Why are E-Bikes so popular?

Whether on the roads, trails, or in your neighbourhood, you’ve likely noticed: e-bikes seem to be everywhere! But why? E-bikes are popular because they make cycling more accessible, fun, and practical for a wider range of people and varied types of riding. They lower physical barriers like hills and distance, offer health benefits with less exertion, and are a cost-effective and ecofriendly alternative to cars for commuting and recreation. Advances in technology and design have made them a versatile and desirable mode of transportation and leisure.

Accessibility and practicality

• Makes hills and distance easier: In the Okanagan it’s almost impossible to avoid the hills. An electric motor provides assistance, allowing riders to travel further and tackle climbs, headwinds and longer distances with significantly less physical effort. E-bikes have several assist levels so you can choose the level of support that works for you.

• Reduces sweat and exertion: With a pedal assist e-bike, it’s possible to arrive at a destination without being overly sweaty or over-exerting yourself, making them a practical choice for commuting to appointments, work, or meeting up with friends.

• Increases versatility: E-bikes are designed and engineered for a wide variety of purposes, from road, gravel, and pathway riding to off-road mountain biking, recreational trail use – even riding in snow!

• Easier for diverse users: They are especially popular with older adults, those with fitness or mobility considerations, or people with physical challenges.

Health and environmental benefits

• Low-impact exercise: E-bikes provide a way to get outdoor exercise that is less strenuous and more enjoyable, improving cardiovascular health and building leg strength while enjoying fresh air and sunshine!

• Environmentally friendly: They produce significantly fewer greenhouse gas emissions than cars, making them a sustainable choice for transportation.

• Reduces reliance on cars: E-bikes offer a viable alternative for many mid-distance trips, helping to reduce traffic congestion and the demand for parking. With an e-bike, you no longer must put the bike on the back of your car and drive to a more accessible riding area – now you can ride there and back!

Cost savings

• Lower operating costs: E-bikes are an economical alternative to cars: they don’t require gasoline or insurance to operate, and maintenance costs are significantly lower.

Technological and design improvements

• Improved technology: Advancements in battery, motor, and electronic control systems have made e-bikes lighter, more reliable and more efficient. Middrive e-bikes, which have the motor built into the frame of the bike, provide instant assist, delivering consistent, predictable power and confidenceinspiring handling, without the need for a throttle. Battery ranges can often exceed 100 kms on a single charge, and most modern e-bike batteries can be charged on or off the bicycle.

Time to go to your local bike shop! No matter your lifestyle or fitness level, there is an e-bike to suit you. Now it’s time to go to your local bike shops to learn more about which models have the features best suited for your riding - and then take them for test rides. This will help you determine which bike fits and feels best. And make sure you’re ready… ready to fall in love with an e-bike!

Custom Foot Orthotics WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Orthotics can be used to treat conditions in the feet such as bunions, plantar fasciitis, metatarsalgia, as well as the effects of diseases such as diabetes or arthritis. They are also often used in helping conditions of the knee, hip and back. The most important aspect when considering treatment with custom orthotics is the examination process; it helps determine if a foot orthotic is an appropriate treatment choice for your condition. Canadian Certified Pedorthists are custom-made foot orthotic and orthopaedic footwear experts. They are one of the few healthcare professionals trained in the assessment of lower limb anatomy and muscle and joint function. With specialized education and training in custom-made orthotics and footwear, Canadian Certified Pedorthists help to alleviate pain, abnormalities, and debilitating conditions of the lower limbs and feet.

Foot orthotics are medical devices made to address pain, numbness and alignment in the body. Pain can occur for many reasons; a biomechanical/physiological problem, excessive weightbearing at work or overuse in sports as well as trauma or post surgical recovery. Canadian Certified Pedorthists help to alleviate pain, abnormalities, and debilitating conditions of the lower limbs and feet.

specific and unique requirements, a gait (walking or running) analysis of the patient, as well as a hands-on biomechanical assessment of the feet and lower limb should be done. If it has been determined a custom foot orthotic is needed a pedorthist takes a three-dimensional casting of the patient’s foot and an orthotic is made from raw materials.

Once your orthotics are made they should be fitted to your footwear in person. This is an important step as all shoes are different shapes and sizes and may need some adjustments. If an orthotic does not fit into your shoes properly they could cause increased pain or discomfort.

Unlike overthe-counter solutions custom made orthotics are made specifically for the patient. In order to evaluate a patient’s

There will be a break-in period that should be followed with guidelines provided at your fitting. Everyone responds differently to an orthotic and adjustments may or may not be needed. It is important to know it is normal to have adjustments at times; we all have different sensitivities and respond to changes at different speeds.

If you are experiencing pain your first step is to see your family physician for proper diagnosis and screening. They may refer you to a Canadian Certified Pedorthist to have further assessment on your foot mechanics and alignment that may be the underling cause of your condition.

The Joy of Community Living

Choosing where and how to live as we age is one of life’s most important decisions. For many older adults, moving into an independent senior living community brings not only comfort and convenience but also a renewed sense of purpose, belonging, and independence.

Independent senior communities are designed for active adults who want to enjoy life without the everyday burdens of home maintenance, yard work, or repairs. Imagine waking up in a bright, modern suite where everything you need is within easy reach, from fitness classes and dining options to walking paths and friendly faces right outside your door. These communities are built around freedom and choice, allowing residents to focus on what matters most: connection, health, and happiness.

One of the greatest benefits of community living is social connection. Loneliness and isolation can be real challenges as we grow older, but in an independent living setting, there are endless opportunities to meet new people, share experiences, and build lasting friendships. Whether through coffee mornings, group outings, or hobby clubs, there is always something happening to bring people together.

Safety and peace of mind are also key advantages. Communities offer secure buildings, emergency response systems, and on-site staff who are available if help is ever needed. This sense of security allows residents and their families to relax, knowing support is close by if required.

Health and wellness are naturally woven into daily life. Communities provide access to fitness programs, nutritious dining, and recreational activities that

encourage physical movement and mental engagement. From yoga classes to art workshops, these activities help keep the mind sharp and the body active.

Perhaps most importantly, independent senior living brings freedom from chores, freedom from worry, and freedom to truly live life to the fullest. Residents can travel, volunteer, explore new hobbies, or simply enjoy the tranquility of their surroundings, knowing that everything is taken care of at home.

Independent living communities are not about giving up independence. They are about enhancing it. They offer a supportive, social, and enriching lifestyle designed to make the golden years truly golden. For many, it is not just a new place to live; it is a new way to thrive.

Experience more freedom, friendship, and fulfillment. Discover the benefits of independent senior living today.

Private Surgery Options in Canada Are Expanding

For many Canadians, accessing medical care can mean long waits. While the public healthcare system provides essential services, wait times for certain procedures can stretch for months, leaving patients in discomfort or uncertainty. Private surgery options are emerging as a safe and effective alternative, often without the need to leave one’s home Province or even the Country.

Care Close to Home

Contrary to common assumptions, private surgery does not always require travel across Provinces. Depending on the procedure, patients may access care locally or in another Province where specialized expertise or advanced technologies are available. Physicians providing private surgery are carefully selected based on their expertise, experience, and outcomes. This ensures patients receive the highest standard of care while benefiting from the convenience of remaining within Canada.

Faster Treatment, Better Outcomes

One of the greatest advantages of private care is speed. Receiving treatment sooner can reduce stress, alleviate pain, and improve recovery outcomes. From minor procedures to more complex surgeries, private pathways provide options that empower patients to take control of their care. Patients are matched with expert surgeons who have proven track records in their specialties, ensuring safe and effective results.

Clear Guidance and Support

Navigating private surgery can be daunting. Understanding which procedures are available, clinic requirements, and potential costs is not always straightforward. Access to accurate information and guidance helps patients

make informed decisions, navigate options safely, and feel confident throughout the process. Advanced technologies and innovative surgical techniques often complement public healthcare, enhancing treatment outcomes and overall patient experience.

Prioritizing Total Body Health

Private surgery in Canada is ultimately about choice, convenience, and total body health. Patients have access to highly trained doctors, cutting-edge technologies, and supportive care, all without unnecessary delays. As awareness grows, more Canadians are discovering that timely, high-quality medical care is often accessible closer to home than they ever realized.

Care Begins with Connection

When people ask why I work in healthcare, one moment always comes to mind. A day when everything I thought I knew about dementia, caregiving, and myself was put to the test.

We were dispatched to transfer a gentleman from a retirement residence in Vernon to a long-term care facility. The report was routine: dementia and poor mobility. But nothing prepared me for what happened.

As soon as we arrived, staff warned us: “He’s very aggressive. He’ll swing at you. He doesn’t listen.” Five nurses gathered in his room, tension thick in the air. Their concern wasn’t exaggerated. The moment they entered, he panicked—shouting he was being kidnapped, begging someone to call the police. The more they tried to help, the more terrified he became. After thirty minutes, the nurses stepped back, unsure how to proceed.

I’d worked with many dementia patients before, but never in such a charged situation. Still, I’ve always had a soft spot for dementia care. Some find this illness difficult or unpredictable. But I see something else: the challenge, the need for patience, and the chance to connect beyond words. People have said I have “a way” with people suffering from dementia. That day, I decided to trust that.

I asked to go in alone. The nurses hesitated, but sometimes a new face makes all the difference. I entered slowly, gently, introducing myself—not with force or authority, but with curiosity. His wife sat outside, worry etched across her face. I could see her pacing, hands over her mouth, helpless.

He didn’t want to talk. He wouldn’t let me sit near him. So, I tried humor—small jokes, nothing fancy. Eventually, a flicker of amusement crossed his face. We talked, not about the transfer, but about life, memories, anything that came up.

After nearly an hour, he said the words that stopped me: “I’m just scared. I don’t know where I’m going. I don’t know where I am. I don’t know who these people are.”

That was it. Not aggression. Just fear.

We’d all been focused on the task— moving him, completing the transfer. But no one had asked why he was resisting. That simple question changed everything.

With time, patience, two open ears, and the comfort of a stuffed animal he loved, he calmed. He let me sit beside him. Eventually, he trusted me enough to help him onto the stretcher. He even let me hold his stuffed animal—a gesture that spoke volumes.

That day taught me something I carry with me: dementia may cloud memory, but it doesn’t erase humanity. People still feel fear, love, joy, and the need for connection. They deserve dignity and compassion—not just care, but understanding.

Caregiving isn’t about rushing to the outcome. It’s about slowing down to see the person in front of you. It’s about asking “why” instead of assuming. That man in Vernon reminded me why I do this work. Sometimes, the most important thing we can do is simply take the time to ask … and listen.

Independent.

The Keys to Positive Aging

Embracing Growth, Fulfillment, and Financial Health as We Age

What’s the recipe for a fulfilling life?

According to a recent study commissioned by HomeEquity Bank, provider of the CHIP Reverse Mortgage, just ask a Canadian homeowner aged 75 and older—Canada’s happiest demographic!

This group is experiencing unparalleled levels of happiness. In fact, 95% of Canadians 75+ are very satisfied with their lives, contrasting sharply with 79% of Canadians in their 50s. What’s their secret?

Financial stability, quality connections, and a sense of purpose. These three essential happiness factors, dubbed the “Golden Triangle of Happiness”, were developed by Deakins University in Australia and used by HomeEquity Bank in the study.

Financial Stability Financial stability is at the foundation of the triangle. From your 50s to your 70s, Canadians are transitioning from peak earning years, where costs like children’s education and mortgage

payments loom large, to a period of relative financial ease. As a result, the survey revealed 20% more people in their 70s feel financially secure compared to those in their 50s.

Purpose A sense of purpose doesn’t wane with age; it flourishes. Canadians aged 75 and older are more active in their communities, with a 17% increase in community involvement compared to those in their 50s. This engagement is crucial for maintaining mental and emotional well-being.

Connections The survey reveals that as people age, their quality of connections improves. Many in their golden years report deeper, more fulfilling relationships with family, friends, and their community. All of which are crucial factors in preventing isolation and loneliness.

Ultimately, as Canadians age, their aspirations shift from wealth accumulation to personal fulfillment, family support, and financial security; and these factors translate into a desire for freedom to live life on their terms.

Homeownership plays a pivotal role in achieving freedom, offering both security and opportunity, whether by accessing home equity for personal fulfillment, creating a legacy for the next generation, or offering peace of mind around aging in place.

At HomeEquity Bank, we believe that everyone deserves to age with independence, dignity, and empowerment in the homes they love. Call us at 1-855-460-7266 to learn more about how you can access the savings in your home to live a secure and fulfilling life.

Try Stick Curling!

A Fresh, Accessible Take on a Classic Winter Sport

If you’ve ever been curious about curling but felt unsure about the traditional slide, or if you’re a longtime curler looking for a more comfortable way to stay in the game, stick curling may be exactly what you’ve been waiting for. The delivery stick, a simple yet clever piece of equipment, has opened the sport to players of all ages, abilities, and experience levels. Today, it’s widely accepted in most formats of the game, from club leagues to recreational bonspiels and even competitive stickcurling events. Only competitions that lead to a Curling Canada national championship restrict its use.

A Delivery Method for Everyone

The stick delivery was originally designed for players who faced challenges with the classic sliding technique. Maybe an injury made kneeling painful, or perhaps reduced flexibility made balance unpredictable. But while comfort and safety remain major reasons curlers reach for the stick, the idea that it’s “only for seniors” is pure myth.

Players of all ages choose the delivery stick for its stability, simplicity, and surprisingly natural feel. It has also become an essential tool in wheelchair curling, providing athletes with consistent, controlled releases. At the same time, it’s a terrific entry point for newcomers who want to try the sport without the intimidation of slipping and sliding on the ice. In short: if you want to use a stick, you can.

Health and Mental-Wellness Benefits

Beyond accessibility, stick curling delivers an impressive range of health perks. Physically, it keeps players moving,

walking the length of the sheet, sweeping, and delivering stones all contribute to steady, low-impact exercise. It’s gentle on joints yet effective for building balance, coordination, and functional strength. For many players returning from injury, the delivery stick allows continued participation without strain, helping maintain long-term mobility and confidence on the ice.

The mental-health benefits are just as rewarding. Curling is inherently social, and stick curling keeps more people connected to their clubs and communities. Regular play can reduce stress, spark motivation during the winter months, and provide a meaningful sense of belonging. The strategy and teamwork built into every end also give the brain a workout, boosting focus and keeping minds sharp. For anyone seeking an activity that blends movement, camaraderie, and fun, stick curling hits every mark.

Give It a Try

Whether you’re seeking comfort, confidence, fitness, or community, stick curling offers a welcoming path onto the ice. Head to Kelowna Curling Club and give it a shot, you may discover your favourite new sport.

Fresh Air for a Healthier Home

Inviting fresh air into your home is one of the easiest ways to boost health and well-being. Indoor air can often be more polluted than outdoor air, filled with dust, allergens, and other irritants. Opening your doors and windows allows natural ventilation, helping clear out stale air, reduce humidity, and lower the buildup of pollutants like mold spores and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Breathing cleaner air supports respiratory health, increases oxygen levels, and can even enhance mental clarity and focus. Fresh air helps the body release stress hormones and increases serotonin, the “feel-good” chemical that promotes calm and happiness. A well-ventilated home can also improve sleep and energy levels throughout the day.

However, with open doors come unwelcome intruders, mosquitoes, flies, and outdoor debris. That’s why having a high-quality screen on your doors is so important. A durable, professionally fitted screen allows air to flow freely while keeping insects and debris outside where they belong.

Beyond comfort, this simple addition supports an eco-friendly lifestyle. By letting in cool, natural air, you can reduce reliance on air conditioning, lower energy bills, and lessen your home’s environmental footprint.

With the right screen, you can enjoy all the health benefits of fresh air, comfortably, safely, and naturally, every day.

Healing within using Breathwork

Breathwork is an ancient practice and a powerful tool for healing—physically, emotionally, and mentally. It involves conscious control of breathing patterns to influence your state of mind and body. Different breathwork techniques are used in therapeutic settings, spiritual practices, and wellness routines.

Here’s an overview of how it aids healing:

Breathwork helps you release trauma and emotions that are being stored in the body, it helps you let go of negative patterns, and cultivate a sense of inner peace and freedom.

Learning to breathe in a healthier way and bring more oxygen into the system will help you fully oxygenate the body for more energy and vitality to your muscles, brain,

organs and senses. You can experience better sleep, receive more mental clarity, reinforce the immune system, release chronic pain, maintain a healthy body weight and strengthen the respiratory system.

Breathwork aims to release tension that is often caused by repressed emotions or trauma. Process old, unintegrated emotional energy from early and recent life experiences. Gain the ability to harmoniously deal with difficult situations and develop a healthy relationship with all emotional states to release stress and anxiety.

Breathwork can be deeply transformative, promoting healing at both emotional and physical levels.

Keep your EARS open for this new technology!

Bluetooth® wireless technologies are being upgraded and will be life-changing, not just for hearing aid wearers, but for anyone wanting to hear easier in theatres, pubs, airports, movies, and more.

Bluetooth® Low Energy audio is the next generation of Bluetooth® audio which is faster, offers better sound quality, and uses less battery power compared to previous generations.

AuracastTM broadcast audio is a groundbreaking feature of Bluetooth® Low Energy Audio that allows a single device (e.g. a Smartphone or transmitter) to broadcast audio to an unlimited number of compatible nearby devices: headphones, earbuds, and, yes, certain hearing aids. How does it work? An AuracastTM transmitter broadcasts to one or many compatible Bluetooth enabled devices.

A listener can select from a list on their Smartphone which broadcast to receive and start listening immediately. Gate 4 announcements at the airport. A muted TV at the pub. Breathing Room for Caregivers

Kathy feels pulled in every direction Between work, household responsibilities, and supporting her children, she now finds herself caring for her aging parents. The little time she once had for herself has disappeared. Her situation reflects a growing reality for today’s “sandwich generation”: midlife adults balancing the needs of both older and younger family members.

The pressures are real. Constant demands, limited time, and emotional overload can leave caregivers exhausted and isolated. Self-care, hobbies, and even simple moments like coffee with friends often vanish first, leading to stress and burnout. At the same time, many senior parents don’t want to feel like a burden. They value independence and a positive relationship with their families. This is where professional home care can make a meaningful difference.

Skilled caregivers assist with meals, household tasks, transportation, and personal care, helping parents maintain dignity and comfort while easing the family’s load. As the number of older adults living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia continues to rise, this support is more essential than ever.

For caregivers like Kathy, home care creates breathing room. Even small pockets of relief restore time for exercise, social connection, and rest. With extra support for mom and dad, Kathy can focus on what matters most: sharing meaningful moments rather than worrying about day-to-day tasks. Home care helps the sandwich generation thrive, preserving both relationships and well-being.

Restoring Comfort for Aching Backs

Back pain affects people of all ages and can develop from many causes, including daily strain, ongoing stress, herniated discs and nerve compression. These issues can interfere with work, sleep and everyday activities. Laser therapy offers a safe and effective way to reduce pain, calm inflammation and restore comfortable movement.

Laser therapy works by decreasing inflammation in tissues that irritate nerves and in muscles that have become tight or overworked. By supporting healthier tissue function, the therapy helps reduce pressure in the spine and ease discomfort. Some patients also notice improvement in disc related concerns, as laser therapy supports the strength and integrity of the outer layer of spinal discs.

This advanced treatment uses carefully selected laser frequencies to stimulate damaged tissues. As the energy penetrates deep into muscles and spinal structures, it improves circulation, reduces muscle spasm and encourages the body’s natural healing response. These combined effects often lead to steady pain relief and improved mobility.

Laser therapy is gentle, painless and non invasive. It does not damage the skin and has no known side effects. Results are cumulative, and as healing progresses, many people add strengthening exercises to support long term recovery.

Suitable for all ages, laser therapy provides a proven path toward lasting relief from back pain.

Spiral Strength: How Tai Chi Supports Bone, Balance, and Circulation for Seniors

As we age, maintaining strength, balance, and circulation becomes essential for health and independence. Tai Chi offers a gentle, effective way to support these needs through its foundational principle of spiral movement. Spiral actions in Tai Chi involve rotating and coiling motions around the body’s central axis. These movements provide a low-impact form of mechanical stimulation that encourages bone density and strength. Unlike high-impact exercises, Tai Chi’s spirals gently twist and compress bones, signaling the body to maintain and rebuild bone tissue—an important benefit for seniors concerned about osteoporosis.

Tai Chi’s unique footwork is another key to its healing power. Weight shifts from foot to foot aren’t just about balance; they create a natural pumping action that encourages blood and lymph fluid to circulate from the legs back to the heart. This helps reduce swelling, improves oxygen delivery to tissues, and supports overall cardiovascular health. For many seniors who experience circulation challenges, this gentle pumping can be transformative.

About the Author

Balance is often a major concern with aging, as falls pose serious risks. Tai Chi strengthens the muscles and improves neuromuscular coordination needed for stability. Its slow, mindful transitions between poses train the body to maintain control and react quickly to changes in position. This integrated approach builds strength, flexibility, and body awareness—all crucial for preventing falls and promoting confidence in movement.

Tai Chi requires no special equipment and can be practiced standing or seated, making it accessible for seniors of all abilities. It blends breath, focus, and fluid movement into a practice that nurtures both body and mind. This holistic approach not only improves physical health but also fosters a sense of calm and well-being.

For seniors seeking a safe, effective way to build strength, improve circulation, and enhance balance, Tai Chi offers a proven path that meets you where you are and helps you move forward with confidence.

Dr. Michelle Greenwell is a Tai Chi instructor with over 30 years of experience teaching Traditional and Seated Tai Chi forms, Sabre, and Lok Hup. She holds a Master’s and Doctorate in Complementary and Integrative Health focused on BioEnergetic Wellness. Michelle has led Tai Chi programs for seniors across Nova Scotia and Canada, empowering many to enhance their balance, bone strength, and circulation through mindful movement. www.greenwellcenter.com Full resources: linktr.ee/greenwellcenter

FUNGAL NAILS - DON’T IGNORE THEM

Nail fungus, medically known as onychomycosis, affects many people, yet often goes unnoticed. Recognizing the signs early can prevent further complications and help restore the health of your nails

What to Look For…

The first step is to be aware of its symptoms. An infected toenail may show distinct changes:

• Discoloration - One of the most noticeable signs is a change in color. The nail may appear yellow, brown, or even white, and this discoloration can be accompanied by a thickening of the nail.

• Odor - Fungal infections can often emit a foul smell.

• Texture Changes - Texture of the nail may become brittle, crumbly, or distorted. The nail may begin to separate from the nail bed.

• Pain and Discomfort –When wearing shoes or putting pressure on the affected toe. The skin around the nail might become red, swollen, or irritated.

• If you suspect you have toenail fungus, it’s essential to consult with a Doctor or a foot care nurse.

Treatment Options

There are several options, ranging from medications to topical solutions, depending on the severity of the infection. Many are costly; here are some of the options.

• Severe infections, a doctor may prescribe oral antifungal medications. These systemic treatments work from within to

eliminate the fungus and are often more effective than topical treatments however come with potential side effects.

• In recent years, laser treatment has emerged as a viable option. This method involves using a laser to target and kill the fungus without harming the surrounding tissue. While this technology can be promising, it’s expensive and not always effective.

• Antifungal sprays are often quite effective for mild cases. These are applied directly to the nail and surrounding skin. A good example of a product that our clients have found to be effective is Footlogics Nail Tincture - an effective spray, containing the proprietary anti-microbial ingredient Spiraleen®. This product also contains avocado oil and Panthenol to restore toenails to optimum health.

Prevention

Preventing toenail fungus is important. Maintaining good foot hygiene, keeping nails trimmed, and wearing breathable footwear can help reduce the chances of developing this condition. Avoid walking barefoot in communal areas and be cautious when sharing nail clippers or other personal items.

Toenail fungus is a common but treatable condition. If you suspect you have toenail fungus, don’t hesitate to consult a foot care nurse or a doctor.

Support Through Estate Administration

Administering an estate after a death can be emotional and demanding. Executors often step into the role while grieving and may feel unprepared for the responsibility. Their first tasks include identifying the assets of the deceased, determining remaining debts, and ensuring that ongoing obligations such as taxes and property upkeep are handled. Many estates also require an application for a Grant of Probate (or Grant of Administration), a court process that confirms the validity of the will (if applicable) and gives the executor legal authority to move forward.

Even simple estates take time to settle. Financial institutions may request documents, property may need maintenance, and beneficiaries often have questions about timing, distribution, and next steps. Executors must keep organized records, prepare accounts, and manage funds and property in a manner that is fair and transparent. In some situations an appointed executor may prefer not to take on the role and a formal renunciation is needed.

Protecting your Legacy with Trusted Expertise

When someone dies without a will, additional steps are required. A representative must apply for a Grant of Administration, which authorizes the management and distribution of the estate according to provincial law.

Some estates include even more complicated issues. Insolvent estates, where debts exceed assets, require careful attention. Others may involve the transfer of real property or the distribution of specific gifts to charitable or individual beneficiaries. If disagreements arise among family members or beneficiaries, estate litigation may be necessary.

With clear guidance, patience, and steady organization, executors can work through the estate process in a way that honours the wishes of the deceased and supports those who remain.

The Reverse Mortgage - Making the Most of Your Home Equity: A Broker’s Insight

As a mortgage broker with over 20 years of experience and as a certified reverse mortgage specialist, I’ve had the privilege of helping homeowners across BC unlock the value of their homes and create more financial freedom in retirement.

Many people I meet have seen commercials, read articles online, or talked with friends, but still feel unsure about how a reverse mortgage might fit their needs. That’s completely normal. The market has grown quickly, and there are more options than ever before.

Here are a few things to know:

• Growing Market: Reverse mortgages are one of the fastest-growing financial solutions in Canada, giving homeowners more ways to access equity and stay in the homes they love.

• Choice of Lenders: Canadians now have three national reverse mortgage lenders, including two Schedule One Banks. More choice means more flexibility.

• Unique Options: Each lender offers different features, rates, and repayment flexibility.

• Trusted Broker Partners: Independent mortgage brokers work directly with all three of these lenders, so you get the benefit of expert guidance throughout the financing process.

A qualified mortgage broker’s role is to simplify the process; answer your questions and provide guidance you can trust so you feel confident in your decision. Whether you prefer to meet in person, by phone, or over video, a broker should be there to help you explore the possibilities and find the solution that works best for your retirement. Your home is one of your greatest assets.

Young amputee embodies legacy of The War Amps CHAMP Program

The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program is celebrating 50 years of helping young amputees with artificial limbs, peer support and opportunities to thrive.

For Kendra Harper, 28, the program has been part of her life since she was just shy of two years old. Born without her left arm below the elbow, she received funding for limbs designed for everyday use and activities like swimming and dancing. But what she values most are the friendships and lessons from CHAMP seminars.

“From big things like driving to small things like tying a shoe or holding a burger with one hand, we learn from each other,” says Harper, now an elementary school teacher in B.C. “I wouldn’t be half the teacher, leader or person I am today without CHAMP.”

(Then) Harper holds War Amps key tags at a CHAMP Seminar in 2008

This year brought a full-circle moment when she gave the keynote at the 2025 Vancouver CHAMP Seminar, inspiring the next generation.

Founded in 1975 by war amputee veterans, CHAMP continues its legacy of “amputees helping amputees,” made possible through the public’s support of The War Amps Key Tag Service.

(Now) Kendra Harper gives the keynote speech at the 2025 CHAMP Seminar in Vancouver

5 Cool Things About Julian Pellicano

What’s the most unusual place you’ve ever conducted a performance?

I led a performance with musicians on the diving platforms of an olympic swimming pool. I directed the sub-zero performance of a percussion ensemble on the frozen Red River at -38C.

If you hadn’t pursued a career in music, what do you think you’d be doing now?

I’ve wanted to be a performer since I was about 10, but I’ve always been in love with instruments themselves. So if I weren’t playing or conducting instruments, I’d probably be building them. I am a percussionist, so I’d likely be hammering out timpani bowls, forging triangles or restoring vintage xylophones.

Who would play you in a biopic about your life?

I asked some of my oldest friends, and apparently if we could go back in time, Ralph Macchio from the early 80’s would have to play the young me; today they need to get Stanley Tucci on board.

Who is your favourite Canadian artist, outside of classical music?

I grew up on a steady diet of Canadian comedians: John Candy, Mike Meyers, Rick Moranis, and many others, but my favourite is Martin Short — an absolute

genius, able to blend intelligent ideas with a vaudeville sense of slap-stick silliness and perfect timing.

If you could instantly master any skill outside of conducting, what would it be?

Ever since leaving New York at 18 years old, I’ve been trying to make great pizza, mostly out of necessity since I could never find the same quality that I was used to.

The Power of Purpose: Thriving After 50

The Power of Purpose: Thriving After 50

Turning 50 or more isn’t a finish line, it is a fresh start. With decades of experience, wisdom, and resilience behind you, this chapter of life offers a unique opportunity to redefine what fulfillment means. It is a chance to pursue passions, explore new adventures, and deepen connections with yourself and others.

Studies show that having a sense of purpose improves physical health, mental clarity, and longevity. Whether it is volunteering, mentoring, learning a new skill, or strengthening relationships, purposeful living keeps you engaged, energized, and curious. Purpose can take many forms, and it does not have to be grand—it only needs to be meaningful to you.

Start by asking: What brings me joy? What legacy do I want to leave? Then take small steps. Join a local group, take a class, reconnect with old friends, or rent a RV for your next getaway. Let someone else handle the delivery and set up while you simply arrive and enjoy. Spending time in nature brings a sense of calm and freedom, whether you are exploring peaceful lakes, scenic trails, or charming small towns.

Do not underestimate the value of your story. You are not just aging, you are evolving. Each experience adds depth, perspective, and joy to your life. So embrace this season with curiosity and courage, because the best years are not behind you—they are unfolding now.

The Joys of Lake Tours

There’s something uniquely refreshing about being on a lake, surrounded by water and open sky. Lake tours offer a chance to experience nature from a different perspective, whether you’re gliding past quiet coves, spotting wildlife along the shore, or simply enjoying the gentle rhythm of the water.

Modern lake vessels are designed with comfort and accessibility in mind. Stable, spacious boats allow families, friends, and multi-generational groups to relax without worry. Walk-through boarding, shaded seating, and onboard washrooms make it easy for passengers of all ages and abilities to enjoy the experience. For those who prefer a more active outing, many tours offer watersports or swimming opportunities, providing something for everyone.

Safety and enjoyment are enhanced by experienced captains who know the lake intimately. They guide each trip smoothly, share local history and natural highlights, and ensure that everyone feels secure while exploring. Their expertise allows passengers to focus on connection, relaxation, and creating lasting memories.

Whether it’s a family adventure, a day with friends, or simply a peaceful escape from the everyday, lake tours combine the beauty of nature with comfort and convenience. Spending time on the water offers a rare opportunity to slow down, appreciate the surroundings, and enjoy the company of those you care about—all while discovering the hidden treasures that lie along the shoreline.

Redefining Retirement Through Connection and Choice

Retirement today looks different than it did a generation ago. More older adults are seeking a lifestyle that blends independence with meaningful social connection, a place where they can feel at home while continuing to learn, engage, and enjoy life. Across the Okanagan Regency Retirement Resorts has built its philosophy around exactly that: creating vibrant, resident-centered communities where people can thrive.

What sets Regency communities apart is not one single feature, but a shared culture rooted in warmth, belonging, and respect. Walk into any Regency residence, whether in Kelowna, Vernon, or Penticton, and you’ll notice the same welcoming atmosphere. Residents greet one another by name, staff members take the time to connect, and shared spaces are thoughtfully designed to encourage conversation, activity, and comfort.

At the heart of the Regency approach is the belief that independence and support can coexist. Residents enjoy the freedom to live life on their own terms, with the reassurance that help is available if they need it. For some, that means enjoying fully independent living with access to dining, recreation, and housekeeping. For others, it may mean choosing optional support services that make day-to-day life easier. The emphasis is always on choice.

Active Living teams across Regency play an important role in creating day-to-day vibrancy. Fitness classes, educational workshops, outings, social gatherings, and creative programs are all designed to meet a wide range of interests and abilities. Staff members often describe the best part of their work as witnessing the natural friendships that form among residents and the supportive atmosphere.

Suites and amenities vary by location, but comfort and community remain at the core. Residents might spend an afternoon relaxing in a fireside lounge, joining a book club, tending a community garden, or enjoying a chef-prepared meal with friends. Spaces such as hobby rooms, outdoor patios, libraries, games lounges, woodshops, and quiet reading areas provide opportunities to engage or unwind, at any pace.

Above all, what residents and families appreciate most is the genuine sense of home. That feeling often begins the moment someone walks through the door. Team members aim to make everyone feel welcome and supported, ensuring each individual experiences the warmth and consistency.

Whether someone is seeking a more social lifestyle, hoping to simplify daily responsibilities, or simply looking for a community that aligns with their values, Regency Retirement Resort offers options to suit a variety of preferences and needs. Across every location, the promise remains the same: a warm, engaging environment where residents can continue to live fully, confidently, and with joy.
