health when improperly disposed of.
3. Many of these materials can be easily recycled into new products, reducing the demand for raw natural resources.
Who does this Bylaw apply to?
Commercial, municipal, and residential loads are inspected for Mandatory Recyclable Materials by TNRD Bylaw Officers. Bylaw Officers focus on education and have the authority to issue fines if deemed necessary.
Mandatory Recyclable Materials can be recycled in many locations across the region, including TNRD Eco-Depots, some Transfer Stations, the Household Hazardous Waste Depot (located at 480 Okanagan Way in Kamloops) and private recycling depots.
How are the materials included decided?
Many of the items considered Mandatory Recyclables are covered under Extended Producer Responsibility Programs. Under these programs, consumers pay advanced handling fees when purchasing certain products, which cover costs for take-back programs at solid waste facilities in B.C.
Other items included in this bylaw (cardboard, residential packaging, printed paper, and beverage containers) are easily recyclable and can easily be made into new products when recycled.

The Kamloops Museum and Archives’ permanent display continually evolves to showcase Kamloops’ diverse culture through the voices of its many communities.
Current issues, events, and ideas are explored in our temporary display gallery, presenting relevant and inclusive exhibitions to Kamloops.
The Kamloops Museum and Archives preserves and provides access to historical records of Kamloops residents from 1863 to the recent past. It includes a substantial collection of photographs, books, papers,
maps, and architectural drawings contributed by our community.
Presenting vibrant and engaging school programs linked to the British Columbia curriculum is a priority, while also reflecting our mandate, mission, and vision and utilizing the collection. Our community programs connect with today’s social and political landscape while focusing on local Kamloops and BC histories and cultures. We thank you for sharing in our vision and are proud to serve the Kamloops community.

Karen Willies was born in Vernon in 1944, the only child of Queenie and Alex Cragg. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to Kamloops, where Karen attended school and graduated in 1962. Soon after, she set out to see more of the world, leaving her smalltown life behind for Montreal. It was there, in Quebec, that she found independence and met Gordon Willies, the man who would become her loving partner for life.
In 1973, they returned to British Columbia and settled in Williams Lake. Gordon worked for BC Telephone, while Karen worked as a secretary and bookkeeper at Delaney’s Hardware Store. Surrounded by the natural beauty of the Cariboo, Karen discovered passions that would shape her life, including hiking, cross country skiing, birdwatching, and a deep appreciation for the natural world. Gordon joined Karen in those activities but also pursued his love for athletic activity by taking up long distance running.
In 1982, the couple moved to Kamloops to care for Karen’s mother. Once in Kamloops, their world expanded through friendships and community involvement. Karen became deeply engaged with the Kamloops Naturalist Club, the Ridge Runners, and the Outdoors Club. She embraced every season, skiing and snowshoeing in winter, running and hiking in summer, often alongside her cherished group of friends, among them the Wonderful Wednesday Women.
An avid traveller, Karen explored destinations around the world. She returned home with photographs, stories, and treasured mementos of the people and places she encountered. Though she had no children of her own, she cherished her family. Her extended family remembers her as a gentle soul with a generous heart, forever opening her home to those she loved and even going out of her way to sew tiny outfits for Barbie dolls belonging to the children of cousins and

friends. Karen believed deeply in giving back and volunteered her time on city committees, club executives, and even her strata council.
Gordon shared that same commitment to service. After retirement, Gordon devoted much of his time to volunteering, officiating swim meets and earning Swim BC’s Volunteer of the Year award. One of his most meaningful roles was driving cancer patients from Kamloops to Kelowna for radiation treatments, a quiet act of compassion that reflected his deep sense of responsibility to care for others. In 2014, this role took on special significance when Karen was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Over the years, both Karen and Gordon received care at Royal Inland Hospital (RIH) and understood the vital importance of a strong healthcare system. Upon their passing, Gordon in July 2024, and Karen one year later, chose to leave much of their estate to the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation.
Their extraordinary legacy gift will strengthen healthcare at RIH for generations to come. Legacy giving is a wonderful way to support what matters to you for years to come.

For over 100 years, Royal Inland Hospital (RIH) has grown with our city, providing specialized and advanced care. When you leave a gift in your will to the RIH Foundation, you help ensure the continued success of the hospital and create a legacy of life-saving care for every child, adult and senior in our community and the surrounding areas we serve.

Not all real estate experiences are the same, especially when it comes to navigating a move later in life.
For homeowners aged 50 and over, real estate decisions often carry more weight. These moves are rarely just about buying or selling a property. They involve lifestyle changes, long-term planning, and, in many cases, leaving a home filled with years of memories. That’s where working with a Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES®) can make a meaningful difference.
An SRES® designation is more than a title. It reflects specialized training focused on the unique needs of mature clients, including downsizing, financial considerations, family dynamics, and the emotional side of transitioning homes. While many real estate agents are skilled in the transactional side of buying and selling, an SRES® brings an added layer of understanding, patience, and advocacy to the process.
One of the biggest differences is pace. Not every move needs to happen quickly, and not every decision should. Having the space to ask questions, review options, and move forward with clarity can make the process feel far more manageable. An SRES® approach recognizes that, and supports it.
There’s also a strong focus on clear, honest communication. Rather than overpromising or pushing for timelines that don’t fit, the goal is to provide realistic guidance based on the current market and individual circumstances. This helps avoid wasted time and unnecessary stress, allowing for decisions that are informed and intentional.
Advocacy plays a role as well. Whether it’s helping coordinate next steps, offering resources, or simply ensuring all parties feel heard and understood, having

someone who can guide the process with care makes a meaningful difference. It’s about creating a sense of trust, not pressure.
For many, these moves are tied to important life transitions, simplifying responsibilities, being closer to family, or creating a home that better supports dayto-day living. Having the right support in place can help ensure those decisions feel confident, not overwhelming.
In a market that can sometimes feel fastpaced and overwhelming, having the right guidance matters. For those considering a move, whether it’s downsizing, relocating, or simply exploring options, working with a professional who understands the bigger picture can make all the difference.
At the end of the day, working with Carmen, someone who understands both the practical and personal sides of this stage of life, can make all the difference. Not because the process is rushed or simplified but because she approaches it with the right level of care, clarity, and respect.

Retirement today looks different than it did a generation ago. More older adults are seeking a lifestyle that blends independence with meaningful social connection, a place where they can feel at home while continuing to learn, engage, and enjoy life. Across the Okanagan Regency Retirement Resorts has built its philosophy around exactly that: creating vibrant, resident-centered communities where people can thrive.
What sets Regency communities apart is not one single feature, but a shared culture rooted in warmth, belonging, and respect. Walk into any Regency residence, whether in Kelowna, Vernon, or Penticton, and you’ll notice the same welcoming atmosphere. Residents greet one another by name, staff members take the time to connect, and shared spaces are thoughtfully designed to encourage conversation, activity, and comfort.
At the heart of the Regency approach is the belief that independence and support can coexist. Residents enjoy the freedom to live life on their own terms, with the reassurance that help is available if they need it. For some, that means enjoying fully independent living with access to dining, recreation, and housekeeping. For others, it may mean choosing optional support services that make day-to-day life easier. The emphasis is always on choice.
Active Living teams across Regency play an important role in creating day-to-day vibrancy. Fitness classes, educational workshops, outings, social gatherings, and creative programs are all designed to meet a wide range of interests and abilities. Staff members often describe the best part of their work as witnessing the natural friendships that form among residents and the supportive atmosphere.

Suites and amenities vary by location, but comfort and community remain at the core. Residents might spend an afternoon relaxing in a fireside lounge, joining a book club, tending a community garden, or enjoying a chef-prepared meal with friends. Spaces such as hobby rooms, outdoor patios, libraries, games lounges, woodshops, and quiet reading areas provide opportunities to engage or unwind, at any pace.
Above all, what residents and families appreciate most is the genuine sense of home. That feeling often begins the moment someone walks through the door. Team members aim to make everyone feel welcome and supported, ensuring each individual experiences the warmth and consistency.
Whether someone is seeking a more social lifestyle, hoping to simplify daily responsibilities, or simply looking for a community that aligns with their values, Regency Retirement Resort offers options to suit a variety of preferences and needs. Across every location, the promise remains the same: a warm, engaging environment where residents can continue to live fully, confidently, and with joy.

A “Campus of Care” is a thoughtfully designed (and accredited) seniors community that supports older adults through all stages of their retirement—so you can settle in once and feel at home, even as your needs change. Traditionally, retirement stages are referred to as Independent Living, Assisted Living and Long-Term Care.
Rather than facing another disruptive move when additional support is required, residents can transition within the same familiar environment—from Independent Living to Assisted Living or Long-Term Care— depending on what’s needed and available. One of the greatest advantages is continuity. Familiar routines, friendly faces, and comfortable surroundings help ease life’s transitions, especially after a health change or hospital stay. There’s comfort in knowing that support is already in place, and that care can adapt without leaving the community you know and trust. For families, this brings simplicity and reassurance, with loved ones supported in one coordinated setting.

A Campus of Care also encourages true aging in place, offering flexibility and choice. Residents can enjoy independence while staying connected to a vibrant community, with access to wellness programs, social activities, and safety features that support confidence and quality of life.
Just as important is the sense of belonging. Shared meals, engaging activities, and everyday interactions create meaningful connections and a strong feeling of community—where neighbours become friends. For many older adults and their families, a Campus of Care offers lasting peace of mind—providing comfort, connection, and support not only for today, but for whatever tomorrow may bring.

working together to maintain beautiful flower boxes on the patio, instilling a sense of pride and accomplishment.
New residents are welcomed each summer through monthly Meet & Mingle events, featuring coffee and homemade cookies, helping everyone feel included and part of the community. Additionally, weekly Ice Cream Socials offer a simple yet joyful way for residents and staff to bond and enjoy warm afternoons together. Together, these traditions strengthen relationships, encourage teamwork, and create a welcoming, supportive environment for all.
These moments at The Residence reflect how consistent, shared experiences can shape a sense of belonging, where connection is built through consistency and care, and independence is thoughtfully supported. The result is a community where seniors engage in meaningful moments of celebration, forming connections that enhance their overall well-being.

Luxury in the home is evolving—and for many homeowners, especially those looking to simplify daily routines, comfort is taking center stage. One of the clearest examples of this shift is the growing popularity of motorized window coverings.
Gone are the days of adjusting hard-toreach blinds or managing multiple cords throughout the day. With motorization, window coverings can be operated with the touch of a button—or even programmed to adjust automatically based on the time of day.
Morning light can gently filter in without leaving the comfort of your bed, while evenings can bring instant privacy with minimal effort.
Beyond convenience, motorization also integrates seamlessly with today’s smart home technology. Whether paired with

voice assistants or simple remotes, it offers an intuitive way to enhance both comfort and control in your home.
For homeowners looking to make everyday living a little easier, this small upgrade can have a meaningful impact. Connecting with local experts for a free in-home consultation is a great way to explore options tailored to your space and lifestyle.

Breathwork is an ancient practice and a powerful tool for healing—physically, emotionally, and mentally. It involves conscious control of breathing patterns to influence your state of mind and body. Different breathwork techniques are used in therapeutic settings, spiritual practices, and wellness routines.
Here’s an overview of how it aids healing:
Breathwork helps you release trauma and emotions that are being stored in the body, it helps you let go of negative patterns, and cultivate a sense of inner peace and freedom.
Learning to breathe in a healthier way and bring more oxygen into the system will help you fully oxygenate the body for more energy and vitality to your muscles, brain,
organs and senses. You can experience better sleep, receive more mental clarity, reinforce the immune system, release chronic pain, maintain a healthy body weight and strengthen the respiratory system.
Breathwork aims to release tension that is often caused by repressed emotions or trauma. Process old, unintegrated emotional energy from early and recent life experiences. Gain the ability to harmoniously deal with difficult situations and develop a healthy relationship with all emotional states to release stress and anxiety.
Breathwork can be deeply transformative, promoting healing at both emotional and physical levels.

Health appointments can feel overwhelming, especially when transportation, note‑taking, or follow‑up tasks become barriers. The good news is that you don’t have to navigate any of it alone—our community offers a wide range of services to support you before, during, and after your visit.
A bit of preparation can make your appointment more effective. Writing down key details—such as your appointment time, medications, symptoms, and questions— helps your care provider understand your needs. It also gives community programs the information they require to support you in a more coordinated way.
If getting to your appointment is difficult, local transportation options like HandyDART, People in Motion, Centre for Seniors Information, and other senior‑focused services can help with rides, mobility assistance, and getting you where you need to go. Many only require a quick phone call to book.
Support continues well after your appointment. Kamloops organizations offer housekeeping help, meal and grocery programs, friendly visits, equipment loans, health navigation, and connections to other services. Sharing your follow‑up plan, new medications, or referrals ensures they can provide the right assistance.
Staying healthy is a team effort—and you don’t have to do it on your own.

For many Canadians, accessing medical care can mean long waits. While the public healthcare system provides essential services, wait times for certain procedures can stretch for months, leaving patients in discomfort or uncertainty. Private surgery options are emerging as a safe and effective alternative, often without the need to leave one’s home Province or even the Country.
Contrary to common assumptions, private surgery does not always require travel across Provinces. Depending on the procedure, patients may access care locally or in another Province where specialized expertise or advanced technologies are available. Physicians providing private surgery are carefully selected based on their expertise, experience, and outcomes. This ensures patients receive the highest standard of care while benefiting from the convenience of remaining within Canada.
One of the greatest advantages of private care is speed. Receiving treatment sooner can reduce stress, alleviate pain, and improve recovery outcomes. From minor procedures to more complex surgeries, private pathways provide options that empower patients to take control of their care. Patients are matched with expert surgeons who have proven track records in their specialties, ensuring safe and effective results.
Navigating private surgery can be daunting. Understanding which procedures are available, clinic requirements, and potential costs is not always straightforward. Access to accurate information and guidance helps patients

make informed decisions, navigate options safely, and feel confident throughout the process. Advanced technologies and innovative surgical techniques often complement public healthcare, enhancing treatment outcomes and overall patient experience.
Private surgery in Canada is ultimately about choice, convenience, and total body health. Patients have access to highly trained doctors, cutting-edge technologies, and supportive care, all without unnecessary delays. As awareness grows, more Canadians are discovering that timely, high-quality medical care is often accessible closer to home than they ever realized.

Whether you’re concerned about yourself or someone you care about, recognizing early warning signs can help lead to a timely diagnosis and support.
Signs may include memory changes affecting daily life, such as forgetting familiar people or not remembering new information. Someone may have difficulty completing everyday tasks like preparing meals or getting dressed. Communication changes are also common, including forgetting words or using words that don’t fit the conversation.
Disorientation in time and place may occur, including losing track of dates or getting lost in familiar places. Judgment may be affected, for example, dressing inappropriately for the weather or placing items in unusual locations. People may also struggle with abstract thinking, such as managing finances or understanding numbers.

You might notice changes in mood, personality and behaviour, including severe mood changes, withdrawal or suspicion. A loss of initiative is also common, losing interest in social activities and a need for prompting. Changes in sight or motion, like difficulty seeing objects or placing items, may also occur.
Speak to your doctor for assessment and support. Visit alzheimerbcyukon.org for more dementia resources.

Across Kamloops and the ThompsonOkanagan, a quiet determination is taking root. More older adults are choosing to remain exactly where they feel most grounded: in the homes they built and the communities they love. For many, home is far more than a structure; it is an archive of identity, memory, and autonomy.
However, we often view independence through a fractured lens. We assume it means doing everything alone, bearing every burden in solitude. True independence is quite the opposite. It is not about isolation; it is about curating the right environment and securing the right support to live safely, confidently, and on your own terms. Beyond the physical danger, there is a mental toll. Living in a home that requires constant vigilance is exhausting. It turns a haven into a source of low-grade anxiety.
As the Founder of Humble Home Care and Yellow Glove Cleaning, I witness daily how subtle environmental barriers can quietly erode this freedom. Poor lighting, high shelves, or deferred maintenance can transform a sanctuary into an obstacle course. Over time, these small frictions sap confidence and introduce unnecessary risk.
What many families fail to realize is that independence is a muscle that can be strengthened. We need not wait for a crisis to act. By making proactive adjustments such as installing strategic handrails, reorganizing high-traffic areas, or clearing walkways, we do more than reduce the risk of falls; we conserve vital energy.
Think of these adjustments as “joy preservation.” When you are not expending energy navigating a difficult environment, you have more vitality left for what you love, whether that is gardening, entertaining, or simply relaxing. These changes liberate older adults to spend their time on meaningful pursuits rather than navigating preventable hurdles.

Equally critical is a shift in our dialogue. Families often hesitate to suggest help, fearing it signals a decline. Too often, we treat these conversations as a last resort, waiting for a stumble or a scare to force the issue. This makes the topic feel like a surrender. In reality, the right support protects independence. It acts as a scaffold, allowing individuals to remain the architects of their own lives.
To bridge this gap, I now offer complimentary 15-minute Safety Awareness Conversations for families and neighbors. These are educational dialogues designed to provide guidance without pressure. My goal is to help you understand how your home environment influences your long-term well-being.
My philosophy is rooted in prevention, dignity, and respect. Aging is not a condition to be managed; it is a life stage to be supported.
When we stop viewing the home as merely a place to live and start seeing it as an active partner in our health, the paradigm shifts. Independence deepens. Confidence returns. Families breathe easier. Most importantly, you continue to live where you belong: at home.

As we get older, many people notice changes in their feet. Shoes that once felt comfortable may begin to cause discomfort, and issues such as plantar fasciitis, arch pain, heel pain, and general foot fatigue can become more noticeable. The good news is that the right footwear can make a significant difference.
Supportive running and walking shoes are designed to provide proper cushioning, stability, and alignment. When feet are well supported, there is less stress on the muscles, tendons, and ligaments that work hard every day. This can help prevent or relieve pain related to plantar fasciitis, flat feet, high arches, or normal wear and tear that comes with age.
Properly fitted shoe insoles can add even more support. Insoles help distribute pressure more evenly, improve alignment,

and provide cushioning where it is needed most. This can reduce strain on the heel and arch while also supporting the ankles, knees, and lower back.
Getting the right fit matters. Footwear and insoles matched to your foot shape and lifestyle help keep you comfortable, active, and moving with confidence.

Do I need a referral?
No, you do not need a referral. Denturists are denture specialists and work very closely with your dentist or dental specialist to provide you with personalized and custom dental work that fits everyone’s needs. All our work is done on the premise, ensuring quality control and care. Our services include complete and partial dentures, immediate dentures, dentures over implants, partials over implants, relines, rebases, and repairs.
What are the indications for having dentures checked?
Your body is constantly changing, including your mouth, however, your denture does not change. Here are some indications that your dentures should be checked:
1. Dentures that fall out when speaking, eating or laughing
2. Sore spots that go away and come back again
3. Problems with eating
4. Changes in facial features including wrinkles
5. Dentures that are rarely worn
What are immediate dentures?
Immediate dentures are placed directly after your natural teeth have been extracted. They require extra care and adjustment; however, they allow the patient to not have to go without teeth. Visit your denturist for a consultation to formulate a treatment plan that suits your needs.
What is a reline/rebase?
Reline or rebase is required when bone and tissue have changed due to shrinkage. A reline/rebase adds material to your denture to make up for this difference.
Regular checkups protect your comfort, fit, and long term oral health.

Can my denture be repaired if it is broken?
Yes, in most cases a repair is possible if the denture is in relatively good condition. Your denturist will be able to assist with same day repairs for your convenience.
How long are dentures supposed to last?
Many people believe that dentures last forever. However, dentures should be checked on an annual basis. Wearing an ill-fitting denture without having them regularly checked, can cause damage to your mouth that may require surgery an ill-fitting denture without having them Immediate dentures are placed directly after your natural teeth have been extracted. They require extra care and adjustment; however, they allow the patient to not have to go without teeth. A regular visit with your denturist allows for problems to be prevented and your dentures to be professionally cleaned.

When it comes to foot and lower limb health, it is helpful to understand the difference between pedorthists, podiatrists, and pedicurists. Each plays a distinct role in foot care. A podiatrist is a licensed medical doctor specializing in diagnosing, treating, and preventing foot and ankle conditions. Services may include managing infections, prescribing medications, performing minor surgery, treating complex biomechanical issues, and providing custom foot orthotics.
A pedorthist focuses on assessing gait and designing custom orthotics or footwear modifications to improve comfort and function. They do not diagnose medical conditions. A pedicurist provides cosmetic and basic foot care such as nail trimming, callus reduction, and skin

maintenance. While valuable for routine upkeep, pedicurists do not treat medical problems. Understanding these differences helps patients choose the right professional for their specific foot health needs. For concerns involving pain, injury, diabetes related foot changes, or persistent nail problems, seeking care from a qualified podiatrist ensures a thorough medical assessment and appropriate treatment plan tailored to long term foot health and safe daily mobility. Regular checkups can prevent small issues from becoming serious foot health concerns over time.

Hearing plays a quiet but important role in how we experience everyday life. For many people, changes in hearing happen gradually. Conversations may take more effort, background noise can feel overwhelming, and it can become harder to follow along in group settings. The good news is that today’s hearing technology is designed to support these real-life situations in a more personalized and effective way.
One example is Oticon Zeal, a newer generation of hearing technology designed to deliver clear, reliable sound in a discreet size. It uses advanced technology to help prioritize speech over background noise, making conversations easier to follow, even in busy environments. By combining performance with a discreet design, it removes the
need to compromise between how a hearing aid looks and how it performs.
What makes modern hearing solutions especially meaningful is how adaptable they are. Today’s technology, including solutions like Oticon Zeal, can be tailored to individual lifestyles, whether that means enjoying time with family, participating in community activities, or feeling more at ease in everyday conversations.
Speaking with a hearing care professional can help you better understand your hearing and what solutions may be right for you. Many clinics, including HearingLife, offer free hearing tests as a way to get started.

Shopping local is more than a trend, it’s a meaningful way to support the longterm well-being of our communities. When you choose to spend your money at locally owned businesses, more of those dollars stay close to home. They help sustain local jobs, support nearby suppliers, and contribute to services that benefit everyone. Over time, this creates a stronger, more resilient local economy. There’s also something special about the character that local businesses bring to a community. Independent shops, cafés, and markets often reflect the personality and values of the people who live there. They offer a more personal touch—familiar faces, thoughtful service, and products chosen with care. These experiences can turn everyday errands into opportunities for connection and conversation.
Local businesses are also deeply invested in their communities. Many support local events, contribute to charities, and adapt their offerings based on the needs of their customers. Their success is closely tied to the well-being of the people they serve, which creates a shared sense of pride and connection.
For those who have seen communities grow and change over the years, shopping local is a simple yet powerful way to preserve what makes a place feel like home. It helps maintain the vibrancy of neighbourhoods, encourages small business ownership, and ensures that future generations can enjoy the same sense of community. Choosing local isn’t just about where you shop, it’s about the kind of community you want to live in.

In our recent tours across Kamloops, we’ve witnessed something remarkable. When seniors step into ownership-based communities, the first thing they notice isn't the floorplan – it's a familiar face. We’ve seen old neighbours from Sahali or former coworkers from the North Shore reconnecting in the dining room.
Research consistently shows that social interaction is the single greatest contributor to longevity and mental health. Transitioning to a 55+ community isn't a retreat; it’s a strategy to reclaim your social life. Imagine a lifestyle where the "chore" of cooking is replaced by a shared meal with friends, and the "stress" of home repairs is replaced by a movie in a theater just down the hall.
A common misconception is that "moving to a facility" means "renting a room." In Kamloops, the model has evolved. The "ownership model" allows seniors to purchase their condos, maintaining their status as homeowners and preserving their equity. It’s a middle ground that provides the autonomy of a full kitchen and large living space with the luxury of hospitality-style amenities. Financially,
this is often significantly more accessible than traditional assisted living, allowing the "Generational Wealth" seniors have worked so hard for to remain intact.
The greatest hurdle is rarely the destination – it’s the logistics of the journey. The fear of sorting through decades of belongings or the physical toll of moving can be paralyzing. That is why the "concierge" approach is vital. Having a patient partner to navigate the paperwork, coordinate the movers, and even provide a comfortable van for property tours with adult children can turn a stressful event into an exciting milestone.
Moving is a major life decision that requires both professional expertise and emotional grace. When the burden of a large property is lifted, seniors often find they don’t just have a new home; they have a new lease on life. After all, "tomorrow" shouldn’t be a routine of chores. It should be something you look forward to.

The Kamloops Blazers are one of the most successful franchises in the Western Hockey League (WHL), based in Kamloops, British Columbia. Founded in 1966 as the Estevan Bruins before relocating, the Blazers rose to prominence in the late 1980s and early 1990s. During that era, they captured three Memorial Cup titles (1992, 1994, 1995), led by future NHL stars like Jarome Iginla and Shane Doan. The team has remained a consistent contender, known for strong player development and passionate fan support.
A recent standout in Blazers history is Logan Stankoven. Born in 2003, Stankoven became one of the WHL’s most dynamic forwards during his time
in Kamloops. Despite being undersized, his speed, scoring ability, and relentless work ethic made him a star. He led the league in scoring in 2021–22 and played a key role in the Blazers’ run to the 2023 Memorial Cup as tournament hosts. Drafted by the Dallas Stars, Stankoven represents the next generation of elite talent developed by the Blazers organization.

When Kohanna first arrived at the Kelowna BC SPCA, she wore a bright blue collar — the only clue to a past life that had vanished. Trembling with fear with her tail tucked tight, she searched every face for the people she had lost. Whether she had been purposefully abandoned or wandered too far, no one ever came forward to claim her, an alltoo-common story.
Thanks to compassionate Forever Guardians – these are animal lovers who chose to leave a gift in their will or estate to protect and care for vulnerable animals - Kohanna received the care, patience, and love she needed to heal. Slowly, her fear gave way to trust. The gentle hands of BC SPCA staff that once seemed so unfamiliar became a source of comfort, and each quiet moment reminded her she was finally safe.
“Kohanna’s transformation is what keeps us going,” says Shannon Paille, Kelowna Community Animal Centre Manager. When a dog like her comes in scared and shut down, and then blossoms into a happy, trusting companion, that’s the power of Forever Guardians’ love in action.”
Before long, Kohanna’s tail wags grew more confident, her playful energy returned, and she rediscovered the simple joy of being loved. When she finally met her new family, she approached them shyly, then melted into their embrace, as if she knew she was home.
Kohanna’s story is a testament to the kindness of Forever Guardians who believe every animal deserves safety, respect, and love. To learn more, visit foreverguardian. ca or contact Clayton at foreverguardians@ spca.bc.ca or 1-855-622-7722.

Grief is a natural part of life - one that most of us will experience more than once. While it is a shared experience, it can still feel deeply isolating. The death of a spouse, friend, or loved one can change our lives in profound ways, leaving us searching for understanding, connection, and support.
Sharing your grief with someone who truly understands can be a powerful step toward healing. At Kamloops Hospice Association, we believe that no one should have to navigate grief alone.
While hospice is often associated with endof-life, our commitment to the community extends far beyond that moment. For many, grief marks the beginning of a challenging journey of healing and adjustment.
There is no right way to grieve and no set timeline for healing. What matters most
is having a safe, compassionate space where you can be heard, understood, and supported.
Our grief support programs are here to ensure that everyone in our community has somewhere to turn. You do not need to have had a loved one in hospice to access these services - anyone grieving the recent death of a loved one is welcome.
We offer one-on-one support, group programs, and community education. Our trained grief and children’s counsellors along with dedicated volunteers create spaces where compassion leads and no one walks alone – in life, loss, and healing.
In times of grief, connection matters. At Kamloops Hospice Association, you’ll find support, understanding, and space to heal. Reach us by calling 250-372-1336 or visit www.kamloopshospice.com

Do you have 2 hours a week during school hours to read one-on-one with young students? No experience is necessary, but you must have good English language skills. We provide free training and ongoing support.
Come Read with Me gives students the opportunity to practice their reading skills with a caring, patient adult.
This one-on-one time increases their self-confidence, improves their reading fluency and comprehension and builds their independence.
Tutors read with 3 students for 30 minutes each at a local elementary school once a week, either morning or afternoon, for 12 weeks. You will develop relationships with fellow tutors and with your students as you help them grow as readers. What a rewarding volunteer experience!

To register for a Training Session (held in September and January) or for more information, contact Cami at cami.literacyinkamloops@gmail.com or 250.573.1785

When we talk about violence against senior women, we often think of abuse by family members or caregivers. Rarely do we consider women in their sixties and beyond experiencing harm from their own husbands or partners. Yet intimate partner violence (IPV) among seniors occurs more often than many realize, and much of it goes unreported. IPV can include name-calling, verbal threats, gaslighting, isolation, and sexual or physical assault.
For many older women, leaving a longterm relationship can feel impossible. After decades together, finances, housing, health needs, and social connections are often deeply intertwined. There may also be a generational belief that relationship issues should remain private. These factors can make abuse later in life difficult to recognize and even harder to talk about.

You don’t have to leave your home to get support. You can call to ask questions, talk through your situation, or explore options at your own pace. There is no pressure or judgment. Emergency shelters do not always mean leaving permanently—some women seek information or create a safety plan, while others need temporary refuge during a crisis. Every situation is unique, and services are designed to respect your choices. You remain in control of what happens next.
Everyone deserves to feel safe, respected, and valued in their relationships—no matter their age. Support is here when you are ready.

The War Amps has started mailing 2026 key tags across the country, marking 80 years of providing this service to residents. When you use a War Amps key tag, you protect your keys and support amputees.
Seven-year-old Kenzie Stronks was born without her left arm below the elbow and was enrolled in The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program shortly after she was born. In the letter accompanying the key tags, her parents, Shannon and Josh, describe how The War Amps has supported their family. As a Champ, Kenzie receives financial assistance for artificial limbs, peer connections through CHAMP events and so much more.
“When she walks into a room, her amputation often makes her different from everybody else, so being able to meet kids just like her at CHAMP seminars is very special,” say Shannon and
Josh. “Thanks to The War Amps, Kenzie has the artificial limbs and devices she needs for the hobbies she loves. She has a bike device that attaches to her artificial arm and allows her to keep a safe grip on the handlebar while riding. She also has a tumbler device that fits onto her artificial arm to help with balance and floor exercises during karate.”
The Key Tag Service is a free key return service for Canadians that generates funds for The War Amps many programs, including CHAMP. Since amputee veterans started the service in 1946, it continues to employ amputees and people with disabilities and has returned more than 1.5 million sets of lost keys to their owners.
The War Amps receives no government grants; its programs are made possible through the public’s support of the Key Tag Service. For more information, or to order key tags, visit waramps.ca or call 1 800 250-3030

Kamloops is full of
Making the decision to move is rarely easy.
In some cases, it means leaving the home that you raised your family in, which makes it even harder.
Instead of maintaining a house that has grown too large, imagine a home where the property is cared for and the only thing on your “to-do” list is enjoying your morning coffee.
Maybe you want to use this time to travel. Not necessarily to exotic destinations, but simply to visit the family and friends who live across the country, without a single worry about the safety or upkeep of your house while you’re gone.
Maybe you’ve noticed that you spend a little too much time on the iPad (we know we do!), and you’d rather get back to reconnecting with old friends and making new ones in a community that feels inviting and stress-free.
Perhaps you’ve realized that while you could stay where you are for another period of time, maybe spending those years with energy and minimal responsibility seems inviting.
If this resonates with you personally, or if it makes you think of your parents, let’s have a conversation.
No pressure, just a conversation.
We get one life to live – let’s maximize it!
If the process seems daunting because you don’t know where to start, we have those answers. We’ve helped many families navigate this transition in the past, and we look forward to helping many more in the future.
Real estate is what we do, and we truly enjoy it.
If we talk and nothing more than a few good thoughts come of it? Excellent
If there is something we can do to assist? Fantastic Cheers, David Lawrence & Lisa Moonie
